IT has given me great pleasure to read, in the papers recently pub lished by this Society, the discussions on the subject of Technical Education, which were developed at the joint meeting held at the Franklin Institute in June, 1876; and since it was impossible for me to be present, I desire to improve this my first opportunity of adding the weight of my testimony and experience to what has been so ably presented by others. It is a subject about which the people need to be kept agitated, that their views may expand with the demands made for a higher and more thorough education. It is the public at large, the capitalist, the manufacturer, and the laborer, who are to be benefited more or less by this elevation of the standard of our professional schools, and it is but just, therefore, that the schools should look to them for the means with which to accomplish so de sirable an object. It is no doubt to the interest of a metallurgist to employ a skilled laborer who will prevent waste by properly proportioning his ma terials ; by regulating the supplies of air and fuel; by arranging his plant in the most economical manner, arid by disposing of his products to the greatest advantage. The engineer is benefited by selecting for an assistant a person able to determine the values of his factors of safety for the same materials in different forms and positions, avoiding expensive suits for damages and cost of reconsiruction; he should be able to so locate a road as best to fulfil the requirements of a through traffic, arid yet develop local industries. But I need not multiply instances to show what all will readily concede, viz.: the advantages of a theoretical education ; that was fully demonstrated at the previous special meeting, but it is still an open question whether the practical instruction should precede, accompany, or follow the theory.

Walter Renton Ingalls recently gave a very interesting talk before the student mining society of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In it he showed the present status of mining as he sees it. In the talk he explained that, while discoveries of great mining districts are still pssible, they are being made less and less often; that the great mining companies, although there are large numbers of mines offered for sale, are finding it less and less possible to find new mines that are up to the standard of richness that they wish for purchase. The natural conclusion is that better, cheaper, and more efficient methods of mining, concentrating, and smelting are needed if the lower-grade mines are to be worked at a profit. This is true also if the high-grade mines are to yield their greatest profit. This paper deals only with the concentrating or ore-dressing problem, and gives some thoughts which point towards greater profit. In a paper on The Development of Hindered-Settling Apparatus the writer showed that there were two main lines of work that would lead to greater saving, lower tailing assay, and, therefore, greater profit. The first is the recrushing of middling or tailing products for the saving of the contained values. This is well understood and largely carried out in existing mills. The second is the saving of fine free mineral at the first opportunity. This is a matter less well understood in the mills, and to dwell upon this the present paper is written. The writer is himself convinced and hopes to convince the reader that, for obtaining the above result, not only is better classification needed, but also more classification; that is, there should be more spigots or pockets to the classifier. His attention was recently called to a small mill which had a three-pocket cone classifier fed with from 2 to 0 mm. stuff, supplying feed to four Wilfley tables. The first spigot had about all the

"The Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., has conducted a series of experiments an air measurement in fan-pipe installa¬tions in a Butte mine during the fall and winter of 1922-3. The chief purpose was to determine the friction factors for different types and sizes 3f fan piping, but much attention was devoted to methods of air measurement, not only with respect to the methods used for friction factor tests, but also to com¬parison with other methods.The air flow was measured simultaneously at two points 380.6 feet apart in six different fan-pipe installations, each over 500 feet in overall length, in a rock cross cut adjacent to an air shaft,The air pressure was regulated by two sinoco multivane fans, driven by 7 ½ h.p. motors, the fans being connected in tandem so that one discharged into the intake of the other through a short connector and the latter discharged into the line through a straight connection equipped with a honeycomb of 4-inch squares or S radial vanes to prevent spiral flow of air, At each point where it was desired to measure the air flow, measuring sections equipped with piezometer rings pierced for easy insertion of pitot tubes, thermometers, etc. Piezometer static pressures were used in all the tests as standard, and dynamic or total pressures only were obtained with the pitot tubes, except for purposes of comparison.The tubes had special guide blocks, designed especially for underground work. To insure greater accuracy two tubes were used simultaneously, in order to obtain the velocity pressure at the center of the section simultaneously with that nearer the circumference, so that the mean velocity would be determined as accurately as possible. The tubes were held in proper place by means of flat guide boards. Velocity pressures were measured in manometers."

The following article covers the history of a metallurgical campaign, commenced in March, 1905, at the mines of the Socorro Bold Co., in the so-called desert region of Yuma county, Arizona. The results obtained were simply a function of necessity, as will be seen from the description of the local economic conditions and the character of the ores treated. The mines and mill of the Socorro Gold Co. are located near the small village of Harrisburg, about 60 miles from Congress Junction, Ariz., which, at the time this work was undertaken, was the nearest railroad station, and from which all supplies were brought by wagon through the desert, at a cost varying from $10 to $15 per ton in addition to the railroad freights. Wood, the only available fuel, cost $7 per cord. Water for all purposes was pumped to the plant from a well in the valley about 4 miles away. Under the Arizona law, a working-shift is 8 hr. Wages were $6 per day for foremen and mill-men, $4 per day for blacksmiths and engineers, $3.50 per day for miners, and $3 per day for shovelers and trammers. The ore consisted of quartz, in which, above the 250-ft. level, the iron-minerale were largely oxidized and some free gold was visible; below that level few traces of oxidation occurred, and pyrite constituted the principal mineralizer in the quartz, together with occasional pockets of galena and a few eccentric specks of covellite. The 20-stamp mill was equipped with plates for amalgamation, and three Standard tables for concentration. The tails from the tables mere elevated by a centrifugal pump to a launder, by which they were conveyed to a 60-ton cyanide-mill for further treatment. The cyanide-mill was erected at so great a distance from the stamp-mill that a separate crew of workers and a separate power-plant were necessary. MINE hoisting ropes can be loaded to capacity only when the strength of each component is exactly known. Characteristic curves provide this information. When load and rate of acceleration are specified for an individual rope, the characteristic curve assumes a predetermined shape. The factor of safety, is the value drived by dividing the breaking strength of the rope by the total stress on the rope where it goes over the sheave wheel. Total stress is made up of the weight of skip and cage, weight of ore, weight of rope between sheave and rope clevise or attachment, friction load, and acceleration force. Bending stresses are neglected in this discussion, as sheaves and drum di- ameters are assumed to be large enough to reduce these stresses to a negligible value. Fig. 1 gives a family of characteristic curves for 13/8-in. improved plow steel hoisting ropes of 6 x 19 or 6x21 construction with hemp core. The curves will hold for all rope sizes of this specified quality when they are subjected to an acceleration rate of 1.608 ft per sec2. As acceleration rates of most deep shaft hoists are close to this value, this family of curves is presented as a standard. Deviation is slight for other rope sizes. Note that for 0, which is the most important, the deviation is within the width of the line on the graph. In a comparison of values for ropes of 5/8-in. and 21/4-in. diam the deviation ranges from a maximum 1.2 pct at 0 ft to 0.6 of 1 pct at 5000 ft. The value of 5.55 is the same for all ropes at 2500 ft. The tabulated columns to the left of the curves are values of total connected load for each size of rope from 5/8-in. to 21/4-in. diam inclusive. With each of these connected loads the safety factor characteristic curve for the rope will be as indicated.

THE sampling and estimating of, the orebodies in the mines of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., at Butte, have been made a part of the work of the geological department. The wisdom of this assignment is apparent, considering the organization of that department, the nature of, its records, and the scope of its regular work. In the first place, the district is divided into units of two or three mines each and a geologist is assigned to each group. His trips to all the working places are frequent and he follows the mining operations closely. His notes are graphic and detailed. In the office, he posts his notes on the standard maps and sections and on special maps for correlation purposes. With the approval of the chief or assistant chief geologist, he recommends development work underground and watches its progress. This gives the geological department a precise knowledge of the character of each orebody. Sampling is done by one or two samplers at each mine working under a chief sampler stationed in the geological office. The chief sampler has access to all the office maps and is in frequent consultation with the geologists; his instructions to the samplers are issued with the approval of the chief or assistant chief geologist. Not only is it important that the geologic information be used to direct the sampling but the reports of the samplers and the records kept by their chief are useful to the geologist, who needs them in his work of I estimating ore reserves and deciding on recommendations for development work. The sampler, moreover, is at the mine every day and makes a daily report, which keeps the geologist in close touch with 'the progress of development work. The sampler is attached to the mine office and thus comes under the jurisdiction of the operating department. In fact, any special orders prepared by the chief sampler are submitted to the general superintendent, after approval by the geological department. The mine foreman may.

"Biological cementation of the Mandena heavy mineral sand deposit in Madagascar was causing difficulty in dredge mining and hence in planning and control of production rates. An investigation was initiated to better evaluate the geotechnical properties of the orebody by defining the distribution and geotechnical properties of the cemented strata, in order to generate a site-specific geotechnical model for the deposit. The geotechnical characterization was developed by an integrated approach using several ground investigation techniques such as piezocone (CPTu) testing, geotechnical drilling, standard penetration testing (SPT), as well as laboratory testing. The final outcomes of the investigation included a 3D geotechnical model showing the distribution and extent of the cemented areas, as well as the typical geotechnical parameter ranges associated with each of the defined geotechnical units. The interpretations developed were incorporated into the mine and production planning to ultimately optimize operational planning and control.IntroductionQIT Madagascar Minerals (QMM) is a heavy mineral sand mining operation at Mandena, near Fort Dauphin in Madagascar. During the final planning and commissioning stages of the project, the need to fully characterize the unusual geotechnical conditions was identified and a geotechnical investigation became necessary.Nature of the problemDuring the commissioning phase it was found that mining production was being hampered by biologically cemented/indurated layers encountered within the sands. Closer inspection of the indurated horizons in the dredging face revealed that these layers contain a high loading of bacteria and fungi. It appears that the bacteria produce an extracellular (outside the cell) polysaccharide (i.e. sugar and carbon salts), which form a gelling biofilm to trap nutrients. There are a number of different bacteria. The fungi, on the other hand, produce a network of fibrous strands that bind the sand grains together. Thus both bacteria and fungi probably contribute to the ‘apparent cohesive’ strength or binding of the indurated sand (Lynn, 2008)."

INTRODUCTION Traditionally mineral processing equipment has been procured based on (equipment) specifications prepared by the engineers. As newer materials of construction are being used for equipment manufacture and plant control systems become more sophisticated, the need for thorough and detailed specifications is greater than ever. For example, it is not uncommon to find plants looking at grinding circuits consisting of semiautogenous mills with variable speed, gearless, drives of large horsepower. Technical specifications for the mill, wrap- around motor and control system must, therefore, be carefully prepared to ensure that the respective equipment supplied by vendors meets overall grinding needs. Various engineering and design companies have expended considerable time and effort in developing the specification format. Equipment manufacturers have also given significant effort to developing data sheets aimed at collecting information regarding not only the duty of the equipment, but also the conditions under which it will be operated. As engineers moved from one company to another, the specification format became cross-fertilized and further developed. As a result, specifications on file with various engineers have improved considerably over a period of time. Equipment specifications from earlier projects are commonly used as a basis for tailoring new ones. To keep equipment specifications short, general technical considerations are often compiled as separate specifications. For example, general considerations applicable to the design, manufacture and supply of the mechanical equipment are consolidated under "Standard Requirements for Mechanical Equipment” and included along with that specified for purchase. As the economic feasibility of the project has been established during earlier studies, purchase-related activities can be initiated following completion of the specifications. Procurement itself is a major activity, however, in this chapter only those activities directly related to the purchase of equipment will be discussed. Bacterial degasification of methane and conventional methane drainage for generation of power have become accepted practice. Comparative economies of both the techniques have been described. Authors have discussed an alternative technique, involving complete methane biocycle. The first stage of the entire process involves gasification of coal using a consortia of bacteria to generate methane. The generated methane has been proposed to be pumped,as in conventional methane drainage. Technique described is basically similar to underground coal gasification, with the difference that in place of coal combustion, degradation of coal to lower molecular weight compounds by one set of bacteria and then methanogenesis by methanogens, producing methane have been described. Brief account of communities of bacteria that may be employed have been dealt with. Three arguments in favour of proposed technology as an alternative to conventional coal mining are: 1.Total elimination of hazardous operation. 2.Availability of power plants based on methane drainage, assuring comparative economies. 3.Possibility of utilisation of fuel cell technology for power generation giving higher efficiency. All the three phases of complete blocycle viz (1) methane generation from coal (ii) conversion of methane to hydrogen and oxygen (iii) conversion of products so obtained to methane, thereby completing the cycle have been discussed. INTRODUCTION Drainage of methane by conventional pumping process (Boxho,et.al.,1980) not only is helpful in maintaining safe extraction of coal, but with utilisation of extracted gas for power generation, also helps in over all economy of coal mining. This is gradually becoming standard practice for mining of coal in highly gassy mines. An alternative technique (Thakur et. al., 1991) of bacterial degasification of coal seams is also gradually gaining ground. The bye products of this process that is carbondioxide and water, do not contribute towards economy of coal extraction process. However the technique has its own advantage particularly in goaf area for avoiding fire hazard and drainage of methane from coal seams prior to initiation of mining operation. Either of these techniques could be applied in specific situations with success.

As the outcrop mines in the West developed into underground operations, systems of ground sup- port were gradually evolved. In the early coal mines there was little need for support except near the dirt line in portals, where stone masonry was common. Where the top was shaley or broken, native pine props with light cross bars and legs furnished enough support even in Utah's 25-ft coal seams. As depth of workings increased, roofs and backs of the same general nature as those near the surface became more and more unstable and required more and more support. Some coal airways show this tendency very clearly. From the surface down the same type of roof shows deterioration which an experienced eye can translate into a measure of depth under surface rather than change in rock characteristics. Rock bolts, developed by various companies and by the U. S. Bureau of Mines, have become an effective substitute for timber in sections of some metal and nonmetal mines formerly requiring excessive timber support, and further use of war surplus landing mats, chain link fencing, and a new punched channel developed by one of the steel companies has enabled other mines to operate deposits where costs of timber and lack of clearance for timber support would have prohibited mining. The block caving mines have made extensive use of reinforced concrete underground to achieve similar ends under difficult conditions. Steel sets are standard in many Bureau of Reclamation projects, although these are usually covered in with concrete to make the permanent structures the Bureau's reclamation projects require. But the use of steel in mining operations is limited and has been confined principally to the iron ore mines of Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. Some mines have installed used rail as posts, caps, and crossbars, but a rail section is not suited for load carrying, and used rails are generally brittle, having a tendency to fail without warning when overloaded.

Many articles on the physical properties of fire damp have appeared in the Transactions and elsewhere but practically nothing has been written in regard to its occurrence or fluctuation in quantity in an ordinary mine. After the Monongah explosion in 1907, with the loss of 361 lives, the Consolidation Coal Co. sought a method by which such catastrophes could be prevented. While the cause of this particular explosion was attributed to coal dust, some of those acquainted with the mine thought that fire damp was involved, if it was not the initial cause. So the literature on the subject was studied and mines where similar conditions prevailed in this country and Europe, were visited, with the view of establishing some system by which gas could be more easily detected and controlled. The results of this study were disappointing for no method was found other than the time-honored fire boss with his safety lamp, with some variations in the rules and regulations governing his inspections and reports. Duties of the Fire Boss Pending the development of a better method, it was decided to standardize and perfect the duties of the fire boss and the reports based on his observations. Those who were then in service were closely examined, various lamps were experimented with and the lamps and individuals tested under known conditions. It was found that a fire boss could tell whether gas was present but his estimate of quantity was not even an approximation; therefore, while the services of fire bosses were indispen-sible there was need of additional information by which the quantity of gas could be estimated with some precision in order to determine its variation from time to time. Chemical Process for Determination of Methane After considering all methods known at that time a chemical process was adopted. When the cyanide process came into general use, late in the nineteenth century, chlorination was quickly supplanted, but amalgamation yielded place more slowly, being still the major process at many plants, where it is followed by cyanidation of the tailings. The research work of the Denny brothers in South Africa' was probably the most important contribution of its time to the metallurgy of gold. By grading analyses of mill products, they pointed to the necessity of fine grinding to accomplish maximum extraction by cyanide. The work here described is merely an extension of the Dennys' method. Developing the fine-grinding principle, the steps of "crushing in solution" and of "all-sliming" were logical sequels, though both had been attempted early in the history of the cyanide process. Crushing in solution introduced certain complications in amalgamation; when "all-sliming " was adopted it was observed that the omission of amalgamation did not materially affect the total recovery. Thus the field of the older process has become much restricted, being at present confined to ores which, yielding freely to amalgamation, either are too low in grade to show an economic advantage in "all-sliming," or present chemical or other difficulties making the use of cyanide solution unadvisable during the crushing and preparation of the ore. South African ores are typical of the former class; Homestake ores are of both classes, but even in these instances the amalgamation work is being curtailed and greater burdens thrown on the cyanide plants. It is obvious that the time required for the dissolution of gold depends on the size of its particles. In an effort to determine the critical size, the following laboratory method was evolved. A standard amalgamation test2 had already been established, which involves the agitation of about 100 gm. of ore with 20 gm. of pure mercury, the latter then being separated and its gold contents determined. This method was applied directly to certain mill products with interesting results, a few of which may be noted here. The column "Free Gold" gives the value per ton thus amalgamated, as against the " Total Gold " determined by fire assay.

DuRing the year 1939 the program of the California Arabian Standard Oil Co. in eastern Saudi Arabia consisted of drilling wells to increase the production of Dammam Dome. (This structure is also sometimes referred to as Dhahran Dome.) In addition, in other areas of the concession, wildcat wells are being drilled on geologically favorable structures. In the early wells drilled at Dhahran, production was at a depth of 2000 to 2200 ft. Since discovery of the "Arab zone" below 4300 ft., all of the later wells have been drilled to the deeper productive members. At present there are at Dhahran fivc wells in various stages of drilling or completion. In addition, 15 wells previously were drilled to the upper or lower zones. Although some of the early locations are exceptions, in general the spacing of the wells is at 3000 feet. Prospect testing consisted in drilling one well at Abu Hadriya and one at Ma'agala, about 100 miles northwest and 120 miles west of Dhahran. The first had attained a depth of 8655 ft. without encountering the main Darnmam productive zone, while the second was at a depth of 1372 ft. Both of these wildcat wells are on large dome structures. Production.—During the year 3,933,903 bbl. of approximately 35" gravity oil was produced, all from flowing wells. A part of this production was shipped in barges to the refinery at Bahrein. In early May a 40-mile 10-in. pipe line was completed to the deep-water terminal at Ras Tanura. The ceremony of first opening the valve for flow of oil into an ocean tanker was performed by King Abdulaziz Ibn Saud. Since that time tanker shipments have continued, both to Bahrein and to world markets. Only sufficient gas for camp purposes has been produced. Equipment.—A stabilization plant has been completed at Dhahran and plans have been made for a refinery at Ras Tanura. A modern camp is being built including power plant, central air-conditioning plant, radio station, employees' club and housing facilities for both married and single employees. Both the offices and dwellings are being air-conditioned. There is a hospital, with medical staff and nurses, providing facilities for both Saudi Arabs and Americans.

By taking advantage of the fundamental difference between screening and classification—namely, that specific gravity has no effect on screening but is one of the important factors in classification—a combination of the two may be used as a process of mineral concentration. Although this fact is not new, so far as is known it has had little or no commercial application. The scheme is not presented now as a process for producing finished products but rather as a preliminary operation rejecting part of the barren material from an ore before it is subjected to more costly treatment. That is largely the function of the new heavy-media concentration processes that have been widely accepted. Original installation costs for the present sink-float processes are relatively high, however, which confines their use to operations where large tonnages are handled. Sink-float has been successful on only the relatively coarse (approximately plus 10-mesh) portion of an ore, and it is in this same range that classification screening can function most satisfactorily. Theoretically, there is no upper limit to the size of particles that can be handled in a sink-float operation, but the degree of liberation in the very large pieces usually limits this. With classification screening, particles from % to % in. would be the largest that could be handled, but the lower range could be extended somewhat below 10 mesh. In order to take full advantage of the difference in specific gravities of the minerals being separated, sorting in the classifier should be under as extreme hindered-settling conditions as possible. Laboratory tests have been made on a galena ore and on an artificial mixture of quartz and magnesite to determine the separations that may be expected. Although more than one scheme may be followed, in these tests the separations were made by cutting the underflow from the classifier as a concentrate and then screening the overflow. The screen oversize was rejected as a tailing. Classification was done in a hindered-settling teeter column and screening was done by hand, using the standard 4 2 series. The accompanying flowsheet gives the testing procedure followed.

In order to systematically study the size effect on the shear strength of rock joints, this study used the computer-aided-manufacturing system to reproduce the artificial rock joints for saw-toothed joints, Barton's standard joint profiles of JRC = 4~6 and 18~20, and natural rock joint profiles. We divided, enlarged, reduced, and assembled these joint profiles to obtain joint specimens of various sizes ranging from 75 mm to 300 mm in length. The shear strengths of these joint specimens were tested under different normal stresses using a direct shear test apparatus. The surface conditions of the joints at failure were also examined. The size and geometry effects on the shear strengths of these joints of various sizes and configurations were evaluated based on the test results. Nach den Untersuchungsergebnissen werden die Maßstabs- und Geometriewirkung auf die Scherfestigkeit dieser Trennflächen verschiedener Größen und Konfigurationen ausgewertet. Pour étudier systématiquement l’effet de la dimension des fractures des roches sur leur résistance au cisaillement un système de creation de fractures artificielles à l’ordinateur a été employé. Des fractures artificielles triangulaires, profils de fractures de Barton avec JRC = 4~6 et 18~20, et profils de fractures naturelles ont été reproduits. Les profils des fractures ont été arrangés de manière à obtenir des échantillons de longueur entre 75 et 300 mm. Une boîte de cisaillement a été utilisée pour étudier la résistance des fractures au cisaillement, sous plusieurs conditions de contraintes normales. Les conditions superficielles des fractures après rupture ont été étudiées. Les résultats de ces essais, effectués sur plusieurs échantillons de dimensions et configurations variées, ont contribué à établir l’influence des dimensions et de la géométrie des fractures sur leur résistance au cisaillement.

BY taking advantage of the fundamental difference between screening and classification-namely, that specific gravity has no effect on screening but is one of the important factors in classification-a combination of the two may be used as a process of mineral concentration. Although this fact is not new, so far as is known it has had little or no commercial application. The scheme is not presented now as a process for producing finished products but rather as a preliminary operation rejecting part of the barren material from an ore before it is subjected to more costly treatment. That is largely the function of the new heavy-media concentration processes that have been widely accepted. Original installation costs for the present sink-float processes are relatively high, however, which confines their use to operations where large tonnages are handled. Sink-float has been successful on only the relatively coarse (approximately plus 10-mesh) portion of an ore, and it is in this same range that classification screening can function most satisfactorily. Theoretically, there is no upper limit to the size of particles that can be handled in a sink-float operation, but the degree of liberation in the very large pieces usually limits this. With classification screening, particles from 3/8 to 1/2 in. would be the largest that could be handled, but the lower range could be extended somewhat below 10 mesh. In order to take full advantage of the difference in specific gravities of the minerals being separated, sorting in the classifier should be under as extreme hindered-settling conditions as possible. Laboratory tests have been made on a galena ore and on an artificial mixture of quartz and magnesite to determine the separations that may be expected. Although more than one scheme may be followed, in these tests the separations were made by cutting the underflow from the classifier as a concentrate and then screening the overflow. The screen oversize was rejected as a tailing. Classification was done in a hindered-settling teeter column and screening was done by hand, using the standard [v2]series. This shaft, located in the northern anthracite coal-field about 2300 feet southwest from the court-house at Wilkes-Barre, in the County of Luzerne, Pa., is the property of the Lehigh & WilkesBarre Coal Company. The sinking and cribbing to the solid rock (see isometrical view on Plate IX) was conducted by Mr. W. W. Kenrick. Dimensions of the earthwork to the foundation of the cribbing, 51' 2" long, 17' 4" wide, 31' deep. Total amount of excavation in cubic yards, 998.5. Dimensions within the permanent cribbing, 45' 4" long, 11' 16" wide, 31' deep, divided into six parts by buttons 8" x 12", each division, 7' x 11' 6". Permanent cribbing 12" x 12"; temporary cribbing 8" x 10" ; backing, 3" thick ; clay puddle to exclude surface water, 12" thick; conductors, 8" x 5"; lining, 1" thick from top to bottom of the shaft. In the latter part of the year 1871, Mr. H. Murray & Son contracted with the company for the continuation of the work at the rate of four hundred dollars per yard in depth, to a point 100 feet below the Hillman seam of coal; for the succeeding 100 feet the price to be increased twenty-five dollars per yard, and so on until the bottom rock of the Baltimore seam of coal was found. The size of the shaft within the cribbing timbers is 45 feet 4 inches by 11 feet 6 inches, having six divisions of equal dimensions, 7 feet by 11 feet 6 inches, giving room for what is known as the "standard diamond " car, whose capacity when level full is 100 cubic feet, but when loaded by the miner 4 inches above the top contains 112 cubic feet." Two divisions of this shaft are intended for hoisting coal from the Hillman seam, two from the Baltimore seam, one for ventilation, and one for pumps. The works were planned for two pairs of direct-acting, high-pressure engines, twenty-four boilers, and for an estimated output of 2500 tons of coal per day from the two seams.

Pumping water for dewatering and water supply is a major component of electricity consumption at mining operations and hence is a significant contributor of greenhouse gas emissions. Pump systems at a typical mine site can be broadly split between above ground centrifugal pumps (generally used for water transfer) and submersible borehole pumps (generally for dewatering and/or water supply). In contrast to above ground pumps, submersible borehole pumps can be subjected to varying duty points (total pumping head and flow requirements) as a result of changing bore water levels and yields, particularly in mine dewatering bores. Typically, much higher pumping rates are required at the commencement of dewatering to remove groundwater storage and to intercept sufficient groundwater throughflow to achieve target drawdowns. Once target drawdown levels are reached it often only requires much lower pumping rates to maintain target drawdowns. Pumps sized to remove the large initial volumes of stored groundwater often end up too large for the lower flow rate required for æmaintenance pumpingÆ. This often results in pumps operating inefficiently, a problem which can be made worse when pumps are throttled to reduce the pump output to better match the reduced bore yield. Current standard operating practice places little emphasis on the electricity consumed by pumps, with the focus often being on minimising capital expenditure (æIf it ainÆt broke donÆt fix itÆ). Submersible pumps can have extended service lives of ten to 20+ years. However as the capital cost of a pump typically represents only five per cent of the life cycle cost, the vast majority of the life cycle cost is energy usage.Through the implementation of a regular review of the operation of borehole pumps, significant reductions in electricity use and associated greenhouse gas emissions can be achieved without impacting the dewatering schedule. In most cases, the capital cost of replacing pumps is more than offset by savings in operating costs. These potential savings become even more significant when considering proposed future carbon tax levees.This paper presents examples of the opportunities for significant reductions in energy, greenhouse gas emissions and overall costs that can be achieved for a range of dewatering scenarios.

Petroleum operations in Bolivia are still limited to those of the subsidiaries of the Standard Oil Co. of New Jersey. Development work is being carried on at Sanandita and at Bermejo and testing operations in the north. Five wells have been completed at Sanandita. Wells 1 and 2 are producers, 3 and 5, which are north of 1 and 2, are poor wells, and well 4, to the south, was dry. In the Bermejo field, well 5 has just been completed. No information as to the production is obtainable. In the north one string was operated at each of the following locations: Machareti, Camatindi and Camiri. The well completed at Machareti during the year was a failure. The result of the others is not known. It is reported on good authority that a pipe line will be completed in 1931 to connect the Sanandita field with the Lomitas field in the Argentine. This will place Bolivia among the ranks of the producing countries of South America for the first time. This development indicates that some arrangement has been arrived at with the Argentine Government for the importation of Bolivian oil. During 1930 the Bolivian Government declared in effect the new Petroleum Law which had been expected for such a long time. One of the first acts of the military junta, which rose to power through a coup d'état, was to cancel this law, so that Bolivian oil operations are still under the old law of 1921. One new local company was formed to exploit 1,500,000 hectares near the town of Cochabamba. The Bolivia Concessions, Ltd., which had a concession permitting the selection of 17,000,000 acres in eastern Bolivia, is reported to have failed in 1930 and is now being liquidated. Chile During 1930 the Chilean Government entered into a contract with an individual to explore in five distinct zones of the Republic. According to the contract, geologists must be at work there by May 1 of this year and a well must be started by the end of 1931. If the operations are
