Supercompressibility factors, Fpv, were derived from experimental compressibility data for five helium-nitrogen mixtures containing from 50 to 100 pct helium. These Fpv values are required as volumetric correction factors for or if ice meter measurement of "crude helium" (helium-nitrogen) purchased by the Government in a program of helium conservation. Although compressibility measurements were made by the Burnett method (2)3 - for pressures from 100 to 3,400 psia and temperatures from 40° to 100° F, Fpv values were needed only for pressures from 400 to 2,000 psia. Consequently, values at increments of 2° F, 2 pct helium, and 10 psia were tabulated only for the required pressure range. Values for pressures outside this range can be calculated from information shown in the tables. Values for the second, third, and fourth coefficients in the equation Z = 1 + BP + CP2 + DP3 are also included.

The mineralogy, maero- and micro-textures of Thackaringa ore are simple and have many counterparts among base metal-quartz-siderite vein type deposits elsewhere.The ore consists predominantly of galena, sphalerlte, chalcopyrite, tetrahedrite, and arsenopyrite in a quartz and siderite gangue. Silver minerals, as such, appear to be lacking and silver values are no higher than in other sulphide ores of this type. These features contrast very markedly with those of the A.B.H. Consols Lode which appears to have emanated from the north end of the Broken Hill Main Lode Horizon during high grade regional metamorphism. The Consols Lode has been regarded as of Thackaringa type, and both are regarded as possibly arising from the remobilization of Main Lode Horizon ore. Whilst this may yet prove to be so it appears that the marked differences in mineral composition between the Consols and the Thackaringa types, would require somewhat different modes of regeneration.Thackaringa ore, as well as A.B.H. Consols ore, on this basis, would necessitate the development of a metahydrothermal ore fluid to account for their present apparently hydrothermal (or pseudo-hydrothermal) constitution...

A comparison study was conducted between an actual physical model and a numerical model based on the physical model of the block cave mining method. Results from the numerical analyses closely simulated the blocky behavior of the physical models, including bridging and interlocking of the simulated orebody during draw. The draw-down patterns and the rate of draw developed during numerical modeling also closely simulated the physical models. An unexpected result from the numerical modeling was the development of a zone of downward deflection which preceded the development of the zone of material movement.

The work in this paper describes the theory, development and analysis of a computer model simulating a mine operation moving material using concurrent decline ramp truck haulage and skipping practices. This simulation was designed specifically to assess the performance of the truck haulage component and to expand on the scope and capabilities of traditional TKM fleet calculations. Haulage fleet simulation results were similar to TKM calculations for the lower to moderate production rate cases. However, comparisons of ramp-up and high production rate scenarios indicated that the simulation model was significantly more sensitive to operating practices and factors not accounted for by calculations derived when using a single TKM figure. Given the proper calibration of inputs and logic, the simulation model was additionally capable of providing information associated with general mine operations efficiency. Further benefits of the simulation model over a TKM approach included logistical assessments such as production schedule feasibility, productivity trade-off quantifications for proposed operating practices, and the validation of mine resource utilization scheduling. The simulation model was able to expand on traditional methods to approach planning and logistics by considering factors such as truck queuing, real-time traffic interactions, random events, and competition for resources on mine productivity.

A relatively simple model of grinding which incorporates both the Bond grindability equations and the population balance equations has been extended to form a comprehensive simulation package that can describe most kinds of conventional grinding circuits. The package has two programs, with the first consisting of an input program which helps the user to specify the prescribed circuit, while the second program performs the actual simulation. The package serves two main purposes - i) as a check on mill design, with the output providing not only predictions for the product passing size but also of the full product size distribution, and ii) as a means to assess the likely effects on the product size distribution of operating under different sets of conditions.

The Isa Mine of Mount Isa Mines Limited currently produces 5.4 million tonnes of copper ore and 3.3 million tonnes of silver, lead and zinc ore annually. Of this, 5.1 million tonnes of copper ore and 2.2 million tonnes of silver-lead-zinc ore is produced by sublevel open stoping. This paper summarises the capabilities, operating practices and problems encountered with current production drilling practices used to drill sublevel open stopes at Mount Isa.

Developing natural aggregate resources (sand, gravel and stone) creates environmental impacts. A systems analysis method was designed to characterize the components of the environmental system, identify potential impacts to those systems and evaluate the extent of those impacts. The stepwise method consists of problem definition, data collection, preliminary conceptualization and characterization, additional data collection, data analysis and refinement. The method requires analyzes of various systems making up the environment, including land surface, geomorphic, subsurface and groundwater systems. After system characterization is complete, the method focuses on identifying and evaluating potential environmental impacts to determine acceptable mining strategies.

In this study, bioleaching experiments, synchrotron X-ray Diffraction (SR-XRD), X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) were conducted to investigate the intermediates and surface species of bornite leached by mesophilic mixed bacteria of Leptospirillum ferriphilum, Acidithiobacillus caldus and Sulfobacillus thermosulfidooxidans. CuS, Cu9Fe9S16 and S8 were the main intermediate species during bornite bioleaching by mesophilic mixed bacteria, and CuFeS2 was also detected. The surface species of S2− and S2 2− would be polymerized to Sn 2− during bioleaching. The formation of element sulfur and the increase of its content were confirmed by the fitted results of XPS spectra. The presence of polysulfide and element sulfur did not inhibit the bornite bioleaching. The formations of CuS and CuFeS2 were confirmed by the results of Cu K-edge XANES spectra.

For shortwall mining to be profitable, the additional capital investment of about $1 million for shortwall roof supports must be offset by decreased total operating costs and/or increased coal production. The Bureau of Mines therefore conducted a demonstration project to compare shortwall and room-and-pillar mining. Daily two-shift production from the bureau of Mines-Beth-Elkhorn Corp. shortwall demonstration n project averaged 975 tons of raw coal, compared with 905 tons from a room-and-pillar unit operating undo r similar conditions. The estimated direct operating costs for the shortwall and room-and-pillar unite were $4.21 and $4.03 pier ton, respectively. The profitability of the shortwall system was found to depend not only on the increased depreciation cost of the powered roof supports and the decreased cost of supplies and materials but also on such factors as the fixed and variable indirect costs and the selling price of the coal. Shortwall mining was demonstrated to be a viable alternative to room-and-pillar mining.

This paper provides an overview of the advantages and limitations of continuous flight auger (CFA) and drilled displacement (DD) systems compared to other deep foundation systems, along with a summary of important considerations for selection and design. Geotechnical and project considerations are described which favor the use of CFA and DD piling, and also which may be problematic for this type of construction or which may limit the practicality and competitive advantages. A brief summary of design methods for axial and lateral loading is included.

Rockfall and unstable rock slopes can be con-trolled by using steel wire-rope net systems as barriers or as slope draping. The chief advantage of such systems over rigid type barriers is the flexibility of wire rope netting. This flexibility and strength permits kinetic energy dissipation with low maintenance requirements. Mining activities can produce temporary or long-term unnatural slopes and unstable rock faces that may produce rockfall hazards. Such conditions can necessitate efforts to minimize the hazard to workers, structures and equipment.

Beginning on June 11, 2007, as many as 36, kindergarten-to-grade-12 (K-12) teachers will participate in a program designed to educate them all about the mining industry. The 39th Annual A Total Concept of the Mining Industry – All About Mining, will be conducted by the Colorado Mining Association Education Foundation, Inc. (CMAEF) and the Office of Special Programs and Continuing Education (SPACE) at the Colorado School of Mines. This flagship program includes four intensive weeks at the Colorado School of Mines. During that time, more than 75 volunteer lecturers will “educate the educators” about mining and its importance to the United States and the world. During the learning process associated with obtaining a basic understanding of mining and all its aspects, the teachers will be hosted by hundreds of other industry professionals at 10 Colorado mining operations. Also visited will be a government earthquake center, a museum of mining and industry, an earth mechanics laboratory, a metallurgical research center, a metallurgical concentrator, an electric power plant and a steel mill. Questions before, during and after visits will be answered by another select group of volunteers who will travel with the teachers to the various sites.

"INTRODUCTIONNo. 1 Queens Rd was an existing 10-storey office building founded on large pad footings. This project involved the construction of a 6-level, 15m (50-ft.) deep basement excavated immediately adjacent to the existing building and also beneath the existing footprint of the Southern end of the building. The total perimeter of the new basement was to be approximately 200m (656 ft.) all with a retained height of 15m (50 ft.). It was also proposed to add a further 5 storeys to the building. Approximately 18 of the existing columns supporting the 10-storey building were to have the applied column load diverted from the existing foundations at ground level onto the new piles or basement raft 15m (50 ft.) below.The geotechnical profile consisted of fill for the top 1.5m predominately comprising of clayey sand with a high gravel content from 1.5m to 9m (5 to 30 ft.), a medium dense to dense clayey sand and then below was a sandy clay extending to 15m (50 ft.) ranging from stiff to very stiff. From 15m on completely to extremely weathered siltstone was encountered. The groundwater was measured at 9.5m (31 ft.) below the natural ground surface.DESIGN BRIEFThe existing building columns were founded on large pad foundations up to 4.4m (14.5 ft.) square, founded on the dense clayey sand. These pads would require temporary support to enable the excavation to proceed beneath them. Upon completion of the excavation under the pads new columns were to be constructed joining into the existing columns to transfer the load onto the new raft slab, 15m (50 ft.) below. The existing 10 floors were to be refurbished. It was planned to undertake all the temporary support and transferring of loads while the structure above was only able to provide a dead load. It was decided that any movement of the building would have minimum impact on a skeleton structure. During the temporary support of the columns, movements due to construction activities had to be monitored to understand any potential stresses in the structure above.The original design required beams to be installed under the pads and supported at either end by temporary piles that were to be founded below the level of the proposed excavation. (Refer to sketch 1). Wagstaff Piling considered that this methodology had difficulties in construction at all stages and did not provide facility for transfer of the load without significant movement of the structure above. Wagstaff Piling revised the design to attach beams to the columns above the pads using shear collars. (Refer to sketch 2). These beams supported on the temporary piles could then be jacked upwards to remove loads off the pads. This would enable removal of the pads with minimal movement of the 10-storey building above. Silica aerogels are promising in many applications because of their excellent properties. However, the real applications of pure silica aerogels are limited because of their fragile network structure. We have prepared silica aerogel composites using humic acid as a composite material for improving the performance of silica aerogels and valorization of humic acid. The silica hydrogel composite was prepared using sodium silicate as a precursor and humic acid as a composite material by acid-base catalysis and sol-gel method. The hydrogel was followed by freeze-drying to obtain composite aerogel. The microstructures, specific surface area, and functional groups of silica and composite aerogel were characterized using scanning electron microscope (SEM), brunauer-emmett-teller (BET) and fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR). The results demonstrated that the specific surface area of the silica composite aerogel was 307 m2/g under the condition of pH at 6, the mass ratio of silicon to humic acid (HA) at 3.82 and the molar ratio of N, N-dimethylformamide (DMF) to silicon at 0.9. X-ray diffraction (XRD) showed that the silica (composite) aerogels were amorphous. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) revealed that the silica aerogels lost weight from 150 to 250 °C and humic acid decomposed between 350 and 500 °C, and then the mass of the sample remained stable.

A small area in the Alabama Piedmont was studied to determine if metallic enrichment was associated with local magnetic anomalies. Cores from two holes in these magnetic anomalous areas have sulfide (pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite) film on slicken-side and fracture surfaces. Two hundred and fifty soil samples were collected from the top of the "B" horizon on 1, 000 foot centers over the general trend of magnetic anomalies. Soil samples were leached with a 1:2. 7 mixture of HF and H2SO4 and the dilute filtrate analyzed for Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni, Co, Cr, Mo, and Cd, using atomic absorption methods. Concentration-value maps were prepared for each element. Small areas of anomalous concentrations were defined for Cu, Pb, Zn, Mo, and Ni. Some of these areas generally coincides with magnetic anomalies. Concentration values (ppm) range from: Cu 165.0 - 0. 5; Pb 265. 0 - 0.0; Zn 1386.0 - 43. 0; Ni 187.0 - 10.0; Co 207.0 - 6. 5; Cr 117.5 - 2.0; Mo 95.0 - 0.0; and Cd 32. 5 - 2.0. Studies of other magnetic anomalies appear warranted.

HISTORICAL ORIGIN OF THE EXPORT CREDIT AGENCIES Almost since the inception of international commerce sellers, having manufactured and/or sold and shipped goods to an overseas buyer, have been obliged to accept the risk that they will not be paid for one reason or another. There are many reasons why payment may not be forthcoming, for example, the goods may be lost at sea, or rejected by the buyer or the buyer nay simply not be creditworthy. These risks were brought into sharp relief as international trading became more sophisticated and the practice of giving credit to buyers gathered momentum. Inevitably enterprises sprang up which offered same mitigation of this exposure, accepting houses and later confirming houses and banks were prepared to assure acceptable credit risks an behalf of the seller, usually by discounting trade paper, and for many years the market ticked over reasonably satisfactorily. However, after the 1914-18 War international trade was at an extremely low ebb and its inherent risks were accentuated to a point where they were often commercially unacceptable. Yet a healthy and vigorous international market was indispensable to recovery of the world economy and a number of governments, led by the United Kingdom, perceived a need to offer their exporters a comprehensive form of insurance, particularly to facilitate the extension of credit to foreign buyers. In the United Kingdom the Export Credits Guarantee Department (ECGD) was set up to encourage trade through the provision of export credit insurance. Over the ensuing years others followed suit and now most of the developed trading nations and many developing nations have similar agencies. PRESENT DAY IDLE OF THE EXPORT CREDIT AGENCIES (ECAS ) Traditionally then the BA's role was to encourage trade through the provision to exporters of insurance against the risks of non-payment by overseas buyers of their goods and services. However, during the 1970's the manufacturing industries of most of the developed nations found themselves facing severe competition for business, particularly in the developing world. As a result the more aggressive ECA's began to introduce ancillary forms of cover designed to reduce exporters' risks outside of the credit field. For instance, most of the European agencies now have a form of cover against foreign exchange risks here contracts are denominated in currencies other than that of the exporter's country. Most of the agencies also provide cover to exporters against the risk of unfair calling of bid, advance payment, performance bonds etc and in certain countries, where high inflation rates were endemic, a form of cover against cost escalation. In certain circumstances it is also possible for an exporter to obtain cover against losses arising as a result of the involvency of a partner in a consortium or joint venture. These are all forms of insurance but, also during the 1970's, many of the national export credit programmes took a major step away from their original raison d'etre by facilitating the provision of preferential financing terns for the acquisition of capital equipment by an overseas buyer. This new line of business quickly became an important ingredient of major export financing packages and, as we shall see later, turned out to be extremely costly for the countries providing it.

In 2006, 14,885 mining operations reported employment data to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).1 Almost half (48.2%) were sand and gravel mines, followed by stone mines (30.7%), coal mines (14.2%), nonmetal mines (5.0%), and metal mines (1.9%).

The development of the Montreal metro extension Line 5 -Blue Line- toward the northeast are located between the existing Saint-Michel station and Anjou. It consists of 6-km long two-track tunnel, five new stations and six auxiliary structures. Most of the tunnel (5.5 km) will be excavated by a 9.6 m diameter shielded rock TBM and supported by a precast segmental lining system. TBM will be fitted for probing and preexcavation grouting to control water inflow into the tunnel during the excavation. This paper presents major design aspects of the TBM tunnel including alignment, geological condition, spaceproofing, precast segmental lining, and geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring.
