The first wagon trail across Loveland Pass was built in 1869 thus starting the struggle between the Colorado Rockies and interstate travel. The 1st Pioneer Bore underneath Loveland Pass at the Continental Divide in Colorado was attempted between 1941 and 1943 and was abandoned due to ground conditions at the Loveland Fault. Construction on the nearby Eisenhower Tunnel began in 1967 and was completed in 1973. Numerous challenges associated with tunneling, including at 11,000 ft were overcome. The purpose of this paper is to summarize the history of investigation and construction challenges associated with the Eisenhower Tunnel to celebrate its 50th anniversary.

Nassau County, New York, is undertaking several projects to improve the water quality in the Western Bays of Long Island. A major step forward will be the completion of the Bay Park Conveyance Project, which will divert most treated effluent away from the Western Bays to an existing ocean outfall at the Cedar Creek Water Pollution Control Plant. The ongoing works include 3.6 miles of microtunneling, 7 miles of sliplining, 14 shafts, and a 75 MGD pump station. This paper provides an overview of the design and an update on construction progress through December 2022. The project is a collaborative effort between Nassau County, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, the design-builder, and various consultants.

The modeling of austenite evolution during the hot rolling of steels is covered in the literature for a wide range of chemical compositions, although mainly for carbon contents below 0.20%. In addition, most research on this topic is oriented for processes that are characteristic of flat products. Compared to those processes, the hot rolling of bars for structural applications presents considerable particularities concerning mainly deformation, rolling speed and rolling temperature profile. Those particularities result in considerable changes on process parameters that affect the austenite microstructure evolution, both in the softening and hardening mechanisms if microalloying elements such as Nb is present. The aim of this work was to develop a model to predict the evolution of austenite microstructure that is suitable for the hot rolling of structural reinforcing bars. Different torsion tests simulating industrial schedules particular from those type of processes were performed. The tests showed the need to investigate Nb strain-induced precipitation interaction with softening mechanisms that can occur during the deformation schedule. At the end, the new proposed kinetics and routines were introduced to a program, MicroSim-Bars®, that is able to model austenite evolution under structural bar hot rolling conditions.

This paper provides an overview of the radiological risk mitigation approach applied by the Saskatchewan Research Council (SRC) for the remediation of 35 legacy uranium mine sites in northern Saskatchewan where uranium exploration and extraction took place in the 1950–60s. Mining activities resulted in an irregular increase of the gamma radiation dose rate (up to 18 μSv/h). The radiological objectives for the sites include a gamma dose rate at a spot (<2.5 μSv/h above local background), and the dose rate averaged over a hectare (<1 μSv/h above local background). These objectives are generally achievable at the impacted sites through the installation of shielding soil cover. This method may be impractical for site areas with rough terrain (e.g., steep slopes) and/or difficult access. A risk assessment approach is applied to determine if these areas can be safely left uncovered or if additional mitigation measures should be implemented. The risk assessment approach is based on two factors: (i) the ambient radiation dose rates collected through gamma surveys, and (ii) actual land use data collected through various surveys of activities of local community members at the sites. Exposure scenarios based on four land uses are applied to estimate a potential annual dose load for members of the public. The estimated doses are compared with the criterion of 0.3 mSv/a recommended by the Canadian Guidelines for the Management of Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials (NORM). If the criteria are not satisfied, a mitigation plan is developed, and post-remediation gamma levels are modelled using GIS tools to evaluate the performance of the proposed mitigations. The proposed approach allows the team to optimize resources for the site remediation so that public exposure to NORM are as low as reasonably achievable after remediation.

Magnetic separation equipment has long been used to upgrade and beneficiate a wide variety of minerals and materials. Over the years, significant advances in both wet and dry magnetic separators have improved their operability and separation performances, broadening their use.But no one answer exists to the question: what is the right type of magnetic separator? For many minerals, including ilmenite, both process routes may be viable. There are technical, production, as well as economic reasons for choosing wet versus dry. However, recent developments illustrate that a new generation of wet magnetic separators is approaching performance once seen only in dry magnetic separation. With quality and production performance becoming similar, the choice between wet and dry magnetic separation is not as cut and dry as it once was.

Modem open cut and underground mining in the tropics inevitably expose partially weathered and unweathered rocks to oxygen and water, leading to weathering and the release of solutes and often acidity as well. Historical monitoring data can demonstrate these phenomena. Three case studies from open cut mines in the north of the Northern Territory illustrate the deterioration in quality of pond water receiving drainage from waste rock dumps. The potential for deterioration of water quality was not recognised in many mine Environmental Impact Statements prepared and accepted in the 1980s. The examples documented indicate the importance of adequately planning for this near inevitable process. Retrofitting a mine water management system to &apos;no&apos; or minimal release can be very difficult and expensive, and may not be feasible, leading to downstream pollution. The characterisation of acid and solute production potential of ore and waste rock, and improved dumping strategies and water management are very important to minimise the environmental impact of mining in the tropics.

The Roy Hill Project is an independent integrated port, rail and mine development in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The bankable feasibility study for the project was completed in January 2011 by Roy Hill Holdings Pty Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Hancock Prospecting Pty Ltd. The Project will deliver 55 Mt/a of premium quality iron ore to a rapidly growing market with a mine life of over 27 years. This study is based on exploiting a 1.2 Bt bedded resource of microplaty haematite-rich Marra Mamba, from which 562 Mt of reserves has been delineated to date. A further 1.1 Bt resource of detritals and low grade bedded is proposed to be mined once the bedded high grade resource is depleted. Roy Hill lump and fi ne ore products will compete strongly with other Pilbara products. As a low cost producer, Roy Hill is on track to capture four per cent of the global seaborne traded iron ore market. The project decision to proceed is targeted for Q2 2011 to enable first ore on ship by Q2 2014.

Les bancs de quartzite inhabituellement purs et epais decouverts lors de la cartographie geologique de la region de Charlevoix sont maintenant entres au stade de !'exploitation et se revelent etre une richesse naturelle durable pour cette region. Les etudes stratigraphiques effectuees dans cette partie (Quebecia) du bouclier canadien indiquent que la succession: lo. complexe a amphibolite et leptynite a la base, 2o. quartzite et gneiss a sillimanite, muscovite et gneiss calcosilicate et conglomeratique au sommet est constante sur de grandes distances (de Charlevoix a la Basse Cote Nord) et represente une sedimentation continentale et de plateforme, peu epaisse, du proterozotque inferieur. La purete et la grande epaisseur du quartzite s'expliqueraient par un processus de sedimentation continentale complexe ou se succedent climat tropical-humide et glaciaire-aride et transport fluviatile et eolien. Parmi la multitude de depots de quartzite qui existent dans le monde, peu sont de qualite superieure. Or, de par sa composition chimique, le quartzite de La Galette se compare avantageusement a ceux des meilleurs gisements des Etats-U ni s, de l'Europe de l'Ouest et de I' Afrique du Sud. D'acces facile pour l'exploitation, les gisements ne sont qu'a une quarantaine de kilometres de Baie Saint-Paul ou de La Malbaie, sur le SaintLaurent. L'utilisation en metallurgie du quartzite de La Galette comprend la production de silicium, de ferro-silicium et d'autres alliages de silicium . La composition du quartzite est en outre appropriee pour la production de carbure de silicium et de silicate de sodium. Les fines peuvent etre utilisees pour la fabrication du verre et comme matiere de charge.

Mining and tunneling in so-called “squeezing ground conditions” at high in-situ stress can result in substantial and enduring ground deformations. The magnitude of deformations is closely tied to the applied excavation- and support concept, though typically, they can reach tens of centimeters. The yielding principle is based on the idea, that the need for support capacity decreases as deformation increases. To enable controlled ground deformation and safe working conditions, yielding elements as a part of the shotcrete lining are implemented. These types of elements avoid an overstressing of the shotcrete lining. During the deformation process, the support pressure of the yielding elements and lining increases, thus stabilizing the ground. Furthermore, long-term creep deformations of the rock mass can be absorbed with such a system. This economic support technique represents the state-of-the-art infrastructure tunneling practice in squeezing ground condition. A novel yielding element of High-Strength Expanded Polystyrene (HS-EPS) was invented, which overcomes existing systems’ drawbacks. This innovative system is lightweight and allows for safe and rapid installation. Furthermore, the modular setup of the element enables an easy on-site adaption to react to in-situ deformation patterns and changing ground conditions. Recent experiences from applications in Alpine base tunnels in squeezing ground are presented.

This paper explores the interpretation and application of Particle Size Distribution (PSD) curves in optimizing blast design and enhancing downstream operations. The study looks at important factors like D50, D80, fines content, and the uniformity index to show how PSD curves affect the efficiency of different mining processes. The first section of this paper discusses the impact of blast design parameters such as burden, spacing, and explosive energy on the resulting PSD, highlighting their significance for downstream operations like crushing, and material handling. The section concluded that proper alignment of PSD with downstream size classes, like primary crusher inlet sizes, among others, can result in substantial cost reductions and productivity gains. The second part presents a case study from dstgroup aggregate quarry in northern Portugal, utilizing fragmentation analysis to evaluate blast performance and promote continuous improvement. The section specifically examines the effect of stemming material size on blast fragmentation, comparing the impact of using aggregate with a D80 of 12.32 mm versus a D80 of 21.94 mm. The D80 value represents the particle size at which 80% of the stemming material is smaller, making it a critical parameter in evaluating the stemming's effectiveness in confining explosive energy. The drilling and blasting designs were meticulously planned using O-PitDev and O-PitSurface software to ensure accuracy in blast parameters and layout. To assess the fragmentation resulting from these different stemming material sizes, the study utilized WipFrag 4 software. The software allowed for precise measurement of particle size distribution after the blast, as well as a detailed comparison between the two stemming sizes. Results from the analysis indicate that using bigger-sized stemming material led to improved blast confinement, which in turn resulted in better fragmentation compared to the smaller-sized material. The reviewed blast videos demonstrate that the larger aggregate effectively contained the explosive energy within the borehole, thereby reducing premature venting and directing more energy towards breaking the surrounding rock mass. This led to finer fragmentation with D80 = 1240.1 mm, D50 = 685.9, and Dmax = 2580 mm, which is advantageous in downstream operations like crushing and milling. On the other hand, the smaller stemming material (D80 = 21.94 mm) did not confine the explosive energy as efficiently, resulting in coarser fragmentation (D80 = 1327.37 mm, D50 = 750.76, and Dmax = 2370 mm) and reduced overall blast efficiency. These findings highlight the significant influence of stemming material size on blast performance and fragmentation outcomes.

Theoretically, controlling redox potential to a relatively low value and inhibiting jarosite formation on the chalcopyrite surface would be an effective strategy to accelerate the bioleaching of chalcopyrite. In this work, using limonite as seed crystals, the effects of the goethite precipitation process on the bioleaching of chalcopyrite were studied for the first time. The bioleaching results showed that the addition of limonite controlled the redox potential in an appropriate range and promoted chalcopyrite dissolution through the removal of ferric (Fe3+) ions. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope analyses indicate that limonite significantly induced the goethite precipitation process and inhibited the production of jarosite. We conclude that promoting the goethite precipitation process with limonite is an effective strategy in accelerating the bioleaching process of chalcopyrite.

The Canal Road Dip Slide is an active landslide located on South Pender Island, British Columbia. The effects of the fall 2021 atmospheric river prompted the British Columbia Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure to initiate an emergency response project to realign Canal Road out of the active landslide zone for safe traffic passage. The work was tendered in a bidding process and included blasting and rock excavation work at the project site. Tetra Tech Canada Inc. was retained by the contractor to be their Blast and Vibration Specialist. The close proximities of an active landslide, a Canadian National Park, and other segments of construction posed stringent constraints to blasting. The governing constraints to blast design included a Peak Particle Velocity (PPV) limit of 3 mm/s (0.12 in/s) along the adjacent landslide centerline and a slide movement constraint. Sixteen blasts were executed throughout the scope of work to remove 2595 m3 (3394 yd3) of meta-sedimentary rock. Blast designs adhered to the constraints by utilizing up to quadruple decking in 50+ blast holes which lead to complex timing schemes. Several blasts were over 4 seconds in duration, with one at nearly 8 seconds. The landslide area was monitored with Shape Accel Arrays (SAA) throughout the scope of work that tracked geohazard slide movement during construction. The SAA data is presented, and the effect of blasting is discussed. Site specific parameters for PPV estimation were calculated and are presented. Collaboration and communication between the stakeholders allowed the project team to successfully overcome the technical challenges posed by the Canal Road Dip Slide.

With a brownfield project comes control integration challenges. The Khumani Iron Ore Mine’s second phase expansion posed a number of challenges as there was substantial brownfields work conducted. The fi rst phase was the compilation of the modifi ed process functional specifications for the project. The second phase was an audit on all of the operational sequences; this included a comparison between the SCADA sequences, sequential starts analysed from the historian data (with the potential for improvements made by the plant operators in manual start-ups) and what was proposed in the process functional specification. Differences, inclusions and missing equipment were highlighted. The third phase was the comparison of interlocking and control in the PLC with the updated process functional specification; this was done during the coding process. Running parallel to the three phases was the SCADA integration; tie-ins to the existing SCADA were conducted on maintenance days and shutdowns, in many instances with ‘dummy’ equipment to get the operational staff accustomed to the new interface. This paper details each of the phases, the success of this methodology as well as the pitfalls experienced.

Lead substrate anodes are widely used in the electroplating and electrolytic field. However, with the change of internal stress, the oxide films are gradually generated on the surface of lead anode. Their structure and stress properties were studied during the oxidation by means of Raman spectra, XRD, SEM. The result showed that the diffraction peaks of lead were mainly found at the initial oxidation stage. With increasing oxidation time, Pb diffraction peaks were weakened and the diffraction peaks of PbO/PbO2 strengthened remarkably. When the oxidation time was above 10 min, monoclinic PbCrO4 was also generated in the oxide film with CrO4 2 ions solution as electrolyte. Raman spectra revealed that Raman peaks of PbO/PbO2 were gained. In addition, Raman peaks of PbCrO4 at 830–840 cm−1 were found using the CrO4 2 ions as electrolyte. Based on the relationship of the internal stress of oxide film and Raman peaks shift, PbO/PbO2 induced obvious stress generation in CrO4 2 ion electrolyte. The nucleation style of oxidation film was 3D progressive nucleation at first. After the peak current, it turned to be 3D instantaneous nucleation. Both Canada and the United States are endowed with significant reserves of mineral resources. Mining industries in these two countries have a strong safety and health culture; skilled, dedicated and well-paid workforce; applications of state-of-the art technologies and high productivity, strict environmental requirements and social responsibility. Both countries are global leaders in safe, economic, productive, environmentally responsible and sustainable mining practices. Mining schools/ departments in Canada and the United States provide a strong and comprehensive education and training, hands-on learning experience, with support for internships and co-op opportunities to prepare graduates for careers not only nationally but also in the global mining industry. While there are many similarities in their industries and mining schools, there are also some differences. This article examines the contribution of mining to the economy, the political climate, the regulatory framework, the investment climate, environmental regulations, the language, the perception of mining, news and press coverage, and the academic landscape in both countries. Opinions, observations and perspectives shared in this article are of the author, and do not necessarily reflect the views, policies or positions of any organization, employer or affiliated group.

A mine fire model gallery has been designed and constructed on the premises of the Central Mining Research Institute, Dhanbad, India to perform systematic in-depth studies on various aspects of mine fires. The gallery is 65.5 m long and 5.86 m2in cross-section and it is divided into firing and non-firing zones. It is equipped with a computer-aided online telemonitoring system that has 130 sensors, two data loggers and computer peripherals for continuous recording of various fire parameters. A fan to generate airflow through the gallery has been installed at its end. Two sliding doors and one rolling shutter were also provided for sealing and regulation of airflow. Two sets of experiments have been carried out in the model gallery maintaining air velocity of 1 and 1.5 m/s through it. In the experiments, the inner sides of the firing zone, 22 m in length, were lined with a thin layer (8?10 cm thick) of coal slabs. Two fire suppression techniques viz. flushing of liquid nitrogen (LN2) and infusion of high pressure high stability (HPHS) nitrogen foam were tried to quantify their effectiveness under dynamic fire conditions. The paper addresses important design features of the gallery, its instrumentation system, the experimental procedure adopted and important findings from the experiments. It has been observed that the intensity of the fire was very high after one hour of its initiation and continued for 3?4 hours. During the period, frequent backlash with smoke and flame was noticed. The efficacy of the fire suppression techniques has been assessed interms of reduction in temperature, generation rate of CO2and CO, and heat release rate. The study reveals that high pressure high stability (HPHS) nitrogen foam is more effective in controlling open fires than liquid nitrogen is. The latest outcome of science is that aII bodies are composed of vibrating atoms or molecules. In almost all mineral bodies when changing from the gaseous or liquid condition to the solid, if the vibrating molecules are allowed free play, they arrange themselves in a symmetrical manner, and at a definite angle to each other: This angle varies with each system of crystallization. In a great many bodies this process may be brought about artificially, and the growth of the crystal watched. The most common method is to dissolve some substance in water or some other liquid, on slowly evaporating the liquid, the substance dissolved will solidify and the molecules will arrange themselves in their particular crystalline form.The element carbon crystallizes in two forms; as graphite in the form of a short six-sided prism&apos;, and in the diamond generally as the octohedron in the cubical system of crystallization. Orystalline bodies, as a rule, have plain faces but what is remarkable in the diamond is that in a great many cases the faces are rounded. Its great beauty as a gem when cut, and the high artificial value placed upon it by fashion, as well as its value as a cutting and boring instrument-it being the hardest body in nature-has caused many attempts to be made to form it artificially. These attempts have met with fair success as a scientific experiment, but as a commercial speculation they have been a complete failure. The most noted of these experIments was carried out by Mr. Hannay, of Glasgow.Paraffin spirit with lithium was submitted td prolonged heating in strong wrought-iron tubes securely welded. In most of the experiments the tubes exploded; but in a few cases the experiments were successful, and on cutting open the tubes small crystals of diamonds were found embedded in a black mass.Despretz produced minute diamonds under the influence of a powerful electric current from coal.

The ?AMIRA Metal Accounting Project? had its origin in a workshop held in Cape Town on 1 August 2001, with the title ?Challenges in Metal Accounting and Information Management?, which was organised by the Western Cape Branch of the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. This workshop identified the lack of an accepted set of standard procedures for metallurgical accounting as an industry-wide problem. Discussions which followed this workshop led to the initiation of the AMIRA Project P754, ?Improving Metal Accounting?, in 2003. The primary objective of the project was to provide tools for improving the auditability and transparency of metal accounting from mine to product and to facilitate good corporate governance. The planned deliverables of the project were a series of research projects into aspects of metal balancing in different types of metallurgical operations, a Code of Practice on Metal Accounting, and a textbook on the subject which could serve as a guide for metal accounting practitioners and students studying the topic. An additional planned deliverable was the provision of a new variety of professional experts in metal accounting, through successful completion of the research projects. Researchers were engaged at the Universities of Cape Town, Queensland and Stellenbosch and the project was sponsored by five mining companies, including three of the largest global mining groups. Research Program Eight research projects were undertaken as part of the P754 project and these are described briefly here to indicate the scope of the project. University of Cape Town ?Development of a methodology for measurement network design for metallurgical accounting at Namakwa Sands?. This project was based on the Namakwa Sands Separation Plant, with a data rich environment, and involved the investigation of measurement network design through the use of heuristics and the analysis of complex processing circuits. An industry-wide survey of current practice to facilitate the development of an expert system for plant accounting measurements was carried out. ?Metallurgical accounting design at the Waterval UG-2 Concentrator?. The objective of this project is to develop a model for predicting metal recoveries from the different components of a blended ore feed to a plant. ?Optimal measurement network design for metallurgical accounting at Zincor?. This project provided a hydrometallurgical test case for the design and evaluation of a semi-automated optimal measurement network. Known epithermal deposits in the Coromandel region belong to the low-sulphidation type, represented by three subtypes: (1) andesite-hosted epithermal Au-Ag, (2) rhyolite-hosted epithermal Au-Ag, and (3) andesite-hosted polymetallic veins. Paleo-depths for a range ofdeposits are estimated using various features including: paleo-surface indicators (e.g. sinters), hydrostatic pressures estimated from homogenisation temperature measurements on fluid inclusions, and alteration mineralogy. Paleo-depth estimates to the base of the ore zone for the rhyolite-hosted Coromandel deposits are in the range 200 to 500 m. Andesite-hosted Au-Ag deposits have more variable paleo-depths, and are deeper (up to 950 m) in those deposits with base metals at depth. The majority of Coromandel Au-Ag deposits have limited depth extents (&lt;200 m) of economic grade mineralisation, although Waihi and Karangahake are notable exceptions with depth extents of 575 m and 700 m respectively. Limited depth extents of economic ore are a feature of epithermal systems worldwide and are commonly attributed to gold deposition from boiling fluids. Under hydrostatic conditions in epithermal/geothermal systems, boiling in an up-flowing hydrothermal fluid is controlled by the boiling point for depth (BPD) curve. From fluid inclusion studies of many low-sulphidation epithermal systems, deposition of electrum in economic concentrations appears to be confined to a temperature window of 260 to 180¦C. This means that for dilute, gas-poor fluids that follow the BPD curve, gold deposition is limited to a vertical depth zone of about 400 m, with its upper boundary at about 100 m below the ground surface. The greater depth extent at Waihi and Karangahake, can be explained by mixing of/a deep, hot (300¦C) fluid with cooler (c. 200¦C) heated ground waters. This has the effect of lowering the 260¦C isotherm by up to 300 m, thereby increasing the depth range of economic grade gold deposition within the 260 to 180¦Cwindow of electrum deposition.

"Using batch flotation experiment, contact angle measurement, particle size analysis, and scanning electron microscope (SEM), the influence and difference of pH value on the flotation rate of talc and chalcopyrite were investigate without collector at the pH range of 3~11. The results showed that, the flotation rate of talc decrease with the increasing of flotation time, while that of chalcopyrite hardly affect by flotation time, besides, the flotation rate of chalcopyrite is much less than that of talc, so the laws of flotation rate of the two minerals are independent of pH value. The flotation test data of two minerals are simulated with first order and multi-rate flotation kinetic model respectively. The simulation results showed that flotation of talc only meet the first order kinetic model, while chalcopyrite’s meet the both. In addition, According to test results of talc and chalcopyrite by the particle size distribution, SEM photographs and the contact angle measurement, the reason why talc did not conform to the first order kinetic model is not because of particle size distribution, but of particle shape. That is to say, because of sheet structure of talc, the contact angle of layers and sections are 74°and 52°respectively. At the same time, the contact angle of layers and sections are different between the particles. Serpentine are regarded as the most difficult selected type in various chalcopyrite ore, and the predominant reason is that it contains talc. Talc, as a nonpolar layered silicate mineral, is one kind of common associated mineral in sulfide ores (Lu, 2010). Concentrate quality and flotation process of chalcopyrite are influenced as a result from the presence of talc. It is because that talc has inherent floatability which makes it readily mixed with the floated mineral and talc is easy to slime causing the slime coating of the valuable mineral (Beattie et al., 2006). Thus in order to improve the flotation effect of chalcopyrite, methods can be introduced from two respects. One method is that fast-floating talc mineral is floated preferentially, and the other is that sulfide mineral is floated prior to talc by depressing the flotation of talc mineral (Beattie et al., 2006), nevertheless, no matter with which the flotation effect of fine-sized chalcopyrite is not positive. Therefore, in order to realize the flotation separation of talc and chalcopyrite, the difference between the inherent floatability of fine-sized chalcopyrite and talc is researched and analyzed in terms of flotation dynamics in the absence of collector and frother."
