Twelve samples from six Barbour County coal beds were analyzed for this report. The samples collected were generally high sulfur content coals, frequently exceeding 3 percent in the raw-coal sample. Many of them could not be upgraded to acceptable metallurgical standards even by rigorous preparation procedures. The production of coal in the county in 1963 amounted to almost 3 million tons of which 44 percent was mechanically cleaned.

Four three-phase equilibria and one two-phase equilibrium in the FeNi- S-0 quaternary system in the vicinity of 1023 K and Pso2 = 1 atm were studied using the following emf cell 2 Pt,o2 (air)Zr02 .CaO/Pso2 = 1 atm, mixture of phases, Au The four three-phase equilibria are sp + (Fe,Ni )S + Ni 3s2, sp + Ni 3s2 + NiO, sp + NiO + N1S04 and Fe2 o3 + sp + (Fe,NOS04 -Y:he two-phase equilibrium is sp + (Fe,Ni)S. The two-.phase equilibrium was measured by using mixtures containing a major portion of one phase and a minor portion of the other. The results are presented in terms of oxygen potential as a function of YNi = nNi/(nN1+nFe) at constant temperature and pso2 = 1 atm. The stability diagram was also calculated using appropriate thermodynamic models for all the pertinent phases. The calculated diagram is in accord with the measured ones.

This morning, gentlemen, I should like to discuss resin anchors of a type introduced to North America approximately 2-1/2 years ago. We shall also briefly review the basics of mechanically anchored rockbolts so that a general comparison may be made. Previous efforts with synthetic resins were aimed at aiding a mechanical Or "point" anchor, obtain a better purchase in the rock mass. Resin cartridges of the type to be described in this paper are capable of achieving point anchorage or full encapsulation of mine roof or rockbolts. Of significance, therefore, is that unlike a mechanical bolt, placed and tensioned, celtite rockbolts may be fully grouted and tensioned or left untensioned in the installation sequence. Our principle effort has been to offer this system to mining and civil engineers who have encountered difficult rock conditions and wish to reinforce strata to achieve a greater degree of permanence and safety.

The authors have previously described a piezoelectric-based system to measure the dynamic pressure during actual detonation in the field. This technique is used in a water hammer test set-up where a donor detonator is fired first, with the pressure sensor and an acceptor electronic detonator placed underwater in a water tank, and maintained at a fixed distance away from the donor detonator. The functioning and timing of the acceptor detonator are captured using a customised microcontroller board called the water hammer timer. Using such water hammer testing, the effect of dynamic pressure was studied as a function of the magnitude of pressure during the electronic timing countdown. Data obtained indicate there is no significant impact in the timing of the electronic detonators in contrast to what has been reported in non-electric detonators.CITATION:Teowee, G, Solis, H, Papillon, B E and Ibarra, R, 2015. The liability created by building this railway is the great financial problem before the people of British Columbia at the present time. In dealing with the subject, I propose to divide it into three periods: The Past - The Present - and The Future. The Past The primary objects in building the railway were to provide an independent and direct route for the Grand Trunk Pacific railway into the city of Vancouver, and to open the central and north-eastern portion of the province.. This vast territory, almost one-half the entire area of British Columbia, has great wealth in fruit, agricultural, and grazing lands; timber, coal, water-power and minerals of all kinds, including some of the richest placer deposits in the world. Rivers and lakes teem with fish. Big game, including moose, elk, caribou, deer, grizzly and black bear, mountain goat and sheep, is plentiful and there is an abundance of small game and fur-bearing animals. In addition, its scenic attractions are unsurpassed in Canada. To develop these resources it was considered necessary to build a railway from south to north as a main artery of transportation and, if necessary, branch lines to carry heavy .shipments of coal or other commodities. Lighter freight may be handled by motor trucks from distant points to the railway.

The first time that a geologist is confronted with the necessity of evaluating a lateritic ore deposit, he may feel that nothing could be easier. Why should there be any problems in making an economic evaluation of a relatively flat-lying, surficial ore body? After several hundred thousand dollars worth of frustrating work often culminating in a series of non-reproducible data - the evaluator may be a sadder and wiser man. This paper will try to illustrate why the evaluation of lateritic bauxite and nickel deposits is among the most difficult problems confronting an economic geologist - and, more especially, how this problem can be solved. Volumes have been published on descriptive and genetic studies of lateritic ores. Obviously, there is time today only for the briefest description of such an ore body. The laterite is a soil formed under tropical conditions and resulting in the concentration, within the soil zone, of certain tri-valent metals.- especially, aluminum and nickel. The soil zone is divided into two parts: (a) the true soil or lateritic zone and (b) the zone of, partially altered bed rock or saprolite. INTRODUCTION For the last decades, deep-sea marine resources such as seabed massive sulfides (SMS), polymetallic nodules and ferromanganese crusts (Fe-Mn crusts) have received an ever- increasing amount of attention worldwide for their abundance in critical metals and potential commercial value. This interest has mostly been driven by the growing world demand for raw materials, in particular for high- and green-technology applications (e.g., hybrid and electric cars, batteries, photovoltaic solar cells, cell phones, super magnets), as well as by industrialized countries governments other than BRICS states need to secure a more diversified supply of metals, resulting in a new deep ocean exploration boom. Since the oceans and its resources are increasingly seen as indispensable for humans needs and their challenges in the decades to come, this boom increments pressure on marine areas, either in international or within countries economic exclusive zone (EEZ). Since 2002, the International Seabed Authority (ISA) has signed up 29 contracts with several entities and national governments from multiple countries (e.g., Japan, China, Germany, France, Russia, India, Rep. of Korea, UK, Canada, Brazil) for exploration for deep-sea mineral resources in international waters, either for scientific or commercial proposes, which together cover over 1.3 million km2 [1]. In turn, over 300 exploration licenses, covering more than 650,000 km2, have been granted within the EEZ of Pacific countries such as Papua New Guinea, Tonga, Fiji, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu [2, 3]. This number is expected to increase very rapidly, as 77 countries have proposed to the United Nations the extension of their continental shelf in order to extend their EEZ and jurisdiction over potential deep-sea mineral resources [4]. Its estimated that 42% of the potential areas for SMS occurrences, 54% for cobalt-rich Fe-Mn crusts, and 19% for polymetallic nodules lie within the EEZ of coastal countries [5]. In addition, a huge amount of seafloor is yet to be explored and evaluated. Combined, the size of the granted exploration areas represents less than 10% of the overall area thought as most favorable for the occurrence of the 3 types of deep-sea mineral resources above mentioned. This means that today’s assessments on deep-sea mineral resources are only a rough approximation.

This paper presents the results of theoretical investigations of the energy requirements of the hydraulic lifting of mined materials from the seabed to the sea surface in the deep-sea mining of solid minerals such as manganese nodules in the Clarion-Clipperton region of the Pacific, situated on the sea floor in water depths of 4,500 m or more. The principal element of the developed underwater transport system is the Underwater Chamber, which is connected by flexible pipeline to a mining machine that gathers nodules from the seabed, mixes them with seawater, and feeds them into a flexible pipeline. In this paper, we discuss the question of the optimum water depth for placement of the Chamber, the interior of which is designed to maintain a 1-atmosphere pressure. We present a method for calculating this depth as it relates to the mechanical characteristics of solid particles, the shapes and size distributions of the particles, particle and slurry density, and other properties. These investigations were carried out in hydro-transport laboratory of the Saint-Petersburg Mining Institute and the hydraulic laboratory of Faculty Environmental Engineering in Wroclaw Agricultural University. The mining industry has experienced a general trend toward an increasing number of longwall operations, an increasing percentage of underground coal being mined by longwalls, and increasing productivity from the longwalls. Longwall operators have not yet reached a state of mining euphoria. Competitiveness both within the industry and from alternate fuel sources is forcing continued pursuit of higher productivities and lower costs. The following graphics present trends in the industry. Longwall mines, as defined for this presentation, are those reportedly having longwall installations in each of the respective years. Production from both the continuous miner and longwall units is included in the longwall mines. Non-Longwall mines are all other underground mines. Productivity calculations are based on total employee-hours associated with the operation.

The approximate effective silicon radii in ternary Laves phase alloys with transition elements and silicon were found to range between 1.16 and 1.21A, i.e., considerably smaller than the atomic radius calculated for elemental silicon. The atomic radii were found to increase with the size of the transition element atoms in the structure. It has been noted by Aronsson1 that silicon in solid solution in iron, cobalt, and nickel has an effective CN 12 atomic radius of approximately 1.20Å, a value very much smaller than the CN 12 radius of 1.34Å derived from the interatomic distances in elemental silicon.7 The unusually short metal-silicon interatomic distances in transition element monosilicides and disilicides have been also pointed out by various investigators.1 A similar tendency was observed by Nevitt in Cr3O type silicides.2 Recent work on Laves phases in ternary systems of silicon with transition elements4"8 suggested that extensive Laves phase fields may occur in such systems.8 It has been pointed out by Laves7 that the MgCu2 and MgZn2 type structures lend themselves particularly well for the determination of the effective radii of the component atoms. In these AB2 phases the B atoms are arranged in close packed straight lines, and their distances are related in a simple manner to the lattice parameters.8 The present work was undertaken in order to find out whether or not the B transition element in such AB2 Laves phases can be replaced to an appreciable extent by silicon. In cases where extensive substitution proves to be possible, the "average atomic radius for the B site" at various silicon contents was to be determined, and the effective atomic radius of silicon calculated by extrapolation to complete replacement of the B component by silicon. The following ternary systems were studied: Ti-Mn-Si, Ti-Fe-Si, V-Co-Si, V-Ni-Si, Nb-Fe-Si, Nb-Co-Si, Ta-Fe-Si, Ta-Co-Si, and Mo-Fe-Si. In all of these alloy systems, the Laves phase solid solutions were found to extend over a considerable range of silicon content. As previously reported,4"8 in the V-Co-Si, V-Ni-Si, and Mo-Fe-Si ternary systems Laves phases do occur, even though there are no corresponding binary Laves phases. In stabilizing the Laves phase, silicon acts as if it were decreasing the effective electron concentration of the alloy.8 A more detailed study of the boundaries of the Laves phases in the V-Co-Si and V-Ni-Si systems has been made and will be published elsewhere. In both cases, the elongated Laves phase fields extend parallel to the B-Si side of the composition triangle, clearly showing that silicon is substituting for cobalt, respectively, nickel over a wide range of compositions. The binary Laves phases NbCo2 and TaCo2 have the cubic MgCu2-type structure. It was found that, in both ternary systems with silicon, again the MgZn2-type hexagonal Laves phase is stabilized and that this phase extends to high-silicon contents. In each ternary system at least three Laves phase alloys of the composition A(B1_xSix)2 were used, x here denoting the fractional substitution of the B-transition element atoms by silicon. The alloys, listed in Table I, were prepared by arc melting in argon. Each specimen was water quenched after a homogenizing anneal of 3 days at 110(FC, except for the Mo-Fe-Si alloys, which were annealed at 1200°C. Metallographic examination showed that most of the homogenized alloys consisted of a single phase, although some had minor amounts of a second phase, as shown in Table I. X-ray diffraction patterns were prepared using an asymmetrical focusing camera of large resolution and Fe Ka radiation. THE cement plant nearest to Nova Scotia is not far from Montreal. Cement is a heavy product which, because of its relatively low value, cannot stand a high freight charge without unduly enhancing its cost. This is one reason why cement costs are high in Nova Scotia. The regular retail price per bag (8772 lb.) in Antigonish is 85 cents, which would be $3.40 per Canadian barrel of 350 pounds, or $3.65 per American barrel of 376 pounds.It is said that the lowest wholesale price in Halifax is 65 cents per sack, which would be $2.60 per Canadian barrel or about $2.80 per American barrel. According to U.S. Bureau of Mines statistics, the average factory price for cement in 1937 was $1.48 per American barrel, which is practically the same as the value per barrel indicated in Dominion statistics for the Canadian output during that year. The difference between $3.40 and $1.48 is $1.92. It is evident that the average user of cement in the Mari-times pays a stiff premium because Maritime cement raw materials have not been developed. Rock-wool, the manufacture of which is rapidly increasing in Ontario and the United States, is much needed for building insulation in the cold climate of Nova Scotia.

"The extent and nature of the damage to diamonds at processing plant is largely determined by the design features of the equipment, the characteristics of the feed ore and the parameters of the ore disintegration process (change in the rotational speed of the autogenous mills, variations of the water supply to comminution process, choice of the optimum charge, etc.). To monitor the intactness of diamonds, an instrumental method using the X-ray tomography system and colored synthetic indicator diamonds was developed for identifying the process-related damage. The X-ray tomography system consists of a CT-Portable X-ray tomographic scanner, a crystal positioning device and customized software (developed by the Fraunhofer Institute and Aliud GmbH, Germany). The developed method enables improvement of the accuracy of the results, exclusion of the subjectivity of the mineralogical assessment, acceleration of data processing and promptly planning of the activities aimed at reducing the process-related damage to diamonds. INTRODUCTION Industrial tests of ore processing technology at the enterprises of ALROSA PJSC are accompanied by assessment of the process-related damage to diamonds. The assessment of the process-related damage to crystals is carried out for prompt elimination of factors contributing to the increase of impact forces in the process flow sheet of ore treatment plant. For this purpose a specially selected parcel of -4.0 + 2.0 mm sized natural indicator diamonds is used. The diamonds are exposed to ionizing radiation in order to turn them green and thus to create a distinctive feature. Colored natural indicator diamonds are described, photographed in several views and introduced into the process flow sheet of the processing plant, then extracted from the process flow, described and photographed again. The comparison of diamonds before and after their passing through the process flow sheet of the plant allows to find evidence of process-related impact on the crystal and to calculate the factor of process-related damage (the number of crystals damaged during liberation and recovery), the loss of crystal weight and the degree of damage to the crystals. The method of colored indicator diamonds is used to select processing methods, equipment or regime which would be the safest for diamonds based on the analysis of the factors of process-related damage. The vector sum peak particle velocity (PPV) of blast vibrations describes the blast vibration intensity more completely than the PPV of a single component waveform. It is more logical to use a vector sum PPV as a vibration limit than using a single component PPV. In 1980 the USBM recommended the frequency related peak particle velocity criterion. So far this method has been only applied to single component waveforms, but not to the vector sum PPV since there is no method available to associate a frequency to the vector sum PPV. The present paper describes a method to define a principal frequency associated with vector sum PPV. The method is based on the weighted average of the principal (zero-crossing) frequencies of the three tri-axial components at the time of the PPV.

Since its inception in 1976, over 170,000,000 pounds of high strength ceramic proppants have been employed. Recent field evaluations and economic analysis demonstrate the superiority of sintered bauxite proppant over quartz sand.
