One of the limitations of the 3-dimensional Lerchs-Grossmann pit optimisation algorithm has been the difficulty in calculating an optimum pit with variable wall slopes. The difficulties have been related to establishing various wall slopes without changing the sizes of the blocks used in the normal computation, but still retaining an optimum solution.

During the past decades, slurry electrolysis (SE) has been implemented commercially for the processing of bismuthinite and complex Pb-Cu bearing gold concentrates. Recently, SE was proven effective for the treatment of As-rich antimonic gold concentrates. Laboratory test results suggest over 98% of the antimony was extracted, while the extraction of arsenic and gold was less than 0.5%, and that of iron was less than 6%. Moreover, the cathode antimony contained over 98% antimony and less than 0.3% arsenic. Considering the disadvantages of traditional 3 kA slurry electrolysis baths, such as smaller electrode area, reduced capacity, and greater electrode deterioration, the authors have developed an innovative 12 kA slurry electrolysis bath equipped with mesh and fence type titanium alloy electrodes. Furthermore, the technique was successfully used within a pilot scale plant yielding results similar to those observed in the laboratory. The technique yielded ametallic antimony ingot of 99.9% purity after arsenic removal via the addition of Na2CO3.

The Boddington Gold Mine orebody is a large tonnage, low grade gold deposit located within the Archaean Saddleback greenstone belt within the south-western region of Western Australia. The orebody consists of laterite caprock (30 per cent) and clays (70 per cent) produced by lateritisation of felsic volcanics and intrusives. The caprock comprises gravel, hardcap and B-zone which have a specific gravity of 1.8, 2.4 and 1.8 respectively. The clay has a specific gravity of 1.5.

A number of successful proof-of-concept projects have been carried out to replace conventional power application, such as diesel and rechargeable batteries, in underground mine vehicles. This has led to the development of the world?s first fuelcell production vehicle, a mine locomotive. A mine loader project has also started and several other projects are planned. These projects are providing the mining industry with the required information to make this technology shift possible. The application of fuelcell power will yield several important benefits such as the elimination of underground diesel emissions, significant reduction in the primary extraction?s sector greenhouse gas emissions and support for a more productive scenario. This article reviews these successes, discusses ongoing and potential projects and presents the technology application benefits that could be possible for mining operations.

This paper discusses how the information on ash composition, ash-fusion temperatures, and ash-slag viscosity can be used to predict slagging and fouling potentials of a particular coal. A review of several empirical parameters that are commonly used for determining such potentials is given. Also, some guideline values for interpreting the relative propensity of slagging and fouling of various types of coal are provided.

The thermal plasma process has been applied to the preparation of nanosized tungsten carbide (WC1-x). The reduction and carburization of the vaporized chloride by methane-hydrogen mixtures produced nanosized WC1-x powder, with a small amount of WC or W2C phase. The products were characterized using XRD, carbon analyzer, and TEM. The effects of plasma torch power, the flow rate of primary plasma gas (Ar) to generate plasma flame, and the addition of secondary plasma gas (H2) on the product composition were investigated. The tungsten carbide (WC1-x) powder had a particle size less than 30 nm. The powder was treated under hydrogen atmosphere to fully carburize the WC1-x, and W2C phases to WC as well as remove excess carbon in the product. Finally, WC powder with a grain size less than 40 nm was obtained.

Relatively few metal-metal systems exist that would permit the creation of fiber-metal composites consisting of mutually insoluble constituents. It is anticipated that most high strength-to-weight ratio and high -temperature fiber composites ultimately to be produced will utilize high-strength fibers embedded in a highly alloyed matrix. An investigation was conducted to determine the effect of alloying on the tensile Properties and micro-structure of tungsten-fibey-reinforced composites. Composites were made of tungsten fibers infiltrated with copper binary alloys that contain elements of varying solubility in tungsten. Room-temperature tensile tests were made on the composites, and a metallographic study of the microstructure of the fiber-metal-matrix interfaces was conducted. It was shown that, as the depth of penetration of some alloying elements into the fiber increased, a decrease in both tensile strength and ductility of the composite results. A notch effect, due to the formation of a brittle alloy zone with the tungsten fiber, was observed and gave rise to greater reductions in tensile properties and ductility behavior than would be Predicted by a law-of-mixture relation alone. In recent years, investigators have considered combining fibrous materials with relatively weak binder materials. The interest in fiber-reinforced composites results from the fact that fibers or wires may be exceedingly strong and exhibit mechanical properties superior to those of the bulk materials from which they are derived. For example, tungsten wires drawn to less than 1 mil in diameter may have strengths of over 600,000 psi,' while steel wires ranging from 10 to 3 mils in diameter may have strengths of the order of 300,000 to over 600,000 psi.2 Both metallic and ceramic whiskers are known to have very high strengths. For example, iron whiskers have been shown to have strengths of 1.9 million psi3 and sapphire whiskers have been reported to have strengths of the order of 1.7 million psi.4 If all or part of the strengths of such fibers could be retained, subsequent to the incorporation of the fibers in an engineering material, a superior material could result. In previous work done at the Lewis Research Center, McDanels, Jech, and weeton5 demonstrated the feasibility of fabricating metal-fiber—metal-matrix composites that utilized the full strengths of the fiber and matrix materials. Tungsten fibers were combined with a copper matrix by a liquid-infiltration method such that the tungsten fibers were uniaxially oriented parallel to the tensile axis of the composite. A linear relation was established that related the tensile strength of the composite with the volume percent of the fibers. Mutually insoluble constituents were selected for the study so that the strength of the composite could be quantitatively related to the strength of the individual constituents. The fact that there are only a few metals that are mutually insoluble with tungsten, e.g., copper, silver, gold, and zinc, and that these either have low melting points, high vapor pressures, or poor oxidation resistance, makes it necessary to utilize other metals that are soluble in tungsten, where high-temperature applications are ultimately contemplated. It was anticipated that, for most practical fiber-reinforced composite materials, it would be necessary to use a fiber and metallic matrix that would have varying degrees of solubility for each other. A logical extension of the earlier work was thus felt to be a study that would determine the effects of elements that had mutual solubility with the tungsten. Numerous investigators have found that tungsten fibers may be damaged by thermal treatments or contamination of the surface of the fiber by alloying elements.6-10 On the other hand, surface treatments may improve the strength of such fibers."-" Relatively little work with composites containing tungsten fibers have been reported. The work of parikh14 has shown that kinked, short-length tungsten, steel, and molybdenum fibers could str'engthen such matrices as silver, gold, and copper. A deep mining operation in the Lower Kelly (Imboden) seam in Wise County, Virginia experienced severe ground control conditions in its attempt to develop reserves situated under increasingly higher cover conditions. Ultimately one of only three mines capable of providing access to a large reserve area had to be abandoned. A thorough geotechnical exploration program was carried out to allow characterization of the critical roof and floor rock strata in accordance with the modified geomechanics classification system. The principal roof and floor rock stratigraphic sequence types were defined and mapped throughout the reserve area along with other critical geological factors. A ground control study based on the geotechnical findings provided a quantitative analysis of the causes of previous entry instability. Further analysis of pillar and entry stability identified configurations which would remain stable for the variety of strata types and range of overburden depths within the remainder of the reserve. Mine designs based on the geotechnical evaluation have, to-date, provided the stability required for long-term future development - of the reserve area. However, some areas of difficult ground were encountered which could not be anticipated with the drill data available at the time of the original study.

Surface subsidence induced by underground coal mining activities, especially longwall mining operations, can cause various problems to interstate highways ranging from structural integrity to drivability to safety. Accurate subsidence prediction, correct influence assessments and effective mitigation measures are the keys to ensuring the safety of highway traffic. The surface subsidence prediction program, called comprehensive and integrated subsidence prediction model (CISPM), was developed based on the principle of influence function method and has been validated with a large number of subsidence measurements. In this paper, the techniques to use the predicted final surface movements and deformations for assessing their influence on the integrity and functionality of highway structures — such as road surface pavements, concrete slabs and transverse joints — vehicle dynamics, comfort level and drivability are presented. A number of mitigation measures to protect the highway structures and to ensure traffic safety are proposed, along with an application case.

The effectiveness of pre-reinforcement as an immediate stabilization measure as well as its contribution to the permanent stabilization of a tunnel were studied through the use of physical (Figure 1) and numerical models (1). Physical models were designed for the investigation of two pre-reinforcement systems: first, reinforcing far ahead of the main excavation (Figure 2); second, spiling reinforcement ahead of the face (Figure 3). In both cases, the use of reinforcement was responsible for permanently stabilizing an otherwise unstable opening. Data from the physical models were used to calibrate a numerical model from which additional information on long term behavior, methods to account for the capacity of a pre-reinforcement system, and the mechanisms involved were ascertained. These studies indicated that pre-reinforcement can stabilize a rock mass effectively as it reduces deformations and thereby deterioration due to strain softening, provides rock mass confinement leading to increased available strength, and maintains rock arch continuity allowing for increased tangential stress in the immediate vicinity of the opening. Field studies verified the capacity of spiling reinforcement to restrain initial deformations.

The Bureau conducted, through joint funding with the Colorado Mining Association, large scale oil shale rubble fire tests to investigate flotability characteristics and different methods of extinguishment. Ignition of large rubble piles was easily accomplished. Foam blankets could be used to control surface flames. The results of these large scale tests confirmed that water was effective in extinguishing deep seated oil shale fires but not particularly efficient. It took up to 1.7 times as much water to extinguish a fire as anticipated on the basis of a simple cooling model, assuming 100 pet utilization.
