The United States continued to depend on imported bauxite during 1995. Domestic bauxite mine production remained at about the same level as in 1994. It amounted to less than 1% of total world production. All of it was used for nonmetallurgical products, such as abrasives, chemicals, proppants and refractories. Metallurgical grade bauxite was imported from 12 countries. Principal suppliers for this 10 Mt (11.1 million st) of ore were Guinea (39%), Jamaica (35%), Brazil (17%) and Guyana (8%). The average value of imports, c.i.f. US ports, was $31/t ($28/st). Calcined refractory-grade bauxite imports totaled235 kt (259,000 st). It had an average value of $112/t($102/st) c.i.f. US ports. China supplied 61%, Guyana30%, Hong Kong 4% and France 3%. Imports of other grades of calcined bauxite, primarily for the abrasives market, totaled 259 kt (286,000 st).They were supplied by China (59%), Greece (20%), Brazil (14%) and Australia (6%). The average value was$74/t ($67/st) c.i.f. US ports.

During the past three or four years, the fabricators of silicon-bronze alloys have endeavored to induce users of phosphor bronze to use instead the silicon-bronze alloys, claiming that the silicon bronzes are superior to the phosphor bronzes for switches and springs, or where high fatigue resistance is desired. This paper gives the results of tests comparing several phosphor bronzes with a 3 per cent silicon bronze and a copper-nickel-tin alloy (Adnic), all processed by the Scovill Manufacturing Co. So far as the authors are aware, sheet-metal fatigue tests have not been made on any of the alloys included in this report, except on one phosphor bronze, material C, Table 1, which was tested by Townsend and Greenall1. Endurance Limit The majority of fatigue tests are designed to determine the endurance limit of a material. The number of repetitions of stress that will serve to establish an endurance limit varies with different materials. For ferrous materials, H. F. Moore2 has shown that stresses that do not cause failure up to 10,000,000 stress cycles will not cause failure up to 100,000,000 (and sometimes to 1,000,000,000) cycles. Thus an endurance limit for ferrous materials can be determined with a minimum of 10,000,000 stress cycles. For nonferrous materials, no such generalization holds. R. R. Moore3 has shown that for manganese bronze and elektron metal, 13,000,000 and 28,000,000 cycles, respectively, will serve to determine an endurance limit, while certain duralumin specimens gave no indications of having reached an endurance limit up to 400,000,000 stress cycles. This paper deals with concentration of hematitic-limonitic iron ores. The ore sample obtained from Karakuz (Turkey) contain:. about 40-46 I Fe. First, a low intensity magnetic separation process was employed to separate the strongly magnetic particles cf "-10+2 mm" and "-2+0.075 mm" size fractions and magnetic concentrates with 59.1 % Fe aid % 58.0 Fe were obtained respectively. The non-magnetics of both fractions were then fed to a nigh intensity permanent magnetic separator. The Fe contents of "-10+2 nun" and "2+0.075 mm" size fractions were increased from 28.2 to 51.13 and from 35.4 7. to 43.25 respectively after single pass. Easing on these results, it was concluded that the high intensity permanent magnetic separator could he used as a pre-concentrator f.7.1- hematitic-limonitic Karakuz iron ore.

In 2006, a total of 280 metal mining operations reported employment to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).1 Metal mines were the smallest mining commodity sector, comprising 1.9% of all mining operations. ? Gold mines comprised 46.8% (n=131) of all metal mining operations. Other common types of metal mines were copper ore (n=34; 12.1%), and iron ore (n=33; 11.8%). ? Nevada had the largest number of metal mines (n=53; 18.9%), followed by Alaska (n=31; 11.1%).

The Department of Mineral Resources of Thailand is organising, on behalf of the Government of Thailand and the International Tin Council, the Second Technical Conference on Tin. The Conference will be held at Sala Santitham, Bangkok from 18th to 22nd November, 1969. Papers will be grouped under three main headings: (i) Geology and prospecting; (ii) Mining and ore dressing; (iii) Miscellaneous, e.g. stimulating production, metallurgy, estimation of reserves etc. Pre-prints of papers will be circulated. A field trip to Southern Thailand has been arranged for 25th November to 2nd December, 1969. Details of the Conference and the field trip can be obtained from Mr. W. Fox, International Tin Council, Haymarket House, 28 Haymarket, London, S.W.l, England.

An investigation was carried out by Mintek to investigate the influence of a range of alloying additions (vanadium, cobalt, zirconium, antimony and germanium) on the formability and hardenability of alloys with gold content >90 wt%. This paper reports on the hardening mechanisms that can be utilised to increase the hardness of gold (>90 wt% Au) by conventional alloying, as well as the hardening effect obtained by alloying with specific elements. Preparation methods for the alloys are described, which include the steps of melting, annealing, quenching, cold working and age hardening. Focus is given specifically on alloys that were developed at Mintek with a gold content >90 wt%, which are not only harder, but exhibit good resistance to tarnishing and corrosion.

This paper presents a dynamic model for column flotation. The model equations are normalized and the dimensionless groups that are directly responsible in determining the column flotation behavior are identified. The resulting model equations are incorporated for computer simulation. Numerical results from computer simulations are analyzed to gather information about design and operation of column flotation devices.

Wastes generated by the mining, mineral processing and metallurgical industries now total about 1.8 billion tons annually. The wastes include gases, dusts, solutions and a variety of massive solid mineral materials such as tailings and slags all of which now must be disposed of with a minimum of environmental degradation and at an acceptable cost. Some of the metal and mineralconstituents have potential economic value and their recovery can augment our primary mineral and metal resource supply base. The resource potential of wastes generated by the iron and steel, aluminum, clay, phosphate, copper, coal mining and processing, nonmetallic, and selected secondary metals industries is identified. Information on current efforts being made to recover these resources and the technology now employed or under consideration are presented.

An oolitic phosphate ore composed of phosphate (mainly francolite) and carbonates as gangue has been tested for the suitability of the reverse flotation process. The samples were first ground autogeneously followed by the reverse flotation process. While the carbonates were floated by sodium oleate the phosphate was depressed by phosphoric acid. The effect of particle size, reagents type and concentration on flotation recoveries have been investigated to determine the optimum conditions. By this process, a run-of-mine ore containing 16.72 % P205 was upgraded to 28.00% P205 with a recovery of 77.0% The mechanism of optimum flotation with phosphoric acid observed at pH 6.3 is explained based on a relationship involving surface potentials and the ratio of required collector concentrations for the respective minerals.

The paper proposes two numerical models ot the mechanical behaviour of chalk. First, an elasto-plastic constitutive law reproduces the different plastic mechanisms of the chalk and the influence of pore fluids by introducing the concept of suction. Secondly, a model able to reproduce time dependence behaviour. Eventually, the paper gives a simulation of an academic reservoir during depletion and waterflooding phase. Der Artikel stellt zwei numerische Modelle des mechanischen Verhaltens der Kreide vor. Das erste ist ein elasto-plastisches Modell, das verschiedene plastische Mechanismen der Kreide und den Einfluss von Porenflüssigkeit, unter dem Begriff der Suktion, reproduziert. Das zweite Modell berücksichtigt darüberhinaus das zeitabhängige Verhalten. Schliesslich zeigt die Veröffentlichung eine Simulation einer theoretischen Lagerstätte während der Entleerung und der Wasserinjektion. L'article propose deux modèles numériques du comportement mécanique de la craie. Le premier est une loi élasto-plastique qui reproduit les différents mécanismes plastiques de la craie et l'influence du fluide interstitiel par l'introduction de la notion de succion. Le second est un modèle prenant en compte les effets différés. Enfin, l'article présente une simulation d'un réservoir académique durant les phases de déplétion et d'injection d'eau.

Results from current NERDDC funded research into the geotechnology of highwall trench mining methods have clear implications for mine planners in the areas of blast design, trench shape, location of the surcharge spoil and remnant coal pillar design.Adoption of successful smooth wall blasting techniques not only removes safety hazards from the trench face, but limits development of bedding partings at the seam contacts that interrupt the smooth transition of stress across the coal seam.

Senator Henry M. Jackson t D. Wash.) recently tossed a live grenade into the hardrock mining industry with proposed legislation to change provisions of the law governing Federally owned mineral values. Title Two of the measure would place hardrock mining agreements on a leasing basis similar to that which has applied to oil and gas since 1920. Known as the "Public Domain Lands Organic Act 01 1971" or S.921, the bill would monitor exploration by heavy machinery which ran destroy fragile ecology without any requirement for restoration or rehabilitation." Jackson said. Abandoned mining claims, lie continued, dot the public domain, "casting clouds upon the title to property which belongs to all the people.” and a minerals leasing system is "the most practical way of achieving the proper balance."

The grain refinement characteristics of four low-lead and lead-free copper base alloys for plumbing applications were investigated. These are leaded yellow brass (C85800). SeBiLOY III (C89550), silicon brasses (C87500 & C87800) and silicon bronzes (C87600 & C87610); Boron and zirconium were found to be the most effective .grain refiners for copper .alloys produced using the permanent mold cast processes. The study indicates that the type of grain refiner to be used is dependent on the alloy type, alloying constituents and their content. After grain refinement, hot tearing resistance of the alloys was improved but mechanical properties remained unaffected. Alloys refined with boron are prone to the formation of hard spots, which will have adverse effect on the surface quality of the castings during polishing and buffing.

Slurry flow, including flow through the charge, through the discharge grates, along the pulp lifters and its discharge from the mill is an important contributor to the efficiency of the grinding process within a SAG mill. Poor transport of finer ground material can adversely affect grinding leading to excess energy consumption and over-grinding of fine material. This paper extends a 1-way coupled DEM-SPH method to three dimensions and applies it to a 1.8 m diameter by 0.6 m long AG/SAG pilot mill. This provides detailed information on the internal flow of slurry within a SAG mill, including the prediction of dry regions and of slurry pooling. Full 3D analysis also allows the pulp flow patterns into and out of the mill via pulp lifter chamber to be investigated.
