Based on the stepwise strain features and the strength reduction law of the surrounding rock in extremely softrock roadway, this paper proposes a dynamic supporting principle. A new kind of stepwise reinforced technology, which consists of immediate shotcreting, timely bolting and delay grouting, was optimized after thorough analysis and illustrated with a successful engineering example in extremely difficult softrock roadway.

This Bureau of Mines report presents an iterative approximation method for microseismic source location that was developed to adapt microseismic techniques for rock structure analysis to investigations of surface problems, such as slope failure in an open pit mine. The source location method and two derivative location algorithms are described in detail, and the speed and accuracy of the two algorithms are compared.

Optimum autoclaving conditions were determined for separation of iron and manganese values from pregnant leach liquor produced in extracting manganese from low-grade umber are. The umber was leached with a synthetic anolyte similar to a recycle solution, used in manganese electrolysis cell operations, that had been renewed with ferrous sulfate and sulfuric acid. The equipment used and results obtained are presented for the several conditions employed. The kinetics of the separation were studied. Rate equations were derived for the formation of solid ammonium-manganese sulfate, (NH4)2 Mn2 (S04)3.

Previous studies on the blast furnace raceway zone have been undertaken at three levels of scale, namely: laboratory models at low temperature, hot models which simulate coke combustion in the zone, and tests performed on operating and dismantled blast furnaces. This paper reviews the results of this published work on raceways in order to illustrate the factors which affect the raceway shape, size and combustion characteristics. The Bureau of Mines as part of its research effort to minimize the generation of hydrometallurgical waste, investigated a sodium sulfide leaching-electrolysis procedure for treating hydrometallurgical residues for elemental sulfur and base-metals recovery. Research was conducted on a leaching residue from a lead concentrate. The following procedure was developed. 1. The elemental sulfur was dissolved as polysulfide with an Na2S solution. 2. The resultant metal sulfide bearing residue was oxidatively acid leached in a cationic membrane electrolysis cell; the metals were solu¬bilized at the anode, and a base was generated at the cathode. 3. The elemental sulfur was recovered from the polysulfide solution by neutralizing with the acid in the anolyte. Byproducts of the neutralization were H2S and a sodium salt solution. 4. Sodium sulfide was regenerated by reacting the H2S byproduct with the base in the catholyte. 5. Lead as PbCL2 was recovered from the anode residue by brine leaching, and the other metals were recovered from the sodium salt solution as metal sulfides. 6. The barren filtrate from the metal sulfide precipitation constituted the recycled electrolyte. Ninety-eight percent of the elemental sulfur, 98 pct of the lead, and up to 80 pct of other accessory metals were recovered from a residue obtained from the FeCl3-NaCl leaching of a lead concentrate.

The Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with McDermitt Mine, investigated a method for recovering mercury metal from mercury sulfide flotation concentrate by a hydrometallurgical technique. This preliminary report shows the feasibility of leaching mercury with a cupric chloride solution and electrowinning mercury from the solution. Proposed chemical reactions are shown in equations 1 through 3: 2CuC12 + HgS + 2CuCl + HgC12 + S°; (1) electrolysis HgC12 ?Hg + C12; (2) 2CuC1 + C12 ? 2CuC12. (3) A bench-scale leaching-electrowinning apparatus capable of treating 2.36 kg of sulfide concentrate in 11 days was operated continuously. An acid chloride solution containing, in grams per liter, 70 Ca, 60 Cu, 30 Fe, and 80 Hg was used as both leachant and electrolyte; 99.5 pct of the mercury was solubilized from the sulfide concentrate. Electrolysis of the leaching solution recovered mercury metal at an average current efficiency of 32 pct and an average energy consumption of 1.2 kwhr/lb Hg. Results from a preliminary economic evaluation indicated that a plant producing 31,500 flasks of mercury per year would have a capital cost of $3.7 million and an operating cost of $62 per flask of mercury.

Significant amounts of cobalt are present in readily accessible spent copper leach solutions. The Bureau of Mines investigated the feasibility of extracting cobalt from these solutions in a multiple-compartment ion-exchange (MCIX) column. The effects of aqueous flow rate, resin flow rate, column height, and compartment height on cobalt extraction were determined. Cobalt extractions of 92 pct or higher were achieved at solution flow rates of up to 5.5 gpm/ft of column cross-sectional area and an aqueous-to-resin flow ratio of 40:1. Overall cobalt extraction increased as the column height increased, but cobalt extraction per unit of length was more efficient in 8-and 12-ftco1umns than in an 18-ft column. Solvent extraction procedures were utilized to purify and concentrate the MCIX column eluates and produce a cobalt sulfate solution containing 70 to 80 giL Co. Metallic cathodes containing over 99 pct Co were e1ectrowon from this solution. Zinc, nickel, and copper byproducts were also recovered during processing of the ion-exchange eluates. Estimated total capital cost for a commercial-scale 10,000 gpm of a spent leach solution containing 26 million. With credits for zinc, nickel, and copper estimated net operating cost was $9.36/lb Co.

Determining the anisotropy of rocks has in the past been difficult and rarely attempted in engineering practice. Here we have developed a new practical methodology for measuring orthotropic anisotropy that requires only one hollow cylinder specimen to determine the anisotropy of a set, even when the directions of the anisotropic axes are unknown. Autrefois, la détermination de l’anisotropie des roches était difficile et elle a été rarement essayée dans la pratique de l’ingénierie. Voilà c’est nous qui avons mis au point une nouvelle méthodologie pratique pour mesurer le coefficient de conductibilité thermique de l’anisotropie qui exige un seul spécimen du cylindre creux afin de déterminer l’anisotropie d’une série, même si les directions des axes anisotropiques sont inconnues. Früher war die Bestimmung der Anisotropie von Gesteinen ein schwieriges Verfahren, das in der technologischen Praxis nur selten in Angriff genommen wurde. A series of performance studies were conducted using countercurrent column flotation to recover a marketable clean coal product from existing preparation plant fine waste streams. The test work was conducted at several preparation plant sites in Kentucky and Virginia using a 150-mm (6-in.) inside diameter column that was 5.8 m (19 ft) high. Both thickener feed and classifying cyclone overflow with a typical size distribution of 150 µm (100 mesh) X 0 were tested. The percent solids of the column flotation feed varied from 1.5% to 15% while the ash content ranged from about 30% to 60%. The concentrates produced contained 2% to 10% ash with Btu recoveries of nearly 90% using 0.12 to 1.25 kg/t (0.25 to 2.5 lbs per st) fuel oil and 0.12 kg/t (0.25 lbs per st) MIBC. These results were consistent with or better than results obtained in preliminary laboratory scale column flotation evaluation. Test results from seven different seams are discussed as well as scale-up relationships used to design a full-scale installation presently in operation.

In 1996, the Office of Surface Mining (OSM) and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) completed an Endangered Species Act (ESA) programmatic Section 7 consultation. From the resultant Biological Opinion, it was found that coal mining operations conducted under federally approved state regulatory programs would not likely jeopardize the continuation of federally listed species nor result in the destruction or adverse modification of critical habitats. The requirements of the ESA and their integration into the SMCRA permitting process and the responsibilities of the regulatory agency, the FWS and the coal operator will be discussed. Guidance on the development of protection and enhancement plans will be provided and site-specific examples given.

Developed in 1983, High Angle Conveyors HAc®s, are proven versatile systems for elevating materials continuously from a lower to an upper level, Such systems may also be used to lower materials continuously. The age of specialization has made man increasingly dependent on a larger number of different metals and minerals. Overexploitation during World War II and lavish squandering of irreplaceable mineral wealth in the past has resulted in the rapidly approaching exhaustion of some of the major domestic ore sources. History clearly points out that the United States cannot continue to be a world power on an "import to survive" policy. A constructive program of development and appraisal of the nation's mineral wealth, including the planned conservation of her resources, must be adopted. Strictly speaking, conservation of minerals must mean the orderly exploitation of our resources and the prevention of waste in use, with due regard for the future. Real concern for the future may not extend beyond a few generations. Eventually science and invention should take care of the problems arising from shortages of some minerals, and the national defense aspects of domestic deficiencies can be provided for by stock piling and other measures. Early conservationists had this viewpoint; but with a rapidly developing industry and population, a farsighted policy that would deny full realization of immediate ambitions became unpopular. Consequently, the politically minded conservationist broadened the concept to include "prudent use of resources" and brought under the conservation umbrella

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the use of unsupported liquid emulsion membranes (LEM's) for the extraction of copper from relatively dilute aqueous solutions (=0.3 and 2.5 g/L Cu), The performance characteristics of the three main unit operations of an LEM circuit (emulsion generation, metal extraction, and emulsion breaking) were assessed in laboratory-scale batch tests. In single-stage extraction tests using 2.5-g/L Cu feed solution, emulsion membranes extracted up to 94 pct of the copper from solutions without pH adjustment and 99.7 pct when the pH was maintained at about 2.5. Simulated two-stage crosscurrent and countercurrent circuits extracted all but 3 and 4 ppm of the original copper content, respectively. Extraction data from solutions containing mixtures of metals indicated a strong preference for Cu2+ extraction when oxime-type extractants were used in the LEM; however, some coextraction of Fe 3+ and Zn2+ was experienced. An electrostatic coalescer was used to break the copper-loaded emulsions for separation of the component phases. Up to 96 pct of the contained stripping solution (internal solution) containing the extracted copper was separated from the organic phase of the emulsion membrane. The recovered organic phase was recycled without apparent problems.

Studies of a protium treatment for grain refinement of a + ß type titanium alloy are reviewed and recent experimental results are introduced. Protium treatment consists of the following three processes: (1) protium absorption, (2) martensitic transformation and hot working, and (3) final treatment for protium desorption and recrystallization. A combination of these processes results in the ultra-fine grains of 0.3 to 0.5 µm in diameter with high angle boundaries. The ultra-fine-grained material exhibits superplastic elongation of over 9000%. Superplastic forming was successfully used to fabricate a denture base. These materials may be widely applicable as biomaterials in various medical industries.

WHEN your good secretary was kind enough to ask me to speak tonight I was rather reluctant to do so lest it be just another case of a man who has been abroad inflicting himself on his friends. So if anybody wants to walk out on me it will be perfectly all right. In the matter of statistics, geography, geology, and the like, you can get more from an encyclopaedia than I can tell you. For that reason I want to restrict myself to mentioning just a few personal impressions of that great country, Australia. About ten days ago I met the professor of mining from the University of Adelaide. In our conversation, which ran into a discussion of the relative characterstics of the two countries, he asked me whether it was fair to think of Australia as a land of strikes and not think of the United States as the home of murderers, bootleggers, and gangsters. At any rate those are the things most prominently played up in the news from the respective countries, so you can see how distorted our conceptions can be.

This paper describes the techniques implemented at Randfontein Estates to develop twin-haulages at 'high speed'. An operation which culminated in the world record advance for twin-end multiblast cyclic development in hard abrasive quartzites. A major expansion project was planned for the mine, with the sinking of a third twin-shaft system (to be known as Cooke No. 3), to raise the level of ore production from 3 500 000 to 5 000 000 tonnes per alumm. Subsequent redesign of the proposed shaft system as a single 9 m brattice wall shaft took place, reducing the planned shaft sinking period by 12 months and saving an estimated R 250 000 (U.S. $ 330 000) in sinking costs. The advancement of the Cooke No. 3 Shaft sinking and development programme necessitated a rapid excavation schedule for two interconnecting twin-haulages from the existing Cooke No. 2 twin shaft complex to provide a second means of egress. An early holing between the two shafts would provide significant financial and technical benefits. Pre-development and equipping of shaft pillar excavations would enable a rapid shaft production build up and blocking out of at least one year's ore-reserves.

Digital simulation was used to model a proposed underground' train system. The trains are to haul ore from numerous loading points beneath the production area of the mine to a central underground dump location, and then return to the mine. The purpose of the simulation was to aid mine engineers in studying various alternatives and configurations regarding track layout, crusher (dump point) specifications, dispatch procedures, fleet size, and train length, among others. The simulation' model can also be used to study the same aspects of existing haulage systems. To accommodate a wide and initially unknown range of system designs, a modular model structure was developed with major components devoted to track routing, train movement, loading process, dumping process, and dispatch. Key statistics tabulated were number of trains dumped during a simulated week, queueing delays in the mine and at the crusher, crusher utilization, cycle time, and percent of time for each: activity (loading, moving, dumping, etc.). The simulation results were instrumental in identifying a train system design which would reduce queueing delays and meet production goals with a minimum of trains and track mileage.
