W. M. Williams (McGill University)-The authors are to be congratulated on completing this detailed investigation of recrystallization behavior. The present writer has recently completed some research at the University of Toronto on the recrystallization and grain growth behavior of a number of "pure" irons, and he would like to take issue with the authors' contention that recrystallization cannot be followed by means of hardness measurements. Two series of specimens of Ferrovac E, a com- mercially available iron, were annealed to complete recrystallization at 525" and 620" C, measurements being made both of Rockwell hardness and of volume percent recrystallized as a function of annealing time. Good correlation was found between these two quantities and, following the earlier practice of Cook and Richards for copper, hardness measurements were used in an extensive investigation of recrystallization. No anomalous behavior was observed as a result of this practice. Specimens which showed complete softening always showed, (metallographically and by X-rays), completely re-crystallized structures. The LaNi5-xMnx-hydrides have potential applications in cryocooling devices for non-mechanical method to compress hydrogen gas. Thermal aging behavior of LaNi5-xMnx-hydrides of compositions x=0.4 and x=1.5 has been investigated. The hydriding properties of the La1.02Ni4.6Mno.4 alloy do not change significantly after thermal aging at 453K for 260 hours. X-ray diffraction analyses of this aged alloy do not reveal the presence of any new phases but the Bragg peaks become broader. Line profile analyses show anisotropic microstrains with an average <e2>1/2 value of -5x103. Thermal aging of the other hydride, LaNi3.5Mn1.5 hydride, at 623K for 280 hours, showed significant disproportionation; the hydrogen capacity reduced significantly from an H/M value of 0.75 in the activated condition to -0.15 after aging. X-ray diffraction analyses showed disproportionated lanthanum dihydride, metallic Ni, and Mn phases. The Bragg peaks were very broad indicative of microstrains or small crystalline domains.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the technical problems involved in recovering commercial-grade vanadium products from alkaline solutions of low vanadium content. Conditions were defined for precipitating calcium vanadates from sodium vanadate solutions with calcium chloride and calcium hydroxide and for dissolving the precipitates with acid, sodium carbonate, and sodium bicarbonate to obtain vanadium-enriched solutions from which either red cake or ammonium metavanadate was recovered. Calcium vanadates with CaO:V205 mole ratios of 2, 3, and 4 were produced with recoveries of 93 to 100 percent. Optimum recovery of the low-lime variety of calcium vanadate was obtained by employing excess calcium chloride and adjusting the pH to a range of 8.0 to 8.5. High vanadium extractions were obtained in concentrated solutions by dissolving the calcium vanadate precipitates with any of the reagents tested. The resulting extracts contained 25 to 125 grams V205 per liter. Conventional procedures used to precipitate either red cake or ammonium metavanadate from the enriched solutions gave excellent vanadium recoveries.

The hydrodesulfurization characteristics of a Venezuelan topped crude oil and a Venezuelan reduced crude oil were determined at temperatures from 740° to 850° F, pressures from 800 to 1,600 psig, and space velocities from 1.0 to 2.0 Vo/Vc/hr. Kinetic calculations showed that under these conditions the desulfurization reaction was first order with respect to sulfur and had an average activation energy of 32.5 kcal/mo1. Catalyst life tests made at 750° F, with pressures of 800, 1,200, and 1,600 psig and space velocities of 1.0 and 1.25 Vo/Ve/hr, showed that the decrease in the relative activity of the catalyst was a logarithmic function of time or volume of oil processed and the amount of vanadium deposited on the catalyst. Comparative tests made with residual fuels prepared from a Wilmington, Calif., crude oil and a Wyoming asphaltic crude oil showed that catalyst life may be extended by processing fuel oil with a low metal content, but it may be shortened by the presence of large amounts of asphalt in the feed.

A fly ash sample from a power station in Guangdong province has been characterized by size separation, X-ray diffraction, contact angle measurements and X-ray Fluorescence. The ash sample had a loss-on-ignition (LOI) (%) of 15.54% and a large proportion of the unburned carbon was distributed in the +74 µm and -20 µm fractions. Contact angle measurements suggested that the removal of unburned carbon from the fly ash using flotation would present some challenges. The effects of various operating variables on the removal rate of unburned carbon (RUC) (%) and (LOI) (%) were determined using a cyclonic-static micro bubble flotation column (FCSMC). Within the range studied, the optimum diesel oil dosage was 1200 g/t, abies oil (frother) dosage was 600 g/t, pulp density was 20%, superficial gas velocity was 1.4 cm/s and circulating pressure was 0.20Mpa. Column flotation tests indicated that the FCSMC method a viable and effective separation process for removing the unburned carbon from the fly ash. Under the optimized conditions, a clean ash with 2.13% LOI and 94.21% RUC was obtained.

New compound classes previously unknown in flotation practice of non-sulphide ore beneficiation have been developed. The presented study results consider amine salts of alkyl sulphate and alkyl benzene sulphonic acid used as primary collectors, N-methyl amides of alkyl phosphoric acids - as auxiliary modifying collectors and pentaerythritole ethers of tall oil - as flotation accelerators. These reagents synthesized from accessible raw material are almost ready for commercial production. Efficiency of the new reagents for various non-sulphide ores has been demonstrated in a series of flotation tests.

A conventional Bucket Wheel Excavator (BWE) system with conveyor transport, mobile tripper and spreader was commissioned at the Goonyella Mine in 1982. The system was introduced to prestrip ahead of dragline excavations and was specified to remove 7.5 million cubic metres per annum in ground somewhat harder than that inwhich bucket wheel excavators are normally operated.This machine has, since 1982, moved more than 77 millionbank cubic metres of material and has been relocated twice. Construction of a secondary clarifier on the banks of Rainy River, Northern Minnesota, required the driving of H-piles 14HP102 to a sloping, very strong bedrock through thick deposits of soft and medium stiff soils. Pile toe protection, APF Hardbite HP 77750, was specified to prevent damage to the pile toe and to enable the pile toe to bite into the bedrock surface. The toe protection worked well for bedrock sloping less than 2H:1V. However, where the bedrock was steeper, the piles experienced damage and failed to reach bearing. In most cases, the also the replacement pile failed. Pile Driving Analyzer measurements showed that on encountering the bedrock, the pile toe reflection, which at first was sound, deteriorated indicating pile toe damage. Extraction for visual inspection showed that the failed piles were bent and had deformed pile shoes. In areas of steeply sloping bedrock and for replacement piles, an alternative shoe, the Scanpile Herkules rock shoe, was employed. This pile shoe proved to be able to secure the pile toe into the rock and to eliminate the problem. The costs of the Herkules rock shoe considering price, shipping, and attaching, were about equal with the Hardbite shoe.

A loch-grade copper-nickel deposit, with an estimated 4.6 Gt (5 billion st) and average analyses of 0.6% copper, 0.2% nickel, occurs in northeastern Minnesota. In addition to copper, nickel, cobalt, and precious metals, the Duluth gabbro contains magnetite, ilmenite, olivine, plagioclase, and biotite. It u estimated that flotation tailings that would be produced by a concentrator of optimal size to sustain a smelter would amount to 20 Mt/a (22 million stpy). The flotation tailings, having already been ground, warrant a closer examination for recovery and use of potential byproducts. Residual sulfide minerals and fibrous minerals may also be isolated and treated separately for useful purposes or for disposal in an environmentally acceptable manner. Two flowsheets were developed; one involving preconcentration by low- and high-intensity magnetic separation and another involving preconcentration by gravity concentration. Concentration methods for recovering and purifying individual byproduct minerals were investigated. From their chemical, physical, and mineralogical characteristics, the potential areas of application and marketabilities of each product fraction were surveyed.

Previously, two groups have conducted studies in order to define the influences of the intermediate principal stress. Mogi studied biaxial compression on prisms of Dunham dolomite and concluded that the intermediate principal stress should be taken into account. His study showed that failure strength increases with increasing [02], but less than the strength increase with increasing confining pressure. Handin, Heard, and Mogouirk&apos;s study on cylinders of Solenhofen limestone in torsion also found that the strength depends on the magnitude of [02]. More recent investigations by Mogi varying all three principal stresses independently and by Wawersik varying two of the principal stresses independently provide more detailed data confirming the effect of [02] on failure. All these tests were at low strain rates, and only the work of Wawersik reports measurement of all strains. The investigation here measures axial and transverse strains and included uniaxial and triaxial stress compression tests and biaxial stress tests using tubular samples (axial load and internal or external fluid pressure) at strain rates to 103/sec to provide the stress-strain response and to define the maximum stress or yield locus of Solenhofen limestone and Westerly granite.

We have developed new recycling technologies, based upon an eco-friendly biotechnology, in order to extract precious and rare metals sourced from end-of-life products and electronics. We have been focusing on the metal ion-reducing bacteria, Shewanella algae and Shewanella oneidensis, that are able to reduce and deposit gold ions (Au(III)) or PGMs ions (Pd(II), Pt(IV) and Rh(III)) into metal nanoparticles at room temperature within 120 min. When processing the aqua regia leachate of printed circuit boards, Shewanella bacteria were able to rapidly and selectively collect gold ions under acidic conditions in the presence of heavy metal ions, proposing a new bio-recovery system for gold. This biotechnological procedure also has the potential to allow the recovery of PGMs from the leachate of automotive catalysts. Shewanella bacteria were also able to successfully perform the complete reduction and deposition of the PGM ions. The ability to collect the PGM ions suggests that this represents a new process for the biorecovery of PGMs from used automotive catalysts. Our proposed biological method enables the rapid and highly efficient recovery of precious and rare metals via separation and concentration utilizing microbial reactions at room temperature.
