Compressed- air blowers are frequently used both in large and small metal ines , not only as an aid to ventilation , but in some mines as a substitute for an dequate ventilation system . As a temporary fixture , blowers have their uses , but hey should never be used in lieu of a permanent ventilation system. A number Probably the most common error made in placing dependence on compressed- air lowers as an aid to underground ventilation is the tendency to over- rate their cooling efficiency . It is a very common but natural error to assume that compressed air which issues freely from a blower is of the same temperature as the compressed air which issues freely from the exhaust port of a rock-drilling machine . of readings were taken in different mines of the temperature of the rock- drill exhaust , of the compressed air flowing from the blowers , and of the surrounding air In both cases . In general , the temperature of the rock- drill exhaust was from 10 to 30 degrees below that of the surrounding air , in many instances being slightly below freezing , 32° F . The average temperature for a number of compressed-air lowers and for the mine air surrounding them is shown in Table I.

Recent mapping (1989-1992) by the Northern Territory Geological Survey in the Tennant Creek 1:250 000 map sheet area has resulted in substantial revision of the lithostratigraphy of the Tennant Creek Block (Donnellan, Hussey, and Morrison, in press). Briefly, the former Warramunga Group (Dunnet and Harding, 1967; Dodson and Gardener, 1978) is divided into the Warramunga Formation, and an overlying less deformed volcano-sedimentary succession, the Flynn Subgroup. The latter is conformably overlain by the Tomkinson Creek Subgroup of the Tomkinson Creek province in the north of the Tennant Creek Inlier. These two Subgroups constitute the Churchills Head Group which is essentially equivalent to the Hatches Creek Group of the Davenport province to the south of the Inlier.

O presente trabalho descreve o desenvolvimento de um modelo matemático de conservação de massa e energia tendo como base a medição intermediária da sublança (Modelo Dinâmico). O modelo utiliza como dados de entrada informações sobre massa e composição da carga metálica, valores adicionados de fundentes na corrida e as informações obtidas com a medição intermediária aos 88% do sopro de oxigênio calculado pelo Modelo Estático. O algoritmo foi desenvolvido em C# e está integrado na rede de Nível 2 da CSN. Os resultados de acerto simultâneo de temperatura e carbono final de sopro obtido pelo modelo dinâmico foram superiores ao Modelo Estatístico até então utilizado. Tal fato permitiu a redução do ressopro decorrentes de imprecisão do modelo e ganho em produtividade.

In this paper, the technology of producing fluxed pellets by using hydrated lime as binder instead of bentonite was carried out. The properties of the two types green balls (0.8 per cent bentonite and 2.0 per cent hydrated lime) were as follows: drop numbers of 4.8 - 5.0 times/0.5 m, compressive strength of 19.7 - 24.2 N/pellet and thermal shock temperature of 280° - 385°, respectively, under the same conditions of 1.5 per cent coke, 1.45 basicity and balling at 8.5 per cent moisture for 13 min in disc pelletiser. Comparing with bentonite as binder, the compressive strength of fired pellets with hydrated lime is elevated by 13.8 per cent and climbs up to 3113 N/pellet under the following conditions: preheating at 1050°C for ten minutes and fi ring at 1300°C for 15 min. In the mean time, the hydrated lime also improves the metallurgical performance of fired pellets. The reduction index was enhanced from 68.6 - 70.6 per cent, RDI+3.15+ increased from 90.1 to 98.8 per cent and reduction swelling index dropped from 22.4 - 7.4 per cent, respectively. The mineral compositions and microstructure of fi red pellets shows that the fired pellets containing 2.0 per cent possess more calcium ferrite and magnesium ferrite and compact microstructure, leading to the higher compressive strength.

Many of you radio listeners have probably never seen a mine . You may be glad of it, but you should not forget that there is a vast army of men in this country who not only have to see mines , but have to work in them day by day in order that you may be supplied with many of the things you need. Specifically , nearly a million men work in the mines of the United States , 700,000 in the coal mines , 110,000 in the metal mines , 100,000 in other mines and quarries , and 75,000 in the oil and gas fields . On a stormy night , the average citizen is apt to think of the perils of the seaman . Particularly in the old days before steamships , many a prayer went up " God help the poor sailor on a night like this . " At the same time , the sailormen often expressed fear for the poor landlubber , exposed as he was to the danger of falling chimneys , swaying signboards , and uprooted trees . So with the miner . Many of you may pity him , for working underground in complete darkness except for feeble artificial lighting , mining coal or ore , drilling hard rock , handling explosives , and perhaps breathing vitiated air . On the other hand , on stormy days , with rain , snow or hail falling , and with the temperature low , or on hot bright days , I have often heard miners joke about the poor fellows who had to stay " on top, " and could not get " down below" where there was no wind , where no snow fell, where the temperature was unchanging , and where a man could have his own working place , arranged to suit himself , with little interference from meddlers and with no automobiles to dodge . So do not feel too sorry for the miner . He is quite apt to be a strong , healthy , hearty person , making pretty good wages , and fairly well contented with his lot .

Copper removal from ferronickel by FeS has been exploring studied. It is found that the decopperizing agent FeS makes the copper removal in ferronickel effectively. The effects of FeS addition amount, carbon content in ferronickel and experimental temperature were investigated. The results showed that the removal rate of copper in ferronickel increased with the amount of FeS increasing. When the dosage of FeS is 20% (mass percentage)，the removal rate of copper can reach higher than 11%. The rate of copper removal rises with the amount of carbon content increasing in ferronickel. When the amount of carbon content is 1.86%, the removal ratio of copper is 41.3%. Higher experimental temperature promotes the copper removal reaction in certain extent. The flux is acidity and weak oxidative can also promote the reaction of copper removal.

Slag foaming phenomenon is of vital importance to the mass and energy transfer in metallurgical processes. A considerable extensively studies carried out via out-gas in the past cannot simulate well the foaming phenomenon formed in the blast furnace where high TiO2 iron ore is used. A gas reaction was designed in the water-glycerol system to simulate the inner-gas system. This study investigated the influences of solution viscosity, particle concentration and particle size on foaming caused by endogenetic gas. The results show that the foaming height decreases with the increase of solution viscosity, which means reduced foaming ability, more difficult foaming elimination process and prolonged time for natural defoaming. With increasing the solid particle content, the foam height presents a trend which increases firstly and then decreases. Under a certain solid particle content, foaming height decreases with the increase of solid particle size, indicating a weak foaming ability.

This paper is to discuss the removal of non-metallic inclusions from molten steel using a high frequency magnetic field. In experiments, a certain amount of aluminum was added to the molten steel in a crucible to generate aluminum inclusions. A layer of aluminum clusters were observed close to the wall of the crucible after the electromagnetic (EM) field was imposed. Three dimensional EM field and fluid flow simulation were performed and showed that over 91% inclusions transported to the skin depth (2.31 mm) of the molten steel. The calculation of inclusion removal agreed well with the experimental observation. The separation mechanisms of inclusions from the molten steel by the high frequency EM field were discussed.

A prática de desoxidação dos aços durante o vazamento, na qual se utiliza o alumínio como desoxidante é bastante difundida entre os aciaristas. Entretanto, gera-se como produto da desoxidação a alumina 2 Al + 3 O = Al2O3(s). Na maioria das vezes, a alumina compromete a qualidade interna do produto, assim como a lingotabilidade do aço líquido elaborado. Estas inclusões não metálicas contribuem para a obstrução da válvula submersa durante o lingotamento. Visou-se neste trabalho avaliar o potencial da substituição de parte do alumínio pelo coque na desoxidação parcial dos aços baixo carbono acalmados ao alumínio durante o vazamento do metal dos convertedores para a panela. Após o desenvolvimento da metodologia e do procedimento operacional, utilizou-se o coque como pré desoxidante em 868 corridas, no período de 09/2014 a 02/2015, sem a ocorrência de reações durante a adição de coque no vazamento e sem o comprometimento do acerto da composição química.

The corrosion resistance and corroded microstructure of MgO-C refractory in molten slag are investigated by immersion test in muffle furnace at 1600 °C . The microstructure and chemical compositions of the specimens after erosion experiment are characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX). The results confirm that the oxidation of graphite is the most important degradation mode of MgO-C refractory. The structure of the refractory material is damaged due to the decrease of graphite, as a result, the periclase substrate reacts with the molten slag directly. The corrosion process is controlled by the dissolution of the refractory materials into slag, low melting point oxides are therefore generated which lead to the damage of MgO-C refractory finally.

Manganese ore fines cannot be added to the submerged arc furnace directly as they will prevent even gas flow through the burden. Low gas permeability in the burden will lower the degree of pre-reduction of ore subsequently increase the carbon and energy consumption of the process. In order to utilize manganese ore fines in the furnace, they are typically agglomerated into sinter. In this work, the melting and reduction properties of Gabonese sinter and Gabonese ore have been investigated in pilot scale experiments. Two experiments were conducted, one with 100% sinter as manganese source and one with 50/50 sinter and ore. Lime was used to achieve a charge basicity of 0.72 in both experiments. The composition of slag samples from the excavation of the furnace was established using EPMA(WDS), and the composition of the tapped slag and metal was found using XRF. It was found that while the coke-bed size would determine the tapped slag composition, the melting behavior of the Mn source would determine the mixing with lime.

A análise dos carvões em mistura é de suma importância para redução dos custos e controle de qualidade de uma coqueria, esse trabalho trata da influência da cominuição comum de carvões de diferentes ranks, assim como suas implicações no processo de amostragem e consequentes desvios nas análises. O processo de produção da mistura de carvões na Ternium Brasil possuía um desvio não rastreado entre matéria volátil resultante da amostragem automática da mistura de carvões e a matéria volátil esperada pelo resultado da média ponderada dos carvões individuais no recebimento, para tal foram estudadas todas as etapas do processo de produção da mistura de carvões desde a variação dos carvões em pilha, escoamento em silos e na etapa anterior e posterior a britagem. Os dados foram comparados e foi feito um plano de ação para redução do desvio.

FOSTER: According to the Bureau of Mines, it is claimed coal passing through a 100 mesh screen would be considered fine enough. That is all I can learn from the different bulletins. MR. BEVAN: Will the coal dust be that fine; going back in the empty cars on the tipple in the mine? MR. FOSTER: Possibly a great deal of it would be. MR. BEVAN: Will the coal dust be that fine, going back, in the empty the coal dust going back in the cars on the tipple, and into the mine? MR. FOSTER: In some places, they are wetting the cars at the tipple, -in the Rock Springs District, we have as the trip goes out, they have a big pipe, and they souse the car, and wet the load, and in some places, near the timbers; that helps to a certain extent. That does not absolutely eliminate it all, but it helps considerable. MR. WM. LITTLEJOHN (Utah Fuel Company) : I think we have all listened very attentively to the paper that Mr. Foster has just read. He has brought up a subject rather close to my heart, for a long time. He mentions particularly, the Scofield disaster, which happened the first of May, 1900; two hundred men lost their lives in the explosion; and I think it is generally conceded that is about the first time it had ever been brought to the attention of coal miners or operators that such a thing was possible, namely, a purely coal dust explosion. The term "Scofield disaster" is rather a mistake, in a way; while the mine that exploded at the time is in the Scofield District all right, it is now known, and probably was known at that time, as the Winter Quarters Mine, one of the mines which belongs to the Utah Fuel Company at the present time, and did at that time. As the 2013 president of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration, Inc., I am pleased to present the 2013 issue of the Transactions of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration, Vol. 334. The timely publication of professional papers that promote the advancement of scientific and technical knowledge is critical for enabling technology transfer. SME plays a key role in this process through its publications. Communication within the mining community is the key to a successful profession and society. This technology exchange continues a tradition that dates back to the 1871 meeting of 22 mining engineers in Wilkes-Barre, PA, that resulted in the founding of AIME; those individuals envisioned that these transaction volumes “would form a most valuable and greatly needed addition to our professional literature.” This volume fulfills that pledge. The 2013 Transactions contains 73 papers covering most every aspect of the mining life cycle and encompassing the diverse sectors of our industry including coal, industrial minerals, metals, health and safety and computational methods. It includes all 18 papers published in 2013 in the Technical Papers Section of Mining Engineering magazine (Vol. 65) and all 33 papers published in 2013 in Minerals & Metallurgical Processing (Vol. 30). Additionally, this volume contains 22 papers that are being published for the first time in this issue. The papers presented in this volume were written by some of the most distinguished professionals in the industry worldwide. Some of the many research highlights from 2013 include discussions of perennial issues, such as how to adequately prepare the next generation of mining engineering students for the workforce (Frimpong et al., pp. 44-52) and how to predict and prevent coal mine bursts and bumps (Pariseau, pp. 60-68), the highly anticipated February Rare Earths issue of Minerals & Metallurgical Processing, and papers analyzing electrical injuries in the U.S. Mining industry (Homce and Cawley, p. 367-375) the latest in assessing the safety and efficiency of operations. All 73 technical papers were peer-reviewed. The process of review and publication requires much hard work by authors, reviewers and our publications staff. As the 2013 president of SME and on behalf of all our members, I would like to extend our gratitude to all whose volunteer efforts contributed to the publication of this volume.

Coal-bearing Tertiary sediments of the Ravenscrag Formation in southern Saskatchewan host numerous deposits of clinker resulting from in situ coal combustion. Clinker deposits form when sediments of relatively low temperature firing properties overlie coal seams which are undergoing prolonged spontaneous combustion. The resulting fired material is useful for decorative landscaping aggregate, rock gardens, driveways, mud control and others. Predicting the occurrence of clinker deposits requires a knowledge of the spatial distribution of coal seams and the nature ofoverlying sediments. Knowledge ofpaleotopography at the time of coal combustion can assist in locating more highly-fused material which can yield greater block sizes. Coal data bases can be used as a predictive tool by outlining areas where coal is or was at or near surface and therefore may have been susceptible to spontaneous combustion.

The extraction of vanadium from mechanically activated converter slag was studied in dilute sulfuric acid solution. The effects of roasting and leaching parameters were investigated. The results show that Ca/V mole ratio, roasting temperature, leaching temperature, liquid-solid ratio, and particle size all have significant effects on vanadium leaching efficiency from calcification-roasted converter slag.

Ni2SiO4 was prepared by chemical precipitation process as a novel anode material for lithium-ion batteries. The structure and morphology of further annealed Ni2SiO4 samples were characterized by XRD and SEM analysis. The electrochemical performance including cyclic voltammetric curves (CV), electrochemical impedance spectra (EIS), charge/discharge curves and cycling performances were also determined. The results demonstrated that the crystal structure of the samples is orthorhombic having space group Pmn21. The morphological structure of materials exhibited cubic particles with sizes in the range of 50–80 nm. The first cycle charge capacity of the pure Ni2SiO4 particles reached to 753 mAh g−1 with the coulombic efficiency of 63.8%. The charge capacity remained 305 mAh g−1 at a current density of 100 mA g−1 even after 50 cycles, which is nearly 208% higher than those of the Ni2SiO4 with SiO2 impurity. Ni2SiO4 can be a promising alternative anode material.

Nearly the entire worldwide production of europium is recovered, as a minor constituent, from mining bastnäsite, monazite ore, or ion absorbing clays. However, this research indicates a process to recycle europium from waste lamp phosphors as a strategy meet the demand for europium. In this process, waste fluorescent lamp powder is retorted, sieved, leached, and precipitated to produce a mixed europium/yttrium rare earth oxide (REO). Europium is separated from yttrium by selectively reducing Eu(III) to Eu(II) using zinc powder and precipitating europium (II) sulfate from solution using sulfuric acid. Screening experiments were conducted observe the effect of pulp density, precipitation time, entrance pH, and stoichiometric ratio sulfate upon the grade and recovery of europium (II) sulfate. The best conditions to maximize grade and recovery of europium (II) sulfate were a 1 h precipitation time, 10 the stoichiometric ratio of sulfate, 100 g/L mixed REO, and the entrance pH equal to 3. The maximum grade of europium sulfate was 95.93%, and the maximum recovery was 73.32%.
