Introduction Heavy media separation (HMS), also called dense media or float¬sink separation, is one of the newer forms of gravity concentration. Though the concept can be traced to the last century, the process has enjoyed its major growth since 1940. Heavy liquid separation is a mutation. The heavy media process is used extensively to clean coal and for the concentration of a wide variety of ores such as those of iron, lead-zinc, chrome, manganese, tin, tungsten, fluorspar, magnesite, sylvite, garnet, diamonds, gravel, etc. It may be used where ever a significant density difference occurs between two minerals, and commercial separations are typically made in the range of 1.3 to 3.8 sp gr. The particle size treated ranges downward from 6-8 in. top size. Particles greater than about 1/16-in. (10 mesh) may be treated in a "static" bath, though for reasons of separation efficiency, + 1/2 -in- feed is usually preferred. For particles less than this size, separation in a heavy media cyclone is generally used. The flowsheet of a typical heavy media process, in this case one using a ferrous medium, is shown in Fig. I. In essence, the process consists of: (1) preparation of the feed usually by wet screening to remove undesired fines, (2) heavy medium separation, and (3) removal and recovery of the medium from the separated products. Many muta¬tions of the basic scheme are possible and numerous options are possi¬ble. HMS offers the following potential advantages:12 1) Ability to make sharp separations. 2) Ability to change the specific gravity of separation quickly to meet changing conditions. 3) Ability to remove products continuously. 4) Ability to treat a broad size range of products. 5) Ease of start-up and shutdown without loss of separating efficiency. 6) Relatively low medium cost and low media losses. 7) Low operating and maintenance costs. 8) High capacity with the use of relatively little floor space. 9) Relatively low capital investment per ton of capacity. The process may be used to produce a finished concentrate, two finished concentrates, or a concentrate and a middling of differing quality, or a preconcentrate by rejection of unwanted gangue. It is an ideal method for the reprocessing of coarse waste dumps. The greatest use for the process lies in coal cleaning and in the preconcentration of ores. The relatively inexpensive heavy media process may be used advantageously to reject large quantities of coarsely crushed gangue. When used in this way, the process will allow: (1) the use of lower cost but less selective mining methods with the "overbreak" material being removed at the front end of the concentrator or preparation plant; (2) a substantial reduction in the quantity of ore that must be finely ground for subsequent mineral liberation and separa¬tion. Since comminution is often the single most expensive step in beneficiation, it is desirable to eliminate as many essentially barren pieces of rock as possible before the grinding step, (3) a decrease in overall plant capital cost per ton of concentrate since the size of the plant from the dense medium step onward will be smaller. Several general references are available,12-18 though much of the technical data on the process is widely scattered in the general litera¬ture. Heavy Liquid Separation Organic Liquids Given sufficient settling time, it is possible to make a perfect separa¬tion between two particles of differing density by placing them in a liquid whose density is intermediate between the two. This means of achieving a perfect separation has proven to be elusive because of problems in feed preparation, particle settling rates, operational considerations, and economic constraints. There are a wide variety of heavy liquids that could be used, most of them halogenated hydrocarbons, and a few typical examples are given in Table 4. These liquids are most commonly used in ore dressing for the laboratory fractionation of ore particles on the basis of specific gravity. Laboratory Separations. Using liquids typified by those given in Table 4, separations are made to develop either the standard washability curves used to estimate the response of a given sample to gravity concentration or to prepare a partition curve to evaluate the effective¬ness of a given gravity separation process or piece of equipment. A typical washability curve is given in Fig. 2.19 Such curves are generated for raw coal, e.g., by treating either the whole or various size fractions of the sample in a series of heavy liquids and analyzing the various specific gravity fractions so produced. The procedure is relatively simple for coal samples because of the ready availability of a wide variety of relatively low cost heavy liquids in the density range 1.2¬-2.0. For ores the problem is much more complicated, because only a few high density liquids, all of rather high cost, are available. Parti¬tion curves are generated in the same manner by treating the separated products in the same liquids. Greater details on the procedures to be used in heavy liquid separa¬tions are to be found in the literature (for coal, Refs. 13, 14 and 19 and for ore, Refs. 20 and 21). For testing coal, calcium and zinc chloride solutions have been used extensively in the past, though today halogenated hydrocarbons (available under the trade name Certigrav) are the preferred media. Many differences can be imagined between gas-oil flow in which the gas is supplied at the face of the core and gas-oil flow in which the flowing gas was originally dissolved in the oil. If capillary pressure characteristics and flow requirements control gas saturation distribution, the gas would be expected to be located at preferred sites within the porous medium as determined by pore sizes. On the other hand, during solution gas drive the gas first appears as bubbles through a nuclea-tion process. Nothing in self-nucleation theory specifies at which sites the first bubbles should be formed. In all probability they will be randomly distributed throughout the porous medium. Furthermore, it is not at all certain that even at low rates of production the gas will redistribute itself after nucleation to the channels normally occupied by gas in simple gas flow. Stewart, et at, have shown that at least for some limestone samples, oil recoveries could not be predicted for all rates of production using any one set of relative gas and oil permeabilities. An important factor in controlling recoveries during solution gas drive was the rate of bubble formation, higher rates giving higher recoveries. Stewart, et al, attributed the increase in recovery to a better distribution of the gas phase in heterogeneous limestone samples than is obtained by simple external gas drive. Differences in recovery from these causes were not reported for sandstone cores. In the experiments to be reported here, oil recovery, pressure and producing GOR history were measured during solution gas drive for a 5-ft sandstone core. The results were compared with predictions from the Muskat method for computing solution gas-drive behavior using external gas-drive relative permeability. The effects of changing the rate of production and oil viscosity were studied. At high laboratory rates of average pressure decline, two observations were made which would not have been predicted by Muskat's depletion theory: (1) oil recovery increased with increasing rate of production for a given viscosity oil, and (2) oil recovery increased with increasing oil viscosity for a given high rate of production. Both of these observations are explained as consequences of diffusion control of gas saturations superimposed on the normal gas-oil flow requirements, Fur- thermore, discontinuous gas phase flow appears to be significant during solution gas drive. The laboratory tests were performed at rates of average pressure decline many times greater than the maximum possible rate of average pressure decline in an actual oil field. It is, therefore, not possible to draw any direct conclusions regarding the effect of rate on recovery for the solution gas-drive mechanism under actual field conditions. However, at the lower laboratory rates, recoveries were nearly independent of rate and could be predicted by the Muskat method, using external gas-drive relative permeability data. These results suggest that at normal oilfield rates the effect of rate on recovery for the solution gas-drive mechanism is negligible. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The core material for the pressure depletion studies was Bandera sandstone from an outcrop in the Mid-Continent. This sandstone was selected because of its low permeability (about 10 md), which would permit the development of substantial pressure gradients in the corn at moderate flow rates. The core was 5-ft long and 2-in. in diameter. Its properties are listed in Table 1. Relative gas-to-oil permeability ratios were measured by an external gas-drive method2. The results are shown for a short 2-in. core and for the 5-ft core in Fig. 8. Oils used in the pressure depletion experiments were kerosene and a highly refined white oil (standard white oil No. 3) with gas-free viscosities of 1.8 and 25 cp, respectively. The gas was a naturally occurring methane from Gough field, Inglewood, Calif. The oil viscosities, gas solubilities and formation volume factors are plotted as functions of pressure at 75°F in Figs. 1 and 2. Methane viscosities and compressibilities were obtained from the literature"'. A core mounting was required which could withstand up to 2,500 psi internal pressure. Various techniques are proposed to overcome the deficiencies, many of which have been tested. The techniques in general involve the combined application of pit optimization and blend optimization techniques.

As mining operations become larger and more complex, larger volumes of geological, geophysical, and production data must be manipulated and interpreted on a day-to-day basis. Because of the large volume of data, more sophisticated data storage strategies, interpretation tools, and visualisation tools must be used by exploration and mining operations in order to remain competitive. Critical to better practice is an understanding of the basic syntax and character of geological and mining data, expressed in the form of a data model. In the short-term, a data model can be used to implement or evaluate schemes for data storage or exchange. It can be used to evaluate software. In the longer term, a data model is essential to the design of the next generation of software for 3D geological modelling. In this and the related paper (Lin et al, 1995) the data model in use by CSIRO is presented, together with: 1. examples of the use of data transfer in the linkage of existing mining software; and 2. examples of the use of the data model in software design.

RESERVE Mining Co., owned jointly, by Armco Steel Corp. and Republic Steel Corp., controls 9% miles of magnetic taconite ore on the eastern end of the Mesabi Range lying between Mesaba and Birch Lake. The ore reserve which can be mined by open pit methods is conservatively estimated at 1.5 billion tons under a shallow, loose overburden requiring no rock stripping. Taconite now being mined is in the upper cherty horizon. It has been metamorphosed by the intrusion of gabbro and most of the iron oxide is altered to magnetite. The nonmagnetic portion of the iron is practically all in the form of silicate. The magnetic iron is finely disseminated through the rock and requires grinding -150 mesh for clean liberation of the iron oxide from the gangue.

Thiourea is being applied as an industrial leaching agent for gold and silver only in a few cases. A CIP technique was developed which eliminates most of the obstacles against its use. Mild conditions for precious metals stripping from the loaded carbon simplifies process conditions in comparison to cyanide CIP technique. Examples are given.

The use of carbon for the recovery of the gold dissolved in cyanide leaching began with a pilot unit at Barberton in 1977. This was quickly followed by larger scale plants at Modderfontein (1978), President Brand (calcine 1980), Western Areas (filter tails 1980) and Beisa (primary ore 1981) and has grown to become the preferred process. There are currently 34 operations that use the carbon in pulp/leach process which accounts for 35 percent of South Africa's gold production. The size of individual plant varies over a wide range.

Cameroon continued to enjoy sustained economic growth that began with its independence in 1960. Growth in the gross domestic product (GDP) averaged 2.8% per year during the 1960's and the first half of the 1970's. Starting in 1976 and for the succeeding 10 years, the GDP accelerated rapidly owing to the coming on-stream of Cameroon's small but domestically significant offshore oil industry. In 1985, the GDP grew by 7.8%, but in 1986, it was only up 5.5%. The country's sustained economic growth in dollar terms of gross national product (GNP) per capita reached $1,075 in 1986. The ranking in GNP per capita by the International Monetary Fund put Cameroon in the middle-income category for developing countries. The sustained economic growth rate up to 1986 was due to the injection of income from oil into the economy, but crude oil price reductions in 1986 brought a slowdown. In 1986, crude oil production grew to 200,000 barrels per day, an increase of 8.2% from that of 1985. Most of the oil came from the Société Nationale Elf Aquitaine (SNEA) wells in the multifield Rio del Rey complex. Additional output came from the Moudi Field operated by Compagnie Française des Pétroles S.A. Proven oil reserves in Cameroon were 540 million barrels. At 1986 production rates, and in the absence of further discoveries, Cameroon will have exhausted its recoverable oil reserves by the year 1995. Owing to worldwide crude price reductions, the country's oil income fell 60% between 1985 and 1986, from $1.82 billion2 to $0.72 billion. Cameroon's refinery operator commenced operating the Sonara refinery in 1981 at Point Limboh. Sonara's capacity of 43,000 barrels per day was small by most standards. In 1986, natural gas reserves, estimated at 100 billion cubic meters, were not produced commercially because there were no domestic users. Proposals for a multibillion-dollar liquefied natural gas plant at Kribi had been submitted; however, work on the plant had not commenced.

The room-temperature microhardness of as-grown and annealed MoaC single crystals was measured on the (0001), {2110), and1012) planes using Knoop and Vickevs indenters at loads ranging front 25 to 1000 g. The orientatimz dependence of hardness with respect to crystal axes was also studied. The average random hardness of as-grown crystals was determined to be 1520 kg per sq nm. Annealing to 2000°C decreased. the average hardness by 150 units. An increase in hardness after annealing at 2200 ;C was noted. Optical and electron microscopy revealed slip and twin traces on all planes studied, as produced by mi-cvohavdness indentations. Basal (0001)(2i10) slip was determined to be the primary slip system and was substantiated by electron transmission microscopy. A secondary {1010)(2110) slip was produced by mi-crohardness indentations. The lattev also produced twinning- of the {10i2)[0001] type, as proven by electron diffraction. Electrical resistivity and elastic-modulus anisotropy were found and correlated with hardness anisotropy and Mo2C crystal structure. Elastic-modulus values were obtained by microhard-uess and ullrasonic methods. Bonding mechanism of Mo2C is discussed. ROOM-TEMPERATURE microhardness indentations are useful for studying hardness anisotropy, slip, and twinning in brittle materials. Slip has previously been produced in this manner in and WS~~.~ Recently, the authors5 reported slip of the {10i0)(11~0) type produced by high pressure and microhardness indentations on hexagonal TiBz (c/a = 1.066) single and polycrystals. This slip system was also reported by French and ~homas' and Taka-hashi and ~reise~ for hexagonal WC (c/a = 0.976) crystals. These results suggest that prismatic rather than basal slip is favored in hexagonal nonmetallic materials having a c/a ratio considerably less than the ideal (1.633). Buerger precession and cylindrical X-ray rotation patterns were previously' taken on cleaved sections of the Mo2C single crystals studied in this work. Th~y were found to be hexagonal MoaC with a. = 3.0233A, co = 4.7344A, and C/O = 1.5660. The latter ratio is close to that of the beryllium metal (c/a = 1.57), which slips primarily on the (0001) plane: but also slips on the (1010) planes.'0 ~irconium" (c/u = 1.59) and titanium12 (c/o = 1.59) deform mainly by slip on nonbasal planes which contain a close-packed direction. This is due to the fact that for these two metals the initial resolved shear stress for slip on the (10i0) prismatic planes is lower than that on the (0001) plane. The prominence of basal rather than prismatic slip in metals of high c/o ratios is shown by cadmium (c/a = 1.89), zinc (c/a = 1.86), and magnesium (c/a = 1.62) which deform mainly by basal slip. However, in case of the latter, by stressing magnesium crystals in tension or compression parallel to the basal plane, slip on (10i0) planes can also be produced.13 Several hardness values for polycrystalline Mo2C are reported in the literature: Biickle ' and Samsonov'~ give a value of 1800 and 1479 kg per sq mm, respectively, at a 100-g load; and Kieffer and Benesovsk~'~ report a value of 1950 kg per sq mm at a 50-g load. ~ott'~ reports a Vickers hardness value of 2000 kg per sq mm, with the load unspecified. A Rockwell A hardness value of RA = 88 has also been reported.'' In the present work, for comparison with single-crystal Mo2C hardness values, a Khnloo value of 1600 It 150 kg per sq mm was found on 99.6 pct pure and 99 pct dense hot-pressed Mo2C. This work was undertaken partly to explain the considerable differences in hardness values reported for polycrystalline Mo2C. EXPERIMENTAL The Mo2C single crystals investigated were prepared by a Verneuil-type process using an electric arc by the Linde Co. of the Union Carbide Corp.lg The largest specimens grown were boules 7 mm in diam by 40 mm in length. The crystals had an average density of 9.04 g per cu cm, with a Mo + C content of 99.8 wt pct. The major impurities were: 100 ppm each Na, Zr, and Ca; 85 ppm 0, 55 ppm Fe, and 10 ppm each Cr and Ta. The crystals were found to be carbon-poor, the average carbon content being 5.73 wt pct (stoichiometric value is 5.89 pct). The molybdenum content was found to be 94.08 pct, which is nearly stoichiometric. Electron-microprobe traverses of selected specimens were done with a Phillips-AMR microanalyzer. Thin-film and carbon replicas were used to prepare electron micrographs. This work was done with a JEM-6A electron microscope. Prior to optical and electron-optical studies, specimens were mounted in Lucite and polished on a vibratory polisher using diamond-paste grades ranging from 9-1 p and Linde A powder for up to 48 hr. Dilute nitric acid was used for thin-section polishing and chemical etching for 1-15 min. Electrical-resistivity measurements at room temperature were taken with a Rubicon bridge, using gold contacts. For hardness measurements, a Tukon Microhardness Tester Type FB with Knoop and Vickers indenters was used. Measurements were taken at loads ranging from 25 to 1000 g; however, the 100-g load was chosen as the standard load. All measurements were taken at room temperature. Indentations of cracking classes 1 and 2 only were considered for hardness determinations.20)21 (There are six cracking classes, ranging from "class 1" for a perfect inden-

INTRODUCTION Radon-222 is an inert, radioactive gas formed by the radioactive decay of radium-226, a long-lived member of the uranium-238 decay chain. Radium is present in varying amounts in virtually all soils and, on the average, about 36,000 pCi (1330 Bq) of radon per square meter of soil diffuse into the atmosphere each day (UN 1977). Radon decays with a half-life of 3.6 days through four short-lived daughters to lead210 and it is these short-lived daughters[ [Ra A, (218Po, t, = 3.0 min) , Ra B, (214 Pb, t;, = 27 min), Ra C, (214Bi, t] = 20 min) and Ra C1 (214Po, t] = 2.5 x 10-6 min)] ]which cause the major health hazard associated with radon (Bale 1951). Atoms of these daughters, either unattached or attached to the ever-present particles in air, are deposited on the surfaces of the respiratory tract; alpha particles emitted in their decay can result in large doses to the cells of the bronchial epithelium lining the respiratory tract. These daughters will be present in air in varying relative concentrations depending on the "age" of the air (time since radon emanated into it) and on the amount of mixing of radon and radon daughter contaminated air with clean air. [The practical unit developed to quantify the amount of radon daughters in air is the Working Level (WL). This unit was historically related to the equilibrium concentration of 100 pCi (3.7 Bq) of the short-lived daughters of radon in one liter of air (cf. Holaday 1969) and is defined as any mixture of the short-lived daughters in a liter of air that have a-potential alpha energy of 1.3 x 105 Mev (2.08 x 10-5J) in their decay to lead-210. The working level month (WLM) was developed along with the WL, and was defined as an exposure to one WL for a working month (170 h). This is equivalent to 2.2 x 107 MeV•h•L-1 (3.54 x 10-3 J.h.m-3). If the average breathing rate is taken as 1.2 m3.h•1 (ICRP 1975), then one WLM is equivalent to inhalation of 4.24 mJ of potential alpha energy.] It is now generally agreed that the inhalation of radon daughters is the major potential radiation hazard in uranium mining, and contributes a substantial fraction to the natural radiation exposure of the general population due to the accumulation of radon and radon daughters from natural sources in buildings. Radon daughter concentrations in modern mines are controlled by ventilation, and by blocking off old working areas (cf. Simpson, 1959). However, before the hazard from radon daughters was recognized, considerably higher concentrations of radon daughters were present in some uranium and non-uranium mines. These high radon daughter concentrations resulted in an increase in lung cancers in the mining population, and it is these results that are our main source of information on the risk of inhaling radon daughters. HISTORICAL REVIEW Many excellent reviews of the history of understanding the health effects of inhalation of radon daughters are available (see, for example, Hueper 1942, Lorenz 1944, Sikl 1950, Stewart 1964, Holaday 1969, Lundin 1971, Cross 1979) but a brief summary of some of the highlights in this area may be of interest. [a] 1556: Agricola describes an unusual and fatal chest disease occurring among underground miners in the region of Schneeberg and Joachimsthal (Jachymov) in the Erz mountains in Central Europe. (It is of some historical interest to note that Agricola's book was translated from Latin into English by a mining engineer and his wife; the engineer later became President of the U.S.A.) [b] 1879: Haerting and Hesse indicated that the majority of deaths among Schneeberg miners were due to lung cancer; the lung cancers in these miners (who were incidentally not cigarette smokers) were observed twenty to fifty years after they began working in the mines. [c] 1896: Discovery of natural radioactivity by Becquerel, followed by discovery of radon by Dorn in 1900. [d] 1924: Ludewig and Lorenser report high concentrations (400 - 15000 pCi or 15 - 570 Bq per liter) of radon in the air in the Schneeberg mines and suggest that radon could be responsible for the high rate of lung cancer among miners. However, the reason why radon should cause lung cancer specifically was still not really understood up to twenty years later (Lorenz 1944). High concentrations of radon in the air in the Joachimsthal mines were reported by Behounek in 1927 and a high incidence of lung cancer among Joachimsthal miners (similar to that among miners at Schneeberg, which is only some 30 km distant but in a different political district) was noted at about the same time (Sikl 1930; cf. Sikl 1950). It is estimated that about half of the Joachimsthal miners died from lung cancer and about half from silicosis and tuberculosis (Sikl 1950). [e] 1930's and 1940's: Radioactive ores are deliberately mined in the U.S.A., Canada and other countries primarily as a source of radium for medical purposes and for luminescent dials; other radioactive ores are mined as a source of several non-radioactive minerals, while extensive uranium mining did not begin until the late 1940's. [f] 1940: Based on crude epidemiology and dose calculations, Evans and Goodman propose 10 pCi L-1 as a maximum permissible concentration of radon in continued human exposure. This is the first known recommended maximum permissible concentration for radon. This recommendation was adopted by the U.S. National Bureau of Standards in 1941 and reconfirmed in 1953. Driven piles are a common tool in any engineer’s toolbox for supporting large structures over very soft ground, especially in high seismic risk zones. Challenges include achieving sufficient vertical and lateral load capacities within the constraints of pile spacing and geologic conditions. This was the case for a project in Orange County, California with a state-of-the-art, $180 million plant for biosolids processing, biogas management and energy recovery located in marshland next to an existing waste water treatment plant. The new construction for the Irvine Ranch Water District included a 70-foot (21 m) tall building and three closely spaced, 90-foot (27 m) high, 65-foot (20 m) diameter, egg-shaped steel digester tanks. The lower 35-feet (11 m) of the tanks were constructed below ground level. The site was underlain by up to 45 feet (14 m) of highly compressible peat and organic clays with standard penetration test (SPT) blows as low as 2 blows/ft (30 cm). Some of the peat layers had measured in-situ dry densities of less than 30 pcf (480 kg/m3) with moisture contents of over 250 percent. The soft clays and peat were underlain by a dense layer of sand and gravel at depth. Groundwater was very shallow. While nearby sites were designated by others as seismic site class “D”, this site was clearly class “F” (SF) which required site specific seismic hazard and time history analyses. Six recorded time histories were selected from the 1994 Northridge, 1989 Loma Prieta (California) and 1999 Chi Chi (Taiwan) earthquakes for the ground motion analysis considering the magnitude of the earthquake, distance to the source, characteristics of the earthquake source (i.e. type of fault displacement), peak ground acceleration, local site geology, station type (i.e. free-field or small structure stations), and spectral content that was similar to the period range of interest. Following ASCE’s Guideline Document 7-05, a site-specific horizontal acceleration response spectra (ARS) was developed for the maximum credible earthquake (MCE) associated with the site.

"One of the most important methods for material testing is the characterization of the hardness, which is defined as the resistance of a material to the penetration of another one. The methods according to Brinell, Vickers, Rockwell and Knoop are today the most common and standardized tests for metal. As they are developed for predominantly ductile materials like steel, they can’t easily be applied to rocks which react much more brittle under indentation. But just as steel, rock is composed of different minerals and has a specific microstructure. Its mechanical parameters are connected with the particular grains, their cohesion and interlocking, just like steel.The abrasivity of rocks and the accompanied wear of drilling tools today are mainly determined by simple and fast laboratory tests such as the Cerchar abrasivity test or the rubber wheel test. Such laboratory tests are good tribological tests, but there are limits. The Cerchar abrasivity test for example has weaknesses in extreme cases, that mean soft or very hard rock types. This leads to an underestimation of abrasivity, e.g. in poorly lithified sandstones or very hard, fine grained and extremely abrasive rocks. As mentioned, hardness characterizes, depending on the type of deformation, predominantly plastic (metal) or elastic properties (rubber). Rocks are in the range between these two extremes. Since the rock drilling process can be seen as a kind of penetration process on macroscopic and microscopic scales, we picked up the idea to characterize the interaction of rock materials and TBM-disc-cutters with hardness tests. In addition, this supports for a better understanding of the wear process on disc cutters. We used the hardnessdisparity concept after Cardu & Giraudi (2012) because wear can be understood as the interaction between the wear part and the material which causes the wear (tribological system). Several rock-forming minerals and some fine to coarse-grained monomineralic and polymineralic rocks were tested. In contrast to Cardu & Giraudi, we used in the first step of investigations the method after Vickers with loads up to 294.2 N (HV 30), depending on the estimated hardness to get bigger indentations and therefore as well information about the cohesion and interlocking of the minerals/grains. We also tested several associated disc cutters. First results show that with higher loads (HV 5 - 30) and at least 15 indentations, we get a structural hardness in fine-grained rock samples, which allows a good characterization of the elasticity and brittleness. Nevertheless, for the coarse-grained rock samples we need up to 40 indentations for a good characterization. Using this method, a prediction of disc cutter wear is feasible taking into account the hardness of the disc cutter steel. In this paper, we would like to present this approved method in material sciences to derive an additional parameter for the characterization of rock abrasivity and wear."

A new logging method has been developed, based on measurement of the nuclear magnetism of formation fluids. The nuclear magnetism log (NML) is the only log that responds solely to formation fluids. It operates equally well in both oil-base and water-base muds and in empty holes, and can be used in all kinds of formations except strongly magnetic ones. Two separate NML measurements can be made, one of which provides a continuous formation fluid curve. This fluid curve is called the free fluid log (FFL) and is believed to indicate a minimum effective porosity in most formations. The FFL not only delineates fluid-containing zones, but provides an excellent correlation curve that can be obtained under conditions where conventional correlation logs are ineffective. Preliminary tests indicate that the second kind of NML measurement may help distinguish oil and water zones and provide information concerning permeability and wettability. (The FFL itself appears to provide some information on permeability.) The second kind of NML measurement requires stopping the logging tool for a short time opposite a zone of interest and taking more extensive NML data that can be displayed as nuclear magnetic relaxation curves. In some instances, oil and water saturations for the region immediately adjacent to the borehole can be read from these relaxation curves. INTRODUCTION In 1946, Bloch, Hansen and Packard and Purcell, Torrey and Pound3 independently announced the successful demonstration of the phenomenon of nuclear magnetic resonance. During the past 13 years, there have been many applications of nuclear magnetic resonance, including applications to the study of chemical structure and to the measurement of magnetic field strengths. Preliminary experiments on the feasibility of using nuclear magnetism measurements in well logging were made independently by California Research Corp. and Varian Assoc., the Varian work being sponsored by the Byron Jackson Tools, Inc. Since then a cooperative research program on nuclear magnetism logging has been carried out by the Byron Jackson Div. and Research Center of Borg-Warner Corp., and California Research Corp., subsidiary of Standard Oil Co. of California. The use of nuclear magnetism in well logging is of special interest because it offers a way of making direct measurements on the hydrogen in the formation fluids and not on the rock matrix. Within the past 1 1/2 years, successful measurements have been made with a research model logging tool in wells in California, Tex as, Utah, Louisiana and Wyoming. NUCLEAR MAGNETISM SIGNALS Polarization, Relaxation and Precession Many atomic nuclei possess magnetic moments and spins; that is, they are similar in some respects to bar-magnet and gyroscope combinations. Molecules and their nuclei are subject to thermal motion, which has a scrambling effect, tending to leave as many nuclear spins oriented in any one direction as in any other. However, if a magnetic field is applied, the magnetic nuclei tend to align in the direction of the field. The scrambling and aligning forces compete with each other, with the result that a few more spins are oriented parallel to the field than in other directions. This gives a net magnetization, or polarization, which is directly proportional to the strength of the applied magnetic field (aligning influence) and inversely proportional to the absolute temperature (scrambling influence). When the magnetic field in, or temperature of, a liquid sample containing protons is changed, the new equilibrium value of proton polarization is not established immediately but requires an amount of time which depends on the nature of the hydrogen-containing materials. The process of approaching the equilibrium value of polarization is called relaxation.'.' Polarization is a vector quantity, and the components parallel to and perpendicular to the magnetic field must be considered separately. Relaxation of the component parallel to the field is called "thermal relaxation", or "longitudinal relaxation", and the corresponding time for this component of non-equilibrium polarization to decay by a factor of e (natural log base) is denoted T. The relaxation of the perpendicular component is called "transverse relaxation", and the corresponding relaxation time is denoted T,. The potential energy of a magnet in a uniform field depends on the angle the magnet makes with the field; therefore, a change of the component of net polarization parallel to the magnetic field involves an exchange of energy between the spin system and the thermal motion of the molecules, leading to the term thermal relaxation for the relaxation of this component. General. Data for the operating information given in the 15 tables in this chapter was obtained from voluminous questionnaires sent to over 100 operating companies in 1972. There has been a considera¬ble change since then in supply and power costs and many companies have had expansions or revisions since that time, so it must be realized that information is valid for the year 1972. This is true except for the three new properties of Sacaton, Metcalf, and Pinto Valley. These three operations started up since 1972 and all information for them was obtained in 1975. The questionnaires were sent to all major copper properties throughout the world as well as to many smaller units and to some mines that had complex or unusual conditions. Properties for which no information is given did not submit completed questionnaires. Several operations were unable to supply information requested be¬cause of company policy prohibiting it. However, data is presented for 75 different operating properties. The reference number of the left-hand column is the same for all 15 tables of data. If the company had several operating properties as of 1972, then subsequent properties use the same number but a different letter. For example, Anaconda's property at Butte, Mont., is IA, whereas Anaconda's (now Anamax) Twin Buttes property in Arizona is IB. Table I gives general data for the properties including exact loca¬tion, milling rate, pertinent assay values and recoveries, and a brief listing of ore and gangue minerals. It was not possible to obtain any more information from the properties in Chile except that given in Table I. Crushing. Crushing plant operating data is given in Table 2. This table gives data on the crushers, feeders, and screens used at each property. The data obtained on feeders was confusing, but, rather than completely eliminate this information, it was decided to report it as given. The confusion lies only in the description of where the feeder is located. Where a primary feeder is listed it was not possible to determine if this feeder was on primary feed or primary discharge. For secondary feeders it is known that the feeder listed usually is feeding the secondary crushers, but at some properties it is handling the secondary crusher discharge. The same reasoning holds true for tertiary feeders-they handle either tertiary feed or discharge. This table contains a voluminous amount of data. A column giving tons per day per square foot of screen area would have been very informative, but some properties included circulating load in the feed rate and others listed new feed only, so calculations were meaningless. Autogenous Mills. The use of autogenous or semiautogenous mills for any property must be given serious consideration in the future. Table 3 lists data for four properties that are fully autogenous and four more semiautogenous mills that use balls to supplement the chunks of ore. This method of grinding is especially applicable when the ore is of such a nature that crushing problems would be severe, such as when ore is wet or sticky or contains a lot of fines. Paradoxically, it should also be considered when ore is tough and hard and blocky because then the competency of the ore means it can serve well as the grinding media. Where the ore varies greatly in hardness, as at Cyprus Pima and Lornex, semiautogenous grinding has been especially beneficial with capital costs and operating costs both 10-20% lower than could be obtained with conventional crushing and grinding. Rod Mills. For a great many years the standard milling operation used two- or three-stage crushing followed by open circuit rod mills and then ball mills in closed circuit with classifiers of some kind. A surprising number of properties crush to the fine size of about 3/8 in. and then use ball mills only, in closed circuit, with no rod mills. It is difficult to say whether rod mill-ball mill circuits or ball mill only is the best. One can be certain of two things: (1) the argument will go on for a long time and (2) for some mills one method obviously was superior over the other. As ball mills of 14, 15 ft, and larger came into use, more properties like Duval Sierrita (16b ft diam by 19 ft long) and Bougainville (18 x 21 ft) were built with single-stage ball mill grinding. Although there are larger rod mills used, especially in the iron ore industry, the largest rod mills on copper ore are at Twin Buttes (14 x 18.5 ft) and at Gibraltar (13'A x 20 ft). Australian rutile was chlorinated in the presence of CO or carbon. The chlorination velocity in CO was found to be strongly influenced by temperature and proportional to the CO concentration, but independent of the Cl, concentration. In the presence of carbon, the reaction velocity is much higher. The reactivity of the carbon and the distance between the carbon and the rutile surfaces are important variables. The reaction velocity is approximately proportional to the Cl, concentration and independent of the CO concentration of the surrounding atmosphere. Experiments with fluidized-bed chlorination of carbon-rutile mixtures indicate that the motion of the bed has little influence on the reaction velocity. At low temperatures, the chlorination velocity of dense tablets is much greater than that of TiO, coke mixtures suitable for fluidization. The reaction mechanism is discussed. In the industrial production of TiCl, rutile is chlorinated in the presence of carbon. Disregarding intermediate steps, the reaction may be expressed by the following equations: The ultimate object of this study was to find out whether the reaction velocity was higher in fluidized bed operation compared with chlorination of pelle-tized carbon-rutile mixtures. From a literature survey and preliminary experiments it was learned that some basic knowledge about the reaction mechanism was needed for a good experimental design. Therefore the following sets of experiments were carried out: 1) Studies on the reaction velocity in the chlorination of rutile with CO as the only reducing agent. 2) Chlorination of separate rutile-carbon tablets. 3) Chlorination of rutile-carbon tablets at different temperatures with various kinds of carbon, various grain sizes, and various tablet-making techniques. This series of experiments was carried out not only with pure chlorine but also with mixtures of chlorine with argon, CO and CO,. 4) Chlorination of rutile-carbon tablets made in a strictly standardized manner. 5) Chlorination of static-bed rutile-carbon mixtures. 6) Fluidized-bed chlorination of the same mixture. The experiments 4 to 6 formed the final and direct test of the main question: Static bed vs fluidized bedo. Although there are many patents and papers dealing with the general aspects of chlorination, only few experiments from which detailed information can be obtained have been reported in the literature. Pamfilov and coworkersl3 have studied chlorination of TiO, with CO or carbon as the reducing agent. They found that the weight decrease per hour at 600o to 800°C amounted to 11 to 14 pct with CO and 45 to 51 pct with carbon. They suggest that phosgene might be an intermediate in the chlorination of TiO,. Takimoto and Hattori have chlorinated reduced titanium oxide (TiO) and found a very high rate of TiC1, -production. They proved that the composition of the gas from the chlorination of rutile-carbon mixtures contained mainly CO. They reported for instance 74.7 pct CO, and 5.6 pct CO at 800°C at which temperature the Boudouard equilibrium composition is 12 pct CO and 88 pct CO. Seligman and Segerchano6 have studied the chlorination of TiO. They proved that Ti0 and chlorine react rather rapidly at temperatures as low as 300°C. Above 400°C, the reaction was complete. At 500°C the velocity of this reaction was much higher than was chlorination of TiO, + C. McTaggart,7 Nishimura, et al. and Wilskam have chlorinated mixtures of carbon and various kinds of rutile or beneficated ilmenite. Nishimura, et al. also report the results from reduction of TiO, with H2, CO, or carbon. At 900°C only 1 pct Ti O is formed in 2 hrs. At 1100°C 23.1 pct Ti, 0, was formed if elementary carbon was present. No carbide formation occurred below 1400°C. McIntosh and Cofferll have observed that the CO, content of the exit gases from chlorination of rutile and calcined petroleum coke is appreciably higher than found in the Boudouard equilibrium. At 900°C the ratio (CO, /CO + CO) is about 80 pct, whereas the equilibrium value is about 2 pct. W. E. Dunn12 has studied the chlorination rates of several TiO,-bearing minerals with CO + Cl, or COCl . Chlorinations were carried out either in a fluidized reactor or a fixed-bed reactor, both having a 30-mm diameter. The results obtained in both reactors were comparable. It was proved that benefi-ciated ilmenite (i.e., ilmenite from which the iron oxide had been removed by chlorination) was chlorinated 10 times faster thanrutile. "The Xstrata Nickel Raglan Concentrator, located at the northern limit of Quebec’s Nunavik region has been in operation since 1997. Originally designed to process 800,000 tonnes per year of high grade nickel ore, plant capacity is currently approaching 1,200,000 tonnes per year due to an Optimization Project (FAG to SAG conversion) in 2005 and many recent processimprovements.In 2006, the Raglan Metallurgical Group with assistance from the Xstrata Process Support group decided to make SAG control one of its priorities in order to further increase throughput and improve stability. The original primary mill control logic delivered by the Optimisation Project in 2005 consisted of a simple PID loop controlling the mill charge (bearing pressure) through feed rate changes. Due to the multivariable, non-linear and disturbance dominated nature of the SAG circuit it was quickly found that this traditional PID control strategy was not able to adequately control the mill; resulting in poor stability, frequent operator interventions and less than optimum performance.This paper describes the successful integration of advanced field systems such as mill feed image analysis (Wipfrag) and crusher gap controller (ASRi), into a multi-variable fuzzy logic SAG mill controller. The process of how a strategy for control was developed and implemented directly in the existing control system (exploiting standard system capabilities) is discussed. It is also shown how this approach has provided mill automation which is simple, robust (despite erratic feed characteristics), and delivers both an increase in throughput and a reduction of variability.INTRODUCTIONOriginally commissioned as a Fully Autogenous Grinding (FAG) circuit in 1997, preparations to convert the Katinniq Concentrator Mill to SAG had in fact commenced as early as 1999, but were halted owing to alternative process improvements which achieved up to 1Mtpa as early as 2000. With the technique and data obtained in using the blast hole diamond drill for "Removal of Horizontal Level Pillar by means of Blast Hole diamond drilling at New Occidental Gold Mines N.L.," as described in Proceedings No. 133 of 1944, and a series of experiments using the blast hole diamond drill for stoping at New Occidental and New Cobar Mines over the past two years, a benching method of stoping has been developed using 2 inch coring diamond drill bits, resulting in efficient and economical ore extraction in these large ore bodies.During the experimental stages the standard H-inch blast hole was used, but the deflection of the holes, when using this solid bit, either decreased or increased the burden of the hole when it became necessary to drill holes deeper than 45 feet.It was found that after blasting vertical holes deeper than 45 feet, the ore did not break satisfactorily over the full length of the hole; on one occasion as much as 30 feet of bench was left at the bottom of the face, which had to be subsequently re-bored andblasted.As this defect was also noticeable to some extent even when the holes did not deflect, it was then obvious that the explosive had become less sensitive in the lower section of the hole. This was probably brought about by pressure being built up ahead of the detonation wave in H-inch hole, resulting in desensitization of the explosive.Another series of experiments were carried out, using 2-inch solid bits, which enabled a much greater burden on the holes, and the use of primacord for the full length of the hole.This gave satisfactory results regarding breaking and fragmentation, but was uneconomic owing to the excessive consumption of diamonds, and the slow rate of drilling.Further experiments were then carried out using 2-inch coring bits, (Fig. 1) which allowed holes of 90-feet to be bored with little deflection, and proved to be entirely satisfactory as to cost and speed of drilling.

"Abstract - Traditionally, the emphasis in ore and reserve inventory has been to provide fairly simple definitions and presentations for reporting to shareholders and the investing public. The recent introduction of the mineral resource category aims to take into account the "part of the deposit that cannot yet be produced or extracted legally and profitably." Recent proposals still place insufficient emphasis on relating resource/reserve reporting definitions more closely to the needs of mining and exploration operators for the estimation and inventory of these basic material assets.In most schemes, significant ambiguities and shortcomings remain. These concern the potential economic interest of resources, the concept of continuity which is fundamental to the estimation of volumes, mass and grades, the objectives of the production feasibility study and the requirements of the geology, engineering and economic appraisals leading to it, and the "availability" of the permits required to start mine development. Up to now, no industry-wide formal consensus has yet been reached for any of these steps, nor for reconciliation between successive statements.A resource/reserve inventory scheme is presented here that is based on ISO 9000 principles and the Australasian system. Explicit criteria and transition points are proposed to define resource and reserve. Similarly, appropriate criteria are proposed to classify the three mineral resource and two ore reserve categories, based on geological and value continuity and on the objectives of the feasibility study. This scheme offers a way to develop ISO 9001 certification of resource/reserve estimation procedures for mining operations and supply exploration companies with an appropriate inventory system, to allow better information for the shareholders and the investing public.Résumé - L’objectif des inventaires des minerais et des réserves est, depuis le début du siècle, de fournir des définitions simples et d’ordre général visant les actionnaires et le public investisseur. L’introduction d’une catégorie de « ressources minérales » fournira un cadre tenant compte de la "portion d’un gisement qui ne peut encore être extraite ou exploitée légalement et à profit." Cependant, les propositions récentes de systèmes d’inventaires ne comportent pas des définitions des ressources et réserves qui tiennent compte suffisamment des besoins des opérateurs en exploitation et en exploration minière.La plupart des systèmes comportent des ambiguïtés et des carences. Citons la susceptibilité d’exploitation commerciale des ressources, la continuité qui est au centre de l’estimation des volumes, masses et teneurs, les objectifs de l’étude de la faisabilité de la mise en production, le niveau requis des travaux de géologie, d’ingénierie et d’économique qui y mènent, ainsi que la disponibilité des permis dont dépend la mise en production. Il n’y a jusqu’à maintenant aucun consensus dans l’industrie sur ces points, ni sur des procédures de réconciliation entre les estimations successives.Le système d’inventaire des ressources/réserves proposé ici s’appuie sur la structure ISO 9000 et le système australien. Des critères et des points tournants explicites sont établis pour définir les ressources et les réserves. The ores of the Golden Mile exhibit considerable complexity. As a consequence, the operating company, Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM), considered it important to develop a coherent database of information describing the nature of the many ore lodes in terms of (1) rock properties and mineralogical content, including relative proportions, grain size, associations and deportment of key elements between minerals, (2) the relative behaviour of consituent minerals in various stages of processing and (3) the nature of the final products and key intermediate streams. The paper describes a sequence of metallurgical tests covering comminution, flotation, gravity concentration, leaching and calcining, carried out on three lodes of the Golden Mile. Key samples generated by the testing were subjected to comprehensive size-by-elemental assaying and QEM*SEM mineralogical determinations of sulphide and precious metal associations. Significant differences between lodes were identified, and the impact of these differences on processing is discussed.
