There are a number of methods for determining relatively small quantities of sulfur dioxide in air. However, those methods require fairly elaborate apparatus and laboratory facilities. Frequently in industrial hygiene surveys it is desirable to have a simple arrangement to obtain "on the spot" determinations. This has been accomplished for concentrations of sulfur dioxide of hygienic significance by using the midget impinger and decolorizing a starch-iodine solution.

"A paper called “Global Experience with Soft Ground and Weak Rock Tunneling under Very High Groundwater Heads” was presented at the North American Tunneling 2006 conference (Holzhäuser et.al 2006). It summarized global experience with earth pressure balance (EPB) and slurry shield tunneling on nine projects that encountered groundwater heads ranging from 6 to 11 bar. Since then, additional projects have been completed with groundwater heads ranging from 7 to 15 bar. Of these, the high pressure tunneling experience on the Lake Mead Intake No. 3 project in Nevada and on the Eurasia Tunnel (Istanbul Strait Crossing) had the greatest lengths of tunneling at face pressure over 7 bar. Experience with sustained pressurized face tunneling at groundwater heads over 7 bar and risk management observations are the focus of this paper. INTRODUCTION High groundwater head, particularly at 7 bar or more, is a major challenge when tunnelling in high permeability ground and on drives long enough to require cutter changes. It has a strong impact on design and operation of Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) in order to protect the main bearing from contamination, prevent excessive groundwater inflow, ensure face stability and enable access to the cutterhead and excavation chamber for maintenance. During the past 20 years, TBM manufacturers and suppliers have made tremendous improvements that allow tunneling at groundwater pressures to 17 bar or more. The most significant risk with high pressure tunneling is generally that of excavation chamber access and potentially the cutterhead for cutter changes, cutterhead repairs and TBM maintenance. Hyperbaric interventions are possible and safety variances have been approved for saturation dive interventions at pressures as high as 17 bar (Lake Mead Intake No. 3). While high pressure hyperbaric intervention equipment is available and safety approvals can be obtained at many locations, few contractors consider the cost and risk of hyperbaric interventions over 7 bar to be acceptable as the primary means of excavation chamber access. Experience with high pressure tunneling prior to 2006 was summarized in a paper entitled “Global Experience with Soft Ground and Weak Rock Tunneling under Very High Groundwater Heads” (Holzhäuser et.al 2006). That paper provided information on 9 projects: South Bay Ocean Outfall, San Diego; Channel Tunnel (French Side), France; Storebaelt Tunnel, Denmark; 4th Elbe Tunnel, Germany; Wesertunnel, Germany; Westerschelde Tunnel, Netherlands; St. Petersburg Red Line, Russia; Nara Prefecture Water Conveyance Tunnel, Japan; and Tokyo Wan Aqua Line Tunnel, Japan – see Table 1."

Previous interrogation of German scientific personnel by numerous in- vestigators and the examination of evacuated documents indicated that fur- ther information was desirable on a miscellany of products and processes of interest to the Petroleum Industry. Accordingly, Dr. Pier and a large number of other men of the I.G. Farbenindustrie, A.G. plant at Ludwigshafen/ Oppau were further interrogated in July-1945. The information contained in this report supplements that previously reported in the CIOS report of 16 August, 1945: "Report on Investigations by Fuels and Lubricants Teams at the I. G. This paper describes the methods used for the ventilation of raises, sublevels and drawholes at Cominco's Sullivan mine. The problems involved in ventilation during blasting, drilling and scraping operations are first re-viewed, and then the air mover, a piece of equipment developed at the Sullivan mine, is described. The design of this device is discussed, along with the operating procedures used. Some figures are given to show the effectiveness of the method. THE Sullivan mine, located at Kimberley in the southeast corner of British Columbia, is owned and operated by The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada Limited. Current daily production is approximately 10,000 tons. The mine is developed by sixteen levels over a vertical range of 2,000 feet. The total ventilation requirements, which amount to approximately 1,000,000 cubic feet per minute, are handled through a network of fresh air intake and foul air exhaust circuits. In addition to the many development and production headings, there are three crushing chambers and an extensive conveyor system which must be ventilated.

In the technique described and evaluated, detection of mercury is based on the principle of atomic absorption. An analog signal, produced when mercury vapor absorbs ultraviolet light, is converted to digital form and calibrated to mercury concentration. Interferences are eliminated by selectively trapping the mercury on gold. The lower limit of sensitivity, using a 1-gram sample, is 5 parts per billion. A model of the instrument mounted in a station wagon has been tested successfully in the field.

"Asbestos" is not the name of a distinct mineral species but is rather a commercial term applied to fibrous varieties of several minerals. The origin and significance of names applied to asbestos by early writers are discussed in the section devoted to sources of supply and terms employed in ancient times. VARIETIES The most useful variety of asbestos is chrysotile, a fibrous serpentine the composition of which is expressed by the formula H4Mg3Si209. Chrysotile is characterized by a strength and flexibility that permit the use of the longer fibers for spinning. The bulk of the world production of both long and short fibers, is of this variety.

"The notion of “value” has always been a subjective and contentious issue. Indeed, value is in the eye of the beholder. There are as varied methods and practices for valuing property, as there are industries in which they are applied. For example, there is replacement value, insurance value, salvage value, appraised value, book value, and fair market value, to name a few, although in the mining industry, valuations usually refer to fair market value.In the Canadian mining industry, at present, there are no comprehensive regulations or guidelines that specify which approaches or methods are appropriate for use in the valuation of mineral projects. In January 1999, The Mining Standards Task Force of the Toronto Stock Exchange and the Ontario Securities Commission recommended that the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) establish a committee to review and advise on approaches and methodologies for the valuation of mineral properties. Among the approaches to be considered are included the following: the discounted cash flow approach, the cost approach, the option pricing approach and the market comparables approach. In addition, methodologies differ depending on whether the project is at the exploration stage or the producing stage.The CIM Special Committee on the Valuation of Mineral Properties (CIMVal) expects that its final report will form the basis for a Canadian code or standard for the valuation of mineral properties."

Many deep well waste disposal. operations have adopted the technology of the petroleum industry but fail to make full use of the knowledge and experience upon which this technology is based. Inexperience in subsurface exploration commonly leads industrial personnel to an over simplified understanding of the complex subsurface rock/fluid environment and overly optimistic "degree of exploration /adequacy of knowledge" ratios. Several fundamental differences between disposal and petroleum production are discussed. In particular, the evolution of understanding of the subsurface in relation to degree of exploration is demonstrated by summarized case histories of such other forms of subsurface fluid exploitation as oil pro¬duction and underground gas storage, tracing subsurface interpretations from the initial exploratory concept to that of fullest development. Evolutionary changes in interpretation and their significance as applied to deep well disposal are stressed.

"INTRODUCTION Inertial classification, gravitational sedimentation centrifugation, and thermal precipitation arc techniques that can be used to collect particles for subsequent analysis or for particle classification. The inertial classifiers, which include impactors, virtual impactors, and cyclones, are widely used in the sampling or particles. Settling chambers, which include centrifuges as well as gravitational settling devices, are less widely used. Thermal precipitators arc seldom used.Impactors, in particular, have been used extensively, studied both theoretically and experimentally, and arc the instrument or choice for the determination or aerosol mass size distributions. Many versions or impactors arc available commercially and many more have been designed, built, and used in special studies.Virtual impactors are a more recently developed inertial classifier and possess a feature not round in conventional inertial impactors; namely, that the particles remain airborne after classification compared to the conventional impactor, where the particles arc collected on a solid surface. The feature or keeping particles airborne is important for transporting the particles to other particle-analyzing instruments, or to filters, and in concentrating particles larger than the cutsize in a small fraction of the total now."

The industrial types, sources, and quantities of USA tin residues are identified and the methods of treatment reviewed. The effect of a lower tin price, due to a current major world surplus of tin metal, is mentioned and covered in some detail. The names and locations of over 100 USA firms recovering tin residues are listed. Current smelting and refining charges are included to convert the residues into tin metal and alloy. The impact of the suspension of the LME daily tin price since October 24, 1985 to date, and the failure of the International Tin Council to support the Buffer Stock Manager are reported with comments.

Several foaming aluminum samples of different density were prepared in a semi-industrial scale experimental system. Their properties such as the energy absorption characteristics, mechanical properties, heat conductivity and acoustical properties were measured. The results showed that the foaming aluminum with a density of 0.5 to 0.6 g/cm3 has the best energy absorption and this makes it suitable as the ensuring bar of the automobiles and also as a cushion material for the engine. The foaming aluminum with a density of 0.25 to 0.4 g/cm3 has the best acoustical properties and heat conductivity resistance, which is suitable for the door filling material, the ceiling and the partition of the car engine.

Rules of thumb are ubiquitous in blasting. Typically presented as ratios, they assist with the initial assumptions of blast design and provide guidance for best practice. Examples include the blast hole diameter as a function of bench height, and stemming length as a function of hole diameter. The most common rules of thumb were developed in mid-20th century and it is important for a blaster to know if the rules of thumb are still reliable.

Some fundamental facts regarding noise are summarized. Guidelines for reducing plant noise are indicated, and simple means are discussed for determining, whether quieting of specific equipment items will reduce plant noise significantly. Design and installation recommendations are made for quieting chutes by means of dams, impact cushioning pads, impact shields, and damping materials, and for quieting; screens by means of resilient decks, lined screen bottoms, drive mechanism enclosures, and side plate additions. A brief account is appended of the wear and productivity performance of resilient materials observed in three cleaning plants.

The Southern 'B' lode orebody at the New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited (NBHC) mine, Broken Hill, is a continuation of the zinc-rich orebody that was first mined in NBHC in the 1940's. Preliminary diamond drilling in the early 1960's resulted in sufficient information to delineate the southern extension of the presently mined 'B' lode orebody, In 1966 the sinking of a 7.3 metre diameter circular shaft (No. 3 Airway) was commenced to improve the ventilation of the southern extremities of existing workings and to provide a base to further explore and develop the orebody extension. Development on four levels was started in the early 1970'.s to link the existing workings with the new shaft. Three possible mining methods - sublevel open stoping, loader cut and fill with ramp access and sublevel caving - were investigated and the decision was made to mine the orebody by transverse sublevel longhole stopes and pillars with trackless equipment and ramp access between the major working levels.

"INTRODUCTION The purpose of this paper is to investigate the potential for use of UAVs in underground mines and present a prototype design for a novel autorotating UAV platform for underground 3D data collection. The mining industry has recently shown increased interest in the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to assist in everyday operations [20, 11, 4]. Above ground, small UAVs are in some cases a more efficient, inexpensive, and safer alternative to manned aircrafts currently used for photography, inspection and security [6, 10]. For example, attaching camera, infrared and LiDAR payloads, UAVs can provide a low-cost method of obtaining highly accurate 3D photogrammetric data and aerial photography. UAVs are now commonly used in open pit mining operations for applications that include stockpile surveying, 3D pit modelling, facilities management, accident reporting, progress monitoring, and environmental assessment [11]. There are numerous companies offering UAV services for mining applications; e.g., UAV Geomatics, Leica Geosystems, Sky Futures, SenseFly and FlyTerra, to name just a few. Common services include stockpile and open pit volume computations, environmental assessment, aerial mapping and photogrammetry. Although the aforementioned services are thosemost commonly provided by UAV surveying companies, they may also add value to other daily mining operations. For instance, SenseFly offers pre and post-blast monitoring in order to identify the presence of misfires and wall damage. This data can also be used to reconcile the blast results with expected results. GEM Systems offers a UAV equipped with a magnetometer for mineral exploration surveys. Companies such as Barrick have even used UAVs for solids modelling at tailings dams and stability monitoring [11]. UAVs in mining have so far been mostly limited to surface applications. Harsh underground environments pose many obstacles for flying UAVs. The confined space, dampness, reduced visibility, air movement, and lack of control signal propagation hinders most operators from being able to fly a drone underground. It may be that truly practical uses for UAVs underground will require either autonomous or semi-autonomous flight capabilities. Although there are many difficulties with flying underground, the potential benefits from a working system could greatly improve mining operations. The potential benefits of deploying UAV platforms underground include access to unreachable and dangerous locations and removing personnel from unsafe situations. These benefits have the potential to greatly improve mine monitoring and mine safety. Research has shown that current UAV technologies exist that allow for autonomous indoor flight. Extensive research has been done to develop UAV systems that are capable of performing on-board simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM), which can allow them to navigate and map a foreign environment autonomously [5, 7, 1, 13]. Grzonka [7] successfully used an open hardware quadrotor to autonomously navigate and map an office building. The research outlines the localization, mapping, path planning, height estimation and control of the autonomous quadrotor. Other research has been done that exploits autonomous UAVs for search and rescue. Kassecker [9] proposed a software and hardware framework for a quadrotor capable of indoor and outdoor urban search and rescue and Rudol [19] developed a system for human body detection and geolocalization using an autonomous UAV.The use of autonomous UAVs in search and rescue has the potential to improve situational awareness and surveillance for a rescue team. Similar research has been done that uses autonomous UAVs for indoor exploration. Pravitra [15] outlined a strategy for autonomous exploration of miniature air vehicles (MAVs) within indoor environments and Rudol [19] developed a method for using an unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) and a UAV for cooperative indoor exploration. "The “Jameson Cell” flotation cell was developed at Mount Isa Mines in the late 1980’s to address deficiencies in our flotation column installations. Early base metal installations had a variable record. The test work and trials showed they made an improvement metallurgically when operated correctly, but performance of the early installations was hindered by a range of operational and maintenance issues. The installations needed to be more robust, and we needed a better understanding of how to successfully integrate the cells into the plant flow sheet.During the 1990’s, Jameson Cells had great success in coal fines flotation and organic removal in SXEW applications, and became the standard in these applications in Australia. These installations improved the cell design and materials of construction and the cell flow sheet design, to make it low wear with self-regulating control, producing good performance with little operator input.These improvements have enabled a fresh look at the use of Jameson Cells in base metals. Recent new installations have shown significant benefits in “hybrid” circuits, that combine the best features of both Jameson Cells and conventional flotation cells, achieving better overall circuit performance in a smaller footprint than either technology could do by itself.Case studies of successful base metal applications are discussed, using size-by-size mineralogical performance to explain the improved circuit performance. The new methods of flow sheet test work design are also described."

This paper deals mainly with the modernization in the coal loading system at the loading piers of the Dominion Coal Company, Ltd., Sydney, Nova Scotia. The history of the operation is briefly outlined, and the construction of the Company's new pier is described in considerable de-tail. Particular attention is paid to the bins and conveyors, and to the loading tower. The paper concludes with a description of the S.S. Cape Breton Miner, built specifically for the coal trade, and the unloading facilities at Lakeview, Ontario. Coal Shipping at Sydney C OAL from the mines operated in Cape Breton by the Dominion Coal Company, Limited, has been shipped from the International Piers, situated on the east side of Sydney Harbour, for over sixty years. There were three piers, of which two were active-ly used in the shipping of coal until 1964. Nos. 2 and 3 were high piers about 600 feet long, of wooden construction throughout. They were founded on' rock-filled cribs and creosoted piles driven into the harbour bottom, and each had two decks which carried standard-gauge railway tracks.

Most brittle solids are relatively weak in tension and this weakness can be very significant in determining their performance in structures and excavations. Consequently, accurate knowledge of the tensile strength of brittle materials has long been recognized as important. In the past, measurements of the tensile strength of materials such as concrete, ceramics, and particularly rock have been hindered by problems encountered in fabricating test specimens and in accurately loading them. These difficulties have resulted in a scarcity of published tensile strength data. This can be readily seen in tabulations such as Wuerker's "Annotated Tables of Strength and Elastic Properties of Rocks.

Certainly, one of the core processes for the recovery of fine magnetic susceptible iron ore particles, mainly hematite iron ores, is the wet high intensity magnetic separation or WHIMS. This paper outlines a variety of recent developments and innovative process designs in the JONES® type WHIMS. It highlights the latest examples of flow sheets in terms of the diversity of combined rougher, scavenger, cleaner stages and adds to this the new more advanced JONES® type WHIMS equipment technologies like the HIGH FLOW ? HF, the QUATTRO ? Q and the SPLITT OPERATION ? SP. As a result of the increase of the capacity and magnetic intensity, the specific production cost could be decreased. The high worldwide acceptance for this continuous development testifies for the success and state of the art technology.

Minerals processing operations use a significant quantity of fossil carbon to provide energy and as reductant. Greenhouse gas emissions from the use of this fossil carbon contribute to the global increase in anthropogenic CO2 emissions to the atmosphere. In the spirit of fostering thinking about a step change in this situation, this paper explores opportunities for the use of sustainable carbon from biomass sources in a range of mineral processing operations. The exploration shows that many common processes are contenders for fossil carbon replacement and that feasible scientific research by minerals processing technologists would add to deeper understanding of the potential for a sustainable bio-carbon based industry. It is also shown that there are many dilemmas on the social, environmental and economic fronts to be solved before a biomass based industry could become a reality.
