This chapter presents, in summarized form, standard procedures for making separations of minerals from their ores by the froth flotation process to produce marketable concentrates. These are typical mineral separations which are being made commercially with the reagents and conditions generally used in the mining industry. Typical separations are presented for 17 metallic and 11 nonmetallic ores. The review of each includes a brief description of the mineral and the particular problem presented, general market specifications for its concentrates, an outline of treatment method, and kinds and quantities of reagents usually employed. This chapter does not include de- tails about ore preparation (crushing, grinding, and classification), elements of ore and pulp transportation (conveying and pumping), or concentrate preparation for market (thickening, filtering, and drying). In each presentation it is assumed, if not detailed further, that the ore is ground to the economical point of liberation of the minerals to be separated. Specific information, such as ratio of concentration and recovery, that depends upon the grade of ore being treated is considered beyond the scope of this chapter. Effective flotation separations that produce marketable concentrates may produce widely varying results in terms of percent recovery and still be economically profitable operations. Details of plant practice on specific ores are presented in Chapters 16 and 17. In this chapter the chemical names of the reagents are given. The extent to which different reagents are used in flotation plants in the U. S. is presented in Chapter 4. A compilation of the various flotation reagents, their trade names, manufacturers, and use has been prepared by H. T. Spedden. ANTIMONY The principal ore mineral of antimony, stibnite (Sb2 S3), is generally found in the U. S. in ore bodies in association with other valuable minerals such as galena (Pbs), sphalerite (ZnS), chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), or tetrahedrite (3Cu2 S – Sb2 S3), The sulfo-salt minerals of antimony, such as tetrahedrite or pyrargyrite, are often associated with high silver values, so that the presence of antimony may indicate economic importance even though the actual antimony content is low. "This study focuses on partial leaching of coal pyrite with sodium sulfite in order to increase its degree of liberation from the coal matrix, which might help to increase the removal of coal pyrite, together with trace elements of arsenic (As), selenium (Se) and mercury (Hg) by froth flotation. The U.S. Bureau of Mines’ two-stage reverse flotation process was applied to further reject coal pyrite in the second stage, where pyrite was floated while coal was depressed. The results show that the leached coal flotation with sodium sulfite produced lower pyritic sulfur content in the clean coal by approximately 25% compared to the flotation of unleached coal. The synergism mechanism between the leaching and the two-stage flotation is delineated. The rejection of trace elements (As, Hg and Se) after the two-stage flotation process with unleached coal followed approximately that of pyritic sulfur (64.6%). However, after the two-stage flotation with leached coal, the rejection of Se was as high as that of pyritic sulfur (77.9%), while the rejections of As and Hg were 20% lower than that of pyritic sulfur, or followed approximately the same rejections obtained through the two-stage flotation with unleached coal.IntroductionSO2 is a reducing reagent, but when it is combined with oxygen in an acidic solution, it will become a strong oxidizing reagent for leaching coal pyrite. Sundaram et al. (2001) found that the reagent could leach coal pyrite to produce ferric iron, which, in turn, catalyzed the oxidation of SO2. Similarly, Cho et al. (2009) found that the reagent could leach pyrite as well as mercury from coal. In the present study, coal was preconditioned by partially leaching coal pyrite in water-coal slurry with sodium sulfite at 48° C. The partial leaching of coal pyrite may enhance its degree of liberation from the coal matrix and give a chance to be rejected more effectively during the flotation.The two-stage U.S. Bureau of Mines’ reverse flotation process (Miller, 1975) was used in this study. The first stage is conventional flotation, in which coal is floated while material with higher ash and pyrite content remains in the cell. Kerosene is used as a promoter to float the coal and MIBC (methyl isobutyl carbinol) is used as a frother. In the second stage, the floated coal from the first stage is depressed using a starch-based reagent, while coal pyrite is floated using potassium amyl xanthate. In this second stage, the liberation of coal pyrite from the coal matrix seems to be an important factor for successful rejection of coal pyrite."

The abrasiveness of a mineral or rock is an extremely important topic in the mining industry and is generally measured by the Bond abrasion index (AI). However, to determine such an index by the Bond test requires 1,600 g of sample with particle sizes ranging from ½” to ¾”, which are not available in certain situations, such as ore prospecting, drilling, and geometallurgical studies. In order to investigate the abrasiveness of smaller-sized sample materials, a modified LCPC test was developed, which allows testing fine materials (i.e., 1.0 mm or smaller) to predict wear in ore processing circuits and anticipate possible failures resulting from changes in abrasive characteristics of the ore being processed. The results for 16 different materials indicated a good correlation with the AI and the modified LCPC, resulting in a reliable alternative for the AI. History Due to its strong affinity for oxygen, aluminium as an element was isolated only after many other rarer metals had been prepared and studied. It was just over one hundred years ago that two scientists, Hans Christian Oersted and Friedrich Wohler, produced the first few pellets of aluminium and determined its physical properties. These early investigators used metallic potassium as a reducing agent. Later, St. Claire Deville, by using sodium instead of potassium, improved the yield in the reduction and produced some pounds of aluminium. From a figure of about $110 per pound in 1855, the price had fallen to about $4 per pound by 1886. In that year, a very important discovery was made independently by Charles Martin Hall in Oberlin , Ohio, and Paul . Heroult in France. Stated in its simplest terms, the discovery of Hall and Heroult was that aluminium could be produced by electrolyzing a solution of the oxide in molten cryolite. The application of the Hall-Heroult process made the metal immediately available in commercial quantities and, by 1900, the price had fallen to 23 cents per pound. The growth of the industry in the past fifty years is well known, and is outside the scope of this paper. It is, perhaps, not generally known that aluminium was first produced in Canada at Shawinigan Falls in 1901. Since that time, production has been continuous at one or more smelters in the Province of Quebec. The largest of these smelters, which is also the largest aluminium smelter in the world, is at Arvida, Quebec, on the Saguenay river. A large power potential and access to ocean shipping were the two principal reasons for the establishment of aluminium production facilities in the Saguenay district. It is interesting to note that the aluminium industry, as a large user of power, took an active part in the early industrial development at Niagara Falls and Shawinigan Falls, and is now repeating the process in the Saguenay valley.

"Real time analysis of conveyed bulk materials can be used to improve process performance by reducing variability and upgrading ore quality through selective removal of increments of flow that do not meet appropriate selection criteria. This paper focusses on proven Prompt Gamma Neutron Activation Analysis (PGNAA) and microwave transmission technologies used to representatively measure conveyed ore quality in real time so that meaningful decisions can be made between the mine and mill. This enables the effective removal by bulk diversion of small increments of conveyed flow such as waste, highly deleterious material or sub-economic material from the mill feed. Improved ore quality in plant feed optimises process performance, reduces processing costs and minimises tailings generation. Analysis is unaffected by particle size, dust, layering or segregation, mineralogy and belt speed. Technologies are explained and performance examples given from installations in copper and iron ore. The technology has been used successfully in bulk sorting for over twenty years typically using measured increments of a few minutes. Improvements in technology and calibration performance have resulted in accurate measurements over increments of thirty seconds and below.INTRODUCTION Ore quality variability exists on a number of scales. Block model grades represent a few hundred to many thousands of tonnes. Grade control at the mine occurs on a scale typically down to the size of a haul truck, which may be a few hundred tonnes. Highly variable ore quality is detrimental to process efficiency and effectiveness. Processing waste or low grade ore when higher quality feed is available represents a lost opportunity to generate higher revenues earlier in the operational life. Measuring ore quality accurately over short time increments during conveying enables small increments to be measured and diverted according to their quality. The paper explains the technology and benefits. Neutron irradiation techniques were considered potentially suitable for conveyed bauxite measurement by Beurton et al, 1995. Tran & Evans (2001) concluded there was no equivalent technology to Prompt Gamma Neutron Activation Analysis (PGNAA) in terms of material penetration power. PGNAA was evaluated by Nelson & Riddle (2003) for possible use in the phosphate industry and recommended its use for further characterisation of the mine’s various ore types to improve stockpile allocation and grade control. Cottle (2007) discussed test work for an iron sinter application and Delwig et al (2011) described the successful installation in 2009 and performance of PGNAA for base-to-acid ratio control in sinter feed with the analyser output used to control lime addition. Geoscan (PGNAA) works very well on iron ore and can “improve control over what is happening in the plant” and that comfort can be provided in knowing that the product is on-spec according to Minnett (2010). PGNAA is not yet used in the minerals sector for tariff purposes as has occurred since 2000 with Coalscan (PGNAA) in coal (Minnett, 2010)."

This paper describing the mining methods of the Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co. is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods and costs in various mining districts of the United States. The story of mining at Inspiration is of particular interest because, after 127,812,000 tons of low-grade copper ore were successfully mined, the mining method was changed from block caving to open-pit. As the open pit became deeper, many features of the former block-caving operation that were exposed elucidated concepts of the mechanics of caving that previously had been assumed but not observed. The conversion to open-pit mining was accomplished by unique combinations of equipment and the introduction of ingenious engineering and operating practices that have extended the expected life of the mine for many years.

This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States is a continuation of a series of reports made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Coordinating Fuel Research (C. Water contact angles in the air/water/francolite, fuel oil/water/francolite and fuel oil/water/quartz systems were measured to describe the wetting characteristics of these minerals. It was found that white francolite is more hydrophilic than black and tan francolite both in the absence and presence of fatty acid addition. The contact angle measurement results do not correlate very well with the flotation response and it appears that kinetic aspects of the bubble attachment process play an important role in the francolite-fatty acid flotation system.

The smelting plant of the British Columbia Copper Co. at Greenwood, B. C., now closed because of the decline in the price of copper due.to the European war, is of special interest to metallurgists for several reasons. It was successfully smelting in blast furnaces the lowest grade copper ore of all plants in America. In order to do so, it had to run at very hig~; efficiency, which necessarily required a large tonnage per square foot of hearth area, together with the minimum amount of labor and other costs. The furnaces smelted daily 2,250 tons of ore (6.62 tons per sq. ft. of hearth area), carrying 0.85 per cent. of copper, at a smelting cost of 81.18 per ton. The entire plant required 130 men to operate it and keep up repairs, showing a labor efficiency of about 17.5 Dons per man per day. In the present paper, the method of obtaining these results is shown. Most of the information contained in this description I obtained as Assistant Superintendent, during the two years preceding the present shutdown. "The term “aggregate” has a number of definitions depending primarily on the use of the material. Aggregate in some context is sand, gravel, crushed stone, slag or other material of mineral composition used in bituminous and portland cement concrete, mortar, plaster, railroad ballast, filter beds and a variety of other uses where aggregates can be utilized.Of the natural aggregates, crushed stone is widely used for most construction purposes. Crushed stone can be mined from a variety of rock types such as limestone, dolomite (dolostone), granites, and granitic type rocks, basalt, gabbro (trap rock), sandstones, schist, marble, gneiss, quartzite, rhyolite, as well as other rock types. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) breaks down the rocks by type sold as follows: limestone, dolomite, marble, calcareous marl, shell, granite, trap rock (basalt, diorite) sandstone/quartzite, slate, volcanic cinder and scoria and miscellaneous stone.In 2015, the USGS estimates that 1.32 Gt (1.45 billion st) of crushed stone were produced in the United States. The volume of crushed stone produced, and the numerous mines that produce it make the crushed stone industry the largest mining industry in the United States. The five leading states for production of crushed stone in 2015 were Texas, Pennsylvania, Missouri, Florida and Ohio. The size of the first two states certainly helps in output because of the large market area. The remaining states benefit from being able to barge along rivers to outside markets in adjoining states. Georgia producers rail large amounts of granitic aggregate to Florida and adjacent states devoid of crushed stone aggregate, especially skid resistant aggregate (aggregate used on the top course of asphalt roads)."

Data assembled by the Bureau of Mines , coupled with requests from coal companies , have emphasized the desirability of establishing standardized specifications for brattice cloth with particular respect to durability and fireproofing . Brattice cloth is a canvas or other material , often covered with some fireproofing composition , which is used extensively in coal mining for temporarily deflecting air into pillar workings and maintaining ventilation at the working faces . These specifications will be established , it is planned , through a cooperative program in which the U. S. Bureau of Standards will make a series of tests of various brattice cloths treated with respect to fire- resisting qualities and the U. S. Bureau of Mines will continue to assemble field data on the use of brattice cloth . Plans now are being made for this cooperative work. Without attempting to make a complete survey , the Bureau of Mines has made preliminary studies and investigations , and verious representative coal - mining companies have furnished detailed information . The information thus gained will be used as the basis for the cooperative investigation , but the Bureau of Mines would welcome additional information from mine operators on the character and weight of brattice cloth , conditions of use , durability , quantity employed and price . Such information should be sent to the Director , Bureau of Mines , Washington , D. C. The mine operator is interested in procuring at reasonable cost a brattice cloth with lasting fireproofing quality and of as great durability and strength as possible . There has been a lack of assembled data and knowledge regarding the subject , but the Bureau of Mines feels that this lack of knowledge may be overcome if the coal -mining companies will lend their hearty support to the cooperative investigation and submit information relative to the use of brattice cloth in their own properties . Information contained in this report is based on data obtained from coal operators in bituminous districts of Pennsylvania , Alabama , Utah , Indiana , Illinois , Colorado and Nova Scotia .

Li-ion batteries are now used in electric vehicles (EVs), plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) and, hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). Nanostructured Li(NiyMnzCo1-y-z)O2 is one of the more popular cathode chemistries for automotive Li-ion battery, due to its enhanced properties such as large surface area, short diffusion length, enhanced ionic and electronic conductivity, improved mechanical strength and structural integrity [Pan et al, 2013]. Recycling of Li-ion batteries helps to mitigate environmental effects of virgin metal extractions along with improper disposal of end of life batteries. To fulfill these objectives of the recycling, recovery of pure streams of the involved metals should be considered. In this study, the batteries were first discharged and dismantled in an inert atmosphere (Ar). The electrodes were then heat treated in a box furnace. This was done in order to break the chains of the adhesive (PVDF) and consequently separate the metallic substrates Cu and Al from the electrochemically active compound. This heat-treatment also helped to simplify the dissolution of the metal constituents in the electrochemically active compound from the cathode in the acid leaching process. Solvent extraction was chosen to achieve separation and recovery of metals with higher purity from these leachates. In the scope of the present work, a complete process from the point of dismantling to separation of constituent metals using solvent extraction was studied.

"There are few people more qualified to speak of the tumultuous times in the global mining industry during the past four years than Newmont Mining Corp. president and chief executive officer Gary Goldberg.Goldberg stepped into his current position in 2012, just before MINExpo 2012. Gold prices had hit record highs not long before that ($54.15/g or $1,856.40/oz on Sept. 8, 2011), expansions were happening around the world and the gold mining sector was still living in the glow of one of its longest upswings in history.That all changed between April 8 and April 15, 2013 when the price of gold dropped by nearly $200/oz ($46.27/g or $1,586.20/oz on April 8 to $40.45/g or $1,386.80/oz on April 15), putting an end to the decade-long mining boom and forcing mining companies like Newmont to re-evaluateeverything.Three years later, with the gold sector recovering, Newmont Mining is not only surviving but is thriving with a pair of mines coming online, Long Canyon in Nevada and Merian in Suriname. On Oct. 1, the Merian Mine went into production on time and more than $150 million under the initial development capital budget.Goldberg, who was one of the featured speakers at the opening session of MINExpo International 2016 on Sept. 26, also spoke with Mining Engineering about the previous four years and the future of the industry.“Mining goes through cycles all the time and gold is no different,” Goldberg told Mining Engineering when asked about surviving the downturn since 2012. “I thought it was important that we take a good methodical and steady approach across the business to determine what was the right thing to do and to set the business up to improve performance. Anyone can cut costs for the short term, but we set out to do it in a sustainable and reliable way. We created a program we call Full Potential to look for sustainable ways to reduce costs and improve productivity. That program has taken more than a billion dollars out of our costs since we implemented it 2013 and that shows up in our results. Our all in sustaining costs are down 28 percent and our productivity is up 39 percent.”During the downturn, Newmont restructured its business model, sold off some assets and created a leaner, more nimble operation. It has paid off with the addition of two new mines and the acquisition of another, the Cripple Creek & Victor Mine in Cripple Creek, CO.“The gold industry had not seen a downturn in 12 years. We had half a generation that had not experienced a downturn, so helping them through that in an organized way and keeping a view toward the long term throughout the downturn was important. We were one of the few companies that continued to invest in assets,” he said."

Although mining is currently one of the smallest academic units on the Colorado School of Mines(CSM) campus, it is alive and well, with nearly 100 undergraduate and graduate students. For many years, Mines has had undergraduate and graduate programs in hard-rock mining. The school has recently transferred its physical mineral processing activities to the Mining Department. The program has also expanded to include tunneling, underground construction and industrial minerals. There are current discussions about increased research activities on cement and other construction materials. The Mining Department also teaches its share of what is called the “distributed core” courses with curricular requirements common to related programs, as well as mining safety and health, in conjunction with our continuing education department.

Prevention of coal-mine explosions depends largely upon thorough knowledge of the causes that initiate explosions. A review of coal-mine explosions in one geographical area when supplemented by nationwide data of similar nature, should serve as a guide for the adoption of measures for explosion prevention. Explosions in bituminous-coal mines of the United States during the 10 years ended December 31, 1932, ranked third in the causes of fatal accidents and constituted 16.1 percent of all fatal accidents in bituminous mines. Kentucky now ranks fourth in coal output in the coal-producing States of this country; a study of the coal-mine explosions in this state will be of definite interest locally among coal-mining people, as well as to those in the coal-mining industry who are concerned in preventing coal-mine explosions. This circular reviews gas and dust explosions in Kentucky coal mines to show their hazards, to point out the influence of certain factors in causing explosions, and to indicate the effectiveness of preventive measures.

A Bayesian decision model of minimun risk, based on the probability and costs of mine discoveries and non-economic projects, is presented for massive sulphide exploration in the Canadian Shield. The sample used for the model is composed of data relating to forty mines, sixty non-economic sulphide occurrences, and sixty occurrences of graphitic and pyritic material. These economic and barren samples consist of drill-tested occurrences which were, in varying degree, characterized by conductivity anomalies. Given the large size, the reliability and the homogeneity of the data base available for massive sulphide exploration, it is shown that certain statistical models can and should be utilized as a tool for decision-making by explorationists. Given this data base, information theory tells us that only those signals that are independent of one another will transmit information with minimum error. An ensemble of six significant multilevel signals, markedly independent of one another and consisting of numeric and geometric form descriptions derived from Bouguer anomaly, aeromagnetic and physiographic maps, were identified and evaluated by case studies. The use of these signals as input in a simple statistical procedure, or in a carefully planned and experienced visual appreciation scheme, can be of significant aid in decisions concerning the choice of favourable areas or sectors to explore in detail. The method of discriminant analysis is theoretically and practically suited for the statistical modelling involved. By way of a simulation on our statistical model, the efficiency of the model and of the underlying criteria is determined for historic cases and, by inference, for its validity in future exploration. An approximate optimized solution is derived from the model which suggests that over 90% of the known ore could be found by screening, according to a model such as that herein described, and drilling only 30% of the targets (mostly barren) normally identified and tested in current and past exploration.

Since the waste gases of the blast-furnace came to be generally utilized in heating the blast and raising steam, the gradual improvement in the economy of fuel, mainly through the nse of higher temperature in the blast, has impoverished the gases. The increased output per unit of measurement of the furnace, and the increased height of the furnace, have markedly increased the resistance to the blast, thus enormously increasing the duty required from the gases. In other words, a gas reduced in heating power by a further dilution of CO, is required to raise the temperature of the blast to 1800' Fahr., where formerly 600' was a good temperature, and at the same time to raise steam enough to drive the air into the furnace at a pressure of from four to eight pounds in coke practice, and from eight to twelve pounds in anthracite practice, and also pump at least double the water formerly used at furnaces. Hence the necessity for the employment of the best scheme for thoroughly consuming these gases with the least dilution of air, and the use of the best device for absorbing the heat prodnced for the purposes above mentioned. In a former paper before this Society the writer called attention to such improvements as had been made by his firm, by which it was claimed 1400' Fahr. could be maintained in the blast by a less consumption of gas than was required to maintain 900' when using pipe-ovens; and it would not be too much to say that 1600' Fahr. might now be written in place of the 1-400. Since the inception of the Ashton (formerly Kalumburu) Joint Venture in 1972 the parties have expended 524 million in exploration for diamonds in the Kimberley region. This has resulted in the discovery of the currently subeconomic Ellendale deposits in 1976/77 and the economic Argyle - Smoke Creek Deposits in 1979/80. In addition to Argyle and Ellendale some 90 kimberlitic and lamproitic bodies have been discovered grouped broadly into three provinces, on the west, east and north margins of the Kimberley block. These bodies range in size from dyke-like features less than one metre in width to pipes with a surface area of 128ha. The bodies with larger surface area are volcanic crater deposits, infilled with air-fall and water deposited tuffs and epiclastic sediments.

IN reality, the Butte district is the birthplace of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., for it was here that strength was gathered and means provided for later expansions of the Company. The Butte district was organized at a miners' meeting on Aug. 20, 1866, primarily for gold placer-mining operations. Substantial amounts of placer gold were recovered from gulch gravels during the period 1862 to 1868. The earliest lode claim locations in the district were recorded in July and August 1864.
