All ore reserve estimates are based on some system for assigning an area of influence to each drill hole. Commonly used methods of calculation are the polygonal, triangular, statistical analysis, and cross-sectional. Each of these methods is based on different volumetric considerations and the weighting of grade with tonnage varies with each method. Because the characteristics of each mineral deposit are different, a preliminary survey of these characteristics should be made for each individual deposit to determine which method or methods should be used. In this project the several methods were not only compared with one another, but also against actual production records. Basic data was derived from a mined out portion of the Silver Bell pit near Tucson, Ariz. All calculation was carried out on a digital computer, and the first step was development of computer programs which would yield the desired information. The second step was the coding of input data into punched card form. Cost and speed of computer operation were measured, and these results are given with the computer program summaries on page 38.

Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have developed several new tools for evaluating roof support performance. A miniature data acquisition system (MIDAS) was developed that can collect readings from up to 16 strain gauges at regular time intervals and store the readings for later retrieval. Three LED lights change from green to yellow, then red, based on the reading levels and/or rates of change of rock movement. This feature can be used to warn miners of rock instabilities. The system can be used with any strain-gauged support (resin bolt, friction bolt, cable bolt) or with a newly developed rock strain strip (ROSS) developed by NIOSH to measure rock strain. A ROSS is grouted in a hole drilled adjacent to the rock support to be evaluated; the deformed shape of the ROSS provides anchorage on either side of the strain gauges. Data from both laboratory tests and field evaluations are presented that describe the capabilities of both the MIDAS and ROSS instruments.

Coal washability data can be used for assessing coal quality. However, the techniques of using these data to solve quality problems differ from one mine to another and certain problems may never really be investigated due to limitations of the available techniques. One promising way to overcome these limitations is by correct application of geostatistics.A geostatistical study on coal washability data was undertaken based on a data set of closely spaced in-pit bore cores. These bore cores were analysed consistently over a relatively simple geological area. The average distance between the drill holes was about lOOm. There were 78 drill holes available for the area after deleting the erroneous bore cores. During the study, nine extra closely spaced drill holes were drilled within a single mining block.A procedure to construct two coal quality models, a kriging or cokriging model and a simulation model, was proposed. The modelling results for the data above are discussed and results of a mine scheduling exercise based on the models developed are included.

A motion transducer based on coherent mixing of laser light backscattered from rough surfaces is evaluated in terms of sensitivity, bandwidth and range. Tests made with a prototype composed of a 4-mw HeNe laser, a silicon avalanche photodiode, and a 15-cm aperture telescope demonstrate that remote measurements with reasonable bandwidth and accuracy are feasible at distances up to 100 meters.

Fractures of sedimentary rocks in the vicinity of the outcrop are commonly encountered around the world. Mine highwalls and numerous highway cuts give excellent views for detailed study of surface fractures. This paper gives an explanation of the origin of fractures as well as characterization of the distribution and extent of joint system with reference to lithologic composition of the rocks. Practical implications of the joint system affecting mine operations are described. Among the subjects discussed are: discontinuous deformation as an effect of surface subsidence, stability of mine portals and near outcrop underground operations, and stability of highwalls, when using highwall miners and strip operations. Some design procedures are recommended that can minimize the problems encountered in mining areas with intense joint systems.

The Proterozoic iron oxide related Au-Cu-Bi (Tenant Creek style') deposits at Tennant Creek can be classified as syntectonic polymetallic hydrothermal replacement type mineralisation. These deposits have characteristics in common with a number of other Proterozoic iron oxide (Cu-U-Au-REE) hosted deposits in regions which include Southeast Missouri, USA; the Kiruna district, Sweden; the Great Bear Magmatic Zone, Canada; the Stuart Shelf, South Australia; and the Wemecke Mountains, Canada. Minerals and Metals Group (MMG) Century mine (Century) is a large open-cut mine in northwest Queensland approximately 2.5 km long, 1.5 km wide and 240 m deep, with an ultimate pit depth of 320 m. In 2009, the mine experienced three failures which began as small failures, and progressively developed into significant multi-batter failures. The incidents were managed by a combination of analysis, redesign and practical management to achieve positive outcomes for the mine. On the south wall of the mine, a series of batter-scale wedge failures occurred in December 2007. Analysis of structure orientations and design changes aimed to minimise the risk of failure extending over multiple batters, while accepting a risk of further small-scale failures. Design changes were constrained by a culturally sensitive area (CSA) located south of the wall. As mining progressed, shallow wedge failures developed over multiple batters and cracks were observed 60m back from the pit crest, indicating that a large-scale wedge failure was developing. Movement increased in January 2009 as a result of significant rainfall. After considering several design options, the area was stabilised by a cut-back of the wall. Two multi-batter failures also occurred on the north wall as mining progressed through a structurally complex area. Both north wall failures began as small failures that progressively developed, and required a redesign of the wall below as well as practical management of safety aspects. The complex structural geology was difficult to predict ahead of mining, and required geotechnical input into design changes as mining progressed. All three failures potentially had significant impact for ore recovery, and were managed by a combination of analysis, redesign and operational management have resulted to achieve positive outcomes in a challenging mining environment.

Prior to 1916, thickening was an art, and any accurate decision as to what size of machine to install to handle a given tonnage of a specific ore must have been one of those intuitive conclusions, based on both intimate and extensive acquaintance with thickners and ore pulps. Then in 1916 "knowledge of acquaintance," became "knowledge about" with the publication of the Coe and Clevenger paper.' The unit operation of thickening had graduated to the status of an engineering science. The fundamental similitude relationships for the two major phases of the operation were defined so clearly that batch tests on models as small as liter cylinders could serve to specify protypes as large as 325 ft in diameter.

"Risks from political instability and government policies restricting equity ownership, local operations and transfers of payments affect the profitability of foreign mining ventures. More than seat-of-the-pants judgments and old-boy networks are required to anticipate these risks and to take actions appropriate to offsetting them. A system for making political forecasts, called the Prince System, and a series of charts relaying risk s to a production of key minerals will be presented.IntroductionFirm s with extractive operations outside their home country do not have to be told that political stability and government decisions play a big role in the success o f their operations. The takeover of copper firm s in Chile during the Allende administration in 1971 and the recent decision by Venezuela to reduce Reynolds Metals equity share in a smelting operation from 50% to 28% are two examples of hundreds of events that have determined the profitability of extractive operations over the past decade. Both risks and opportunities for international firms seeking to produce and market raw materials are heavily affected by political conditions. While news of political events travel much faster than in the past and host governments are more clever in shaping the risks as well as the opportunities, politics has always been part of the mining business.What has changed is the need to be more systematic in approaching the assessment of political conditions and how it affects business. The increasing costs of extractive operations, the need for long-range planning, the importance of financial arrangements and the world-wide scope of man y firm s' activities require that the assessment be updated continuously and be comparable across different countries and different types of investments. Political risk analysis, the assessment o f macro-political changes and specific governmental decision s on the operations of extractive industries needs to become as systematic and integrated into corporate decision -making as economic analysis has become over the past two decade s."

"Tunneling and Underground works are unequivocally subject to a diversity of inherent uncertainties associated with the geotechnical, hydro-geological and environmental regime that surrounds them. On many occasions, these uncertainties can provoke loss events of considerable consequences. The present contribution elaborates on losses that the insurance market has suffered in the recent years, following a construction failure event. These losses are being considered and analysed on a quantitative basis through evaluation of cost related data, with explicit discretization of the applied construction methodology and of the subsequent developed failure type since both of which are considered of major importance. Given the identified persistence and regularity of some loss-contributing factors, recommendations are provided on the basis of a proactive risk engineering management approach that are envisaged to reinforce the understanding of project risks and alleviate the incurred insurance cost. 1 INTRODUCTION The underground construction sector has always been a very challenging area for all involved parties, including the insurance market. Main reason for that remains the uniqueness of the uncertainties sources and the subsequent inherent risks that the tunneling and underground projects are exposed to. In many instances, these risks materialize, leading to loss events with substantially high impact on reinstatement cost and incurred delays, which depending among others on the insurance coverage will have to be bared by the Insurance market. In the recent decades and as the tunneling industry boomed and expanded with many major and significant projects undertaken around the world, the insurance market was faced with additional challenges. Increased competition during tender coupled with the scale and complexity of the projects and politically driven decision making exerted pressure on the project timelines, completion dates and budget. The pressure for on-time or even early project completion- to avoid liquidated damages or achieve bonus payments, respectively- along with cost reduction efforts and the incentive for innovative failure events. That, in turn, put additional pressure on the Insurance market which had experienced a significant amount of losses with substantial cost. One of the triggered mitigation actions was the introduction of the Code of Practice for Risk Management of Tunnel Works (ITIG, 2006 & 2012; MunichRe 2006, Wannick, 2007, Spencer, 2008, Adeyemo, 2011)."

INTRODUCTION From its beginnings in the first decade of this century, flotation has gradually moved to a predominant role in mineral separation. There are several reasons for this, the continuing trend toward treat¬ment of lower-grade and more finely disseminated ores being the major one. Not only has this been true for sulfide ores to which the process was first applied commercially, but also for most nonsulfide ores as well. A second factor has been the broad applicability of the process with respect to particle size; it is effective from 8 to 10 mesh to below 10m. Finally, more so than for any other separation process, flotation has almost no limitations in separating minerals. Gravity, magnetic, or electrostatic processes are either applicable to particular minerals, or to a restricted number of mineral combinations. Flotation, on the other hand, can utilize the wide range of surface chemical differences among minerals, and an equally wide range of reagents. The recent availability of selective flocculation capabilities on a commercial scale as an adjunct to flotation should remove one of the limitations to the process in the very fine particle range. History Although flotation was anticipated in a 19th century patent to Haynes, its first significant industrial uses were in the early 20th century in Australia. According to Hoover,' the Pottter-Del-prat pro¬cess had a "measure of success" at Broken Hill's Block 14 mine in 1905-1906, and was definitely successful at the BHP Mine, where it produced 80,000 tpy of zinc concentrates. Both the Mineral Separa¬tion and the Elmore processes had early trials in Australia also, with both successes and failures. The first application in the United States was in 1911, when the Hyde process was used by the Butte and Superior Copper Co. on a zinc ore in Montana. By 1916 Hoover could list 46 applications to copper, lead, and zinc ores, mainly in the United States. Ten years later Taggart2 listed almost a thousand patents covering processes and reagents which with few exceptions laid the foundations for modern practice. Included were: sulfidizing of oxides; leach-precip¬itation-flotation; cyanides, sulfites, sulfides, and oxidants for selective depression of sulfides; starch, tannin, and glue as depressants; and xanthates, dithiophosphates, and oleic acid as collectors. Within an¬other 20 years, all of these were in commercial use along with amines for floating silica from phosphates, and synthetic frothers were com¬peting with pine oil and cresylic acid. Major sources and reserves of Cb/Nb, Ta, REE, Y, Sc, Zr, Hf, Cu, apatite and vermiculite may be concentrated in primary and secondary minerals associated with different stages and depths of emplacement in carbonatite complexes and kindred alkalic intrusive rocks. Exploration targets include: apatite and pyrochlore (Nb) in the plutonic and hypabyssal core and ring-dikes: bastnaesite (REE), strontianite, barite and fluorite in hydrothermal veins and cone-sheets (subvolcanic setting): thortveitite (Sc,Y) and vermiculite in metasomatized aureoles (fenites): high grade eluvial deposits of apatite and pyrochlore, and secondary REE, Nb, Ti. and V-minerals in supergene and weathered zones.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a laboratory-scale investigation of a technique that produces zinc sulfate and elemental sulfur from sphalerite concentrates by reaction with sulfuric acid at 175° to 200° C and ambient pressure. The objective of the investigation was to develop a hydrometallurgical method of producing zinc from sulfide concentrates that does not generate sulfur dioxide pollutants. Reaction with 80-to 85-pct sulfuric acid produced 4 moles of sulfur for every 3 moles of sphalerite reacted, with minimal production of sulfur gases under optimum conditions. More than 98 pct of the zinc was recovered as zinc sulfate after 3 hours at 175° C. The reaction mixture was leached with simulated spent zinc electrolyte containing 13-pct sulfuric acid to recover zinc sulfate from the insoluble, high-sulfur residue. Neutral zinc sulfate, which is required for electrolysis, was separated from the sulfuric acid solution by crystallization as ZnS04?7H20 at -10° C. Up to 80 pct of the water in the recycled electrolysis solution was removed by the crystallization process; evaporation was used to further concentrate the sulfuric acid for reuse in leaching sphalerite. Advantages of the proposed method over conven-tional roasting and leaching include virtual elimination of sulfur dioxide, production of a solid sulfur byproduct, and higher zinc recoveries due to elimination of zinc ferrite losses.

A stepwise implementation of seven criteria for screening the physical, chemical and environmental suitability of submarine tailing disposal (STD) at coastal mines is presented. It is expected that similar criteria would be relevant to future deepwater mining. A reconnaissance level study of four preliminary criteria: mine location; coastal bathymetry; feasible outfall locations; and potential for chemical contamination can support or eliminate the prospects for STD. If supportive, detailed, and far more time-consuming hence costly surveys of: environmental background information including oceanography and waste discharge characteristics; projected impacts on other resource uses plus regulatory and community concerns will be essential for environmental protection and to secure the necessary approvals. This review of STD systems on which the proposed screening criteria were based was undertaken by a Cooperative Agreement of the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Alaska Field Operations Center with the University of British Columbia.

"Materials selection for Gen IV supercritical water reactor in-core components faces major challenges due to severe operating condition. Beside high-temperature mechanical properties, SCC and general corrosion resistance of commercially available materials are also major focuses in recent research. Recent reports suggest that certain types of surface modifications are beneficial to SCW corrosion resistance. In this study, the effects of surface modifications are investigated, and possible mechanisms for improved corrosion performance are discussed.IntroductionThe current Canadian pressure-tube supercritical water reactor (SCW) design specifies a core outlet temperature of 625°C under 25 MPa of pressure, with peak cladding temperature as high as 850°C. Challenges in materials selection include high-temperature mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, SCC resistance and radiation damage. Most of the SCW corrosion test results available are below 730°C. Early work by Allen [1] summarized the corrosion resistance of alloy groups including Ni-based super alloys, stainless and ferritic/matensitic (F/M) steels that can potentially be used for SCW reactors. F/M steels can only be used at low temperature sites (e.g. down stream piping). At 500°C and 25 MPa, F/M steels develop a thick but mechanically stable oxide layer. However, the long term stability of the surface oxide layer is largely unknown. Ni-based alloys appear to form very thin surface oxide, however pitting was observed in the vicinity of some intermetallic precipitates [2-5], and dissolution of major alloying components could pose significant problems for down stream piping [6]. In addition, concerns of Helium formation due to Ni transmutation prevented this alloy group to be used as fuel cladding. The corrosion resistant austenitic stainless steels (e.g. 316L) are found to be susceptible to localized corrosion such as pitting, intergranular attack and stress corrosion cracking (SCC) [7]."

Advanced communication and monitoring systems were developed and demonstrated in three underground mines representing different mining techniques, geographical areas, and material mined. The first mine was a large coal mine in western Pennsylvania that used room and pillar techniques and continuous mining methods. The system developed for this mine provided private telephone channels, environmental monitoring, and control of underground equipment, all on a single coaxial cable, with all system operations under the direction of a minicomputer. Many advanced features were incorporated into the system, such as paging of roving personnel, two-way section wireless, through-the-earth emergency communication, and redundant signal paths. Television was multiplexed into the system for underground equipment surveillance. A hoist radio system completed the complement of equipment at the mine. The second mine was a magnetite ore mine in eastern Pennsylvania that used block caving mining techniques. A radio system was developed that provided two-way communications between trackless vehicles and roving personnel. A unique system of uhf/vhf repeaters combined with a flleaky-feeder" transmission line offered operational and emergency features not previously found in mine communication systems. Evacuation alarming, personnel paging, fan-hole drill operator communications, and maintenance and safety vehicle dispatch were provided. The system required no dispatcher and operated during power failure. A hoist communications/shaft inspection system completed the installation. The third mine was a deep silver mine in the Cour d’Alene district of Idaho. The system developed for this mine utilizes a single wire pair to provide up to 14 voice channels. A unique combination of PBX, telephone carrier system, and intercoms offered private conversations, selective signaling, and emergency backup communications. Two hoist communication systems were installed to provide a voice link and in-cage belling signal between hoistman and cage.

The cables brought the news last spring that the Institute had lost by death one of its most distinguished foreign members, Hjalmar Sjogren of Stockholm. For thirty-one years, Professor Sjogren had been one of our number. He was elected in 1891, joining the Institute at the time he was in the United States, in attendance at the Fifth International Geological Congress, which was held in Washington in the late summer of that year. Professor Sjogren was once more in America in 1906 and again in 1913, and on both of those visits his friends in New York had the welcome opportunity of extending courtesies to him. He was thus well known to a wide circle in our membership. His keen interest in the geology of iron ores brought him in touch with the many Americans who have studied them and who have been active in the important productive districts which he visited. Our Transactions contain (Vol. XXXVIII) one very important paper of seventy pages on the Geological Relations of the Scandinavian Iron Ores, which he contributed. Sten Anders Hjalmar Sjogren, to give his full baptismal name, was born June 13, 1856, and was the son of Anton Sjogren, a mining engineer, at the time in charge of the iron mines at Persberg, in the east and west iron-ore belt of central Sweden, about 160 miles west from Stockholm. The Persberg orebodies yielded magnetite and specular hematite from schists, with which limestones. were interstratified as well as the peculiar Swedish rocks called "halleflinte." The mines were also well known to collectors and students of minerals. While Hjalmar Sjogren was yet a lad, his father was advanced to the superintendency of a number of famous mining localities in this same district of Wermland. Paisberg, famous for its native lead, was one; and two others, Langban and Nordmarken, were among the most prolific sources of interesting minerals in all Sweden. In several localities, the pre-Cambrian limestones had obviously experienced the recrystallizing influences of intrusive igneous rocks and had been charged with the so-called "contact" minerals, which have found their way to the museums of the world. Anton Sjogren, the father, was a keen mineralogist and Hjalmar, the son, grew up in a favorable environment for receiving training and enthusiasms of the same sort. One is not surprised, therefore, to find Hjalmar Sjogren, in the long run, turning to mineralogy and geology as his final career.
