In heap leaching, the oxidative dissolution of value minerals encapsulated deep within large particles cannot be fully understood on the basis of the bulk solution conditions relative to variable solution conditions near the mineral surface. In the present study, the diffusion of the oxidising species through inner particle pores is simulated in a model apparatus that separates an inert platinum electrode under controlled reduction potential from the bulk solution through narrow pores of varying length. The Cu-NH3 system was selected as a model system and Cu(II)/Cu (I) as the redox couple of interest. Platinum probes inserted in the pores allowed the measurement of varying redox potentials along the pore length. Results showed that in a 10 mm pore, there exists a narrow (0.5 mm) zone near the reduction surface that is depleted of the oxidant and in which its supply is strongly diffusion limited, even if it is in abundance in the bulk solution. The consistent presence of this narrow diffusion region across all experimental results indicated that the transportation of the reduced species away from the reaction surface had the most significant influence on the potential variations within the pore. This was further supported by the minimal effect of varying concentrations of both Cu(II) and dissolved oxygen on the solution potential within this region.

"By newly developed ICP method, trace amounts of As(III), As(V) .,Sb(III) and Sb(V) were precisely determined within accuracy of sub ng/ml. As(III) and Sb(III) were separated from As(V) and Sb(V) by extracting into ·xylene as diethyldithiocarbamate complexes using diethylammonium diethyldithiocarbamate (DDDC), and then back-extracted into nitric acid for a quantitative determiruition by ICP-AES equipped with hydridegeneration system The recoveries of As(III) and Sb(III) were satisfactory throughout the extraction with 0.04mol/l DDDC in xylene from lmol/l hydrochloric acid solution and the back-extraction with 7 mol/l nitric acid. As(V) and Sb(V) were reduced to As(III) and Sb(III) by ascorbic acid and potassium iodide, and their quantities were determined as mentioned above. The detection limits were found to be 0.58ng/ml for As(III), 0.63ng/ml for Sb(III) using 50ml of a sample. The proposed method was applied to analysis of the real sample.Introduction In drain, arsenic(AS) concentration is prescribed below 0.lmg/l, so As must be removed. As is existed at .the form of As(III) or As(V) in solution. For t1Jeir difference of chemic;µ property, it is not easy to remove As in solution. So it is an urgent necessity to develop for determining concentration of As(III) and As(V). Antimony( Sb) has resemblance .chemical property to As. So Sb was experimented the same as As.The separation and determination of As(III) and As(V) have been carried out using several methods, such as ICP after copreclpitating separation, HPLC, direct hydride generation atomic absorption. However these methods have some problems. One of main problems is that HPLC and direct hydride generation atomic absorption methods are influenced by coexisting elements."

A busca por redução de peso e maior segurança dos veículos vem impulsionando a obtenção de novos aços de elevado desempenho. Os aços bifásicos vêm sendo desenvolvidos e utilizados devido a sua considerável resistência mecânica e boa conformabilidade. No presente trabalho foram realizados os recozimentos intercríticos direto e contínuo em um aço de composição 0,121%C-0,499%Si-1,58%Mn-0,021%Cr com o objetivo de avaliar os efeitos do tempo e temperatura de intercrítica na dureza da ferrita e do constituinte MA (martensita e austenita retida). A avaliação dos resultados foi realizada por meio de microscopia óptica, microscopia eletrônica de varredura e ensaios de ultramicrodureza. Foi observada a influência do tempo e da temperatura na morfologia e na quantidade de constituintes formados. Também foram verificados diferentes valores de dureza nos constituintes e ainda em distintas regiões dos grãos de ferrita. Os resultados indicaram maiores durezas para regiões próximas da interface ferrita/martensita e diminuição de dureza do constituinte MA e aumento dos valores na ferrita com a elevação do tempo.

Over the last few years at Glencore’s Mount Isa Copper Operations (MICO) mining conditions have become increasingly challenging through lower head grades and higher work indices. MICO has had great success improving operating efficiencies and increasing productivity through focusing on technology, innovation and operational discipline. The recent implementation of the Mine Site Technologies (MST) ImPact System has supported the continued transformation of the MICO operations through improved personnel safety and direct measurement of productivity. The ImPact System has implemented new safety systems such as the heavy vehicle proximity detection system, underground personnel tracking system and emergency evacuation dashboards improving the overall safety of the workforce. The ImPact System has facilitated productivity improvements via real-time equipment and personnel monitoring, and the implementation of exception reporting (personnel productivity), KPI reports and production dashboards, and transparent reports highlighting developing maintenance issues.This paper discusses the components of the ImPact System, the current installation at MICO, and critically analyses the implementation processes and right sizing of the system to meet the needs of the business today and into the future.CITATION:Bullock, J, Kent, D and Wilkinson, M, 2017. The textures produced in zirconium by cold and hot rolling, and by recrystallization above and below the transformation temperature were determined. Thermal expansivities were measured in the thickness, transverse, and rolling directions of preferentially oriented zirconium and were correlated with the texture scatter in these directions. REVIOUS investigations have indicated that minor differences between hexagonal close-packed metals of similar axial ratio may appear with respect to the textures produced both on cold rolling and on subsequent recrystallization. In the case of magnesium, beryllium, and titanium, metals of axial ratio similar to that of zirconium, the ideal orientations produced by rolling are fundamentally the same, although marked variance is reported in the degree and type of scatter about the mean orientation; in those instances where recrystallization textures were observed, they were reported to be similar to the rolling textures. Measurement of the anisot-ropy of thermal expansion of both rolled and re-crystallized zirconium could not be correlated satisfactorily with the textures reported for the above metals, and therefore a study was made of the preferred orientations produced in zirconium. Reported below are the textures produced in zirconium by cold and hot rolling, and recrystallization above and below the transformation temperature, together with the results of thermal expansion measurements. Determination of Preferred Orientation Two types of zirconium were investigated: 1— "crystal bar" zirconium obtained from the Foote Mineral Co., produced by the thermal decomposition of zirconium tetraiodide, and 2—zirconium ingot obtained from the Bureau of Mines prepared by melting sponge zirconium in a graphite resistor vacuum furnace in a graphite crucible. The major impurities present in the two materials used are listed in Table I. Several of the pole figures were later checked with 0.03 pct hafnium crystal bar material and the results were identical with those to be shown for the 1.5 pct hafnium material. The materials were cold rolled to 0.014 in. in thickness as shown in Table 11. Specimens were cut from the 0.014 in. thick rolled sheets and etched to thicknesses of 0.002 to 0.010 in. Such specimens were used for exposures up to a 50' to 60" angle between the beam and plane of the specimen; for higher angles a wire shape, similar to that described by Bakarian,' was formed on an end of the original 0.014 in. sheet. A fine-bladed abrasive cut-off wheel was used to slot the sheet and to form the cylindrical cross-section. The wire shaped ends were then etched to 0.006 to 0.010 in. in diam. Although absorption of X-rays in the wire-shaped specimens does not vary with angle of rotation, the line width around the diffraction rings was not uniform, because the wire was narrower than the X-ray beam, and this condition caused some uncertainty in the estimation of azimuthal intensities. Furthermore, scanning was not practicable with this type of specimen so that spottiness of the rings due to large grain size was excessive for specimens which had been heated above about 650°C. Nevertheless, satisfactory information could be obtained for high angle exposures from the negatives by the use of both types of specimens. Transmission Laue photograms were taken using unfiltered molybdenum radiation (47.5 kv, 18 ma) and a 0.025 in. pinhole. With the film 8 cm from a 0.005 in. thick specimen exposures of about 30 min were adequate. For specimens with a coarse grain size, a device that scanned about 0.15 sq in. of sheet surface was used. An attempt was made to plot the pole figures by use of an X-ray spectrometer as described by Norton.' However, for the particular technique used, the intensity variations obtained were not considered definite enough to give reliable results, especially for the large grained recrystallized and transformed specimens. This method was therefore abandoned in favor of the standard photographic method. Nine exposures were taken of each specimen: seven exposures with the beam perpendicular to the rolling direction and at 0°, 10°, 20°, 35", 50°, 65", and 80" to the transverse direction, and two exposures with the beam perpendicular to the transverse direction and at 60" and 80" to the rolling direction. Additional exposures were then made where necessary. The intensity variations of the diffraction rings were estimated by eye. It was usually possible to estimate 3 degrees of intensity from the photograms but in some cases 2, 4, or 5 degrees were estimated. Laboratory tests were conducted at the U.S. Bureau of Mines to determine the effects of roof-bolt drilling parameters on penetration rate in sandstone using tungsten carbide alloy (WC-Co) and polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) drill bits. During the tests, water pressure of 552 kPa was found to be adequate for removing the cuttings from the tops of drill holes. Test results show that for both types of bits, penetration rate increased when thrust was raised from 227 to 1,588 kg. When water pressure rose from 554± 120 to 1,344±350 kPa, the effect on penetration rate was not significantly different. Conventional WC-Co bits became dull when one or two holes were drilled, after which the penetration rate dropped dramatically. Microscopic examination shows that the cutting edges of PDC bits also become somewhat dull, but at a much lesser rate than WC-Co tips. Microscopic examination also reveals that the wear mechanism of WC-Co and PDC bits is quite different, which may explain the longer life of the PDC bits.

The Bureau of Mines investigated a simultaneous elutriation and flotation technique for separating polyethylene terephthalate (PET) from polyvinylchloride (PVC). The Tuscaloosa Research Center, through a cooperative agreement with a recycling company, devised an elutriation-flotation method for beneficiating the mixed heavy plastics portion of municipal solid wastes which is composed of polystyrene (PS), PET, and PVC. A sodium carbonate brine was used to remove the lighter PS from the heavier PET and PVC. Over 98 pct of the PS was recovered in a high purity PS concentrate containing 99.7 pct PS, The remaining PET and PVC mixture was washed to remove the brine salts that would be harmful to the flotation process. The clean PET and PVC mixture was conditioned in a solution of 45 g/t gelatine and floated in a short (l-m) column flotation cell in an upward flow of water. In a single flotation step, over 75 pct of the PET was recovered in a high purity product containing 99.8 pct PET. The bubbles attached to the PET lowered the effective density of the PET-bubble agglomerate and allowed successful separation of these agglomerates from the PVC plastic pieces. This method separated two-thirds of the mixed plastics fraction into high purity PS and PET products suitable for recycling and left only one-third of the plastics in the mixed plastics product.

The discovery of the Kalamazoo (Arizona) ore body was a comedy of errors and coincidences and luck -as most discoveries probably are. The story began in early 1965 when Quintana Petroleum decided to diversify from petroleum into minerals and decided to do this by the route of minerals exploration. Quintana Petroleum is owned by the Cullen family of Houston and has Geen successful over the years in discovering oilfields. In 1965, the president and general manager was Corbin J. Robertson, son-in-law of Harry Cullen, founder of the company and a famous Texas wildcatter. But, in 1965, Quintana's financial advisors suggested that the company go into several mineral commodities, including copper, with Tucson, AZ, as the jumping-off point for copper exploration, and with a geological consultant (me) as the point man. The stage was now set! (See Fig. 1, location map of the San Manuel District, Arizona.)

Effects of variations in carbon content and micro-structure on the stress-rupture properties of a liquid-phase-sirztered, Izeut-resistunt alloy were studied. Using the powder rnetallurgy technique, specimens could be produced having stress-rupture profierties equivalent to or better than those of the alloy in wrought form. In addition, sintered specimens were easily hot worked even when carbon contents were as high as I pct. Correlations between stress-rupture properties and micro structure were obtained in some cases. IT is well known that many alloys used in high-temperature service are quite complex both from the standpoint of chemical composition and microstruc-ture. During the development of these alloys their complexity has in some cases led to treatment schedules which, while practical, often do not fully utilize available alloying elements. For example, in some alloys, massive carbides that form during ingot practice may never be dissolved by reasonable solution treatments and therefore are unavailable for subsequent precipitation hardening, Ref. 1. This investigation was undertaken to determine whether the powder metallurgy method of consolidation might provide distinct advantages over the conventional melting method. First, segregation of alloying elements might be eliminated or reduced and thus a more efficient use of these elements obtained. Second, the structures produced in powder specimens might differ considerably from those normally seen in castings, which would perhaps result in better response to subsequent mechanical or thermal treatments. If these results could be achieved, it was felt that both forgeability and stress-rupture properties might be improved. The alloy used in this investigation was S-816 produced by powder metallurgy methods. The influence of carbon content over the range of 0.1 to 1.0 wt pct was studied for the alloy in the as-sintered condition and after three additional treatments involving heat treatment, hot swaging, and combinations thereof. EXPERIMENTAL Standard S-816 has the composition shown in Table I. It is a cobalt-base alloy having a nominal carbon content of 0.4 pct and is classified as a precipitation-hardening alloy. This alloy was chosen because it is representative of a class of heat-resistant alloys and because adequate information was available concerning its response to various treatments and its subsequent properties. For this study, -100 mesh alloy powder having essentially the same composition as shown in Table I but without the 0.4 pct C was used. Desired carbon variations, achieved by wet mixing the alloy powder with graphite, ranged from 0.1 to 1.0 wt pct. Specimens were hydrostatically pressed and then sintered in vacuum by slowly heating until incipient melting was observed. Sintering this way gave a liquid phase in the interstices of the powder particles and achieved reasonably high densities. The average density of as-sintered specimens was about 95 pct of wrought alloy density. In order to obtain various microstructures, some specimens were heat treated (solution treated for 24 hr at 2150°F, water quenched; aged 16 hr at 1400°F, air cooled); others were hot swaged at 2150 o F (50 pct reduction in area), while still others were hot swaged (50 pct reduction in area) and then given the above heat treatment. "Following the depletion of nickel sulfide ores, laterites are considered as one of the main sources for producing nickel and cobalt. One of the primary steps in pyrometallurgical extraction of nickel from laterites involves partial reduction of the ore at temperatures below 1000°C. Studying the kinetics of laterite reduction provides valuable information on reducibility of nickel laterites using coal as a reductant. The present study investigates the reduction behavior of a nickel laterite by thermal gravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. Non-isothermal reduction tests and X-ray diffraction analysis were performed to find the main reactions that occur during the process. The kinetic parameters were calculated by Coats-Redfern method. The general model of simple reaction f(a)=(1-a)n was used for calculating kinetic parameters.INTRODUCTION Nickel (Ni) naturally occurs in the form of sulfide and laterite ores. Laterite ores are mainly available in tropical regions. Weathering phenomena during millions of years has led to the formation of several layers with specific mineralogy (Butt & Cluzel, 2013). The three main layers downward are limonite, smectite, and saprolite (Crundwell et al., 2011). Although laterites are the most available nickel ore resource (70%), their share in the overall Ni production is limited to 40% (Crundwell et al., 2011). The main reasons for not materializing the full potential of laterites are as follows (Ray et al., 1985): •,Laterite ores contain high water content (free and combined) which in turn results in high energy consumption of the extraction process. •,As Ni is present in the form of solid solution in laterites, physical upgrading methods such as flotation are not effective in increasing the Ni content before the extraction process. •,Extracting Ni from sulfide ores involve exothermic reactions which are beneficial due to decreasing the overall energy requirement of the process, however there is not efficient release of energy in the process of extracting Ni from laterite ores."

“Plutonic-related” gold deposits in Interior and SW Alaska (Tintina Gold Belt) vary significantly in size, grade, vein/deposit morphology, depth of emplacement, distance from causative pluton and metal association. Metal associations such as Au-Bi and Au-As-(Sb-Hg) are a good empirical indicator of depth of emplacement and distance from causative pluton and have been used successfully in exploration. Results from a variety of analytical techniques also suggest a phenomenological cause for these metal associations, e.g. gold and bismuth have linked metallogenesis at high temperatures and thus are best correlated at deposits that are deep and/or close to causative intrusions.

A helicopter-mounted lake-sediment and lake-water survey was carried out over Grenville rooks in the Renfrew area (parts of Renfrew and Lanark counties) during four days of October, 1975. In the course of this survey. 1150 square kilometers were covered, with 246 lake-sediment and 276 lake -water samples collected from every body of water on which the helicopter could land. Sample sites, which averaged one per 4.6 square kilometers, included lakes, ponds, beaver ponds, swamps and marshes. Lake-sediment samples were taken using a G.S.C. sampler. Waters were collected directly into polyethylene bottles. At each sample site , surface and bottom-water pH, dissolved oxygen content, conductivity and temperature were measured using a Martel. Water Quality Analyzer. The lake sediments were air dried and then ball milled to pass a minus 80-mesh sieve. Lake sediments were analyzed for U by delayed neutron activation and for Mo, Cu, Zn, Pb, Fe, Mn, Ni and Co by atomic absorption techniques. The organic content of the sediments was determined by loss on ignition at 450 °C. Lake waters were acidified with nitric acid on the day of collection. The U content of the water s was determined by fluorometry; the Cu, Zn, Pb, Fe, Mn , Ni and Co contents of the waters were determined by solvent extraction - atomic absorption techniques. A close relationship was found between bodies of granitic, syenitic and pegmatitic bedrock and elevated U levels in the lake sediments. The Hurd Lake and White Lake granitic intrusive were encompassed by an annulus of higher U activity. Field inspection revealed that the U concentrations occur within a zone which may represent a contact metamorphic aureole. Within these complexes, anomalous concentrations of U appear to be associated with Mo. Information derived from the lake-water data reinforces the geochemical distributions outlined by the lake-sediment survey . This survey was carried out in order to develop optimum sampling and analytical procedures for geochemical reconnaissance of the Grenville Province that may be carried out under the auspices of the Uranium Reconnaissance Program.

Vacuum carburising with pre-nitriding (PreNitLPC® technology) involves feeding ammonia during the charge heating stage before carburising. The purpose is to restrict the growth of grain in the surface layer of the carburised steel. The article presents the influence of nitrogen on restricting austenite grain growth during vacuum carburising and on mechanical properties (fatigue strength, impact resistance) of layers that underwent such treatment in comparison with traditional carburising methods.

Temperature, microstructure and dimensions are the main material parameters to be controlled during hot rolling of steel. Although thermal mathematical models have long been developed and applied for hot strip rolling, each Hot Strip Mill (HSM) must have its own model adapted to its facilities. Thus, a mathematical model for temperature evolution during rough rolling has been developed for the Usiminas HSM at Ipatinga Plant. The model achieved a high level of accuracy, which was assessed by comparing measured values of temperature at the hot strip mill entry with the calculated ones, the difference ranging from 9°C to 17°C. Application examples have shown that the slab can be occasionally stopped before start of rolling for as long as a couple of minutes without compromising its further processing. On the other hand, if the transfer bar stops after rough rolling even for short time, further processing in the HSM can be hindered, due to excessive temperature drop. In case of such abnormal line stop, the model can be used as a tool for decision-making to either continuing the planned rolling schedule or to changing the route, thus improving the overall rolling process.

"The Indianapolis Deep Rock Tunnel Connector (DRTC)—first in a vast network of storm water storage tunnels below Indiana, USA—was a wildly successful endeavor. Crews for the Shea/Kiewit JV drove a 6.2 m Robbins Main Beam TBM to world record rates. The machine achieved 124.9 m/day, 515.1 m/week, and 1,754 m/month in limestone and dolomite rock. The advance rates can be attributed to many factors including ground conditions and knowledgeable crew, but continuous conveyors are also of key importance. The novel conveyor system, manufactured by The Robbins Company, enabled continuous tunneling in a difficult layout that included two 90-degree curves and two S-curves. Spanning 11,777 m in its longest iteration, the system included nine booster drives plus a main drive. A vertical belt moved muck up the 76 m deep shaft to a radial stacker for temporary storage. The system, one of the most complex in North America and the first to operate in 90-degree curves, made swift tunneling possible. This paper will examine the world-class tunneling done at the Indianapolis DRTC and the role of continuous conveyance in reaching high advance rates. The logistics of the system will also be examined as it could apply to future tunneling projects with similarly complex layouts. INTRODUCTION The Indianapolis Deep Rock Tunnel Connector (DRTC) is the first phase of a nearly 28-mile long network of deep rock tunnels being built 76 m beneath the City of Indianapolis, Indiana by Citizens Energy Group. The Deep Rock Tunnel Connector (DRTC) Project is a 12.2 km, 5.5 m diameter tunnel constructed by S-K JV, a joint venture between J.F. Shea Construction and Kiewit Infrastructure Co. The tunnel is a $179 million project and is the first segment and southernmost portion of a deep, large diameter conveyance and storage tunnel system to provide overflow relief during wet weather events. The project is estimated to be completed in 2017 and will initially deliver 204,000 cubic meters of the planned 1 million cubic meters of CSO storage for treatment, as well as provide future connections to other tunnels in the overall system (see Figure 1)."

Part 5, the last of this series, deals with the theoretical confirmation and application of results developed in parts 1 and 2. The bulk-sampling variances of Hassialis and Kassel and Guy are compared with those in part 2, both as to formulation and as applied to ores and coal. The results provide confirmation for much of the development in part 2. Examples are presented for determining the reliability of bulk samples with respect to various measurable characteristics. These characteristics include, for example, assays for elements or compounds and particle surface area. The bulk samples considered consist either of a given weight, a given volume, or a given number of particles. In addition to problems of sample reliability, some of these examples may also be applicable to quality control. Several possible applications of results developed in parts 1 and 2 are outlined. These include tests for random data, degree-of-mixing indices, and particle-fineness indices.

IN the last decade one of our oldest and largest non-metallic metallic mineral industries has been the subject of persistent technical research, the results of which are another example of the benefits following the systematic application of scientific principles. The consequent improvement in the technique of phosphate recovery represents the greatest material advance in the industry since the discovery of phosphate in Florida in 1881. Moreover, these successes have stimulated interest and development in numerous other nonmetallic industries. Strange as it may seem, and despite the fact that the phosphate deposits of Giles County, Tennessee, together with those of Polk and Hillsborough Counties, Florida, have yielded more than 50,000,000 long tons in the last twenty years, the mineralogy of phosphates has been given scarcely any space in our technical literature. For many years it was the general consensus that these so-called phosphate rocks represented a physical mixture composed principally of tri-calcium phosphate, together with smaller quantities of calcium carbonate, calcium fluoride, iron phosphate, aluminum phosphate and other less important constituents. More recent investigations, however, led to the conclusion that these phosphates really represent a complex mineral in which calcium, iron, aluminum, phosphorus pentoxide, carbon dioxide, and fluorine all form a definite part of the molecule. At San Manuel, AZ, Magma Metals Co. operates an Outokumpu flash furnace, four Peirce-Smith converters and two anode casting wheels that are supported by six anode vessels. Process gasses from the flash furnace and converters are treated in a two-train/ double-contact sulfuric acid plant. The plant captures 98% of the sulfur. A new flash furnace was commissioned in July 1988. It has since processed more than 2.7 Mt (3 million st) of sulfide concentrate without a major rebuild. The company has gained unique experience in the operation of the flash furnace at high oxygen enrichments with low off-gas dust loadings. New procedures have been developed to maintain secondary material generation at equilibrium and for maintaining metallurgical control of operating parameters. Process flow description At Magma's San Manuel plant, concentrates and other copper-bearing material are blended and conveyed from two separate areas of the plant to three 420 t (465 st) capacity wet charge bins located above the rotary dryer. Flash furnace silica flux is conveyed to a 227-t (250-st) capacity fine flux bin located adjacent to the wet charge bins. The concentrate and flux are blended in controlled amounts and fed into a 168-t/ h (185-stph) gas-fired rotary dryer. The wet charge enters the dryer at 8% moisture and is dried to 0.2% moisture. The dried charge is pneumatically conveyed to a 580-t/h (640-stph) dry charge bin located above the flash furnace. Flash furnace charge is drawn from the bin by two drag conveyors at a concentrate feed rate of 145 t/h (160 stph). The charge is mixed with enriched combustion air and injected into the furnace reaction shaft. In the reaction shaft, the charge is oxidized to form matte, slag and a rich SO, off-gas.

Over the past 14 years, the efforts of 2 companies and several individuals have outlined a major solfataric gold ore body in the Summitville district in the southeast San Juan Mountains of Colorado. The hard work of these years could not have flowered without a dedication to modern exploration methods, an intense interest in new theories of ore genesis, and a relentless discontent with the accepted geology of the Summitville area. To set the stage for this discovery period, it must be noted that it began 100 years after gold was first found at Summitville. It was the height of the "porphyry copper" era and gold was still not a part of the explorationists' portfolio. It was also a time of great intellectual stimulation. Theories were rapidly developing to relate different types of ore deposition and to place ore genesis within the fabric of plate tectonics. Summitville itself had just been linked to the newly discovered Platoro caldera complex and the Platoro lineament. This in turn related Summitville to the other San Juan volcanic field caldera ore deposits.
