One of the main factors affecting the suitability of an ore for autogenous grinding is the ore’s competency, ie providing enough critical stones for the grinding process. Several experimental test routines exist and are used for assessing the viability of the ore for autogenous grinding. However, very little attention is given to the generation of fatigue in large stones experiencing repeated shocks in the mill. To investigate this, large pebbles sampled from an industrial autogenous grinding mill running hard and soft ores were categorised based on the grinding energy. From the pebbles, small drill core samples were prepared and went through a series of fatigue cycle tests. Both hard and soft ores showed similar average resistance to failure in compression tests, but the hard ore had a consistent resistance with lower variations. The cores were scanned by XCT before and in-between fatigue tests at the highest reachable resolution, 1.5 µm voxel size. The outcome showed that a higher number of micro-cracks were visible in the soft ore compared to the hard ore. The frequency of micro-crack development in the soft ore may be the reason for its lower specific grinding energy compared to the hard ore. It is obvious that for realistic conditions in an autogenous grinding mill, stones are pre-weakened by fatigue before they fracture. Therefore, shortcut methods focusing only on running tests on fresh and small samples may operate in unrealistic conditions by ignoring the fatigue phenomenon. This is even more important for ores that are on the borderline to be considered as competent for autogenous milling.

"Calicut Bypass Phase-II project included construction of 7 m high embankment over soft compressible clays up to 18 m in thickness. Approx 1.5 km length of road out of a total 5 km length consisted of abandoned paddy fields which were low lying, waterlogged and marshy in nature. On the basis of excellent results achieved in earlier phases of the by-pass construction, ground improvement work by installing pre-fabricated vertical drains (PVD) was undertaken to stabilize the embankment foundation along the weak clay areas prior to road pavement construction to avoid large post construction settlement as well as to improve the lateral stability during and after embankment construction. This project perhaps stands out as one of the highway projects completed within a very short time period of total 18 months including four month long heavy monsoon period, when embankment construction was not possible and construction of two bridges across rivers. All activities including the ground improvement had to be programmed and completed within the shortest time period possible. The paper discusses details of the extensive ground improvement and soil instrumentation carried out for the project and will illustrate how careful planning and execution can reduce the period required for highway projects involving ground improvement.INTRODUCTIONPhase-II construction of Calicut by-pass was undertaken on a priority basis by the State of Kerala in 2014. The main contract was awarded to M/S ULCCS Ltd, Kozhikode, Kerala and the ground improvement work was awarded to M/S Geo-Enviro Engineers P Ltd, as specialist agency to design and execute the work.Soil investigation carried out confirmed thick soft clay deposits below GL in three areas along the road alignment totaling approx 1.5 km in length. These areas were low lying, waterlogged and marshy in nature. Highway embankment had to be constructed up to 7 m in height above existing GL to form the proposed road alignment along these areas. On the basis of excellent results achieved in earlier phases of the by-pass construction using pre-fabricated vertical drains or PVD (R. Radhakrishnan, 2006), ground improvement using PVD had been included in the contract to stabilize the embankment foundation along the weak clay areas prior to highway embankment construction to avoid large post construction settlement as well as to improve lateral stability during its construction."

"Coal transported by rail for Thermal Power Plant in Haldia, West Bengal, India, was to be received and stored in Coal Complex comprising of Wagon Tippler, Track Hopper, Junction Houses and network of horizontal and inclined tunnels. The site was very soft with high ground water level. Deep excavation and dewatering posed great difficulty. Original plan was to drive about 1000 m of steel sheet pile and well sinking which had major impact on cost and time. High ground water was identified as the main problem. Controlling water level and maintaining it would allow open excavation over major areas. Scheme for lowering aquifer with one and two-stage well-point dewatering system was developed following basic principles of groundwater and seepage. Arrangements of wells, installation and pumping were worked out in detail. Water levels could be lowered below bottom levels of excavation. Design of sheet pile was modified under lowered ground water condition. Overall length and depth of sheet pile were reduced drastically. Open excavation was possible in segments over major areas. The scheme was highly successful in smooth and fast progress of underground works. The works were completed safely months ahead of schedule time and with significant saving in cost.INTRODUCTIONThe Coal Receiving Complex of thermal power plant comprised of 250 m long 8 m deep Track Hopper (TH), 12 m deep Wagon Tippler (WT) with provision for addition of another Wagon Tippler. Track center lines of TH and WT were very close. Coal unloading facilities were connected with a network of underground tunnels and Transfer Points (TP) upto Pent House (PH). The facilities were optimized in a compact layout within about 400 m x 120 m area. Initially excavation for TH was started adopting side slope of (1 V : 1.5 H) with 2 m wide berm and dewatering by in-pit sump and pump. When depth of excavation reached about 5-6 m, failure occurred over a long stretch as shown in Figs. 1a - 1b photos. Further work was stopped to develop scheme for carrying out deep excavation and civil works safely."

While this conference is dedicated to the examination of "Challenges in Mineral Processing," the broader aspect of the pursuit of this subject is Research and Development in the Mining Industry. When I was asked to speak at this symposium, I hesitated to accept. While my early schooling, training and professional occupation were in the field of this symposium, it was so long ago that I no longer feel competent to contribute anything of interest to you except perhaps for a limited historical perspective, which most of you probably already know. However, it might be worthwhile to explore the more general aspect of research and development from the viewpoint of management, as this is the stance from which I dealt with the subject for the last 30 years or so. While most managements generally have a positive view of research and development, few of the leaders in the mineral industry have actually had the personal experience of doing research for a long enough time to have obtained a full understanding and the feel for its place in the long-term technological innovation that our industry must foster. I graduated from the University of California in Berkeley with a Bachelor of Science degree and a major in metallurgy. It was during the great depression of the thirties, and it was difficult to obtain a practical job in the industry. I got a scholarship at the Montana School of Mines and received a Master of Science degree in ore dressing under Professor A. M. Gaudin, followed by another year with him pursuing research. Anyone who studied under him, or knew him well, would assert that this was a unique experience. Gaudin had a brilliant mind and a profound respect for science and the scientific method. Alcoa operates two bauxite mines at Huntly and Willowdale, located within the jarrah forest south-east of Perth in Western Australia. Ore reserves are shallow but extensive, and mining pits averaging around 20 ha in size are distributed across a mining region in a mosaic pattern, linked to a centrally-located crusher by a radiating network of haulroads. A mining or crusher region is defined partly in terms of economic haul distances, and new regions are opened once the current regions’ reserves have been mined. Since commencing in 1973, the Huntly mine has constructed and progressively closed three previous mining regions and is presently in a transition from the fourth and current region of McCoy to the new region of Myara. At present rates of production, approximately 450 ha is cleared, mined and rehabilitated each year.The value of topsoil in returning a diverse mix of native jarrah forest plant species and supplying nutrients, organic matter and soil biota to rehabilitated areas has long been recognised. Managing the topsoil resource is therefore a critical element in the success of rehabilitation outcomes, but the distribution and dynamic nature of mining operations pose significant planning and logistical challenges. The regionalised approach to mining at Huntly also presents a range of issues for what are, in effect, soil management plans for episodic mine closure. The nature of mining and rehabilitation operations are described, together with the planning processes that Alcoa follows to quantify, track and report on soil movement. A case study of the Huntly mine demonstrates that an integrated operational and life-of-mine planning process is essential for successful and cost-effective mine rehabilitation.CITATION:Hackett, L and Grigg, A, 2014. Survival of the mining industry as a viable economic entity in the United States is being seriously threatened by declining grades of ore reserves, rising operational and capital costs, and increased governmental taxes, restrictions, and subsidizing of third world competition. Discovery of major high-grade deposits is becoming increasingly unlikely. International competitiveness of the U.S. deposits will depend upon 'Yankee Ingenuity,' innovations in mining methods, metallurgical treatment, and financial arrangements, and a viable national strategy. This will require not only effective management for control of operations, but management that encourages breakthroughs in technology, financing, labor relations, and in public and governmental understanding. The mine geologist and the exploration geologist both have important roles to play in all aspects of this fight for survival of the industry.

THE Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co., located in the Globe-Miami district at Inspiration, Ariz., became a producer of copper in 1915. From 1915 until 1948, 116,278,000 tons of ore were produced from underground workings by the block-caving system of mining. In April 1948, open-pit ore production from portions of the ore body was started and earlier plans for block-caving in these areas were abandoned. The change was due to economic conditions.

One of the greatest environmental issues related to the development of the mining activity is the generation of Acid Mine Drainage (AMD). Many methods have been developed for AMD treatment, being wetlands a good option for heavy metal removal. In this sense, the implementation of artificial wetlands for the treatment of mining effluents would seem to be an environmentally friendly alternative. In this paper, we present the results on the elimination of heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Pb and Fe) using two Peruvian native species such as Schoenoplectus californicus (C.A. Mey.) and Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. Ex Steud. The results show that Schoenoplectus californicus preferentially removes copper (82 and 90%), lead (88 and 92%) and iron (28 and 69%), whereas Phragmites australis removes copper (68 and 87%) and zinc (53 and 95%). Likewise, it is observed that the Schoenoplectus californicus mainly retains the ions in its root, copper (89%), zinc (84%) and iron (76%). While the Phragmites australis accumulates iron (62%) and copper (74%) in the steam and root part respectively

Piles are common type of deep foundation elements used for the special bridges, transmission towers, Jetties, and tall structures. Lateral loads on the structures can be due to either earth pressures, wind, waves, impact, moving vehicles and eccentric application of axial loads or in combination of the loads. Hence the lateral capacity of piles plays a major role in determining the pile dimensions. The laterally loaded pile analysis is a soil-structure interaction problem as the lateral capacity of pile depends on the soil strength and stiffness parameters and its reaction to the lateral load on pile. The common approach to determine the lateral load analysis of piles is the Beam on Lateral Springs Method also known as “p-y” method. In this method the pile is modelled as a beam and supporting soil is modelled as lateral springs. This study is focused on the comparison of output obtained from three geotechnical softwares namely FB-MultiPier, L- Pile and Wallap. L-Pile Software is based on Finite Difference Method, Wallap on Horizontal Subgrade Modulus Method and FB MultiPier on Finite Element Method. Pile response in terms of deflection, shear force and bending moments under vertical and horizontal loads from above three software are compared and concluded.

The demand for environmentally friendly commercial explosives has increased globally due to concerns regarding environmentally friendly mining activities. Ammonium nitrate fuel oil (ANFO) and bulk emulsion explosives (BEE) are two kinds of civil explosives primarily used in coal and mineral mining in Indonesia. Indonesia is one of the leading countries in coal and mineral mining production and export, with abundant resources; therefore, the consumption of civil explosives such as ANFO and BEE is enormous. The selection and evaluation of commercial explosives are mostly done on the commercial and technical side, and no assessment is made based on environmental aspects. This preliminary study evaluates the economic value and environmental burden of greenhouse gas emissions produced by ANFO and BEE and determines which type of explosives is more environmentally friendly. The combination of environmental and economic indicators, eco-efficiency (E/E), was selected to investigate BEE’s economic and environmental performance compared to ANFO. The life cycle of greenhouse gas emissions of BEE and AN was determined using previously available studies and simple calculations. The cost of the product or explosives was used to represent the economic value. The E/E results showed that environmental and economic sustainability could be enhanced using BEE.

The Selwyn gold-copper operation is wholly owned and operated by the Arimco mining group. The mine is located 150 kilometres south-east of Mount Isa. The primary extraction method for the gold-copper 251 orebody is by sub level open stoping. Secondary extraction is from the mass blasting of the remaining crown and rib pillars. The final mass blast of the 251 orebody occurred in December 1993. This paper details the design and execution of that firing.

A substantial lifestyle destination in the United Arab Emirates, in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi comprising of 1315 villas, town houses and non-residential leisure facilities is built over an area of 280 hectares of former mangrove areas, natural sands and reclaimed lands. Large-scale subsoil investigations including field and laboratory testing carried out dividing the entire site in to 7 clusters. This investigation revealed alternating layers of loose sands and silty clays within the load influence zone of planned foundations, showing susceptibility to excessive settlements. Therefore, ground improvement works were undertaken using a combination of stone columns, Rapid Impact Compaction (RIC) and excavation and replacement of soils plus a 0.4m thick load transfer platform. This was necessary to limit the settlements, increase-bearing capacity and prevent long-term settlements. 30 no’s of full-scale Zone Load Tests, ZLT were carried out each for a duration of 30 days in order to ascertain the anticipated long-term settlements in the clay layers. In addition, further testing of electrical cone penetration tests, CPT, and Plate Load Tests, PLT. The use of Priebe and Asaoka’s observational procedure were applied to predict the final settlements and the use of back-analysis from the 30 days Zone Load Tests, ZLT results to establish the site-specific consolidation parameters in clay layers to optimize the design and ground improvement works.

Open-pit mine planning is a key process in the definition of mineral reserves and their efficient removal. Ore in open-pit mines is extracted bymining sequential pits called pushbacks. Pushbacks need to satisfy complex geometrical constraints to ensure the efficient usage of equipment. To date, no algorithms that both account for those constraints and maximizeNPV, are commercially available. Therefore, pushback design is done by engineers relying on their expertise to incorporate practical features intothe output of commercial tools. In this article, we present a new algorithm that produces close to optimal practical pushbacks and we illustrate its performance in real mines.

Waste Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) are a metals-rich fraction of electronic waste (e-waste) streams, and globally it has been demonstrated that they can be recycled gainfully to recover the metals. Reported successful cases of PCB recycling are carried out in large volumes, using high-level technology and high capital investment smelter house operations. This presents entry barriers for recyclers in developing economies where capital may not be accessible, and the waste volumes are not sufficient to warrant large scale operations. Hydrometallurgical processes have the potential to provide an option for the scalable processing of smaller volumes of PCBs and can be set up at relatively lower capital costs. However, to date, the hydrometallurgical treatment options available rely on precursor communition and classification processes that also require high capital and energy costs. This paper presents an overview of the work done under the Minerals to Metals signature theme towards understanding e-waste recycling processes and developing pre-processing and characterisation of PCBs in order to unlock potential for local end processing in developing economies, using South Africa as a case study. The structure of PCBs is reviewed, and the current size reduction techniques and the subsequent leaching processes are discussed. São apresentados e discutidos os resultados de estudos de pesquisa para o desenvolvimento de prática para reciclagem de sucata refratária na Usiminas. O processo contempla a obtenção de agregados a partir do beneficiamento, por meio de britagem e classificação granulométrica, de tijolos de carro torpedo e placa gaveta após utilização industrial. Os agregados reciclados são adicionados em concretos refratários de alto desempenho. Os resultados de testes laboratoriais indicaram que os agregados podem ser incorporados com sucesso a concretos para canal de corrida. Essa prática tem sido amplamente utilizada para otimizar a manutenção e melhorar o desempenho ambiental.

Os Sistemas de Nível 2 de Otimização da ArcelorMittal Tubarão impactam diretamente no processo produtivo (Qualidade, Produtividade, Produção), sendo que parte considerável destes sistemas são executados em plataforma legada de hardware (Alpha Digital). Em 2011/2012, o fim do ciclo de vida da Plataforma Alpha (Open VMS) anunciado pela HP trouxe este tópico para um lugar de destaque na matriz de risco da Engenharia de Automação. A principal estratégia é a migração para novas plataformas, porém associa-se a esta opção um custo e tempo elevado, principalmente se tratando de sistemas de alta complexidade e disponibilidade. A gestão de um estoque de sobressalentes também se torna cada vez mais difícil devido à escassez destes equipamentos no mercado global. Considerando estes fatores, a busca de soluções alternativas de curto prazo se fez necessária. Uma tecnologia de emulação e virtualização de plataforma foi validada e um projeto piloto implantado no sistema responsável pela otimização do processo de reaquecimento de placas do Laminador de Tiras a Quente. O uso desta tecnologia promoveu uma portabilidade direta do sistema para um hardware padrão de mercado (Intel x64), em curto prazo e sem impactos operacionais, podendo ser disseminada para outros sistemas, garantindo um pulmão para futuras migrações.

O trabalho consiste na avaliação das Tensões Residuais através da técnica dos Furos-Cegos. O componente em estudo consiste em chapas de Aço A36 aplicadas para compor a estrutura de prensas hidraulicas. Com auxílio do software Solid Works versão 2013, foi realizado a simulação do estado de tensões sofridos pelas chapas quando a prensa hidraulica encontra-se em trabalho, determinando assim o seu fator de segurança. Em seguida, pelo método da aproximação sucessiva, foi adicionado furos-cegos ou furos passantes com diâmetros variados ao longo da geometria das chapas a fim de verificar o comportamento dos estados de tensões. Portanto, através da aplicação de furos-cegos nas chapas, foi possível identificar o diâmetro e posição ideal que permitiu um ganho significativo no fator de segurança das chapas, permitindo assim, reduzir o número de chapas no processo impactando diretamente nos custos e no tempo de fabricação do equipamento.

A elaboração de planos de mistura é feita em uma coqueria para uniformizar a qualidade das misturas. Um problema recorrente é a distribuição destes carvões nas dosadoras para serem misturados. A distribuição, no plano, destes carvões nas dosadoras é feita de forma manual, levando em consideração apenas o conhecimento do operador. A proposta é apresentar uma modelagem matemática de programação linear para resolver o problema da distribuição de carvões em dosadoras, segundo restrições de utilização das dosadoras dentro da faixa ótima, composição da mistura e uniformização das correias transportadoras, para reduzir sobrecarga nas linhas de dosadoras, com a finalidade de execução de um plano de mistura de carvões. Foram utilizados métodos de pesquisa operacional utilizando o algoritmo Simplex.

Dentre os mecanismos de desgaste existentes o desgaste por abrasão é responsável por cerca de 50% de todo o desgaste gerado. Alinhado à busca do desenvolvimento de novos mercados para o aço inoxidável, foi desenvolvida uma metodologia, para a medição da taxa de desgaste abrasivo de diferentes aços. Uma politriz foi escolhida para o ensaio devido à possibilidade de controlar a força, tipo de abrasivo, vazão de água, tempo e velocidade de rotação do disco. Para o ensaio foram preparados corpos de prova do aço P410D com dimensões de 40x40mm. Os corpos de prova foram fixados em suportes de baquelite e este conjunto foi acoplado junto à politriz. Após a escolha dos parâmetros ideais para o teste foram realizados testes comparando a taxa de desgaste de diferentes tipos de aços permitindo ranqueá-los de acordo com sua resistência ao desgaste abrasivo.
