Vasos metalúrgicos podem ser revestidos com linhas de tijolos refratários, com ou sem argamassa. Devido ao grande número de interfaces entre os tijolos, o sub-sistema tijolo/junta impõe dificuldades computacionais ao projeto da montagem. Buscando comparar a influência do projeto refratário nas tensões presentes na estrutura, um revestimento com juntas secas foi modelado utilizando um material homogêneo equivalente. As propriedades termo-mecânicas deste material equivalente foram determinadas usando o método de Homogeneização Periódica e dependem tanto da temperatura quanto do estado da junta (aberta ou fechada, nas duas direções). Este modelo foi usado para simular uma Panela de Aço através do Método dos Elementos Finitos (MEF) com o intuito de demonstrar a influência dos seguintes parâmetros: presença ou ausência de juntas; espessura da junta e projeto refratário. O trabalho pretende auxiliar o desenvolvimento de projetos refratários e fornecer melhores estimativas da aplicabilidade de uma dada configuração.

To analyze the direct reduction of self-reducting briquettes producted with different electric arc furnace dust contents, three sets of homogeneous mixtures were produced with elephant grass biomass, iron ore, cement and furnace dust in increasing levels, which were submitted to thermogravimetric tests in muffle furnace and TGA furnace at variable temperatures and times. The curves of degree of reduction were obtained and the reduced briquettes were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results showed that the reducibility of the agglomerates is diminished by the increase of furnace dust, with variations of this result at higher temperatures. The observed microstructures were spherical particles, porous structure or whiskers. Based on XRD results, it was considered probable that the decrease of the degree of reduction with the increase of furnace dust content is related to the reaction between hematite and zincite, which is expected to be controlled by zinc diffusion.

Production of structural steel with a minimum yield strength of 700 Mpa produced as hot rolled coil has become increasingly popular due to cost considerations when compared to quench and temper equivalent product. This grade when produced as hot rolled coil requires the use of microalloy precipitation strengthening mechanisms. This is typically a combination of niobium and titanium microalloys. While the metallurgical concept of structural steel precipitation strengthening mechanisms has been well researched and published, actual implementation into the production process can be very challenging. In addition to achieving a minimum yield strength of 700 Mpa, in many applications additional mechanical property attributes of formability as measured by hole expansion testing along with low temperature toughness properties are now required. Achieving a balance of all the mechanical properties in a stable and repeatable performance in production using microalloy precipitation strengthening mechanisms further increases the challenges. This paper will discuss the metallurgical/process strategies required to successfully produce 700 Mpa minimum yield strength hot rolled structural steel coil. In addition, the role and goals of both niobium and titanium in this product design will be presented.

Dentre os revestimentos galvanizados a quente, o galvannealed (GA) destaca-se por possuir uma estrutura composta por fases Fe-Zn, o que lhe confere excelente desempenho na aplicação em peças de alta solicitação. A qualidade do revestimento GA é governada principalmente pelo tratamento de galvanneling, tendo em vista seu efeito na formação dos compostos Fe-Zn. A influência desse tratamento é ainda mais pronunciada em aços com características de bake hardenability (BH), pela presença de elementos que alteram a sua reatividade. Nesse estudo, foram avaliados os efeitos das condições de galvannealing na formação do revestimento GA sobre aços BH. Para tal, ciclos de galvannealing variando-se a temperatura de aquecimento entre 530°C e 580°C foram simulados em escala de laboratório. Além dos ciclos completos, foram também realizadas interrupções do tratamento ao longo da etapa de encharque, através de resfriamentos bruscos das amostras, com o objetivo de avaliar a microestrutura do revestimento ao longo de todo o tratamento. Os resultados permitiram determinar os mecanismos de formação e crescimento dos compostos intermetálicos Fe-Zn que constituem o revestimento galvannealed, e correlacioná-los com as características do produto final, de maneira a estabelecer faixas adequadas de processamento desse material.

The Moab Khotsong Metallurgical Complex comprises a gold recovery circuit (Noligwa Gold Plant) and a uranium recovery circuit (South Uranium Plant). The metallurgical complex employs the reverse leach technology for the recovery of uranium; specifically, uranium extraction prior to gold using acid leaching processing. The inherent uranium species in the ore are uraninite, coffinite and brannerite. The slurry that has been subjected to the uranium leach is further subjected to solid-liquid separation to separate the uranium in a solution through counter-current decantation and the solids (solids carrying all the gold), which are repulped and returned to the gold plant for gold processing. The uranium leaching process is critical to the uranium playing a pivotal role as a value adding by-product to the gold operation. The benefit of adopting this reverse leach process, for improved gold recovery, is that it exposes gold particles occluded within the uranium matrices and avails them for cyanidation. However, the drive for operational efficiency in uranium extraction must be weighed against the incremental operating cost against the backdrop of depressed spot uranium market prices. Over the years, efforts were directed at maintaining the benefit of extracting uranium to enhance gold recovery and simultaneously, optimising the operating cost model for the uranium operation to remain relevant to the gold operation. The aim of this paper and the corresponding presentation is to give an account of the uranium processing optimisation journey embarked on over the years; namely, the operational tradeoffs made in the process of ensuring that uranium continues to add value to the gold operation. These challenges were faced while striking a fine balance between processing cost and operational efficiencies against the prevailing depressed uranium spot market prices. Mineralogical- and laboratory tests conducted form the support basis for the results and observations articulated in the paper. This paper addresses the challenge to define a concept of entropy (state of order) for a textured particle system. Both the particle texture, the intergrowth respectively, and the particle size influence the order of a particle system. The smaller the particles become, the more particles form the solid system and the more permutations of the structure of the particle bed are possible. The texture within a particle is fixed, as long as it is not subjected to changes due to comminution, flocculation or agglomeration. The paper will present a definition of entropy, which is able to reflect qualitatively and quantitatively the intergrowth and the size (distribution) of the particles. Theoretical examples will show how different breakage mechanisms can be identified using the entropy definition. Dithiophosphate (DTP) is classically used as a co-collector in sulphide mineral flotation, where xanthate-DTP mixtures have been shown to synergistically improve mineral flotation performance. Notwithstanding the improved recoveries observed, ethyl DTP does not appear to behave as a conventional collector, since it has been shown that it does not adsorb onto certain sulphide mineral surfaces. Recent investigations have nevertheless indicated that when ethyl DTP does not adsorb onto the sulphide mineral surface, the presence of a non-ionic frother can activate a synergistic increase in pulp phase mineral recovery, and bubble-particle attachment probability. A regular solution approach was used to determine the interactions between thiol collectors and non-ionic frothers at the air-water interface. Attractive interactions were observed between longer alkyl chain DTPs and frothers, whereas the activity of xanthates at the air-water interface were too weak to determine if an interaction was occurring. This is the first time that such interactions have been shown for the DTP-frother system and represents an important contribution to our understanding of the role of DTP reagents in the flotation process. Estudos têm comprovado a afinidade e a eficiência do fosfato de cálcio bifásico (BCP) em aplicações médicas e odontológicas, assim como elemento adsorvente para o gás CO2, devido a sua característica de material poroso. O BCP é composto pela combinação entre hidroxiapatita (HA) e beta fosfato tricálcico (?-TCP), na proporção usual de 2/3 de HA e 1/3 de ?-TCP. Trata-se da mistura entre as fases solúvel, ?-TCP, e estável, HA, das biocerâmicas. O BCP é obtido por meio de tratamento térmico (para cristalização) do ACP (fosfato de cálcio amorfo), na mufla, em temperaturas variando de 600 a 1300ºC, por cerca de 24 horas – calcinação. A caracterização e a comparação de amostras amorfas e amostras calcinadas, baseia-se na utilização de aparelhos DRX, MEV, FRX, difração de laser (Cilas) e análise de área superficial (BET). A seguir, na etapa de granulometria, BCP e ACP são peneirados em duas faixas de grãos: menores que 38µm e entre 53µm-38µm. As análises por microscopia eletrônica evidenciam que o ACP possui estrutura semelhante à hidroxiapatita (HA), mas como os seus cristais são muito pequenos, essa fase aparece como amorfa. As análises por DRX indicaram a ausência de impureza cristalina distinguível nas partículas de BCP e a presença de um pico característico de ?-TCP. Sabe-se que a produção de BCP demanda maior gasto energético em relação ao ACP, devido ao tratamento térmico (calcinação).

Foi fabricada uma matriz hipoeutética de Al-2%Ni e adicionado nela concentrações de 0,5; 1,0; e 1,5 % de nanotubos de carbono de paredes múltiplas (NTCPM). A fabricação do material estudado aconteceu por fundição e resfriamento unidirecional brusco originado grãos predominantemente colunares. Os ensaios mecânicos mostram que concentrações maiores de nanotubo na matriz provocam acréscimo na propriedade mecânica e que em áreas mais distante da base extratora de calor a microdureza aumenta. Na amostra que contém 1,5% de nanotubos o valor da microdureza em áreas da posição P1 distante 5 mm da interface metal/molde é aproximadamente de 120 HV, já em áreas da posição P5 distante 45 mm, se aproxima de 210 HV. A resistência a tração é influenciada pela adição de NTC. A matriz possui uma resistência a tração de 64 Mpa, enquanto que a adição de 1,5% de NTC eleva esse valor para 135 MPa.

Embora a metalurgia do pó e o forjamento sejam técnicas totalmente consolidadas no mundo industrializado, surge o forjamento de sinterizados e o sinterforjamento para somar as vantagens de cada processo convencional em uma única técnica de processamento. O presente trabalho propõe a obtenção de uma peça denominada cruzeta, forjada utilizando billet sinterizado como matéria prima. O pó de ferro ASC 100,29 e o grafite UNICARBO 50- fino foram utilizados para obtenção do Billet , através da metalurgia do pó convencional, pressão de 600 MPa, a partir da curva de compressibilidade. Foi escolhida a cruzeta como peça alvo, devido a seu uso na indústria automotiva. A geometria da peça foi modelada em Solidworks e posteriormente realizado o projeto e construção das matrizes para o forjamento. Realizaram-se ensaios de compressão para determinar e analisar a densificação do produto, em função dos fechamentos de poros, do billet sinterizado. Ainda, foram realizados cálculos de volume para determinar a altura do billet necessária para o preenchimento da cavidade da geometria determinada. Confeccionaram-se billet sinterizados a 1150ºC em atmosfera redutora, mantido até 900°C e rapidamente transferida para uma matriz fechada de forjamento para a execução do processo de sinterforjamento a morno. Foram realizados ensaios metalográfico, de dureza e microdureza do billet sinterforjados para validação do processo. Após este processo, obteve-se peças sinterforjadas, onde analisou-se o preenchimento, ausência de dobra e trincas macroscópicas.

Os problemas gerados no processamento do aço inoxidável AISI 316 são um grande problema do setor metal mecânico, por exemplo, no processo de usinagem, onde o material sofre altas taxas de deformação plástica e elevadas temperaturas na região de contato ferramenta-peça. Além disso, a adesão de aço inoxidável em materiais de maior dureza, no caso a ferramenta, também são problemas enfrentados. Neste trabalho foi feito um estudo qualitativo em escala laboratorial do contato entre um material de maior dureza (aço AISI M2 nitretado a plasma) e o aço AISI 316. Foram realizados ensaios de microdureza Vickers e rugosidade afim de caracterizar as amostras de aço AISI M2. Ensaios tribológicos do tipo Ball-on-Plate foram realizados com a finalidade de determinar o coeficiente de atrito ao longo do tempo para os pares tribológicos formados. Análises feitas via MEV/EDS foram feitas tanto nas trilhas geradas nas superfícies das amostras quanto nas esferas, para detectar pontos de adesão, deformação plástica e transferência de material entre as duas superfícies. Ficou comprovado que a nitretação a plasma com gaiola catódica proporcionou um menor coeficiente de atrito ao longo do tempo quando posta em contato com a esfera de aço inoxidável, bem como foi possível observar a formação de uma menor quantidade de pontos de adesão de aço inoxidável para esta superfície.

The effect of low-temperature plasma carburizing treatment on the micro-abrasive wear resistance of AISI 420 steel was investigated by mean of a CSM Calowear ball-cratering equipment. Carburized samples were treated at temperatures of 350, 400, 450 and 500°C for a fixed time of 12 h, using a gas mixture containing 99.5% (80% H2+20% Ar)+0.5% CH4. Micro-scale abrasive wear tests were conducted with a 25.4 mm AISI 420 steel sphere, using an abrasive suspension of alumina (Al2O3) with particle size of 1 ?m (abrasive concentration of 0.11 g/cm³). The contact normal force, abrasive flow and ball rotation speed were fixed at: 0.5 N, 0,2 drop/s, and 120 rpm. The wear craters were analyzed using a confocal laser microscope, Olympus OLS 3000. The wear analyses were performed for test times of: 30, 60, 90, 120, 180, 360, 540, 720 and 900 s (equivalent sliding distance: 0.84, 1.68, 2.52, 3.36, 5.04, 10.09, 15.14, 20.19 and 25.23 m, respectively). The results indicate that the wear coefficient in the outer layer and in the diffusion layer are different, being lower in the latter. It was also verified that the wear coefficient on the outer layer region decreases with increasing treatment temperature in the range of 350 to 450 °C, and increase again for 500ºC. The diffusion layer wear coefficient is similar for all the carburized samples. Finally, for all studied conditions, the analysis of the wear craters surface indicates the occurrence of grooving and micro-rolling abrasion wear modes.

Foi estudado o efeito do método de incorporação de pó de serra em PP/EPDM/talco, nas propriedades mecânicas e térmicas do compósito final. Os três métodos de incorporação foram: pré-mistura, por tamboreamento, de todos os componentes com injeção subsequente; alimentação em separado da fibra, da matriz polimérica e compatibilizante em extrusora dupla rosca co-rotacional, com injeção subsequente; pré-mistura, por tamboreamento, de todos os componentes, alimentação conjunta em extrusora dupla rosca co-rotacional, com injeção subsequente. A adição de fibras conferiu maiores valores de temperatura de deflexão ao calor (HDT), resistências à tração e à flexão, módulo de Young e menores resistência ao impacto e deformação em relação à matriz. Para o mesmo teor de fibras, o método de alimentação conjunta apresentou os maiores valores de resistência à tração e flexão, módulo de Young, e HDT, e maior queda na resistência ao impacto. O método com dois alimentadores apresentou maior deformação e maior resistência ao impacto. Análise termogravimétrica revelou menor teor de fibra incorporado, para o método com dois alimentadores em relação aos outros métodos. A análise de micrografias obtidas por MEV não revelou diferenças significativas na adesão entre fibra e matriz, quanto ao método de incorporação.

A câmara de empuxo do Motor Foguete a Propelente Líquido (MFPL) L75 é composta de uma liga Cobre cromo, classe C18200. A jaqueta de refrigeração, responsável pela extração de calor, é feita de aço inoxidável AISI 316L. No que tange ao processo de fabricação, a união entre a câmara de combustão e a jaqueta de refrigeração é uma etapa crítica, pois envolve processos de união de materiais dissimilares e de componentes de geometria complexas. Este trabalho visa contribuir à fabricação do conjunto motor foguete, por meio da soldagem a laser entre a câmara e a jaqueta. Com o uso de um laser a fibra de alta potência, foi possível verificar que existe uma condição otimizada de solda sobreposta, inox sobre Cu(Cr), com potências entre 1.000 e 1.300 W e velocidades de soldagem de 0,05 m/min a 1 m/min. Embora as análises mostrem heterogeneidade microestrutural, pela dissolução parcial de uma fase na outra, obteve-se níveis de dureza aproximadamente constantes ao longo da profundidade da junta.

Phosphorus is a problematic impurity that has challenged steelmakers for decades. Steel producers have developed specific technologies to eliminate phosphorus prior to and during steelmaking. These process technologies reduce phosphorus to various degrees and increase the cost of making steel. The state-of-the art dephosphorization technologies are described and operating costs compared for each of the established technologies. Costs are discussed in terms of price penalties for high P iron ore and selling premiums for low P steel. From this, strategies to control P in a cost effective manner are described.

"Automatic identification and characterisation of mineral raw materials and beneficiated products are of major importance in mineral processing. However, minerals show great variety in their composition and physical and chemical properties. Industrial minerals may contain the same elements in about the same amount. In these cases backscatter electron imaging or chemical analysis are not sufficient to identify the minerals. Another problem arises when micro textures are not detectable in traditional imaging or the grain size is smaller than the X-ray spatial resolution.As a supplementary technique in these cases, application of crystallographic information by electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) in the scanning electron microscope (SEM) may be a suitable method. By means of EBSD, diagnostic mineral information can be achieved if indexible patterns are provided.Until now EBSD has not been used frequently on geological samples for mineral and micro structure discrimination.The technique has been demonstrated on three Norwegian mineral raw materials and one Italian marble and shows that it has some advantages compared to traditional techniques."

Synthetic water with a calcium concentration of 80 ppm and 500 ppm was prepared and the flotation results obtained compared to a simple electrolyte in order to determine the effect water quality has on pentlandite and pyroxene surface alteration and, ultimately, floatability. During the study, the possible effect of interactions between the minerals investigated and Ca2+ ions in the presence of sodium isobutyl xanthate was studied at pH 6 and pH 9 by means of zeta potential determinations, microflotation tests and ToF-SIMS analysis. The results obtained have demonstrated that water quality does play a significant role in flotation recovery at the experimental conditions used.

The carbon solubility of the CaO-Al2O3-FeO-SiO2-MgO slag, the main system formed in the Ruhrstahl-Heraeus (RH) vacuum degasser, was measured at 1873 K to understand the effect of slag compositions on the carbon contamination in the ultra-low carbon (ULC) steels. The stable form of carbon was demonstrated to be carbonate by plotting the log [(wt%C)/aC] ratio against the log p(O2) which ranged -11 < log p(O2,atm) < -9. The carbon solubility of the CaO-Al2O3-FeO-SiO2-MgO slag can be estimated using thermodynamic model. The distribution ratio of carbon increased with increasing concentration of FeO due to the FeO reduction reaction and increased basicity of slag. The carbonate capacity of the CaO-Al2O3-FeO-SiO2-MgO slag can be expressed as a linear function of the activity of lime and the optical basicity.

The Great Belt Link is a $3.5 billion fixed link across an 18 km (12 mile) wide body of water that separates the island of Zealand, on which Copenhagen is situated, and the main land mass of Denmark, Jutland, which is part of the European continent. The project consists of three main contracts. The first contract is an 8 km (5 mile) long, two-bore railway tunnel for the eastern half, the second contract is a 6.6 km (4 mile) combination railroad and highway bridge for the western half, and the third contract is a 6.7 km (4 mile) long high-level highway bridge for the eastern half. This paper will discuss the Eastern Railway Tunnel Project and the methods of construction that the joint venture consortium plans to use, along with its equipment selection. The ground conditions to be encountered begin with glacial tills, which are a mixture of clay, silt, sand, gravel, cobbles, and granitic boulders. The boulders can be up to 1-3 m (3-10 ft) in diameter. Underlying the till is a marl which is sometimes highly fractured with hydrostatic pressures of up to 8 bar. About 40% of the tunnel is in till and 40% in marl, with the remaining 20% being a mixed face of the two formations.
