THE Geophysics Education Committee has devoted several years to a consideration of the problem of training geophysicists. Past reports have dealt largely with fact finding and with the discussion of particular aspects of geophysical education. In the present report it is proposed to review the subject more comprehensively. This involves the question of what educational qualifications the geophysicist of the highest professional standards should possess, and the related question of what changes must be effected in existing educational institutions in order that prospective professional geophysicists may obtain instruction of the desired quality. The type of geophysicist here contemplated is one familiar with what is known already in the several branches of earth physics, and capable not only of following contemporary progress in any of these branches, but of contributing to that progress in a research capacity. Geophysics in its broadest sense, as has been emphasized repeatedly by this Committee, is the study of the physics of the earth and of terrestrial processes. This includes both the static and the dynamic characteristics of the gaseous, the liquid, and the solid portions of the earth, as well as its gravitational, thermal, and magnetic and electrical manifestations. Some branches of earth physics have been cultivated but slightly; others have reached an advanced state of development. Those branches whose development is sufficient to warrant explicit recognition in the form of organized Sections of the American Geophysical Union are: geodesy, seismology, tectonophysics, and volcanology, dealing with the rock constituents of the earth; oceanography and hydrology with the aqueous constituents; meteorology with the atmospheric constituents; and terrestrial electricity and magnetism with the electromagnetic manifestations. At present, instruction on the professional level in any of these branches of earth physics can be obtained in but few universities in North America. In most institutions where such instruction is undertaken different subjects are given in different and independent departments. Geodesy and hydrology are taught, if at all, as a part of civil engineering. The underground coal mining industry in Australia has, in the last 30 years, undergone a revolution in production methods, techniques and results probably unparalleled elsewhere in the world. It can lay claim not only to leading the fight against pneumoconiosis and setting high safety standards generally, but has at the same time recorded comparatively high rates of increase in output per man shift. The latter has been achieved as a result of progressively matching the latest in production and underground transportation equipment with significant changes in seam development and extraction techniques and the introduction of stress-relieving extraction methods unique to the world scene. However, the seam recovery factor is still too low. Apart from the overall objectives of maximising production and commercial returns with the greatest safety, there must be a concentration towards maximising seam recovery, particularly in high seams. The search will continue for systems which are more completely continuous mining operations than the present stop-go operations, with longwall having long term potential in this regard, but as yet not sufficiently developed to engender confidence for its more general use. Techniques developed in the last 10 years make the development and extraction of deeper seams, perhaps to 2500 feet or more, feasible with continuous miners as well as longwall. The future will see a greater use of continuous shifts at mines, larger mines with more sophisticated management organisation, extensible belts at the face, better systems of immediate roof support at the face, remote operation of face equipment, greater use of roof bolts and the longer roof cables. With commercial confidence in coal mining now virtually assured to at least the turn of the century, the stage is set for heavy capital development in the industry which will undoubtedly include major research into the whole area of mining methods and equipment. We must ensure that our contribution to such research equitably matches other coal producing countries.

FEW whose good fortune it has been to gaze on the Utah Copper mine but will agree that it is one of the two or three most magnificent man-made spectacles in the world. Skyscrapered Manhattan Island perhaps is more inspiring; but there the effect is obtained by aggregating a thousand separate units. The Utah mine is a single thing- the biggest thing that men have made. By the end of 1931 there had been moved at Utah 222,000,000 cu. yd. of material, including ore and the waste rock that overlay it. This figure will be increased at an average rate of nearly 20,000,000 yd. per year. Excavations for the Panama Canal are estimated at 232,300,000 cu. yd., but the Canal is 50 miles long, and it is impossible to obtain a comprehensive view of the whole project at one time. The spectator, on the other hand, need only walk part way up the east slope of Bingham Canyon to see unfolded before him the whole panorama of the great copper mine. In the foreground is a huge pit bottomed for the time being 100 ft. below the normal floor of the canyon, which also is the elevation of the main railroad yard. Here from 500 to 800 standard steel railway cars, each of 80-ton capacity, are assembled daily to carry the ore to the concentrators. But the main part of the mine and that from which ore is now coming lies above this level. As can be seen in the accompanying photograph, a series of terraces or benches reaches to the top of the mountain that projects between the main branch of Bingham Canyon and Carr Fork. When the United States Government started buying gold at varying prices per ounce, set by the President and the Treasury Department, the gold miner found himself facing new conditions, as gold became a commodity with a fluctuating market price. While it was self-evident that the miner was to receive more for his gold than the old established price of $20.67 per ounce, there was an element of uncertainty, which made it difficult, and perhaps dangerous, to decide to invest his time and money to produce gold, especially if the profit would represent only the difference between $20.67 an ounce and the new price as set from day to day by the Government. When, however, on Jan. 30, 1934, the United States went off the gold standard, the price of newly mined gold being rather definitely set at $35 per ounce, with some assurance that the price would be maintained at or near this figure for a long time to come, the gold miner was justified in revaluing his property on the basis of the new price, and the prospector was offered inducement to spend his time and energies hunting for new mines, or going back to old locations previously abandoned as of doubtful value. It is interesting to see what this new price means to the producer of newly mined gold, and how much of the increase is passed on to the producer. It will be found that, as with the base metals, the nearer he can get to producing a finished product himself the greater his reward will be; the net returns for bullion being necessarily higher than for the same amount of gold shipped in concentrates to the smelter. Bullion can be shipped to the United States mints or Government assay offices under the following terms and conditions. An affidavit must accompany the shipment, stating, among other things: 1. The source of the gold; whether ore, tailings or placer. 2. The tons of ore, tailings or cubic yards of gravel from which the shipment was recovered.

"One of the thrust areas for the Global Nuclear Energy Partnership (GNEP) program is the development of actinide bearing fuels for transmutation in a fast reactor. Mixed Oxide (MOX) fuel has an extensive fast reactor irradiation history and thus is being considered for use as a baseline composition from which minor actinides (MA) can be incorporated for use as a transmutation fuel. This study involves characterization of precursor powders and pellets to be inserted into the Advanced Test Reactor in Idaho. These pellets will have three compositions: one standard MOX composition, (U80Pu20)O1.98, and two compositions of MA-MOX with oxygen to metal ratios (O/M) of (U75Pu20Am3Np2)O1.98 and (U75Pu20Am3Np2)O1.95. The precursor powders, which consisted of, highly enriched uranium oxide, HEUO2, depleted uranium oxide, DUO2, neptunium oxide, NpO2, americium oxide, AmO2, and plutonium oxide, PuO2, were characterized using a field emission gun scanning electron microscope (FEG-SEM) for particle morphology, size, and size distribution prior to pellet production.IntroductionThe Global Nuclear Energy Partnership (GNEP) was created in order for “fuel-cycle supplier” nations to provide assured supplies of nuclear fuel to “fuel-cycle customer” nations. The customer nations would utilize the fuel for electricity generation and subsequently return it to the supplier nation after it is spent. This spent fuel would then be reprocessed by the supplier nation in order to recycle the actinide constituents, mainly uranium and plutonium, in advanced nuclear power reactors, and thus reducing waste volumes [1, 2]. Nuclear materials would also be strictly controlled through the International Atomic Energy Agency. One of the thrust areas for the GNEP program is the development of these actinide bearing fuels for transmutation in a fast reactor under the U.S. Advanced Fuel Cycle Initiative (AFCI) in order to transmute long-lived transuranic actinide isotopes into shorter-lived fission products [3]."

"An Expert System has been implemented to assist operators in applying knowledge about froth conditions in the control of the flotation circuit at Highland Valley Copper. For some time, the personnel at Highland Valley Copper have recognized that froth type is a useful indicator of good operating conditions. However, the operating strategy based on froth type recognition is an ad-hoc skill in which different operators use a variety of terms, features and procedures to identify and solve problems. The first phase of this project developed an on-line consultative system to advise and tutor so that the diffuse expertise could be rationalized and consolidated into a standardized format.The second phase has brought this knowledge into a real-time environment to advise the operators on the floor in identifying froth types and troubleshooting corrective action. This paper describes the steps taken to acquire the knowledge, to design the required system features and to implement the real-time version of this system.INTRODUCTIONThe use of expert systems in the mineral industry has been gaining popularity in recent years. Minnova Inc, Les Mines Selbaie, Wabush Mines, Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan are just a few examples of Canadian mining companies that use expert systems to monitor or control their plants. Applications in the field of flotation include Brenda Mines (Edwards, 1992), Mt Isa Mines Ltd (Lacouture et al, 1991), Outokumpu (Karhu, 1989) and Kidd Creek (Burrows et al., 1989).Expert systems are defined as ""computer systems that apply reasoning methodologies on knowledge in a specific domain in order to render advice or recommendations much like a human expert"" (Turban, 1988). The main areas of application are diagnosis, training, process monitoring and control, and design. There are basically two main types of expert systems: Consultative systems, which are off-line applications in diagnosis and design, and on-line realtime systems, used for supervisory process control and real-time advising."

It is rather gratifying that in the field of the manufacture of refractories, in which, as a whole, foreign practice has surpassed us, the United States stands pre-eminent in the making of silica brick. In some instances European manufacturers have refused point-blank to credit the possibility of making to such specifications as are Common with us, until the actual completed shapes were shipped for inspection. But both the manufacturer and consumer in foreign lands are now frankly learning from us, and benefiting by our advanced practice in this field, as is evidenced by the orders placed here and the efforts put forth abroad to come up to the standard of American-made material. In no metallurgical operation has the employment of silica brick spread with such leaps and bounds as in the building of plants for the carbonization of coal, particularly in the byproduct coke oven. Today, in practically all types of oven, the structure above the floor level (except the facings) is of silica, while in the recuperative and in some regenerative types, its use is extended to that portion of the oven below the floor as well. By reason of the fact that there are a number of classes of refractories of higher silica content than the usual so-called fire-clay brick, there is sometimes a misunderstanding as to the class of material referred to as "silica" brick. We here refer only to a brick having a silica content of 94 per cent. or more and made usually from quartzite rock with a small percentage of lime as a binder. The term "silica" brick is sometimes rather loosely applied to brick from highly siliceous clays, or to a quartzite refractory of mingled fire-clay and quartz rock; but such products are not considered in this discussion. : Materials The rock from which practically all high-grade silica brick are made is a true quartzite or metamorphosed sandstone, variously known as

The investigation described in this paper deals with the development of high-temperature alloys of the Konel series over a considerable period of time at t,he Research Laboratories of the Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Co. The word ''Konel" has been coined to designate a class of alloys which are essentially nickel-cobalt-iron with other elements added, usually in small quantities. Most of these alloys contain titanium, usually about 2.5 per cent. The main consideration related to strength at high temperatures but the thermionic characteristics of the alloys was also of considerable importance. It is, however, with the mechanical properties at elevated temperatures that we are herein concerned. Much attention has also been devoted to their age-hardening characteristics. There is little need to stress the utilitarian aspect of this subject, as it has been discussed frequently. Alloys exhibiting superior properties at normal or elevated temperatures rapidly find many suitable applications. There may be some question, however, as to what constitutes a "superior alloy," or an alloy that may have good service possibilities at high temperatures. The problem is complex and various means have been employed to predict the useful life that may be expected of a material. In recent years the "creep limitJ' has been used as the best means of evaluation. Such tests necessarily are prolonged and hence collection of data is very slow. In a general survey of many alloys therefore the creep test is not desirable and recourse must be had to much shorter time tests in order more rapidly to select alloys which appear to show promise. For this reason the present survey has been made using the high-temperature tensile test and a bend test developed by Howard Scott.' In the tensile test the conditions have been standardized for all tests, so that values obtained are at least comparable, one alloy with another, although the absolute values recorded merely indicate the mechanical properties at the given temperature under a definite rate of loading.

EIGHT years ago in this department we had a column on the daiquiri cocktail, which, as we pointed out at that time, was invented by mining engineers. Since then we have said little or nothing about alcoholic drinks, but having set the precedent perhaps we may now pass along a little information about martinis. We have observed that as an aperitif the martini has become increasingly popular with men, so much so that we always feel a bit peculiar if we order something else. And the call is not for just a martini either; it must be a dry martini, and some of our friends are extremely particular on this point. The matter has achieved such importance that The New York Times devoted half a page to it a few Sundays back. Several recipes are given which may be useful to some of our members when entertaining visitors from this part of the country: The standard martini is said to be half gin, half Italian vermouth, two dashes orange bitters, and a pickled onion and twist of lemon peel. This progresses to the very dry martini, which calls for five parts gin and one part vermouth with an onion, olive, or lemon peel. Several alternatives are offered for the manufacture of the very, very dry martini. One is to pour a little vermouth into the mixing glass and pour it out again before mixing gin and ice. A second way is to put the ice in a sieve, hold it over the sink, and pour a little vermouth over it; then put the ice in the mixing glass. A third is to let the draft from an electric fan blow across an open vermouth bottle toward the mixing glass. Then the ultimate is the awfully dry martini, obtained by setting the vermouth bottle next to the mixing glass and turning the bottle slowly so that the label is exposed to the gin for perhaps a second. The Times notes that Mr. Martini himself personally prefers vermouth and soda.

Considerable attention has been directed in recent years to methods of electric prospecting other than the conventional direct-current techniques. It has been extensively recognized that electrical data of a more general nature than that possible by direct-current methods might be useful in geophysical studies. To this end, a number of different types of electric currents have been employed, such as single-frequency alternating currents, square-topped periodic current waves,4 periodic surges of a less specific nature,s and suddenly applied direct current.1,2 Yet, to the author's knowledge, little analysis of these different types of driving currents has been made from the standpoint of network theory to determine just what typc of currents would give the most useful data, and, most important of all, to determine the relation of the data taken by one method to those of another. Without touching on the actual theoretical problem of how currents flow in the earth under specified boundary conditions, some very useful information can be obtained from the study of the fundamental integral equations of electrical networks, throwing light on the problem not ordinarily appreciated by the field worker. Some manipulation of the standard network equations will be made, with the sole purpose in mind of developing expressions leading to practical results. Suppose that four points in the earth have been located and it is wished to obtain the most useful type of electrical data by inserting current into two of them and measuring the potential developed between the other two. The first problem that arises is that of which pair of the four shall be chosen as current grounds. In the direct-current case, where only steady potentials are measured, the selection is of little consequence, but as soon as currents varying with time are used at the current grounds, a new effeet arises. The fact that a varying current is flowing in the current-carrying conductor between the current grounds means that magnetic and electric fields varying with time will be produced

A quarter of a century of service of steel rails on our oldest railroads, many of which have changed their standard sections three or four times, has furnished, and is furnishing, excellent opportunities to study their wear and behavior in the track. Such experience is valuable for the design of new sections, now required to meet the constantly increasing severity of railroad service. Before presenting the new sections for consideration, I will briefly call attention to some features of past experience. For convenience of study, rails may be separated according to their weight and height into four groups, viz.: 1. Hails weighing per yard from 52 to 60 pounds, and 34 to 4 inches high. 2. " " " " " 60 " 72 " " 46 to 44 " " 3. " " " " " 72 " 90 ' 41/8 to 5 4. " " " " " 85 or more " " over 5 " I Experience in this country is confined mainly to sections in groups Nos. 1, 2 and 3. • During the past few years I have had the opportunity to run my car over many thousands of miles of railway laid with the principal sections in use, and to obtain diagrams showing their deflections, permanent set, and, in a great measure, their manner of wear. The First Group.—The first steel rails imported, and those manufactured here, were light sections—included in the first group—and many of them, being rolled in rolls used for rolling iron sections, have pear-shaped heads, 2 3/8 to 2 1/2 inches wide, the base being heavy and from 1/4 to 1/2 inch narrower than the height. These rails were laid upon ties of solid timber, at least 8 inches face, spaced 2 feet from center to center. The moments of inertia of these rails were low, only ranging from 8 for the lightest sections to 12 for the heaviest. Among the many newer disclosures that have accompanied the petroleum industry's progressively deeper exploratory drilling is the increased frequency with which the operators are encountering reservoirs of which the products at the time of discovery exist wholly or predominantly in the gas phase. The popular term "distillate pool" is most often used within the industry when referring to this type of reservoir, and in this paper the term is used in that sense. These pools have been observed in many different surroundings. In some places the entire reservoir is filled with the wet gas containing its water-white condensible products in the gas phase but apparently with no dark oil or other hydrocarbon liquids in the reservoir. The 8200-ft. horizon in the Big Lake field in West Texas is a good example of this type. At other places the wet, or distillate-bearing, gas may form a large gas cap directly overlying and in contact with an extensive reserve of dark oil. Oklahoma City, Kettleman Hills, the 8500-ft. horizon in the Big Lake field, and many others are examples of this type. There are also many places in which the wet distillate-bearing gas fills nearly the entire reservoir space, while the dark oil occupies only a narrow, bandlike zone, which marks the boundary of the reservoir along its lowest productive contour. The heavier components of these deep pool gases are generally water white in color, a large portion of which are condensible in a conventional oil and gas separator, when operated under pressures of the order of 400 to 800 Ib. per sq. in. Although the water-white products recovered in the separator sometimes have end points of 650" F. and higher on standard Engler distillation, they occur only in the gas phase in the reservoir. It is entirely possible that even some small amounts of dark colored reservoir components may occur in the gas phase when the temperature is 300" F. and pressures exceed 6000 Ib. per sq. in. Close approaches to these conditions have been encountered in the deepest producing wells. The condensible content of the deep reservoir gases of the many pools that have been tested or produced to date shows a wide variation in both condensible content, per 1000 cu. ft. of gas, and physical character.

At the joint session of Blast Furnace and Open Hearth Committees, April 7, 1937, at Birmingham, the subject of the quality of basic open-hearth pig iron was so well presented and discussed from so many different viewpoints that it was the general opinion that progress had been made and that such meetings were conducive to the advancement of the art of making pig iron of the right quality for the open-hearth man to produce the most satisfactory quality of steel. It was agreed that there is a decided differentiation between the chemical analysis of pig iron and the "quality" of pig iron. Paul J. McKim said that open-hearth furnace operators frequently make reference to certain types of iron as "bad iron," "dirty iron," "cold metal," etc., claiming that when using these irons, although they are within specified chemical analysis, it is impossible to produce quality steel. Mr. McKim gave a list of the suggested causes of those "certain types" of bad irons that have a thoroughly respectable analysis but a thoroughly disreputable character. Another open-hearth man, P. A. MacIsaac, of Nova Scotia, said that: The effects of iron that is below standard in analysis or in that mysterious property called quality, are well known to all open-hearth operators. It has been shown that iron of this type results in the production of steels on which the rcjections of finished product run high. What is to be done about it? I would say that the burden of producing high-quality iron should be placed squarely on the shoulders of the blastfurnace man, even as that of making good steel is shouldered by the open-hearth man. It is the purpose of this paper to bring out into the open this "mysterious property called quality"; that is, in those "certain types" of basic pig iron that make it impossible to produce quality steels; and at the same time to point the way for the blast-furnace man to be able to shoulder the burden that Mr. MacIsaac and all other open-hearth men and foundry-men have placed upon him. Mining systems with greater than a 20-foot face advance (deep cut) have become popular due to their increased productivity and safety. The face dust collection system used in many of the mines employing the deep cut systems, incorporates a machine mounted dust collector with either a blowing or exhausting line brattice and a remote control operated continuous miner. In order to characterize and quantify the parameters used to control dust with these systems, the Dust Division conducted studies on four mining sections using continuous miners with deep cut mining systems. On each section, the dust control system incorporated line brattice with a machine mounted dust collector. The remote control made it possible for the continuous mining machine to advance further while permitting the operator to remain under supported roof and away from dust generated during mining. The purpose of these studies was to evaluate the effectiveness of deep cut mining systems using dust collectors to control respirable dust exposure. This paper summarizes the results of the studies conducted. At each mine face workers were sampled to determine their full-shift dust exposure. Additionally, fixed point dust samples were collected at various locations to determine relative concentrations of dust generated from mining. Air quantities were measured at each working place to determine the amount of air delivered to the face area. Evaluations were made by comparing worker exposures to respirable dust samples taken at appropriate locations upstream and downstream of the coal faced being mined. An estimate of the amount of the respirable dust being generated at the face during mining and the amount of respirable dust being removed by the dust collectors was made by balancing the air quantities and the dust concentrations immediately upstream and downstream of the coal face. Results of the studies showed that the dust control systems, were effective for controlling workers exposure to respirable dust. Dust collector efficiencies were determined to be approximately 85 percent. While the dust collectors were effective in removing respirable dust, the success of the systems with line brattice greater than twenty feet from the face, was dependent on the use of the remote control which permitted the continuous miner operator to remain out of the high concentration dust cloud in the working face. Dilution from intake air, combined with the dust collector efficiency, maintained exposure of other section workers below applicable standards.

WITH the movement of American capital into foreign investment, a new field of specialization for the American mining engineer is gradually opening a field hitherto entered almost wholly by chance and without full appreciation of its possibilities. Our age has been fitly called the "Age of Specialization." The special application of one's knowledge and ability to a definite and restricted branch of .his profession is purely a modern condition. Any profession, or branch of a profession or, industry, in which the problems may be segregated into definite types, calls for specializa-tion. Modern industry demands efficiency and that, reduction and ultimate annihilation of waste. Effort and time wasted by workers' on a problem with which they are not familiar is as flagrant a waste of money -the final standard-as any waste of materials. One of the subdivisions of mining engineering which is beginning to be recognized is of engineers who are clearly conversant with the particular and peculiar problems obtaining under foreign operating conditions. The need is as yet obscured, however, by the domestic prosperity of our American mining industry. The opportunity here lies more with the American engineer than with other nationals. The foreign en-gineer now in that service is not there through a realiza-tion of the special opportunities that exist, but through necessity, whereas, with the American engineer, more especially ,the recent graduate or those who will soon graduate, this is a new field to be entered wholly by choice. As a matter of fact, many engineering students will find it necessary to seek foreign service if they wish to remain in mining. Although the scope of the domes-tic industry is tremendous and there are many positions open to the junior engineer, there are not enough for the great number of graduates turned out yearly from our, mining schools. Educators tell us that less than 40 per cent. of the students in engineering schools gradu-ate; and of these but a minority continue in engineering. Even this minority is too great for our domestic. In-dustry, and although the young engineer realizes that condition after a few years he rarely seeks foreign work. A. perusal of the directory of the American Institute of Mining Engineers indicates that, but about one-half of one per cent of the Junior Associates are in positions outside of North America. Granting that most of them are still in school, the figure is surpris-ingly small.

It has been shown that iron of this type results in the production of steels on which the rcjections of finished product run high. What is to be done about it? I would say that the burden of producing high-quality iron should be placed squarely on the shoulders of the blastfurnace man, even as that of making good steel is shouldered by the open-hearth man. It is the purpose of this paper to bring out into the open this "mysterious property called quality"; that is, in those "certain types" of basic pig iron that make it impossible to produce quality steels; and at the same time to point the way for the blast-furnace man to be able to shoulder the burden that Mr. MacIsaac and all other open-hearth men and foundry-men have placed upon him. Several members of the CIM Reserve Definition Committee, the CIM Estimation Best Practices Committee and some members of the Committee for Mineral Resources International Reporting Standards have reviewed these issues and provide the following commentary.Issue 1. - CSA requested CIM review and comment on the selection of an appropriate commodity price to be used in Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves estimates.Commodity prices are used in the estimation of Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves and in the economic analysis of a property. In times of rapidly changing commodity prices, or when prices are at the extreme ends of a commodity price cycle, the QP has a difficult job in selecting an appropriate commodity price.• The selection of appropriate technical variables, including commodity price, is clearly the responsibility of the Qualified Person (QP). The QP must describe the reasons for selecting these variables, including price, in the technical report.• The definition of a ""Mineral Resource"" contains the wording ""reasonable prospects for economic extraction,"" therefore, a QP must select economic parameters, including commodity price, that will result in an estimate of Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves that have ""reasonable prospects for economic extraction""."

The requirements of the standard specifications under which Portland cement is sold have materially increased within the past 10 years, but practically all companies are now furnishing cement better than these requirements; in some cases exceeding them by nearly 100 per cent. From a sales standpoint, it is desirable to have a product that is uniform to a high degree and free from occasional quality troubles. A failure in quality, even if it affects only a few hundred barrels out of a yearly output of a million or more, is apt to be talked about in the trade and to affect the salability of the entire output. For these reasons, there has recently been great activity along the lines of quality control and improvement; and some of the most interesting problems of the industry are in this field. From the manufacturing standpoint, the quality of cement is chiefly a matter of uniform and proper chemical composition of the raw mix fed to the kilns plus proper burning in the kilns; the fineness to which the cement is ground, the proportions of gypsum, the method of seasoning, and the like are contributory factors. Uniform chemical composition of the raw mix has been one of the most difficult problems to solve. Most plants will use from 1000 to 3000 tons of rock per day and in but few cases is this material as it lies in the quarry even approximately uniform in composition. The problem, then, is to quarry and mix this raw material in such a manner that every handful passing through the kilns will have practically the same analysis as every other handful. To accomplish this purpose there are two methods of preparation: the wet and the dry. In each process, a stone storage is the first requisite of a successful plant. This storage place may handle the stone before or after crushing; its capacity may vary from two to three days' up to several months' supply, but it should be so designed that it can be filled as desired by the chemist and drawn at such points as will give a mixture of the various kinds of stone coming from the quarry and a reasonably uniform material going to the mill. The size of the storage place and the method of handling should be varied according to the nature of the material.

R.G.K. Morrison (Chairman, Dept. of Mining Engineering and Applied Geophysics, McGill University, Montreal, Que. Canada) - The authors have introduced a subject, the intensive study of which has awaited scientific developments. These are now such as to justify a thorough review of our thinking on the causes and control of rockbursts. The formulae developed in the paper, the comparison between rockbursts and earthquakes in figure 1 and the energy data relating to explosives serve as an effective foundation. In the paper this writer is quoted as suggesting that energy of the order of 10 x 10 11 ft. lb. may have been released in some of the heaviest rockbursts in the Kolar Gold Field. He now hastens to add that such an estimate has no scientific validity. It arises only from a casual comparison of surface and underground effects of the medium heavy bursts, referred to in the paper and estimated by Jones at 3.0 x 1010 ft.lbs., with those of obviously greater magnitude. In any case, we have the estimate by Jones above, that by a team of seismologists 1 on the Witwatersrand of 10 x 1010 ft.lbs., that by Coates of 3.8 x 10" ft.lbs., also referred to in the paper, that by Blan-chard2 for the catastrophic rockburst at Springhill, N.S., of only 7.4 X 107 ft. lbs., and finally the range covered by Cook, referred to in the paper. It is probable also that data for the heavy rockburst at Merkers3 in the WERRA potash area of Germany are available as it was recorded on seismographs from Moscow to Spain. It is the writer's impression that some standardization is present in the estimates above for 10 x 10 10, 3.8 x 1010 and 7.4 x 107 ft.lbs., respectively. The latter, for Springhill, represents a relatively low order of magnitude. It is obvious that any energy estimate must be related to the local geometry of openings at the time of the event. It is also obvious that any explanation of the causes of rockburst must be capable of providing a wide range of energy. However, we must remember that the energy release is an effect indicating magnitude. The cause lies with the mechanism initiating the primary failure, generating the seismic activity, to which much of the damage is probably due.

Among the many newer disclosures that have accompanied the petroleum industry's progressively deeper exploratory drilling is the increased frequency with which the operators are encountering reservoirs of which the products at the time of discovery exist wholly or predominantly in the gas phase. The popular term "distillate pool" is most often used within the industry when referring to this type of reservoir, and in this paper the term is used in that sense. These pools have been observed in many different surroundings. In some places the entire reservoir is filled with the wet gas containing its water-white condensible products in the gas phase but apparently with no dark oil or other hydrocarbon liquids in the reservoir. The 8200-ft. horizon in the Big Lake field in West Texas is a good example of this type. At other places the wet, or distillate-bearing, gas may form a large gas cap directly overlying and in contact with an extensive reserve of dark oil. Oklahoma City, Kettleman Hills, the 8500-ft. horizon in the Big Lake field, and many others are examples of this type. There are also many places in which the wet distillate-bearing gas fills nearly the entire reservoir space, while the dark oil occupies only a narrow, bandlike zone, which marks the boundary of the reservoir along its lowest productive contour. The heavier components of these deep pool gases are generally water white in color, a large portion of which are condensible in a conventional oil and gas separator, when operated under pressures of the order of 400 to 800 Ib. per sq. in. Although the water-white products recovered in the separator sometimes have end points of 650" F. and higher on standard Engler distillation, they occur only in the gas phase in the reservoir. It is entirely possible that even some small amounts of dark colored reservoir components may occur in the gas phase when the temperature is 300" F. and pressures exceed 6000 Ib. per sq. in. Close approaches to these conditions have been encountered in the deepest producing wells. The condensible content of the deep reservoir gases of the many pools that have been tested or produced to date shows a wide variation in both condensible content, per 1000 cu. ft. of gas, and physical character.
