The corrosion behaviors of chrome corundum/magnesia in laterite nickel slag were investigated by static crucible method. The results show that the molten slag can penetrate into chrome corundum or magnesia which are used as lining materials in smelter furnace, and the corrosion can occur at the slag-refractory interface and the inner area of the refractories as well. Both the penetrated amount of slag and the penetration depth of Fe, Si increase with increasing FeO content (10–25 wt%) in slag. Such penetration in magnesia is stronger than that in chrome corundum under the same corrosion conditions, as more pores in magnesia may provide channels for slag penetration and corrosion product transportation. A damage of the refractory linings and short service life of smelter furnace may happen during metallurgical processing slag with high FeO content.

As a result of the consumption and the rising cost of raw materials for ironmaking, steel producers have increased their utilization of low-cost, low-grade raw materials such as high alumina iron ore. The effect of Al2O3 and the Al2O3/SiO2 ratio on the viscosity, surface tension and sulfide capacity of the CaO–SiO2–Al2O3–MgO–TiO2 blast furnace slag system were studied in the present work. At a fixed CaO/SiO2 ratio of 1.20, 9 mass pct MgO, and 1 mass pct TiO2, the viscosity increases with an increase in Al2O3 content at a range of 16–24 mass pct, and decreases when the Al2O3 is higher than 24 mass pct. Increasing Al2O3/SiO2 from 0.47 to 0.92 causes a slight decrease in viscosity of the slags and has an opposite effect when Al 2O3/SiO2 is more than 0.92. The surface tension increases with increasing Al2O3 content at a fixed Al2O3 content and Al2O3/SiO2 at a fixed CaO content. The desulfurizing capacity decreases with increasing of Al2O3 content, while increases with increasing Al2O3/SiO2 at a fixed CaO content.

Smelting is an important process in copper production to produce matte and slag.The slag,containing about 1–12% Cu can be further processed to recover the copper contaminated, but recycle of the slag concentrate reduces overall productivity and efficiency of the operation. The best solution is to minimize the copper loss to the slag. The entrained matte droplets in copper smelting slag may originate from a few sources. The present study aims to investigate possible copper matte loss mechanisms by visualization of room temperature experiments and high-temperature examination. It is believed that the gas bubbles from the matte phase disperse the matte droplets into the slag causing entrained matte in slag. Analyses of quenched slags from industrial operation and laboratory experiments confirmed that matte droplets in the slag are extensively associated with the gas bubbles. Water model is used to simulate the procedure and the bubble behaviors at the liquid-liquid interface are observed experimentally with a high-speed camera.

The evolution of chemical composition, size, proportion, and morphology of the Al-Ti-Mg-O inclusions during the steelmaking process of Interstitial Free (IF) steel from the RH to the Continuous Casting (CC) slab were investigated by means of Auto-SEM. Results showed that many of Al2O3 and MgO-Al2O3 type inclusions are modified by TiOx, while most of their shapes are irregular due to the high melting temperature. The composition evolutions and melting characteristics of Al-Ti-Mg-O inclusions under different contents of [Al], [Ti] and [Mg] were estimated by using thermodynamic software Factsage 7.0. Results showed that estimated results are in good agreement with the analysis results of industrial samples. Both the Ti alloying and spontaneous enrichment would make a high Ti concentration environment that was in favor of the TiOx existence. Moreover, more TiOx component can modify MgO-Al2O3 spine inclusion into inclusions with a lower melting temperature.

The evolution of microstructure and mineral phases in iron ore sinters have been investigated by scanning electron microscope and QEMSCAN (Quantitative Evaluation of Minerals by Scanning Electron Microscopy). It was found that MgO, basicity and Al2O3 content play an important role in the formation of mineral phases and microstructure in sinter. The low Al2O3 (<2.0 wt%), medium MgO (2.0–2.5 wt%) and high basicity (>3.0) sinter showed higher low temperature degradation index (LTD) due to the presence of silico ferrites of calcium and aluminium (SFCA), and magnetite phase, and lower pore phase as compared to low basicity iron ore sinter.

Graphite, which has a unique stack structure that enables a small friction coefficient, is used as one kind of the best hearth rolls to support and convey silicon steel strip in continuous annealing furnace. However, the buildup formation in/on the surface of carbon sleeve has always been a worldwide difficulty in the silicon steel industry. Based on the analysis of the microstructure, topography and composition of the buildups, combined with simulation experiments, the mechanism of forming buildups is discussed. The results show that buildups experience the process from nucleating to growing-up, and buildups are formed by nano liquid phase sintering (NLPS). Meanwhile, some countermeasures to reduce or prevent the formation of the buildups are proposed.

"The Oxford Hydroelectric Station was a unique project that incorporated a variety of dam strengthening methods to stabilize the facility in order to meet the standards required by Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). The dam stability and Probable Maximum Flood (PMF) remediation work consisted of (1) construction of a new emergency spillway; (2) installation of 75 high capacity rock anchors; (3) construction of an anchored concrete powerhouse buttress; (4) construction of cast-in-place and sheetpile flood walls; and (5) design and construction of a permanent soil nail wall. INTRODUCTIONThe Oxford Hydroelectric Station is one of 11 hydroelectric facilities owned and operated by Duke Power along the Catawba/Wateree River. The Catawba River originates in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains just west of Morganton, North Carolina. The river flows east out of the mountains and, at a point just below the Oxford Dam, the Catawba River turns and heads southeast. The Catawba River continues to flow southeast past Charlotte and into South Carolina where it eventually becomes the Wateree River. The Wateree River eventually flows in to the Atlantic Ocean.Located a few miles east of Hickory, North Carolina, the Oxford Dam and Hydroelectric facility is in the upper reach of the Catawba River. Oxford Dam creates the third impoundment along the river known as Lake Hickory. Lake Hickory is well known locally for providing many outdoor activities such as boating, jet skiing, canoeing and fishing. The dam and powerhouse were put into operation in the spring of 1928.Key features of the dam include a short embankment section on the south end of the structure, a 391-foot (119m) long south bulkhead and powerhouse, 540-foot (165m) long gated spillway section and a 235-foot (71.6m) long north bulkhead. The maximum height of the dam is approximately 100-feet (30m) from the crest to the dam/rock interface. (See Figure 1).The work associated with this project is the result of licensing requirements of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) which mandates that all hydroelectric facilities have the capacity to safely discharge runoff created by a critical rainfall event defined as the probable maximum flood (PMF). Duke Power, a division of Duke Energy (DUKE) submitted an initial PMF report in 1992 which indicated that at the Oxford Dam would be overtopped by approximately 10-feet of water during the modeled PMF event. Given the duration and depth of the overtopping, significant damage to the facility and a possible breach could result. Therefore, modifications to the existing facility were necessary to satisfy the report of the PMF model."

As someone who has enjoyed photography as a hobby for many years, aerial photography to me has always been an exciting way to give a different perspective to my images. Our industry is always in search of new technology for bet­ter and more cost effective methods to improve our trade and aerial photography is a great tool to improve project planning or document its progress. It has typically involved conventional aircraft both fixed wing and helicopters but neither method is always available or cost effective. The lat­est innovation since digital imaging is the development of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) or drones. But there is a lot of uncertainty with this amazing new technology’s fu­ture in the U.S. as the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is under review and development of UAV regulations for commercial use which are slated to be completed in 2015.

As Mr. Fackenthal says, it is very hard to see why silicon should liquate from an iron containing so little silicon, and it seems more probable that some silicide of some volatile element has liquated, and has dissociated on reaching the air, and that the volatile element has volatilized, leaving the silicon to oxidize to silica. The volatile elements present which might thus liquate in combination with the silicon are sulphur, zinc, and lead. It is hard to see why sulphide of silicon should have liquated from an iron containing so little of either sulphur or silicon. At first, one naturally thinks that either the zinc or the lead present in this furnace might have liquated as silicide. In populated areas these can have a negative impact on the environment, disturb inhabitants and, under unfavorable conditions, cause damage to buildings and installations. This condition is aggravated by the growing public awareness of environmental issues and the increasing use of vibration-sensitive electronic equipment and machinery in industry. In many countries, environmental regulations are enforced more stringently and limit or even prohibit the use of impact or vibratory hammers. This development has restricted the use of cost-effective foundation methods, such as driven and vibrated piles and sheet piles.Vibration problems are gaining importance in many European countries and extensive research has been performed during the past decade, especially with respect to traffic vibrations (Massarsch, 2004). Significant progress has been made owing to the availability of high-quality field measurements and an improved theoretical understanding of how vibrations are generated and transmitted through soil layers. These findings can also be applied to vibration problems associated with construction activities. However, this information is not yet appreciated by the geotechnical profession and even less by the construction industry.This paper discusses the effects of ground vibrations on the surrounding soil and on buildings, with particular emphasis on the different mechanisms of damage that may occur. Guidance is given on the elements which should be taken into account in an assessment of risks associated with piling projects. A simplified method is proposed for assessing the risk of settlements or strength loss in soil deposits. Limiting vibration levels are presented, based on the Swedish standard, which can be used to assess the risk of damage to buildings. Aconcept to predict ground vibrations caused by pile driving and the mechanisms which control the propagation of ground vibrations, will be presented in the second part of this paper."

This report describes laboratory as well as pilot heap leaching investigations of low-grade sandstone ores from Wyoming, New Mexico, and Colorado. Sodium carbonate-bicarbonate solutions containing sodium hypochlorite extracted up to 86, 54, and 16 percent U308 from Wyoming, New Mexico, and Colorado ores, respectively. Ammonium carbonate-bicarbonate solutions containing sodium hypochlorite were less effective at leaching these ores. Acid leach in replicate pilot plant testing resulted in U308 extractions of 96, 88, and 81 percent from the Wyoming, New Mexico, and Colorado ores. The development of cost-effective processes for extracting uranium from low-grade ore is essential to the assurance of a continuing domestic supply of uranium.

"Spent auto-catalyst is a potential secondary resource because of the higher concentration of valuable platinum group metals (PGMs) as compared to the primary ores. Despite the well-developed commercially tenable technologies, further researches are being carried out to extract the PGMs with high efficiency. It is however, critical in this context to reuse not only the PGMs but also other metals contained in the spent auto-catalyst particularly that of the cordierite substrate such as aluminum, magnesium and cerium oxide (CeO2). This is important in view of the fact that no recycling process has ever stressed upon the recovery of cordierite substrate and CeO2 since the main target metals are mostly the PGMs. In this study, a new hydrometallurgical approach has been proposed in order to recover the PGMs as well as cerium oxide and materials from the cordierite substrate by using sodium hydroxide roasting followed by sulfuric acid dissolution. Under the optimal conditions for roasting at above 600°C, and weight ratio of sample to NaOH of 1:1 for 60 min, the cordierite was converted to the soluble phases. Dissolution of the roasting products using H2SO4 solution (1M) at 25°C for 60 min enriched the PGMs and Cerium oxide contents in the residue. Subsequently, PGMs in solution after dissolution can be cemented using Al and Cerium oxide in residue can be recovered by hot digestion using concentrated H2SO4.. INTRODUCTION Auto-catalyst can significantly control the gaseous emission of automobiles, and has been considered as a potential secondary source of Platinum group metals (PGMs) after being decommissioned from the vehicles. The PGMs demand is continuously increasing to comply with the growing vehicle population and the tightening of emission standards all over the world; meanwhile the natural resources of these metals is facing the threat of depletion. Therefore, it is crucial to progressively substitute with an alternate resource to supply PGMs other than that of the primary ores. Nowadays, vehicular transportations worldwide are totally installed with the auto-catalysts. However, they should be replaced after reaching their service life. If there is no recycling of such resources, huge amount of valuable metals will be wasted. The quantity of PGMs that can be recovered from the spent auto-catalyst depends on the size of car, which averages to 1-2 grams for small cars and 12-15 grams for the big truck; this is significantly higher than that of the primary ores containing 2-10 grams PGMs per ton. Consequently, the recovery of PGMs from spent auto-catalyst becomes extremely favorable as compared to the primary resources due to higher concentration of PGMs, with much lower and simpler processing steps, and lesser pollution."

"As underground mining continues to operate at deeper depths and in more complex multiple seam mining geometries there has been an increased demand for higher design standards in ground control safety and stability within the mining industry. For the past 20 years, NIOSH has developed and validated a number of software tools to aid in the development of safer mining environments with respect to improved roof support performance, pillar stability in longwall and room and pillar mines, formation characterization, the prediction of roof conditions, etc. These tools are available, free of charge, to the mining industry as stand-alone software packages. As cloud computing gains momentum, there is a definite need to develop internet based applications for mine design that would be easily accessible to any user at any time, including underground where permitted. This paper introduces a new web-based product which will allow for faster and easier access to existing ground control designs, on-the-fly calculations in the field as needed, and instant online collaboration between operations personnel and planning engineers. It is expected that the industry will rapidly embrace this product and, as it is common with all new innovative technologies, it will be a new paradigm for mining engineering computer applications. INTRODUCTION Since its release to the public in the late 1980's, the World Wide Web has drastically changed from a collection of static HTML web pages to a dynamic vehicle driving e-commerce, collaborative working relationships, and the mass distribution of information and media (Offutt, 2002). Recent developments in Internet capabilities, such as Cloud Computing and Software as a Service, have begun a migration away from desktop-based software in adoption of the web application (Hayes, 2008). Web applications, or web apps, are designed on the client-server architecture paradigm in which the client, or user, can interact with an application through web browsers without disrupting or installing software on potentially thousands of client computers (Nations, 2015). Currently, web-based software applications are being utilized in all business sectors and markets from commerce, finance, media, and even engineering. In fact, the Alabama Department of Transportation has developed a web-based geotechnical geographical information system (GeoGIS) for the management of and access to geotechnical and subsurface data for transportation projects across the state (Graettinger, et al., 2001). Similarly, Dyno Noble has developed a service application for explosive engineers. The Explosives Engineers' Guide application equips users with a full range of product information as well as on-demand blasting calculations for powder factor, airblast prediction, ground vibration, etc. Through the incorporation of a web server, one is able to utilize the functionality of the desktop-based software through a web browser located on any personal computer, tablet, or Smartphone (Vaughan-Nichols, 2002)."

The mining industry is under immense pressure to not only meet increasing demand for minerals, but to do so in an environmentally safe and sustainable manner. Growth in electric vehicles, battery storage, renewable energy infrastructure and data centers to power artificial intelligence (AI) has led to an unprecedented demand for minerals such as copper, lithium, rare earth elements and others. The need for these minerals for national defense has only increased the pressure on the mining industry. Increased geopolitical tensions between the United States, China and Russia has added a sense of urgency as supply chains have become a focal point for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and Defense (DOD) and other government agencies. The International Energy Agency (IEA) predicts that copper demand is expected to grow by 50 percent by 2040 while demand for lithium could increase eight-fold by 2040 and demand for nickel and cobalt could double. The challenges to meet the increased demand include technological, workforce, exploration and environmental issues. From Feb. 22-26, the global mining industry will converge on Salt Lake City, UT for the MINEXCHANGE 2026 SME Annual Conference & Expo where these challenges and others will be addressed by some of the leading minds in the industry. Included in this year’s conference is the Resilient Energy in Mining Symposium, a symposium with input from across SME that looks to address some of the most significant challenges the industry is facing. “Adopting environmental, social and governance (ESG) best practices has become a necessity for the mining industry, not an option. The Resilient Energy in Mining Symposium is crucial for MINEXCHANGE 2026 because it addresses the complex challenges of transforming traditional mining operations to support a sustainable and secure energy future,” Lisa Gonzales, principal engineering at Arcadias and MINEXCHANGE 2026 SME Annual Conference Chair and chair of the Resilient Energy in Mining Symposium said. “Mining is inherently energy-intensive, yet it is also foundational to the global energy transition, supplying the critical minerals needed for renewable technologies. By bringing together industry leaders, the symposium fosters collaboration and actionable change, showcasing advancements and real-world solutions that demonstrate the tangible benefits of resilient energy strategies. First, permit me to say with what very great pleasure we find ourselves assembled in this most ancient and honourable city of Quebec. It is a city which we deeply respect as the fountain-head of the culture of French-speaking fellow citizens, and the seat of government of a province which is steadily recording new achievements in Canadian mining. Such achievements prove what can be accomplished when enlightened and progressive government policy, technical and scientific competence, and private initiative pull forward together in harmonious rhythm. It is a most happy and auspicious event also that the guiding control of the affairs of the Institute and of the fine traditions of provincial administration have for the past year been united in the person of our honoured President, Dr. A. O. Dufresne. This year, again, we have bad prepared for us by our hosts a splendid programme of technical sessions and social entertainment. Each year we pay an unspoken compliment to the Institute, expecting as a matter of course nothing but the highest standards in both these spheres. In its annua1, semi-annual, and regional meetings, in the constant activity of its local Branches, the Institute continues with marked success to perform its great dual service, social and educational. We are all its beneficiaries to the extent to which we choose to profit by participation in its affairs. But, one imagines, to none are the advantages of Institute membership more valuable than to young men embarking on their professional careers.

A major investigative&apos; program was conducted on the development of an acceptable substitute organic binder for bentonite for the pelletizing of the Iron Ore Company of Canada&apos;s Carol concentrate. The first phase of the program covered an evaluation of several organic binders in laboratory tire balling in order to identify the most promising potential organic binders. Based on the green ball quality obtained, Peridur C-10, Alchem 8C26 and peat moss were selected for full scale pot-grate testwork. The selected binders were tested with various pelletizing mixes (acid, dolomite, limestone and fully fluxed). The pot-grate test results showed that an acceptable pellet quality can be produced with the use of Peridur C-10.

At that time less than two dozen codes were incorporated into the engineering design and they were somewhat static and well known by the engineering designers and managers. Existing classifications of mining and construction equipment have had major deficiencies. They often lack organization, balance, and have remained obscure. Particularly when proceeding to great.er resolution these deficiencies have proven crippling. By adopting "Classes", "Groups" f "Types" and "Kinds" at successive degrees of refinement, a "Taxonomy" is developed based on clear visual differentiation or on a "Morphology??. This symbiotic application, adopted from the Biological Sciences, yields clear, simple and unambiguous results. Supporting this effort are guidelines for easily and credibly sketching equipment which are also distinctive. Numerous illustrative examples are provided. Communications are improved and the engineer obtains a confident feel for the equipment at hand.
