Backfilling at Vaal Reefs during the experimental phase has been carried out using cyclone-separated tailings which are transported underground hydraulically by means of a borehole. The selected tailings are piped from the borehole to the stope and then, after the addition of a flocculant, deposited in place via single or multiple nozzles. The successful performance of the backfill/stope system relies not only on the actual quality of the placed material, but also on the effective operation of stope filling. The success of stope filling relates to the complex, time- dependent interaction of backfill, stope and barricade materials, and the transport and placement procedures used. A comprehensive laboratory testing programme was carried out on backfill materials at Vaal Reefs in conjunction with the experimental stope- filling operation. The range of testing techniques corresponds to the requirements of each stage of the backfilling process. Where necessary, new or alternative techniques were sought during the course of the experiment to satisfy and facilitate better understanding of the different processes. These techniques comprise both routine quality control testing and research-oriented testing. The laboratory testing techniques appropriate to each stage of the backfill process are briefly discussed. This paper presents the main conclusions of the study and identifies areas for further research.

1. Introduction The new Cleuson-Dixence development project in the Valais region of the Swiss Alps, involves the construction of a new link between the Grande-Dixence dam (still world recordholder with a height of 300 m) and a power house on the banks of the Rhone consisting of approximately 20 km tunnels and shafts, and involving a fall of about 1900 m. This 1200 MW project will replace an existing 900 MW structure built in the 1960s, no longer considered efficient. The new project comprises a head race drift about 15.8 km long, a surge tank, an inclined cascade shaft 4,2 km long, and an underground power station. The work for lots C and D (head race drift from Tortin to Tracouet, surge tank, six adits ans the complete inclined shaft) was awarded to our group (Prader, Locher, SELL, Losinger, Evéquoz, Dénériaz, Imboden and Bouygues). The geological conditions are: Lower part of the shaft (300 m) : sedimentary - sandstone and soft tertiary sandstone. Field studies were conducted over a longwall coal mining operation to investigate the feasibility of using microseismic techniques to detect and to locate any areas of instability in the vicinity of the longwall. An array of geophones buried at depths of 3 to 8 m from surface were positioned approximately 130 m above the active area of the longwall panel. A mobile microseismic monitoring facility amplified, filtered, and recorded the microseismic activity sensed by the geophones. Microseismic events were detected at depths of at least 130 m and at horizontal distances in excess of 250 m from the source. Most events, which resembled decaying sinusoidal transients, had frequencies of 10 to 100 Hz, and particle velocities of 1 to 8 pm/s. Source locations for the 150 largest events were computed using a least-square travel-time-difference method. Both isotropic and unique wave propagation velocity models were considered when evaluating the source locations. Most of the events were computed to be within ± 30 m vertically of the coal seam and ± 15 m horizontally of the longwall face, when the unique velocity model was employed.

Sections and Student Societies, and Mining and Metallurgy. To these reports members are referred for further details. Finances.-Income for the year was the largest since 1930, the figure being $189,394, an increase of $18,803 compared with income for 1936, exclusive of a special Rocky Mountain Fund appropriation of $2500 in that year for visits to western schools and Local Sections. Major items of increase were: $8,000 from current dues and arrears; $7,700 from advertising in MINING AND METALLURGY and the two periodical "Technologies"; and $4,800 from sales of TECHNICAL PUBLICATIONS (pamphlets) and TRANSACTIONS volumes for both current and former years. Initiation fees and clues from new members declined $2,300, principally because of the larger 'proportion of Junior Members to Members among the new enrollments. Junior Members pay no initiation fee and dues are $10 compared with $15 for Members.

The Bureau of Mines performed a comparative study of nine sites at eight surface coal mines to determine if the presence of near-surface underground abandoned workings resulted in the generation of adverse long-duration, low-frequency blast vibrations. Six of the nine sites had underlying workings, and two had thick layers of low-velocity unconsolidated surface material. Extended seismic arrays were used to identify the vibration characteristics within a few tens of feet of the blasts and also as modified by the propagating media at distances over 1 mile. Production blasts and specially fired single-charge blasts allowed the determination of natural ground frequency and the influence of initiation delay timing. Vibration amplitudes from the production blasts at all sites exceeded historical norms, particularly at the greater distances. This contrasts with the near-normal results from single-charge blasts. Apparently, between-hole time delays were insufficient to separate vibrations from adjacent charges for the low-frequency waves present. Single-charge tests showed that the propagating media produced low-frequency, ground-roIl-type surface waves at nearly all sites. Large blasts at such sites could produce an unacceptable risk of vibration-induced cracks in nearby structures.

The importance of controlling respirable dust and methane gas levels in underground coal mining cannot be underestimated. While respirable dust can significantly affect the occupational health of underground coal miners, methane gas accumulations pose significant safety concerns for these same workers. Water sprays and machine mounted dust scrubbers offer effective control of respirable dust exposures and methane gas accumulations. Water must not only be applied carefully to avoid dust rollback to the machine operator but must create sufficient turbulence to remove dead zones that could contain high concentrations of methane gas. While the flooded-bed dust scrubber has been generally responsible for decreased worker exposures to respirable dusts, this device has proved effective in controlling methane levels at the face. This paper reviews practical applications of water sprays and dust scrubbers to control respirable dust and methane gas on continuous miner faces.

Two methods for electrowinning tungsten from wolframite [(Fe,Mn)W04] were investigated. The first method, direct electrowinning from wolframite concentrate dissolved in molten salt mixtures composed essentially of various combinations of sodium phosphates, sodium borates, and sodium halides, yielded impure products. The second method was electrowinning from a halide-tungstate melt that was obtained from a high-temperature, two-phase extraction of tungstic oxide (W03) from wolframite. Electrolysis in electrolytes prepared from addition of sodium metaphosphate (NaPO3) and boric oxide (B2O3) to the halide-tungstate melt produced tungsten metal of 99.9 percent purity. Tungsten carbide (WC) was electrodeposited from the halide-tungstate melt when the melt was adjusted to contain 82 mole-percent NaCI and 6.0 mole-percent each of W03, sodium metaborate (Na2B204), and caustic soda (NaOH).

With an increasing pressure to find efficiencies in the mining industry, operations are looking for continuous improvement tools to validate blasting procedures, a crucial and often overlooked area of the process. Using case studies completed at both small and large-scale mining operations, this technical paper proposes a practical methodology for pattern expansion studies, taking into account terrain parameters, rock quality and explosive strength. This technical paper will use a series of tools geared towards an economical continuous improvement procedure, using UAV particle size analysis to optimize blasting based on “generalized reduced gradient” for non-linear problems, with cost savings being the main objective. For the validation of this methodology, one scenario was created based on the operation’s budget: an economical continuous improvement plan that relied on manual data collection methods in order to baseline and optimize procedures.

ABSTRACT: Stiffness controlled test procedures performed with servo-controlled shear systems are the most versatile for simulating the wide range of boundary conditions expected in nature. Examples of a function controlled procedure in addition to dilatation controlled procedures are discussed for different characteristic behaviours. RESUMÉ: La rigidité a commandé des méthodes d'essai exécutées avec les systèmes asservis de cisaillement sont la plus souple pour simuler l'éventail d'états de frontière prévus en nature. The annual meeting of the St. Louis Section was held at the St. Louis Club, Saturday evening, Mar. 10, 1917. Philip N. DeWolf. Addresses were made by Mr. Moore and Mr. Stoughton. The routine reports of the officers were- presented and the Executive Committee named above was elected for the current year. The special business of the meeting was a report of progress concerning the arrangements for the Institute meeting to be held in the St. Louis Section district, Oct. 8 to 13, 1917. The general program for the meeting met with the cordial approval and cooperation of the members of the Section. Coal mines comprised 13.7% of all mining operations. • Bituminous mines comprised 92.5% (n = 1,825) and anthracite mines 7.5% (n = 147) of coal mining operations. • More than 70% of all coal mines were located in three states: Kentucky (29.0%), West Virginia (20.9%), and Pennsylvania (20.2%). • Bituminous coal mines reported the production of over 1 billion coal tons.

The initial results for the cyanide leach gold recoveries were very poor on a high-grade primary sulphide ore of 6.2 g/t Au with no silver. Subsequent mineralogy showed the ore to be a characteristic pyrite, carbonaceous refractory gold ore (double refractory). This was a very disappointing finding. A small scale gravity and flotation test programme was developed to produce a concentrate with the majority of the gold. This also failed with most of the gold remaining in the tailings. An ICP scan also showed variable levels of antimony. A Desktop Study was undertaken with minimal laboratory test work looking at Pressure Oxidation (POX), roasting, ultra-fine grinding, graphite passivation and consideration of any new technologies that might be applicable to this type of ore. The subsequent Study highlighted how difficult these double refractory gold ores are to process and highlighted some recent technology developments may be applicable. CITATION: Connelly, D, 2018.
