"In a study of the chemistry and pathology of chronic benzene poisoning, which was conducted cooperatively by the United. States Bureau of Mines, the Barrett Co., and the producers of benzene, it was necessary to make quantitative determinatious of the abzorption, distribution, and: fate of benzene in the organism. Although methods for determining benzene in relatively large amounts were available no satisfactory method was found for removing and determining the small amounts that are present in the tissues or excretions after exposure to conditions which ultimately cause chronic poisoning. This no doubt accounts for the lack of information in the literature on this particular phase of benzene poisoning.The writers have found in work that will be described in a subsequent publication that the amounts of benzene present in the tissues and excretions under conditions of exposure which produce chronic benzene poisoning arc of the order of a fraction to a few milligrams per 100 grams of tissue. This report describes a method developed and found satisfactory for these determina¬tions.RÉSUMÉ OF PERVIOUS METHODSA method for the determination of benzene in tissue was developed by Joachimoglu. 5 In the Joachimoglu procedure the ground organs are mixed with water and acidified with diluted sulphuzic acid, and the benzene is distilled into a receiver containing carbon tetrachloride. The benzene is nitrated in the carbon tetrachloride, the carbon tetrachloride evaporated, the acid mix¬ture neutralized, and the dinitrobenzene extracted with ether. After removal of the ether the dinitrobeuzene is determined gravimetrically. Joachimoglu reports that this method is about 55 to 60 percent quantitative."

Whether you are an employee, contractor or consultant working in the mineral industry, there are pressures to deliver the best possible performance. Technical professionals are usually driven by an internal desire to perform to a high standard because of personal pride in their profession, but there are an increasing number of external requirements to demonstrate that the actions taken were based upon reasonable grounds and that the work conformed to current best practice. People expect these best practice procedures to be followed and governments are now requiring those tendering for contracts to be registered in some way and to be participants in quality assurance schemes. One is not immune to these pressures just because you are working in a less legislatively sophisticated developing country in the circum-Pacific rim (Pacrim) region.

There?s no denying that mining is a male-dominated industry. Yet thanks to technologies developed over the last 20 years, societal changes in sex role stereotyping, individual determi­nation, and the willingness of companies to train women, there are no jobs in mining today where women are not represented. Women are drillers and electricians as well as drivers of heavy equipment and haulpack trucks. They perform jobs ranging from field exploration and metallurgy to clerical and janitorial and warehousing positions, from prospectors and underground blasters to geologists and land reclamation experts, from communicators to legal experts on mining law and more. The Women?s Mining Coalition, founded in 1994 to shepherd responsible legislative mining reform, estimates that 20 percent of the workers in the mining industry are women. Although women are concentrated in clerical and adminis­trative jobs, at least 10 percent are in non-traditional, hardhat jobs, claims the group. There are women in management, but the numbers in senior management remain small, especially in larger companies.

"Design for reconstruction of the East Flagstaff traffic interchange project located in Flagstaff, Arizona posed particular challenges. The proposed design included construction of a nearly 50-foot tall mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) wall given rightof- way constraints and soft subgrade soils. The tight right-of-way, approximately 15 feet in certain locations, adjacent to existing structures limited the number of viable remedial alternatives to provide grade separation at the proposed bridge abutment without significant settlement. Preliminary analyses indicated the existing subgrade soils - consisting primarily of relatively soft silts and clays with decomposed pumice - would settle approximately 12 to 14 inches resulting in unacceptable wall deformation. Stone columns placed via vibratory methods (vibro-replacement) consisting of circular excavations which penetrate to firm bearing soils and which are filled with crushed stone were selected to densify the existing subgrade soils. The implemented mitigation measures helped limit settlement to less than one inch and allow for successful construction of the project. The project history - including site constraints, subsurface conditions, evaluation of remedial alternatives, stone columns methodology, and effectiveness of ground improvements - will be discussed.IntroductionThis paper describes the subsurface investigation performed for the reconstruction of the Business Route 40 (B-40) (Country Club Drive) and United States (US) 89 Traffic Interchange (TI) located within the city limits of Flagstaff, Arizona. This project is currently referred to as the East Flagstaff TI. The Project Site Vicinity Map is shown below.The former B-40/US 89 TI was considered ineffective in handling the current and projected volumes of traffic which transition from northbound (NB) B-40 to US 89 (both directions), as well as from southbound (SB) US 89 to SB B-40. The intent of the project was to reconstruct the TI to better accommodate projected traffic volumes. The project eliminated the existing ramps from both NB B-40 to SB and NB US 89. The new interchange includes a Tee intersection from B-40 to US 89. In order to accommodate this alignment, the profile of US 89 was raised several feet (on nearly the same as existing horizontal alignment) to match the elevated profile of B-40. B-40 was shifted just west of its current alignment to accommodate construction of a new, wider bridge structure which spans over Industrial Drive, the Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) railway, and old Route 66. South of the new bridge, B-40 transitioned back to the existing alignment just north of the I-40/B-40 TI. Within the project limits, both US 89 and B-40 were widened to three travel lanes in each direction."

Blaster training manuals used by the Office of Surface Mining (OSM) and others are outdated and cumbersome. A new approach has been developed using Microsoft PowerPoint with a Visual Basic overlay to produce modules on CD’s that present state of the art blasting techniques. The education modules contain enhanced information on topics such as explosives and initiation products, blast design, drilling, and vibration control. The content is based on safe practices and illustrated with numerous photographs and movies. Review questions, complete with explanations for incomplete answers, enhance the learning process and keep the blaster involved. The benefits of using an electronic format include the ability to continually change and update the training modules as new products, technology and applications become available. In addition, the blaster can work at home in preparation for class work and may reduce the time away from the job. This poster session presentation will allow potential users to view and take part in the evaluation of these modules.

"Abstract — Systematic characterization of the mineralogy of massive sulfide ore deposits can provide valuable insights into ore genesis and metallurgical processing that would not be apparent otherwise. We describe a method wherein (1) normative mineral abundances are calculated from whole-rock chemical assays using an algorithm, (2) the results are cast in block models, (3) the results are then verified with automated image analysis of a subset of samples prepared as grain mounts by backscattered electron imaging and X-ray mapping on a scanning electron microscope, and (4) those verified results are integrated with textural data determined by optical microscopy.The technique is applied to the magmatic Ni-Cu-Co sulfides of the Ovoid orebody, based on geochemical assays of 3175 whole-rock samples. Three principal ore zones are defined in the Ovoid. Type I ore occurs in the center of the deposit; it is magnetite-rich and pyrrhotite-poor with intermediate contents of pentlandite and chalcopyrite. Type II ore surrounds Type I ore and is pentlanditechalcopyrite- rich with intermediate contents of pyrrhotite and magnetite. Type III ore occurs at the base and along the outer periphery of the northern part of the orebody; it is pyrrhotite-rich and chalcopyrite- poor with an intermediate content of pentlandite, and a low-to-intermediate content of magnetite."

The existing construction and demolition (C and D) waste recycling technologies and standards have been essentially focused on the production and use of coarse recycled aggregates. Very few papers focus on the production of recycled sand, although some previous results show that fine aggregates fraction represents around 40 to 60% (in mass) of the Brazilian waste and it is usually used as road sub-base or disposed in landfills. The quality of the recycled aggregate is strictly related to the content of porous and low strength phases, mainly the patches of cement remaining on recycled aggregate surface. Some technologies have already been described in the literature, even though, to the moment none of these technologies has clearly succeeded in reaching the large market available. This paper presents a summary of the main properties of the sand produced from C and D waste by tertiary crushing at vertical shaft impact crusher (VSI). Additionally mineral processing technologies were applied on the attained product, such as gravity concentration by shaking table and spirals and removal of cement paste by attrition. The main properties of recycled sand are discussed and compared to the previous C and D waste, respectively: particle size distribution, particle shape, chemical composition, cement paste content and porosity. The results demonstrates that the crushing allowed producing a VSI-sand with low porosity and water absorption due to the increasing on the content of silicates from natural rock phases and increasing liberation between these phases and porous cement paste; the particles from the attained product presented also a better shape (sphericity and aspect ratio). The attrition tests assayed on VSI recycled fine aggregates accomplished a further selective disaggregation of cement paste and other porous materials - the porosity was reduced from 10% to 7%. The concentration by shaking table at narrow sieve fractions led to a product with low porosity and reduced content of cement paste, however, concentration on spirals did not succeed since separation was performed essentially by the size of the particles. The heavy product from shaking table represented almost 75% in weight and has less than 60% recovery of CaO+LOI, and expressive reduction on porosity. The aim of producing sand from construction and demolition waste through mineral processing unit operations changes the recycling approach and contributes for up cycling the recycled sand. The exhaustion of sand deposits on Brazilian large centers, the increasing price and the construction boom encourages the development of alternative materials as construction raw material. A reduction roasting/magnetic separation/flotation process for beneficiating oxidized taconite from the western Mesabi iron range in Minnesota was evaluated in a Bureau of Mines research program to insure an adequate supply of raw materials for future ironmaking and steelmaking needs. The research was performed on a sample containing 35.4 pct iron and representing a deposit of approximately 2 billion tons of raw materials. An average of 1,419 lb of oxidized taconite and 37 lb of lignite reluctant per hour were fed to a 35 -foot rotary kiln in which the iron oxides were converted to artificial magnetite. The kiln was heated with pulverized lignite and natural gas. Most of the dust collected from the kiln exhaust gas was pelletized and recycled to the kiln. Magnetic separation and cationic flotation of the roasted material in a 900-lb/hr pilot plant produced a concentrate analyzing 67.9 pct iron and 4.9 pct silica and containing 69.2 pct of the iron in the kiln feed.

The PAL process for recovering nickel from laterite ore requires large volumes of thick abrasive slurry to be raised lo high temperature (245°C+) and pressure (40 atm.+). Flow diagrams of the process typically result in facilities that have serious operating and reliability problems. Most of the problems can be attributed to using multiple pump stations to raise the slurry to autoclave pressure, large amounts of flash and live injection steam to heat the slurry to autoclave temperature and several steps of flash cooling to lower the temperature and pressure of the abrasive autoclave slurry down to atmospheric conditions. It is proposed that operating and reliability problems of PAL facilities can be mitigated by using Tube-in-tube heat exchangers and "float type" positive displacement pumps. An electrowinning pilot plant has been constructed at Falconbridge Nikkelverk A/S, Kristiansand, Norway. The equipment consists of a mixing tank where the electrolyte composition and temperature are controlled, an electrowinning tank equipped with five cathodes and six anodes of commercial size and design and a dechlorination facility. Electrowinning experiments were carried out in this pilot plant using acid cobalt chloride solution from the cobalt tankhouse. Key parameters were varied to obtain an improved understanding of the cobalt electrowinning process, focusing on the detrimental deposition of cobalt oxide on dimensionally stable anodes. The extent of anode scaling was found to be dependent on the electrowinning conditions. Low pH, temperature and cobalt concentration resulted in less scale being formed, however at the expense of cobalt current efficiency and cell voltage, adversely affecting electrowinning production capacity and energy consumption. When operating at high acidity, pH in the anolyte was higher than in the catholyte, which is believed to be due to H+ ions taking part in the current transport across the diaphragm, migrating out of the bags surrounding each anode.

This paper critically reviews the role of institutional research contractors (eg universities and the CSIRO) in the delivery of effective research, development and demonstration outcomes in mineral and coal processing to the Australian mineral industry. The criteria by which such R&D is justified, and the problems of quantifying the benefits of such research, are considered. Third-party funding mechanisms such as NERDDP and AMIRA are reviewed in the context of the difficulty of setting national research priorities. Some case studies are presented which illustrate both the problems and the advantages of institutional research for industry. The transfer of research outcomes to industry is identified as a significant problem which limits the effectiveness of all institutional research. Other topics reviewed include research management, the relationship between industrial companies and their research contractors, and the real costs of research. The paper offers suggestions for the ingredients needed for a successful industry-institution relationship, based on the Australian experience. It is concluded that the Australian model for this relationship is a very effective one, although there is still room for improvement.

Color enhances expression and communication in all physical objects experienced in life. Pigments provide color and in some applications have a specific additional function. Natural iron oxides are widely distributed throughout the world but only a few deposits are sufficiently pure and possess acceptable color and brightness properties to merit their processing into pigment form. Ochre, the common name for goethite ore, is the best and most under used material in the buff colored pigment market. The geological occurrence of ochre in the basal Shady Formation of the Cartersville Mining District (Georgia) is described. Exploration, processing, and product applications of New Riverside Ochre Company, Inc. are discussed. An overview of the worldwide pigment market is presented with emphasis placed upon the North American activity in iron oxide production and application. The purpose of this paper is to increase the awareness of ochre and its potential market in the colored iron oxide pigment industry, encourage research on the origin of ochre deposits, and stimulate interest in new applications of this unique substance.

The year 1937 was signalized by increased employment in the metal-and nonmetal-mining 4 industry of the United States. Measured by the number of men working, there was a 17-percent gain in employment compared with 1936. In total number of man-hours worked at all mines, the gain was slightly over 18 percent. Hazards connected with mining resulted in more accidents to the workers than in 1936, but the increase in number of accidents caused only a slight rise in the accident rate because of the much larger increase in the number of man-hours worked. In fact, the fatality rate per million man-hours of exposure was lower in 1937 than in 1936, but the rate for nonfatal injuries increased slightly.

Some months before taking up work on black powder the Survey had resumed work on an interrupted investigation of explosions in coal-mines, a subject which is engaging the attention. of numerous investigators. An unusual number of serious disasters has directed to. the subject a study which discloses the disquieting fact that, in the. United States, the ratio of lives lost per ton of coal mined has been on the increase. Methods of coal-mining have changed to some extent with the great increase of output, attained in, comparatively recent years. These changes involve the working of very extensive mines, with increased difficulty of ventilation, increased accumulation of coal-dust, and. a very great increase in the amount of explosive used.. . This last point assumes truly startling proportions when it is carefully observed. In the fields of the Middle. West it is not now uncommon for a miner to use six ,kegs (150 lb.) of black powder in a "pay" of two weeks, while within the memory. of men still active, one keg (25 .lb.) would last two men for a " pay." So. great has . the use of explosives become in some fields that the skilled coal-miner is hard to find, and the coal is not mined, but blasted. About 1973 the abrupt decrease in crude oil shipments due to political action by Middle Eastern suppliers, caused a shortage and a steep price rise. In response, Canada had to develop strategies of diminishing consumption and increasing production in both traditional and environmentally friendly resources. To clarify the situation in Canada, there are brief histories of energy (discovery, pipelines), manufacturing and science development, 1800-1970. Energy strategies, both nationally and in Quebec, succeeded in curbing consumption and in expanding production while fostering research in renewable sources. The industry-sector committees provided free exchange of conservation techniques through the federal energy ministry, with progress reports issued annually. Pipeline history in North America is reviewed along with manufacture and construction plans in Canada. Considerable success in all the aspects provided long lasting benefits, but after the embargo was lifted, many research initiatives were gradually abandoned for political reasons. Sustainability is the goal; society must conduct conserver analysis, legislation and action to enhance it.

The filtration of phosphogypsum is a ubiquitous step in the manufacturing of phosphoric acid. It is highly desired to achieve the minimum concentration of P2O5 in the phosphogypsum cake. This work is aimed at addressing P2O5 losses in phosphogypsum (PG) along with the recovery of P2O5 from slurry by using constant pressure filtration at 1 bar pressure. Laboratory tests were carried out in the phosphoric acid production plant situated in Paradeep, India. Recycled water source near acid plant (i.e., pond water) was used for cake washing to reduce the burden on fresh water stock. The findings indicated that pressure filtration offered the most effective P2O5 recovery (nearly 93.48%). The moisture was reduced to 14–16%, and watersoluble P2O5 in the gypsum cake was found to be negligible. A narrow particle size distribution was observed, which offered effective filterability with average cake resistance of 2.38 × 1010 m/kg, indicating a moderately separable cake.

Fatigue failure and accompanying brittle failure occurs frequently in heavy mining equipment. This paper discusses how fracture mechanics can be applied as a tool for crack control and crack management. Information is provided to determine if particular components are prone to brittle failure. By using existing fracture mechanics formulae, an estimation of the critical crack size can then be made. It is explained that for a successful application of fracture mechanics, both the actual engineering stress in the component and the mechanical properties of the applied material must be known. The importance of toughness at low temperatures is quantitatively illustrated by calculating critical crack sizes at room temperature and at below-zero temperatures. Understanding the possibilities of fracture mechanics will also produce a climate in which the purchaser of equipment can more precisely analyze the relative quality of components with respect to crack tolerance and failure prevention. In this manner, communication between the user and manufacturer of equipment may also become more precise and effective, leading to improved design.

Loading and hauling of ore and waste are the key operations of an opencast coal mine and entail a high operational cost. The productivity of a mine can be increased by reducing the cycle time of loading equipment as well as utilizing dumpers optimally. In this paper we discuss the impact of rock type, bucket fill factor, rock fragmentation, the height of the cut, and angle of swing of the bucket on shovel performance. A time study is conducted on shovels in an opencast coal mine with experimental blasts of rocks to assess the impact of different factors on the performance of the shovel. Based on the data, the authors applied multiple regression (MR) and artificial neural network (ANN) techniques to develop different models for the prediction of the shovel cycle time. Developed models are validated by comparing the predicted data with actual field data. With the help of the best model, the plausible fleet size is determined in order to utilize the shovel and dumper optimally and to improve the performance of shovel–dumper operation.
