"It is generally agreed that dust characteristics play a role in the development of Coal Workers' Pneumoconiosis (CWP). Unfortunately, there is a serious lack of information on what the characteristics of mine dust actually are and how they vary among different mining regions, coal seams, etc. This paucity of data can generally be attributed to the serious problems encountered in collecting sufficiently large quantities of dust for conventional analytical procedures.Personal samplers are widely used in coal mines for regulatory and enforcement purposes. Generally, these provide information only on the total (respirable) dust loading in the mine atmosphere and on the mineral matter (primarily quartz) content of the respirable dust. A procedure has been developed by which samples collected with a slightly modified personal sampler can be analyzed for particle size distribution, total mineral matter content and elemental composition, in addition to the standard mass and quartz measurements. These analyses could readily be performed on a routine basis. Shape analysis by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) could easily be included if appropriate shape criteria are established. Extension of the procedure to include the determination of complete size/specific gravity (composition) distributions is quite straightforward provided sufficiently large samples (at least 10 mg) can be collected. Typical sample sizes for a personal sampler carried by a miner for one shift range from about 0.5 to 2 mg.The basic procedure was developed and evaluated using synthetic mine dust prepared in the laboratory. Field tests in three working mines in Pennsylvania and West Virginia have confirmed the applicability of the approach to the real world. Particle size distribution measurements on mine dust collected in the modified personal sampler were found to agree closely with the results of simultaneous in situ measurements obtained using cascade impactors."

"Tensile strength of rock samples is measured by direct and indirect tensile tests in accordance with standard guidelines. Due to the difficulties in performing direct tensile test, the indirect tensile (Brazilian) test is conventionally carried out to obtain the ultimate tensile strength. A limited number of studies have been conducted to investigate the role of sample size (length to diameter ratio = L/D) in the stress distribution of the Brazilian test using numerical and analytical methods. These investigations showed that the tensile stress distribution along the loading diameter is not uniform. They also indicated that the difference between the tensile stress at the middle part and at the sides of the sample with higher L/D ratio is greater than that in the other samples.The objective of this study is to show the effect of tensile stress distribution on the fracture surface created by the Brazilian test from a morphological point of view on the samples with different L/D ratio. Hence, a series of fracture surfaces created using the Brazilian tests on the rock samples with L/D of 0.5, 0.75, 1, 1.25 and 1.5 were investigated.In this study, all fracture surfaces were scanned by a 3D laser profilommeter. A number of roughness profiles parallel and perpendicular to loading axis have been selected from the samples with different L/D ratio and spacing of 1 mm. The results show that the roughness of the profiles perpendicular to the loading axis increases with an increase of L/D ratio, while the roughness of the profiles parallel to the loading axis decreases. Furthermore, some roughness profiles parallel to the loading axis were chosen and divided into three segments. The results revealed that the segment in adjacent to the upper loading platen possesses higher roughness than the other segments."

"VAUGHAN THOMPSON designed the Thompson retrievable diamond drill wedge and reaming assembly in 1948. Since 1950, the Hudson Bay Exploration and Development Company, Limited has used the method extensively. The wedge, setting tool, and reamer have been modified slightly since they were first introduced. In 1951, Mr. Thompson designed the Thompson arc cutter. The purpose of this tool is to decrease effectively the diameter of the arc cut, using standard drilling tools. This directional drilling device is usually employed when a branch hole is desired. The Thompson arc cutter has been used with success at Birch Lake, Saskatchewan, at the property of Cuprus Mines, Limited, Manitoba, and at Thompson Lake, Manitoba.UsesThe Thompson retrievable wedge provides a simple method for:(1) Re-drilling lost core sections(2) Re-sampling sections of old holes(3) By-passing lost tools Correcting the direction of a hole(4) Drilling a branch hole to obtain intersections at a higher elevation than the original holePrevious to the spring of 1951, the wedge was used only for the first four of these purposes. In a Bureau of Mines investigation of the dynamic compaction of mine hydraulic backfills, two basic forms of mechanical vibration inducers were used and compared for effectiveness of compaction. Internal compaction, using concrete probe vibrators of various sizes, and external compaction, using plate vibrators} were studied and evaluated for use in underground stopes. An aluminum plate, which was light and displaced sufficient volume to remain afloat in fluid fill, and a steel plate were both used in the external compaction tests. Efficiency of compaction was better in studies conducted with internal probe vibrators. Tests were conducted in an underground backfilled stope with three different-sized probe vibrators (2-, 4-, and 6-inch-diameter) to determine an approximate area of influence. Results showed the areas of influence to be approximately 3, 4, and 5 feet in diameter, respectively, for the three different probes. Physical properties of hydraulic slurries were determined; preferred grain-size distributions, water exudation properties, and water contents of hydraulic slurries are reported. The best compaction results were obtained with moderately well-graded, fully saturated backfills, with slow rates of water exudation, which were capable of remaining in a semifluid state during the compaction process.

"Sheeted vein gold deposits are characterised by multiple subparallel veins and free milling gold. In situ heterogeneity of mineralisation results in grade and process parameter variability, which will increase project risk. Measured variability is often enhanced by poorly designed sampling and test work protocols. Protocols that are optimised within the framework of the theory of sampling to suit the ore type, together with quality assurance/quality control systems, will reduce variability and provide fit-for-purpose results. The geometallurgical approach requires spatially distributed samples within a deposit to support variability modelling. Diverse attributes from core logging, mineralogical/textural determination and small-scale tests are used to measure variability. This contribution emphasises early stage geometallurgical intervention during project development. It presents a discussion of representative sampling in the context of the theory of sampling. Theoretical substantiation of leaching of clustered ultra-fine gold by the electro-photo activated cyanide and chloride solutions is given in the paper; and processes of activation of leach solution by electrolysis and photo-activation are described. Comparative experiments on electro-photo activated leaching of ultra-fine gold from refractory ores by cyanide and chloride solutions were carried out. The material for research is primary ore of the Pogromnoe deposit (Russian Federation, Trans-Baikal Territory). The ore is characterised by the minimum sulfide minerals and the organic carbon content. Gold in ores of this deposit is presented as mainly ultra-fine. Gold inclusions in quartz and silica-alumina minerals (metasomatic minerals) are ultra-fine. Sulfide minerals (2.5-3%) are presented in ore generally by pyrrhotine (gold content does not exceed 10 g/t). Standard cyanide technology provides 49.5% gold recovery. Photo-electro activated air saturated NaCN provides 69.9% gold recovery. Laboratory research of chloride-hypochlorite column leaching demonstrated that the electro-photo activated method provided 78.9 % gold recovery to pregnant leach solution. Chloride-hypochlorite photo-electro activated solution can provide higher level of gold recovery with shorter process duration (10 days) in comparison with cyanide (40 days). The final decision regarding the choice of leach solution has to be done on the basis of technical and economic calculations. "The CDM-LODIC method(Low Displacement and Control method), a modified the CDM(Cement Deep Mixing) method, reduces the ground displacement through the removal of in-situ soil equivalent to the amount of slurry injection using the continuous auger flight attached on the shaft above the conventional the CDM mixing tool. The reduction of ground displacement minimizes the impact on adjacent buildings and other infrastructures. Since the development of the CDM-LODIC in 1985, this method has been used for more than 900 projects with total volume of improved soils exceeding 5.3 million yd3 (7 million m3). The ground displacement that could be caused by deep soil mixing is controlled by balancing the volume of discharged soil and the volume of slurry injected for soil mixing. This paper presents the ground improvement work for the Sanriku Coast Expressway Project using the CDM-LODIC method to 1) control the ground displacement during ground improvement to minimize the impact to existing buildings and facilities and 2) utilize low height CDM-LODIC equipment to avoid potential damage to critical facilities in the vicinity of ground improvement area and avoid interference on the normal operation of the Ishinomaki Red Cross Hospital.INTRODUCTIONSanriku Coast Expressway is a reconstructed highway, which is part of an early restoration program to recover from the Eastern Japan Earthquake of March 11, 2011. This highway extends 223 mile (359 km) and connects the Pacific Coast regions of three prefecture of North Eastern Japan as shown in Figure 1. Along a section between Yamoto - Ishinomaki road, the highway was expanded from two lanes to four lanes to mitigate traffic congestion for the adjacent city center and hospital and to serve as an efficient transportation route for emergency or disaster relief needs as shown in Figure 2. Deep mixing ground improvement with an area replacement ratio of 50% was designed to provide settlement control under the new fill embankment of the expanded highway as shown in Figure 3. The original CDM treatment layout using 5.2ft (1.6 m) diameter columns is shown in Figure 4."

Bureau of Mines studies show than an electronic counter can be used for determining just concentrations from midget impinger samples collected in bituminous coal mines. A sample correlation coefficient of 0.91 for data obtained using the electronic counter and the Bureau of Mines microprojector procedures indicates a significant linear relationship between the methods. The electronic counter provides better counting precision and reduces analytical time.

The common glass machining process used in the market of Brazil’s civil construction generates tons of waste through the folder of that waste disposal out by the water used during machining. After drying the product is intended for landfill representing a great environmental liabilities since these deposited glass waste in the environment have a decomposition time greater than four thousand years due to its high chemical and mechanical resistance. Aiming to give a destination that addresses this waste disposal problem in the environment, much has been studied in an attempt to incorporate them into the mix cement to partially replace the sand. In this work it was decided to carry out specific studies using common traits comparing the stroke with sand with a dash with partial replacement of 30% of the sand for the glass machining residue was analyzed resistance compressive resulting in a potential good product.

THIS paper presents practical data to aid in the selection of a mine ventilating fan, and outlines considerations to be made to ensure satisfactory operation and optimum efficiency of the fan. Much has been published on the general subject of mine ventilation, but the writer has found few specific data on factors and considerations which govern the selection of a fan-data which should be available to the operator if his fan is to give satisfactory service within the range of the high-efficiency portion of its performance curve and deliver the specified air capacity when operating against the anticipated range of resistance of the mine. The total quantity of fresh air furnished by the ventilation system must be adequate to provide, and to ensure at all times, safe and healthful working conditions in the mine. It is assumed that the mine operator is able to determine the air quantities required for the various parts of the mine.

"Confidence in the design and stability of an undercut cemented rockfill (CRF) span requires a thorough understanding of its emplaced material properties. The unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of cast 6×12-inch QA/QC cylinders is typically used as an index test to track the performance of a backfill plant. However, these strengths need to be adjusted for oversize aggregate removal and sample size effects if used to estimate the emplaced UCS. UCS testing of 6×12, 12×24, and 18×36-inch cast CRF cylinders was used to quantify the relationship between readily available 6×12-inch QA/QC strength data and the emplaced UCS. Test results indicate that the UCS of 18×36-inch cylinders is roughly 40% of the 6×12-inch UCS for similarly compacted samples. Mine QA/QC data indicate that the UCS of CRF is highly dependent on the degree of compaction as measured by bulk density. Based on these results, knowledge of the emplaced CRF density compared to 6×12-inch QA/QC density is also necessary to estimate the emplaced UCS. The scale effect reported in this study is more pronounced, compared to current understanding of backfill properties discussed in the literature, and underscores the need for further site-specific testing. INTRODUCTION The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Spokane Mining Research Division (SRMD), in cooperation with Barrick Gold Corporation, is conducting research with the goal of determining a relationship between 6-inch QA/QC cylinder strengths and the in-place strength of cemented rockfill (CRF). CRF cylinders with dimensions (diameter × length) of 6×12, 12×24, and 18×36 inches were cast onsite at the Turquoise Ridge Joint Venture (TRJV) and Cortez Hills Underground (CHUG) mines using CRF mixed at the mines’ respective batch plants. UCS tests were performed after 28 days of curing to estimate the size correction factor for each mine’s CRF. This paper presents an overview of the mix designs, sample collections, testing methods, test results, and an estimate of the UCS size correction factor for CRF at these mines. BACKGROUND Underhand cut and fill mining methods utilizing cemented backfill are common in underground metal mines in the United States. These methods are advantageous for controlling weak or highly stressed rock mass conditions by creating an engineered material that can be placed in openings, forming a beam that provides a safe, stable back for the next undercut. Increased use of underhand methods in the last 30 years has greatly improved safety in many cut-and-fill mines. However, with the continual push for more efficient and cost effective mining, there is a need to thoroughly understand the geotechnical properties of cemented backfill to assist in designing safe, stable openings while optimizing costs and production schedules."

"Given the results of triaixial tests, regressions are commonly used to evaluate the parameters of failure criteria that model intact rock strength and to perform statistical inferences used to evaluate characteristic values defined in EC7. Statistical robustness of these inferences is affected if the basic hypothesis underlying regression are not met, namely homoscedasticity (constant variance of the errors). This paper presents analyses of 23 sets of triaxial tests, starting by the evaluation of the regression parameters of the Mohr-Coulomb linear criterion and of the Hoek-Brown non-linear criterion, followed by carrying several statistical tests to check the homoscedasticity null hypothesis of independence between the variance of intact rock strength and the confining stress.INTRODUCTIONThough rock engineering design is clearly included in the scope of Eurocode 7(EN1997-1), its implementation raised a wide discussion regarding the applicability of structural safety concepts to geotechnical design of construction works in or on rock masses. The basis of the limit state design philosophy adopted in EC7 is that, for each particular design situation, all the possible limit states for a structure, or part of it, shall be considered and that it shall be demonstrated that the likelihood of any limit state being exceeded is sufficiently small. Though EC7 allows the limit states to be verified by one or a combination of methods, use of calculations is by far the most used, and it is often confused with the EC7 itself. It involves using characteristic values of actions, ground properties and geometrical data, as well as obtaining their design values by the partial factor method.Characteristic value of a given material property is defined in Eurocode (EN 1990) as: “value of a material or product property having a prescribed probability of not being attained in a hypothetical unlimited test series. This value generally corresponds to a specified fractile of the assumed statistical distribution of the particular property of the material or product”. As regards the design value of a material or product property, according to the Eurocode it is a “value obtained by dividing the characteristic value by a partial factor”."

Aggregate producers nationwide well recognize the numerous problems often faced in securing local approval to open and operate new gravel pits and rock quarries. Similar problems are faced in Colorado, but this region also presents certain political, social, and geological complexities that have become particularly troublesome in the last 10 years. The gravity of the local permitting dilemma can be related directly to the worsening supply-demand imbalance for aggregates in the state's most populated area, the Front Range urban corridor, particularly the Denver metropolitan area. The drive to develop crushed-rock reserves to supplement dwindling alluvial supplies and to meet increasing regional growth demands was somewhat predictable but perhaps more a "last resort" alternative forced onto producers by a hesitant and often apathetic government.

We present an algorithm to integrate the uncertainties of mean activity rate and magnitude cumulative distribution function in the interval estimation of the primary seismic hazard parameters: the exceedance probability and the mean return period. The algorithm is applicable for both the parametric and nonparametric modeling of magnitude distribution. When the Gutenberg-Richter relation-based parametric model of magnitude distribution is used, the interval estimation of its parameters is based on the asymptotic normality of the maximum likelihood estimators. When the nonparametric kernel estimation of magnitude distribution is used, we apply the iterated bias-corrected and accelerated method for the interval estimation, based on the smoothed bootstrap and second-order bootstrap samples. Previous studies indicated that the uncertainty of mean activity rate significantly affects the interval estimates of hazard functions only when the activity rate is low and the inference period is not long (Orlecka-Sikora & Lasocki 2017). With increasing mean activity rate, the uncertainty of magnitude distribution dominates over the uncertainty of mean activity rate in the aggregated uncertainty of the hazard functions. The provided algorithm is generic and can be applied to capture the uncertainty of any multiparameter function from the uncertainties of its parameters. Here we present a further development of the algorithm developed by Orlecka-Sikora & Lasocki (2017) by presenting its implementation in the Traffic Light System approach. As an example of use, we present the confidence intervals estimation of hazard parameters for the datasets related to induced seismicity accompanying underground exploitation of copper ore in the Legnica-Głogów Copper District (LGCD) in Poland. The algorithm is under implementation to the EPISODES platform (https://tcs.ah-epos.eu/) - an IT platform that provides access to integrated research infrastructures of the Thematic Core Service of Anthropogenic Hazards (TCS AH) of EPOS (European Plate Observing System). The algorithm is also a component of the pilot developed within the EPOS SP project (No 871121), which aims to strengthen the interaction with the private sector and the added value for society. The pilot demonstrates the potential of the IS-EPOS platform software applications for the technology-related probabilistic assessment of time-dependent seismic hazard. The pilot supports a Traffic Light System approach. The current seismic hazard is compared to threshold values based on the exceedance probability for a given magnitude.

"The velocity of detonation of an explosive is one of its most important properties, because its performance depends markedly on the rate at which it releases its energy. Fortunately, the velocity of detonation is one of the few properties of an explosive that can be measured precisely. However, the velocity of detonation of an explosive may depend on several factors other than its chemical composition, such as density, physical state, degree of confinement, nature of confinement, and magnitude of initiating impulse. Presumably for an explosive of fixed chemical and physical properties there are certain limiting conditions of confinement and initiation under which the explosive will detonate at a maximum constant and uniform velocity. This velocity is its ""ideal"" velocity of detonation. It is obvious, however, that in order to evaluate performance properties of an explosive in all of its applications it may be necessary to measure its velocity of detonation under a number of conditions in which the velocity of detonation is far from the maximum ""ideal"" velocity.. Under certain-conditions the velocity of detonation may even,be,different at different points in the explosive.It is .relatively simple to determine the velocity of detonation of an explosive under a. standard set of conditions if one is free to use large quantities of the explosive and to form it into a convenient shape. Under these circumstances; one can use a thin column of explosive a meter or more in length. The time required for an explosion to travel the length of the column will not be less,of the order a few ten-thousandths of a second and can be readily and accurately measured .by means of the standard spark chronograph or by photographing the explosion with a rotating-drum camera. However in many applications the explosive charge may be of relatively small dimensions arid may not be in a form convenient for making velocity measurements and often may be enclosed in a case or other confining medium. It may be necessary to determine the velocity of detonation over distances of the order of a few centimeters, in which case the time intervals to be measured will be extremely small. For example, the time required for an explosion to traverse 1 centimeter of tetryl is of the order of 1.5 microseconds.Since no satisfactory method of determining time intervals of the order of magnitude of a few microseconds within an explosive charge was available,, at least not for all conditions that might be encountered in practice, it was necessary to develop a special electronic chronoscope which is capable of measuring time intervals as small as a microsecond with a fair degree of accuracy. This report describes the chronoscope and its application to measurements of velocities of detonation in explosives."

This paper aims to describe the reasons and methods to extend enterprise networks into underground mines. Currently mines use a number of communication networks for telephones, PLCs, two-way VHF radio and computer networking. Each system can have different wiring, protocols, converters and interfaces all which require expansion and maintenance. The convergence of voice, video and data using Ethernet and TCP/IP has the very real benefit of one ?wire? for underground networks. Now that the majority of underground equipment can communicate using TCP/IP, network convergence can offer reduced network expansion and maintenance costs. Cost savings are good, but the truly exciting aspect of network convergence using Ethernet is the low-cost, high speed wireless networking now available . These wireless networks offer an opportunity to facilitate mining automation even on a small budget. How would mine operators change they way they operate if they could gather vehicle location and data in real time? What about controlling equipment remotely? The list of applications is long and includes traffic control, dispatching, real-time ore blending, tele-operation, automated production reporting, vehicle health monitoring, elimination of paper forms and immediate network access for surveyors and geologists. An ideal converged network for underground mining would be robust, inexpensive, easy to expand, enable fast and secure connections while keeping voice communication performance equivalent or better than what is now provided by VHF radio

"Considerable research has been conducted on the anodic oxidation of methanol in fuel cells. The electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide in aqueous solutions to form methanol is the same reaction in reverse, i.e. CO2 + 6 H+ + 6 e- ? CH3OH + H2O. The same catalysts and conditions may operate for both reaction directions. This carbon dioxide reduction reaction, however, must be able to compete with the electrochemical reduction of water to form hydrogen gas. Thermodynamically, the reduction of CO2 to form CH3OH is slightly more favorable than the reduction of water. The use of nearly neutral electrolytes rather than acidic electrolytes makes the reduction of CO2 kinetically more favorable. The thermodynamics of various reaction steps are presented. Similarities exist with the electrochemical reduction of CO2 and the green-plant photosynthesis process that converts CO2 to carbohydrates.IntroductionVirtually all of the oxygen in the earth’s atmosphere is of biological origin having been generated by green-plant photosynthesis from water and carbon dioxide [1]. The actual photosynthesis process is a complex multistage reaction and requires 469 kJ mol-1 of energy supplied by the sun. Isotope tracer experiments using 18O have shown that both the oxygen atoms in the O2 molecule originate from H2O, whereas oxygen atoms in the carbohydrates come from CO2 [1]. The total amount of water on the earth is split by photosynthesis and reconstituted by respiration and combustion once every 2 million years or so. The photosynthetically generated oxygen gas temporarily enters the atmosphere and is recycled about once every 2000 years [1]. The carbon dioxide is partly recycled in the atmosphere and oceans after an average residence time of 300 years and is partly fixed by precipitation of CaCO3 and other carbonate minerals [1]."

WHEN Vice-chairman Calvert Townley calls the next meeting of the Executive Board of the American Engineering Council of the Federated American Engineering Societies to order in Washington on Sept. 30, it will be the first meeting in that city for almost a year. It is probable that the Board will decide at this meeting whether future board meetings will be held regularly at the headquarters in Washington or whether the plan of meeting at various engineering centers throughout the country, as has been done during the past year, will be followed. The most important business coming before this .meeting will be the election of a president to succeed Herbert Hoover, who resigned after he became Secre¬tary of Commerce. Nominations to fill this vacancy were ordered 'at the last meeting of the Executive Board, to be reported at the September meeting. Special attention will be given the plans for the engineering assembly, extension of employment service, question of licensing and registration of engineers. The engineering assembly, committee has been appointed, with A. P. Davis as chairman, the other members being Philip N. Moore, L. P. Alford, John C. Hoyt and F. A. Vaughn. This committee will work out detailed plans for an assembly to be held in con¬junction with the annual meeting of the American Engineering Council in, January. Tentative plans provide for a three-day session; one day to be given to special meetings of the executive boards of member organizations and committees of the American Engineering Council; one day to the sessions of the American Engineering Council; and at least one day to discussion of some, special topic.

SAMREC (The South African Code for the Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves) Clause 7 notes that ‘Documentation detailing Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves from which a Public Report is prepared must be prepared by, or under the direction of, and signed by a Competent Person.’ Similar statements with respect to Competent Valuators (CVs) and Qualified Reserves Evaluators (QREs) are contained in the SAMVAL (South African Code for the Reporting of Mineral Asset Valuations) and SAMOG (South African Code for the Reporting of Oil & Gas Resources) codes respectively. What does it mean to be a Competent Person (CP) in the context of compiling/signing-off on SAMCODE (South African Mineral Code) compliant documents? What do the registration and experience requirements mean? Who is ultimately responsible for the report and what does such responsibility prescribe?
