We have developed a new wireline hydrofracturing technique for in situ stress measurement which eliminates the need for drill rig and drill rod and renders the tripping of the straddle or impression packers continuous, fast, and inexpensive. Wireline conductors facilitate the use of downhole pressure transducers. We have confirmed the suitability of the new technique by testing it in a deep hole near the Monticello Reservoir, South Carolina. Our measurements indicate two local stress fields, one of them apparently linked to the impoundment-related induced seismicity.

El presente estudio revela la geología del yacimiento diseminado de cu-mo de almacén de Ica. Este depósito porfirítico, inicialmente estuvo compuesto de microgranito y pórfido cuarcífero, los cuales son relacionados con los procesos de alteración y mineralización del depósito. Posteriormente, estos eventos intrusivos de postmineralización están representados por un enjambre do diques de composición decítiica, pórfido diorítico cuarcífero y andésitico. Asimismo se describe el proceso de mineralización y la distribución de este mineral, la alteración hidrotermal y el zoneamiento de la mineralización-alteración.

El presente trabajo señala los cambios realizados en el procedimiento de completamiento de los pozos petroleros desde 1958 y evalúa los efectos de las nuevas técnicas introducidas en el sistema petrolero. Para ello, se revisa la historia de la producción de las cuatro áreas que tienen suficientes pozos para comparar lo métodos antiguos y nuevos de completamiento. Asimismo se realiza un análisis de los costos de completamiento para los mismos pozos que fueron considerados en la comparación de productividades. De la comparación establecida entre los métodos antiguos y los nuevos procedimientos, se encontró que el nuevo estilo conduce a recuperaciones totales más altas a un costo menor. El otro beneficio estriba en un mejor control de entradas de agua o gas y una mejor adaptación futura de los pozos a posible inyección de agua o a cualquier otro proyecto de recuperación secundaria.

The development of novel methods for the investigation of the subsoil contributes to the improvement of geotechnical research, enhances the obtained geotechnical characterization and may reduce the investigation cost by reducing the number of required tests. Non-destructive testing methods, performed either in situ (i.e. electrical tomography, seismic refraction, etc) or in the laboratory can provide initial data and perhaps estimates of rock/soil properties. This study focuses on the development of rock material properties and/or characteristics based on non-destructive laboratory testing of a number of stones, ranging from porous (bioclastic) limestones to impervious marbles. Seismic velocity measurements as well as attenuation signals were digitally recorded using a digital oscilloscope. Data were processed using a novel technique of spectral analysis available through special Matlab packages employing Fourier transform methods. More specifically, the NFFT (Non Equispaced Fourier Transform) transformation was applied to seismic waves traveling through the subsoil using the Autosignal program (by Seasolve) and the Specgramdemo program included in the Signal Analysis toolbox of Matlab 6.5 (Mathworks). Results indicate a definite relationship between the frequency content of the signal and the rock type as well as the degree of saturation of the specimen.

Towards the goal of a better understanding of the structure-proton conductivity relationship in PEM materials, this project concerns the design of ordered polymeric solids containing well-defined sulfonate aggregates. The approach employed involves the templation of sulfonated monomers using core principles of crystal engineering. In addition to sulfonate groups, the monomeric units contain crosslinkable functionalities to enable formation of a covalently linked network. The templation strongly directs the construction of well-defined sulfonate clusters and aggregates. Structural, sorption and conductivity data for the networks will be shown.

In this paper, the state?of-the-art mitigation measures implemented for the final reclamation and closure of a pyrite concentrate stockpile at Platia Karra, Stratoni mines, Greece, are presented.

Through a unique Department of Commerce program a group of US mining equipment manufacturers spent 18 fruitful days in the, Far East, meeting with government and industry leaders in Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philip¬pines. The US Mining and Exploration Equipment Semi¬nar Mission, held April 3-20, 1979, was sponsored by the Special Activities Group of the Commerce Department's Office of International Marketing. The program included a series of technical overview papers presented by the manufacturers, aimed at promoting the sale of US products and services throughout the world.

A study was made of the United States Bureau of Mines chlorine-oxygen leaching process for complex sulfide concentrates. The investigation sought to determine the kinetic order and mechanisms involved in the reactions between galena and sphalerite with chlorine. The influence of copper on the extraction rates was also studied. It has been shown that the rates of reaction of chlorine in aqueous solutions with sphalerite and galena are both zero order at 373 K with rate limiting step being the chemical reaction. Addition of cupric chloride increased the extractions of both lead and zinc.

Specifications on the chemical, physical and metallurgical properties of the blast furnace burden are steadily becoming more stringent, especially in those countries where higher raw material and energy costs can be overcome only by improved technology. This paper describes the test methods for the relative predetermination of the criteria where the effects of temperature, gas composition and physical load in the blast furnace are duly considered. Data are presented to show the correlations between burden material tests and blast furnace results. Possible test methods for the direct reduction process are also discussed.

The coal basins that formed near the margin of Permian Australia were comparable in size with the Appalachian coalfields and with the European fields between Wales and Poland. They formed on the foreland side of a growing orogen in a system of linked transform basins formed by transtension on strike-slip faults. They were terminated and compressed when the Gympie volcanic arc was accreted to the orogen. Another huge system of Permian coal basins extending far inland from the Permian coast was also terminated when the Gympie Terrane was Accreted.

The paper describes a technique by which large concrete boxes are unobtrusively inserted beneath existing highway and railway infrastructure to form new subways, culverts and under-bridges, thus avoiding the inconvenience and costs of disruption to traffic associated with traditional cut and cover techniques. A series of project examples, undertaken in the United Kingdom and United States, are used to illustrate the design and construction of the box structures, together with the technology required to control ground disturbance in the tunnel face and around the box, and the jacking systems necessary for box installation.

At the Wilkes-Barre Meeting of the Institute, Dr. J. Lawrence Smith, in the course of his remarks on some peculiarities in the composition of irons, alluded to the so-called " bucltshot" iron, and exhibited a specimen of this material. He said that when the small granules, or shot, were separatetl from the mass, they could be flattencd under the hammer, and inferred that these particles had been decarburized by the blast before sinking into the hearth of the furnace, and thus we had the exceptional production of wrought iron in the blast furnace. I have recently obtained a characteristic specimen of this variety of iron from one of the furnaces at Orbisona, Pa. Considerable uncertainty existed as to its true nature and the conditions of its production. Its weight seemed to preclude the idea that it containetl much or any slag, yet its lack of strength indicated that it was not homogeneous cast iron. At times considerable quantities had been produced, which could only be utilized by charging in the furnace and remelting. The specimen, on the freshly fractured surfacc, appeared to consist of flattened globules of iron cemented together by a bluish material which one would naturally suppose to be slag, and qualitative examination for lime strengthened this supposition. It was quite difficult to obtain drillings, as there was a tendency to split in several directions as soon as pressure mas applied; but enough was obtained to undertaltc quantitative determinations. They were found to consist of two portions—one attracted by the magnet, and the other not. By repeated separation the magnetic portion was found to be 94.44 per cent., and the non-magnetic 5.56 per cent. Analyses of these gave the following results: Magnetic Portion. Non-magnetic Portion. The University of Missouri-Rolla (UMR) has historically maintained a manual, paper inventory of explosives stored and used at the university. Although this system was accurate for inventory control and reporting criteria, it was labor intense and delays in record keeping were predominant. A directive from the university’s administration mandated the development of a precise real time system “on-line” to maintain and control the explosives inventory in line with the universities new chemical tracking policies.

Typical zinc oxides recovered from wastes like steel mill dusts and neutral leaching residues are of a low quality because of impurities like fluorine, chlorine, lead and others. Therefore, they are not comparable to technical grade zinc oxides produced in “French” or “American Process”. Some new developments, most of them still in pilot scale, try to establish processes where higher qualities of the product should be achieved. Zinc oxides are not only supposed to be an input material for electrolytic zinc production. Far more, they should find their way into the zinc oxide market as a substitute for technical grade zinc oxides. Furthermore, a new field of application for these oxides has been investigated at the department of Nonferrous Metallurgy, University of Leoben. Because of a higher acceptance concerning different impurities in relation to zinc winning electrolyses, a use in electrolytic galvanizing shows an interesting option. Therefore, synthetic zinc oxides with different impurities were generated to study the effect of these impurities especially on the quality of the zinc layer. Typical steel sheets, as used for car bodies, were electrolytically galvanized and the resulting layer was analysed, as main impurities compounds of fluorine, chlorine, iron, lead and calcium were used for the investigations. Beside the layer quality, the current efficiency and the possible galvanizing speed were examined. The results give an indication, weather such an alternative application can be feasible from a technical and economical point of view or not. 597
