Plant for the production of sulphuric acid from pyrites flotation concentrates was commissioned at Cockle Creek during 1956, to meet increasing demands for commercial acid and superphosphate. Pyrite was chosen as raw material because of the uncertain supplyposition of imported brimstone and the desirability of utilising domestic sulphur.Desulphurisation of the pyrite is performed by two 40-ton per day roasters of the Turbulent Layer type operated under licence from the Badische Analin and Soda Fabrik (B.A.S.F.) organisation. These units are the first of their kind commissioned in the southernhemisphere. Pyrite is fed to the roasters in the as-received un-dried condition. Waste heat steam production is coupled with electricity generation within the plant. Sulphur dioxide is produced at comparatively high strengths and cleaned by conventional cyclone and hot electro-filter equipment.The acid unit has a capacity of 100 mono tons of sulphuric acid per day and includes cooling and wash towers, mist precipitators, a single stage drying tower, 4-pass oxidation section and absorption system.INTRODUCTIONSulphuric acid has been manufactured at Cockle Creek Works since 1913, when the first chamber nitration plant was commissioned. The raw material was brimstone roasted in Herreschoff furnaces. Since that time three additional chamber units have been constructed and have produced acid from brimstone, zinc concentrates, pyrites and -spent oxide, according to changing economic and supply factors.Three chamber units are still in operation. Contact processes have become increasingly important since the first Schroder-Grillo unit was commissioned in 1923. Six of these 5-ton per day units were operating in the mid-thirties, but have since been demolished. The subject of many discussions and technical papers in the last 20 years has been the prediction of the well-bore pressure gradients that are required to induce or extend fractures in subsurface formations. The subject merits this attention because of the frequently recurring problems that arise from an inability to predict fracture pressure gradients. Encountered in several common types of operations in the oil industry are problems associated with the prediction of formation fracture pressure gradients. When wells are being drilled in both new and old fields, lost circulation is often a very troublesome and expensive problem. Complete loss of circulation has been disastrous in some cases. Many times, such disasters could have been avoided if techniques for calculating fracture pressure gradient had been employed in the well plans, and if casing strings had been set, and mud weight plans had been followed accordingly. In areas of abnormally pressured formations, the prediction of fracture gradients during the well-planning stage is extremely important. In fact, it is as important as the prediction of formation pressure gradients, which has received a great deal of attention in recent years. There are several published methods used to determine fracture pressure gradients. However, none of these methods appears to be general enough to be used with much reliability in all areas. In 1957, Hub-bert and Willis published a classical paper that included the development of an equation used to predict the fracture extension pressure gradient in areas of incipient normal fau1ting.l Overburden stress gradient, formation pore pressure gradient and Poisson's ratio of rocks were the independent variables that were shown to control fracture pressure gradient, the dependent variable. In 1967, Matthews and Kelly published another fracture pressure gradient equation that is different from that of Hubbert and Willis in that a variable "matrix stress coefficient" concept was utilized.3 Later the same year, Costley wrote about a similar idea.5 Goldsmith and Wilson used a least-squares curve-fitting technique and field data from the Gulf Coast area to correlate fracture pressure gradient with formation pore pressure gradient and formation depth.' They noted that the fracture pressure gradient increased with increasing depth while the pore pressure gradient remained constant. In each of these cases, the problem for which a solution was sought was to determine the bottom-hole pressure gradient required to initiate or extend a fracture. Results of the previous work show that fracture pressure gradient is a function primarily of overburden stress gradient, pore pressure gradient, and the ratio of horizontal to vertical stress. There is argument for a fourth variable in that in many cases breakdown fracture pressure gradient is greater than the fracture extension pressure gradient. This report describes the development of a system which modifies an existing fly ash-foam remote mine sealing technique to make it capable of impounding water in a fire zone. The modification involves blending equal quantities of fly ash and bentonite to form the bulk of the seal, and blending a thin layer of fly ash and Huron Regulated Set Portland Cement (RSPC) as a coating. The modification replaces the pure fly ash approach, but continues to use a froth foam topping to complete the seal. The modified material system is implemented with minimal complexity by adapting a "Y" connector to the existing delivery system. Each bulk hauler (fly ash and bentonite, or RSPC) will pump into one leg of the 'Y'; and the blending will be controlled by two pinch valves. The development effort has involved an evaluation of potential material systems by using small sample, quarter scale, and full head tests. The small sample tests measured the basic properties of a large number of selected material combinations. Property measurements included capillarity, permeability, shrinkage, and shear strength. As a result of these tests, particular combinations of fly ash-bentonite and fly ash-cement were selected for scale model testing in a 1 /4 scale test facility. These tests simulated, in a scaled manner, the water rise and total head which would be experienced by a seal. The tests indicated that shrinkage in the fly ash-cement combination would always result in leakage; whereas, fly ash-bentonite mixes were impervious to water.

"INTRODUCTION At various times, North Carolina has supplied small quantities of brown-iron ore to the furnace o the South. Between 1917 and 1920, the quantity reported to the Federal Geological Survey was 126,000 tons. Most of this came from Cherokee County. 3/In furtherance of the program initiated by the Bureau of Mines to develop additional reserve of iron ore during the emergency, the Cherokee County deposits were examined by an engineer 4/ of the Bureau of Mines, and work was recommended on,12 properties.The project was begun in April 1944 and continued intermittently until April 1945, when work was stopped. THE decades immediately before and after the end of the nineteenth century (1890-1910) were a period of increased activity in mineral industry education. One reason for ,this, undoubtedly, was the rapid increase in mineral production in the decade 1880-1890; pig iron and copper production tripled; coal, lead, and zinc output more than doubled. Most of the other mineral substances followed the same general trend. Aluminum production began in 1886; petroleum output, which in 1888 was less than it was in 1882, almost doubled in the next three years. Gold alone showed no appreciable change until its discovery at Cripple Creek in 1891, followed by the Klondike in 1896, brought to boiling a public interest in minerals that had been simmering for some years previously. The first cyanide plant in the United States was erected at Bodie in 1893, and the first chlorination plant at Cripple Creek* the next year. Silver- lead smelting had already greatly developed, and the metallurgy of copper was almost transformed. The hearth area and smelting capacity of copper reverberatory furnaces more than quadrupled between 1878 and 1894; matte converters were first erected at Butte in 1884. Copper production of the United States in 1899 was 30 times that of 1872. While it was the increased technology used in mineral production that really made the field attractive for educated young men, undoubtedly they did not realize that, and were impressed mainly by the quantitative increase in output. Another factor was the increased general interest in engineering education; three times as many men took engineering degrees in the United States in 1890 as in 1880; 1893 showed almost a 56 per cent increase over 1890. In 1939 the Geological Society of America published a summary of the geology of the ore deposits of the Mississippi Valley region, This volume, edited by E. S. Bastin, contained contributions from the foremost students of the area which described theregionalgeologic setting of the various deposits as wel as the detailed geology as then known. The various ideas as to the origin of the ores were discussed with the general, though not unanimous, conclusion that the deposits were hydrothermal products, Only those deposits in the immediate Mississippi Valley area were considered without any attempt to introduce evidence from other districts generally accepted as being of the "Mississippi Valley type." Since 1939, much new information has come from extended studies of two of the important districts described in the 1939 report andimportant extensions of the known ore have been found. Likewise, concentrated geologic efforts have been fruitful in severa "Mississippi Valley type" districts - both U. S. andforeign - not treated in the 939 paper. The wealth of new field information on the structural and stratigraphic relations of this interesting ore type, coupled with the results of theoretical and laboratory studies of the past 18 years, makes desirable a review of our present knowledge and interpretation of these important deposits which for many years have yielded over 20 percent of the world's annual production of lead and zinc, together with large amounts of fluorspar and barite. No restatement of the details of the geologic evidence willbe attempted here; the interested student is referred to the papers cited. Slide No. 1 shows the distribution around the world of the deposits under consideration. A principal thesis of my remarks is that there is so much similarity in all these deposits that it seems necessary for all of them to have had a similar mode of origin, whatever that may be. Variations in the shape, size and mineralogy of the orebodies give each district some individuality, but there are enough of the "typical" characteristics present in all cases to make classification in the "Mississippi Valley type" agreeableto most geologists. Thus the overall process giving rise to the ore solutions surely was the same for all in the group. Either they all have igneous affiliations or they all do not. Acknowledgment of this kinship between deposits in the various districts offers many advantages in trying to arrive at a decision as to just what the origin may have been, for the amount of guiding and limiting evidence which must fit into the hypothesis is greatly increased over that available in any one district, To a certain extent this was recognized by the authors of Special Paper 24 in treating all of the immediate Mississippi Valley areas together; by expanding the consideration to include ore deposits of this type all over the world the changes of success, i.e., arriving at the correct answer, are improved several fold. Since most of these districts are quite simple structurally, a number of hypotheses might fit the facts in any one of them, but if the facts to be met can safely be drawn from all the districts, then the explanations which will fit all the data are much less numerous. One purpose of this paper is to call attention to the field facts that have been reported from the .various areas which seem to have an important bearing on the kind of ore fluid that was responsible for the ore and on the way it circulated.

The 4500 m3 blast furnace at the Redcar Works of ESC operates or, a burden of sinter and pellets, both materials being produced within the works. The early history of the furnace was given to the AIME Ironmaking Conference in 1981(1) when the burden was 65% superfluxed minter and 33% acid pellets. While ironmaking performance was adequate, it was felt that there were advantages to be gained by the use of fluxed pellets. For example, Kobe Steel had reported (2) that the rise of 30-50% dolomite fluxed pellets had enabled them to achieve better furnace permeability, higher gas utilisation, and enhanced ore/coke ratios. It appeared probable to BSC that the use of magnesia-bearing fluxed pellets would give a burden which had compatibility of softening and melting properties, i.e., fluxed sinter and dolomite pellets would result in a thinner cohesive zone because of closer matching of softening and melting temperatures, with consequential benefits on furnace stability and efficiency.

The Montgary pegmatite is located at Bernic Lake in the southeastern Manitoba pegmatite district. 'It has a complex internal structure with several contrasting mineral assemblages. The pegmatite contains a number of potentially valuable miners including spodumene, amblygonite,. lepidolite, zinnwaidite, pollucite and beryl.. The distribution of each of these within the pegmatite is related to the internal structure and controlled by a specific mineral assemblage. Parts of the pegmatite contain a high concentration of spodumene. The pollucite occurrence is of unique character and is one of the largest known deposits of this mineral. The pegmatite is still-like in attitude with a maximum dip of about 15 degrees. Its contents with the amphibolitic wall rocks are sharp and tourmalinized. Mineral assemblages present include perthite-plagioclase-quartz-muscovite, spodumene-microcline perthite-plagioclase-quartz-muscovite, cleavelandite-lithia micas-quartz, quartz-amblygonite, albite, lepidolite, pollucite, and quartz assemblages. The occurrence and relationships of these are described and possible relationships between attitude and internal structure are discussed. Many features of the pegmatite suggest that the deposit formed by crystallization and differentiation of a pegmatitic fluid in a restricted system. These features are discussed. The nature and occurrence of the pollucite, lepidolite and albite assemblages are such, however that it is difficult to visualize them resulting from such a system. These assemblages may be of later replacement origin. The source of the, late, alkali-rich replacing solutions may be unmixing of soda and the rarer alkalis (lithium, rubidium, caesium) from earlier-formed silicates in a manner analogous to the unmixing of soda feldspar in perthites. Various aspects of this hypothesis are examined.

[Available statistics show that the demands of the American chemical industry for sodium sulphate have been increasing slightly in recent years. The supply from domestic sources, particularly in the form of byproduct salt cake from the acid manufacturers, has been tending to decease due to the growing manufacture of synthetic acid. Both hydrochloric and nitric acids are being synthesized from their elements. The natural result has been that a smaller amount of salt cake is available. Simultaneously, the expansion of the Kraft-paper industry, especially in Lie South, has brought about greater demand for sodium sulphate in that section. This demand is being met by domestic byproduct salt cake, by imported German sodium sulphate made from potash waste liquors, and by favorably situated domestic deposits of Glauber salts and tile anhydrous salt, thenardite. No shortage of natural sodium sulphate exists in the United States, but usually such deposits occur in semiarid regions far re¬moved from transportation facilities and from markets. Moreover, the major portion of the natural deposits is Glauber salt or mirabilite (Na2SO4?10H20), which must be dried or dehydrated in order to most consumer requirements. The waters of hydration represents, roughly, 55 percent of tae total weight of the crude salts and therefore has a very important influence on transportation costs. In marry instances the cost of getting even the dehydrated product to market is the deciding economic factor. Therefore, the recovery or production of anhydrous sodium sulphate from plant-waste liquors or from natural brines of suitable composition might be economically feasible.]

Kaiser Resources Ltd. operates a coal mining complex in Southeastern British Columbia. A large surface mine, a conventional underground mine, and an innovative hydraulic underground mine are presently in operation. The products of these mines are fed to the Elkview plant. This coal has to be prepared to 9. 5% ash and 6'o total moisture for export from the port of Roberts Bank near Vancouver, British Columbia to Japan at a rate of 4. 5 Mltpy. The moisture requirement for the coal product was recently increased to 8. 0% total moisture. The entire operation has been described in various publications (1), (2), (3). Details of the venture will not be repeated in this paper. In this paper we hope to describe the modifications made to the original coal preparation plant in order to satisfy market requirements for quality and quantity of coal.

The Park City District, Utah, is situated in the Wasatch Range at the intersection of the westward extension of the axis of the Uinta Range. Ore has been mined almost continuously from the first discovery in 1869 to the present day, with a total production of over 14 million tons. Sediments of Carboniferous to Triassic age have been folded into the northerly plunging Park City anticline and subsequently modified by thrust faulting, diorite and diorite porphyry intrusions, and strong east-west normal faulting during the Laramide orogeny. Younger andesitic volcanics partially cover the eastern edge of the district. The ore bodies occur as both lode and bedded replacement deposits over widely scattered localities. Near surface, high-grade silver "bonanza" ores were mined in early days from the Ontario and Daly Lodes, which occur along the east-west zone of faulting near the center of the district. Other lode or fissure deposits were found along the Mayflower and Hawkeye faults to the east and southeast. Large bedded replacement silver-lead-zinc ore bodies associated with east-west zones of fissuring, have been mined from favorable horizons in the Park City Formation in the Daly West and Judge mines. A series of long, narrow, high-grade, replacement ore bodies occur in the Silver King mine at a single horizon in the Park City Formation. Ore is currently being mined from strong bedded replacements in the Humbug Formation near the apex of the Park City anticline. Factors controlling ore deposition are: magmatic source, structural feeder systems, and favorable host rocks. Ore deposition along favorable beds is primarily a function of physical conditioning and secondarily of chemical composition.

Although systematic control of ventilating air currents in underground mines dates back to the Greek and Roman empires, quantified analysis dealing with the cost of providing airflow did not appear until about 1860 when the first fans with acceptable efficiencies became available. Initially, these were introduced to avert methane explosions initiated by shaft bottom furnaces. However, discussions arose on how much coal the steam driven fans consumed in comparison with shaft furnaces in order to produce the sane amount of airflow. Ventilation economics had arrived. In 1981/82 a project was funded by the Department of Energy and carried out at the University of California, Berkeley in order to analyze and compare alternative ventilation designs from the viewpoint of economics and systems efficiency1. This paper highlights some of the results of that study.

Full-seam mining with continuous mining machines in dirty coal beds may increase loss of coal in the washery refuse. At one mine mentioned in this report the loss of salable coal was increased sixfold. Cleaning trials were made on three samples of jig refuse in a dense-medium pilot plant to demonstrate the application of this process to the recovery of coal from waste. These tests demonstrated that coal could be separated from impurity with the same degree of sharpness obtained in treating raw coal by dense medium. However, the recovery efficiency achieved in treating refuse averaged distinctly lower than that possible with raw coal because of the greater proportion of intermediate-density material in the feed and the lower yield of clean coal.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines, at its nonmetallic Minerals Experiment Station, New Brunswick, N. J., has, for a number of rears, been investigating the commercial possibilities of treating the complex saline mineral polyhalite (K2SO4?NgSO4?2CaSO4?2H20) for the recovery of potash and magnesia. Certain proposed processes (1, 2, 3, 4)4/ yield waste liquors that contain the bulk of the magnesium and sulphate originally combined as magnesium sulphate in the polyhalite molecule. Screening during the production of high-grade lump ore for blast furnace burden, particularly from recently developed ore deposits in Australia, South America, and Africa, has resulted in large tonnages of fine iron ore. Certain owners have decided to stockpile these fines until some later date; however, others have either sold these fines "as is" for agglomeration at the steel plant or have established their own pelletizing plants to produce a premium quality agglomerate. Normally these fines consist of the higher oxides of iron and the hydrated oxides. Unfortunately, grinding these types of materials in a wet process produces a slurry that is difficult to filter to obtain the requisite moisture level for the subsequent balling and indurating operations. The purpose of this paper is to review recent developments in fine dry grinding of iron ore and to discuss the various design and operating parameters involved. Although dry grinding of raw feed and clinker has been practiced in the cement industry for many decades, its significant application to the iron ore industry has taken place within the past ten years. Even though the basic concept of dry grinding has been borrowed from the cement industry, the successful application to iron ore grinding has not taken place without some difficulties. Consequently, the application to iron ore has required the solution of several unique design and operating problems.

Brown coal production in Victoria's Latrobe Valley Region (Figure 1) continues to rise and currently stands at around 50 Mt per annum. With the exception of around 2 Mt used to produce some 700 Kt of brown coal briquettes, this coal is mined by the State Electricity Commission to fuel large thermal power stations with a total installed capacity of just over 5 000 Megawatts. The moisture content of the coal as mined typically exceeds 60 per cent, making Latrobe Valley coal a markedly low rank fuel. The lack of heating value is, however, compensated for through power station design and by the fact that ash yield is very low, usually within the range of one per cent to four per cent on a dry basis. This means that compared with most other coals, the burning of Latrobe Valley brown coal produces relatively small quantities of waste products and discharges a minimal level of pollutants into the atmosphere. Even so, the inherent quality of Latrobe Valley coal does vary significantly from one area to another (Gloe, 1991; Barton et al, 1992) both on a local and a regional scale. Such variations need to be recognised and understood in order to not only realise efficiency gains in existing power stations but to properly assess resource potential for future utilisation and the application of new technologies. The principal aim of this paper is not to describe coal quality variation in detail or to speculate on the nature of and reasons for such variation. Rather, it is to simply underscore that significant differences do occur and that this is clearly a factor which needs to be considered in any evaluation of Latrobe Valley brown coal as a resource for the future.
