The Bureau of Milts studied repetitive batch electrowinning of molybdenum from molybdic oxide ) to determine the effects upon the electrolyte life, purity of metal product , and overall cell performance. The electrolyte consisted of 54.0 weight-percent sodium tetraborate (Na2B407), 23.6 weight-percent sodium chloride (NaC1), 14.9 weight-percent sodium fluoride (NaF), and 7.5 weight-percent Mo03. The feed materials were pure and technical-grade Mo03. Electrolysis was conducted at l,000° C in a graphite cell in an atmosphere of air and carbon oxides. Electrolyte degradation did not occur during repetitive winning of molybdenum from pure Mo03 in an 8-day (5,400-ampere-hour) period of operation. Electrowon metal contained <0.1 percent total impurities. The electrode configuration is a key factor in the direct conversion of technical-grade Mo03 to metal by repetitive cyclic electrolysis. The best configuration found was a cathodic crucible and a central anode. Metal purity of 99.8 percent and a current efficiency of 91 percent were maintained until the combined impurity buildup the electrolyte reached 4.7 percent silicon, l.0 percent aluminum, and 0.6 percent iron. One pound of molybdenum was produced per 1.5 pounds of solvent salts employed. About 25 percent of the initial NaCl and NaF contents of the electrolyte were lost owing to volatilization and crucible penetration.

Cyanide leaching operations have taken a beating from the press and the public at large for its seemingly haphazard approach to control of cyanide solutions and containment of tailings. Major spills in Colorado, Guyana, Spain, and more recently, Romania, have highlighted what had already been perceived to be a bad scene. Citizen initiatives and legislative actions are increasing. Whether these indictments are justified or not will not be debated in this paper. What this paper presents is that the technology to avoid these disasters and future ones has been around for more than ten years but has been ignored by the industry, despite demonstrated&apos; cost effectiveness. It is time for miners to wakeup, and use emerging, instead of old, technologies.

The essential features of an image analysis system for the measurement of mineral liberation are described. Good procedures for image acquisition and image processing prior to image analysis are defined. The basic stereological methods for the measurement of volume fraction, surface area per unit volume, particle size distribution and liberation spectra are given. The appropriate methods for fractal correction when measuring perimeters of irregular features and for frame correction when measuring linear intercepts are developed. Practically useful and accurate procedures for the stereological correction of particle size and liberation distribution methods are given.

In an effort to advance the science underlying modern coal pillar stability analysis, researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health are currently involved in research aimed at better understanding the impact of an in-seam rock parting on the strength of coal pillars. The purpose of this study is to determine a suitable virtual mining height that could be applied using current pillar stability analysis tools. To accomplish this, the boundary element model LaModel was used to back analyze data collected on pillar performance in a room-and-pillar panel at the Maple Eagle Mine located in Southern West Virginia. In a previous work, data collected from borehole pressure cells (BPCs) and extensometers were taken from three instrumentation sites. Data collected from the back bleeders were used to measure the rear abutment stresses, and data collected from two instrumentation sites in the wraparound bleeder were used to measure the front and side abutment stresses as well as the peak strength and performance of the slabbed leave pillar. The utilization of two nearly identical instrumentation sites in the wrap-around bleeder provided much needed repeatability of the obtained measurements. In this study, the data collected from BPCs at the three instrumentation sites was calibrated to match the Bieniawski pillar stress gradient. To model the measured pillar behavior, the LaModel program was selected due to its capability of being directly comparable to the Analysis of Retreat Mining Pillar Stability (ARMPS) and Analysis of Coal Pillar Stability (ACPS) programs. The model was then calibrated to match the measured abutment extent and abutment stress. Finally, the model was validated by reducing the modeled mining height until the yielding of the slabbed leave pillars in the model matched what was measured in the field. The final calibrated mining heights show that a reduction of the shale parting thickness, not including any clay layers, of 52% is applicable. This research study provides the first known measurement of the ARMPS/ACPS “50% Rule” and its applicability to this panel of the Maple Eagle Mine. This finding provides a proof of concept and could have significant implications for future research.

This paper examines the broader implications of recent and ongoing changes in mineral resource managementå and reporting practices and the impact that these might have on mining companies. It is likely that an International Reporting Code will be developed in the near future, based on a number of National codes produced in recent years. However, this is only part of the reporting story, as an International Code brings with it a range of further issues to resolve. For the Code to be effective, there needs to be international recognition and perhaps licensing of Competent Persons and an expanded base of sponsoring professional bodies. Also, in an increasingly global business, shareholders, regulators and other interested parties need to know and understand the general processes involved in resource and reserve estimation and reporting in order to recognise companies that maintain the highest standards. There is a current trend towards greater scrutiny of company performance in a range of areas under the banner of corporate governance, and many changes are happening that will place greater disclosure burdens on all companies in the future. Good corporate governance means management of company assets for the benefit of the stakeholders. For a mining company, there is no greater asset than its mineral resources and reserves and directors are just as responsible for effective management of their mineral resources as they are for financial good practice. The paper looks at the relevance of corporate governance principles to mineral resource management and the changes that this could bring to the way that companies deal with regulators, shareholders, financiers and others. Finally, increased scrutiny and further regulation inevitably means greater effort by the industry and higher costs. Despite this the author believes that there are substantial offsetting benefits to be gained by companies prepared to take the initiative in improving resource management practices and communicating these improvements to shareholders. In order to achieve the benefits however, the industry needs to fully engage in the changes that are taking place û setting its own standards and working with the regulators rather than sitting back and being legislated against. Mineral resource reporting provides a good model of how this process can work and there will be other opportunities in the coming years as the industry seeks to develop best practice in mineral resource management. Polish Copper Industry, located in the Lepica-Glogów region and operated since the 1970&apos;s, includes four mines and two smelters, "Legnica" and "Glogów", the latter consisting of "Glogów" I" and "Glogów II" both having different technologies. The "Legnica" and the "Glogów I" smelters using shaft furnaces, so sulfur elimination largely takes place during batchwise converting, resulting in fluctuation SO2-concentration between less than 1% up to 10% in the converter pas W the sulfuric acid plants. The ensuing difficulties of the past have now largely been overcome. Introduction of flash smelting at "Glogów II" with subsequent acid making by double SO2-conversion from the stable process gas, contributed significantly to further reduction Of SO2-emission. In 1994 a new double conversion sulfuric acid plant was installed at "Glogów l" as well as a "Solinox" desulfurisation plant at "Legnica", further reducing SO2 emission considerably, The next step towards this goal under consideration is a semi-dry desulfurization system for the "Glogów I" power station, SO2- abatement measures by KGHM and the results thereby achieved are presented.

The machining of thin wall parts, often used in the aeronautical industry still creates a number of problems, including panel deformation. Quality and productivity are often affected. This study seeks to determine the optimal conditions for cutting in order to guarantee a competitive fabrication of parts while still maintaining quality and delivery deadlines. The studied model (Spar) is a typical structural part used in the assembly of airplane wings. The main objective of this study was to improve two performance aspects: surface quality finish (quality criteria) and the rate of cutting by stock removal (economic criteria). To achieve this objective, we used an evaluation process of the geometrical error issuing from the machine-tool. We also determined the stability zones of the machine-tool&apos;s dynamic system. Finally, a series of high-speed machining tests (finishing cuts) were conducted using an experimental structured approach (16 000 - 24 000 rpm). Profile measures of surface roughness and cycle times registered during trials allowed us to establish optimal cutting conditions. Surface roughness improved as well as cutting by stock removal. Four parameters were taken into consideration: axial depth of cut, chip load, spindle speed, and cutting fluid. Finally, the influence of the type of cutting fluid was evaluated to show that it did not significantly affect machining results.

PRESIDENT PRYDE: Any discussion on Mr. Poster&apos;s paper? MR. J. BEVAN: I would like to ask the gentleman how fine the dust has to be to cause an explosion? MR. T. FOSTER: According to the Bureau of Mines, it is claimed coal passing through a 100 mesh screen would be considered fine enough. That is all I can learn from the different bulletins. MR. BEVAN: Will the coal dust be that fine; going back in the empty cars on the tipple in the mine? MR. FOSTER: Possibly a great deal of it would be. MR. BEVAN: Will the coal dust be that fine, going back, in the empty the coal dust going back in the cars on the tipple, and into the mine? MR. FOSTER: In some places, they are wetting the cars at the tipple, -in the Rock Springs District, we have as the trip goes out, they have a big pipe, and they souse the car, and wet the load, and in some places, near the timbers; that helps to a certain extent. That does not absolutely eliminate it all, but it helps considerable. MR. WM. LITTLEJOHN (Utah Fuel Company) : I think we have all listened very attentively to the paper that Mr. Foster has just read. He has brought up a subject rather close to my heart, for a long time. He mentions particularly, the Scofield disaster, which happened the first of May, 1900; two hundred men lost their lives in the explosion; and I think it is generally conceded that is about the first time it had ever been brought to the attention of coal miners or operators that such a thing was possible, namely, a purely coal dust explosion. The term "Scofield disaster" is rather a mistake, in a way; while the mine that exploded at the time is in the Scofield District all right, it is now known, and probably was known at that time, as the Winter Quarters Mine, one of the mines which belongs to the Utah Fuel Company at the present time, and did at that time. Foundation designs utilizing helical pile groups are increasingly widespread in the electric power utility industry.&nbsp; Yet the application of these systems lacks uniformity and knowledge gaps may exist. Recently, a body of codes and practice documents have been prepared by DFI and ASCE subcommittees regarding standard practice for electric power transmission structures design.&nbsp; These codes and standards are discussed as they apply to helical pile groups.&nbsp; With a better understanding of how the codes apply to these foundation types, engineers and designers can more confidently and adeptly specify and bid from a broader range of deep foundation options. Design of electric power transmission structures is most challenging at angles, water crossings, and dead ends.&nbsp; These structures often are characterized by large overturning moments. This presentation will cover simple hand calculations for estimating the distribution of pile reactions from ground line tower moments.&nbsp; Then, pile groups modeling using Ensoft&reg; Group will also be covered in depth and with specific design examples from real case histories. &nbsp;Design considerations for sizing of individual piles and key differences between pile design for building structures and pile design for power transmission towers and applicable codes and standards will be discussed. &nbsp;Preliminary findings from field measurements performed on existing helical pile group supported structures, if available, may be included as they relate to validation of models.

Crucible-smelting tests at the Northwest. Electrodevelopment Laboratory and a pilot-plant test on electric smelting of western phosphate rock for the Westvaco Chlorine Products by the Tennessee Valley Authority indicated that the small vanadium content of the rock is concentrated in the ferrophosphorus by-product of Phosphorus smelting. This research is concerned&apos; mainly with recovering vanadium and phosphorus froth the ferrophosphorus produced from western phosphate rock. Exploratory tests were made of several methods of treating vanadiferous ferrophosphorus. Attempts to separate vanadium as a carbide dross by saturating molten ferrophosphorus with carbon were unsuccessful. Volatilization of phosphorus from ferrophosphorus was accomplished to some extent, both with and without addition of sulfur in several forms, but elimination of phosphorus was not complete. Brief testing in a small experimental converter on oxidation of vanadium and phosphorus; into a slag by blowing with air showed promise. A method that comprised fusing vanadiferous ferrophosphorus mixed with soda ash under oxidizing conditions gave encouraging results and was tested beyond the preliminary stage. A slag product of the fusion contained most of the phosphorus and vanadium as water-soluble sodium phosphate and. virtually water-insoluble sodium vanadate. After leaching the sodium phosphate froth the slag, the leach residue was reroasted with soda ash and salt. This roasted product was leached again with water to extract the vanadium.

This paper presents a review of published investigation dealing with the importance of sulfur compounds in the deterioration of materials or providing some basis for estimating the extent of loss shareable to such air pollution. Materials included are cement, stone, metals, paint, leather, paper, sand cloth. The investigations may be divided into two classes, one of the laboratory type in which the sulfur content and the humidity of the air were controlled and the other dealing with the exposure of materials to atmospheres not under control. The first type of work has shown that cement is subject to deterioration by the action of sulfur dioxide gas. The experiments with stone indicate that although limestone takes up sulfur dioxide, from the air, moist sulfur dioxide-air mixtures alone cannot be used for establishing- the comparative weathering- qualities of the different types of stone by accelerated test methods. Laboratory tests indicate that sulfur compounds in the air accelerate the corrosion of iron, steel, zinc, copper, and nickel at normal air temperatures and at certain relative humidities. It has also been indicated that certain types of paint are, affected by high sulfur dioxide concentrations, and that paper is attacked by sulfur dioxide in the atmosphere. The investigations of the second type show the amount or variation of corrosion in different localities and under different types of exposure. The investigations (10) (18)4/ during which sulfur determinations were made indicate that sulfur dioxide is a main controlling factor in the corrosion of iron and steel but according to Quick (18) may not be for some nonferrous metals. In general, the laboratory tests do not Jive definite data on the loss due to sulfur compounds at the concentrations normally found in the air. The data from atmospheric exposures are not complete from the standpoint of the exact effect of the sulfur compounds. Damage to materials so exposed is affected by factors such as other chemical contaminants, humidity, rainfall, solid deposits, and sunlight. This report on the properties of aviation gasolines and aviation jet fuels produced in the United States during 1953 was made under a co-operative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. Analytical data are presented for 101 samples of aviation gasoline which include, for the second time in this series of reports, data on some samples of grade 108/135 aviation fuel. Data also are given for 32 samples of aviation jet fuel. The analyses were made on samples typical of the manufacturers&apos; production in their laboratories and the results sub-mitted to the Bureau of Mines for compilation. The products of 19 manufacturers of aviation gasolines and of 19 producers of aviation jet fuels are represented.

Many longwall operators experience difficulty complying with the federal regulation limiting average dust exposure. Others are currently in compliance, but the dust exposure limit keeps then from increasing their production. Spray water is a major means of dust control. Excess water can cause problems in the transportation system and the cleaning plant, and reduces the Btu value of the run of mine coal. Thus, the dust exposure reduction per unit of water sprayed must be maximized. This paper discusses underground tests recently completed as part of a Bureau of Mines research program to determine the effects of variations in spray water flow rate, pressure, proportioning and spray orientation on longwall shearers.

Pressure hydrometallurgical unit operations have been in commercial use at the Fort Saskatchewan refinery of Sherritt International Corporation for fifty years. This paper traces the history of Sherritt from its origins in northern Manitoba, and the development of the first hydrometallurgical nickel-cobalt refinery in 1954, utilizing pressure hydrometallurgy, to the modern day refinery. Sherritt&apos;s involvement with pressure hydrometallurgy during the past 50 years has included the operation of the refinery, the development and licensing of technology, incorporating pressure hydrometallurgical unit operations, to more than 30 companies worldwide, the joint venture at Moa, Cuba involving both leaching and precipitation at elevated temperature and pressure, and the production of specialty metal powders. Developments in each of these areas are reviewed.

Roasting of concentrates with high impurity levels is normally done in multiple- hearth furnaces where the concentrates are heated with oilfired burners in order to remove As, Sb and Bi before the final sulfide oxidation. Although it is a countercurrent heat exchange process it uses a lot of oil. In order to develop an energy saving, and from a working environmental point of view a less harmful process than the multiplehearth process, pilot-plant tests have been done in a two-stage fluidized bed for partial roasting. The test materials have been As-rich concentrates with 8-25 % As some 5b and Bi. The Cu-content was 0-28 %. The tests have been successful with <0.3 % As,in the calcine and with an elimination of 5b between 80 and 90 %. In order to achieve the proper conditions for good impurity removal, 1.e. right temperature,residence time and sulphur potential, the tests were performed in a special designed roaster. The roaster consists of two beds with the facilities for recirculation of calcine, preheating of the blast, and possibility to use oxygen enrichment. The construction makes it easy to control the reactions that generate the heat in the bed and reduce the amount of dust that passes through the cyclones. As two roasting steps are used, the possibility to obtain optimal conditions for impurity removal is improved and the calcine can either be smelted to a normal matte, or after being dead-roasted in the second stage, be leached in the normal way for gold extraction. The calcine was smelted with slag. The matte and the slag obtained had low quantities of impurities in the matte and a favourable distribution of impurities to the slag.

T e mechanization of industry to reduce labor costs and to improve product quality is affecting he scale industry as it has affected many other industries. With increased emphasis on higher production rates many operators are experiencing difficulty in overcoming production problems where weight is a factor. Unfortunately, the scale industry has not shown the development over the last twenty-five years that other instrument industries have. For centuries the balance scale has been the standard and the workhorse of most weighing operations. In recent years considerable effort has been applied to designs to make balance scales more acceptable to industries employing automatic or semi-automatic processes. For the most part the designers have not attempted to replace the basic scale but toautomate functions of material handling and human judgement. Modern dump scales, for example, will accept material from a conveyor until a preset amount of material is on the scale, At this time the scale turns off the conveyor, dumps the load of material and repeats the operation with any desired timing. These improvements have helped industry. Even the scale observer has been replaced with devices which observe the scale reading and operate on weighed objects according to their weights. In spite of&apos; the application of automation to the material handling, the balance scale has not been completely satisfactory. One reason for this is fairly evident when one considers the construction of the scales. Inherently, they are slow devices because of the inertia of the beams. The beam scale, primarily a static measuring device, is at the best limited to slow dynamic measurements.

A value for the enthalpy of formation of z2 of -3.14 i 0.21 kcal per g-atom has been measured by the technique of acid solution calorimetry. This result is in quite good agreement with two earlier determinations by tin solution calorimetry and by direct reaction caloriinetry, and averaging of values determined from the three independent calorimetric techniques gives enhanced precision and accuracy with AHh8 (CaMgZ) = - 3.15 i 0.05 kcal per g-atom. For comparison with experimental data, values for the enthalpies of formation of CaMgz, SrMgz, and BaMgz of -9.8, -7.9, and -2.8 kcal per g-atom were estimated from a calculation based on the LVigizer-Seitz approximation as modified by Raimes for polyvalent elements. While complete quantitative accord between these calculated talues and available experimental data is lacking, nonetheless numerical accord is better than might be expected and, more importantly, parallel numerical trends are observed between experimental and calculated vnlues. WITHIN the past decade the enthalpy of formation of CaMg, has been determined a) from measurement of magnesium vapor pressures over binary Ca-Mg alloys,&apos; b) by solution calorimetry with liquid tin as the solvent,&apos; c) from measurement of hydrogen vapor pressures over ternary alloys of calcium, magnesium, and hydrogen,3 and d) by direct reaction alorimetr. The value from tin solution calorimetry is the most precise and is probably the most reliable, and this value is within the quoted uncertainties of the other three experimental results. The overall agreement among the four independent investigations is quite good, particularly so when the diversity of techniques is noted. On the basis of this agreement, CaMgz was chosen as a test material to evaluate the operation of a newly constructed apparatus for the determination of enthalpies of formation of intermetallic phases by acid solution calorimetry. This was believed to be a severe test because of the high chemical reactivity of both calcium and magnesium which reactivity presumably accounts for the fact that an early determination5 of the enthalpies of formation of Ca-Mg alloys by acid solution calorimetry yielded values significantly more negative than the four recent determinations. EXPERIMENTAL APPARATUS AND MATERIALS Experimental Apparatus. The enthalpy of formation of CaMg, was determined by measuring the difference between the heat evolved when dissolving the metallic compound and the heat evolved when dissolving equivalent amounts of unreacted metallic elements in hydro- chloric acid. This was done differentially with an apparatus consisting of twin calorimeters which were constructed to be as nearly identical as possible. The advantage of differential calorimetry is that systematic errors arising from the individual calorimeter design tend to cancel. A schematic representation of the apparatus is shown in Fig. 1. A dead air space around both calorimeters was provided by a large, thermally insulated jacket. Each calorimeter consisted of a 2-liter Dewar flask which was completely enclosed in a copper container. Each Dewar contained 1600 g of 2.5hr HCl to act as the solvent, and thermal effects resulting from solvent evaporation were minimized by covering the acid with 50 g of mineral oil. There was no detectable reaction between the acid and the mineral oil. Equivalent amounts of mechanical energy were added to the calorimeters through twin stirring rods which were driven at the same rpm by a single motor with the intent of the stirring being to maintain thermal equilibrium throughout the solvent. To calibrate the heat capacities of the calorimeters, known amounts of electrical energy could be added by passing measured voltages and currents for known times through submerged heaters, approximately 20 ohms, which were wound noninductively from Manganin wire. A 6-v storage battery was used as a power source, and a dummy heater was used as an exercise circuit to allow the battery to stabilize at a constant electromotive force before energizing one or the other of the calorimetric heaters. A type K-2 potentiometer was used to measure the potential drop across an energized heater while the current was determined from the potential drop across an external standard resistor. The paper outlines the successful application of some of the on-belt technologies available from Scantech International Pty Ltd and how these have provided benefits in a number of mining and mineral processing operations. Effective process control requires real time analysis so quality can be fed back to the previous process and fed forward to a subsequent process. A range of on-belt analysers that allows for full stream, continuous, non-contact analysis of conveyed materials is available to achieve this. Real time results can provide timely information for effective process control. Benefits of on-belt analysis systems become more evident once the true variability of material quality and moisture content in conveyed flows is measured. To obtain economies of scale in mineral processing operations large material flows are achieved using conveyors. The cost and effort to sample representatively increases as conveyor flows increase. One sample may represent a few tonnes or up to 10 000 tonnes of material. The turnaround time between sampling and availability of sample analysis data does not allow real time process control. Tonnage flow rate, moisture content and elemental or mineralogical composition are required to perform effective process control of most conveyed streams. Tonnages can be effectively measured using belt weighers. The analyses derived from small samples supplied by conveyor-based sampling systems contain high variability. On-belt, continuous analysers see all the material and, through short term compositing of analyses, supply less variable results. Real time analysis helps operators develop a better understanding of material variability. Analysers can be effectively utilised to improve the consistency of product quality through bulk sorting and blending control. Many existing users of the technologies have gained competitive advantages through their ability to supply a more consistent quality product to the market.

IN JUNE 1921, the Sullivan &lining Co., owned jointly by the Bunker Hill and Sullivan Mining & Concentrating Co. and the Hecla Mining Co, started work on the development of the Star Mine. The development work contemplated called for a crosscut from the Hecla workings on the 2000 level to the Star ledge. The length of crosscut necessary to encounter the Star ledge was approximately 8900 ft. from the Hecla shaft. By using workings formerly made by the Hecla Mining Co., only about 8100 ft. of actual crosscutting was necessary. This crosscut has a direction of S 20° W and would have a tendency to crosscut any ledges in the intervening ground.
