President Sorenson read off the names on the committees. Mr. Whiteside, do you wish to make an announcement? MR. WHITESIDE: Yes, I would like to 'say a word. .4s you know, this afternoon you will be on your own, and I think some would like to go to Rifle. I wonder if we could get a vote on that now as to how many would like to go to Rifle, as they at Rifle would like to know so they can provide conveyances. There seems to be about 14 or 16 that would like to go to Rifle.

Black coals occur in most of the major sedimentary basins in Australia. In addition to the better known Permian coal occurrences of the Sydney, Bowen, Oaklands and Galilee Basins, coals of Permian age occur in the Arckaringa Basin in South Australia, the Bonaparte Basin in Northern Territory and the Collie, Perth and Canning Basins in Western Australia and the Tasmania Basin in Tasmania. Coals of Triassic age occur in the Ipswich Callide and Tarong Basins in Queensland, the Tasmania Basin in Tasmania and the Leigh Creek area in South Aus- tralia. Coal bearing rocks of Jurassic age occur in the Mulgildie Basin and Maryborough Basins in Queensland and in both the Queensland and New South Wales portions of the Clarence Moreton Basin and Surat Basins. They also occur in the Perth Basin in Western Australia. Rocks of Cretaceous age known to contain coal occur in the Styx, Maryborough and Laura Basins in Queensland, the Gippsland Basin in Victoria and both the Queensland and New South Wales portions of the Surat Basin. The coal measures have been deposited in a variety of sedimentary environments and the coals vary widely with regard to thickness, extent, banding characteristics, maceral and ash content. However, they are generally of low rank and most are suitable only for steaming.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the main reactions of coal gasification by steam. Coal (minus 70 mesh)-water slurry was fed into a laboratory-scale tube-coil gasifier to show the effects of residence time (0.6 to 1.1 sec), steam-coal ratio (2 to 11 lb/lb), and temperature (1,600° to 1,900° F), at about 1-1/2 atm. Devolatilization was very rapid: about 70 pet of the coal's volatile matter evolved within 0.6 sec at about 1,600° F; temperature increase released more volatile matter until about 95 pct was driven off at 1,900° F. Devolatilization was not increased by raising steam concentrations and was only slightly increased by extending residence time. Below 1,600° F, there was no evidence of the steam-carbon reaction, but at 1,900° F more than 80 pct of the coal's fixed carbon was converted to gas; the conversion was increased Significantly by increased residence time and steam concentration. The water-gas shift reaction occurred simultaneously with devolatilization, and the steam-carbon reaction, approaching equilibrium with increased residence time and temperature and decreased steam concentration.

Sin embargo, la aplicación de este método en los minados de vetas de plata en las minas de Julcani de la Compañía de Minas Buenaventura, resultó de gran aporte. En ese sentido, el presente trabajo describe el proceso técnico de este método de explotación en esta producción de plata, asi como señala los beneficios económicos para la pequeña y mediana minería.

El presente artículo analiza el interés de la industria siderúrgica por el mineral de fierro metalizado. Para ello se prevee una rápida elevación en la demanda de materiales ferríferos directamente reducidos por un notable aumento en las actividades siderúrgicas en los próximos 10 a 15 años. La demanda de tales cantidades de acero generará una mayor necesidad de materias primas: mineral de fierro, arrabio, chatarra, carbón coquizable, combustibles y energía, que en casi todos los casos apoyan la necesidad de emplear mineral de fierro directamente reducido. En ese sentido, el perfeccionamiento oportuno de una técnica de pre-reducción de amplia aplicación resulta importante y esencial.

This paper will focus on the development of a third generation control system, PlantStar 2000, for mineral processing applications. The combined value of production of natural abrasives, which include tripoli, special silica stone, garnet, staurolite, and emery, decreased about 24% in 1992. The decrease in the value of tripoli production was the result of a decrease in total production. Emery decreased owing to a decrease in the volume of the material produced. Special silica stone experienced a significant increase in unit value and decrease in the quantity produced. Garnet showed a 6 % increase in quantity and a 36 % decrease in unit value. Staurolite decreased about 27 % in the quantity produced and value compared with those of 1991. The fused aluminum oxide industry showed a slight increase in the quantity produced and a 4 % increase in the value of production. The silicon carbide industry saw a 7 % increase in the quantity produced and a 10 % increase in the value of production. Combined, the industries increased 4 % in quantity and 6 % in value compared with those of 1991.

Although nickel was in use in alloys long before the Christian era, the metal was not discovered until 1751, when Cronstedt recognized it in niccolite from Sweden. The Chinese apparently used a nickel alloy, known as "pahfong" thousands of years ago and Persian coins dating farther back than 200 B.C. consist of a copper-nickel alloy similar to some of those now in use in coins. The pure metal was first prepared about 1775 and the metal was refined for commercial purposes some years later. The nickel industry did not attain much prominence until the ores in New Caledonia were discovered. Exports of ore from that country began in 1875 and since that date there has been an ever-increasing world output of nickel and a great expansion in the uses of the metal except during short periods of commercial and industrial depression. Previous to 1875, for a number of years, Norway was the chief producer, although the metal was mined also in Sweden, Finland, Italy, Germany, Austria, France, China, the United States and other countries. With the discovery of nickel deposits in the Sudbury district, Ontario, a new factor was introduced into the nickel industry and Sudbury has since become the overwhelmingly dominant feature in the world's nickel markets. Although nickel was first discovered in Canada as early as 1848 near the north shore of Lake Huron and nickel-copper sulfides were found in 1856 by surveyors working close to the present location of the important rnine at Creighton, in the Sudbury field, it was not until 1883 that any importance was attached to this field. In that year copper sulfide attracted attention where the main line of the Canadian Pacific railroad was being projected across Canada to the Pacific coast. Mining began near this discovery in 1889 but in the meantime operations had begun in 1886 in other parts of the field and by 1890 about 100,000 tons of ore had been raised. In the Sudbury field, as in Norway and at the old Lancaster Gap mine in Pennsylvania, the ore was first mined for its copper content and difficully in the refining of the copper led to the discovery of the important proportions of nickel in the ore. This report analyzes mine fires for all U.S. underground and surface coal mining categories by state and2-year time periods during 1990–1999. Risk rate values are derived, and ignition source, methods of fire detection and suppression, and other variables are examined. The data were derived from Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) mine fire accident publications and verbal communications with mine personnel. The analysis will provide the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, MSHA, and the mining industry with a better understanding of the causes and hazards associated with mine fires and will form a basis for future fire research programs.
