MORE than thirty members of the Coal Division attended the Coal Land Valuations Round Table on Monday morning. Chairman Dilworth stated that the Committee had been appointed to take up the question and, after reading the list of members of the Committee, pointed out that the object of the meeting was to formulate a plan of action rather than to discuss any phases of valuation, per se. To this end he presented a tentative outline of points to be considered in the future by the Committee. After a lively discussion on the desirability of inclusion of some questions in the agenda of the Committee, the following outline was adopted :

The high elevation of China Western Mining Company (WMC)' s Ganhe refinery, and the high iron content of concentrates produced by the WMC mines, were key factors in the selection of pressure leaching by WMC for their new zinc refinery. This paper describes the results of pressure leaching test work conducted by Sherritt in Fort Saskatchewan with a sample of WMC concentrate from Qinghai Province in China. Results from batch pressure leach tests and a four-day pilot plant campaign are reported. The pilot plant campaign included continuous operation of a two-stage pressure leach circuit, as well as neutralization and iron removal steps, resulting in the production of iron-free zinc sulphate solution. Greater than 98% zinc extraction was achieved in pressure leaching, while producing solution containing about 9 g/L H2SO4 and 2 g/L Fe. Following neutralization and iron removal, the solution contained about 170 g/L Zn and less than 10 mg/L Fe. Overall recovery of sulphur in the zinc concentrate feed to elemental sulphur byproduct was about 85%, while 75 to 80% of the indium in the feed was recoverable from the neutralization residue. The test results highlighted the technical and economic advantages offered by the Sherritt Zinc Pressure Leach Process and provided the required data for the engineering design.

Direct Production Costs for Solar Sa 1t approximate the trucking cost for 160 Km. Operations near markets appear unusually attractive at first look. However, many desert operations have been plagued by dust storms yielding salt too high in insolubles for most uses. This paper relates the history of a successful operation in a dust storm area. Saturated brine from the solution mining of LPG storage caverns is evaporated in solar ponds yielding 99.95% sodium chloride (dry basis). Purchased energy is one-eighth that of vacuum pan operations. Production scale tests have proved it works at another desert location using a more complex brine. A new approach for refining soluble salts at ambient temperatures is demonstrated by bench scale and pilot work. Again, savings in purchased energy exceed 80%, even when temperatures are raised to reduce refining time.

Although phosphorus is a very important biogenic element, its concentration in coal is generally low. Phosphorus concentrations typically range from 0.001 % to 0.229% in raw coals of the contiguous 48 states. Some Alaskan coals in the Cook Inlet region contain horizons unusually high in phosphorus. A foot by foot analysis of deep drill core, containing 70 ft. of sub bituminous 'C' coal from the Beluga coal field, Alaska, showed certain increments contained as high as 17.03% P2O5 in the coal ash; 1.01 % P on a moisture-free coal basis. Crandallite has been identified by electron microprobe analyses as a phosphorus numeral in these coals. The authors could quantify calcium, barium, strontium and phosphorus concentrations from the coal attributable to crandallite. These high phosphorus coals provided a unique opportunity to study the association of phosphorus in coals using chemical fractionation for exchangeable cations and acid extractable elements. Since the source of high phosphorous horizons in Cook Inlet coals is attributed to volcanic ash, it is suggested that the profiles of acid extractable phosphorous concentration may be useful for coal seam correlations.

A method was developed by the Federal Bureau of Mines for evaluating viscosity data from slurries obtained in leaching sinters from the lime soda sinter process for extracting alumina from aluminous silicates. The logarithm of the viscosity was observed to be a linear function with time. The slope of the plotted line provides a means for evaluating viscosity behavior in a lime soda sinter blurry and also a means for comparing gelation characteristics directly with other variables in the lime soda sinter process. This report presents one aspect of a continuing study by the Bureau of Mines on methods for treating siliceous aluminum ores. It is one of the many programs of the Bureau concerned with conservation, development, and use of our domestic minerals resources. Previous investigations of lime soda processes, both by the Bureau4-7/ and industrial concerns, have demonstrated that sintered materials containing CaO, Na2O, A1203, and S102 in various combinations exhibit a tendency to gel or set when mixed with water or other extraction solutions. Gelling prevents satisfactory recovery of alumina and in extreme cases prevents operation of an extraction plant.

Chile is responsible for 30% of the global copper production; the world ́s largest. However, significant challenges are faced in this industry; declining grades (1.13% in 2002 to 0.61% in 2015), high cost of energy, scarcity of water, and environmental concerns. Mining trends suggest the future of the industry will be focused in the underground space, specifically due to the depletion of economically viable surface mineral deposits. For example, the largest block cave mineat Codelco ́s Chuquicamata mine is expected to reduce energy costs by 50% and dust emissions by 97%compared to the open cut mine. To access these underground deposits, critical infrastructure is required; horizontal tunnel developments, extraction levels, vertical raises, and ore passes with the on-time delivery of the highest quality outcomes being a requisite for successful project delivery (Lift 1 of 3 at Chuquicamata Underground has over 1000drawbells).One aspect that makes this scenario even more challenging for deeper underground operations is the increased risk profile (people, equipment, and geotechnical) that forms part of the general environment. Furthermore geotechnical risks should be considered and they include rock burst and windblast. The safe interaction with this environment must be sustainable throughout the full life of the project. This paper presents the Enaex group approach to addressing the blasting challenges and outlines the solutions created. Aspects such as rock mass damage occurrence as a function of blast vibration frequency content has been studied, as well as the development of blasting methodologies for guaranteeing the full 100% extraction of all infrastructure blasts, including the all-important draw bell volumes. The development of such infrastructure volumes in one single event using electronic detonators and the associated achievement of ambitious productivity goals, are described as a critical part of the successful construction of one of the most ambitious UG projects currently present on the world.

As the global demand for copper and gold steadily increases and the need for environmentally sound processing also grows, successful hydrometallurgical treatment of enargite (Cu3AsS4) concentrates has come to the forefront. This type of concentrate contains considerable arsenic so that successful arsenic fixation, for example as scorodite, is of the essence. This paper outlines the successful application of low temperature and low pressure nitrogen species catalyzed (NSC) hydrometallurgical pressure oxidation of enargite concentrates. The successful stabilization of the arsenic as an iron arsenate compound is discussed. Also, the use of experimental design software is highlighted as a process application and optimization tool.

This report describes the performance of 17 selected water-injection projects producing from Pennsylvanian-and Permian-age reservoirs. Illustrations depict reservoir structure and thickness, and production and injection history. A selected bibliography of publications pertaining to area oil recovery and geology is included. Tabulations of field and reservoir data reveal marked differences in the projects. Increased oil recovery resulted from injecting water in most cases; however, seven projects recovered less oil than the operators anticipated. Oil recovery by water injection ranged from 0.2 to 262 bbl per acre ft, or 0.1 to 22.5 pct of the initial stock-tank oil in place. Major reasons suggested for poor performance include: (1) Adverse directional horizontal permeability, (2) channeling of injected water through fractures or zones of high permeability, and (3) lack of containment of injected water. One 330-foot-deep project is among the first successful shallow water-floods in north Texas. Another project is the first successful Canyon sand-stone waterflood reported in the area. Previous gas injection in two Cisco sandstone projects did not prevent the reservoirs from responding favorably to waterflooding.

"The results of preliminary work on the modeling and measurement of the heat transfer coefficients of metal/mold interfaces is reported. The system investigated is the casting of uranium in graphite molds. The motivation for the work is primarily to improve the accuracy of process modeling of prototype mold designs at the Los Alamos Foundry. The evolution in design of a suitable mold for unidirectional solidification is described, illustrating the value of simulating mold designs prior to use. Experiment indicated a heat transfer coefficient of 2 kW/m /K both with and without superheat. It was possible to distinguish between solidification due to the mold and that due to radiative heat loss. This permitted an experimental estimate of the emissivity, ~ = 0.2, of the solidified metal.IntroductionA feature that distinguishes casting processes from welding processes is the presence of an interface with a low heat transfer coefficient between the mold and the casting. Especially when chill casting, the interface delays the start of solidification and increases freezing times significantly. By comparison welds can be assumed to have a very high heat transfer coefficient. The heat transfer coefficient controls such phenomena as folds and laps on the surface of castings which can be crucial to the acceptability of a casting. The time delay for the start of solidification influences the occurrence of cold shut defects. The standard mold material for uranium casting is high quality graphite which is an excellent refractory when used in vacuum and coated with a refractory wash. Graphite is an effective chill material and has a thermal diffusivity approximately twice that of uranium. Experience has shown that practicable superheat without mold pre-heat is not sufficient for avoiding cold shut defects when casting in graphite molds.TheoryIt is possible to calculate the position of the freeze front s, as a function of time, t, the superheat and interface heat transfer coefficient, h, [1]. However, the value of h cannot be obtained explicitly. The Virtual Adjunct Method (VAM) [2] offers a method for extending the standard equation for an insulating mold where s is proportional to the square root of time. ATHOUGH turquoise mining was, so far as we know, the first large, well-organized mining operation,' gem mining, from the Roman con-quest of Egypt until the opening of the South African pipe diamond mines some 50 years ago, was largely carried on' by individuals 01' small companies in a relatively primitive way. Now" however" gem mining does not yield in efficiency or in scale of operations to the mining of other mineral products. In 1926 the diamond mines of the world milled some 9,000,000 cu. yd. and produced 0,43 cu. yd. diamonds, a remarkable example of concentration. The Premier Diamond Mining Co. up to Oct. 31, 1927, had milled 116,455,550 loads (each of 16 cu. ft.) from which 26,-217,144 carats of diamonds" worth £29,897,971 2s, 9d., were recovered. The Burma Ruby Mines, Ltd., operating sever-al alluvial mines in Burma in 1911-12, mined and milled 1,479,845 truckloads of gemmiferous earth for 15c. per load. We of the industry can there-fore, with good grace, disclose some of the myths and also describe some of the primitive mining methods of the, dark ages of our industry. The methods, so far as I know, were not patented, and if they were, the patents have expired, so that engineers in other branches of the art are free to use them if they see fit.

This Bureau of Mines report presents a review of underground testing, test results, and design guidelines of steel-fiber-reinforced concrete (SFC) mine support (cribbing) developed at the Spokane Research Center. The objective of the work was to verify, in field applications, the performance, economics, and acceptance by the mining industry of the SFC supports and establish design guidelines for their use underground. Results indicate superior performance, favorable economics, and enthusiastic acceptance by the mining industry.

There are significant Mineral Resource and Reserve reporting challenges facing a mining company operating in the global arena. This paper specifically examines the Mineral Resource and Reserve reporting challenge facing BHP Billiton. The changing regulatory environment creates a significant challenge for global mining companies when reporting Mineral Resources and Reserves. The development and implementation of internal policies and standards for collecting and collating resource and reserve information is required for corporate governance, however the challenge is then to report this information publicly in such a way as to comply with the various codes and requirements in the many jurisdictions in which the company is required to report. The move to an International Code is not only desirable but is an essential requirement in todayÆs global market. The agreement to report using a single code internationally is however only the first step. A truly practical international reporting system must have common definitions and guidelines for interpretation as well as an international approach to the definition of a Competent Person, and even more importantly a common acceptance of that code by the relevant investment regulatory bodies. Without the universal acceptance of the concept of an international reporting code by the major regulatory bodies, implementation of such a code will be limited. With the major global mining companies seeking to raise capital in the USA, the worldÆs largest capital market, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and its approach to reserve reporting is becoming increasingly important. The development and implementation of an International Code must gain the support and acceptance of the SEC if it is to be successful.

The Penetrating Cone Fracture (PCF) technology 1 is a new method of rock excavation developed by Sunburst Excavation, Inc. of Denver, Colorado. PCF is a rock excavation method which employs tensile breakage mechanisms under controlled conditions to enable the continuous excavation of rock?in underground and some surface applications. The technology has developed rapidly over the last two years to the point where it is now being prepared for commercial application in the mining and civil construction industries. The initial commercial application of PCF will be undertaken at the Perseverance Nickel Mine of Western Mining Corporation Limited in Western Australia beginning in May, 1994.

IN response to many urgent requests for a concrete realization of a series of standard temperatures that would be available to any one anywhere for the standardization of pyrometers and the reproduction of the standard scale of temperature for use in laboratories and industrial works, the Bureau, in 1916, made arrangements with several manufacturers to prepare a series of- pure metals that could best serve this purpose. After the necessary preliminary work of chemical analysis, as a check on the purity, together with exact determinations of melting or freezing points, the Bureau began, in 1917, the issuing of melting -point standards of tin, zinc, aluminum, and copper. At the outset, it was decided to secure metals of the highest purity and of American manufacture, and this was accomplished in a more satisfactory manner than anticipated. In the preparation of these temperature standards, the Bureau has had the hearty cooperation of several American companies, which have succeeded in producing metals highly satisfactory for the purpose and of as high a state of purity as could have been obtained anywhere. Each company that undertook the responsibility of furnishing a metal for this series of standards exercised most painstaking care to produce the best possible product as to purity and uniformity. A representative of the Bureau witnessed the actual preparation of each metal. The 300 and 400-lb. (136 and 181-kg.) samples making up the first series were all used up, with the exception of the aluminum, early in 1919. The Bureau has taken steps to replenish its stocks of metals serving as pyrometric standards and to the list has been added lead. The copper and lead are being ordered this time in 1-ton lots and the zinc and tin in 300-lb. (136 kg.) lots as before. The wide dissemination of these samples will be appreciated when it is noted that the metals are distributed by the Bureau inn quantities of 50 cu. cm. each, at $2 a sample and accompanied by a certificate which gives the melting point as determined by samples from the same lot. The manufacture and detailed description of chemical analyses, physical measurements, and precautions in use of these pyrometric standards, are described in detail in the Bureau Circulcar No., 66.

? THE man is always greater than his work.? The training of the men who are to develop the mineral resources of the world is the most important problem connected with mining engineering. It becomes ever more important to civilization as the mineral wealth of the earth approaches exhaustion. I have therefore decided to consider a few of the more important problems arising in the training of the mining engineer, and especially those arising in America. THE PECULIAR NATURE OF MINERAL WEALTH. Mining and Agriculture are the two fundamental arts. Without the latter our existence would be precarious; without the former, our civilization impossible. Agriculture furnishes that regular supply of food and raiment which leads to the growth of large communities in which cultivated leisure first becomes possible; while raining furnishes the metallic thread from which is woven that complex fabric we call civilization. But in these two arts the conditions for success are widely different. Most of the crops that the farmer reaps may be harvested year after year, and the proper fertilizers being added, he may continue the annual harvest indefinitely, while, as a result of cultivation, his farm becomes yearly more valuable. But the crop the miner reaps can be harvested but once in the history of the race. Our mineral wealth has taken unknown ages to mature in the bosom of the earth. MEXICO embraces one of the great metal and petroleum producing provinces of the world. In this respect its history dates back to the overthrow of the Aztec empire by a Spanish force under Hernando Cortes between 1519 and 1.521. Even before then, its richness in silver and other minerals was not unknown. But it was a treasure house for the Spanish conquerors until the country became independent in 1821. It has been computed that in the 400 years following 1521, Mexico yielded 1.55,000 metric tons of silver, worth $3,000,000,000, two-thirds of the entire world production. In 1935 the country accounted for 36 per cent of the world's silver output, 14 per cent of its antimony (in 1934), 13 per cent of its lead, 3 per cent of its zinc and copper, and 21/2 per cent of its petroleum. Contrary to the impression of some, its gold output is now comparatively small, though important in the past. Its oil, as well, formerly hulked much larger than now, in 1921 being one-fourth of the world output.

An intelligent control system (ICS) is being developed for ferrous iron oxidation by Thiobacillus ferroxitdans. The ICS provides computerized data acquisition and' control of process variables (temperature, Eh, pH, dissolved oxygen arid carbon dioxide concentrations and dilution rate) to maintain the ferrous iron oxidation at the highest possible rate. The ICS uses fuzzy logic for analysis of data inputs and implementation of control strategies. T:his paper provides preliminary information on the development of the ICS and? its operation.

This report describes pilot-plant studies and an economic evaluation of a process developed by the Federal Bureau of Mines, Albany Metallurgy Research Center, to produce synthetic rutile from a rock-type ilmenite concentrate. In this process, ilmenite blended with coke and lime is smelted in an electric arc furnace to separate most of the iron as salable pig iron and to form a titania-enriched slag of low iron content, which is treated with oxygen and titanium pyrophosphate. The titanium oxides are converted to crystalline rutile; the phosphate glass contains most of the associated impurities. The treated slag is ground and leached with sulfuric acid to liberate rutile crystals, which are concentrated by physical methods. In pilot testing conducted to obtain data for a cost estimation, a synthesized product containing about 88 wt-pct TiO2 and less than 2 pct FeO was extracted from a rock-type ilmenite concentrate containing about 45 wt-pct TiO2. The estimated fixed capital cost (on a mid-1975 basis) of a plant producing 500 tpd of synthetic rutile is $28,290,100. Based on 330 operating days per year, the estimated operating cost for this process is $351 per ton of synthetic rutile. The estimated selling price of synthetic rutile made from rock-type ilmenite is $344 per ton, based on a credit of $160 per ton of pig iron and a 20 pct interest rate of return on investment after taxes.

In recent years, Chinese companies have invested billions in Australian mineral exploration, development and processing. In 2008 - 2009 alone, the Foreign Investment Review Board approved $26.4 B of investment. Much of this investment has been by merger and acquisition (M&A) of Australian resources companies. This paper sets out to investigate how Australian CEOs perceive the cultural and institutional challenges in operating Australia mining companies recently acquired by Chinese interests. HofstedeÆs cultural dimensions and institutional theory from management science were used to develop a structured questionnaire, which was subsequently used to conduct telephone interview of the CEOs of six recently acquired mining companies. Analysis of the survey results indicated that, in all cases, few changes were made to the operational management of the Australian companies post-M&A. The three major benefits for Australian companies as a result of the M&A are the ability to; access long-term debt at lower cost; secure finance for growth plans in financially volatile times; and maintain existing management structures. Some perceived negatives involved longer and more convoluted decision-making as a result of Chinese state approval required for investment decisions. The study identified building æGuanxiÆ and an aversion to losing æfaceÆ as important cultural learnings for Australian CEOs.
