"Adsorption isotherms of hexyl mercaptan vapour on synthetic sphalerite, zinc sulphide and zinc oxide were de-termined with a gravimetric McBain-Baker micro balance incorporated in the B.E.T. apparatus. Isotherms are given for hexyl mercaptan on synthetic sphalerite at 25°C, 0.5°C and 50°C; on zinc sulphide at 25°C and 1.5°C; and on zinc oxide at 25°C. All these isotherms are sigmoidal, with a definite change in slope at or close to the mono-layer. The amount of mercaptan adsorbed below the monolayer increases almost linearly with relative pressure to P/P0 = 0.8.Above this value, the amount adsorbed increases very rapidly with relative pressure. Hysteresis loops appear in the isotherms for all adsorption-desorption cycles. These loops are completely reversible. It is not possible to desorb the mercaptan monolayer from any of the adsorbents, even at elevated temperatures."

"The use of simulation modeling in the primary metals industry (including mining, smelting, and metals processing) is expanding as significant cost-benefits can be realized by companies employing capital intensive processes. The economic scale and complexity of operations found in this industry is well-suited to applications using this ""what-if&apos; computer modeling technique, ranging from proof-of-concept projects to testing facility design or configuration, and determining resource requirements. More recently this technique is being used to support on-going planning and scheduling for operations using the simulation as the engine to derive the best schedule. With increased computer processing capability, deterministic models are now being developed to capture the workings of a production system or conversion process, allowing real-time monitoring and scheduling of these operations. This paper presents a sample of some recent discrete-event simulation modeling applications that demonstrate the capability and benefits of this technique in the primary metals industry. These include the use of simulation to support the long-range planning of underground mining operations; the modeling of a metals supply chain network that employs a multi-modal distribution system; the scheduling of a metals coil finishing process using a deterministic simulation model; and a more detailed description of the use of simulation to model furnace and converter aisle activities within a smelter operation in Northern Canada."

The effect of jointing on fragmentation by blasting was investigated experimentally and numerically. Firstly the experimental results were presented. Then the numerical modelling based on the experiments was performed. The same conclusions can be obtained based on both experiments and numerical modelling.

OUTCROPS of gypsum rock near the present site of the city of Gland Rapids, Mich., were known to fur traders early in the nineteenth century. However, the deposits seemed without value and were not worked for some time. So far as cat1 be learned, Michigan gyp- sum was first used by a plasterer who settled in Grand Rapids in 1834 as a member of its fourteenth white family. In building a house for one of the early traders, be used some otnamental stucco mouldings manufactured from the local gypsum deposits for decorations in the gables and around some circular windows. The gypsum was broken out with a hammer, ground in an Indian corn mill, and burlled in a caulclron kettle,. After two attempts, the ornaments were successfully set, and remained on the house until it was destroyed by fire in 1850.

IN this paper are presented the results of a complete statistical survey of the enrolment, courses and degrees, and the employment situation of recent graduates in all of the 46 institutions in the United States, including Alaska, and four of the six schools in Canada that grant degrees in mineral technology. The data were collected by the writer by means of a questionnaire in December, 1933, to which all the institutions, except one, replied. Included also are data of a similar study made by the writer in May, 1933, for the S. P. E. E. summer session of mining and metallurgical teachers at the University of Wisconsin and published in the Journal of Engineering Education for December. 1933. Some of the data of a paper of the writer&apos;s entitled, "The Trend of Mineral Engineering Student Enrolment in the United States," read at the A. I. M. E. meeting on Feb. 16. 1931, are given for comparison. Acknowledgment is made to all the administrative officers of the institutions who took the time from their busy lives to supply the in- formation asked for. Immediately After Each Accident The Respective State ..Authorities Ordered Close Investigations To Be Made, With The View Of Establishing The Cause And Suggesting Remedies To Prevent Recurrence. Representatives Of The Technologic Branch Of The U. S. Geological Survey, To Whom The Investigation Of Mine-Accidents Had Recently Been Delegated By The Secretary Of The Interior,. Visited The Mines And Co-Operated With The Local Authorities In Their Determinations. THE reconnaissance of the Goldfield mining-district, described in this paper, was made in May and June, 1905, and, though this time was too short for a complete report, the work accomplished may serve as a basis for more thorough future research. Dr. Berkey has examined the rocks collected by myself, and I am using his classifications. As a result of further field-work, and Dr. Berkey&apos;s examination of the rocks, this paper is an elaboration and correction of my views expressed in the Gold-field Sun, May 12, 1905. The sketch-map, Fig. 1, illustrates the geology of the Goldfield mining-district. Goldfield is an eruptive complex, consisting of alaskite (binary granite), hornblende-andesite, hornblende-dacite, rhyolite, pyroxene-andesite, pyroxene-dacite (sometimes containing, a small quantity of olivine), quartz-felsite, olivine-pyroxene-ande¬site, and basalt. Considering this list to be arranged in the order of eruption, the age-sequence of the rocks conforms to Richthofen&apos;s law, formulated in 1868. From his observations in Europe and America, propylite, andesite, trachyte, rhyolite and basalt, occurring together, succeed one another. In a general way, the medium and more acidic rocks precede the most asic-a result supposed by some to have arisen from their relative position beneath the surface, and due to a rude stratification by gravity in the original cooling magma during the older history of the earth, or to the same differentiation occurring during a quiescent (molten ?) period preceding eruption, being aided by the ease with which acidic rocks, mixed with water vapors, become fusible. A soldagem por brasagem a vácuo promove a união de materiais dissimilares com alto valor agregado. Este trabalho visa estudar a interação química do nitreto de boro hexagonal (h-BN) na interface de ligação brasada do par Kovar®/h-BN. As variáveis de processo são determinantes para formação da junta brasada metalurgicamente estável. O trabalho estuda a molhabilidade do h-BN quando em contato com ligas de adição do sistema eutético Ag-Cu durante a solidificação. Foram conduzidos ensaios no h-BN a fim de caracterizar sua aplicação no sensor de posição do feixe de elétrons (BPM) do projeto do Sirius, e as propriedades que influenciam o seu processamento durante a brasagem, como coeficiente de expansão térmica e molhabilidade superficial. Os ensaios de brasagem com a liga Ag-Cu-4,5Ti, mostraram boa molhabilidade e espalhamento na superfície, favorecendo a formação da junta sem descontinuidades. As reações na interface são complexas no sentido de formação de novas fases e intermetálicos e, influenciadas pela seleção dos materiais, que possuem diferentes temperaturas de fusão e coeficientes de expansão térmica. Os resultados indicam que a seleção da liga com Ti, que é o elemento de ativação, promove a interação na superfície do h-BN com os demais materiais da junta.

Durante muitos anos, as ligas convencionais foram base para o desenvolvimento de novos materiais metálicos, com propriedades melhores que as até então conhecidas. No entanto, na última década, as Ligas de Alta Entropia (LAE) trazem uma nova abordagem para a produção de materiais avançados, com excelentes propriedades e potencial para diversas aplicações. Em particular, as ligas do sistema Al-Co-Cr-Fe-Ni também se destacam por promoverem uma classe de LAE de baixa densidade e têm sido foco de inúmeros estudos no meio acadêmico atual. O presente artigo traz um estudo de otimização da preparação metalográfica da liga AlCo2Cr2FeNi2, a partir de 3 rotas diferentes de polimento e suas análises via microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV) e difração de Raios X (DRX). Além disso, foram avaliadas as modificações estruturais da liga em função de um tratamento térmico de solubilização (1050 ºC por 1 hora seguido de resfriamento em água). Os resultados das análises demonstraram a rota de polimento eletrolítico promissora para a caracterização da LAE em questão e a análise conjunta dos resultados de DRX e MEV, somado ao confronto com a literatura, permitiram identificar as fases presentes e suas modificações microestruturais em função do tratamento térmico.

Neste trabalho, foram obtidos compósitos poliméricos de Óxido de Grafite (GO) incorporado em Poli(metaclilato de metila) (PMMA). A obtenção do Óxido de Grafite foi realizada pelo método de Hummers modificado. Em seguida foi ainda adicionada uma etapa secundária de tratamento térmico à 1000ºC no GO obtido a fim de expandir as lamelas de grafite e remover os grupos funcionais aderidos durante o ataque ácido do grafite. As cargas obtidas foram caracterizadas com o auxílio das técnicas de Difração de Raios-X (DRX), constatando a expansão das folhas após o tratamento térmico. O estudo comparativo dos compósitos de matriz polimérica com 3 % de concentração de GO antes e após o tratamento térmico foi realizado com o objetivo de entender a contribuição nas propriedades reológicas do polímero com a adição da carga de GO. Os resultados reológicos apresentaram um aumento da viscosidade complexa tanto no ensaio de Varredura de Tempo, quanto no Cisalhamento Oscilatório de Pequenas Amplitudes (COPA).

Contamination of by-product: sulfuric acid, by dissolved oxides of nitrogen (&apos;nitrates&apos;) occurs under some operating conditions encountered in sulfide roasting and smelting,, notably when oxygen-enriched air is used. This &apos;nitrate&apos; lowers the value of the acid and increases the effective cost of smelter gas desulfurization. The present paper describes measures taken at one smelter acid plant to remove this &apos;nitrate&apos;; it discusses the mechanism by which &apos;nitrates&apos; in some cases concentrate in one part of the plant and can be purged for more efficient treatment; and it describes a process developed by C-I-L Inc. for removal of &apos;nitrates&apos; from such a purge stream. Advantages of the process include very low reagent cost, recovery of all sulfuric acid values and safe handling of nitrous fumes.

After five years of operation, the plant&apos;s output has been increased from the design capacity level of 2 M.T.P.Y. to 2.5 M.T.P.Y. Steps taken in equipment modifica- tion, improvements in process control, and changes in maintenance procedures are described.

A utilização de carvão vegetal na fabricação do ferro-gusa tem ganhado destaque devido a suas vantagens ambientais em comparação ao coque. A necessidade de suprir a demanda de consumo de carvão vegetal pelas siderurgias faz com que os produtores busquem maior produtividade e qualidade através da busca constante na redução do tempo de produção do carvão. O presente trabalho apresenta o desenvolvimento de um modelo matemático tri-dimensional transiente, para simulação da secagem, carbonização e resfriamento no interior de um forno retangular de alvenaria. Foi desenvolvido um modelo acoplado baseado na solução das equações de conservação da quantidade de movimento, energia e espécies químicas. As soluções das equações diferenciais que representam os fenômenos são obtidas através da técnica de volumes finitos. Ao longo do processo de carvoejamento, o modelo considera a transferência de massa e calor associada à cinética de reação de cada componente. O modelo é tridimensional e transiente, sendo capaz de prever detalhes dos fenômenos no interior do forno e sua evolução temporal o que possibilita o controle das fases de fabricação do carvão vegetal.

Since 2019, approximately two dozen international battery recycling companies have been operating at the commercial or pilot scale [1]. However, current process capacity does not exceed 100,000 tons of end-of-life (EOL) lithium-ion batteries (LIB) per year, and the current recycling rate is only about 5% in North America [2-3]. Recycling metals from EOL LIBs is not only essential to waste minimization and environmental stewardship, but also a source of critical materials, which can contribute towards supply chain stabilization. LIB recycling can be roughly divided into three categories: direct recycling, pyrometallurgy, and hydrometallurgy. Direct recycling seeks to retain as much of the manufactured effort with minimum chemical processing [4]. The evolution of battery designs and chemical compositions are challenges to this approach [5-6]. Pyrometallurgical processes are robust and flexible allowing a broad spectrum of batteries with minimum pre-processing requirements. Some of the matrix issues are solved through combustion of some constituents. Smelting is strongly tied to fossil energy and air emissions are a concern. In addition, pyrometallurgical processes are not stand alone, as hydrometallurgical refining normally required to separate and recover the metals of interest (Co, Ni, and Cu) from the produced alloy and Li from the slag [7]. Hydrometallurgical processes can be highly selective and efficient in recovering high purity materials [8]. In general, hydrometallurgical processes are considered cleaner and less costly than high temperature processes [4,9-10]. Extensive chemical consumption and waste generation significantly increase the operating costs and overall environmental impact of the hydrometallurgical processes [11]. Leaching of metals from LIBs is dominated by the mixture of sulfuric acid (1 to 4 M H2SO4) and hydrogen peroxide (1 to 15 wt.% H2O2) [10]. Although organic acids have been tested as lower environmental impact alternatives, the reported pulp density operations are low < 60 g/L [10-11]. For the H2SO4/H2O2 leachates, high leaching efficiencies >90% are reported for Co, Ni, Mn, and Li from cathode materials at temperatures over 40 ⁰C and pulp densities between 30 to 200 g/L [9-10]. H2O2 acts as reducing agent to convert Co+3 and Mn+4 into their soluble forms, Co+2 and Mn+2 [12]. Despite the claims of H2O2 being a clean reducing agent [13], production of H2O2 has significant environmental impacts as determined by life-cycle analyses [13-14]. Moreover, the costs and risks associated with H2O2 transportation and storage cannot be ignored [15].

The channel-type non-mechanical stirring production process is a new developed technology for emulsion explosives in recent years. It removes traditional equipment such as mechanical-mixing emulsification, mechanical-mixing sensitization, matrix pumping, and explosive pumping, and has been applied in China. This technique achieves a fusion of higher intrinsic safety and lower cost, as well as the excellent quality of products and high efficiency of production. The emulsion particle diameter is about 0.5μm. The storage period of emulsion explosive produced with span-80 emulsifier is more than 7 months.

A qualidade de fabricação de tubos de aço sem costura está relacionada ao processo de tratamento térmico. O controle do comportamento dos fornos industriais de tratamento térmico é de grande importância de modo a garantir a qualidade do produto. É necessário conhecer os parâmetros de operação dos fornos, assim como suas influências nas variáveis de processo. Este estudo avaliou as extensões do efeito do tipo de alinhamento dos tubos no interior do forno nas temperaturas dos canais de fumaça, temperatura do forno, temperatura do tubo, pressão interna do forno, demanda dos queimadores e consumo de gás natural. Diferentes alinhamentos podem impactar no escoamento da massa de gás queimado dentro do forno e consequentemente ter um efeito nas variáveis de processo avaliadas. Para determinar o tipo de alinhamento mais adequado do ponto de vista da qualidade do material final e da melhor eficiência energética, testes foram realizados durante uma corrida em um forno de austenização, na qual se alternou entre os diferentes tipos de alinhamento, medindo-se as variáveis de processo estudadas. Os resultados foram analisados utilizando-se técnicas estatísticas, como ANOVA. Ao final observou-se que certos parâmetros são impactados pelo tipo de alinhamento do tubo, sobretudo a temperatura de fumos e pressão interna no forno. As variações foram relativamente pequenas, principalmente pelo fato da principal variável controladora do processo, a temperatura do forno, possuir uma dinâmica de resposta lenta.

A autorredução é afetada por características das matérias-primas tais como granulometria, porosidade, tipo e teor da fonte carbonácea, e também por características do ciclo de processamento imposto, taxas de aquecimento, tipo de atmosfera gasosa, temperatura média de processo. No presente trabalho objetiva-se, através de testes de termogravimetria, avaliar a cinética de autorredução e também o fluxo térmico associado, durante o processamento de diversas associações de finos de minério e fonte carbonácea. Com os resultados obtidos identificam-se condições que otimizam tanto a mistura autorredutora quanto o processamento, observando-se que em uma mesma faixa granulométrica, o maior conteúdo de Cfixo da fonte carbonácea e materiais mais reativos otimizam a cinética, em detrimento da maior quantidade volumétrica de partículas carbonáceas observada em amostras contendo carvões mais pobres em Cfixo. Taxas adequadamente controladas permitem a definição de instantes distintos para as diversas etapas fenomenológicas envolvidas no processamento da autorredução.

"The Bolivar Dam, located near the Village of Bolivar, Ohio is one of a system of dams designed to provide flood control and water conservation in the Muskingum Watershed. The Bolivar Dam is a “dry dam” that only impounds water during flood events. In order to address problematic seepage, which negatively affects the structural stability of the dam, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) designed a partial-depth and partial-length Seepage Barrier Wall (SBW) through the upstream slope of the dam. For this project, TREVIICOS constructed a 36 in (914 mm) positive SBW by plastic concrete panel wall method and excavated using hydromill and clamshell equipment. The plastic concrete was manufactured on-site, which allowed for enhanced quality control and prompt service. This required the installation, commissioning and operation of a concrete batch plant on-site. This paper presents the challenging aspects of the design, manufacture and placement of the plastic concrete for the SBW in order to meet contract strength and permeability requirements as well as workability requirements necessary for tremie concrete placement.Project General InformationBolivar Dam is located in Northeast Ohio (Fig. 1). It is one of a system of sixteen dam projects designed to provide flood control and water conservation in the Muskingum Basin, which covers 20 percent of the State of Ohio (Fig. 2). Bolivar Dam is on Sandy Creek, a tributary of the Tuscarawas River.The Dam has been constructed, operated and maintained by the USACE, for the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District. Its construction was completed in 1937 and it has been in operation for flood control since 1939.Bolivar Dam is a rolled earth fill dam, with a typical embankment section made of a central impervious core flanked upstream and downstream by a pervious outer shell with downstream rock toe. The embankment has a maximum height of 87 ft (26.5 m) and a crest length of 6,300 ft (1,920 m), and is comprised of the main embankment starting on the left abutment of about 1,500 ft (457 m) heading to the Northeast, followed by the terrace embankment of 4,800 ft (1,463 m) heading to the North. An upstream impervious blanket extends up to 500 ft (152 m) upstream of the dam along the majority of its length. The outlet works are to the left of the embankment, and consist of an intake structure with six gates, followed by two outlet conduits that finish in a stilling basin. To the left of the outlet works is the uncontrolled emergency spillway, which was doubled in width to 540 ft (165 m) in 1989, and excavated material utilized for construction of a stability berm against the upstream face of the main embankment. A concrete parapet wall was also installed along the upstream side of the crest during this work. In 1982, a toe drain, downstream filter berm and line of 35 relief wells were installed. The filter berm was recently extended an additional 200 ft (61.0 m) downstream and granular filters were placed over an approximate 2000 linear ft (610 m) reach of the lower terrace slope.
