The method of charging a reverberatory furnace has changed many times since smelting was introduced in this country from the old smelters of Swansea, England. The cause of the latest change at the Garfield plant has been the excessive fineness of the charge due to fine grinding in the concentration of the crude copper ores. The many desirable features of deep-bath smelting as now used at Garfield have been proved. The old method of dropping the charge through holes in the arch (known as center-feed method) causes excessive dusting which makes heavy slag and flue-dust losses, also rapid deterioration of the silica brickwork of the furnace through fusion with the iron oxides from the dust. The purpose of this paper is to describe a gun feeder that was designed to overcome the disadvantages of the older methods of center feeding and still maintain the good features of deep-bath smelting with the hot finer charge. A gun feeder was designed to introduce the finely divided hot calcines under the moving gas stream of the combustion zone and still have them spread in a uniform blanket over the highly heated matte bath. The temperature of the furnace was so great that it was impossible to maintain a stationary feeder, so a movable feeder was designed that could be introduced into the highly heated zone and be withdrawn after the charge had been dropped. It was necessary to protect the nozzle of the gun with a water-cooled coil. Many different types of protected nozzles were tried, such as air jackets, water jackets and heat-resisting steel alloys, but none proved satisfactory. The angle of inclination of the feeder was found to be an important factor in spreading the charge evenly over the surface of the bath. An angle of 34" to 37" was found to be the most advantageous. To allow a continuous flow of ore from the charge car to the point of discharge inside the furnace, the feeder was made with telescopic connections. It is only in the past decade or so that industrial exploitation of biological resources and techniques has become regarded as a distinct discipline. Commonly referred to as Biotechnology, it embraces biochemistry, microbiology and the engineering sciences and is mainly aimed at the biological conversion of suitable raw materials into desired end products. The catalytic agents are more often than not bacteria although other micro-organisms such as fungi are used. The range of micro-organisms used is wide and the choice depends upon the desired end product, which in turn depends upon the metabolic attributes, genetically engineered or otherwise, of the cells. The metabolic diversity of micro-organisms has been applied to processes such as antibiotic production, food processing, brewing and chemical production, and of course extraction of metals from ores. Metabolic diversity is, to a certain extent, based on nutrition, which, in its simplest form, can be divided into energy source, carbon requirements and nature of the electron donor producing reducing power to the cells. The source of energy may be light, in which case the organisms are phototrophic (eg green plants, algae). The carbon requirements and reducing power may come from organic sources. These organisms are then called heterotrophic (eg man and most bacteria, including the well known Escherichia colt). However, there is a group of bacteria whose energy metabolism depends upon chemical redox reactions, use inorganic carbon (CO2) and obtain their reducing power from reduced chemicals such as metal sulphides. These are known as chemolithotrophs. They play an important role in mineral recycling in nature and are also ideal for extraction of metals from ores. This is because they are extremeophiles being acidophilic (grow at very low pH) and sometimes also thermophilic (grow at very high temperatures). These bacteria operate in such hostile environments that competition, or contamination, by other organisms does not occur. Extraction of metals from ores by chemolithotrophic bacteria is commonly referred to as biohydrometallurgy. Other related areas are bioadsorption of metals from dilute solution,- microbial treatment of metal contaminated wastes and removal of toxic chemicals produced or used during mineral processing. This paper basically reviews the work that Gencor has undertaken in the field of biohydrometallurgy and the advancements it has made in commercialising the technology, but also touches on certain long-term areas of research that are currently under investigation.

DURING and after 1949, various groups of British mining engineers came to the Dominion Coal Company, Limited, at Sydney, N .S., to see at first hand the Dosco MINER ( 1). These visits culminated in 1952 with the ordering of four Dosco Miners by the (British) National Coal Board on an experimental basis through their Experimental Expenditure Funds. Others are now on order. The first machine was delivered in February, 1953, and, after slight alterations to suit the different power supply, the machine was made ready to work. Due mainly to the size of the machine, new rules and regulations governing its operation had to be put into effect and it was not until April, 1954, that the machine was put underground. It started to produce in June of that year. The three others were delivered early in 1955. The authors were sent to England by the Dominion Coal Company to install and demonstrate these machines and to work with the Coal Board engineers to- further interest in the machines in the British coal fields .

An automated method of microscopy for determining the pyrite size distribution on two base coals that were crushed to 28 mesh x 0 has been developed. Polished epoxy-bound coal pellets were prepared and examined by a Zeiss IBAS image analyzer utilizing a program developed from provided software. Pyrite size distribution determination is considered a necessary first step in pyrite characterization that could lead to successful predictions, by microscopy, of a coal's theoretical pyritic sulfur removal. Our research efforts to date have indicated that the IBP-S can be a reliable instrument for determining pyrite size distribution in crushed coal. A program was also developed to convert pyrite size data to a weight basis for comparisons to the results from chemical analyses. The problems encountered in our research and their solutions will be presented in the discussion.

Analysis of the energy resources available in the United States confirms that coal will be needed to satisfy the future energy needs. The trends in the market place, particularly economic and political, suggest that the bulk of the coal will be consumed for generation of electricity. The utilization of coal to produce electricity will require technical solutions to the variable characteristics of coal and ash, development of methods to improve coal quality, and public acceptance of the cost of compliance with environmental standards.

The presence of gypsum in samples subjected to standard core analysis introduces serious errors in the measurement of water saturation and porosity. The magnitude of these errors, depending upon the type of analysis procedure used, has been evaluated experimentally and theoretically. Water-saturated pore volumes determined by vacuum distillation or retort procedures may be too high by as much as 48 per cent of the volume of gypsum present. The maximum error in this value determined by Dean-Stark extraction with toluene is 36 per cent of the gypsum volume. If pore space is measured by a Boyle's law type porosimeter the maximum erorr due to gypsum is 38 per cent of the original gypsum volume present. The conscientious core analyst may eliminate the errors caused by gypsum by either of two methods. He may apply suitable corrections for the water of crystallization removed from gypsum, or take special precautions to prevent dehydration of gypsum during core cleaning and alzalysis procedures. These alternatives are discussed and methods for obtaining reliable core analysis data are proposed. Gypsum (CaSO4 . 2H2O) occurs as a common mineral in many of the world's sedimentary basins. In addition to its presence as primary bedded evaporitic deposits, it is often found as secondary replacement zones and pore-fillings in host rocks. That it may cause false indications in porosity, both on neutron logs and in standard core analysis, has been generally recognized. False porosity interpretations from neutron logs result because the chemically bound water in gypsum attenuates neutrons as effectively as free water. Errors in core analysis result when gypsum is dehydrated prior to or during the analysis. Vacuum retort procedures used by many laboratories to determine fluid saturation and porosity effect a complete removal of water of crystallization from gypsum. The crystal water, distilled and collected with free water from the sample, is counted as water-sat11rated pore space. Dehydration of gypsum results in a decrease in volume occupied by calcium sulfate and a corresponding increase in pore volume. Thus, if gypsum is dehydrated by sample cleaning and drying procedures, subsequent porosity measurements with gas expansion or compression instruments will be high. The qualitative effect of gypsum on porosity determinations by retort procedures was discussed in a recent article by Bynum and Koepl3. They concluded that since false porosity was interpreted as being water saturated, determinations of oil content were not affected. Others in the industry, however, have pointed out that porosity values are often used with values of water saturation determined independently, e.g., from electric resistivity logs in making reserve estimates. Values of water saturation calculated from the formation resistivity using the Archie equation, S4= are actually low if values of are high due to gypsum. In this case, false porosity values due to gypsum could cause serious errors in calculations of oil-in-place. This investigation was made to determine quantitatively the effect of gypsum on porosity values determined by different core analysis procedures. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Dehydration of Gypsum The extent and rate of removal of water of crystallization from gypsum under conditions encountered in core analysis procedures were studied. Taken for the experiments were three types of relatively pure, naturally occurring gypsum, viz. selenite, satin spar and massive gypsum. Although all samples probably contained trace chemical impurities, each type lost the theoretical amount of water upon complete dehydration. An automatic recording thermobalance, similar to one described by Mauer2, was used to obtain dehydration rate data for samples heated in dry air. Water

Sampling drawpoints in block cave mines has been a contentious issue for many years. Doubts have been expressed as to the validity of the process used at most mines. This paper outlines the sampling practice commonly in use, discusses the resulting issues associated with reconciliation and drawpoint closure decisions. The paper also looks to the future and highlights issues for some block cave mining operations currently planned to have in the order of one thousand active drawpoints. It is likely that these operations will require a new approach to drawpoint sampling. There are several potential technologies currently available although some appear to be better suited than others to replace the current approaches. CITATION:Ross, I T, 2012. This report on the properties of aviation gasolines and aviation jet fuels produced in the United States during 1955 was made under a co-operative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. Analytical data are presented for 116 samples of aviation gasoline and for 38 samples of aviation jet fuel. The analyses were made on samples typical of the manufacturers' 1955 production in their laboratories and the results submitted to the Bureau of Mines for compilation. The products of 20 manufacturers of aviation gasolines and of 16 producers of aviation jet fuels are represented.

The object of this paper is to give to mining companies and to all others who are interested some idea of the possibilities in the treatment, by differential flotation, of lead-zinc ores of the Coeur d'Alene region and other districts. The purpose of these investiga.. tions is not to evolve a differential flotation process that would replace present methods of gravity concentration but rather one that could be applied to the relatively fine material and slime produced in the mills and treated unsuc_pessfully by gravity methods or by flotation. It is expected, of course, that the products to be obtained by differential flotation would be of much better grade than those now produced by flotation in the Coeur d'Alene mills. In view of the fact that it has been difficult to obtain representative samples of flotation feed from the mills, owing to the necessity of shipping the material wet and free from oil or other foreign matter that might be deleterious to the differential separation of the sulphides, the writers have felt justified in running flotation tests with the mill feeds in order to ascertain whether a differential separation of the sulphides could be effected. However, two different lots of flotation feed were tested for differential flotation, and the results of tests of one of these are given in this report. It is hoped that it will be possible later to test out the flotation feed for differential flotation on a large scale in some of the mills. This paper covers part of the investigations carried on by the United States Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Idaho Bureau of Mines, the University of Idaho, and certain mining companies of the Coeur d'Alene region. Although the results of the tests included in this report are not to be considered final, they indicate possibilities and may suggest others leading to a solution of the problem of separating lead and zinc sulphides by differential flotation in the treatment of certain ores.

This report presents the results of analytical studies made on two series of oil-shale samples from the Mahogany ledge of the Green River mine the character of the various grades of oil shale that are being mined and processed into shale oil and refined products at the Bureau of Mines Oil-Shale Demonstration Plant at Rifle, Colo. The analytical work was part of a synthetic liquid fuels program being conducted at the Petroleum and Oil-Shale Experiment Station, Laramie, Wyo. The 16 oil shales ranG6d in color from a gray brown ( or a sample that assayed 10.5 gallons of oil per ton to a very dark brown for a sample that assayed 75.0 gallons of oil per ton. In general, the samples were similar as to the types of organic and inorganic matter that they contained but varied widely in the amounts or these constituents. The principal constituents were calcite, dolomite, illite, and yellow organic material, while the minor constituents were quartz, feldspar and plagioclase feldspar, pyrite, marcasite, analcite, opal, black organic material, and small woody fragments. Some micro-fossils, spores and pollen grains were found also.

The object of this research was to investigate the technical feasibility of preparing chromium metal by the thermal decomposition of bisbenzene chromium. Bisbenzene chromium, a pi-bonded sandwich type organometallic compound, was thermally decomposed under reduced pressure to form a metal plate on a heated substrate. Metal recovery was close to 100 percent of theoretical, with deposition rates up to 20.8 mg/hr/cm2. Metal purity was dependent not only upon the purity of the starting material, but also upon the sublimation rate of bisbenzene chromium. Total detectable metallic impurities ranged from a low of 18 ppm to several hundred ppm. In general, metallic impurities were less than 100 ppm. Carbon, the major nonmetallic impurity, ranged from less than 0.3 percent to more than 10 percent. The carbon contamination is most likely a result of the decomposition of the organic portion of bisbenzene chromium. An unusual property of some of the deposits was their outstanding corrosion resistance. Unlike pure electrolytic chromium, which dissolves readily, these deposits were insoluble in hot mineral acids.

A new process of enrichment Cu in molten copper slag under electric field is presented in this article. The experiments were carried out in the laboratory on a kilogram scale. The mobility of copper slag was improved by the technique of carbon reduction. The effects of temperature, electric field strength and intermittent feeding speed were investigated on Cu migration. The results showed that the best experimental conditions were the temperature at 1523K, electric field strength was 1.5V•cm-1 and feeding rates was 15 g•(10min)-1. The copper content of the slag decreased below 0.6wt%. The process was compared to the traditional electric furnace process of slag cleaning, there was reduced the energy consumption and heat loss, and also harmful gas emissions such as SO2 and CO2, accompanied by improved the efficiency of slag cleaning.

The increasing use of hydrogen fluoride (annual consumption now exceeds 500,000 pounds (1)4/) directly and its occurrence as a byproduct of the utilization of fluorine compounds in the mineral industries, especially in metallurgical processes and in the refining of petroleum products, has aroused interest in its toxicity, and a brief review of the literature, with special reference to the hazard of poisoning in the mineral industries, seems to be opportune. Recently, residents in the vicinity of aluminum plants have been complaining of injury to livestock and vegetation as well as to their own health from the gases discharged into the air during operation of the plants, hydrofluoric acid gas apparently being the offender. The comparatively recent utilization of hydrofluoric acid in the alkylation process for the production of high-octane gasoline has raised the question of the hazard of poisoning in the petroleum Industry. In addition, the use of fluorine-containing refrigerants has extended the potential al exposure outside of industry (2).

"SynopsisGoing beyond transformation claims contained in employment equity scorecards and industry compliance reports, this article provides qualitative insight into the initiatives employed and challenges experienced by mining companies in a quest to transform the mining industry. Perceptions expressed during in-depth interviews with 10 senior executives showed that the assumption that mining companies are reluctant to transform is erroneous. Results from this study suggest buy-in and commitment to transformation. This article describes specific initiatives undertaken by mining companies to transform. The most notable initiatives include staff recruitment efforts to appoint historically disadvantaged South Africans (HDSAs), staff development initiatives, as well as community development. The findings furthermore contextualize the challenges experienced by industry participants in their quest to transform. Despite accusations that industry participants are not taking responsibility for the implementation of the transformation agenda, government needs to recognize that they too have a role to play and need to appreciate and assist in the current challenges experienced by the industry.IntroductionWe need a mining sector that works. Mining employs over half a million people. It is the biggest earner of foreign exchange in our country. It also contributes about 20 billion rand directly to tax revenue. Mining also makes a far larger contribution as a buyer of goods and services, and a supplier of inputs to other sectors of our economy and other economies around the globe’ said President Jacob Zuma during the 2014 State of the Nation Address (Zuma, 2014). However, despite apparent commitment from government, enforced compliance with social and labour plans, regulations and Mining Charter targets, the South African mining industry is slow to gain local and international investor trust (Deloitte & Touche, 2013; Mashego, 2013).Industry players acknowledge that their context has changed – creating various challenges (Davis, 2014). In the past few years, such challenges included subdued commodity prices, increased working costs, constrained infrastructure, and high labour costs, coupled with poor levels of productivity, strained labour-management relations, an uncertain regulatory environment, and the inevitable maturation of the industry (Deloitte & Touche, 2013; Davenport, 2014). Mining affected communities also became more cognisant of their rights, and politicians more vocal in their expectations from their relationships with the mining giants (Davis, 2014). One of the main issues that contributed to the difficult operating conditions was claims from organized labour and Minister Shabangu that this industry is too slow to transform. Specific claims were made in terms of employment equity, fair salaries and wages for mineworkers, housing and living conditions, health and safety issues, and general working conditions (Limpitlaw et al., 2005; Miningmx, 2013; Shabangu, 2010). These claims were followed by what Gill Marcus, Reserve Bank Governor, explained as ‘unprotected strike action [that] has escalated into an uncontrolled, violent and unlawful landscape, led by a mob mentality in the absence of formal and recognised leaders’ (Mavuso,2013)."

BENTONITE deposits are known to occur in Texas within the Jackson group of formations. This group represents the uppermost Eocene age sediments found in the coastal plain area of Texas. It outcrops across this area of the state in a narrow band of some 4 to 20 miles width. The outcrop pattern roughly parallels the present Gulf of Mexico shore line and is some 100 miles inland from the Texas shore, Fig 1. The principal bentonite deposits are found in the areas where this outcrop pattern cuts across the south-central Texas counties of Karnes, Gonzales, and Fayette. In these deposits, the better quality bentonite is found in the lower or bottom layers of the volcanic ash deposits in which they occur. Some of these better quality bentonites develop very light colors upon firing and therefore justify their being classified as "white firing." The deposits in Karnes and Gonzales Counties apparently occur in commercial quantity, whereas the white firing strata so far uncovered in Fayette County have been too thin to be classified as yet as "commercial." A study of the ceramic properties of the weathered ash in Gonzales and Karnes Counties was reported in 1941.1

"Wireless communication in the mineral processing environment is not as simple as it is in the home or office environment. The correct design of a wireless network in the mineral processing environment can offer a more flexible and lower cost installation than the transitional fiber networks. However with the flexibility of a wireless solution, also comes some limitations. By reviewing the plant requirements along with weighting the wireless benefits and limitations it is possible to design a network that combines the robustness of a wired solution with the mobility of a wireless solution. This paper addresses some wireless design considerations and it looks at some real life examples in the following areas: •,Meshed wireless network for high levels of redundancy •,Wireless instruments (such as HART, Modbus and others) •,Portable devices for mobile operators •,Network monitoring for plant personnel (it’s no longer just for IT people) INTRODUCTION Typical networks used in the mineral processing environment consist of a fiber network infrastructure with industrial switches used to connect the network devices. These fiber networks can be redundant or put into a ring topologies to offer a higher level of availability. Fiber networks have the benefits of: •,Immunity to noise from power and grounding issues •,Ability to span long distances (2km for multimode fiber and 20km for single mode fiber) •,Maintainable “off-the-shelf” technology Fiber networks however have some drawbacks, such as: •,Relativity high initial installation cost for cable trays, poles, trenches and pulling and termination of cable. •,Fixed geographic topology, adding future fiber drops may be challenging and expensive. •,Mobile users are not considered. Integrating a wireless network with a fiber network can offer the best of two worlds, a reliable high speed backbone for mission critical activities and a wireless network for remote applications and mobile users."

HERCULANEUM, MO., about thirty miles south of St. Louis on the Mississippi River, is the site of the lead smelter of the St. Joseph Lead Co. The lead concentrates come by rail from the Flat River district and from three properties in Madison County, Missouri; from the Balmat division in St. Lawrence County, New York; a small tonnage from the Tri-State district; and occasionally from the Aguilar property in Argentina. The average grade is 67 to 68 percent lead and 1 to 3 oz of silver. The bulk of the material is flotation concentrate, with some gravity or table concentrate. No secondary metals, outside drosses, or any materials high in bismuth, arsenic, or antimony are treated. All concentrate is received in box-caps and is unloaded directly from a trestle into the concentrate bins at the roaster plant. Flux, coke, and any miscellaneous lead-bearing material is either unloaded directly into bins or unloaded with a locomotive crane. All moving and switching of cars is done with two thirty-ton steam locomotives. Shipping facilities for the plant are provided by the Missouri-Illinois Railroad. Water for the plant and for fire protection is obtained from a dam built in a near-by creek. Drinking water both for plant and town is obtained from

Pneumatic transport systems play a vital role in conveying discrete particles over a sizable distance with minimal energy consumption. However if such a system is not designed keeping particle physics in mind, it leads to intractable problems which could possibly assume dangerous proportions, including but not limited to expensive redesign of the entire system. This paper describes a novel method, which harnesses the powerful technique of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to investigate a problem occurring in rotary kilns using coal as a major fuel source. In some of the sites, a unique phenomenon of abnormally high CO emission was observed and owing to the highly random nature of occurrence, it was difficult to scientifically investigate the problem and its cause. Most of the published solutions for the high CO problem tend to concentrate on the incomplete combustion aspect of the kiln and resolve the situation by increasing the air supply thereby improving the stoichiometric ratio of combustion. This paper offers an alternate correlation that relates high CO emissions to the phenomenon of coal delivery fluctuations caused by the sub-standard operation of the coal transport system. A CFD model for the coal delivery pipe is validated by utilizing the actual process data sourced from the measurements taken from a functioning plant. The results of the model are used to derive correlative conditions that point to the unstable operating conditions of the coal delivery pipe prevalent in the industry. The conclusions are summarized into a series of recommendations for optimized design of coal delivery systems which are implemented in a pilot plant. The results irrevocably prove a statistically significant reduction in CO emissions without resorting to increased air supply and power consumption. This paper reviews progress in equipment design and in the techniques applied to mine lighting in Great Britain. The incidence of the disease miner's nystagmus, which was a major source of concern only a few years ago, has now diminished, largely owing to improvements in standards of lighting in mines. The reorganisation of the coal mining industry, involving increasing mech-anisation, together with new safety legislation, has brought about the widespread use of mains electric lighting underground. An account is given of some of the results of research to determine the lighting conditions needed for compliance with the compulsory legal requirement of "sufficient and suitable" general lighting at specific localities in British mines. Some details are given of the techniques applied and the results of recent research in the problem of glare from miners' cap lamps. Of the various factors in the working environment of the miner, it is true to say that lighting is seldom given attention comparable with that devoted to other factors, such as dust, heat and humidity, or atmospheric gas content. No doubt one reason for this lies in the ability of the human eye to adapt itself to low brightness levels. Be that as it may, the fact is that at the turn of the 20th century the miner's working light improved little throughout the centuries during which mining technology has developed. Indeed, in coal mines which encounter a methane explosion hazard, flame safety lamps, with a luminous intensity less than one candle power, were virtually the sole means of lighting during almost the whole of the 19th century. The 20th century has witnessed a substantial improvement in lighting techniques underground in coal and metalliferous mining. In Great Britain the general pattern has been one of standards periodically raised by the implementation of Statutory Regulations imposed under successive hlines Acts, but it is fair to add that the more progressive mining companies usually anticipated the Statutory Regulations, which when they have been put into effect have served to turn into general practice what was already being done at the better mines. In earlier years, official requirements were limited to the specification of approved lamp designs, with stipulated minimum values of luminous intensity and light output, but more recently the necessity of satisfactory maintenance of standards during service has been recognized, and the current regulations not only require that a maintenance organisation should exist, but also specify a maximum permissible depreciation below initial approval standards.'

The flow of molten slag and matte and the estimation of the mass of settled matte in electric furnaces is discussed and the action of the electric furnace as a settler is considered. Particle size of the concentrate and its grade are major contributors to settler dimensions. Discussion on the production capacity of the electric furnace with reference to operating current, power input, furnace dimensions such as width and length and electrode diameter are given. These discussions are based on considerations derived mainly from experimentally determined properties of the slag such as its resistivity, viscosity and liquidus temperature. Extension of the design and operating considerations to circular furnace symmetry is also discussed.
