The Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory, has electroslag melted a V-5Ti-5Cr alloy using a fused CaF2, flux. The alloy is a candidate for use in future fusion reactors. One objective of this research was to evaluate the feasibility of the electroslag melting process in separating simulated radioactive isotopes from the V alloy to demonstrate recyclability. Small amounts of Ca, Y, and Mn were added as surrogates for radioactive isotopes. Results showed that this vanadium alloy can be electroslag melted satisfactorily. The impurities added intentionally were removed or decreased successfully. Among the major alloying constituents, Cr was retained but there were some Ti losses. The latter may be controlled with process refinements. This research suggests that the electroslag melting process could be a suitable method for recycling V alloys after use in future fusion reactors, or for processing other reactive metal alloys with more immediate applications.

"As part of the preparations for the design of an underground repository for radioactive waste at Posiva’s Olkiluoto site on the west coast of Finland, there has been considerable site investigation work. Except the extensive surface based investigations, Posiva started in 2004 the construction of an underground characterisation facility termed the ‘ONKALO’. The ONKALO has now been completely excavated to the anticipated repository depth i.e. -430–450 m. The research conducted in the ONKALO gives further information on the bedrock and groundwater conditions of the final disposal site, as well as on the impact of the construction. The ONKALO provides an excellent opportunity to investigate the rock at tunnel scale, to conduct in-situ testing in rock, to develop excavation and final disposal techniques in realistic conditions. The ONKALO has aided in collecting the data needed, supported by a Preliminary Safety Assessment, for the application of the construction license that was submitted in the end of 2012. The target is to begin disposal operations in 2022. According to current plans, the final disposal would end in 2112 and the repository would be sealed up by 2120. The testing in the ONKALO still continues several years. This paper presents the current characterisation and research activities in the ONKALO. INTRODUCTIONAfter the Finnish Government's favourable policy decision in 2001, Posiva Oy, which is an expert organisation responsible for the final disposal of spent nuclear fuel of the owners in Finland, has focused further investigations at the Olkiluoto site, western Finland (Figure 1) and has started in 2004 the construction of an underground facility termed the ‘ONKALO’. The ONKALO is not a nuclear waste repository, but more than just an underground research laboratory URL – it is an underground rock characterisation facility. The ONKALO has now been completely excavated to the anticipated repository depth i.e. -430–450 m. In addition to facilitating bedrock research, the ONKALO also provides an opportunity to develop excavation techniques and final disposal techniques in realistic conditions. Later, the ONKALO facilities can be put into use when building and using the repository. The construction methods and materials have been selected in order not to jeopardise the long-term safety of the repository site. The findings of the ONKALO and other investigations will provide the knowledge needed for an application, supported by a Preliminary Safety Assessment, to construct a final repository for spent nuclear fuel at the site. Posiva has submitted an application for the construction licence for a disposal facility in the end of 2012. The target is to begin disposal operations in 2022 and the repository would be sealed up by 2120."

"INTRODUCTION Typical grinding electrification requirements are defined by high power, constant torque and slow speed. Dual pinion mills also include a need for tight tolerances in torque between the two motors, to avoid overloading any single motor. Standard induction (asynchronous) motors have often been used but only in combination with mechanical gearboxes (reducers), required to reduce process speed to the correct level for mill pinions. The gearbox introduces added system complexity, capital cost, maintenance and energy cost due to mechanical losses. SYNCHRONOUS AND ASYNCHRONOUS MOTORS Elimination of the gearbox requires a motor designed to operate at a very low speed (rpm). Traditionally, mill motor requirements were best served by synchronous motors. The benefits of synchronous motors include- • Higher Efficiency (no conductor losses in rotor) • Very high power at low speed • Flexible Power factor (leading or lagging) • Constant speed (not load dependent) • More accurate speed control Synchronous motor cost is higher due to construction complexity, need for exciter and excitation panel, brushes, brush lifters. Figure 1 represents the equivalent circuit for a synchronous motor.Asynchronous motors, also known as squirrel cage induction motors, are singly excited, per Figure 2, the resulting equivalency circuit is less complex and only in need of a single voltage source.Commonly, a DC voltage supply is connected to the rotor (both physically and electrically) via brushes. The DC voltage enables the production of flux in a single direction. The brushes are connected to rings. The slip rings encircle the rotor but are insulated from the rotor. The slip rings are connected to a rotor winding known as a field winding. On large motors, brushless exciters are often used. A brushless exciter is a small AC generator whose field circuits are mounted on the stator and armature circuits are mounted on the rotor shaft. The exciter generator’s 3-phase output is rectified to DC by a 3-phase rectifier (mounted on the shaft) and fed into the main DC field circuit. It is possible to adjust the field current on the main machine by controlling the small DC field current of the exciter generator (located on the stator). [1] Brushless synchronous motors are often preferred over the traditional brush design but introduce additional complexity to motor construction in the form of additional windings and rectifiers comprising the excitation circuit. It stands to reason that because of the additional complexity, a synchronous motor will be higher in cost than an equally rated asynchronous induction machine."

"The Red Mountain porphyry molybdenum deposit is situated in the Big Salmon Range, approximately 80 km east-northeast of Whitehorse, Yukon.Red Mountain is underlain by Paleozoic, argillaceous sedimentary rocks of the Yukon Cataclastic Complex, which have been intruded by a multi-phase mid-Cretaceous stock.Mineraliwtion, quartz stockwork, metal zonation, and an alteration assemblage characteristic of a porphyry molybdenum system have been superimposed on quartz monzonite porphyry and adjacent homfelsed sedimentary rocks. The property is situated within the rugged Big Salmon Range, 15 km east of the north-northwest-trending Teslin River. Red Mountain, at an elevation of 1702 m, consists of relatively steep, talus covered slopes with prominent gossanous bluffs marking the southeast flank. Relief on the property is 700 m, with tree-line at an elevation of 1450 m to 1500 m (Fig. 1)."

The Bureau of Mines tested & ground penetrating radar (GPR) system in the central Florida phosphate district. to determine the feasibility of utilizing GPR technology for subsurface cavity detection. The test area is located in karst topography where sinkhole development is prevalent. State regulations require subsurface drilling of damsites to identify underground anomalies; however, this method is not totally accurate in locating subsurface cavities that could lead to sinkhole development. An electromagnetic method of identifying anoma-lous subsurface conditions could reduce or eliminate the possibility of dam failure due to sinkhole development. The Bureau devised a GPR system that successfully penetrated over 50 ft of overburden and gave recognizable radar return signals characteristic of a rock-cavity interface.

"Sulphur deposition on the internal wall of a pipeline is caused by the temperature effect on the solubility of sulphur in the carrier fluid and is not due to particulate sulphur present. Deposition can be completely eliminated by proper insulation of the pipeline to prevent ""cold-spots"" and the resultant temperature gradient necessary for sulphur to precipitate from solution. Friction head losses for sulphur-condensate slurry systems are quite acceptable from a technical and economic standpoint and, in fact, are less than many present commercial slurry systems. Slurry transportation of sulphur in a hydrocarbon pipeline is a viable possibility and promises to have economic advantage over currently accepted transportation modes."

Mining in narrow veins is commonly applied for precious metals, generally carried out to extract gold in underground mines, due to the ore occurrence on narrow veins, mainly up to 2-meter large. The current work presents the implementation of the methodology in a zinc mine located in the state of Minas Gerais in Brazil. The Vazante Mine through the years has always carried out mining on stopes with a thickness larger than 3,5 meters, but nowadays due to the need to reduce the waste planned in its blocks, as well as increase the useful life of mine, mining has been implemented in blocks that are less than two meters. Given this, the challenge is to be able to carry out blasts that does not exceed the operational dilution required and does not generate an impact on recovery, as working with extremely heterogeneous stopes. This study seeks to correlate the main characteristics of stopes and its relationship with the results obtained in the execution of those blasts. Also, it proposes an analysis between the empirical data, and existing theoretical references, creating ideal mining parameters, such as minimum thickness, maximum height, and optimum timing in the blast plan. One of the main challenges for carrying out this mining method is the control of operational dilution, generally pointed out as the biggest difficulty for companies that adopt this methodology, due to the thickness of those stopes, any displacement can make it unfeasible, thus the technical level on carrying out the drilling and loading of these blocks must be impeccable, an understanding of the structural geology of the site is also essential for dilution control. The outcome will be a set of ideal parameters and mining methodology to guarantee the success in execution of these blocks, thus bringing a financial benefit to the company.

The soil crater formed by detonation of an explosive charge is of considerable military interest because of the common use of explosives to create soil obstacles. The soil crater is also an important piece of forensic evidence for the investigation of terrorist bombings. With recent advances in numerical codes, modeling and simulation of explosively-formed soil craters is becoming an attractive means of analyzing this phenomenon. Consequently, the need exists to better understand the relationship between soil properties and the resultant soil crater. An extensive database has been developed for the case of explosives detonated in or above in-situ soils of various types. However, in most cases, the soil properties were either not adequately quantified or the soil materials themselves varied such that the gross properties were poorly understood. A research program is underway to improve methods of relating soil crater dimensions to soil identification properties such as USCS classification, particle-size distributions, and Atterberg limits, as well as to soil composition properties such as density, moisture content, and volumes of solids, water, and air. As part of this effort, both explosive detonations conducted over well-controlled and well-documented soil backfills and companion numerical simulations were studied. This paper presents an overview of the effort.

Nonferrous metal recycling not only provides energy saving and environmental benefits but also is a significant factor in the supply of various types of metals used in our society. Recycling plays an important role in establishing the sustainability of materials. The total amount of recycled nonferrous metals by weight accounts for less than 5% but their value is larger than 50% compared to ferrous metal recycling which consists of about half of the total metal recycling in weight. This paper describes trends and typical achievements in nonferrous metal recycling and overviews the present and future of nonferrous metal recycling technology and business in Korea.

The high-shear colloidal mixer is generally recognised as the most efficient method of mixing cement based grouts. Only recently however has this technology been applied to the production of cemented rockfill (CRF) for use in underground mines in North America. Traditionally, paddle type mixers have been used to produce the cement based slurries required for the preparation of CRF. While considerable success has been achieved with these mixers, tremendous advantages are attained with the colloidal mixer. The combined effect of the highly efficient mixing action and the ability to mix low water/solids ratios, allows for reductions in the cement content for a given strength requirement. Cement can also be replaced by cheaper fillers such as flyash, resulting in further cost savings. Although large-scale dedicated CRF hatching plants are typical, there is a growing need for mobile plants capable of operating anywhere underground. The compact size and rapid hatching speed of high-shear colloidal mixers has allowed them to be incorporated into skid mounted systems capable of producing and discharging cement based slurries onto rockfill aggregate for the production of CRF. In many cases run-of-mine development waste can be used as CRF aggregate with these slurry plants thereby reducing the cost of waste rock removal. These relatively low cost portable plants have now allowed several mines to economically rccmer isolated pillars and realise positive returns on their investment.

Geology and oil-yield data are presented for a 58-square-mile area encompassing the U.S. Department of the Interior oil-shale leasing program tracts in the western Washakie Basin, Sweetwater County, Wyo. Lithology and oil yields of samples from three Bureau of Mines coreholes are evaluated and correlated with Kinney Rim surface sections measured and sampled by the U.S. Geological Survey. Minable sections of oil shale averaging up to 25 gallons of oil per ton crop out on Kinney Rim in the Laney Member of the Green River Formation. Thick oil-shale sections in the Laney Member that average 15 gallons per ton represent 155 million barrels of oil in place per square mile. In the lower part of the Green River Formation the Tipton Shale Member contains a 20-to 40-foot section averaging 15 gallons per ton. Beds of high-volatile C bituminous coal up to 6 feet thick are present in intertongued parts of the lower Green River Formation and upper Wasatch Formation.

The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is a U.S. Department of Energy research and development facility designed to demonstrate the permanent, safe disposal of U.S. defense-generated transuranic waste. The waste storage horizon is 655 m (2150 ft) below surface in bedded salt. To date the WIPP project has not emplaced any waste. There are three intake shafts used to supply air to the underground. All air is exhausted though a single return shaft. The total design airflow during normal operations is 200 m3/s (424,000 cfm). The ventilation system is designed to provide separate air splits to construction, experimental, and storage activities. Separation is achieved by isolating the storage circuit from the construction or experimental circuits with bulkheads. Any air leakage must be towards the storage area of the facility. Field studies have shown that the pressure differential necessary to maintain the correct leakage direction is susceptible to the effects of natural ventilation; therefore, extensive studies and analyses have been conducted to quantity the natural ventilation effects on the WIPP underground airflow system. A component of this work is a monitoring system designed to measure the air properties necessary for calculation of the natural ventilation pressure (NVP). This monitoring system consists of measuring dry bulb temperature, relative humidity, and barometric pressure at strategic locations on surface and underground. The psychrometric parameters of the air are measured every fifteen minutes. From these data, trends can be determined showing the impact of NVP on the ventilation system during diurnal variations in surface climate. Both summer and winter conditions have been studied. To the author's knowledge this is the first reported instance of automatic and continuous production of time and temperature variant NVPs. This paper describes the results of the initial monitoring study. INTRODUCTION The ventilation system at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) in Carlsbad, New Mexico, is designed to perform two distinct functions. First, it supports normal mine ventilation requirements complying with all state and federal mine regulations. Second, the system is designed to prevent an uncontrolled release of radioactive contaminants from the storage and transportation areas of the facility. Although a nuclear radiation release in the facility is considered unlikely, many special features are implemented in the ventilation system to prevent the possible spread of contamination. The facility is constructed with the waste transportation and storage areas separated from the mining and non-radioactive experimental areas. The ventilation system is designed such that air leakage is from the mining and experimental areas to the storage areas. Furthermore, radiation detectors are located throughout the storage and waste transportation areas underground and an exhaust filtration building is installed on surface to prevent the possible release of radiation to the environment. For over two years the underground ventilation system has been rigorously tested and balanced. It was during this period that the adverse effects of NVP were noticed and subsequently quantified. From extensive field studies and computer models, several mitigating features were designed and constructed and special operational procedures were implemented to control the impacts of NVP. To quantify more accurately the NVP at the WIPP, a continuous monitoring system was installed. This monitoring system consists of measuring dry bulb temperature, relative humidity, and barometric pressure every fifteen minutes at strategic locations on surface and underground. From this psychrometric data, the NVP is calculated. Fan operating pressures and flows and strategic differential pressures are recorded from the site Continuous Monitoring System (CMS). The monitoring system provides a means of evaluating how the ventilation system behaves in regard to climatic conditions and to judge the efficacy of the mitigating features and operational procedures. To the author's knowledge, continuous calculation of NVP as a function of time and surface temperature has not been previously reported. Overview of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant The U.S. Department of Energy determined that the plastic nature of bedded salt may provide the best solution to isolate transuranic (TRU) waste from the biosphere. Initial evaluations at the WIPP site began in 1974. In 1979, the United States Congress enacted Public Law 96-164 for the construction and development of the WIPP project. The mission of the WIPP is to demonstrate the safe, long-term disposal of TRU waste generated by the national defense programs of the United States. TRU waste is classified as a low to medium level waste. The waste is stored in drums and does not produce significant heat (not greater than 1 W per drum). The WIPP site is located approximately 47 km (29 miles) east of Carlsbad, New Mexico in the Chihuahuan Desert. The repository is located in the 630 m (2000 ft) thick Salado Formation. This Permian Basin salt deposit is about 225 million years old and appears to have been minimally disturbed by earthquake, faulting, and ground water activity since it was deposited. "The Turgeon Lake granite lies 5 miles north of Baie Johan Beetz, Quebec, at the eastern margin of the Grenville Province. The rocks are classed as granites, granulites, quartzites, biotite schists and gneisses, and amphibolites. The granite's uraniferous character is manifested by phosphuranylite, uraninite, and metamict .zircons associated with magnetite. Field anomalies occur in irregular pods, conformable with the tectonic foliation, in bands roughly paralleling sedimentary bedding. Associated features diagnostic of uraniferous granite are smoky quartz, brick-red feldspar, magnetite and a coarse to pegmatitic grain size. The granite is chemically and physically heterogeneous. Metasediment-granite contacts are diffuse or sharp, and usually conformable to bedding. The regional foliations within all rock types are coherent, and sedimentary structures are often preserved within both metasediments and granite. Autometasomatism probably was a strong granitization agent.A uranium reconcentration into fold-axial zones from original sediments which have been highly granitized during at least two phases of folding is suggested from the available data."

The past few years have seen a much greater concern about air pollution in this country. This concern has led to increased legislation restricting the discharge of many substances such as sulfur dioxide and particulate matter to the atmosphere. In the future, it is anticipated the present permissible emission levels will be lowered. Current and impending restrictions on the emission of sulfur dioxide have brought out the fact that there is a shortage of available low-sulfur fuel for power plants and industrial use which promises to have an economic impact on the nation's energy picture (1) The Pittsburg & Midway Coal Mining Co., under the sponsorship of the Office of Coal Research, has developed a process to produce a fuel capable of meeting the energy requirements of this nation (2) The process is called "The Pittsburg & Midway Solvent Refined Coal Process". The principle product from the process is Solvent Refined Coal which is an ashless, low-sulfur fuel with 16,000 BTU per pound regardless of the rank coal from which it is produced. The product can be burned as either a solid or a liquid fuel. The process appears to be economically more attractive than other methods of alleviating the pollution problems of this nation. In addition to reducing the air pollution caused by stack gases, the product produced is potentially useful as a source of electrode coke and electrode binder pitch, as a gas turbine fuel, in the production of metallurigical coke and pavement asphalt, and as the first step in the overall process to produce distillate fuels and pipeline gas (3).

This is a study of 58 fatal haulage accidents investigated by Federal coal-mine inspectors during the period January - June 1951. The information presented in this circular was obtained by analyzing fatal haulage accidents in 33 bituminous-coal producing counties representing 11 States. The physical conditions represent a cross section off producing coal beds. Mining and transportation methods vary, from those of small hand-loading mines to those of large modern mechanized operations. These data are thought to be representative of haulage conditions within the bituminous-coal mining industry and are submitted to follow up the Information Circular 7604 ?Analysis of Haulage Fatalities in Bituminous-Coal Mines - 1950.? Coal-mine haulage ranks second as a cause of coal-mine fatalities, and the problem of haulage safety is complex. It is subject to constant change and is comprised of numerous influencing variables, which are not always obvious. The solution to this problem will not come through the application of any standard formula or mechanical approach since the inherent factors are strongly influenced by the human equation, and the chain of circumstances is further affected by expediency.

Kanowna Belle Gold Mine is a deep, high-stress, sublevel open stoping mine located near Kalgoorlie. Seismic activity during the development cycle presented problems, including concerns regarding the exposure of personnel. A number of seismic management systems were developed and tested to monitor seismicity and control the risk. It was recognised that a dynamically capable reinforcement and support system was required to be installed as part of the development cycle to reduce the risk of exposure of the underground workforce to uncontrolled movement of rock. The performance of a new Garford Dynamically capable bolt was measured in tests performed by the Western Australian School of Mines (WASM) at their Kalgoorlie Dynamic Test Facility. Detailed descriptions of the facility and data processing were reported by Player, Villaescusa and Thompson (2004) and Thompson, Villaescusa and Player (2004). The development of the Garford Dynamic bolt is described and dynamic testing results are presented and evaluated. This bolt was implemented in the mining cycle following the testing program; the observed performance is described and assessed in this paper.

The Clean Water Act, as administered by the Environmental Protection Agency, has mandated industry, government and the public to comply with potentially conflicting and vague water quality statutes, regulations and guidelines. Universal regulatory strategies have been developed which have introduced and have created regulatory, compliance and institutional conflicts. Conflicts have been created because National water quality performance goals and design standards are vague, and, in many cases, cannot be scientifically justified. Because of regulatory technical requirements to define background and environmentally impacted water quality characteristics, the ability to achieve regulatory compliance is difficult. Difficult issues requiring resolutions includes but are not limited to site specific surface and ground water quality classification systems, water quality standards and guidelines, point and non point pollution sources etc. Because of these statutory and regulatory complexities, a confrontational regulatory system has been created as it relates to: - defining performance criteria in relation to design criteria; - resolving water quality statistical compliance conflicts; - defining laboratory precision requirements; - determining background groundwater characteristics; and - locating a representative point of compliance. Because of these complex regulatory issues, the ability to balance goals, needs and economics has not been achieved or in many cases has not been attempted, without legal intervention. A few examples illustrating where water and waste management compliance conflicts have been experienced.
