The major threat to the sustainability of Aluminium Industry is its significant contribution to global warming by way of generation of non eco-friendly gases during its production cycle from Bauxite to the finished product. Though reduction measures are taken in control and effective recovery of values from pot room gases, efforts in use of environment friendly additives in the final products production line is warranted. In this line, the present paper describes our efforts in the use of a new generation refining flux which apart from helping in effective removal of alkali metals, reduction in inclusions and ensure a better metal cleanliness shall also aide in reduction of obnoxious gases generated during the metal refining process prior to casting. The aim of the current work was to reconcile the practical results with the old generation fluxes used. Further improvements to bring in a better metal cleanliness will also be discussed.

he aim of the present investigation was to investigate technological features of the Fe-NbC dissolution in liquid Fe-C alloys. Fe-NbC is a Ferro-niobium alloy with 7%C, has a particle size smaller than 150 pm and its micro constituents are polygonal niobium carbides and an iron matrix. The obtained dissolution time was less than one-minute and the yields were in the range of 80-90% at 1873 K. In the Fe-NbC dissolution process, the dissolution occurs at first, and as a consequence the niobium carbides become free to dissolve. These carbides will dissolve until the melt reaches a saturation point. The non-dissolved carbides remain trapped in the liquid or will form a dross. The addition yields decreases when the niobium concentration reaches this limit value, that depends on the carbon concentration. These define a saturation curve.

During passing gas bubbles through mineral suspensions, some mechanical carryover of fine particles to the froth layer always takes place. The entrainment of mineral particles is influenced by many parameters, mostly by the particle size and the concentration of the frother. The paper deals with influence of selected frothers (methylisobutylcarbinol (MIBC), a-terpineol, and hexadecane tricosaethyleneglycol ether (C16E23)), common laboratory flotation frothers, on the mechanical car-ryover of quartz, a typical gangue mineral component of ores. Entrainment tests were carried out in a laboratory Mechanobr flotation machine with quartz particles suspended in aqueous frother solu-tions. The mechanical recovery of quartz in the presence frother was increasing with time and reached plateau after about 20 minutes of flotation. The plateau level of quartz recovery depended on the frother concentration. Initially an increase of the plateau with frother concentration was observed until the plateau reached the highest level called the maximum recovery emax. The emax can be used as a parameter to characterize the ability of frothers to entrainment. In the studied quartz-frother flotation system the maximum entrainment was 32%, 50% and 80% for methylisobu-tylcarbinol (MIBC), a-terpineol, and monohexadecane tricosaethylene glycol ether (C16E23), re-spectively. A comparison of the maximum entrainment factor emax with other, known from literature, indices such as bubble critical coalescence concentration (CCC), dynamic foamability index (DFI), Jw, e =25%revealed, except DFI, their similarity.

Large amounts of dunile tailings can be recycled for olivine produdion from the existing beneficiation adivity of chromite ore in northern Greece. This olivine production aims at the preparation of a material suitable for the substitution of the environmental hazardous quartz sand in the foundries of Europe In smelting of chromite ore the losses that occur ore usually of the order of 6-8% Cr that report in the slag. Most of this is in the form of oxides that cannot be recovered, but usually 30-35% is in the form of FeCr alloy that can be recovered by gravity methods. About 90% of the produced slag is sold for road construdion after crushing to a desired grain size. Finally, recycling of chromites sludges from the ferrochrome produdion plant, through the preparation of pellets, improved the total chromite yield by 2%.

The magnetite orebody at Pea Ridge strikes NE-SH and dips at about 800 to the SE. The ore is high grade magnetite with a strike length of over 600-m and a maximum width of over 180-m on some of the levels. The shape and the mineral content of the iron orebody have been fairly consistent so far. The iron ore and surrounding basement rocks are Precambrian in age. These rocks are usually very competent, about 400-m of sediments lie over the ore.

Por ello, se han considerado dos sistemas principales para la recuperación y tratamiento de los relaves antiguos: Dragado e Hidráulica. Estos sistemas contienen un equipo de extracción y dilución del relave antiguo, equipo de bombeo, estación de tratamiento para los relaves antiguos, el equipo de almacenamiento y dosaje y equipo de bombeo. Las variantes de los dos sistemas son: equipos, densidades del relave y volumen de agua. De forma que la cantidad de agua recuperada de los relaves de flotación es suficiente para operar el circuito con cualesquiera de los sistemas propuestos. "

Samples of the same coal measure overburden spoil were obtained from three different mine sites. Site A used a 27-m3 tub-mounted dragline, Site S used a front-end loader and truck combination, and Site C used a 6-m3 crawler-mounted dragline. The spoils were analyzed in the laboratory for the strength parameters using drained triaxial tests conducted on 150-mm diameter specimens. Regression analysis was utilized to determine the appropriate failure criterion for the strength data from each site. Spoil obtained from Site S yielded higher shear strengths than Sites A and C.

This type of microscopic investigation, although still in its infancy, has already found practical applications in several different phases of mining activity. The study of the transparent minerals in rocks, by means of the ordinary petrographic microscope, has for long been a very useful supplement to observations in the field, but the opaque minerals, until recently, have had to rest content with a more or less superficial determination with the hand-lens or the blow-pipe. In a great many cases, particularly where the association of metallics has been somewhat complex, this has been entirely inadequate, and the determination of these opaque minerals under the micro- scope, has opened up a new field of scientific investigation that bids fair to surpass, in practical value at least, the micro-scopic determination of the rock-forming minerals. As the details of this kind of microscopy are possibly not entirely familiar to all mining men, it might be well to outline them very briefly before dealing with the practical directions in which this method may be applied. The ordinary petro-graphic microscope, with but one extra attachment, will serve for this work. A small reflecting device, called a vertical illuminator, is inserted immediately above the objective lens. This reflects the light down to the surface of the specimen and from here the light is directed up the middle of the microscope tube to the eye. As it is desirable that the maximum amount of reflection should be secured from the surface of the section, it is first polished and set in a position perpendicular to the vertical axis of the microscope.

Micro-fine disseminated molybdenite was ground in a laboratory stirred mill using steel media and zirconium media respectively. The floatability of ground molybdenite and slurry chemistry was investigated. It was found that the total recovery of ground molybdenite using zirconium media was higher while the pH and Eh of the slurry are lower than that using steel media. When steel media was used, iron oxy-hydroxides had been generated coated on the surface of molybdenite, and decreased the floatability of molybdenite, especially of the -10µm particles. The iron and lead oxy-hydroxides was generated by the reaction between steel media with pyrite and galena associated with molybdenite. It was also found that changing the grinding media to inert can benefit the flotation of molybdenite. The link between geostatistics and Theory of Sampling (TOS) is examined again in view of new findings made while trying to compare predicted sampling variances and estimated grades (using geostatistics) on the same material, and this provides an important consistency requirement whenever calculations are made that involve both theories in a comparative way. In 1979 and 1980, the U.S. Bureau of Mines and U.S. Geological Survey conducted a mineral survey of the 20,500 acre Black Butte RARE II area (No. 5102) in the Los Padres National Forest (fig. 1). The work by the Bureau of Mines indicates that the potential tor mineral resources in the area is low. Samples of outcrops and stream channels contained no economic minerals. A mercury deposit near a granodiorite-sedimentary rock contact occurs 2 mi northeast of the study area, but similar deposits have not been discovered within the area. Geothermal potential exists near Tassajara Hot Springs, but no thermal springs occur in the area; nor have oil, gas, or coal resources been found.

THE concentration of zinc ore in Wisconsin is a comparatively simple process, although it presents problems that must be overcome in an efficient manner in such a way that installation and operating costs are low. As the ore deposits are small, the first cost of the concentrating plant must be low; while the low margin of profit makes it necessary to have the minimum operating costs. The original mills were copied from those of the Joplin district, as most of them were built and operated by Joplin millmen. These served the purpose well; they made a clean concentrate, which was the chief requirement at that time, as most 'of the mines were' considerably 'richer than the average at the present time, and wages and supplies were also considerably lower. ' The apparatus used at present has changed very little in principle. . The grizzly opening has gradually been increased to 12 in. and sometimes no grizzly 'is used. The crusher, gradually grew in size, the largest crusher has -an opening of about 24 by 13 in. and a 7/8-in. throw on the. eccentric shaft.

In order to produce the iron and steel products with high quality and decrease the output of steel tailings, the quality of molten iron is a critical factor for iron and steel companies, especially the content of sulfidic in molten iron. Hot metal pre-treatment, an important and effective method to desulphur, is widely used in steel production. Millions of tons of slag from desulphurization and slag skimming are produced each year in China, and many more times this amount is stored in slag dams because of the lack of effective means to deal with it. In order to achieve the goal of sustain-able development, recycling these slag becomes necessary. The main objective of this paper is to study the composition characteristics of slag that from desulphurization and slag skimming. The sample was obtained from Anshan Iron and Steel Group Corporation, processed by hot metal pre-treatment. In this study, the chemical components and the mineral compositions of sample were tested. The results of chemical components and iron chemistry phase analysis showed that the iron and sulphide content in this sample were high, and the iron products existed mainly in the form of magnetite, metallic iron, ferrosilite. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) results indicated that the sample included metallic iron, ferrate, wustite, metasilicate, aluminate, aluminosilicate, white lime and soon. Grading magnetic separation test work showed that magnetic separation was an effective method to recovery iron products and decrease the sulphide content in concentrate, and the tailing could be used as the raw material or padding in cement production.

Monte ? Carlo simulation is often used to assess the risks associated with uncertain variables in mining operations. The success of Monte-Carlo simulations depends upon reproducing the dependencies among variables to some extent. However, some variables may exhibit different dependency patterns. In these cases, classical techniques for dependency quantification cannot capture dependencies. As an alternative, the copulas allow modeling nonlinear dependencies. Furthermore, any choice of marginal distributions can be used. Especially, for the data, which is sensitive to extreme case such as financial crisis, the copulas arise as a means to reproduce the correlations among variables. In this paper, the copulas are introduced to mining practitioners using Monte-Carlo simulations for risk assessment. Then, a case study is given to show the superiority of the copulas over classical techniques using ModelRisk Software. In conclusion, it was observed that the copulas enhance the quality of Monte-Carlo simulations by capturing variable dependencies.

A flow-sheet for waste-less processing of spent lead batteries comprises mechanized separation of batteries, smelting of the metallic fraction in a kettle, electrothermal smelting of oxysulfate fraction, refining of crude lead and processing of reverts to produce commercial products. Smelting of lead-containing fraction is performed in an electrothermal furnace using a processing technology developed in the Gintsvetmet Institute and differing from conventional processes by the fact that it does not require any fluxing agent (soda); no matte is formed in the process and the amount of slag produced is minimal, because its formation depends only on the ash content of coke and the quality of battery scrap separation. The process has been patented. It has been introduced on a commercial scale in 1.8 MVA furnaces at the plant of A0 "RyazTsvetmet" (Ryazan, Russia). The process has the following main advantages as compared with conventional shaft-furnace smelting and smelting in a short-drum furnace: the process does not require technical-grade oxygen, the amount of process gas generated is minimized ensuring a decrease in lead-containing dust and sulfur dioxide emissions by 3 to 5 times per unit of lead recovered; a decrease in dust entrainment resulting in lower amounts of recycled dust; lower slag yield (a decrease from 20-25% to 3-5%); lower coke requirement (a decrease from 10-14% to 3-4%). Refining of crude lead is performed using conventional technology but there are several unique features for which know-how is available. Processing of by-products of electrothermal smelting and secondary lead refining (slag, drosses, skimmings) and ebonite fraction (crushed battery casings) is performed in a slag-fuming furnace.

Electric utilities depend heavily on coal as a major fuel source for power generation, annually producing more than 85 million ton'> of ash, boiler slag and FGD (flue gas desulfurization -"scrubber") materials as by-products. Utilities and others who burn coal have traditionally disposed of these by-products in ponds or landfills. However, in the last 10-15 years there has been a greatly increased emphasis on beneficial utilization of these materials by the producers themselves as well as by customers who purchase the by-products. Regulatory, cost and technical performance issues currently impact the use of coal ash and other coal combustion by-products (CCB).

The risk and consequences of community rejection and loss of a social licence to operate is well articulated (Moffat et al 2018), however, the means for systematically managing this risk are less established. At the local scale, a mining operation is said to have a social licence to operate (SLO) when it achieves ongoing acceptance or approval from the local community and other stakeholders who can affect its profitability (Graafland, 2002). Without this social acceptance, it is very difficult for a business to operate effectively or profitably. It is well understood that social (or community) acceptance of a mine and its associated operations is a reflection of the quality of the relationship a company has with their host community (Thomson & Boutilier, 2011; Lacey & Lamont, 2014; Parsons et al., 2014; Moffat et al., 2015). Community relations are an integral part of successful mining operations and where these interactions are effective, they tend to foster mutual understanding, trust and support between a company and the host community (Kemp et al., 2006; Holley & Mitcham, 2016). Research further demonstrates that where such interactions are perceived to be procedurally fair, the increased trust created in these company-community interactions tends to lead to higher levels of acceptance of mining operations (Moffat & Zhang, 2014; Lacey et al., 2017).The challenge, however, is how to listen systematically to communities that mining and associated operations; communities that are often located across vast geographic areas and with diverse demographics. To date, traditional methods deployed to both guide and evaluate community engagement and social investment activities have been challenged to reflect the nature of the phenomenon they seek to observe, the voice of community. For example, detailed baseline surveys of community attitudes every three years by companies, as is the requirement within the policy frameworks of most large miners, provide rich insights but do not reflect the dynamic, temporal nature of the relationships that underpins their SLO. These processes typically are largely opaque to communities and distinct from the company’s engagement activities. The CSIRO Local Voices project was developed with Rio Tinto to go some way towards meeting this challenge of how to listen to the voice of community systematically. Although the existence of precious metals, particularly those of the platinum group, in the nickel ores in the Sudbury district has been known for a good many years- almost as long as the ore deposits themselves- the Mond Nickel Company were the first to effect their recovery on a commercial scale. The precious metals values of the different Sudbury ores vary considerably, and are generally higher in the copper-rich ores. These values are so very small that a direct determination in the ores gives quite unreliable results. This is not surprising if one considers that some of the ores contain on1y one unit of total precious metals in about two million units of ore, and that this one unit will consist of seven different metals, each with a different chemical behaviour. It is only after the ores have been smelted to a Bessemer matte containing about 80 per cent combined copper and nickel that the precious metals content can be determined with some degree of certainty. From the figures thus obtained, the precious metals content of the ores can be calculated, provided the tonnage of ore used to produce one ton of matte is known. The recovery of these minute quantities of precious metals out of ?such a large amount of gangue and sulphides of iron, copper, and nickel seems at first glance a commercial and technical impossibility. Nevertheless, science has found a way to conquer all the difficulties, and quite substantial quantities of the precious metals contained in the Sudbury nickel-copper ores have been regu1arly recovered for many years by the Mond Nickel Company.

The present communication reports the results obtained by applying different concentration methods, at laboratory level, to the black sands from Estado Bolivar, Venezuela, with the aim of obtaining an adequate ilmenitic concentrate for the subsequent chlorination process. Sizing analysis was performed and plasma emission spectroscopy method was used to determine the chemical composition. It was found that from the two hydrogravimetric methods used, the Humphrey spirals is much more effective than Wilfley tables, leading to a 85% recovery. The most convenient particle size group for these concentration methods was the one corresponding to ASTM 40-140 mesh. When magnetic concentration was applied to the concentrate, obtained as a product from Humphrey spiral, a recovery of ilmenite more than 90% was obtained in the first step. It has been shown that the ore would respond to the separation techniques employed, giving individual minerals: ilmenite, zircon and silica as concentration products.
