Copper remains one of the most sought-after metals in the industry. Tennantite (Cu12As4S13) and tetrahedrite (Cu12Sb4S13) that occur in pyrite copper, copper-zinc and polymetallic ores are an additional reserve for increasing technological parameters of flotation. Pyrite mass (85% and more) has similar flotation properties to other sulfide minerals, and imperfection of reagent regime is a common problem that occurs during quality copper concentrate processing. Due to tennantite's and chalcopyrite's differences in flotation properties with butyl xanthate at pH > 10, tennantite often reports to the flotation tails. Hight alkalinity of the medium increases the oxidation level of sulfide minerals, thus increasing the concentration of S2O3 2-, SO3 2- SO4 2-. At processing facilities in the Russian Federation, the concentration of thiosulfate ions in pulp is in the range of 0.5 to 1.5 g/l and higher, which leads to a decrease in flotation activity of the tennantite. The effect of butyl xanthate (as standard), thionocarbamate, dithiophosphate and M-TF (a mixture of dithiophosphate and thionocarbamate) on monomineral (tennantite and pyrite) flotation in the presence of sodium thiosulfate was studied. The variable parameters of the "thiosulfate-collector" flotation complex were thiosulfate concentration (100-900); pH (8-12,5). The scientific methods included contact angle for hydration assessment; TEM for surface studies; UV spectroscopy and iodometric titration for solubility control. Comprehensive studies have established a connection between the concentration of thiosulfate ions and tennantite flotation selectivity. Flotation activity of tennantite is higher at pH 8 with a thiosulfate concentration under 300 mg/l. Pyrite remains active with butyl xanthate under the same conditions. TEM images of the surface films of the collectors on pyrite were acquired at pH 8. The MTF provides the biggest difference in adsorption, wettability and flotation activity between tennantite and pyrite at pH 8 and thiosulfate concentration under 300 mg/l, in comparison with butyl xanthate. The results of the research will be applied to improve selective reagent regimes of tennantite minerals flotation. "The traditional investment casting foundries use batch melting and chunky running systems to produce casting components. This method leaves the energy saving issue as subsidiary one. In our research project, one of the partners, the AEROMET international PLC provides the thin wall aluminium component ""filter housing"" for test. The AERO MET uses traditional casting route to produce the filter housing, which only gives 5% --10% yield. In this paper, numerical simulation method is used to analyse filling and solidification of the casting running system. The CRIMSON running system of the filter housing is designed by using casting simulation software, MAGMAS and Flow3D. By working with AEROMET, various configurations of the casting running systems were tested and analysed. Using them ultiple life cycle approach, the energy content of new process is compared with traditional one. It indicates that the CRIMSON process only uses 36% of energy consumed by the traditional route.IntroductionThe investrnent casting is a metal for ming process using expendable patterns, which is a standard casting technique and is widely used to produce quality parts. Its accuracy, versatility and integrity tie itself to important and precious engineering components in Aerospace industry. However, traditional investrnent casting process usually uses chunky runner system and gravity filling method. It not only reduces the casting yield of the product but also causes the pouring defect during the casting. As author's previous research showed that gravity filling method pouring basin and down sprue are two main resources of entraimnent defects generation. No matter how good the running system is, entraimnent defects such as double oxide films (DOF) and bubbles will I get into the casting to cause problem."

Single wavelength fluorescence sensing has been used in the preconcentration of ores for many years in situations where it is typically specific to the mineral of interest. Examples of fluorescence sensing include the sorting of diamonds in diamond mines and the sorting of scheelite in tungsten ores. However, the number of minerals that show useful single wavelength fluorescence properties in the visible spectrum is relatively small, so the application of fluorescence sensing is currently limited to niche application in the minerals industry. Recent developments at the University of Adelaide have focussed upon extending fluorescence signal measurements into the infrared spectrum, as well as investigating multi-wavelength fluorescence known as up-conversion fluorescence. These techniques may not only significantly increase the number of minerals that exhibit fluorescence properties suitable for both identification and sensor-based sorting, but also provide mineral-specific signatures of higher quality than previously attainable. This paper details the research work carried out by the University of Adelaide and funded by CRC ORE to develop a mineral-specific fluorescence sensor. The sensor targets two fluorine bearing minerals, fluorite and fluorapatite, that are common in many base metal ores such as porphyry copper ores and silver/lead/zinc ores. Fluorine is a known penalty element in mineral products derived from these ores, so mining companies need to monitor and control the amount of fluorine in their final product to keep it below commercially agreed specifications. Currently there is no real time sensor capable of monitoring fluorine in the ore feed so monitoring and control is carried out using time-consuming standard sampling and off-line laboratory measurements. The development and application of a real time fluorine sensor will enable the mining companies to monitor and control fluorine levels in the plant, greatly reducing the time and cost associated with producing their mineral concentrates within the prescribed specifications.

"The concentrator at Brenda Mines Ltd. treats a copper - molybdenum porphyry ore with current head grades of 0.185% Cu and 0.036% Mo. The consistently low head grades provided the driving force to explore methods of improving plant productivity. Computer based process control was recognized as one means of addressing this objective. Over the period from 1974 to 1982 a control system evolved which now extends to every area of the mill. Control strategies are built on elements of classical, modern and rudimentary expert control. In addition, the control system has often served as a catalyst for other technological developments. The economic returns associated with the system are very significant and it has played an important role in the mine's survival in times of poor metal markets. This paper presents an overview of the computer control system at Brenda.PreambleOne can scarcely avoid picking up a trade magazine or newspaper today without seeing some reference to technology and its potential impact on North American business. _A recurring theme is the need to apply technology to raise our standard of plant automation in the manufacturing and process industries. The general thesis of these articles has been concisely captured in the mutually exclusive set:AUTOMATE or EMIGRATE or EVAPORATEProcess control is one form of automation that has been successfully exploited by various sectors of these industries. In minerals and metal processing the wide scale adoption of process control technology has, until recently, been largely limited to a few companies - most of whom have a history in the area dating back to the early 1970’s. However, there is definitely an increased and much broader interest in process control as a technology which can improve performance, productivity and profit.The economic hardships that were visited on the mining industry in the early 1980's are not easily forgotten. It is the authors' conviction that the mining industry must move to implement proven technology, in particular process control, in order to be well postured for the next (inevitable) down cycle.In pursuing the technical and trade literature, one can discover a number of example of the successful utilization of process control systems in mining and related applications. In the text which follows, the authors describe the process control efforts undertaken in the Brenda Mines Ltd. concentrator."

Of the three projects, particularly the extensive Nimitz II (downtown) project, a single system, which was part of the operation, was used to control the spoil. Spoil control was continuous with the work since a vacuum truck and crew was used to suck up the spoils as they came out of the borehole. So, the whole job was kept clean both during operations and at the end of the shifts. On the Sand Island project, a double system was used. Larger spoil quantities were contained within the shaft limits during the work and the cleanup or disposal of the spoils was performed during excavation.

FMC's Paradise Peak Mine was discovered in July 1983. The deposit at discovery contained 11,340 ,000 tonnes (12,500,000 tons) of ore grading 3.71 glt (0.108 oz/ton) Au and 120 glt (3.5 oz/ton) Ag. A feasibility study was completed by Davy McKee in May 1984, with detailed engineering starting in June 1984. Construction of the facility started on January 2, 1985 with plant start-up taking place on April 14, 1986, two and one half months ahead of schedule and more than 10% under budget. This paper describes the status of the operation approximately 1-1/2 years after start-up including revisions and additions to equipment and process.

Unexpected expenses, natural events and workforce changes have a big impact on the costs of production. To help focus production and maintenance budgets, mining executives are increasingly turning to production metrics to make key decisions. Role of mine and mill data Companies employ a variety of information systems to allow employees to accomplish their operational tasks, and each worker is focused on the metrics, or key performance indicators (KPI), for his or her individual function. For example, machine operators monitor throughput and cycle time to keep the machines running continuously and to meet daily production quotas. Meanwhile, the maintenance teams monitor machine performance, overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) and meantime between failure to predict and help prevent downtime.

Due to the relatively remote location of the St. Anthony Mine, the high cost of transportation and milling, plus the low grade nature of the deposit, the United Nuclear Corporation began investigating methods of mechanical upgrading approximately eighteen moths ago. This investigation culminated in the installation of Model 17 and Model 18 ore sorting machines. The machines are marketed in the United States and Canada by Ore Sorters of Canada (Ltd.). The installation of this advanced technology will enable United Nuclear Corporation to fully realize the residual potential of St. Anthony.

REVIEWING the events of the year in mineral industry education, a certain amount of either amusement or irritation, depending upon one's viewpoint, can be derived front the section dealing with mining engineering in Walter B. Pitkin's "New Careers for Youth" which appeared during the summer. On p. 102 Prof. Pitkin says "The mining engineer is disappearing .. . because . . . the profits of mining decline rapidly with the age of the mine." In his "Are Too Many Students Taking Mining Courses?" published in the May issue of this journal, W. B. Plank presents statistics showing that there was some decline in student enrollment in mining and metallurgical courses in 1932-3 and 1933-4, compared with 1930-31, but that the decline was proportionate to that in all lines of engineering study combined. Informal reports from Institute officials that have visited tinning schools during the fall indicate that nearly all schools showed an increase in enrollment for the current school year. Pre else statistics will be made available by Prof. Plank at the Annual Meeting. His study last year provided, for the first time, accurate and complete information on the enrollment in mining schools, as well as the number of various courses and the degree granted, and it will be interesting to have comparable figures for this year. Prof. Pitkin's views on the future opportunities for mining engineers were discussed at some length - on pages 439-4.40 of the November issue of MINING AND METALLURGY.

Rice, secretary of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, prepared a brief history of the joint activities of engineering societies in the United States, from which we have taken the following facts. National Societies Our first joint activities were in collection with the celebration of the eightieth birthday of "Uncle John" Fritz in 1902, and it is of interest to note that two of the members of the original celebration committee, Messrk. . Ambrose Swasey and Jesse Merrick Smith, will be members of the official deputation to England in June. Mr. Rice, also,' was .a member, of the original committee.

IT was but a few years ago that the mining engineer, and his confreres, the civil, mechanical and electrical engineer, were stigmatized by politicians of the parish? pump variety as advance agents of unprincipled exploiters of backward countries. Today he is recognized as a most important missionary of civilization in opening up new territory to contribute its mineral wealth and incidentally its other resources for the needs of mankind. An engineer, it is now conceded, is not only a benefactor of the world at large, but is a primary factor in the betterment of conditions of the inhabitants of those countries developed by his skill and indomitable courage-for courage is requisite in pioneering and his indefatigable industry. The engineer will, I believe, become a real "Ambassador of Good Will," when the slow-consenting academic mind realizes as it must that beneficent deeds are more enduring and more convincing than mere gestures of professed amity.

THE time of the Section delegates was economized this year by providing the section reports in mimeo- graphed form, together with the reports of the officers and committees of the Institute, for their consideration on arrival. The meeting was called for Thursday forenoon and despite a certain amount of oratory managed to get through before all the luncheon was gone. In all, nine section delegates and one from the Iron and Steel Division attended and took part. One delegate, who had come many miles, got lost in the complication of the program and failed to attend. Six appointed dele- gates failed to attend and two sections neglected to make appointments.

An editorial in the April 1990 edition of Mining Magazine is worth a wider audience in South Africa, particularly as the SAIMM enters its own centenary decade and the process of change in the minerals industry world-wide makes increasing demands on the professionalism of its leaders. The editorial considers the changing status of engineers, who up to the 1880s had been held in high regard by society. Alumina and bauxite Economists forecast a slower economic growth rate in 1990, but expect continued increase in demand for aluminum at a 3 per cent annual rate during the decade. Structural and numerical analysis Struceng & Femcad (structural analysis and finiteelement method) is a conference and exhibition that is to be held in Grenoble (France) on 17th and 18th October, 1990. Scope 3 emissions are a set of often overlooked indirect greenhouse gas emissions within a company’s value chain and represent the majority of emissions for many sectors. These emissions arise from activities conducted by entities beyond the reporting organisation’s ownership or direct control and are often challenging to calculate. Scope 3 emissions typically encompass purchasing goods and services, transportation and distribution, managing operational waste, downstream processing and utilising sold products. Within the mining sector, scope 3 emissions often constitute a significant portion of the overall carbon footprint. Therefore, these emissions are a significant aspect of the future of sustainable mining. As the journey towards a world committed to achieving Net Zero Emissions has started, the time to spark a transformative conversation in the mining industry has arrived. Consequently, a better knowledge of scope 3 footprints allows organisations to assess their emission mitigation projects against the total carbon impact of their operations and products.

PUBLIC hearings began before the Committee for Reciprocity Information on May 24, 1950, for the purpose of unearthing data and opinion that will be helpful in the forthcoming reciprocal tariff and other trade-barrier negotiations at Torquay, England, on September 28th of this year. The conference this fall will constitute the "third round" of tariff negotiations under the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade concluded at Geneva in 1947. The United States plans to negotiate with 17 other countries on possible tariff modifications on various articles all the way from baby carriages and bottle caps to lead and zinc-bearing ores. On May 31, June 1 and June 2, spokesmen appeared before the Committee for Reciprocity Information on behalf of the domestic lead and zinc mining industries. Producers of these metals protested the inclusion of paragraphs 391 (lead-bearing ores, dust and mattes), 392 (lead bullion, lead in pigs and bars, and scrap lead), 393 (zinc-bearing ores of all kinds), and 394 (zinc in blocks, pigs or slabs, and zinc dust) of the Tariff Act of 1930, as amended in the list of articles to be considered for possible tariff concessions at Torquay. It was pointed out that although operating costs have more than doubled since 1939 tariffs on these metals were actually higher in that year than at present. This, coupled with the detrimental effects of the recent series of devaluations, has sounded the death knell for a substantial number of domestic lead and zinc mines-a most undesirable development in the face of the ominous international situation, according to these spokesmen. It was urged that higher rather than lower tariff rates are needed on these metals. The opinion was expressed that it was inconsistent to foster a high living standard in our western areas and then, once it is attained, to undermine that condition by minimizing the protection that was partly responsible for it. The main theme of some arguments implied that although every effort should be made to close the "dollar gap" abroad, serious consideration must be given the methods employed lest our national security position be jeopardized in the process. The House Committee on Foreign Affairs completed hearings on H. J. Res. 236, to provide for United States membership and participation in the International Trade Organization. Hearings began on April 19th and ran for over five weeks. Many witnesses from industry and government presented voluminous testimony, which will not be available for public distribution for several weeks. However, it is no secret that the most controversial provisions of the Draft Charter of the ITO are: (1) Article 17 (Chapter IV on Commercial Policy) which would obligate members to negotiate for the reduction of tariffs and the elimination of trade preferences; (2) Article 20 which would prohibit the use of quantitative restrictions for protective purposes; (3) Article 16 which promulgates rules to implement the principle of non-discrimination in international trade; and (4) provisions permitting the use of protective measures for promoting economic development, particularly in backward areas, even though such provisions are inconsistent with those of the three articles cited above. United States membership in the International Trade Organization is essential to the successful operation of that body in view of this country's position as the economic giant in the present international trade pattern. Many countries are reluctant to take any action toward the ratification of the charter until it is known what course America will pursue. However desirable or undesirable the ideal of free multilateral trade may be it is unlikely that this Government's participation in the ITO will materialize soon. Advices in Washington indicate that H. J. Res. 236 will not be enacted during the present session of Congress. The legislative pattern designed to secure Congressional approval of the ITO is similar to that of the St. Lawrence Seaway project. The Seaway project was pending in treaty form for several years before the Foreign Relations Committee of the Senate and when the Administration decided to incorporate this project into bill form it was found that, while it passed the House promptly, the Senate decided to pigeonhole it because of the obvious intent to circumvent the constitutional prerogative of the Senate to advise and consent to the ratification of treaties. The ITO bill may be slated for a similar fate. It is deemed essential by western Senators and Congressmen that the present session of Congress enact some form of mining legislation before its adjournment, now set for July 31st. These legislators from prominent ore-producing states do not desire to return to their home areas in the fall emptyhanded. Aside from that, it is entirely superfluous to reiterate the necessity for maintaining a healthy domestic mining industry as a bulwark against a sharp rise in the temperature of the "cold war". Now that S. 2105 has failed a new bill is taking shape in the Senate Interior and Insular Affairs Committee. It is similar in language to H. R. 8221 (to encourage the conservation and development of the mineral resources of the United States) reported by the House Public Lands Committee on May 3, 1950, but so far has failed to receive approval of the House Committee on Rules. There are some qualified observers in high circles in Washington as well as in the mining industry who favor a tax incentive program to stimulate investment in mining enterprises, as opposed to a conservation and exploration program. The Bureau of Mines and the Treasury Department have undertaken a joint study to determine the need for modification of the tax laws as they apply to mining. The study is scheduled for completion before the end of the year, and appears to be supplementary to the investigation initiated by the National Minerals Advisory Council which culminated in the submittal of recommendations to the Secretary of the Interior in December 1949. The "cold war" is largely responsible for the increased demand for metals. Stock-pile purchases and heavy industrial demand due to military needs distort markets and disrupt normal price trends. Such activity has an unhealthy influence on metal production, luring some producers into a state of dependency on the continuation of this condition. When stock-pile objectives are met sometime in the future purchases must then come to a halt unless international "fireworks" are touched off. It can only be hoped that technological improvements and further mechanization of mines coupled with the stimulus of a rising population will offset the anticipated drop in industrial demand and cessation of stockpile purchases when the international crisis abates.

"INTRODUCTION As underground mining continues to operate at deeper depths and in more complex geologic and geometric conditions, there has been an increased demand for higher design standards in ground control safety and stability within the mining industry. Over the past 20 years, NIOSH has developed, validated, and distributed a number of free software packages (ALPS, ARMPS, AMSS, ARBS, etc.) for the safe design of underground coal mines with respect to ground control. While these programs were initially developed on a, “stand alone model,” where all program data resides on an individual or workgroup computer, modern day web applications have begun to migrate toward a, “multiple-tier model,” allowing multiple users to access an application through an Internet connection. webGroundControl provides users with access to NIOSH ground control design software (ARBS, ALPS, and ARMPS) utilizing a web-based three-tier architecture allowing users to easily access ground control designs, perform on-demand calculations, and provide online collaboration between operational personnel and engineers through a web server. Given advancements in cloud computing as well as the expansion of Internet connectivity on the surface and underground, webGroundControl users will be able to access the applications anywhere (where permissible) at any time. As web-based computing technologies continue to advance and cloud computing gains popularity and momentum, there is an industry need to develop Internet based applications for mine and ground control design (Barczak et al., 2016). The purpose of this paper is to introduce and familiarize those in the mining industry with the basic framework and, more specifically, the user-interface of the webGroundControl application. It is expected that the mining industry will rapidly embrace this new product and webGroundControl will be a new paradigm for mining engineering computer applications. APPLICATION ARCHITECTURE With the advent of cloud computing, web-based applications have become more popular with their adoption of multiple-tier, or n-tier, architecture containing independently operating tiers. The three-tier application architecture utilized in webGroundControl (as outlined in Agioutantis and Newman, 2016) contains a Presentation Tier (Web Server), Logic Tier (Logic/Application Server), and Data Tier (Data Server) as shown in Figure 1. While tiers have the ability to be deployed across and operating on multiple servers, webGroundControl is currently being deployed on a single server located on a university desktop computer. The separation of the application into a series of tiers greatly increases the maintainability and scalability allowing for the adoption of new technologies that can be applied to a single tier without redesigning the software package. The Presentation Tier maintains the user interface translating client requests (through a web server) and displaying results (through a web browser). The Presentation Tier allows for on-demand access from multiple users and compatibility with a variety of personal computers, Smartphones, tablets, etc. on different operating systems. The Presentation Tier has been developed with respect to the HTML and JavaScript languages. Through the utilization of CSS, a coding language which describes the style of an HTML document, the webGroundControl display is able to spontaneously adapt to any browser and any screen. The development of the Presentation Tier will be discussed in more detail in subsequent sections of this paper."
