Steel Gorp.)—The authors are to be congratulated for their interesting article, which thoroughly illustrates the variables inherent in filtration of taconite concentrate. The work and the conclusions based thereon largely parallel the test work done by the writer at the Pilotac plant" and the experience gained with a commercial size agitating disk filter in the same plant. At Pilotac, however, a thorough study was also made of the effect of depolarizing (demagnetizing) the filter feed, and it is the purpose of this discussion to comment on the merits of depolarization of the magnetite concentrate prior to filtering. The work at Pilotac was done in three phases: 1) preliminary laboratory testing with a circular filter leaf of 0.047 sq ft, followed by 2) plant testing using a 4-ft diam, single-disk agitating filter that was purchased on the basis of the pilot tests on the 4-ft model. In the laboratory tests depolarization was achieved by slowly withdrawing' batches of thickened concentrate from a coil producing an alternating field of about 300 oersteds. In plant tests the standard Pilotac procedure' was employed, wherein the pulp falls freely through the depolarizing coil. The preliminary tests in the laboratory at first seemed to indicate that although depolarization of the filter feed decreases the cake moisture, it also tends to decrease the thickness of the cake, thus decreasing filtering rate. The tests with the 4-ft disk filter soon showed, however, that the compactness of the cake, attained during the form period because of depolarization, permitted a considerable decrease in drying time without any sacrifice in final moisture content. Thus, the filter could be operated at a much higher speed, and the overall capacity was higher than with magnetized feed. Because of the great compactness of the cake there was little shrinkage during the drying period, which prevented cracking and subsequent loss in vacuum. This in turn permitted operation with as thick a feed pulp as the diaphragm pumps could handle, eliminating the necessity of pulp density control. On the basis of these findings, the 6-ft agitating disk filter has been operated at 2 rpm, using feed pulps varying from 65 to 73 pct solids. Initially Saran 601 was used as medium, but it was later replaced with a relatively open, tight-twist nylon cloth. Filtering rates up to 750 lb per ft- er hr can be attained with feeds averaging about 70 pct- 270 mesh, and there is no trouble because of cracking. The cake moistures vary between 8.5 and 9.5 pct. To recapitulate, the merits of depolarizing the filter feed may be summed up as follows: 1) The well dispersed pulp shows less tendency to settle in the filter tank. 2) The homogeneous filter pool results in more even cake formation. 3) Because of absence of flocs, great compactness of cake is attained during the form period. 4) The cake does not tend to crack during the drying period. 5) A drier cake is produced. 6) A shorter drying period is necessary, permitting higher operating speed, which in turn results in increased capacity. 7) Density of the feed pulp can be kept as high as the equipment can handle. This increases capacity, since it is directly proportional to the percentage of solids in the pool. A few tests were also made to study the effect of chemical flocculants on filtration efficiency. Results showed that the effects of chemical and magnetic floc-culation were quite similar. Thus the use of a floccu-lant would impair rather than improve the filtering of magnetite concentrate. A. F. Palasvirta for his comments, particularly in view of the encouraging results obtained with demagnetized taconite concentrate. In our studies an attempt was made to evaluate the effects of depolarizing the feed to the plant filters by passing the slurry through a coil, similar to the method described by Palasvirta. Unfortunately, in our experiments there were no startling improvements in performance level, neither cake rate increase nor cake moisture reduction. However, when slow filter cycle speeds were employed, the filter cake tended to crack and the vacuum level dropped, resulting in an increase in cake moisture content. When demagnetized feed was used during slow speeds, no cake cracking was evidenced and the vacuum level remained constant. Thus the depolarizing coil was found necessary only in cases of cracking. It should be noted that most of our test work concerned a feed of 85 to 90 pct —335 mesh and about 60 pct by weight solids concentration. This contrasts with 70 pct —270 mesh and 65 to 73 pct by weight solids as noted by Palasvirta. Reviewing both sets of results, it might be concluded that depolarizing may be successfully employed to alleviate cake cracking tendencies and may markedly improve cake rates and moistures on the coarser taconite concentrates. Further investigations may disclose the exact relationship of grind and pulp density to the depolarizing action.

INTRODUCTION Safety must be a primary consideration in the design and construction of tunnels. Tunnel construction has historically been considered a high-risk business. During the construction of the 14.8 kilometer (9.25) mile St. Gotthard Tunnel in the Swiss Alps in the 1870s, 310 lives were lost and another 877 workers permanently disabled. In more recent days, two tunnel construction accidents in 1971, one in Michigan and one in California, claimed the lives of 38 workers. Prior to 1971, most regulations governing safety in tunnel construction were developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. These included a 1941 Bulletin 439, "Some Essential Safety Factors for Tunneling" and a 1968 Bulletin 644 which updated Bulletin 439. In 1970, the United States passed the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OSHA) which became effective in early 1971. That act covered all sorts of workplace activities including Tunnels and Shafts in 29 CFR 1926.800. In 1989, a revised and renamed 29 CFR 1926.800 was issued for Underground Construction. Some of the changes introduced in this rule were the outgrowth of improvements made in the California and Michigan codes after the 1971 accidents. These new regulations are the "Rules to Live By" for tunnel construction in the United States and are generally accepted as appropriate for tunnel construction throughout the world.

5.1 TECHNOLOGY FOR INJECTING GROUT INTO BOREHOLES The grouting of fractured rock aquifers is carried out in separate stopes' whose size is determined by the hydro¬stratigraphy and the hydrogeologic properties of the rocks. The number of grouting stopes required depends on the number of intervals in the hydrogeological section. Each grouting stope can include one or several aquifers. Com¬bining several water-producing strata into one stope is pos¬sible only when the values of their permeability coefficients are very similar. In order to achieve efficiency, as many aquifers as possible are included in each stope. In practice, the length of a grouting stope in a borehole usually ranges within 10 to 40 m, but occasionally up to 100 m or more. When conducting grouting operations through boreholes drilled from the face of underground workings, the stope's size can be determined by the thick¬ness of each fractured zone (fault) or by the length of the hole if the entire rock is fractured. Injecting grout into separate intervals of fractured rock can be done from the bottom to the top with ascending stopes or from the top to the bottom with descending stopes. Injection from bottom to top is always preferred. Injection also can be accomplished in separate fractured permeable horizons in the section. The STG integrated grouting method is based on the use of packer and injection equipment and technological schemes that facilitate injection in highly isolated fractured aquifers. For this purpose STG has developed a standard series of packers. 5.1.1 INJECTING GROUT THROUGH BOREHOLES DRILLED FROM THE SURFACE Grout can be injected according to one of four techno¬logical schemes depending on the depth of the fractured aquifers, their hydrogeologic properties and the availability of grout injection equipment if the area is remote (Fig. 43). In the first and most preferred technological scheme (1), the grout is injected from the bottom up with ascending stopes. When this scheme is employed, grouting holes are drilled to the entire projected depth based on the field investigations injection tubes is installed above the top of the first hydrostratigraphic unit to be grouted. This scheme al¬lows the grout to be injected only into the permeable stra¬tum or strata isolated by the packer near the bottom of the hole; it precludes the need to clean or redrill the hole before injecting grout into the next overlying stope. This ascending stope scheme is preferred because of its simplicity and ef¬ficiency. It is used in most of the grouting of saturated fractured rock for the purpose of isolating aquifers while excavating deep mine shafts in the USSR. The second technological scheme (II in Fig. 43) injects the grout in sequence from top to bottom with descending stopes. Injection under this scheme is accomplished through the hermetically-sealed mouth of the hole. It is most advis¬able to grout with descending stopes in saturated fractured rock wherein the aquifers constitute thick networks of frac¬tures. Under these conditions it is practically impossible to drill a grout hole to the entire depth of the underground workings due to the large production rate of ground water. In conducting isolation operations with descending stopes, additional work (relative to ascending stopes) is necessary to drill out the grout in order to create and inject the next stope. As a result, the total amount of drilling required to drill out grout can even exceed the volume of drilling of original rock. Consequently it is advisable to use this inefficient scheme only for injecting grout into holes that contain prolific frac¬tured aquifers at depths less than 150 to 200 m. The third and fourth technological schemes (III and IV in Fig. 43) are used in the selective grouting of separate aquifers. For example, these methods would be applied when a grout hole is drilled to its entire depth, wherein grouting of the upper aquifers must be done first so that the sinking of the first shaft can begin prior to deeper grouting. The third technological scheme is used for the selective injection of grout into an aquifer with a thickness of up to 5 m. For this work the DAU-1-2 removable dual packer is installed. It is lowered into the borehole on an injection pipeline. For aquifers with thicknesses of more then 5 m, the selective injection of the grout is carried out according to the fourth technological scheme; a combination of the DAU-2 hydrodynamic plug and the DAU-1 packing device is used. In order to implement this injection scheme, the DAU-2 hydro-dynamic plug is installed at the bottom of the fractured aquifer and the DAU-1 packer is installed at the top of the aquifer.

Application of the concepts of nu-cleation and growth to the analysis of experimental transformation data has led to valuable descriptions of phase transformations, an outstanding example being the transformation austenite —* pearlite which has been examined with particular care by Mehl and co-workers.&apos;-5 In addition to the pearlite transformation, the proeutectoid fer-rite and proeutectoid carbide transformations are known to proceed by nucleation and growth. Martensite, on the contrary, until recently was thought to form by a mechanism involving neither nucleation nor growth; however, extension of standard nucleation theory6 suggests that martensite, bain-ite, and the other products of austenite decomposition all grow from nuclei in the parent phase. The theory that martensite forms by nucleation and growth is strongly supported by recent experimental work of Kurdjumov and Maksimova.7 The concepts of nucleatioli and growth have been fruitful also in providing a sound basis for quantitative theoretical treatments of the kinetics of phase transformations. For example, Volmer and Weber8 and Becker and Döring9 developed the theory of nucleation from fundamental considerations to a point where excellent agreement was obtained with the results of experiments on the condensation of supercooled vapors. As a result of their analysis, the kinetics of vapor-liquid transformations now can be predicted. It seems probable that application of the theories of nucleation and growth to a quantitative study of austenite decomposition similarly will clarify the nature of the individual transfor: mations involved, and will enable the calculation of austenite transformation kinetics. In the present paper, the theories of nucleation and growth are applied to the austenite ? martensite transformation in steels. The analysis begins with a discussion of nucleation in single component systems. Martensite appears to be coherent with the parent austenite, hence the nucleation theory is modified to include the effects of elastic distortion. Nucleation in the two component iron-carbon system then is discussed, for most steels are primarily alloys of these two elements. Finally, M. temperatures and martensite transformation curves are calculated for each of several alloy steels of varying carbon and chromium content, and are compared with those determined experimentally by Lyman and Troiano10 and Harris and Cohen.11 Nucleation Theory NUCLEATION IN SINGLE COMPONENT SYSTEMS6,12-14 The work required for reversible formation of a region of phase within the parent a phase is expressed conveniently as the sum of two terms: W1 = Aa, the product of the area of the interface and the interfacial free energy, and W2 = VAf, the product of the volume of the region and the free energy increase per unit volume associated with the transformation. The total work is therefore W = Aa + VAf. When a is more stable than ß, Af is positive and W increases without limit as the volume increases. The transformation a ?ß does not occur. It is nevertheless true that small regions of phase ß enjoy temporary existence here and there in the a. The equilibrium number of ß regions of given size is proportional to exp(— W/kT) per unit volume of a, assuring that larger (ß regions occur with diminishing probability. When a is less stable than ß, Af is negative and W passes through a maximum as V increases. Assuming for simplicity that regions of ß are spherical, as is true when the interfacial tension is isotropic and there are no elastic strains, W = 4r2a + (4/3)*r3Af The maximum value of W is W* = 16iro3/3Af2 [1] for regions with radius r* = -2o/Af. [2] For single component condensed systems it has been shown14 that the steady rate of nucleation of 0 per unit volume of untransformed a is nearly proportional to exp[- (W* + Q)/kT] where Q is the activation energy for the unit processes of adding or removing one atom from an embryo or nucleus. If To is the temperature at which a and ß are in equilibrium, the rate of nucleation is a maximum at a temperature 0 < T < To where (W* + Q)/kT is a minimum. P regions smaller than critical size are called embryos; they tend to grow smaller and disappear, only exceptionally growing larger. Regions equal to or larger than critical size are called nuclei. A critical size nucleus may grow indefinitely large or may shrink back to a, either process decreasing the free energy of the region.

Historically, rock deposits and sand deposits of titanium minerals came into production about the same time, although there may be some argument as to what is meant by production. Beach deposits of heavy minerals in India (Figs. 1-4) and Brazil (Figs. 5) were worked for monazite about the turn of century, but as there was then no market for titanium minerals, these were thrown away. The rock rutile deposits at Roseland, Va., Fig. 6, were worked to supply rutile for titanium chemicals and for coloring ceramics long before there was a titanium pigment business. The pigment industry started about the middle twenties, both in Europe and the U. S., and almost simultaneously the rock deposits at Ponte Vedra Beach near Jacksonville, Fla., were worked for titanium content. Since those days, production from both types of deposits has continued to grow at a rapid rate; many deposits of both types have been found, and reserves have grown to very large figures. In total tonnage of reserves, there is no doubt that the rock deposits are far ahead of the sand deposits; nevertheless there is a very large tonnage of commercial sands available. It is the quality of titanium mineral in the sand and the relatively lower costs of operating sand deposits that have kept them abreast, at least in annual tonnage produced, with the rock deposits. The principal titanium mineral used is ilmenite, but as soon as that mineral began to be sought as a titanium ore, it was obvious that there are ilmenites and ilmenites. Textbook ilmenite should have the composition FeOTiO2 and should analyze 52.6 pct TiO2 and 36.8 pct iron as Fe. The Indian ilmenite, for almost a generation the standard ore for manufacturing pigment in the U. S., was found to analyze about 60 pct TiO, and only 24 pct. Fe, and most of the iron is in the ferric condition. The whole process of pigment manufacture in the U. S. was built up on the use of a raw material of that grade, and the American chemical engineers who operate the pigment plants shuddered at the thought of using a rock ilmenite with 45 pct or so of TiO, and nearly 40 pct Fe. Intensive search was made around the world to find other deposits of rich black sand, like the Indian beaches, but although a few were found, there was some objectionable feature about each. A deposit in Senegal, south of Dakar (Fig. 7), was worked for a while, but an organic coating on the grains made attack by acid difficult. Modern practice would have included a scrubbing operation, in a caustic soda bath, to eliminate the organic coating. Brazilian deposits were numerous, but individually small, and shipping from them difficult. Deposits on the east coast of Ceylon had many attractive features, but the ilmenite analyzed only 54 pct TiO2 and could have been used only with a penalty. Sand deposits with 2 pct ilmenite, like those now worked in Florida, would not have been considered commercial ore, even if they had been known at that time. Most rock ilmenites are associated or mixed with hematite or magnetite, which accounts for the lower titanium and higher iron values than in the sand ilmenites. The Norwegians, English, and Germans, with cheap Norwegian rock ore at hand, learned to install in their pigment plants adequate capacity on the black side, as it is calltd, and counterbalanced the extra cost of plant, and larger amount of acid used, by the lower cost of ore. When World War II arrived, two of the largest pigment manufacturers in the U. S. had to learn how to use the Adirondack ilmenite, but one of them very gladly went back to sand ores when the Florida deposits came into large-scale production after the war. The other continues to use Adirondack ilmenite and finds it commercially attractive to do so. Rutile is not a raw material for titanium pigment manufacture by the sulfate process, since it is insoluble in sulfuric acid. In addition to its small consumption in chemicals and ceramics it began to be used in quantity in welding rod coatings. With the outbreak of World War 11, and the tremendous need for welding rods in shipbuilding and other structural steel construction, rutile suddenly became in heavy demand. The sand deposits on the eastern shore of Australia (Fig. 8A) which had been worked in a small way since 1934 were brought into production, and some stream placers in Brazil were worked and rutile concentrates shipped to American

This paper is an attempt to put together petrographic, physical, and chemical data about the large and varied group of rocks generally called limestones. Results of the properties of these rocks on their performance as concrete aggregates are discussed. CRUSHED stone classified as limestone comprises about 70 pct of the crushed concrete aggregate and roadstone produced in this country, and the product has amounted in the recent past to about 97 million tons per year, valued at more than $123,-000,000.&apos; Therefore an evaluation of the properties of rocks classified in these statistics as limestones and an ability to predict their behavior as aggregate in portland cement concrete are matters of considerable economic consequence to producers and consumers of aggregate. This paper is an attempt to put together petrographic, physical, and chemical data about the large and varied group of rocks generally called limestones. It also points out certain results of the properties of these rocks on their performance as concrete aggregates. The problems encountered in efforts to explain the behavior of limestones, dolomites, and related rocks as concrete aggregate lie on the frontiers between the ignorance of the geologists and the ignorance of the engineers. The mineral composition and textures of the rocks have not been adequately explored and described, and the effects of mineral composition and texture on the performance of aggregates have been worked out in only a few cases. There are instances of unsatisfactory performance and some generalizations of those experiences. There are many more examples of satisfactory performance than of unsatisfactory, but there is practically no published information as to why a particular aggregate was satisfactory in a specific use. There are all too few investigations of undeteriorated concrete; more is known about the pathology of concrete than about its normal structure and aspect. As part of the investigation of aggregates, the classification of rocks is not an end in itself, but is a step toward recognition of properties expected to influence the behavior of aggregates in their intended use. Rock of any type may perform well or poorly as concrete aggregate, depending on the physical condition of the rock, its physical and chemical properties as compared to those of the matrix in which it is placed, and the circumstances under which the concrete is exposed. Some classification and descrip- tion of the limestones is necessary to distinguish subgroups whose members will probably behave in similar ways and to evaluate the group as a whole. The group name, limestone, includes and tends to conceal the identity of rocks that have a very great range in chemical and mineralogical composition, structure and texture, conditions of deposition, subsequent history, and suitability for use as concrete aggregate. All the rocks classified as limestones include one or both of the most abundant rock-form-ing carbonate minerals, calcite and dolomite, as major constituents. Carbonate rocks is a more descriptive and more accurate group name than limestone, which has generally been used to include dol-omitic or magnesian limestones and dolomites as well as calcitic limestones. Classification and Description of the Carbonate Rocks The question of names to be applied to the carbonate rocks may appear academic, but it is of practical importance as long as there are specifications for aggregate that result in acceptance or rejection of rocks by name and as long as failure to make distinctions among the carbonate rocks leads to misunderstandings of their properties and of what may be expected of them in performance. Materials included in production statistics as limestone and tested for concrete aggregate as limestone range in fact from calcareous shale and calcareous or dolomitic sandstone and argillaceous limestone and dolomite to calcitic limestone and pure dolomite and to rocks close to calcitic and dolomitic marble. To take a simple example: consider two manufactured coarse aggregates, both dense and unweathered, one composed principally of crystalline calcite and the other of crystalline dolomite, but both known as limestone. If each is used as coarse aggregate in a standardized concrete mixture with the same fine aggregate used in both cases, made into concrete specimens, and tested in accelerated freezing-and-thaw-ing, the test results will probably be quite different, because of the differences in internal bond and thermal properties between the two aggregates. As long as both aggregates are called limestone, the test results cannot be explained, or used except in a very limited way; if the aggregates are distinguished as limestone and dolomite and the consequent differences in texture and thermal properties are recognized, the results are reasonable. This paper describes a technique of polishing and etching specimens of open-hearth furnace slags or hearth aggregates for identification of the crystalline constituents —lime (CaO), tricalcium silicate (3CaO.SiO2), dicalcium silicate (2CaO.-SiO2), rnonticellite (CaO.MgO.SiO2), or forsterile (2MgO.SiO2), with especial em-phasis on the mineral merwinite (3CaO.-MgO.2SiO2). With proper standardization, this identification does not require the use of the petrographic microscope. The composition of basic open-hearth slags and furnace bottoms falls, almost without exception, within systems containing CaO, MgO, &apos;IFeO,,, MnO and SiOz, in which the number of basic molecules so greatly exceeds the orthosilicate ratio (two molecules of base to one of silica) that free basic oxides, and combinations between them such as alumi-nates or ferrites, are present in cooled specimens. Orthosilicates of (CaO + NgO) are the most common in such specimens, since in nearly all cases, except premelt slags, the molecular ratio of (CaO + MgO) to SiO, is more than 2 to I. When sufficient lime is available it combines with the silica to form dicalcium silicate (2Ca0.Si02), which contains little, if any, IvfgO, FeO or MnO in solid solution whereas the latter oxides combine to form the oxide solid solution known as periclase. If the lime present is insufficient to form dicalcium silicate (2Ca0.Si02) it combines with Mgo to form either merwillite or moIlticellite (SiOz); these minerals take little if any FeO or MnO into solid solution and the remaining MgO, FeO and hInO combine as periclase. This generalization seems to be valid for basic slags and furnace bottoms, since minerals such as Ca0.MnOSi02 and CaO.FeO.SiOz are found only in slags in which the lime-silica ratio is less than 2 and are not observed in &apos;pecimens from furnace bottoms. The identification of crystalline constituents in such materials, especially of fine crystals in the groundmass, is difficult under the petrographic microscope. They are often masked by their neighbors because of their small size in relation to the thickness of the thin section and because of the presence of Opaque Or colored constituents. The indices of refraction and the optical sign of the mineral are sometimes difficult to determine because of the small size or because Of twinning or of inclusions within the crystal. Moreover, the positive identification of merwinite (3Ca0.Mg0.2Si02) from its optical properties is usually difficult in the presence of dicalcium silicate (zCaO.SiO2). CaO, MgO, jCa0.Si02 and 2Ca0.SiOz in open-hearth &apos;lags have been identified for a number of years in the U.S. Steel Corporation Laboratory by the usual

There is a Chinese saying-may you live in interesting times. Certainly we do tod.a~our mining professions. We are, of course, totally dependent on a&apos; healthy mining industry for the chance to practice our chosen professions, and for our Institute.Let us look at one of the more interesting facts. The mining industry now accounts for some 50 per cent of Australia&apos;s exports.This massive earning of foreign exchange is the key to keeping our increasing overseas debt in check. Furthermore, mineral production..including petroleum, saves us a large amount of foreign currency by providing essential minerals, including energy minerals, for local consumption.With such fundamental inputs to our economy, any primary school student, any child in fact, should be able to see that the mining industry and mining professions are very important to our nation. Yet the average citizen is unaware of this simple fact as they enjoy their high standard&apos;of living and think that we are still living in the lucky country.Therefore, it is most interesting to me that the average citizen, and most of our politicians, seem to hold mining and miners in low esteem. I use the term miners to describe all those important people, like us, who work in the mining professions, and are employed by, or are dependent on, the mining industry.So why are we miners in this paradoxical situation of doing wonderful works, being the backbone of the country, and yet being held in low regard by the very community we underwrite.Truly-it is interesting-or did the Chinese mean intriguing?It is indeed paradoxical that we are the rare people who open up the land, borrow small parts of it for a relatively short time to harvest the mineral crops, then return it to the community for other uses; and when we return the land back to the community at large it should be in better shape than when we started. There will be infrastructure - roads, airstrips, supplies of water and power, parks and housing-all left behind after mining.These benefits to the community are ignored while our critics focus on the small scars on the landscape which sometimes cannot be healed at reasonable cost; and yet, if we allow time, nature usually heals the small scars anyway. Look at New Zealand, particularly the Coromandel Peninsula which was intensively mined and logged; now it is covered with secondary growth and stark pine plantations. Remember that mining scars are infinitesimally small when compared to urban sprawl or clearing of land for farming and grazing, or highways, or the area of most national parks.Thus, miners are important citizens economically, and we are the majority of the few who actually practice the principles of multiple land use.What are the consequences of our image? They are serious in that the poor image we seem to project, discourages many people from becoming involved in, or supportive of, our industry. This brings me to my theme for the year: Students, Education and Communication - the Key to our Future.

The role of microorganisms in the leaching of metal sulfides is well established (Torma, 1977; Murr, 1980). However, this established knowledge applies mostly to chemolithotropic microorganisms such as Thiobacillus ferrooxidans which function optimally in leaching catalysis between 25-35° C, and in a pH range of 2-2.5. Although leaching with thermophilic microorganisms capable of extending the range of catalytic viability beyond 35° C is also documented, there are few if any attempts to optimize or extend sulfide concentrate leaching with thermophilic microorganisms. When mixed metal sulfides or other materials having different rest potentials (referenced to the standard hydrogen electrode, SHE, in the electromotive series) make contact in a conducting, aqueous medium, the contacting members will act as an electrochemical cell, with the member having the higher rest potential assuming the role of an electrical cathode. In leaching reactions involving such galvanic couples, the cathode becomes passivated, while the anodic member reacts vigorously due to the electro- chemical reaction which occurs (Hiskey and Wads- worth, 1975). Serry, eta1 (1978) observed that when chalcopyrite and pyrite were in intimate contact in natural ores, the chalcopyrite reacted vigorously by galvanic conversion as a result of the higher rest potential (~ 0.63 V) as compared to the chalcopyrite (~ 0.53 V). In addition, it was postulated that because of the elemental sulfur which can form on the anodic chalcopyrite in this galvanic conversion process, reactions in acid-bacterial medium would be expected to have accelerated copper extraction because of the conversion of any sulfur product layer on the chalcopyrite anode to sulfuric acid according to the following general reactions: [MS?M2+ + S° + 2e- (1) and 2S° + 302 + 2H20 bacteria?-2H2SO 4 (2)] where M in reaction (1) designates the metal (or metals in the specific case of chalcopyrite) to be released to solution by galvanic conversion.

"The use of a torque wrench to establish the amount of actual load developed on an expansion anchor bofting system dates back to work completed in the early 1950s. The advent of ultrasonic measurement systems and hydraulic torque wrenches has made it possible for the U.S. Bureau of Mines to perform torque-tension measurements in the laboratory and the field much more accurately. The results indicate that the amount of initial boft preload may be overestimated by amounts in excess of 45% of the expected load using torque wrenches. This inaccuracy is primarily due to the friction that occurs between the bearing plate and the head of the boft. These parameters become extremely important when the support system is being used to prevent joint members from slipping relative to each other or when the boft acts as a heavy spring to clamp two or more sections together. Methods to overcome the frictional losses are presented in conjunction with a laboratory method to determine the actual torque-tension ratios for expansion anchor and combination bolting systems.IntroductionMechanically anchored roof bolts have been widely used in the mining industry since their introduction in 1947. Estimates made in 1989 indicate that out of 85 million fixtures, approximately 49 million bolting fixtures still use applied tension to complete the reinforcement necessary to maintain stable openings. Nearly 85 million bolts are used yearly. The most widely used bolt is the resin-anchored headed rebar, followed by standard mechanical roof bolts, specialty bolts (mechanically anchored, resin enhanced fixtures) , and combination bolts . Po st-tensioned resin rebars, combination systems, and friction stabilizers make up the remaining 10% of the units used (Fig. I).For mechanical, combination, and tension rebar bolts, the bolt tension is the primary means of reinforcing the roof, but in many cases, because of poor installation procedures, the bolts are ineffective. Mine operators recognize the importance of proper installation procedures. Long-term bolt tension measurements are required in the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR)In each bolting cycle, the actual torque or tension of the first tensioned bolt installed with each drill head shall be measured immediately after it is installed. Thereafter, for each drill head used, at least one roof bolt out of every four installed shall be measured for actual torque or tension. If the actual torque or tension of any roof bolts measured is not within the range specified in the roof control plan, corrective action shall be taken."

"The new H-W orebody was evaluated by considering its production at three technically feasible rates. Capital and operating costs were estimated f or each rate and production sequences were established using mining cutoff limits generated by an ore value algorithm. The viability of the project was then examined by conducting economic and financial analyses of each of the three production cases under various world economic scenarios. These analyses employing standard profitability measures demonstrated all three cases would be economically viable; the production case which maximized the Net Present Value of the project was the one selected for development and production.IntroductionWestmin Resources Limited and its predecessor company, Western Mines Ltd., has been continuously carrying out mining operations near Myra Falls in Central Vancouver Island since December 1966. The mining operation, whose current production rate is approximately 830 tonnes / day (t/d), based on ore derived from the Myra and Lynx Mines, produces copper, lead and zinc concentrates which contain significant quantities of gold and silver in addition to the base metals.In the late 1970s, with Lynx and Myra ore reserves slipping to unacceptably low levels, a major increase in mine-site exploration was initiated, with outside geological staff brought in to complement the efforts of the mine&apos;s geological staff. By the end of 1979, this program had resulted in the discovery of a significant new orebody on a deeper horizon some 300 metres below the one which hosts the Lynx and Myra deposits. Throughout the period 1980-1982, major drilling was carried out to evaluate the new H-W deposit and by the end of 1982, drill-indicated mineral inventory for the deposit compared with Myra, Lynx and Price ore reserves was as shown in Table I. During this same three-year period, a major development and evaluation program was underway comprising environmental monitoring and control programs, shaft sinking test mining, bulk sampling and mill testing, rock mechanics studies and preparation of the Stage I and II reports for the multidisciplinary Environmental Land Use Committee (ELUC).As a result of the preliminary engineering work and exploration drilling, it became rapidly apparent that the H-W deposit could support a considerably higher production rate than the current one. Accordingly, engineering studies including scheduling of development and production as well as capital and operating cost estimates, were focused on three possible production rates: 1350, 1800 and 2700 t/d. Our task was to select the optimum one of these three rates."

INTRODUCTION The flotation process, in the real industrial complexes, is characterized by the existence of the significant number of the close reciprocal interrelationship between the input and output Darameters. Traditional complexity is appeared with regard to absence of the suitable a priori information for the physico-chemical characteristics of the flotation process. It’s led to needful of taking of consideration about the undefinition which have got the place in the real conditions and application of the statistical methods. The identification of the flotation process through statistical methods is conception of the more-stages procedure, including the collection and previous analysis, the choice of the model structure and valuation method, the estimation of the model un- known parameters and the results interpretation. The essential concept for the subject of this paper belongs to the empirical models ("black-box") and deals with optimizing in constant industrial plant process. The offered method envisages the application of process operation data in order to improve the work process or constant accomplishment of better results for the target function in relation to the former achievement. The optimum process solution isn&apos;t afixed value under the influence of various factors, but "a moving point" along the response surface and deviates from the scheme solutions. The evolutive planning method constantly "investigates and approaches" the optimum solution for the selected target function. As a matter of fact the expert operates the plant without interrupting the normal work process. The essential concept of method is to attain changes in the standard conditions, but so limited that they will not effect either production or the product. This method is based on statistical concepts and availability of following the risk of error. The possible influental factors for the flotation process (m=l, 2, 3) is following: the metal content in the feed ore; production level (t/h); grinding fineness in the flotation pulp; pH-values; the consumption of collectors and modifiers The possible target functions are: the recovery of plant capacity, metal recovery in the concentration process and concentration quality. The application of the evolutive operativity method in the chalcopyrite flotation- Bucim concentrator, combines the statistical data and the operator&apos;s experience in the interpretation and making a decision which adds up to the precise automatic performance of the process. The advantages of this method in relation to the existing procedure for the flotation process are the following: • The method is unexpensive and losses are reduced to the time necessary to collect the data and record them in the computer. This method provides a constant process control and a quality decision which is better than those brought by an ex- pert with great experience ("hit-and-miss method"). • The method also provides incidental data about the effects. • The method should not be considered as a procedure for solving an incidental problem ("crash program"). • The obtained results must be interpreted by an appropriate expert in order to be considered instructive. MATHEMATICAL STATISTICS Taking into consideration the complexity of the enrichment processes it&apos;s necessary the application of "black-box" and mathematical modelling. The presence of the indefinite elements compel us towards the both theory of the probability and mathematical statistics. The mathematical statistics by the mineral processing investigation of the valuable raw materials in the last years has had greater signifance and widely spread application. The application of the mathematical statistics methods for the technological pro- cess analysis and the construction of the mathematical models is bound up by the task putting of the automatic control system de- sign (Fisher R. A. 1941, 1949). The statistical analysis in the enrichment processes is applied formerly, especially in the sampling estimation. Contemporary, in the last years is imposed the tendency of mathematical statistics application for the obtaining of quantity characteristics and quantity valuation from the individual influental factors. Above mentioned tendency in the significant level is based by the mathematical statistics development as a mathematical discipline close connected with the technical cybernetics general joining to the investigated object as a "black-box". Another essential factor in the mathematical statistics development is appeared the created mathematical theory of experiments as a new, to some extent, autonomous statistical domain. The theory of experiments has demonstrated exclusively importance for the investigation of the complex more-factorial processes in the chemistry, mineral processing, metallurgy etc. The investigation by the enrichment processes of the valuable raw materials and their management is possible by the statistical method application. In the same time, it&apos;s possible to use the wide-spread traditional methods of the statistical analysis, such as the methods of the dispersion, correlation, regression etc. Also, it may be mentioned above all the methods of the statistical planning of the extreme experiments. The more perspective are representatived some cybernetic methods which are based by the probability as an approach in the process analysis, for example, the identify of the ways and forms, the graph application as an additional instrument in the correlation analysis, the dynamic programming etc. The mathematical statistics application in the laboratory investigation scale is connected above all by the experimented material analysis and the compact representation of the obtained results. The mathematical statistics methods are more varrying and may be applied in the investigations of the wide circle of problems

The standard free energy of ReS2 has been measured in the range of 1050° to 1250°K using H2/H2S mixtures and a slight variation of the method described by Hager and Elliott.1 The result is: The experimental method and apparatus were modified slightly for this study. Measurements on Cu2S were made to verify the application of the method to the work on ReS2. THE EXPERIMENTS AND RESULTS Briefly, the experimental method consisted of exposing a chip of copper or rhenium at a known temperature for 8 hr to a slowly flowing gas stream at the same temperature in which Ph2S and PH2 were known. The chip was withdrawn quickly from the hot furnace, and subsequently it was inspected for the presence of a sulfided surface. In the experiments described here, there was no ambiguity in any case as to the presence or the absence of the sulfide. At a given temperature, gas compositions for sulfidization were explored systematically until two compositions were found whose values of ?G°, Eqs. [I] and [2], were within approximately 100 cal of each other, one of which was sulfi-dizing and the other was not. These are termed the "straddle" compositions and it is assumed that the equilibrium composition lies between them. The chief modification to the apparatus, which is shown schematically in Fig. 1 of Ref. 1, was to support the metal specimen on a small alumina boat which could be moved along the reaction tube, 6 mm ID, by platinum wires. An appropriate seal at each end of the reaction tube permitted the sample to be moved from the cold end of the tube into the hot zone in 2 to 3 sec, and the sample could be withdrawn equally rapidly. Thus, it was possible essentially to quench the specimen from the reaction temperature with the reaction gas or helium flowing and without danger of breaking the reaction tube. The usual practice at the end of the experiment was to switch the gas system to the helium tank, flood the reaction chamber with helium, and pull the sample out of the hot zone. The purpose of the modification was to permit study of the sulfidization of copper without the complication of the back-reaction between the gas and the specimen as the latter cooled during slow withdrawal of it from the hot zone; this was a problem in the earlier work.&apos; A further improvement located the tip of the temperature-indieating thermocouple and the specimen precisely at the hottest part of the furnace. A carefully calibrated thermocouple, with its tip at the position of the specimen and with other conditions duplicating those of an actual experiment, showed that in the temperature range of 900° to 1122°C the temperature of the specimen differed from that of the tip of the indicating thermocouple by less than 0.5°C. The two positions were 0.5 cm apart. The reaction gas was prepared from ultrahigh-purity hydrogen (<l ppm O2, <0.5 ppm H2O) and CP grade hydrogen sulfide (99.5 pct H2S). High-purity helium (99.995 pct He) was used. All of these gases were purchased from the Matheson Co. All flow meters were recalibrated by the soap-bubble method with hydrogen, H2S, helium, and several gas compositions used during the study. These calibrations gave a linear relationship with a slope of 1.0 for the plot of log flow rate vs log pressure drop across the flow meter, in accordance with the Hagen-Poiseuille equation. The analysis of the gas was determined in the same manner as was reported previously. Good checks were obtained between the composition of the gas established by the flow-meter settings and by chemical analysis of the gas taken after the mixing bulb and ahead of the furnace. The pressures of H2S, H2, S2, and HS in the equilibrium gas at temperature were calculated from the following data :3 The pressures of the species S and S8 were negligible for the conditions of the experiments.3 There was no sign of vaporization of ReS2 either by weight loss or deposits in the reaction tube. Thus it is not possible to account for the apparent volatility of the compound reported by Juza and Biltz.2 The inlet gas composition and the calculated equilibrium ratio of PH2 S/PH2 for the "straddle" points of each experiment are shown in Table I. The specimens of metal for the experiment were small clippings of annealed copper (99.9+ pct) sheet 0.005 in. thick that was obtained from Baker and Adamson and of "high-purity" rhenium (99.9+ pct) sheet 0.005 in. thick that was purchased from Chase Brass and Copper Co. A specimen was removed from the apparatus; inspected for the presence of the sulfide, and then stored in a sealed vial. A fresh clipping was used in each measurement. The condition of the surface of each specimen after the experiment is noted in Table I.

Discussion M. J. Martinson* (Associate Member): This is another interesting paper in the series which the Human Sciences Laboratory is publishing on the physiological cost of the more strenuous manual tasks performed underground. As a mining engineer-albeit presently an academic one -this contributor is more concerned with the practical significance of the study in the field of stope cleaning than with physiological niceties, but before discussing some of the practical issues raised by the paper perhaps the authors would care to reply to lay comment on three physiological matters. Firstly, in two places the authors make statements to the effect that the maximum oxygen intake of &apos;average&apos; (sic) Bantu mine workers is 3.0 l/min. What do the authors mean by &apos;average&apos;? Maximum oxygen intake in the individual is probably some function of inter alia age, physical fitness, state of health, ambient partial pressure of oxygen, diurnal and/or seasonal changes in metabolism, and possibly cumulative exposure to dust and other occupational contaminants. Since maximum oxygen intake is apparently such an important quality in manual labourers we ought to have a clear picture of its distribution in the entire labour force, and also know precisely how the individual&apos;s quantum is affected by factors such as those mentioned above. Secondly, arising out of the same statements and ignoring the reservation implicit in the previous paragraph, is it correct to say that the &apos;average&apos; Bantu mine worker has a maximum intake of 3.0 l/min? In the August 1966 issue of the South African Journal of Science four of the present co-authors reported the mean maximum oxygen intake of a random sample of 338 Bantu recruits of different tribes to be 2.63 l/min with a standard deviation of 0.542 l/min, and these figures were repeated in a paper published in the November 1968 issue of this Journal. Admittedly the mean maximum oxygen intake of the six subjects used in the present study was 3.05 l/min, but since they were selected on the grounds of previous shovelling experience they can hardly be regarded as being &apos;average&apos; recruits. Thirdly, it seems to me that the authors are perhaps a little uncritical in their acceptance of the &apos;50 per cent of maximum oxygen intake&apos; level of activity for endurance work. I am not unmindful of the evidence upon which this level is based, but I suggest that the evidence is at best tenuous and that the whole topic of fatigue and &apos;optimum&apos; levels of productivity under conditions of high muscular activity and considerable psychological stress is a lot more complicated than would appear from the authors&apos; ready acceptance of the 50 per cent level. Under present working conditions the question is largely rhetorical because it would need an army of supervisors to ensure that all members of a typical gang work at &apos;optimum&apos; levels throughout the shift, but if individual performance should ever become more readily determinable the issue might become crucial to management and malayisha alike. So much for physiological matters; now a few random thoughts on some wider, practical issues raised by the paper. In the paragraph headed Material the statement is made that &apos;The mixture (of fine, medium-sized and bigger rocks) was considered to be representative of an average underground rock sample&apos;. Elsewhere in the report the authors specifically draw attention to the effect of particle size on the oxygen consumption of men shovelling graded material, and intuitively one imagines that the size distribution of the material being shovelled would be highly significant in a study such as this. Presumably the authors were forced to assess size distribution subjectively because of the lack of objective data on the subject, and possibly the necessity for this assumption highlights how little we know quantitatively about any of the variables in stope cleaning systems. In this connection it may be remarked that although the present study was largely designed to show how dip and stoping width effect energy expenditure in shovelling, no data are given-nor, probably, are they available-to show how the industry&apos;s stoping tonnage is distributed in terms of these two factors. It seems to me that if the mining industry seriously hopes to improve stope productivity it must start by measuring the basic variables in existing systems. Elaborating somewhat on the previous paragraph, there also seems to be a tremendous gap between the present study-and its predecessors-and the prospect of gainfully using the information so carefully garnered by the authors. It would be reassuring to hear from the authors that their work on the physiological aspects is being integrated in some master plan for increasing productivity of manual labour. This I fear is not the case, and if productivity has changed at all in recent years I would hazard a guess that the change has been brought about by random factors rather than by systematic engineering design. The Human Sciences Laboratory has worked extensively in stopes in the past, and possibly the time has come when it should widen the ambit of its operations to include engineering-type analyses of cleaning systems, with particular emphasis on the economics of rapid cleaning by manual labour. Perhaps experiments could be conducted with stakhanovite-type gangs consisting of men selected for their high maximum oxygen intake and superior motivation; these men might be offered special incentives in the shape of extra pay

When we speak of high copper on a lead blast furnace we think in terms of 4 to 5 pct, or. any lead charge carrying over 1 pct. Any copper on charge will produce its corresponding troubles such as lead well, extra slag losses, drossing problems, and the working up of the dross. This is indeed a very interesting subject and one that used to give the old-time lead metallurgists such as Eiler, Hahn and lles many worries, not so much in the actual operation of the hlast furnace but in the working up of the copper. When the American nletallurgists commenced with the American rectangular-shaped lead blast furnace in the 1870&apos;s and got away from the reverberatories such as were in use in Germany and other parts of the world, they went to greater tonnages, as 80 to 100 tons per day in comparison to the 20 to 30 tons per day in the other processes. With the greater tonnages along with insuficient settling capacity, the silver losses in some cases were increased. Hence the lead-fall was low, for there were no leady concentrates in those days to assist the metallurgist to gain lead or an absorber for the precious metals; and in some cases copper sulphides were added intentionally to the charge to produce a copper matte to lessen the silver losses through the dump slag. The operators in those days thought that where some copper was always present in the lead ores the copper should not enter into the reduced lead and alloy with it. This, by the way, is just the reverse of our present-day practice, when we try to put all of the copper into the blast furnace lead and to remove the same through the drossing kettles. Therefore the furnace was operated to produce a certain amount of matte or artificial sulphides, since, due to the great affinity of copper for sulphur, any copper present would enter the matte almost completely. Thus, the lead bullion produced was practically free from copper. The products of the furnace were metallic lead or lead bullion, containing 05 to 95 pct of the lead and about 96 pct of the silver which were in the ore—a lead-copper-iron matte which contained nearly all the copper in the ore and the slag, the waste product. In the United States, up through the year 1092, we find the small furnace 100 X 32 1/2 in. with 12 tuyeres, some 6 on each side, plagued with a small amount of poorly roasted sulphides— either from heap or hand roasters that produced matte. This matte was roasted and if poor in copper was returned for the ore smelting. Otherwise it was smelted either alone or with additions of rich slags or argentiferous copper ores, the products being lead and a highly cupriferous matte, the latter being subsequently worked up for its copper. The lead metallurgists kept trying and improving on furnace and roasting equipment designs until we find blalvin W. Iles constructing at the old Globe Plant at Denver what came to be the modern furnace. That is, in 1900 he built a furnace of 42 in. width by 140 in. at the tuyeres with a 10 in. bosh and a 16-ft ore column. This type has been more or less standard to the present time, though modified in width and length to meet the demand for large tonnages and improvements in structural details. In 1905 at Cananea, Mexico, Dwight and Lloyd developed the present down-draft sinter machine that has meant so much in producing a well-processed material for the lead blast furnace. In 1912 Guy C. Riddell came forth with double roasting at the East Helena Plant of the American Smelting and Refining Co., which removed the "zinc mush plague." Incidentally, with the introduction of double roasting, which most lead plants were forced into after 1924, when lead flotation came into its own, less matte or no matte was produced. When this stage arrived, the copper was forced into the dross and the casting of lead at the blast furnace lead-wells was stopped. In plants with a fair copper carry 1 pct or better on the blast furnace charge, the lead wells became inoperative once the production of matte stopped. The copper drosses clogged the lead wells and even with bombing, either water or dynamite, the operators could not keep them open. Thus, the lead wells were abandoned in some plants, such as at the El Paso and Chihuahua smelters of the American Smelting and Refinillg Co., and all lead taken out through the first settlers. The elimination of sulphur, espccially sulphide sulphur, from the blast furnace charge and the nonproductiori of matte resulted in a great saving of tinie, energy and equipment in the recirculation of the copper, With the copper content in the dross and dross-fall ranging in quantities from a few percent up to 60 pct, such as at El Paso, a drossing problem was created. As the old-time operators hated dross and buried the same in the shipping bullion, the modern metallurgists from 1925 on decided that with increasing dross-falls they would have to adopt the lead refiner&apos;s ideas of drossing kettles with subsequent treatment of the lead with a sulphur addition to have the shipping lead of 0.01

As the outcrop mines in the West developed into underground operations, systems of ground support were gradually evolved. In the early coal mines there was little need for support except near the dirt line in portals, where stone masonry was common. Where the top was shaley or broken, native pine props with light cross bars and legs furnished enough support even in Utah&apos;s 25-ft coal seams. As depth of workings increased. roofs and backs of the same general nature as those near the surface became more and more unstable and required more and more support. Some coal airways show this tendency very clearly. From the surface down the same type of roof shows deterioration which an experienced eye can translate into a measure of depth under surface rather than change in rock characteristics. Rock bolts, developed by various companies and by the U. S. Bureau of Mines, have become an effective substitute for timber in sections of some metal and nonmetal mines formerly requiring escessive timber support, and further use of war surplus landing mats, chain link fencing, and a new punched channel developed by one of the steel companies has enabled other mines to operate deposits where costs of timber and lack of clearance for timber support would have prohibited mining. The block caving mines have made extensive use of reinforced concrete underground to achieve similar ends under difficult conditions. Steel sets are standard in many Bureau of Reclamation projects, although these are usually covered in with concrete to make the permanent structures the Bureau&apos;s reclamation projects require. But the use of steel in mining operations is limited and has been confined principally to the iron ore mines of Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. Some mines have installed used rail as posts, caps, and crossbars, but a rail section is not suited for load carrying, and used rails are generally brittle. having a tendency to fail without warning when overloaded. European mines were the first to reach the size of worked out areas and depths of cover resulting in major roof problems. The Europeans resorted to pack walls and masonry walls, in conjunction with timber arched sets. rail arches, and combination timber and rail and steel arches. The give in these pack walls and wooden blocking was supplemented by a hinge in the center of the arch. This design is called an articulated arch Through various refinements of this principle of the support giving graduallv with the load. Toussaint-Heintzmann developed the yielding or sliding arches, in which yield is accomplished by friction in the overlapping joints of the arch. This type has gained widespread acceptance in the Ruhr and Lorraine Basin and is being manufactured by Bethlehem Steel for sale in this country. In North America the anthracite mines in Pennsylvania, followed by certain iron ore mines in upper Michigan and Canada, were the first to employ these arches to any extent. The practice was later adopted by Kennecott at Ruth, Nev., and by others. Despite high initial cost, the use of these arches is growing in many parts of the country because of their suitability in heavy ground. In its present form of manufacture the yield-able arch consists of open U-shaped rolled section with heavy beads on the edge. The open edge of the U is placed toward the wall. The section nests in another section of the same dimensions, and an arch can be built up from rolled radii and tangents of various weights and lengths. Sections are fastened together by U bolts and saddles. The lap on the joint varies from 12 to 24 in., and ordinarily the bolts are tightened with a 1-in. drive air wrench. The arches are spaced with channel struts held by J bolts and saddles. Sections can also be obtained that are composed of various combinations of radii and tangents and true circles. The joints can be placed to bear against anticipated loads and asymmetrical loads imposed by dipping strata. In the arches now being manufactured clearance widths up to 19 ft are obtainable in weights of sections from 9 to 30 lb per ft. The circular cross sections are available in the same weights ranging from 8 to 16 ft diam. At present most of the arches sold are supplied only in carload lots. It is hoped that demand will grow so that distributors can stock various weights and sections to give small operators a chance to try this new type of rock support under their own particular conditions. Several excellent papers have discussed the properties of various sections now manufactured, the dimensions of the sets obtainable, and their application under widely differing conditions. The present article will describe the methods and results of a special use of the arches at Kaiser Steel mine No. 3. Sunnyside, Utah. Problem at Mine No. 3 : In 1953 Kaiser Steel Corp. laid out Sunnyside mine No. 3 to recover coking coal left by the previous operator, Utah Fuel Co.. below workings that had been abandoned in 1928. Two seams had been worked, the upper and lower, separated by 30 to 42 ft of rock. Approximately 10 million tons of coal had been extracted from this area some 3000 ft down the itch from the outcrop to a 1500-ft depth of cover. INTRODUCTION The requirement that is placed on owners and operators of underground mines to protect workers against the health hazard of inhaling radioactive materials which are short-lived decay products of 222Rn can be satisfied by applying a considerable variety of what we may call "engineering" solutions as well as a number of "administrative" remedies to the problem. The most obvious of the "engineering" approaches has always been that of forced ventilation, in which relatively clean (i.e., radon-free) air from aboveground is drawn or pushed through the mine workings by a system of fans and ducts. This relatively clean air, in sweeping through the drifts, stopes and haulageways, dilutes the radon and radon-daughter concentrations in the air of the mine, and performs the added beneficial function of removing the daughter-mixture quickly enought to limit grow-in of the longer-lived nuclides in the group that make up the "toxic trio" on which the Working Level (IM) unit is based. Effective as the dilution-ventilation method is for control of WL in most underground mining situations, however, the increasing strictness of control measures that have been imposed on the mining industry over the last two decades have demanded measures of even greater effectiveness. In times of poor markets for yellow-cake and other products of the mines, mine operators are pressed to reduce operating costs, and the installation of additional primary ventilation capacity can be a severe burden on a mine that is already laboring under an unfavorable earning power. When traditional dilution-ventilation systems alone cannot meet the requirement for WI, control, radiation safety engineers and ventilation engineers begin to look at alternatives and auxiliary methods. Since the radon which produces the toxic daughter products originates in the rock of the mine walls, and since, in most United States mines, that rock is a porous sandstone through which air can move under the effect of atmospheric pressure gradients, and through which radon can diffuse relatively freely, one way to help control the growth of WL would be to hinder the escape of radon from that reservior of porous rock. An appealing; method for hindering that natural flux of radon-polluted air from the walls of the mine has long been apparent; namely, to apply a low-permeability coating over the surface of the rock, thus sealing the radon in place and, in theory at least, preventing its escape into the mine air. Our 1970 report to the U.S. Federal Radiation Council on the subject of cost impacts of proposed changes in the occupational standards for exposure of underground uranium miners to airborne radon daughters noted the possibility of using polymeric wall sealants as a means of controlling radon-pollution of mine air. Since that time a number of reports have appeared in the technical literature advocating this technique for restraining the escape of radon from building materials, mill tailings, and other materials containing 226Ra, in addition to the surfaces of underground mine workings. During this period, some controversy has occurred over the question of the probable effectiveness of wall sealants in limiting the escape of radon from the rock. Our 1970 report speculated that flaws (cracks and "pinholes") in the coating might be all but unavoidable in practice, and that even a conservative estimate of the frequency of such flaws would lead to a prediction of ineffectiveness. Hammon et al, in a laboratory evaluation of radon sealants conducted by Lawrence Livermore Laboratory of the University of California in 1975 on behalf of U.S. Bureau of Mines, concluded that a wide variety of polymeric coatings would provide "nearly 100% effectiveness" in restrain¬ing escape of radon from mine wall surfaces if applied in "thicknesses between 5 and 10 mil" (125-250 [y]pm). John Franklin and co-workers at the U.S. Bureau of Mines laboratories in Spokane, Washington, have carried the experiments with polymeric sealants through additional laboratory tests and into actual mine environments, reporting that selected sealants could provide attenuation of radon flux by a factor of four (75-80% reduction). Robert Bates and John Edwards of USBM developed a computer-assisted mathematical/physical model that predicts a relatively small effect of flaws in a low-permeability coating on the radon flux from a sandstone-type matrix. FIELD TEST Since all actual experimental work with wall sealants showed some beneficial effect on radon attenuation (even if not as exciting as the "nearly 100%" predicted by Hammon), USBM was encouraged to extend its evaluation to an actual operating uranium mine, and awarded a contract for that work to Arthur D. Little, Inc. in September 1979. We were fortunate in obtaining the voluntary cooperation of Atlas Minerals Division of Atlas Corp., who operate a mill and several underground mines in and around Moab, Utah. Atlas made available for our use a small T-shaped drift in their Pandora Mine in LaSal, Utah, and provided space for instrumentation and recordkeeping by our field crew in a surface building near the mine entry. Atlas also provided electricity and water to the test site, together with assistance in establishing necessary ventilation, removing rubble from the site, conducting periodic WL surveys and furnishing auxiliary man-power for the heavy hard work of coating the walls with gunite prior to application of the polymeric sealant.
