Timber decay is due largely if not wholly to a fungus growth on the timber from which it derives' food; a warm, moist atmosphere is necessary for rapid growth. The decay is spread from infected timber to sound timber by countless microscopic spores or seeds given off by the fungus growth and carried by air currents or by long, cottonlike threads, which spread from timber to timber. Haulage roads in most mines in the central coal fields are also return aircourses; hence moisture and temperature conditions are ideal for the rapid decay of mine ties and mine timber. Possibly the return air, which contains a higher percentage of carbon dioxide than normal outside air, also stimulates the growth of fungi. Those familiar with coal mining have observed the more pronounced growth of fungi and decay of timber in poorly ventilated worked-out sections of mines where the air is moist and where usually the percentage of carbon dioxide in the air is considerably above normal.

The developments of the past five years have shown that Alaska, as a field for mining, stands in the first rank among the possessions of the United States. Its annual gold output is now about $8,000,000. It produces silver, copper and coal in commercial quantities and its recently discovered tin and petroleum promise to become important products. Concurrent with the gradual development of this wealth, the mining public has ceased to regard the territory simply as an arctic province where a few placer-miners struggle with adverse conditions to secure a grub-stake or a modest fortune. Of late years there has been a large influx of capital to investigate its mineral resources, but in its area of nearly 600,000 sq. miles there still remain large, unexploited and little-known fields. This work of investigation has been carried on under adverse conditions, and reflects credit on all who have shared in it, whether prospectors, mining engineers, or geologists. It is the purpose of this paper to outline briefly what has been, and is being, accomplished toward furthering the knowledge of Alaska's mineral wealth, and in this connection to present a brief history of the operations of the United States Geological Survey in the territory. A list of the publications of the Geological Survey, which pertain to Alaska, is presented as an appendix, in the hope that it may prove useful to those who are interested in the mining of this northern province. During the Russian occupation of Alaska, from 1783 to 1866, but little attempt was made to delineate its geographic features or to study its geology and mineral resources. "The furnace is the heart of smelting operations, and therefore the performance, reliability, and campaign life of the furnace are critical considerations. Furnace refractory is exposed to high temperatures and other harsh operating conditions causing brick erosion, crushing, and cracking, typically limiting the furnace campaign life and requiring costly furnace shut-downs for refractory re-lining. Despite extensive study, the in-service thermal / mechanical stresses in these complex refractory systems are not generally well understood. Hatch has developed a thermal-mechanical finite element analysis (FEA) based furnace refractory modeling approach that allows for the quantification of refractory movements, load distribution, and thermal / mechanical stresses.Due to the complexity of the refractory system, a range of models are used to identify and assess damage mechanisms and design improvements, including: 2D models, to capture expansion and movement of individual bricks, changes to load paths, and thermal stresses; and 3D models, to include the effect of differential expansion between bricks in each course, and assess overall load distributions. The 2D and 3D analyses include the effect of nonlinear temperature-dependent properties, thermal expansion, movement of individual bricks with frictional contacts (i.e., gaps can open, bricks can slide), and brick tensile or compressive failure. Both as-built and damaged conditions can be investigated (e.g., after bath zone brick erosion), for circular and rectangular furnaces. 3D models also include papering and brick joint & interface action.Analyses using these models have shown the importance of thermal stresses, papering, and geometry / arrangement of individual bricks. Results have been used to identify and assess damage mechanisms, showing good alignment with furnace autopsy observations. By using this FEA-based approach to quantify the refractory design, the risk of damage can be significantly reduced, low-cost design changes can be identified, and the furnace campaign life can be extended.INTRODUCTIONThe furnace is the heart of smelting operations and therefore the performance, reliability, and campaign life of the furnace are critical to the success of the smelting operation. Furnaces are inherently exposed to high temperatures, often in excess of 1600°C (Holappa, 2004), and furnace operating power has progressively increased over time (Voermann, Gerritsen, Candy, Stober, & Matyas, 2004). The refractory system must withstand high temperature, high heat flux, and other harsh operating conditions. These conditions are particularly significant for the furnace hearth, and can lead to damage including brick erosion due to molten material flows, crushing due to thermal expansion loads, and cracking due to severe thermal gradients within the bricks. Refractory damage typically limits the furnace campaign life, requiring costly furnace shut-downs for refractory re-lining (repair or replacement). In some cases the refractory may lose integrity causing damage to nearby equipment and harm to personnel."

"INTRODUCTION Strategies to improve performance in mining production, maintenance and mineral processing operations has evolved over time from straightforward time studies of individual machine performance in the 1960’s-1970’s to more sophisticated and better focused statistical and financial tools that have emerged in the 1980’s-1990’s . These newer strategies fall under the broad descriptive category of “Operational Excellence”. Operational Excellence is the term that embodies a number of performance evaluating strategies, the most popular and relevant to mining includes the following: • Six sigma for addressing errors within mining or milling process and work standards • Lean manufacturing to optimize organizational and operational performance through continuous improvement. There are other strategies that can be applied as well and this paper is not focused on a review of the pros and cons of any one strategy. However, the common threads in these strategies embody the expectation that expected results from these efforts can be quantified and that value will positively benefit the targeted work process, organizational unit, equipment deployment or time schedule when applied to it as part of continuous improvement efforts. The priority for proceeding with any one or more of these efforts is based on the calculated net value of the required resources to affect the change versus the estimated value gained. The practice is identified as the value mapping process. This discussion summarizes the value mapping process methodology used at a mature uranium mine and mill in northern Canada to work through the myriad of potential improvement efforts available through the operational excellence process for continuous improvement.THE RABBIT LAKE MINE AND MILL The Rabbit Lake Mine and Mill are located in northern Saskatchewan, Canada on the shores of Wollaston Lake (Figure 1).The mine was discovered in the mid-1960s and was built by Gulf Minerals, Ltd. The mill began processing uranium ore into yellowcake in 1975 from an adjacent open pit mine. A whole ore acid leaching followed by solvent extraction and precipitation forms the basic milling processes. The operation continued to produce yellowcake through a succession of open pits and finally opened an underground mine in the early 1990s. Since beginning production, over 200 million pounds of yellowcake has been packaged from the site, making it the sixth highest producing uranium mine of all time."

"Experimental heats of reaction for the formation of several Al3Ti + TiB2 intermetallic composite formulations have been determined utilizing bomb calorimetry. To overcome the kinetic constraints and achieve ignition in these formulations, a boron (B)/potassium nitrate (KNO3) initiation aid was incorporated within the blended reactant compact. The heat contribution from the initiation aid was regressed to provide estimates of the heat of reaction of the nominal formulations. Powder x-ray diffraction was utilized to identify the products of the reaction and discern any differences between the predicted equilibrium products of the formulation and the actual products.IntroductionReaction synthesis is a technique for the creation of ceramics, intermetallics, and in-situ composite materials [1]. Reaction synthesis is defined by its self, propagating mechanism, where the energy liberated from a localized reaction within a green powder compact is enough to carry the bulk reaction to completion. Achieving a self, propagating state can be achieved in variations of two primary methods of initiation: uniform volumetric heating and directional propagation [2].Uniform volumetric heating involves subjecting a green compact of the unreacted formulation to uniform heating in a furnace to encourage diffusion to initiate the reaction (Figure 1a) throughout the bulk material. Directional propagation utilizes a point heat source at one section of a green compact of unreacted formulation (Figure 1b). The localized exothermic reaction at one point in the compact then initiates the reaction in the section of the compact adjacent to it and fully propagates throughout the entire compact until completion. Initiation of the localized reaction is generally associated with the melting of the constituent with the lowest melting point, with instantaneous initiation of the reaction usually occurring close to that melting point [1]. This melting point can be high in some systems of interest, such as the titanium (Ti) and boron (B) system in equation 1:"

The Newport mine, located at Ironwood, gogebic county, Mich., on the Gogebic iron-range, is owned and operated by the Newport Mining Co., for the mining of iron-ore. I. GEOLOGY. The general geology of the gogebic range has been determined and recorded at different times by well-known geologists,' and their work will be referred to briefly in connection with the local conditions in the mine. The strike of the formation across this property is about 15" north of east. The general dip is 68" to the north. At the base of the formation on the aouth lies the granite. Looking north, at right angles to the strike of the formation, we have the foot-wall of quartz-slates and quartzite about 400 ft. wide; the iron-formation about 800 ft. wide, and the hanging-mall of black slates. The iron-formation is composed of banded jasper and quartzite together with iron oxide and concentrations of iron-ore. In character the ore iu a soft red hematite, with occasional masses of hard blue "steel ore." The formation is crossed in many places by diorite dikes, which cut through at various angles, the larger or main dikes dipping into the foot-wall in a SE. direction at angles varying from 15" to 30°, while numerous small dikes occur which strike through the formation in a vertical plane and at approximately right angles to the main dikes. There are various theories concerning these dikes, especially as to the time of their origin with relation to the ore-deposition. The commonly-accepted theory is that the dikes were there first, but there are some who contend that they were formed

This study provides recommendations for improved safety in underground blasting procedures based on in-mine observations of blasting practices in 30 underground metal, non-metal, and coal mines, and the analysis of blasting accidents since 1970 and existing state and federal regulations pertaining to the storage and use of explosives. Results of these analyses and observations indicate that 1) blasting accidents have declined but are an important contributor to the hazards of underground mining; 2) existing regulations are essentially adequate; 3) greater emphases should be placed on human errors and unsafe practices and the enforcement of existing regulations; and 4) future revisions of these regulations and standards should be organized, and their intent coordinated to eliminate ambiguities.

Approximately 7 billion tons of soil, rock and ore are currently being excavated in open pit mines and quarries on the North American continent at the present time. As the depth of excavation increases and the grade of ore being mined reduces, the safety and economy of the stability of the pit slopes becomes increasingly important. The magnitude of the potential influence on economics can be appreciated from the results of recent full scale field studies by Kennecott Copper Corporation at the Kimbley pit near Ely Nevada (Merrill, 1968). This pit was originally excavated with an average wall slope of 45°. Based on detailed studies it appeared that a slope of 610 would be stable. Subsequent excavation to this slope proved the original pit could have been steepened by 16° during production.

We describe a new method of characterising the effect of dissolved materials on the rate of coalescence of bubbles in aqueous media. Single bubbles were allowed to rise to meet the surface of an aqueous solution, and the time of persistence between arrival and bursting of bubble was measured as a function of solute concentration. A laser beam was placed just above the surface of the liquid, with a detector in the light path, so that any disturbance at the surface could be seen as a break in the beam. The arrival of a bubble at the surface could be detected from the behaviour of the trace on an oscilloscope, and when the bubble broke, another significant change in the signal could easily be seen. The time between disruptions was reported as the persistence time. The effect of a homologous series of n-alcohols (C1 to C8) on the persistence time was measured, in aqueous solution. It was found that with increasing concentration of a particular solute, the persistence time increased up to a point, and then declined. However the magnitude of the persistence time was found to increase with increasing numbers of carbon atoms in the molecule. Bubbles of 1, 2 and 3 mm diameter were used. Persistence time increased with increasing bubble diameter, the maximum values observed being of order 100 secs. For a given solute, the persistence (drainage) time increased with increasing bubble diameter. The concentration Cmax at which the maximum persistence time was observed, was found to be independent of the bubble size. It decreased uniformly as the carbon number increased, and was well correlated by the function y1/2 (dy /dc) -2 I dc)-2 . There was no apparent correlation with the surface excess at maximum persistence time.

T HE production of coal in Canada was slightly higher in 1964 than in the immediate past, and the major users continue to be the electric utility and metallurgical industries. There are continuing trends toward the increased use of cokes and chars in various metallurgical applications. Geological Research During 1964, the coal drilling program of the Research Council of Alberta (RCA) was concentrated in the extreme south of the Province (notably in the Milk River area and the region immediately to the northeast of this area). Field work commenced on June 1 and was completed at the end of September, by which time a total of 376 holes, aggregating some 48,500 ft., were drilled in 132 townships. Although no new major coal occurrences were intersected, the pro-gram yielded useful data for defining the extent of the known coal deposits in the area. A method for preparing gravimetric primary standards of helium in the parts per trillion range has been developed by the Bureau of Mines. The standards are used to calibrate a specially modified mass spectrometer used in determining the abundance of helium-3 and helium-4 in geochemical samples and of helium-3 in isotopically purified helium-4. The desired gas standards are prepared in 5-kg metal cylinders filled to 1,800 psia. Relative errors of less than 1 pct have been attained in the parts per trillion range using a successive dilution technique.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines study found that the performance of the active noise cancellation hearing protector in a reverberant field was mixed. The performance varied when the conditions changed from ideal to nonideal. The active noise cancellation (ANC) component provided substantial additional noise reduction from 125 to 500 Hz for all testing conditions (broadband noise or pure tones both with and without safety glasses). While the ANC under ideal conditions provided additional attenuation from 500 Hz and below, under nonideal pink noise conditions the ANC amplified noise below the 125-Hz third octave band. There was a middle band of frequencies at which the ANC amplified noise levels ranging from 630 to 4,000 Hz. The results for pure tones showed that attenuations were higher but that they followed the same general trend.

A common problem in the mining industry is that company exploration groups operate in relative isolation to the rest of the company; resulting in poor knowledge transfer (Qureshi and Briggs, 2006) and often priority conflicts with mine geology, operations and project departments. In recognition of this problem, Newcrest created a Minerals Division responsible for stewardship and governance of mineral assets across the value chain from reconnaissance to rehabilitation. It was recognised at an early stage that effective collaboration both internally and externally would be required to improve decision making, deliver faster cycle times and improve governance.Collaboration in companies is generally associated with the introduction of new IT functions. However, modern IT-based collaboration systems and practices are relatively simplistic compared to the long-standing practices associated with collaboration and knowledge management in science and engineering disciplines such as geology and mining.The authors of this paper have started a trial of a 12-point plan for effective collaboration, which recognises that significant efficiencies can be gained and barriers to future success removed if more effective collaboration can be achieved between science and engineering divisions in a company along with external professionals and with the collective intelligence (Tapscott and Williams, 2006) of the outside world. To meet growth aspirations some companies, like Newcrest Mining Ltd, are adopting this comprehensive, step change approach by moving from a closed model the isolates mine geologists to an open and collaborative model that uses IT visualisation systems strategically. The paper describes how an open model provides people with the right work environment and the right information at the right time, which will help individuals and workgroups to work more collaboratively day-to-day. The aim is to achieve speed, focus and mitigate risk through an environment where everyone and anyone can contribute effectively (Cisco, 2008).

Although the amount of dust that will be actually recovered in the six main dust-control systems cannot be accurately stated until the tests mentioned previously are carried out, it is estimated that the average air entering the wet collectors will contain around 5 grains of dust particles per cubic foot. This means that the six systems handling a total of about 133,000 cu.ft. of air per minute will return about 68 1/2 tons of dust to the concentrator per day and since the copper in this dust will average around 2 per cent, the total recovery is approximately 1.37 tons of copper every 24 hours. This important copper recovery is not due entirely to the dust-control system since in a plant without control only the duct that is dispersed to the atmosphere represents a loss. A conservative estimate of the recovery of copper solely due to the dust control system would be about half of the total or approximately 0.70 tons of copper per day.

Mineral Resources estimation plays a crucial role in the profitability of the future of mining operations. The conventional geostatistical methods used for grade estimation require expertise, understanding and knowledge of the spatial statistics, resource modelling, geology, mining engineering as well as clean validated data to build accurate block models. However, the geostatistical models are sensitive to changes in data and would have to be rebuilt on newly acquired data with different characteristics, which has proved to be a time-consuming process. Machine learning methods have in recent years been proposed as an alternative to the geostatistical methods to alleviate the problems these might suffer from in Mineral Resource estimation. In this paper, a systematic literature review of machine learning methods used in Mineral Resource estimation is presented. This has been conducted on such studies published during the period 1990 to 2019. The types, performances, and capabilities, of several machine learning methods have been evaluated and compared against each other, and against the conventional geostatistical methods. The results, based on 31 research studies, show that the machine learningbased methods have outperformed the conventional grade estimation modelling methods. The review also shows there is active research on applying machine learning to grade estimation from exploration through to exploitation. Further improvements can be expected if advanced machine learning techniques are to be used.

AT the time this investigation was initiated variations were observed in the quality of different heats of basic electric-furnace steels, although they had been made under purportedly similar conditions. This indicated that these variations were related to normally unobserved variations in the character of the bath, especially during the "refining" period. Although the slags used for this operation are commonly referred to as "reducing" slags, and are regarded as having a "deoxidizing" action on the bath, no reliable measurements of this action were available. It was decided, therefore, to study the behavior of oxygen in the metal for a large enough number of heats to learn its normal variations and to relate these variations to regularly observed conditions [f] operation. The most important general conclusion reached was that the time a heat is held under a reducing slag should be reduced to a minimum, which was about an hour and a half under the conditions studied. Beyond this time no observable beneficial effects are obtained from the reducing slags, insofar as oxygen and sulphur content of the bath are concerned. It is likely that added time may increase hydrogen content as well as heat costs. The oxygen content of the bath is never reduced below the amount in equilibrium with the carbon. Concurrently with this work, J. S. Marsh1 presented data that supplement and support many of the results of this paper. PROCEDURE The work was done in two different electric-furnace shops of the same plant. The selection of heats was made primarily with regard to the convenience of heat schedules. Companion slag and metal samples were taken just prior to slag-off and throughout the refining period for an initial set of 17 heats, and before slag-off and near tap for an additional 13 heats. Slag sampling presented no particular problem; a spoonful of slag was poured onto a metal plate and when sufficiently cool was sealed in an airtight container. Sampling the metal for oxygen presented a more complex problem. Because of the lack of previous experience in sampling electric-furnace baths, a number of methods were compared. Chilled Wedge Samples2 An unkilled metal sample is removed from tie furnace in a well-slagged carbometer spoon and poured immediately into a heavy copper mold designed to provide rapid freezing. Three different types of molds were used to determine the optimum for electric-furnace heats. The Big Wedge Mold (a) was a 4 by 4 by 4-in. split copper mold, yielding a wedge-shaped casting 1 in. wide, 1 ½ in. long, and ¼ in. maximum thickness, and was finally adopted as the most satisfactory design. The Long Wedge Mold (b) was a 2 by 2 by 5 ¼ -in. split copper mold, yielding a wedge-shaped casting 1 in. wide, 2 ¾ in. long, and ¼ in. maximum thickness. The Small Wedge Mold (c) was 2 by 2 by 4-in. split copper mold, yielding a wedge-shaped casting 1 in. wide, 1 ½ in. long, and ¼ in. maximum thickness.

Microorganisms have a tremendous influence on their environment through the transfer of energy, charge, and materials across a complex biotic mineral-solution interface. Recent developments in biotechnology have not only aided hydrometallurgical leaching operations but also shown great promise in mineral beneficiation processes. The adhesion of bacteria on minerals alters the surface properties relevant to flotation and flocculation of minerals. The biomodification of mineral surfaces occurs through the attachment of microbial cells, oxidation reactions and adsorption or chemical reaction with the metabolite products. Several types of heterotrophic and chemolithotrophic bacteria have been successfully applied in flotation and flocculation processes for the last two decades. Al-though the potential of microorganisms in minerals beneficiation has been realised by several re-searchers from their laboratory investigations, the studies were mostly confined to pure mineral systems and there is hardly any sincere effort to apply the methodologies on ores. This paper presents a brief summary of the literature in bioflotation and bioflocculation, and attempts to outline new dimensions of research for a practicable application of this technology in mineral industry.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the possibility of physically separating Missouri and Minnesota granites into commercially usable fractions of feldspar, quartz, and mica by mineral dressing techniques. The probability of r covering a feldspar fraction from raw granite suitable for commercial uses was developed through correlation of the iron oxide content by extensive petrographic studies. This probability evaluation also included Wisconsin granites and a high-feldspar iron ore concentration tailing from Missouri. Laboratory recoveries of feldspar and quartz were on the order of 80 percent. Mineral content of each fraction was generally over 95 percent, indicating excellent response to separatory techniques, Acid leaching of feldspar and quartz concentrates to remove iron oxide improved the grades chemically; however, occluded iron oxide particles in the leached products prevented attaining top grades of feldspar. Mica was removed as scrap grade at low recoveries. Each concentrate conformed to some category of commercial feldspar, quartz, or mica.
