Regenerative conveyors with complex conveyor profiles place unusually stringent demands on the starting drive control. Depending on the nature of the conveyor loading, the drive must either provide a positive driving force to overcome conveyor friction and gravitational forces if the belt is empty or the inclined sections are loaded, or it must provide a retarding force to resist the gravitational load of decline sections to control the acceleration rate. This paper discusses the requirements of regenerative conveyors, reviews the working principals of fluid couplings, and examines their interaction by means of a case study of a 1700 m long regenerative conveyor utilizing a fluid coupling with a proportional brake control to provide controlled starting and stopping under all load conditions.

Canada has a long history of marine-related industry and onshore mining. Even so, commercial interest in marine mining, excluding seawater mineral extraction and offshore extensions of hardrock deposits such as iron and coal, has been sporadic; despite the fact that shelf mineral deposits supply a significant proportion of the national market requirements for many countries. Several factors have accounted for this including: a relative abundance of onland mineral desposits; the fact that onland deposits can be mined using conventional technology; and, a general lack of knowledge and public awareness as to Canadian offshore non-fuel mineral resource potential. In the mid-1970s the Department of Energy, Mines & Resources formed the Departmental Coordinating Committee on Ocean Mining. The Committee addressed the question of shelf non-fuel mineral resource potential and concluded that, while several reports had raised the possibilty of this alternative source, there had not been a systematic evaluation of the resource base. This led to the formation of a Shelf Working Group, whose task it was to outline and implement a departmental program to advance our knowledge of shelf resource potential. The flocculation and dewatering behaviour of kaolinite (non swelling) and smectite (swelling) clay dispersions has been investigated using hydrolysable metal ions Mn(II) and Ca(II) and anionic polyacrylamide-acrylate copolymer (PAM) at pH 7.5 and 10.5. A pH-dependent, specific metal ion adsorption behaviour, accompanied by a marked reduction in particle zeta potential and slurry shear yield stress, was observed to have a profound influence on the colloid stability of both types of clays. Due to the differences in the cation exchange capacity, the smectite clay dispersion required a higher amount of metal ions than kaolinite dispersion to produce similar effects. The adsorption density of the anionic PAM at the negatively charged clay particle surfaces correlated well with metal ion hydrolysis and adsorption behaviour, all of which had a strong effect on slurry settling rate and extent of consolidation. At pH 7.5 where Mn(II) ions hydrolyse, metal ion and flocculant adsorption densities were both greater in the presence of Mn(II) than Ca(II) ions. At pH 10.5, however, where Ca(II) ions begins to hydrolyse, higher adsorption densities were observed for Ca(II) ions in comparison with Mn(II) ions, as the latter hydrolysed completely and precipitated. The metal ion mediated flocculant adsorption led to improved hydrogen bond driven particle bridging and facilitated charge neutralisation flocculation mechanisms which significantly enhanced the dewaterability of both clay dispersions.

This paper will discuss the process for making lightweight aggregate, the waste materials that make good lightweight aggregate, the chemistry of making lightweight aggregate and finally a discussion of the commercial prospects for making lightweight aggregate from wastes. Svedala Industries has been making lightweight aggregate (LWA) from waste materials for the last ten years. Many clay-like materials, such as coal-fired boiler ash and washings from a granite quarry, can be used alone or with additional waste materials to produce a commercially saleable LWA.

There are many different words to describe mine closure, including rehabilitation, reclamation, restoration and decommissioning. Closing mining operations, mainly open pit mines, has required resolution of numerous issues. Mine closure plans involve environmental-protection issues, regulatory issues and community issues. The obvious, and often most expensive of them, is the physical rehabilitation of the disturbances and the elimination of long-term commitments and maintenance. This paper outlines mine closure planning and its important component, mine-site rehabilitation. Community consultation and involvement are also referred to as an important component of the mine-closure plans, which are required to ensure satisfactory mine site rehabilitation. Considerations of socioeconomic impact of mine closure and long-term responsibilities are presented.

Capital expenditure on sampling and blending is often very difficult to justify. The costs are easy to estimate but the benefits likely to be obtained by constructing good sampling and blending facilities are generally difficult to estimate. For instance, improving blending of the ore feed to a smelter would improve throughput, yield and controllability ... but by how much? Similarly, better sampling would allow processing conditions to be dynamically adjusted and would improve extraction ... but by how much? Predicting benefits often requires the use of simulation models which carefully distinguish between true grades, predicted grades and observed grades. The parameters of these simulation models must often be estimated from rather inadequate information. These difficulties are illustrated using three scenarios.

Determining the correct combination of mix components and water for high-density paste backfills that have the transport and deposition properties necessary for a mining operation is a difficult task. Rheologic properties cannot be determined without conducting full-scale pumping tests, and data from existing tests tire very limited. This paper presents the findings of investigations undertaken to determine if paste-backfill rheology can be determined using existing techniques and to determine which mix and system variables have the greatest influence on transport-pressure loss. Data from laboratory-scale pumping tests were used to produce a rheologic model of flow behavior for comparison, and a statistical analysis was conducted to determine the most significant factors affecting transport-pressure loss.

The mine pager phone to public telephone interconnect system permits mine paging telephones to be interconnected with the public phone system, thereby providing emergency and off-hours communications. The system, a push-to-talk, push-to-listen system, is compatible with any mine paging system utilizing dc voltage on the line to enable paging. A tone generator of the proper frequency enables an outside caller to page over mine pager system loudspeakers. A caller inside the mine can make an outgoing call to a preselected, preprogramed number with the use of a proper frequency tone generator. The system includes an automatic hangup timer that restricts the time off-line due to a wrong number or incorrect hangup to 20 seconds and 6 minutes, respectively.

New methods of analysing and modelling flotation circuits have been developed as part of the AMIRA P9 mineral processing research project. A study using these techniques was conducted on the Olympic Dam copper flotation circuit to provide the following outcomes: an estimate of the flotation cell hydrodynamic properties and froth performance characteristics, and identification of potential areas for improvement; an estimate of the feed floatability parameters for basic model development; and identification of potential flotation circuit improvement opportunities. A flotation circuit model of the Olympic Dam copper concentrator was developed using the data collected from mass balanced site surveys, along with hydrodynamic data, froth performance data and numerous laboratory batch flotation tests. The simulator that has been developed from the model has the ability to estimate the influence of selected changes (such as circuit changes) on flotation circuit performance. Several stream destination simulations were conducted to provide guidance for further testwork and possible circuit improvements. The results from these simulations are presented.

"Girth welding operations represent the rate-limiting step in pipeline construction. A joint industry-university program was set up to establish the field welding characteristics of large-diameter, high-strength line pipe.Theoretical work carried out at the University of Waterloo showed that pipe wall thickness and joint misalignment prior to welding has a marked influence on the lifting stresses acting on the root pass of girth welds. Pipe diameter and pipe ovality had negligible effects. Super-position of lifting and residual stress (caused by the fusion welding operation) highlighted regions of the weld bead most susceptible to hydrogen-induced cracking.The field welding characteristics of 1219-mm-diameter, 13.72-mm-wt Grade 483 line pipe were evaluated using a specially designed test rig. The principal test variables were lift height, delay time after root pass deposition, preheat temperature, pipe composition and joint misalignment prior to welding. For any given life, preheat and joint misalignment prior to welding had the most significant effect on cracking tendency.The output of this program has industrial significance and illustrates the beneficial features of university-industry collaboration.IntroductionField welding operations comprise the rate-limiting step during pipeline construction. Crack-free girth welds must be made in a wide range of weather conditions and consequently the field weldability of line pipe compositions directly affects pipeline integrity and construction economics.Pipe-laying practice comprises root bead deposition followed by a skidding operation involving lifting (or lowering) the pipe length onto skid s so that the next pipe length can be aligned prior to welding. Consider pipeline construction using 24.4-m lengths of 1219-mm-diameter , 13.72-mm-wt Grade 483 pipe weighing approximately 10,000 kg. Skidding involves loading a 3-mm-thick root bead by moving the free end of the pipe through vertical distances of up to 700 mm . The likelihood of cracking in these circumstances depends on the inherent crack susceptibility of the pipe composition employed, on the hydrogen content of the deposited weld metal and on how well the joint handles the external stressing caused byskidding."

Rio Tinto Technology and the Rio Tinto Foundation for a Sustainable Minerals Industry have funded the development of a practical floating module that can reduce water losses through evaporation from water dams at mining and mineral processing facilities by about 75 per cent. The modules, which are also suitable for use by farmers and communities, were designed for easy deployment, to allow the water to æbreatheÆ, harvest rainfall and resist wind speeds of more than 100 km/h. A large-scale demonstration trial will be conducted at the Northparkes Mine, located near Parkes (New South Wales, Australia). The objective of the trial is to demonstrate to Rio Tinto business units, community, farming and government groups the moduleÆs operating costs and water saving potential.

Common clay includes a wide variety of clay and other fine- grained rocks that are used in many ways. These clays are some- times classified as miscellaneous clay and shale. Most products made from them are fired and include such things as structural and face brick, drain tile, vitrified pipe, quarry tile, flue tile, conduit, pottery, stoneware, and roofing tile. Very large tonnages of these materials are bloated by firing to form lightweight aggregate, and large quantities are used in making portland cement (see the specific chapters in this volume). Uses not requiring firing of a finished product include filler for paint and other products and shale and clay used for packing dynamite in blastholes and for plugging oil and gas wells that are no longer in use.

Increased consumption of concrete in the Pacific Northwest has pushed aggregate resource development pressure from urban areas west of the Cascade Range to rural areas east of the Cascades. Some recent development has focused on barge and rail accessible off-reservation Indian allotments that are exempt from state and county regulations. These lands have their own unique set of challenges, especially when Federal and Tribal governments have conflicting goals and attitudes pertaining to resource development. This paper discusses issues of leasing, reclamation, Federal vs. Tribal authority, cultural resources, and the history of allotment.
