Modern smart phones include accelerometers based on MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical System) technology giving the possibility to measure both acceleration and orientation. The widespread use of such phones has driven technological development to such a degree that it is now possible to obtain a triaxial accelerometer unit, that also include signal conditioning and analogue to digital conversion, in a package smaller than 1 cm2 (1/2 sq.in) for a relatively low cost.

THERE are three active mines in the Chewelah-Colville district, the United Silver Copper near Chewelah, and the Old Dominion and the Chloride Queen near Colville. The Admiral near Valley is also doing development work. The Chewelah district is in the south central part of Stevens County in the Colville Valley. Chewelah, a thriving town of 1600 people, and the scene of operations of the Northwest Magnesite Co., is about the center of the district. It is situated in a farming community on the Spokane-Nelson branch of the Great Northern railway, about 65 miles north of Spokane. Only two or three of the mines in the district have been extensively developed, although many have been prospected. The general elevation of the valley, is about 1600 or 1700 ft., that of the mountain ranges on each side about 3000 to 4000 ft., with gentle slopes and rounded glaciated tops. Prospecting is often difficult because of much glacial debris.

Discussion J. de V. Lambrechts (Fellow): The author's paper is a brilliant follow-up of an earlier paper by Starfield and Dickson.1 I have no quarrel with Dr Starfield's computerization of a complex problem, but I do not believe that he is getting quite the right answers from his programme. My impression is that his predictions about wet bulb temperature increases in very deep mines are over optimistic; in other words, that it will be hotter than Dr Starfield predicts. This is putting my views in a nutshell. This is not the occasion on which to indulge in lengthy argument about the original paper by Starfield and Dickson, but the present paper is, after all, based directly on that earlier paper and if the one fails, the other cannot succeed. I did level certain criticisms at the first paper and cannot say that the authors' replies were very convincing. I do not think it is a sin to admit that I belong to the old school which believes in thorough field experimentation and practical trials and no amount of mathematical manipulation or physical theorizing, no matter how excellent, can make up for inadequate practical confirmation. This, as I see it, is still the crux of the matter. The original paper by Starfield and Dickson still rests on somewhat scanty practical evidence and I would be much happier if Dr Starfield's computer programme, based on the Starfield-Dickson model, had been checked against a large mass of observations in the practical mining situation. This is what both Wiles2 and myself3 had tried to do previously. What we lacked in mathematics and/or computer aids, I think the present paper by Dr Starfield lacks in practical substantiation. This is no condemnation of the author's paper which, taken by itself, is excellent but I think the final stage is still lacking, namely the bringing together of theory and empiricism in a manner acceptable to all. This may be wishful thinking on my part but I hope, within the next year or so, to come up with a modified Starfield-Dickson model in such a way that the computer answers will agree in the majority of cases with the few hundred field observations which are already on record. Hemp (Visitor): Dr Starfield's paper has very effectively rounded off one particular aspect of the general problem of heat flow in mines. The ease with which this computer programme can be used to calculate temperature increases in horizontal airways must lead to its wider use in ventilation planning and, in developing this rapid method, Dr Starfield has indeed rendered a valuable service to the mining industry. One could consider further instances of heat flow in airways in which the availability of a rapid computer method would be desirable, e.g. the flow of air down a shaft, where there is an increase in temperature due to adiabatic compression, as well as an increase in virgin rock temperature as the depth increases. However, this particular case would not present any new problems and would merely require an extension of the exisitng work. I should like in this contribution to talk about an aspect of environmental control in mines which, I think, will become more important in the future. It is well known that wet bulb temperatures are subject to fluctuations underground. In some instances, particularly in stopes, the fluctuations, both with time and position, can be considerable. The theoretical work which has been carried out on temperature increases has been aimed at the prediction of mean temperatures, and no account has been taken of fluctuations around this mean. It is questionable whether this approach will, on its own, be sufficient, particularly when temperature increases in stopes are considered. The fluctuations in air temperatures underground arise from two causes. The first of these would be the fluctuations in surface conditions, and here one could list random, diurnal and seasonal fluctuations. The second cause is the multitude of things which vary in a mine and here one could list variations in air flow quantity, sources of evaporation, heat transfer from pump and compressed air columns and, particularly in the stope, variations in air flow patterns. Fluctuations arising from surface temperature variations should be amenable to calculation, and here one envisages figures relating the decay of temperature variation with distance to factors such as air flow quantity. Fluctuations resulting from changes in the mine are perhaps more difficult to tackle theoretically and the best approach could well be to analyse underground observations. In this connection, there is a good case to be made for the increased use of statistical methods in the analysis of underground temperature measurements, and it might be of value to look at current air-conditioning practice. The southeastern shores of Great Slave lake present a curious anomaly in geographical and geological exploration, in that an area so large and important, and withal so comparatively accessible, should nevertheless have remained unexplored, unmapped, and indeed almost unknown, until quite recent" times On their return from the famous journey to the mouth of the Coppermine, the band of Indians with whom he travelled led Samuel Hearne across Slave lake. He was the first white man to see that great body of water and it is rather curious that it should have been seen first from the north rather than from the south. Hearne's account of the lake is vague, and he made no attempt ?to map the part through which he travelled. About 30 years later John Franklin, on his first journey to the Arctic, crossed the lake from the mouth of the Slave river to the Yellow Knife river. Franklin's maps show all of his route in accurate detail, except that part of it which lay through Slave lake. In 1833-34, Captain, afterwards Sir George, Back made the first exploration of the eastern end of the lake. Captain Back was then on his way to the Arctic coast by way of the Great Fish river, and his Indian guides led him through Great Slave lake by the route they had followed from time immemorial. This route, partly because of its directness, and partly because of its sheltered character, lay through the great mass of islands in the middle of the lake to the Talthei narrows, and thence along the sheltered north shore with its many coves and harbours. Pere Petitot made extensive journeys in Slave lake as well as other parts of the far north.

Typical of southwestern Wyoming are coal structures that dip from 4 degrees to 17 degrees. Those at the Reliance and Winton mines of the Union Pacific Coal Company average 9 1/2 degrees and 15 degrees, respectively, and dip almost directly to the west. By using a hoist for main haulage. a method of mining has been developed whereby four places are driven on the pitch of the seam. Slightly upgrade from the strike at intervals of 300 feet, a two-entry system is driven to the north and to the south. In both fields, which are non-gassy, an exhaust system of ventilation is used. Slope, manway, and lower or haulage entries are placed on the intake. Two air-courses and upper or breaking entries are placed on the return. A retreat system of mining is used exclusively. From the opening of its first coal mine, in the year 1868, until 1923, when the Joy Loader was introduced into the Union Pacific Coal Company's operations, slopes, aircourses and manways were driven by hand. Development work was conducted on the night shift or off shift, and the main hoist was used for haulage. The slope was driven down the pitch with crosscuts turned at intervals of 75 feet and entries at 230 feet. Connections to the workings above were made by driving up the pitch 75 feet. Mule haulage was used to furnish cars to the hand loaders driving planes up the pitch. A sheave was placed at the upper end of the plane with a 1 1/4¬ inch hemp rope doubling around it and having one end attached to the car and the other to the mule. The mule, pulling downhill, raised to the working face a small wooden car of one-ton capacity.

Due to the high energy consumption of milling, it is desirable to improve the efficiency of this process. One alternative to reduce energy and material consumption while optimising production yield in mill operation is through balanced design and selection of liners. Over-design of liners leads to increased life but at a cost to grinding performance, a relationship which to date has not been studied closely. This paper provides a description of this process of liner life cycle optimization and presents initial results from the first of two life cycles being studied for a 32 foot (ft) SAG mill. The use of commercially proven high resolution laser scanning based liner shape information provided by the MillMapper® software correlated with well controlled site surveys at various points in the liner life was used as the basis for comparison. The survey data was modelled in JKSimMet to provide direct comparisons of mill performance. This potentially provides a methodology for the design of liners that maintain a favourable shape for the majority of liner life, yielding desirable production parameters such as lower specific energy consumption and higher throughput, while at the same time maintaining practical liner life cycles.

The separation of fine mineral particles, especially using environmentally friendly approaches, is one of the main problems in the processing of low-grade ores and the re-processing of mining tailings. This work assesses the potential of biosurfactants as collectors in the flotation of ultrafine (smaller than 20 μm) particles of hematite and malachite. As biosurfactants, we test acetylated acidic (ac-ASL) and lactonic sophorolipids (ac-LSL). In addition, n-dodecyl-β-D-maltoside (DDM) is used as a model non-ionic alkyl disaccharide surfactant, and sodium oleate (NaOl) is used as a reference. The biosurfactants are characterized using surface tension and foam analysis. The interaction of the minerals with the surfactants is characterized using zeta potential, solubility, and single-mineral flotation. The collecting properties of the surfactants are compared for the ultrafine (− 20 μm) and coarser (38–90 μm) particle size in the two-mineral flotation of hematite and malachite against quartz. The ultrafine particle size improves the grade in the oleate flotation of hematite, as well as the grades in the DDM flotation of hematite and malachite, which is explained by the weak interactions of the metal oxides with fatty acids and DDM. At the same time, the flotation with ac-LSL and ac-ASL is highly tolerant to the ultrafine particle size. These results indicate that biosurfactants are an interesting alternative to conventional petroleum-based surfactants in the flotation of Fe and Cu oxides. Moreover, a proper selection of surfactants can help combat the problem of fines.

This presentation will describe the process by which the Quebrada Blanca (QB) copper project in northern Chile was financed. It will also show how a relatively junior mining company addressed the problems created by its inability to provide its share of the equity funding and the guarantees required by the project lenders. QB is located in the semi-arid Andean highlands of northern Chile, 170 kilometres southeast of the port of Iquique and 30 kilometres west of the border with Bolivia, at an altitude of about 4,300 metres (14,000 feet). Figure 1 depicts the project's location. The QB orebody is a secondarily enriched porphyry copper deposit containing reserves of 85 million metric tons grading 1.3 percent copper. Underlying the enriched zone is a significant primary ore zone containing several hundred million metric tons grading about 0.5 percent copper. In the late seventies and early eighties Falconbridge and its affiliates spent $20-30 million dollars exploring the deposit and conducting feasibility studies. For a variety of reasons they decided not to develop the property which was returned to its owners, Empresa Nacional de Mineria (ENAMI), which is a Chilean state mining corporation. In 1988 ENAMI announced its intention to privatize the property through a public bidding procedure.

Big River Zinc Corporation, located in Sauget, Illinois, operates a neutral leach residue circuit. The residue produced in the circuit is sold to lead smelters for subsequent recovery of valuable metals. A research program was initiated several years ago to find a means of treating the residue at Big River Zinc to recover the valuable metals. The Ausmelt submerged lance reactor was selected as the best alternative for the first step of the process. Pilot scale tests were conducted at Ausmelt's facilities in Melbourne, Australia. Separations were excellent. 99%+ of the Zn, Pb, Cd, and Ag contained in the residue reported to the oxide fume. 99%+ of the SiO2,, Fe, Mg, and Ca in the residue reported to the slag which passed the EPA TCLP test. Subsequent leaching of the oxide fumes and purification of the leach solutions using conventional procedures produced solUtions suitable for zinc electrowinning and an upgraded lead sulfate cake for sale.

The iron-ore ranges in the Lake Superior district are the liarquette in Michigan, Menominee and Gogebic in Michigan end Wisconsin, and the Vermilion, Mesabi, and Cuvuna in Minnesota. These ranges produce about 85 percent of the iron ore mined in the United States. Accident experience in connection with this production is better than that of the regions producing the remaining 15 percent. Production and shipments vary slightly from year to year but closely approximate each other over a period of years. During the 4-year period 1940 to 1943, inclusive, 323,667,599 long tons of iron ore was shipped from the Lake Superior district.4/ Michigan and Wisconsin shipped 65,386,608 tons, or 20.2 percent of the total, and employed approximately 15,000 men; Minnesota shipped 258,280,991 tons, or 79.8 percent of the total, and employed approximately 10,000 men. The tons produced per man employed is much, greater in Minnesota than in Michigan and Wisconsin owing to the large open-cut production in Minnesota.

INTRODUCTION New York City Water Supply—Background and History Since the 1840s New York City has been developing the largest, and perhaps, the best urban water supply and distribution system in the world in terms of quality and reliability. One of the engineering marvels of the modern world, the New York City water supply and distribution system serves a population of almost nine million, including residents in nearby Westchester, Putnam, Ulster, and Orange Counties of New York State. The average daily supplies presently are running at almost 60 m3/sec(about 1,350 million gallons per day). The watershed for the New York City water supply system, under the jurisdiction of the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP), consists of19 reservoirs and three controlled lakes, and covers an area of approximately5,000 square kilometers (about 2,000 square miles) north of New York City. The watershed total available storage capacity is about two billion cubic meters (560 billion gallons) and is divided into three reservoir systems: the Catskill and Delaware watersheds located West of the Hudson River; and the Croton watershed, located east of the Hudson River, see Figure 1. The first element of the system, the Croton Aqueduct, started operations in 1842.Through several updates and expansions, the present-day Croton system was in place by 1911, providing a potential maximum supply of about 15 m3/s (about 340 mgd). The system includes ten reservoirs and three controlled lakes. In the late 1800s, with the tremendous growth of the City, New York City water engineers began to look for additional sources. Between 1907 and 1929, the City acquired water rights and constructed a new 148 km (92 miles) Catskill aqueduct to convey water from the Ashokan Reservoir to the City. The Catskill system also included the construction of the Kensico and Hillview Reservoirs just north of the City,

In August 1996 a Microseismic Monitoring System developed by ISS International Limited was installed at the Pasminco Broken Hill Mine -Southern Cross area. The project aims were to:Assist in daily safety management in a mine environment which exhibits one of the highest occurrences of microseismic activity recorded in the Australian mining industry. Be used as a proactive tool in design of future development and stoping. The project to-date has been an unqualified success in achieving both goals. Consequently the system is being expanded from 6 to 14 monitoring sites.

"INTRODUCTION This report presents statistics of accidents at coke ovens in the United States during the calendar years as 1933, the twenty-first year for which data of this kind are available, 1913 being the first year for which accident reports were collected from the operating companies by the Bureau of Mines. The present report is presented in mimeograph form because insufficient funds are available for printing it. The first report of the Bureau of Mines that contained statistics of accidents for the coke-mining industry in the United States covered the two calendar years, 1913 and 1914. While the figures presented therein related both to beehive and by-product ovens, the original returns from the operating companies were not classified so as to permit the presentation of accident statistics for each class of ovens separately. Beginning with 1915, the accident reports from the operating companies have shown the general type of ovens to which the reports related; therefore, since that year, separate statistics for each of the two classes of ovens have been given in the Bureau's yearly reports of accidents at coke ovens.The coke-making industry in the United States established a safety record in 1933 almost equal in merit to that which it achieved in 1932, when the accident-frequency rate was the lowest and therefore the most favorable that the industry has known. Credit for the achievement is due almost entirely to companies operating byproduct ovens. (See table 8.)"

"The purpose of this paper is to review the evidence at hand concerning the earliest centuries of cast iron in Europe, from roughly 1400 A.D. until the second half of the sixteenth century. For the most part it is concerned with the relationship between two technologies which emerged first in China and then later appear in Western lands, gunpowder weapons and iron founding. We should not assume, as I hope to show later in this discussion, that weapons constituted the only product for which the iron founder had any market, but it is clearly true that attempts to produce weapons constituted the most severe technical challenge for the early founder. Firearms appear for the first time in Europe in the 1320s and develop into significant weapons on the field of battle by the end of the century. Theirs is a complex history, subject neither to easy summary treatment nor to simplified models of development. I hope to be able, through the analysis of the evidence concerning cast iron, to show that one important strand in the fabric of gunpowder's history concerns the materials from which cannon could be made. This question is subject to a number of shades of meaning, because ""cannon"" can be made for many purposes under a profusion of different names, and under sharply varying conditions of use. As a result, the question of materials is frequently really a question of competing materials, and involves a complex set of factors, of which production costs and the ultimate safety of the user seem the most important. Judged in this manner cast iron was an important but unsatisfactory metal for weapons purposes until 1543, at which time English founders learned to make iron muzzle-loading cannon which could rival bronze ordnance in most important performance criteria, but which cost much less to produce. With that event, the history of cast iron and the history of weapons entered into the close relationship that persisted until the advent of rifled artillery made of steel in the middle of the nineteenth century."

The physical properties of an ore body require determination for virtually all mining projects, new and existing. The extent and regularity of such determinations being subject to the size and homogeneity of the orebody. Such properties have an impact at the design stage of new plants, with respect to equipment specification, and thus effects capital costs; and also impacts on the operating costs of new and existing plants, with respect to power consumption, production levels and part replacements. All of these can severely alter the bottom line and can be the determining factor in the economic viability of many projects. This paper examines some of the most common properties that are measured, the procedures utilised in determining these properties, and their variability under conditions of reproducibil­ity, and to a lesser extent repeatability. The properties looked at were Impact Crushing Work Index, Abrasion Index, Bond Rod Mill Work Index and Bond Ball Mill Work Index. A number of testing laboratories throughout Australia and the US were utilised in the survey. The results showed up some interesting and important features of the procedures used, all of which have become accepted industry standards, and which had varying effects on the final result. Tests such as the rod and ball mill indices would appear to have reasonably robust procedures which allowed for the determinations of the respective index without the introduction of significant variations, although there were indications that variations could occur. The other tests gave a sufficiently different picture to be able to suggest that an argument could be made for a more intensive investigation to be undertaken, with the possible outcome that a modified test procedure or an alternative test is required.

The Bureau of Mines is investigating possible applications of geophysics to monitor leachate during in situ mining. Tomographic reconstruc-tion of seismic or electromagnetic crosshole data appears applicable. The tomographic program BOMTOM (Bureau of Mines tomography) was written and then used to investigate reconstructions with synthetic travel time data. The calculations confirmed that without constraints, crosshole data do not provide unique solutions. The solution is not determined solely by the data, but is also influenced by the velocity guesses starting the iterative solution procedure. The effectiveness of constraints in combatting nonuniqueness was examined. The requirement that the velocity not vary laterally at the top and bottom of the pixel grid was effective. This constraint is realistic when the top and bottom of the grid represent dry and saturated re-gions, respectively. Limiting the maximum velocity improved reconstructions, but may not be applicable in practice. BOMTOM uses the simultaneous iterative reconstruction technique (SIRT) with straight ray paths. The program is efficient in use of memory, and can be run on a personal computer. A source code in FORTRAN is listed. A source code in BASICA and compiled executable codes in both languages are available from the Bureau's Twin Cities (MN) Research Center.

In a thin slab casting process, control of fluid flow in mold is particularly difficult due to the high casting speed and large aspect ratio of the mold and the understanding of the fluid flow motion as well as heat transfer in mold is regarded as the most important information because the melt delivery is directly related to the problems of shell growth nonuniformity, surface turbulence and mold powder entrapment. A mathematical model has been developed for the coupled analysis of fluid flow, heat transfer and solidification in funnel type mold using finite volume method based on a body fitted coordinate and the characteristics of the transport phenomena in the mold of thin slab caster were analyzed by numerical simulation. As a result of simulation, the basic flow pattern is characterized as four large recirculations and two small eddies near the narrow faces of mold, which is somewhat different from that of parallel type mold or other conventional slab caster. The heat transfer model accurately predicted the mold positions susceptible to cracking as a result of thermal stress and the predicted shell thickness shows good agreements with the measured shell thickness on breakout products. We also investigated the influences of some operation parameters such as casting speed, nozzle type, submerging depth and mold material on fluid flow, heat transfer and distribution of solidifying shell and various information for the determination of optimal operating conditions were obtained.

In mineral resources, geologic and mining data are acquired, processed, analysed, interpreted and modelled, eventually serving as basis to generate predictions and production plans. This is a complex process, and the resulting predictions are impacted by uncertainties related to the data itself and the processing methods and techniques used. They are also impacted by the subjective decisions made by the modeler(s) at each step of the way. Knowledge, biases, skills, and prior experience come into play in the long mineral resource evaluation development workflow. It is meaningless to discuss uncertainties without evaluating the associated risks that those uncertainties imply. It is important to quantify and assess uncertainty, and to evaluate and mitigate its consequences. This paper discusses (1) conceptual and practical sources of uncertainty; (2) the utopia of an “objective” uncertainty; and (3) the quantification and public reporting of uncertainty using geostatistical conditional simulations. The objective of this paper is to postulate that the industry is running out of reasons and excuses to ignore uncertainty and risk in project evaluation. This is done in two parts, with this, the first one, presenting a more conceptual discussion. Part 2 will present case studies from different types of mining projects and operations showcasing the impact that risk assessments can have in a mining project.

Once cemented paste backfill (CPB) is transferred and placed into a mine stope, various coupled mechanisms will take place in the CPB material or structure. It will be subjected to strong coupled thermal (T), hydraulic (H), mechanical (M), and chemical (C) processes. Field studies have shown that the in-situ properties and performance of CPB differ from those obtained in the laboratory. This is mainly due to effects of the aforementioned coupled THMC mechanisms or processes. For a reliable and cost-effective design of a CPB structure and barricade, it is crucial to have a proper understanding of the THMC behaviour and evolution of CPB. Also, it is important to consider the effect of coupled THMC factors (e.g., self-weight pressure, drained/undrained and thermal conditions, pore pressure) while curing the CPB specimens. For this purpose, a laboratory setup is developed to investigate the properties of CPB materials. The setup is capable of curing CPB specimens (10 cm in diameter and 20 cm in height) under controlled vertical pressure (curing under stress) and various coupled THMC conditions, while continuously monitoring the evolution of total stress, pore pressure, suction, temperature, water drainage, chemical composition of the pore water and vertical deformation. Once the required curing time is achieved, the specimen can be extracted and then subjected to experimental tests of interest, such as those that determine the Unconfined Compressive Strength (UCS), shear strength parameters, saturated hydraulic conductivity and thermal properties. In this paper, we describe the developed experimental setup and present some results of the THMC behaviour of CPB under various curing stresses and rates of backfilling. The obtained results show that the THMC properties of CPB are strongly coupled due to several mechanisms, such as self-weight pressure, heat of hydration and suction development as a result of self-desiccation. The findings can assist researchers and practitioners to better understand THMC behaviour and thus design more cost-effective CPB structures.

The article discusses the possibility of automation in refurbishment processes of social dwelling built from 1950 to 1970. These massively produced buildings were mostly designed prior to the law enforcement regarding thermal insulation or accessibility. Nowadays, many of these buildings are being retrofitted. The article focuses on the works in the external envelope. The task of renewing the whole social building stock is big and it requires a systematic process that facilitates a rapid upgrading, without neglecting the specific situation of each case. How could an automatic refurbishment process of these buildings be defined? The process should start with the data collection of the building and the creation of a 3D model using software such as BIM. The project, drafted in 3D, should facilitate the manufacture of building elements by robotics. In turn, it should be noted that during the assembly at the site, the pieces must be fixed quickly and efficiently. Is it possible to implement an automated process for the refurbishment of apartments built in the second half of the twentieth century? To approach the answer, a virtual refurbishment project is performed. The article focuses on the rehabilitation of the building envelope. Furthermore, it gives special attention to the double skin facade. It is well known that a second skin in this type of building can be an element that integrates several functions. Finally, needless to say that refurbishment of residential buildings is a need in our society. By extending its life cycle, robotic refurbishment provides more favorable socioeconomic and environmental capabilities than the sole construction of new buildings.
