"Analytical Chemistry is moving rapidly towards a concept where technicians have to do no more than press a button and print the result from an instrument that is a featureless ""black box"". In this environment we must ask how much traditional ''wet chemistry"" is still required for undergraduate students.Methods that can be fully automated will become increasingly important. An example of such a method is that of the slurry nebulisation and ICP-OES analysis of precious metal concentrate. Grinding the sample and adding Triton X100 as dispersant, complete analysis time is in the order of 90 min as apposed to the traditional Carius tube method which could take as long as 24 h. For most of the elements studied, the results using ""in-house"" reference material for calibration and as samples as well were within the 95% confidence level. Elements of low concentration in the sample (As, Bi and Se) were not within that level."

The lanthanon compounds are becoming increasingly more important for ceramic and allied applications. As the supply increases and the cost decreases, further development of these interesting materials will undoubtedly lead to new applications and an increased demand. Recent improvements in separation processes have lead to high purity in the individual lanthanon oxides. This report includes short discussions on the mineralogy of the ores as raw materials, and on the separation processes required to produce the pure individual lanthanon oxides in useful quantities. To discuss the presently known applications of lanthanon oxides, this general review is divided into the following categories: A. Glasses, Glazes, and Porcelain Enamels. B. Refractories and Abrasives. C. Electronic Ceramics. D. Nuclear Ceramics.

A basic method for designing reasonable jig cycles for movable-screen jigs is presented in this paper. The reliability and effectiveness of the designed jig cycle was verified with tests performed on an artificial mixed material. An iron ore (12 - 100 mm) from Huashugo Iron Mine, Jiuquan Iron and Steel Company, was treated in the TJD-75 movable-screen jig using the designed jig cycle. A good result was achieved. The procedure presented here should provide a reliable technique for the design of a commercial movable-screen jig.

With increased co-firing of coal and different biomasses in power plants, there is a growing need to study and characterize the produced, often heterogeneous ashes and to assess their utilization as secondary raw materials. In this work, we compare different methods for characterizing the ash compositions. These methods include scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDS), X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and inductively coupled plasma emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). The content of carbonaceous residues in the ashes was measured with CHN Sanalyzer. The methods and the pretreatment required for each of the analysis were studied in detail for three ashes: (1) coal, (2) peat and wood, (3) peat and wood residue with dolomite addition. The limitations of each method will be discussed. This work gives guidelines for selecting a rapid and reliable method for analyzing the suitability of the ash for a particular application.

Analytical results, including ash fusibility data, are presented by the Bureau of Mines for 10 major constituents in coal ash from 373 samples of commercial U.S. coals. Determinations of Si02, Al2O3, Fe2O3, and P2O5 were made by colorimetric methods, Na2O and K2O by flame photometry, Ti02, CaO, and MgO by a spectrochemical method, and SO3 by a gravimetric method. In bituminous coal ashes the silicon, aluminum, and iron calculated as oxides often make up about 90 percent of the ash.

Manganese-ore has been found upon the Isthmus of Panama throughout' a region of nearly three hundred square miles, over the greater part of which, however, it is known only in small bodies without commercial value. Only six mines, controlled by two companies, have actually shipped ore, although a large area has been taken up in miningelaims. The ore-bearing region extends along the coast of the Carib. bean Sea, beginning on the west near Puerto Bello and extending easterly about 35 miles toward Point San Blas. Ore has been discovered in the interior, at a maximum distance of about 10 m. from the coast. Fig. 1 is a map of a portion of the Isthmus

Expanded markets for copper in the past few years and a consequent search for new ore bodies have revitalized the widely known but seldom applied method of producing copper called heap leaching. Heap leaching is defined here as the process applied to oxide ores which have been mined solely for the purpose of leaching. In this case, all costs of mining the ore become a part (and a substantial one, as will be shown) of the cost of the copper produced, whereas in dump leaching the mining cost has already been accounted for as a stripping cost for the sulfide ore. Of course, with newly opened ore bodies, stripping costs may be divided through accounting procedures, between the copper produced by the mill and that obtained by leaching, but in general this type of operation must be economic on the basis of the sulfide ore alone. Heap Leaching Requires Low Capitalization Heap leaching, as a beneficiation method, is unique in that it is the only process used for the recovery of a metal in which the time involved from mining the ore to metal production is measured in months instead of hours or at the most, days. Then too, after the ore body has been depleted and mining has ceased, metal production will continue for some substantial period of time. Heap leaching is also unique because unlike any other method of beneficiation, metal recovery cannot be accurately forecast ahead of time and recovery will never approach that of a conventionally milled sulfide ore or even that of a vat leached oxide ore. Counter-balancing this drawback, however, is the relatively low capital expenditure necessary to put a heap leaching operation into production and the consequence that smaller ore bodies which would not support the higher capital cost involved in a vat leaching plant can be made into producers. Stated more simply, in heap leaching the operator accepts low recovery in exchange for low capital costs and low break even point. Whether the operator chooses vat leaching with its higher recovery and higher capital costs, is a mater of economics which depends in part on the nature of the ore to decide. For instance, an ore that will vat leach in 7 to 10 days using 7 pounds of sulfuric acid per pound of copper produced might use double or triple that amount of acid during the months that are required for heap leaching.

PROCESSES employing controlled atmospheres in the heat-treatment of metals and alloys are now well established on an industrial scale, and the general principles involved and the advantages to be gained in the use of the technique have received considerable publicity over a period of years. During this time the greatest emphasis has been on the establishment of the process in industry, the main effort being devoted to development work on various types of atmospheres, their useful fields of application and the design of suitable heat-treatment furnaces in which they are to be used. The various types of controlled atmospheres are fairly well standardized, but there still remains a considerable field for the investigation of related problems, in connection with both the gas-generating equipment and the surface chemistry of the heat-treatment of metals, especially in complex controlled atmospheres. This paper describes certain investigations of this nature that were carried out in England up to 1939. The development of processes employing controlled atmospheres has been associated to a very large extent with the heat-treatment of steels, both because of the major importance of steel in industry and the many diverse and difficult problems of surface chemistry involved when steels of such a wide range of composition are heated in the presence of active gases Controlled atmospheres such as dissociated and burnt ammonia or charcoal gas are used in the heat-treatment of low-carbon and high-carbon steels, but from certain points of view a suitable atmosphere generated by the partial combustion of city gas is to be preferred. Both the ammonia derivatives are comparatively expensive, and even if the burnt ammonia is regenerated, thereby reducing operating costs, the capital expenditure of the gas plant may make it prohibitive for the smaller type of furnace installation. Charcoal-gas generators are not without their operating difficulties: especially those associated with the quality of the charcoal, clinker formation and the removal of carbon dust from the generated gas. City gas has the advantage of being comparatively cheap and "on tap" in most if not all industrial centers. The use of raw city gas as a protective atmosphere in the heat-treatment of steels has been described,1 but it presents certain difficulties because of its complex composition and its explosive nature when mixed with air. These factors, together with the tendency toward sooting at elevated temperatures, arising mainly from the hydrocarbon gases present, all militate against its use as a protective atmosphere in industrial furnaces. Feldspar, a low-alumina, and abundantly available aluminosilicate source, is explored in this study to extract aluminum and potassium values. The sample comprises lamellar layers of microcline and albite with quartz containing 17.4% Al2O3, 9.67% K2O, and 66.3% SiO2. Mechanical (milling) and thermal (alkali and acid baking) activation are investigated, followed by HCl leaching. The milling treatment up to 6 h is inefficient in phase dissociation and results in ~ 40% Al and K dissolution. The alkali thermal treatment yielded 80% Al and 71% K extraction. Direct precipitation of the dissolved Al and Si values yielded alumina purity of ~ 29%, and silica gelation separated SiO2 and improved alumina product (94% purity, 71% recovery). Acid baking yielded 98% pure alumina precipitate; however, Al and K extraction were limited to ~ 45% and 65%, respectively. The microwave-assisted alkali treatment was optimal with 800 W and 10 min processing conditions yielding 80% Al and 71% K recovery with 2.26 kWh/kg alumina of thermal energy consumption. NEW YORK'S largest hotel, the Pennsylvania, will be filled with mining and oil men and metallurgists the third week of February when some 3000 AIME members, their wives, and guests will gather for the Institute's 1948 Annual Meeting-its 166th general meeting. Except for the usual Sunday afternoon and evening sessions of the Mineral Industry Education Division at the Columbia University Men's Faculty Club, the big assembly will be under one top and members will not this year have to consult compass and map to find their next session. Possibly enervated by the stupendous effort of the Anniversary Celebration last spring and the plethora of highly successful fall meetings, the various committees have been a trifle slow in arranging their social and technical programs, but in mid December as we go to press there is already much to report indicative of substantial fare and high interest. The definite timetable schedule will appear in the February M&M.

The use of standard dense-media cyclones is well known, as they have been in use for many years. They are especially well suited for operating at low separating densities and for treating difficult coals containing a high percentage of near-gravity at the point of separation. Very few modifications of the basic design have ever been made. The author recently, however, has been interested in the development of a new type of dense-media cyclone that has been produced in Japan. He has observed the testing of this unit and has collected much data which he feels should be of considerable interest to coal preparation engineers. He feels that this unit, called the Swirl Cyclone, may be of substantial value as an alternate to the standard cyclones. It is certainly worthy of further investigation. There has been relatively little written in English-language publications on the Swirl Cyclone. It was briefly described at the Fifth International Coal Preparation Congress. I It has been described in a general manner by the author in two prior publications. 2, 3 This paper proposes to describe this device in more detail and at the same time submit technical data illustrating its wide characteristics.

In order to recover the waste heat of molten blast furnace slag, a reactor with top-submerged lance was established. The numerical simulation and experiment study of the flow characteristic in the reactor were conducted. The mathematical model of reactor was established and the Euler-Euler model was employed to simulate the gas-liquid flow in molten slag bath. Meanwhile, the experiment results were obtained and compared with the simulation to testify the accuracy of the established model. According to the bubble behavior in bath, there were four stages: initial expansion stage, bubble detachment stage, freedom lift up stage and bubble broken stage. When the flow field in bath fully developed, the gas fraction decreased with the increasing of bath depth. During injection process, the area near the nozzle and lower the bath would first generate two symmetric heliciform flow regime, and then the flow regime in whole bath would become irregular because of bubble lifting up and rupturing. The gas fraction in bath, the average velocity and turbulence energy of slag would decrease before it increased to maximum and then it would keep fluctuate in a range.

THE statisticians had defeated Germany months before she invaded Poland. With batteries of adding machines they had proved that she was suffering from serious deficiencies in critical food- stuffs and in practically all of the raw materials necessary for the conduct of modern warfare. Their calculations showed that with respect to fats, oils, wool, cotton, hides, petroleum, iron, copper and other metals, the Reich was bound to be at a great disadvantage vis-a-vis the French and British as long as the latter could keep open the lines of sea communication. The conclusion seemed obvious-"Germany can't win." The more cautious of the commentators introduced qualifications as to the length of the war and the tightness of the British and French blockade. They also made a third qualification as to the character of the struggle- whether it was to be a war of attrition or a war of movement. But since the invasion of Norway in April, there is no longer any doubt on this score. It is a war of movement-a war in which fuel, lubricants, and metals are being consumed on a scale never before seen.

This paper presents a unique stirred milling technology, Outotec HIGmill™, a modern, flexible and energy efficient grinding solution for fine and ultra fine grinding being tested in an industrial scale level. The test was performed at an iron ore pellet producing plant in Sweden (for confidentiality reasons, it will be referred to only as “the client”) where a pilot HIGmill™ unit (HIG25) was installed parallel to a conventional regrind circuit to compare its performance to the existing ball mill. By using a continuous test run procedure and evaluating the parameters of F80, P80, mill shaft rotation speed and power drawn it was determined its grinding capabilities, operational flexibility and energy efficiency. Outotec HIGmill™ outperformed the existing ball mill in the plant proving its capabilities to grinding finer, with steeper particle size distribution (PSD) and much higher energy efficiency. The tests performed showed that, with further refining of its operation, it is capable of consistently deliver the required PSD with up to 30% higher grinding efficiency.

The Buckrange reservoir, Stephens field, Ark., is approaching the economic limit of production under present operating conditions. Over 100 million barrels of oil remaining in the reservoir will not be recovered by primary producing methods. The Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Arkansas Oil and Gas Com-mission, made the petroleum-engineering study presented in this report to aid operators in evaluating secondary-recovery possibilities in the reservoir and in planning secondary-recovery programs if their initiation is decided. The Stephens field, in Columbia, Nevada, and Ouachita Counties, Ark., is about 12 miles northeast of Magnolia, Ark., and 15 miles west of the Smackover field. Surface elevations in the area average about 240 feet above sea level.

The simplest natural ventilation cycle is similar to a Joule or Brayton cycle. This comprises two reversible adiabatic processes in the shafts and constant pressure processes underground and on surface. The thermal efficiency of such a cycle is given by the temperature increase in the downcast shaft divided by the absolute temperature of the air at the bottom of the downcast shaft, and is independent of the temperature increase underground. This efficiency is comparable to the Carnot efficiency, which is the greatest possible value between constant temperature reservoirs, source and sink. Two variations of the Joule cycle are investigated, using numerous work examples. In the first, dry air is used as the working substance, a fan is provided at the top of the upcast shaft, and various mass rates of flow are used with frictionless shafts and a constant resistance value in the horizontal mine workings. The lost work less the fan work gives the natural ventilation work, and this divided by the enthalpy increase in the workings gives the thermal efficiency. The thermal efficiency increases dramatically with mass rate of flow, although the enthalpy increase remains constant. This appears to violate the second law of thermodynamics, since the frictionless case has a Carnot efficiency. When the lost work is added to the enthalpy increase, however, the efficiency decreases slightly from the Carnot value, to conform with the second law. This increase in efficiency with mass rate of flow is often referred to as the reheat effect, although the air is not heated. The second investigation is similar to the first, except that the air entering the downcast shaft contains a small amount of water vapor, and there is evaporation in the mine workings only, until the air entering the upcast shaft is saturated. There is, of course, condensation in the upcast shaft. In this case, it is not possible to calculate the Carnot efficiency, but the thermal efficiency is 20 to 40% of the similar dry air values. This decrease is much more than can be accounted for by the larger value of specific heat for water vapor. In addition, the natural ventilation work is almost constant with increased mass rate of flow, and the thermal efficiency based on heat addition tends to decrease. The thermal efficiency based on heat and lost work decreases in conformity with the second law. The reasons for the differences in behavior between dry and moist air are not readily apparent.

In order to protect nearby structures during a blasting project, a peak particle velocity limit is often stipulated by a government agency or the owner of a particular structure. At the start of a blasting project, a preliminary estimate for the minimum scaled distance is often determined using a vibration prediction equation before any site-specific data have been obtained. Reasonably conservative assumptions are typically made for the unknown input variables in the vibration prediction equation until site-specific blasting data have been obtained and evaluated. Although this approach is prudent, it provides no assurance that the peak particle velocity values generated during the initial phase of the project will be below the specified limit.

During the past ten years we have experienced a period of rapidly-changing ground rules for the mining industry. Domestically we have had to contend with numerous new regulations controlling the impact of mining-related activities on the environment. However, for the purposes of this presentation we will assume that in the United States, after a certain amount of compromise on all sides, the industry will be able to work within the framework of the new regulations, and therefore we will concentrate on offshore developments. Due to the limitations in time and scope, this paper will be directed primarily toward the metal mining industry. We contend that the U.S.-headquartered mining company should remain active, and even expand its interests in foreign countries in the future. This is our feeling in spite of recent setbacks and the low return on investment experienced in recent years by some of the metal mining companies in their foreign operations.

O objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar a resistência à fadiga de duas ligas de NiTi diferentes sob condições de teste controladas por deformação a 25°C por meio de testes de fadiga por flexão rotativa. Além disso, as propriedades mecânicas, térmicas e estruturais dos fios foram caracterizadas por ensaios de DSC, DRX, MEV/EDS e tração. Os resultados revelaram que ambos os materiais são superelásticos à temperatura ambiente e, portanto apresentaram composição basicamente austenítica de sua matriz. Os resultados de ensaio de tração são condizentes com a caracterização térmica e estrutural, pois os materiais apresentam recuperação total de forma após ciclos de carga e descarga em tração. Ambos os materiais são ricos em titânio, um deles apresenta camada de óxido superficial enquanto o outro apresenta acabamento superficial. Apesar das propriedades similares a amostra 1 apresentou média de 77 ciclos até a falha, enquanto a amostra 2 resistiu a 1827 ciclos..

The Bureau of Mines investigated fumes generated by selected welding materials used in mines in order to help determine their relative hazard potential. The initial phases of the study have been completed. A welding-fume generation and collection apparatus was designed, assembled, and calibrated. Five brands of coated, AWS-type E308-16 stainless steel electrodes were tested. Total fume generation rates of 0.39 to 0.51 g/min were measured. Quantitative chemical analyses were conducted for all of the principal firms constituents. Two analytical schemes were used to determine levels of the Cr6+ and Cr3+ species contained in the welding fumes; comparable results were obtained. The Cr6+ was found to be the most hazardous constituent, leading to a maximum allowable total fume exposure of 1 mg/m3. Fume generation rates and fume constituent analyses will be derived for other groups of welding electrodes using similar procedures.
