JX Nippon Mining and Metals Corporation has developed the JX Iodine Process, which is an innovative and patented copper-leaching process for low-grade primary sulfide ores. This process consists of the irrigation of ferric iron and a low concentration of iodide solutions. One-meter column leaching tests were conducted on ore samples from two different mines. At the end of experiments, the total copper recovery exceeded 70% for Sample A and 50% for Sample B with the iodine method, which was significantly higher than that with conventional ferric leaching of 14% for Sample A and 20% for Sample B. To elucidate the reason for the JX Iodine Process effectiveness, cross sections of leached residues were studied. Reaction products were confirmed around chalcopyrite even in the central area of particles in Sample A, however, reaction products were recognized at a depth of only 1 mm from the ore rim in Sample The resistance of Sample A to the leachate appeared to be lower than that of Sample B because Sample A had a high permeability and porosity, whereas Sample B had been affected strongly by a potassium alteration. No reaction products were visible on conventional leaching samples, even at the ore surfaces. INTRODUCTION Hydrometallurgical copper leaching (heap leaching or dump leaching) has been used extensively for copper recovery from oxide and secondary-sulfide ores, but not for primary copper sulfides, which contain mainly chalcopyrite as copper minerals. Although they are major resources of copper, primary copper sulfides are difficult to process because of their refractory nature. Extensive leaching studies have been carried out to leach primary copper sulfides (chalcopyrite), including biological and chemical, using a variety of oxidants and additives to enhance copper recovery. Watling (2013) reviewed acid-chloride-oxidizing agents with chalcopyrite. Abdollahi et al. (2015) tested silver as a catalyst for bioleaching with a chalcopyrite-bearing molybdenite concentrate. Hiroyoshi, Miki, Hirajima and Tsunekawa (2000) found a specific redox-potential zone for high-speed chalcopyrite leaching by controlling the ratio of ferric and ferrous iron. However, no ambient-temperature economic process has been developed for leaching primary copper sulfide, which usually has a low copper grade.

To encourage the development and conservation of the Nation's ceramic raw materials, the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, under an agreement with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, evaluated samples from a clay resource located in Clay County, Ga., for use as a raw material for lightweight aggregate. The physical properties of clay samples, taken from 5-foot increments of drill cores from 11 holes, were determined. Raw materials were plasticized and extruded to produce 1/2-inch by 1-inch pieces and fired in a rotary kiln to produce lightweight aggregate samples. The resulting expanded material had excellent loose pour weights ranging from 30 to 37 lb/cu ft. The expanded test materials were crushed, sized, and used as aggregate to form concrete cylinders. The unit weight and compressive strength of the cylinders averaged 106 lb/cu ft and 3,350 lb/sq in, respectively; these values meet American Society for Testing and Materials specifications for structural concrete. The clay from the drill cores was also used to make test bars that were evaluated for building brick.

Influence of Sr and Mn single and combined additions on the modification of the Fe-containing intermetallic compounds and mechanical properties of Fe-rich AA319 aluminum alloys have been investigated, The microstructural features e,g, morphology of the Fe compounds and eutectic Si has been correlated to the mechanical properties, It was demonstrated that modification of the Fe compounds from the platelet ß-Al5FeSi to the Chinese script a-Al8Fe2Si compound improves the UTS and elongation of the alloys by 10.3% and 83.9%, respectively. Moreover, the simultaneous modification of the Fe compounds and eutectic Si increases the UTS and elongation of the alloys by 15,3% and 116,1%, respectively.

Observations of coal stockpiles subject to unusual levels of instability showed that the particular coals exhibited 'gap grading', a relative lack of intermediate size particles. This led to a suggestion that fine coal particles within the pile might have been induced to migrate under the influence of water flow and to concentrate in relatively impervious layers, resulting in local water saturation and reduction of shear strength. To investigate this suggestion, a large test column has been constructed and washed coals with various levels of fines content have been subjected to a downward flow of water. Subsequent examination of the bed of coal within the column confirmed the percolation of fines and their concentration into horizontal layers, and showed the development of zones of saturation above those layers. Shear box tests showed differences in cohesion and internal friction angle between coals with different percentages of fines, supporting the hypothesis that fines percolation may lead to decreased stability.

This Bureau of Mines report estimates the population of the principal types of machinery in use by the coal mining industry during 1982 in surface and underground mines. Estimates were arrived at using 1976 coal equipment population estimates as baseline data with modifications made for new mine development, expansion, and closure occurring during 1976-82. Estimates were broken down into 3 regions which included all 26 coal-producing States. Modifications made to the baseline data were computed using (1) actual equipment information when available, plus (2) equipment information hypothesized from representative generic mine models, which were predicated on mine size and mine method. Roughly half of the equipment fleet at new or expanding coal operations was known; the remainder was hypothesized. The mine models used to generate equipment information are included in this report, along with the hypothesized equipment use data. The equations and various factors used to determine the equipment adjustments for mine closings, new mine openings, and small coal mine operations are also identified.

"Interest in the use of particle-based ore sorting has increased significantly with recent advances in sorting technologies and higher capacities per unit. Particle-based ore sorting has the potential to provide great value in processing lower grade ores from mines while delivering higher grades to the mill, as well as in upgrading waste rock into ore. Typically the focus is on the amenability of the ore to ore sorting and associated reductions in energy, water, and consumables utilization. However, layout significantly affects the installed cost of a processing plant, and the impacts on layout from fitting an ore sorting circuit into the plant plan need to be carefully considered. This paper examines processing plant layout considerations that play an important role in ore sorting projects, including additional crushing and screening requirements, transport of rejected material back to the waste stockpile (mine fleet requirements), and effects on the processing plant footprint. ¦ KEYWORDS Cold climates, Ore sorting, Plant layout RÉSUMÉ L’intérêt porté à l’utilisation du tri granulométrique du minerai a considérablement augmenté au vu des récents progrès réalisés en matière de technologies de triage et des capacités supérieures par unité. Le tri granulométrique du minerai offre une plus-value intéressante en termes de traitement du minerai à plus faible teneur extrait des mines ; il permet par ailleurs l’acheminement vers le concentrateur de minerai à plus haute teneur et la revalorisation des stériles dans le minerai. On met généralement l’accent sur la susceptibilité du minerai au triage et sur les réductions connexes en termes d’utilisation de l’énergie, de l’eau et de biens consommables. Abstract This paper introduces tested results of rock-socketed pile in Nanjing, Wuhan and Chongqing. From a force- transfer model, a distribution of axial force for pile-body and inlaid resistance for rock-socketed pile was deduced. A review of copper hydrometallurgy by J. C. PAYNTER, B.Sc. (Chem. Eng.) (Visitor) Copper hydrometallurgy is discussed with special reference to the treatment of chalcopyrite concentrates under South African conditions. The following processes are described and illustrated: Sherritt Gordon's ammonia pressure leachilng, the Arbiter Process, sulphuric acid pressure leaching, roasting processes, the Cymet Process, and the ferric chloride process developed at the National Institute for Metallursy. These processes are then compared with respect to the form of sulphur produced (elemental sulphur or sulphate), the character of the iron product and the handling of different types of ore.

Coal is expected as one of the main energy sources for a long period because of vast deposits. However, two large barriers to utilize it are suggested, i.e. the carbon dioxide emissions and ash disposal. The authors chose principal methods and areas to utilize coal ash and analyzed the environmental impacts caused by the ash treatment considering the source of the ash. According to the analysis based on lifecycle thinking, an optimized ash treatment system can reduce the integrated environmental impact. It suggests that coal can carry out its role for several decades without disturbances from the point of ash treatment.

The Miwah prospect lies on the dilational 070¦ trending Miwah Lineament near its intersection with northerly oriented fractures within Pliocene volcanic rocks exposed between a NW trending segment of the dextral transcurrent Sumatra Fault, and the more northerly trending Samalanga-Sipopok Fault to the east. These faults reflect the continued interaction between stresses from the India-Australia plate located to the southwest, and spreading within the Andaman Sea to the north of Sumatra. A system of deep seated faults is believed to have facilitated emplacement of post-Miocene magmas and Quaternary volcanic centres at shallow crustal levels throughout northern Sumatra.

Destructive distillation (carbonization) was shown to be a feasible method of disposing of scrap tires. The Bureau of Mines conducted tests under a variety of conditions. Solid, liquid, and gaseous products were produced, recovered, and analyzed. The quantities of the various products were shown to be quite dependent on the test temperature. Variability in composition of the liquid and gaseous products with changes in test temperature was also significant.

The topic of the presentation will be the excavation of 25,000 IF, 11-foot 0-inch diameter, hard rock tunnel using a Robbins boring machine on the Terror Lake Hydroelectric Project on Kodiak Island, Alaska. This tunnel was completed on a tight construction schedule under some unusual conditions. The tunnel was mined through hard massive granite with faults and high water flows up to 7,000 GPM encountered at the heading in some areas. New innovations in equipment and cutter design were used.

Sulphuric acid leaching has been up to the present, the most popular of the leaching routes. Oxide ores are usually leached with sulphuric acid directly by dump leaching, as practiced at the Bagdad or Bluebird Mines in Arizona, or by vat leaching as done at Inspiration Mining in Arizona. Upgrading of the low-grade oxide ores by dump leaching followed by cementation of the copper from solution by scrap iron has been replaced by the leaching-solvent extraction-electrowinning route which results in a high purity product at the mill site at reduced production costs compared to previous practice. High-grade oxide ores, vat leached with H2SO4, can contain, for example, 25 g Cu/l and 25 g H2S04/,l, or higher concentrations of both, and are presently fed directly to electrorefining plants. Advantages of coupling solvent extraction-electrowinning with the low cost dump leaching instead of using cementation, are as follows (1): a) the production of high purity electrolytic copper rather than cement copper;

"P.T Freeport Indonesia's new SAG mill commenced operation in February 1995. The reclaim system consists of four apron feeders and a series of three conveyors. The feeders are used in various combinations and relative speeds to blend SAG mill feed. It was recognized during design of the control system that effective automatic control would require dead-time and gain compensation. The successful implementation of the Dahlin algorithm to provide variable dead-time and gain compensation is described and compared to Pl control.RésumeL'opération du nouveau SAG de P.T. Recent studies by researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health indicate that shear loading contributes significantly to failure of bolts used for rock reinforcement in coal mine roofs. Laboratory tests on 17 bolts were conducted to study the behavior of roof bolts subjected to shear loading over a range of axial bolt loads. Fourteen strain gauges were attached to each bolt to measure axial and bending loads at seven locations along its length. The instrumented bolts were grouted through two high-strength concrete blocks, and axial tension was applied to as much as 75% of yield strength. With the block interface acting as a failure plane, shear loads were applied to the blocks at a constant rate of displacement to the ultimate strength of the bolts. The tests characterized the relationship of axial bolt loads to shear forces across a rock bedding plane and measured the distribution of axial and bending strain along the length of the bolts. These results will improve the selection of roof reinforcement in mine areas where high shear stresses are present, thus improving the safety of miners working in these areas.
