O objetivo deste trabalho é utilizar o vasto banco de dados de informações de processo armazenadas pelo InfoPlus.21, que é um exemplo de sistema PIMS - Plant Information Managment System, para implementar um sensor virtual a partir de um modelo neural visando obter a tendência de resposta da variável consumo específico de uma caldeira. Propõe-se também, extrair diagnósticos do processo através do emprego da Lógica Fuzzy. As etapas de treinamento da rede neural e o desenvolvimento do diagnóstico envolveram simulações no software Matlab. Os resultados obtidos demonstraram-se bastante satisfatórios. Destaca-se a tendência de resposta do sensor virtual que apontou 97% de confiabilidade. Por fim entende-se que as propostas deste trabalho foram alcançadas, principalmente pela implementação inovadora do sensor virtual no InfoPlus.21 por meio da ferramenta SQLPlus, a qual possibilitará novas aplicações no meio industrial.

(Pittsburg Meeting, March, 1910.) IN the copper-mining district of northern Michigan a fair-sized mine usually operates two or more shafts along the strike of the lode, these shafts being usually at least 1,000 ft. apart. The tonnage to be hoisted from each shaft is large-from 13,000 to 25,000 tons per month. The hoisting-engines used are generally steam-driven, non-condensing, duplex engines with Corliss valves, supplied by steam from separate boiler-plants where the distance between shafts is great. In an attempt to centralize power-plants and secure central-station economies, the Winona Copper Co. installed an electric hoist of the Ilgner type, with Ward Leonard control. A brief description of this plant has already been published.1 The only point of variation from the simple Ilgner set lies in the connection of two generators to a single induction-motor by flexible couplings. These generators serve motors which operate hoisting-drums at separate shafts, viz., No. 4 shaft, Winona, and No. 1 shaft, King Philip. , The hoist for No. 4 shaft, is about 1,700 ft. from the power-plant, and in this building the motor-generator set is placed. No. 1 King Philip hoist is 1,500 ft. from the motor-generator set. The equipment of the motor-generator set is as follows: In the middle of the set is a 12-pole, 450-h-p., 600-rev. per min., 2,080-volt, three-phase, 60-cycle, variable-speed induction-motor, connected on each side to a 20-ton fly-wheel which is 10 ft. in diameter, and to a 6-pole, 170-kw, 575-volt, interpole, direct-current generator. On each side of the shaft is placed a separate exciter, which delivers current at 125 volts. The damage caused by catastrophic earthquakes has always been an incentive towards more sophisticated building codes and requirements. In parallel to computer technology development, the engineers? attitude towards acquisition of more accurate results is increasing. This approach leads to designation of structural elements with more elaboration considering different aspects of their behavior. In addition, less simplified methods will be considered as satisfactory for analyzing such problems. The problem of soil-pile-structure interaction is one of the phenomena that can be included in this category. In general, there are two methods by which the study of soil-pile interaction phenomenon is studied. These include direct and sub-structuring methods. The sub-structuring approach relies on the linear or slightly non-linear behavior of soil since it employs the results of kinematic interaction analyses for inertial interaction studies. In the past, the kinematic interaction between pile-soil was considered as negligible. This was due to the softer nature of the surrounding soil that increased the time period of vibrations. However, more research revealed that although this approach was consistent in many cases, there were some sites where the time period decreased. This was due to the material properties of the foundation and the soil, in a way that caused the frequency of vibration meet natural frequency of the system. The second type of interaction is the inertial interaction which reflects the effect a structure on top exerts on the oscillation experienced by the foundation. This paper examines the impact of vertical load on the inertial interaction by virtue of impedance functions. Three different load cases for the structure at the top of a pile foundation were considered for the analyses conducted in this study. The changes in the stiffness and damping of the system by frequency are studied and finally, the results are presented.

This report describes a tool to engage and/or place a Bureau of Mines type gage to measure borehole deformation in a horizontal , 1½ - inch - diameter , stress relief borehole . The tool was successfully used at a borehole depth of 105 feet . Practical usage up to borehole depths of 200 feet might be realized . The tool was designed to work inside EX- size ( 1½ - inch ID ) diamond - drill drive casing used as drill rod and through which the deformation gage is guided into an EX- size stress relief borehole . Through laboratory experiments it was found that by exercising a reasonable amount of care the deformation gage could be placed at a point within a ± .01 foot distance of a predetermined depth in a horizontal EX- size hole and that the deformation measuring piston or plunger of the gage could be oriented in the borehole within 0.5 ° of a preselected angle of orientation in a vertical plane .

"New embankments were constructed mostly on soft clays as part of interstate I69 extension in southern Indiana. The embankments serve as bridge abutments and as part of the fill sections along the interstate extension alignment. The height of the embankments range from 50-ft to 125-ft with a maximum foundation thickness of about 75-ft. The foundation soils comprise relatively high compressible fine grained soils. A fully coupled Hydro-Mechanical numerical simulations were conducted for optimizing the construction stages of the embankments. The objective of the staged construction is to allow for sufficient effective stress and undrained shear strength gain to ensure foundation stability under the stage load. Wick drains were utilized to shorten the drainage path and thus accelerate achieving the required undrained shear strength. The extensive field investigation and laboratory testing programs provided a good understanding of the subsurface conditions and allowed the use of a relatively advanced soil constitutive model in the numerical simulations of the staged construction. The effectively designed instrumentation program allowed for monitoring the settlement and pore water dissipation during construction. The pore water pressure, and surface and subsurface settlements from the numerical model predictions reasonably agreed with the instrumentation data over the construction period.INTRODUCTIONThe stability of soft fine grained foundation soils due to embankment construction is dependent on the undrained shear strength of such soils. The permeability, compressibility, and drainage boundaries control the foundation soils response (settlement magnitude and rate) to loading. The settlement magnitude is a function of minerology and soil structure. The settlement rate which is equivalent to the rate of excess pore water pressure dissipation is a function of the soil permeability and drainage boundary. The dissipation rate control the evolution of effective stress and thus the gain of undrained shear strength. As such, if the increase in total applied load is controlled such that enough time is granted for the evolution of the total stresses into effective stresses, then the stability of the foundation soils is enhanced by the gain of the undrained shear strength. The controlled application of the total stress is the definition of the staged construction. From the definition of the staged construction, it is obvious that the process is a coupling of the hydraulic and mechanical responses of the foundation soils."

Iron ore pellet feed pressing has been one of the first and most successful applications of High- Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) in the minerals industry. Vale S.A. has been one of the pioneers in this application, currently with six HPGRs in operation in the pelletising plants of the Complexo de Tubarão (Brazil). In spite of the important advances in the technology, risks still exist when scaling-up the process from small-scale information. The present work takes advantage of the recent advances in the mathematical modelling of the HPGR performance, using the population balance model to evaluate the modified Torres and Casali model prediction in iron ore pellet feed pressing for different scales of operation. Results are presented that compare the HPGR performance in different operational scales for iron ore pellet feed pressing, demonstrating the confidence of this model-based approach for scale-up to full-scale HPGRs used in pressing iron ore concentrates. Thickening is an essential process in the mining industry and currently one of the most costeffective technologies for recovering water from tailings streams. Improved performance of thickeners can lead to significant energy savings, and increased recovery of water close to the mill. Its performance is directly affected by the rheological properties of slurry at the raking zone. To further understand the dynamics of slurry inside thickeners, a multiphase particle-in-cell method (MP-PIC), is used to investigate its behaviour on a sliding channel. Parameters like particle-size distribution (PSD), rheological properties, and domain discretisation were benchmarked to study its influence on highly dense flows. The slurry concentration by weight of the samples ranged between 60 to 70% of solids by mass, under which conditions it is known to behave like a non-newtonian fluid. An experimental flume, 0.2 m wide and 2 m long, was used for validation under different angles and slurry composition. Visual analysis of the slurry height and shape, as well as velocity measurements, were compared with numerical data. The preliminary results show the ability of MP-PIC method to represent different types of highly dense flows, while still being computationally affordable and practical for industrial use. Componentes de alto custo como rodas ferroviárias estão em pleno desenvolvimento a fim de aumentar o desempenho em operação. Para isso, diversos materiais microligados têm sido testados para obter melhores propriedades mecânicas e metalúrgicas. Esses materiais estão fortemente sujeitos a fraturas devido às solicitações térmicas e mecânicas durante o trabalho. Muitas dessas fraturas frágeis são ocasionadas por propagação de trinca, impacto, fadiga ou alguma falha metalúrgica. Essas fraturas e riscos operacionais vêm aumentando gradativamente com as maiores cargas transportadas. Portanto, novos materiais e processos produtivos devem ser exaustivamente testados a fim de garantir alto desempenho e confiabilidade. O objetivo deste trabalho é avaliar as propriedades dos materiais atuais e de diferentes composições de aços microligados de rodas ferroviárias de vagões, fabricadas pelos processos de fundição e forjamento. As amostras foram submetidas a ensaios metalográficos, mecânicos e de tenacidade à fratura. Foram avaliadas rodas convencionais, microligadas ao vanádio e microligadas ao nióbio. Nas rodas forjada e fundida, foram observadas propriedades de tração e dureza similares, e superioridade para o microligado em relação ao aço convencional. As rodas forjadas apresentaram melhor resistência ao impacto e a tenacidade a fratura, destacando-se a microligada ao nióbio.

Os procedimentos de dimensionamento de juntas parafusadas devem corresponder adequadamente às condições impostas na prática, para garantir projetos de alta confiabilidade. Por isso, este estudo tem o objetivo de evoluir na compreensão do comportamento mecânico de juntas parafusadas submetidas à carga axial externa. Para tal foram realizadas simulações numéricas variando a pré-carga de aperto, o comprimento do parafuso, o atrito entre os componentes, a posição de aplicação da carga externa e os materiais dos membros apertados, de modo a verificar a parcela da carga externa transferida ao parafuso. Todos os fatores analisados alteram o comportamento mecânico da junta, exceto o atrito entre os componentes. A transmissão da carga ao parafuso se comporta de maneira não-linear pelo aumento da carga externa. Além disso, existe um patamar de carga externa abaixo do qual não há transferência de carga ao parafuso.

Este trabalho foi realizado com o objetivo de identificar os motivos das trocas prematuras dos segmentos da máquina de lingotamento contínuo 1 da ArcelorMittal Tubarão e indicar propostas de engenharia para aumentar a sua confiabilidade e disponibilidade operacional . A metodologia utilizada foi a estratificação dos dados históricos, coletados no sistema informatizado de manutenção da empresa (SIM), para identificar, classificar e analisar as causas das trocas prematuras realizadas. A partir disso, baseado em conceitos de engenharia de manutenção, foram utilizados métodos de análises de falhas, como Diagrama de Pareto, Brainstorming, Diagrama de Ishikawa e Matriz Esforço x Impacto para elaboração de propostas de plano de ação modelo 5W1H visando à eliminação dos problemas.

The Folsom Area Stormwater Improvement Project is part of SFPUC’s flood resilience efforts under the Sewer System Improvement Program. This 4,000-foot-long, 12-footinside- diameter tunnel will help reduce the risk of flooding in San Francisco’s low-lying Inner Mission neighborhood. The project is in a high seismic hazard zone and extends through a complex geologic corridor that includes full-face soft, compressible Bay Mud, Colma Sands, and full-face rock with several stretches of mixed-face conditions. Additional challenges include removal of 99 piles beneath an existing box sewer, tunneling under commuter rail tracks, and an underground tie-in. This paper examines these challenges and how they are being addressed.

The Thaumasia Joint-Venture, composed of Bouygues Travaux Publics, Soletanche- Bachy and Bessac, completed the construction of the underground section of line 2 of the Nice tramway, which comprised a 3.2 km twin track tunnel and four underground stations, in a particularly complex urban and geotechnical context. The density of the surface structures, as well as the presence of many historic buildings on its route made the construction of the tunnel even more sensitive, with a settlement threshold of Half an Inch. The joint venture faced a complex subsoil, varying from one extreme to another from highly plastic clay layers to fibrous peat and to cobbles with very high permeability, with artesian ground water, and with unforeseen anthropogenic obstacles in the tunnel section Due to the diversity of the problems encountered and their variability over short distances, the construction of the underground section of the Nice tramway, in its very sensitive urban context, undeniably constituted an unprecedented challenge.

A thermodynamic model for a priori predictions of arsenic and antimony impurity capacity in Ni-Cu mattes and slags was developed based on the Reddy-Blander (RB) capacity model. The As and Sb capacities were calculated a-priori considering the RB capacity model in Ni-Cu mattes and FeO-FeO1.5-MgO-CuO0.5-NiO-SiO2 slag at 1573 K and 0.1 to 1 atm partial pressure of SO2. The results showed an excellent agreement between the model calculated and experimental data of arsenic and antimony capacities between the mattes and slag. The impurity capacity model developed here, can be extended for prediction of impurity capacities in multi-component base metal slags and base metal mattes. Such a priori predictions of impurity capacities can lead to develop or improve the efficiency of impurity removal from the base metal smelting, converting and refining processes.

Over the past twenty years, significant advances have been made in the field of microalloying steels and associated applications, among which one of the most successful application cases is development and application of heavy-gauge X80 coil with high temperature processing HTP practice used for China's Second West-East pipeline, the longest X80 pipe in the world. During this process, HTP design concept has been sucessfully applied to develop 18.4mm X80 coil with demanding low-temperature fracture toughness requirements. In the meanwhile, China's metallurgical workers have further optimized HTP design concept with the aid of powerful rolling mill and coiling equipment, and made it possible to develop 21.4mm X80 coil used for Russia-China East line. In the paper, we would simply review the development history of high-strength pipeline steels, and then give more priority to the fundamental points for sucessful development of 18.4mm X80 coil and SSAW pipe, which paved the way for subsequent development of 21.4mm X80 coil and SSAW pipe. Finally, we would present the test results of mass production and burst tests, and dispel the suspicion that SSAW pipes made of X80 coil are more qualified to resist ductile fracture.

Due the fast growing of pig iron and steel in the last years associate with some mineral resources changes (Hematite?Itabirite), has been checking the sinter feed degradation. The typical sinter feed (0.15;-6.3 mm) has become limited and the rapid growing production resulted in more and more fine ore (< 150 µm) availability in the market. The sinter plant operators are facing several new challenges since the mixing and granulation- and the sintering behavior of the fines containing mixtures often differs from the traditional sinter feed´s behavior. The utilization of fines in the sinter plants might increase the process water consumption required for the mixing and granulation process or even the solid fuel consumption, which effects the operational cost of the plant significantly. The current study presents an overview about Outotec´s laboratory facilities and competence regarding the mixing and granulation of fines in different equipments. The usage of high intensity mixers (HIM) – vertical and horizontal as well – showed to be the most effective, based in cold agglomeration tests in small scale, in case of fine ore handling. Permeability and particle size distribution curves are used to evaluate and demonstrate the efficiency of the different equipments. Outotec´s ”Know-How” with the different type of mixer and the modern laboratory facilities provide an excellent opportunities to optimize the mixing and granulation procedure and utilize up to 100 % pellet feed

Digital optical microscopy (DOM) and automated SEM-based (ASEM) mineralogy systems (MLA, QEMSCAN) have experienced significant developments within the last decade. However these developments have been independent from each other and the two mineralogical techniques have so far not yet been integrated to combine the strengths and technical benefits of both analytical platforms. This detailed comprehensive mineralogical information is critical support for geometallurgy.Major hardware and software advances in DOM in the last few years have provided important new capabilities with potential applications to automated mineralogy. These technological advances have been largely driven by sectors outside mining (eg medical pathology) and have not yet been widely adopted within the minerals industry. The advent of DOM offers significantly more automated mineralogy capabilities than traditional expert-mineralogist driven optical microscopy. This is based on advances in automated image acquisition, high resolution cameras for digital imaging, imaging of large areas through mosaic options, integration of multiple layers and application of advanced image analysis techniques.Ongoing research involves combining the outputs of DOM and ASEM-based microscopy to create new capabilities for integrated microscopy based on development of advanced cross-platform image fusion and data integration between DOM and ASEM (exploiting the benefits of both analytical platforms). This requires non-linear image registration and transfer of mineralogical identification from ASEM to DOM systems using sophisticated image manipulation and data analysis software.Examples will be given of image fusion and data registration for a range of different ore types. Image fusion techniques are demonstrated using a porphyry copper deposit sample where sulfides and precious metals are classified using the MLA and gangue mineralogy obtained from DOM images. Data integration enables creation of a library containing optical property variability information for minerals identified by the MLA; thus reducing the reliance on skilled mineral identification by supplementing human interpretation

Most coal mine roofs in the Appalachian region consist of laminated shale, which is prone to brittle failure. Accurate modeling of shale roofs is vital for studying cutter failures of these shale roofs, and ordinary and formational bedding planes play a significant role in the response off the shale roof to mining-induced stresses. This paper presents a robust method for constructing three-dimensional shale roof models using limited borehole cores and leveraging image processing techniques. The approach begins with image extraction from shale cores. Then, we extract the portions that feature the core and employ image-stitching techniques to merge them seamlessly. Once the images are stitched, they are duplicated horizontally and merged to create a cross-sectional plane image representing a shale roof. This roof cross-sectional plane image serves as an input to our proprietary Digital Image Processing (DIP) algorithm, which is adept at extracting ordinary bedding planes (interfaces that represent color transitions between a single shale unit). The extraction process involves transforming discrete core points (ordinary bedding plane pixels) into continuous lines representing ordinary bedding planes. Finally, extending this method into the third dimension, the model is further extrapolated to form a comprehensive three-dimensional shale roof. Through this process, the geometry information of ordinary bedding planes can be extracted for each type of shale in cores, including sandy shale, gray shale, dark shale, etc. This work bridges the gap between limited core data and comprehensive 3D geological modeling, offering valuable insights into identifying and quantifying the variations in different shale roof geologies.

"The Ernest Henry Mining (EHM) ore body is an iron oxide copper gold deposit with an average grade of 1.1 percent copper, 0.5 g/tonne gold and 22 percent magnetite. At the end of 2009, EHM converted the ball mill media charge from forged steel to high chrome media. At high pH values (above 10.5), forged media is passivated, so as the pH of the system drops the media corrosion rate increases and floods the system with corrosion products, affecting flotation. As the high chrome media is much more inert, pH has less of an effect on copper flotation response. Given this, the pH in the roughers was dropped from 10.6 to 9.6 and it was found that there was a slight increase in copper recovery and no statistical change in either the rougher or final copper concentrate grades for copper and gold. With the reduction in pH, there was a noticeable reduction in lime usage from 0.85 kg of lime per tonne of ore processed to 0.55 kg/t. This reduction in lime is equivalent to approximately $700,000 per annum at current production rates.INTRODUCTION The Xstrata Copper Ernest Henry Mine (EHM) is situated 38 km north east of Cloncurry, Australia. The mine began as an open-cut operation in 1998 and transitioned to a multi-sourced operation in December of 2011, utilising ore from the newly completed underground mine in addition to ore mined from the Mount Margaret Mining operations. EHM produces a combined copper gold concentrate containing 25 000 t of copper and 35 000 oz of gold annually, utilising a three stage grinding circuit along with a four stage flotation circuit. In addition to this EHM also produces 1 000 000 t of magnetite concentrate annually via a further grinding and three stage magnetic separation circuit. Based on metallurgical test work performed by Magotteaux between 2002 and 2008, the step to change from forged steel media to 18 percent chrome media was taken in 2009 in a bid to alter the pulp chemistry to improve the flotation performance in the plant (Greet, Kinal, Twomey, & Peatey, 2010). This plant trial resulted in: • Increased dissolved oxygen levels within the pulp, • A ball mill discharge Eh shift of 25 mV to more oxidising pulp potentials, and • An EDTA extractable iron percentage reduction. These improvements in the pulp chemistry resulted in an increase of 1.7 ± 0.6 percent in copper recovery and an increase of 2.9 ± 1.7 percent in gold recovery. As the plant trial using high chrome media was successful, the use of the media was adopted as the standard for the ball mill. This implementation opened the door for further process improvements around the flotation circuit."

The aced for reliable reserves of the essential element, manganese, has been a continuing concern of the Federal Government for more than three decades. Because of the increasing vulnerability of outside sources of supply efforts have been intensified to find a means for beneficiating United States domestic deposits. The deposits of most interest would of necessity be near, or have access to, suitable transportation to processing plants. The Georgia manganiferous iron deposits represent some 10 million tons4 of ore readily available to southern iron and steel industries, if a manganese recovery process capable of functioning in the presence of large quantities of iron can be developed. In addition, a successful method for beneficiating the Georgia ore could produce a significant quantity of high-grade iron concentrate. The Differential sulfatization process developed 47 the Bureau of Mines5 seemed to be well suited for this application, particularly because it results in low concentrations of iron in the leach liquors with relatively complete extractions of manganese. In this process, manganese in the presence of iron is preferentially reacted with sulfur dioxide at elevated temperatures and subsequently extracted with water.

If dynamite is used in hot metal mines, it may be subject to decomposition, and the increase in nitroglycol vapour under the high temperatures causes bad headaches of workers. Also the explosives containing ammonium nitrate are very dangerous when mixed with sulfide ores at a high temperature!. Therefore we developed a heat-resistant water gel explosive which is safe to be handled at these hot metal mines.
