Experiments were carried out to determine the efficacy of bubble column flocculation. An acid-base neutralization method was used to determine the mixing time in a 0.064- by 1.5-m bubble column equipped with a Mottporous sparger. The mixing times decreased as the tracer injection point approached the gas sparger. Preliminary flocculation experiments on two clay samples were carried out. The effects of frother addition and airflow rate are presented and discussed.

THE Tennessee Coal, Iron & Railroad Co.'s ore mines began experimental tests with trackless mining units early in 1947. The units had many weaknesses to overcome, but are now well beyond the experimental stage and are becoming a necessity to ore seams that are amenable to this type of equipment. The development of this type of mining with the problems of increased underground supervision, maintenance, and training personnel, along with the benefits derived, are discussed.

The theory of electromagnetic fields indicates such fields could be used to detect and locate trapped miners. To be useful, the hardware of the system must meet a number of requirements, including small size, intrinsic safety, and rugged construction. Such hardware has been built, and the system has been tested by the Bureau of Mines and its contractors. These tests indicate that the electromagnetic method provides a practical means to locate miners in emergencies.

This report deals with the efforts to develop a portable device suitable for underground use for the purpose of measuring the frequency of vibration of the horizontal chords of Birmingham roof trusses. Four devices are investigated and evaluated. An approximate emperical expression developed from a mathematical analysis provides a means of converting the frequency into tension. The method appears to be effective in mines with shale roof but requires some modification for other roofs.

The US Bureau of Mines, in close cooperation with the mining industry, has recently established several improved face ventilation techniques for longwall mining systems. These include coursing the primary face intake from tailgate to headgate, installing curtains at the intake end of the longwall face, and identifying improved techniques for measuring face ventilation parameters on longwall sections. Applying these techniques throughout the mining industry should reduce the health hazard associated with excessive exposure to respirable dust.

This case study embodies the problems of an underground project under current contracting practices. It will provide a realistic framework for a structured examination of the anatomy of a major complex underground project. Just as it will illustrate the frustrations of the parties to an underground contract, it will also provide a means to examine potential opportunities to provide a better way to develop underground space. Urban Transit Authority (UTA) had planned to expand their heavy rail underground transit system through an extension to an existing line. UTA lacked sufficient funding to guarantee the construction and operation of this planned extension. Venture Partner Associates (VPA) in conjunction with four major department stores entered into an agreement to create a major underground space for a commercial/recreational facility. The concept was to locate the facility adjacent to a planned station and beneath existing aboveground office facilities. This group was known as Commercial Development Corporation (CDC). UTA had reached an agreement with UMTA to provide 20 percent of the line and station costs. UTA then entered into an agreement with CDC to provide the needed additional funding for the station work in return for locating the station adjacent to the planned underground commercial/recreational complex. The agreement called for CDC to contribute 20 percent to the station cost to a maximum of $25 million plus a one percent contribution from commercial/recreational revenues for operating costs.

A geologic, petrographic and geochemical study has been performed on the pyroclastic flow deposits in the coastal area of East Zhejiang Province, Southeast China. This study leads to classification of the pyroclastic flow deposits into three associations: the extrusive type, the surge type and the ash flow type welded tuff associations. Through detailed investigation and comparison of the characteristics of these lithologic associations, with emphasis on the welded tuffs, a comprehensive model has been proposed to demonstrate the petrogenesis of the pyroclastic flow deposits.

INTRODUCTION This paper report presents the general case history for the construction of the North Outfall Replacement Sewer (NORS) project. A 1982 City of Los Angeles Wastewater Facilities Plan recognized that a 19.3 km (12¬mile) section of the North Outfall Sewer (NOS), from Culver City to the Hyperion Treatment Plant, was deteriorating and had insufficient capacity. Built in the 1920s of unreinforced concrete and lined with vitreous clay tiles, the originally unventilated NOS suffered considerable corrosion by H2S gas. This caused roof tile and concrete to fall to the bottom of the pipe, which, over the years, reduced the 11.9 M3/S (420 cubic feet per second (cfs)) design capacity of the NOS to a current level of approximately 8.5 M3/S (300 cfs). This worsening condition, thereby contributing to the polluting of Santa Monica Bay. This situation culminated in the State of California Regional Water Quality Control Board, Los Angeles Region, issuing a Cease and Desist Order on January 27, 1986, which required the City of Los Angeles to eliminate such dry weather overflows through a number of prescribed actions. One of these was to construct the North Outfall Replacement Sewer (NORS) by April 1, 1993.
