The liability created by building this railway is the great financial problem before the people of British Columbia at the present time. In dealing with the subject, I propose to divide it into three periods: The Past - The Present - and The Future. The Past The primary objects in building the railway were to provide an independent and direct route for the Grand Trunk Pacific railway into the city of Vancouver, and to open the central and north-eastern portion of the province.. This vast territory, almost one-half the entire area of British Columbia, has great wealth in fruit, agricultural, and grazing lands; timber, coal, water-power and minerals of all kinds, including some of the richest placer deposits in the world. Rivers and lakes teem with fish. Big game, including moose, elk, caribou, deer, grizzly and black bear, mountain goat and sheep, is plentiful and there is an abundance of small game and fur-bearing animals. In addition, its scenic attractions are unsurpassed in Canada. To develop these resources it was considered necessary to build a railway from south to north as a main artery of transportation and, if necessary, branch lines to carry heavy .shipments of coal or other commodities. Lighter freight may be handled by motor trucks from distant points to the railway.

O the American coal man, Australian coal mining most appear to have little, if any, influence on American coal-mining practice and to bear little relation to it. Actually, the relationship has been close, for Australian operators have carefully studied American practice by reading American technical publications, by consulting American engineers, and by visits to Ameriean operations. They have leaned heavily on America for their supply of mechanization equipment and many American mining-machinery manufacturers are active in that country, supplying its needs and furnishing technical assistance. Australia's influence on American coal mining has been obscure and probably negligible. However, it seems reasonable to assume that this influence will increase. The wartime development of air transportation will inevitably bring these two countries into much more intimate contact than existed in recent years. This report presents a Bureau of Mines study comparing the construction costs, leakage measurements, and predicted performance of different types of large stoppings built and tested in a room-and-pillar oil-shale mine. The six full-sized structures (30 ft high by 55 ft wide) included both permanent and temporary stoppings and were fabricated using materials ranging from structural steel to coated brattice cloth. Leakage across each stopping was measured at differential pressures ranging up to 1.0 in w.g., using both the brattice window method and sulfur hexa-fluoride (SF6) tracer gas. Blast air pressures resulting from a full-scale face blast of approximately 1,800 lb of ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (ANFO) explosives were measured across two of the stoppings and the pre-and post-leakage rates were compared for all the stoppings. Overall performance of the stoppings for production applications was evaluated using an operational model of a two-panel oil-shale mine. Different combinations of temporary and permanent stoppings were evaluated based upon ventilation performance and construction and operating costs.

Safety in South African mines is a subject of significant interest, since many mining companies are experiencing production deficits due to safety-related stoppages. In this paper, safety data from the South African platinum mining sector is analysed for the period 2006 to 2010. The data was obtained from company annual reports as well as the Department of Mineral Resources, and analysis in the study is limited to injury and fatality data only. The overall safety performances of companies in the sector are compared, and opportunities for benchmarking and recognising potential sources of best practice amongst platinum miners are identified. Improving safety usually incurs a cost, and mining companies are particularly conscious of the importance of controlling costs. However, cost considerations often deal only with direct costs, and it has been shown that indirect costs are usually far more significant. Therefore, a greater safety spend will usually result in the creation of value for the mine since it will reduce the indirect costs associated with accidents. The results of some recent research in this area are presented. In this light, where available, the financial performances of mining companies in the sector, obtained from published annual results, are included in the benchmarking exercise to determine whether there is any correlation with safety performance.

The current moment experienced by the mineral industry is marked by a series of economic, social and environmental challenges. Among the main challenges, it is important to highlight the decreasing in ore grades with the gradual depletion of the existing deposits, the high volatility in international commodity prices and the operational inefficiencies in the mine, beneficiation, and metallurgical plants. In this context, mining companies are continuously looking for alternatives that minimize production costs and maximize overall production. In addition, recent tragedies involving tailings dam collapses in Brazil, reinforced the need for a more responsible, sustainable, and conscious mining, such as aiming the preservation and rehabilitation of the land environment. In this scenario, the Sensor-Based Sorting (SBS) technology is currently getting more space into the mining market. This separation technology aims the removal of gangue material in coarse particle size fractions, prior to comminution and concentration stages. As a consequence, the technology allows a smaller consumption of energy, water, chemical reagents and other inputs. Moreover, the sensor-based sorting is a dry processing technology and favors the reduction of fine material to be sent to the tailings. The aim of this paper is to provide information regarding the technical and economical evaluation of SBS technology applicability to a zinc silicate mining in Brazil. The project evaluation was performed in two stages: laboratory test work and the execution of a pilot plant. The execution of a pilot plant allowed the technology optimization, quantification of downstream process effects, such as a proper economic evaluation about the technology benefits. In Australia, Safe Work legislation requires mines to have a documented ‘Safety Case’ explaining how a mine will safely manage all major hazards. A similar requirement is legislated or inferred by regulation in all jurisdictions. For small scale, instabilities leading to day-to-day seismic hazards, a ‘Stability Safety Case’ built around observational methods and measurement triggered responses can be effective because adverse situations are easily identified and the costs of lower control measures are not onerous. Also, if the influence of a volume of yield on the mine load system is small, the response of the system will be more predictable. However, for episodes of large scale mine instability, the hazard derives from the widespread, multi component influence of the event on the mine load system. As the system response depends on interactions between many parts, the resolution of predictions will be lower and situations can arise without local precedent. Further, as episodes of large scale instability change the stiffness and nature of the connectedness between parts of the mine load system, the behavior of the system before the event will be a poor empirical basis for forecasts of event related hazards. Most importantly, Triggered Action Response Plans (TARPs) and ‘traffic light’ warning systems cannot make design choices or identify new hazard phenomena. They are ‘lower’ control measures targeting explicit human-made instability hypotheses. As such, the Safety Cases related to management of hazard from potential large scale seismic events and mine instability cannot rely solely on TARPs. Mines that successfully manage meaningful dynamic instability always acknowledge the ultimate reliance on expert human intuition, knowledge and imagination to appreciate the range of possible hazard scenarios, to make stability hypotheses and propose solutions. Complex analysis, TARPs and measurements are critical steps in the human decision cycle, but only support the making and testing of ‘Stability Hypotheses’ made by expert engineers. Relying on expert skill and judgement as essential components of a Safety Case, however essential, introduces human vulnerabilities. Another challenge is that the expert decision making process is hard to document. Beck et al 2019 first described an organizational and procedural framework for maintenance of an ongoing large-scale ‘Stability Safety Case' where a degree of expert judgement and imagination is needed to manage a seismically active mine. The structured data appreciation process outlined sufficient measurements, analysis and appreciation to confirm the stability state of the mine and was applicable to all underground mines. After several years of implementation in various forms in stoping, caving and room and pillar mines, this update addresses lessons learned and describes some considerations for numerical forecasting to establish a base case, and some challenges for empirical hazard identification.

"There have been about 42 fatalities in underground coal mines between 1984 and 2015 where the victim was struck, pinned, or run over by a mobile machine (MM) such as a shuttle car, scoop, or battery hauler. MSHA has issued a proposed rule requiring proximity detection systems (PDS) on MMs in an effort to prevent future fatalities. Currently approved PDSs use electromagnetic (EM) technology to detect the presence of a miner and impose machine controls to prevent contact. The disadvantages of an EM-based PDS on MMs include the need for a miner-wearable component (MWC), environmental interferences, EM interferences from other devices, and low localization range and accuracy. NIOSH researchers are investigating alternate technologies that could improve the capabilities of the current PDSs. Many technologies were reviewed, and NIOSH researchers identified RFID, LIDAR, RADAR, ultrasonic detection, and computer vision as candidates for PDS development. The performance characteristics of each technology and its applicability to an underground mining environment will be discussed, along with international developments and implementations, and the concept of sensor fusion. INTRODUCTION PDSs provide safety to mine workers by detecting their presence (and in some cases location) around a machine. These PDSs provide a warning zone, which triggers an alarm, and a stop zone, which halts the machine before it contacts the miner. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) issued a final rule requiring that PDSs be installed on all continuous mining machines (CMMs) on the working section, with the exception of full-faced machines, according to a phase-in schedule for newly manufactured and existing equipment [1]. The PDSs that were designed for CMMs have since been adapted to other mobile machines. Mobile machines include scoops, which are used as general utility vehicles, as well as coal hauling machines, such as shuttle cars, ram cars, and continuous haulage systems. MSHA has examined all accident reports from 1984 to 2014, and determined that 42 fatalities could have been prevented on mobile machines had a PDS been installed [2]. As such, MSHA issued a proposed rule that would require mobile machines on working sections (with the exception of longwall sections) to be equipped with a PDS. This rule would follow a phase-in schedule for newly manufactured and existing equipment. Currently available PDSs are based on electromagnetic (EM) technology. NIOSH researchers developed a shell-based magnetic flux density distribution model [3] for determining the position of a miner near a machine. A typical system would consist of four generators positioned around the perimeter of the machine. Each generator is a coil of insulated wire wrapped around a ferrite core. The magnetic field strength is proportional to the current running through the coil. Miners working on the section have an MWC, which is a transceiver that measures the field strength emitted by the generators and transmits a data packet over an RF link which contains the field strength reading to the PDS controller mounted on the machine. The magnetic field generators are pulsed sequentially such that the MWC can identify which generator’s field strength it is reading. This type of system utilizes the principle of magnetic flux density: the closer the MWC is to the field generators, the higher the field strength reading. Thus a miner’s presence can be determined once he gets too close to the machine, because his MWC will measure a magnetic flux density beyond a certain threshold. These thresholds are utilized on a per-generator basis to “shape” the fields for both warning and stop zones around a machine, as illustrated in Figure 1."

This method was standardized after considerable experimentation5 on the nature of the fusion of coal ash and the various factors which affect its determination. Introduction Core drilling of the bituminous sands of northern Alberta has been carried on by the Mines and Geology Branch, Department of Mines and Resources, under the supervision of the Director, W. B. Timm. This was part of the Dominion Government's wartime investigations, which included an agreement with Abasand Oils, Limited, for the study of commercial possibilities of obtaining oil from the bituminous sands. The drilling programme, commenced in 1942 by the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, was continued in 1943 and subsequently by Boyles Bros. under contract with the Mines and Geology Branch. Several areas have been investigated and one of these, the Mildred-Ruth Lakes area, ' herein described, is of special importance in that it contains a sufficiently rich and large deposit of bituminous sands and bitumen beds to warrant consideration of commercial developments for the production of oil. The Steepbank Area, East Side of Athabaska River The Steepbank area, on the east side of Athabaska river in township 92, about twenty-two miles north of Fort McMurray, was selected for drilling in 1942 because previous investigations by Ells indicated it was one of considerable promise both from the standpoint of having reasonably rich bituminous sands under relatively light overburden and also having an excellent tailing disposal and plant site for large-scale operations in proximity to Athabaska river. The drilling done in 1942 and 1943 was largely exploratory, and, when it was found that the southerly part of township 92 had only low-grade material, closer drilling was done in 1944-45 in the richer, more northerly part.

The Dolph Mine fire site is located in Lackawanna County, PA, approximately three miles northeast of the city of Scranton. The fire was burning in both coal refuse (culm) and underground anthracite mine workings. It was reportedly begun by rubbish burning on top of a culm bank. A site investigation was completed in 2006 to define the extent of the fire and to recommend fire control measures. A cut off trench was selected as the principal control method. Plans and specifications were prepared in late 2006. The project was bid and a contractor selected in early 2007. The trench construction was completed in 2007. This paper describes the investigation and selection of the fire control method and discusses the trench construction.

Pressure losses in mine ventilation systems are estimated using friction factors and shock loss factors. The efficient planning and designing ofmine ventilation systems depend on the accuracy of the friction factors as well as the shock loss factors that are taken into consideration. While there is a much more acceptable knowledge of what constitutes friction loss in mine roadways, the shock loss factors are in general readily not available for all possible contexts of flow separation phenomena in mines. One such special case of shock loss in mines is the train of mine cars in the airway. Mine cars are widely used for the transportation of material, and the information on shock loss factor for mine cars is limited. This paper examines the pressure loss occurring due to a train of mine cars in an airway using scale model studies and numerical investigations. Computational fluid dynamic (CFD) studies are conducted using four different turbulence models. The performance of different turbulence models is analyzed by comparing it with the experimental results. The study suggests that the boundary layer resolution method is significant in the simulation of shock loss. From the study, it is found that the shock loss factors from presently available model overestimate the pressure loss by 7 to 15 times. A better prediction model for the shock loss factor of a train of mine cars in the airway is proposed using the experimental results.

During the 14 years since the last update to National Instrument 43-101 (NI 43-101), there have been many discussions between Canadian regulators and mining companies about mining disclosure deficiencies that arise from regulatory reviews. These discussions are not made public, and as a result, there has been some drift in how NI 43-101 is interpreted by the regulators, which in turn creates uncertainty for the mining companies trying to comply with the instrument. To reduce uncertainty in mining disclosure requirements, the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) has issued a notice to update the current NI 43-101 with a streamlined instrument and form. Changes and benefits are listed in the “CSA Notice and Request for Comment — Proposed Repeal and Replacement of National Instrument 43-101 Standards of Disclosure for Mineral Projects,” which is available on the Ontario, Quebec, Alberta and British Columbia Securities Commission websites. The public has been invited to comment, with the comment period ending on Oct. 10, 2025. The 43-101 Companion Policy (43-101 CP) provides an update to the views of the regulators on how the CSA staff interpret and apply certain provisions of the instrument. Collectively, some of the changes to NI 43-101, the form and 43-101 CP are likely to increase the financial and other burdens on the mining companies responsible for the disclosure, and the qualified persons (QPs) who create the disclosure. In other instances, there are missed opportunities to reduce the burden on mining companies and QPs without impacting the markets.

Coal refuse slurries stored in tailings impoundments can potentially lead to environmental concerns such as effluent seepage, property devaluation, and in extreme cases, dam failures. Pressure filtration offers an opportunity to reduce the impoundment requirements by providing significantly drier solids. A full-factorial design was used to study the effects of temperature and pH on dewatering a refuse slurry obtained from a coal preparation facility in Pennsylvania, USA. The experimental results indicated a strong effect of temperature on cake moisture as the cake moisture after about 2800 s was 22% at 43 °C and only 36% at 10 °C for tests conducted at pH 3. ANOVA results confirmed the statistical significance of pH, temperature, and their interaction effect. Also, the results showed no significant differences between the tests conducted near neutral and alkaline pH values at low and ambient temperatures. On the other hand, Tukey’s test indicated higher reductions in cake moisture at higher temperatures for lower pH values. This study affirms the need to monitor and control the pressure filtration process as throughput could significantly vary with changes in temperature and slurry conditions.

A refractory U–Mo associated ore containing jordisite which enclose U, Mo component, and impede penetration, diffusion process of leaching, oxidation agent was investigated through three approaches of focusing on U, Mo extraction. The results indicate flotation beneficiation without followed metallurgical process is not appropriate because of high target metals loss rate via water leaching. H2SO4, H2O2 dosage recommended to oxidation leaching are 10 and 6–8% of ore mass, and U, Mo leaching rate are 92.71 and 52.16% respectively. For the acid pressure leaching, U, Mo leaching rate 93.75 and 76.07% are achieved under optimal temperature 130–140 °C and H2O2 dosage 8% combined with pressure air 0.6 MPa. Fluidized bed furnace roasting parameters include air flow rate 0.64 m/s, air ore ratio 0.3 m 3/kg at roasting temperature 550 °C with U, Mo leaching rate 93.2 and 89.5%, so enhanced metallurgical process effectively destroy wrapper and increase metal recovery rate.

A power supply to operate fluorescent or mercury vapor lamps from 300 volt dc coal mine trolley wires has been developed for the Bureau of Mines. A high frequency regulated inverter unit incorporates ballasts for a mix of lamp loads up to 650 watts. For 600 volt trolley systems an additional power converter unit was developed to step down the dc voltage to 300 volts for the inverter unit. Both units have operated in a working coal mine for over 12 months without need for servicing. The lamp load in these tests included two 100 watt mercury vapor head lamps and six 75 watt fluorescent lamps.

Polyethylene glycol monoalkyl ethers (CnEm) render quartz hydrophobic while feldspar remains hydrophilic. As a result quartz can be separated from feldspar in small frothless flotation devices such as the Hallimond tube. The separation can be accomplished at room temperature at pH < 7 and C16E33 concentrations between 10-5 and 10-4 M for quartz particles smaller than 0.4 mm. No separation is observed when feldspar ore containing about 60 % of feldspar and 40% of quartz is subjected to flotation in a laboratory flotation machine. The reason for the lack of separation is a low hydrophobicity of quartz in the presence of polyethylene glycol monoalkyl ethers and high intensity of mixing in the flotation machine. The flotometric tests showed that the contact angle of quartz in monoalkyl ethers of polyethylene glycol solutions is less than about 18 degrees and depends on the structure and concentration of the ether and the pH of the system.

Ground control research for underground coal mining has progressed significantly over the past several decades. With this progression, and the ability to analyze and model underground conditions, underground working conditions have significantly improved. In order to progress further, the behavior of roof support must be known and be adequately modeled, such that models can be used for support design under different geological and mining conditions. This paper discusses the results from a research project funded by the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and undertaken by Southern Illinois University Carbondale and Peabody Energy. The research involved installation of active and passive instrumented bolts in mines, recording relevant in situ data and then attempting to model the behavior of the bolts as mining progressed. Such calibrated models could aid in design of roof supports under different geological and mining layouts and thus, hopefully, further improve rock related safety.

Computer simulation has become an everyday practice in thennodynamic and materials research. Advanced thennochemical algorithms take into account heat transfer effects and salient reaction kinetics when applied for process models. In particular, the combination of mass transfer or overall reaction rates with multi-component Gibbs energy minimisation provides an effective tool for simulation of industrial thennochemical processes and processing of materials. In this work the combination of rate factors with the Gibbs energy technique was studied by using the novel program ChemSheet, which operates through Microsoft&apos;s Excel® spreadsheets. Such processes as, for example, CVD of pure silicon production, titania pigment manufacturing, vapour pressure of Mercury in amalgams (in Hg-Iamp manufacturing) and melting behaviour of low-temperature alloys have been modelled. Provided that the thennochemical data is available simulations can be performed with any thennodynamic system. The calculation can be performed as an affinity study without a particular reactor model or with a specific reactor scheme.

O presente trabalho apresenta os resultados do estudo e aproveitamento de cinzas leves da queima de carvão mineral em termelétrica, como reforço para o Compósito de Matriz Metálica de cobre. Foram estudados diferentes percentuais de cinzas leves como reforço para o cobre, sendo misturados estes pós através de misturador “duplo v”, compactando os pós em diferentes pressões e sinterizando os corpos de prova obtidos pela compactação. A amostra sinterizada que apresentou a maior dureza entre todos os corpos de prova sinterizados, atingindo 89 HV, foi utilizada como base para a formulação e obtenção de novos corpos de prova, que foram estudados sob condições de moagem dos pós por moinho de bolas e moagem de alta energia. A fabricação do compósito seguiu os padrões industriais do processo de Metalurgia do Pó, como a mistura e moagem dos pós, compactação dos pós e sinterização em atmosfera controlada. Foi realizado o estudo das propriedades mecânicas do compósito formado por cobre e cinzas leves, que comprovou o aumento da dureza para 122 HV. Este trabalho proporciona uma nova aplicação para as cinzas leves, utilizando estes resíduos de usinas termoelétricas como matéria prima para reforço mecânico na composição de peças à base de cobre na indústria metalúrgica.
