"More than 25 years of uninterrupted research on ground support technology for underground mines has been undertaken at the University of Wollongong. This research has resulted in significant findings on tendon characteristics and strength properties. The paper focuses on the development of the fourth generation of cylindrically shaped shear test apparatus for assessing tendon performance in shear. This shear apparatus is known as the MK-IV Double Shear Box or Naj Aziz Double Shear Box (NADSB), and is based on the experience gained from the development of previous versions of rectangular double shear boxes. The new NADSB is circular in shape and is fitted with a truss system, which permits friction free shear testing of tendons across joint planes. A series of double shear tests were carried out on a number of cable bolts commonly used in Australian mines, both plain and indented wires, under varied pretension loads. The results were compared with similar test results using rectangular shaped double shear apparatus, with and without friction across joint faces. The significance of wire surface roughness and increased initial pretension loads are discussed and conclusions made, suggesting that indented wires are inferior in shear compared with plain cable bolts. The general test procedure of the NADSB is described and different concrete reinforcement techniques are reported. The influence of external and internal confinement of the concrete medium blocks in a circular double shear box contributed to consistent test results with a minimum of lateral and axial cracks occurring in the host medium.INTRODUCTIONThe use of long tendon ground support elements (cable bolts) is now a common practice in modern underground coal mines, hard rock mines, tunnels and other underground structures. Due to their material properties cable bolts contribute significantly to the overall ground reinforcement provided by a support system. Cable properties in tension and shear are in many cases vital to maintaining a safe and productive underground environment. Accordingly, tension and shear properties must be assessed accurately using both valid and reliable methods.Load transfer property testing of tendons has been studied over several decades with much of the early research focused on the pull and shear testing of solid rock bolts and hollow bolts (like Swellex and split set tube bolts), as these elements were used extensively at this time. It was not until the 1970’s that the use of cables for ground reinforcement developed, and as such highlighted the need to extend load transfer property testing to include shear strength of cable bolts. Initially, the discarded hoisting ropes were used for ground support in metal mines, particularly in stopping wall support and then late in 1980’s cable tendons began to use in coal mines."

Tremendous strides have been made in front end loaders in the last fifteen years. Fifteen years ago a 2; cubic yard front end loader was the largest standard machine you could purchase. Today there are two commercially available 15 yard front end loaders and many 10 yard front end loaders. The estimated total worldwide market for all front end loaders over one cubic yard has increased to over 30,000 units yearly. The trend for front end loaders, in general, and for the mining market, in particular, is to larger and larger loaders. Today there are 18 cubic yard and a 24 cubic yard front end loader in prototype form. It is not inconceivable that within another fifteen years that there will be front end loaders in the 50 cubic yard class with design features quite different from today's. These larger loaders are being designed at the demand of the mining industry and the design criteria are being directed at this market area. The costs of these larger loaders will be greater per unit of capacity, and it is the intent of the various manufacturers that they will be more reliable, be easier to service, give greater availability, live longer, and cost less to maintain, than previous loaders. It is also the intent of the manufacturers to compete directly with the large mining shovel as the front end loaders become appropriately larger and more reliable. There has been some trend in this direction in the past with smaller shovels and loaders. In Figure No. 1 are data for U.S. production of front end loaders (5-6 cubic yard class and 10 cubic yard class) and U.S. production of cable operation, crawler mounted power shovels, draglines and cranes (1; to 5 cubic yard class) for the years 1965 and 1970. This Country Documentation Report presents the development of economic indices for the Philippines for the period from 1970 through 1981. The work was done through the Bureau of Mines, Minerals Availability Program, under Contract number J01225001. This contract calls for the development of twelve index time series describing factor input costs in the mining sector of 95 countries. The twelve index time series describe the costs of: 1) mining wages, 2) construction wages, 3) equipment and repair parts, 4) bits and related steel, 5) eimber and lumber, 6) fuel, 7) powder and balsting agents, 8) tires, 9) construction materials, 10) industrial materials, 11) transportation, and 12) electrical power. These indices combined with weight factors being developed by the personnel of the Minerals Availability Field Office (MAFO) of the Bureau of Mines in Denver, Colorado, will be used to perform instantaneous updates of all costs relating to the mining industry. The indices were developed primarily for use in the Bureau's Minerals Availability Program in assessing the worldwide availability of nonfuel minerals.

The method of small-angle X-ray (and also synchrotron) scattering, which was developed for solving problems associated with structural high-resolution diagnostics, was tested for bauxites of Vezhay-Vorykvinskoye field.INTRODUCTION A highly intense production of many types of mineral deposits results in gradual depletion and of mining-geological and mining-technical conditions of various ore reserves ?. Relatively easily accessible and rich deposits are getting depleted in the first place, and it is necessary to involve low grade and refractory ores into production and processing. Traditional technologies can hardly be applied (Chanturia, 2017; Bazin et al., 2014; Ponaryadov, 2017). It is difficult to analyse the economics without an integrated view of mine transactions, stockpile inventories, process flows and assays. The lack of integration of mining and metallurgical information with sufficient detail to analyse and act is a problem. However, to take action requires real time information from manufacturing assets, corrected for gross errors from trucks, shovels, conveyors, faulty sensors, bad instrument calibration. Validation methods use process models to identify inconsistent information in the case of corrupt actionable information. This paper presents new strategies that transform the data into business information for continuous improvement and optimization. This technical presentation will review recent implementations enabling large metallurgical complexes to improve their data quality for overall production and energy management. A competence center emerges as an enabler for implementing operational intelligence. The evolution of Web services to troubleshoot plant information and to collaborate at the enterprise level is presented.

Low-temperature heat capacities of chiolite (Na5Al3F14) were determined by adiabatic calorimetry in the temperature range 5.8 to 300 K. The derived standard entropy (S°, 298.15) was 115.6 ± 0.2 cal/deg-mole. High temperature enthalpies relative to 298.15 K were obtained by precision drop calorimetry up to 1,000 K. Tables of experimental data and related thermodynamic functions are given for the temperature range of experimental observations.

The research and development of a pattern recognition system which can predict incipient failures and safety hazards in the mine power network is described. An examination of mine electrical safety hazards revealed they are often related to the electrical equipment down-time experienced on mine sections. Based on this, a method is proposed that can improve both production and safety, without compromising either. Equipment failure modes are examined to illustrate how the ultimate failure can be predicted for enough in advance to allow a convenient and safe repair, followed by a discussion of actual monitoring system performance. Finally, the paper is concluded by projections of the system's utility to industry.

YOU will likely recall the accomplishments of the International Geophysical Year of 1957, with its polar expeditions, the discovery of the Van Allen radiation belts and the spectacular launchings of the first artificial earth satellites. Our know ledge of the exterior of the earth was greatly increased by this international, friendly, cooperative scientific investigation. The Inter-national Union of Geodesy and Geo-physics has now been joined by the new International Union of Geological Sciences in sponsoring a similar study of the earth's interior. The program will extend from January, 1962 until December. 1964, and is known as the International Upper Mantle Project. During the T.G.Y studies of the interior of the earth were relatively neglected, even though the same international •Cooperation in obtaining simultaneous world-wide observations, by similar instruments, is required to locate and study earth-quakes, for example, as it is to study the earth's upper atmosphere. The upper mantle is 1•emote from man, as it extends from a depth of about 10 km. to perhaps 1000 km., but its practical importance is great.

The advances in electronics and the development of more efficient algorithms, allow for the designing of more complex and sophisticated automated systems. The new devices include lighter, faster, reliable, and stronger robot manipulators. One available technology, with relatively low cost, is a simple robot manipulator controlled by remote control. The device has been designed to be used in both mining and law enforcement, where it can be useful for inspection, rescue, gas analysis, and even to manipulate dangerous objects, such as explosives. The applications may even include the rescue of trapped miners in risky environments. The major advantage is the fact that the robot can be controlled with a remote and monitored through a video camera, minimizing human exposure to hazardous areas, where robots can perform tasks in an aggressive atmosphere and confined spaces. This article presents a mining robot manipulator controlled by remote control, using video cameras for positioning and sensors for movements, which are located on the operator's arm. With this system, it is possible to create a sensation of virtual reality, allowing easy operation for anyone trained in dealing with explosives, rescues, or other dangerous tasks. Blasting and mining are becoming perfect applications for robots, and its use should increase very soon. The results are discussed and presented for the brand new Xiru 01 robot manipulator.

Recently, the North American mining industry experienced a severe recession, forcing managers to take dramatic steps to cut costs and compete in the difficult international market. Some of these steps were closing mines, reducing work forces, renegotiating wage agreements, and purchasing the most productive equipment. Managers are now looking beyond these traditional avenues and are focusing more on advanced technology. In the present environment, it is essential that mine operators obtain the maximum use of capital expended on equipment. However, mine workers do not obtain maximum efficiency or productivity from equipment because the adverse and hazardous mine environment impedes human performance. Also, the efficient use of large, complex machines calls for levels of precision that many times are beyond the capability of even highly trained miners. A possible solution to this problem is a machine that mines without operators - autonomous mining machines. However, numerous problems confront researchers who are attempting to develop such equipment. Some mining tasks are not always composed of a series of cyclic motions readily performed by factory floor robots. In addition, mining takes place in the geological environment where conditions are highly variable and unpredictable. As a result, these machines must be able to sense and adapt to variations in operating tasks and environment. Considerable autonomous vehicle research has been completed, especially for defense. However, autonomous vehicle (AV) technology has not advanced to practical application yet (King, 1988) and mining research is necessary in areas: representing mining specific knowledge; •analyzing and reasoning about sensor data in the mining environment; and •discovering completely new mining methods or new approaches to existing methods that become apparent when we remove the constraints imposed by the necessity of human operators. A specific machine, the LHD, can be used to show the problems for researchers who are attempting to develop autonomous machines for mining. This author chose the LHD because it can borrow concepts developed for autonomous navigation by military programs. But considerable mining research is also required. Furthermore, studies done at the Henderson mine, in Colorado, show autonomous LHD 's promise cost and safety benefits (King, 1988). At Henderson, LHDs load ore from draw points, tram to an ore pass, dump and return, or switch to another draw point. An autonomous LHD must sense vehicle position along the route, relate sensor data to stored-map information, to determine location, follow drift center lines, plan paths between dump position and initiate appropriate control commands, sense vehicle operating status and vehicle health, key on features or targets for special tasks like high speed turns, perform end of travel tasks (loading and dumping), and detect and avoid obstacles. These goals are similar to those for shuttle cars, trucks, and front-end loaders. Therefore, much of the technology is transferable. Each Henderson LHD extracts six to 40 dippers from each of a series of draw points. The LHD transports the ore to an ore pass within 55 m (180 ft) of the draw point, making the longest round trip 110 m (360 ft). The LHDs have very fast hydraulic dumping and loading systems that reduce the round trip cycle to less than one minute. Even though the LHD is capable of 500 trips per shift, the average production is 300 dippers. Man trip and lunch reduce available operating time to 6.5 hours per shift. Mucking difficulties (setting large boulders aside), operator breaks for activities like talking shop, and cleaning and smoothing roads further reduce operating time. Supervised autonomy can reduce the number of operating units by increasing operating time per shift since computer controlled machines can operate during lunch and between shifts and reduce operator errors. If dippers per shift increase from 300 to 350 (long-range goals are 500 dippers per shift), constant production requires only 10 operating LHDs and two spares. Manpower requirements drop from 24 to four by controlling five machines from one workstation. A review of technology available from the Autonomous Land Vehicle, the Advanced Ground Vehicle Technology, the Ground Surveillance Robot, and other programs, show the following differences between others work and mining industry needs: •If we focus initially on mobile haulage vehicles, we can navigate from a map. We do not need to explore. •We can modify the environment to reduce the navigation requirements. •We have a harsher environment than any of the research programs have encountered. •Our equipment must operate faster and more precisely than present AVs. •Our equipment must operate reliably over long periods of time. •We must have better onboard machine health monitoring and diagnostics. •The AV programs do not address geosensing. •The major AV programs are not cost-effective. For example, we cannot afford the computer power for robust image processing, yet. To computer control an LHD, we must replace the guidance and monitoring skills of experienced operators with sensors, computing hardware, interfaces, and several software mod¬ules. DEVELOPMENT OF MONEY AND MONEY STANDARDS This chapter is concerned with the rise, and then the decline and fall, of gold and silver as monetary metals. As a first step in tracing the history of this process, it is necessary to consider the nature of money, and the manner in which different forms of money have developed over the centuries. The origins of money go back into deepest antiquity. Once men ceased to be pure nomads and entered into even a rudimentary form of society such as clans or tribes, money had to be invented The first step was barter as farmers or hunters swapped their surplus products for things produced by artisans such as shoes, clothing, and simple tools. But such barter trading is inconvenient even in primative societies It is difficult to match up buyer and seller at any point in time There are problems in arriving at viable and acceptable terms of exchange. The accumulation of savings-wealth-is complicated. No one can be sure that a pile of furs, or wheat, or certainly fish or game can be used in the future to trade for other goods or services. So even prehistoric man saw the need for money. There was a need first for something to serve as a medium of exchange This was an essential first step in the process of specialization-or the division of labor. A farmer, a hunter, or a shoemaker could only devote his full efforts to his trade if he could be sure that he could exchange his surplus production for the other things he needed for existence. This required a medium of exchange-a form of money which would be broadly acceptable. Money was needed for two other reasons Some system of market prices was essential to facilitate the exchange of goods and services. This required some form of common denominator-some standard of value-to govern the exchange process. And there was also need for something to serve as a store of value, a place to put any excess production (savings) with the assurance that it can be used in the future to acquire a general range of goods and services. As a result, money, in one form or another, developed at a very early state in civilization. Yet the centuries have been marked by a search for a form of money which will possess in full measure all of the attributes in money-a reliable and universally acceptable medium of exchange, standard of value, and store of value. -A wide variety of things have been used as money at one time or another: shells, beads, stones, feather, metals, and even the teeth of sharks and dogs. Some of these things were obviously of little or no practical value. They were used because people had confidence in their continued acceptance as a medium of exchange. This examination of Pacific Northwest (Idaho, Montana, Ore on, and Washington) ferrous scrap-industry opera ions, principally those in Oregon and Washington, points out factors influencing the supply and consumption of scrap materials, such as the complete dependence of steel ingot producers in these States on scrap as a metal raw material and the sizable quantity of scrap exported from Seattle and Portland to Japan. The pattern of the industry is presented as a movement of materials from their diverse sources to the consuming market. The geographic locations of the consuming industries in relation to the area generating scrap materials and the movement pattern of the supply from source to destination strongly influences the cost of the commodity. The best measure of the scrap supply available in an area is experience in terms of how much scrap was withdrawn at a given price. Scrap availability is not finite, because the return of materials as scrap is secular and influenced by constantly varying market conditions. Steel ingot producers use 75 percent of the approximate 500,000 tons of scrap consumed in Oregon and Washington; steel foundries take 15 percent of the total; and iron foundries, ferroalloy plants, and other miscellaneous consumers utilize the remainder. Also, from 1955 to 1960 an average of about 200,000 tons has been exported annually from Oregon and Washington. The foreign exports are supplemented by lesser .shipments to other steel producing States, principally in the western United States. From 1955 to 1960 the preferred and higher value heavy melting scrap grades accounted for about 60 percent of total withdrawals which varied between 600,000 and 950,000 tons annually. Total scrap withdrawals from Oregon and Washington are projected to 1.8 million tons by 1985, 60 percent (1.1 million tons) of which will be heavy melting grades. No. 1 heavy melting scrap is most attractive to scrap consumers at $35 per ton or less. Price-supply relationships compared with projected scrap requirements indicate future prices possibly over $35 per ton. High prices over a long period could motivate the Pacific Northwest scrap consumers to produce steel from iron ore. However, technologic changes taking place at integrated steel plants could reduce scrap withdrawals from the Pacific Northwest, which might keep the scrap price sufficiently attractive to obviate production of competitive iron products by the Pacific Northwest scrap consumers.

Coal is a low-cost and high-calorific-value fuel. The coal mining industry worldwide has been suffering from severe accidents due to coal dust explosion hazards since its inception. Statistically, it was observed that 12,489 fatalities had occurred in 104 reported mining accidents from coal dust explosions during 1900–2020. There are numerous methods for detection, prevention, and control of coal dust explosions in mines. The underground mining environment is unpredictable and has an array of variables. These undulating factors make it difficult to prevent or control the coal dust explosion hazard. However, coal mining is done aggressively throughout the world, especially in developing countries as coal is a major source of thermal energy used in power plants contributing to about 38% (IEA, (2019), World Energy Outlook, IEA, Paris https:// www. iea. org/ repor ts/ world- energy- outlo ok- 2019.) of world electricity. Worldwide, coal dust explosibility studies are carried out in experimental mines, laboratories, and simulations. The complexity, lack of proper infrastructure, and unavailability of laboratory equipment sometimes make it difficult to study coal dust explosibility. The authors have discussed in detail and proposed that the CFD modelling can be a viable option for studying and evaluating coal dust explosibility.

A simplified, routine method for determining lithium in lithium-bearing rock is presented. The sample is decomposed by repeated treatments with nitric, hydrofluoric, and perchloric acids. Since this procedure does not appreciably dissolve beryl, interference by beryllium (the principal interfering cation) is minimized for most samples. The salts are brought into solution with water and enough citric acid-ammonium citrate buffer is added to make the final volumetric dilution 0.20 M with respect to citrate. The addition of citrate greatly reduces anion interference in the hydrogen-oxygen flame, slightly increases the intensity of the lithium 671 millimicron emission line, and reduces the effect of most of the interfering cations to the extent that analytical separations are not necessary. The accuracy of results of single determinations of lithium in a pegmatite containing spodumene, lithium-bearing mica, and beryl are approximately equal to that obtained by other flame methods, INTRODUCTION This investigation was undertaken in Bureau of Mines laboratories to develop a reliable, rapid, routine analytical method for determining lithium in lithium-bearing minerals. The requirements of the procedure were that the method should be applicable to the analysis of a variety of lithium-bearing ores and test products, and the results would be reasonably accurate for materials containing 0.05 to 8 percent Li20.

The objective of this work is to provide a detailed review and a list of references in chronological order, comprising 80 recent technical papers, on the use of discrete-event simulation (DES) modeling in mining engineering. In this article, the review papers of published mine simulation projects through 2007 are summarized, and then a comprehensive review of individual articles published from 2008 to 2015 is presented. This survey work also includes analyses of the simulation tools used in the published projects, mining types and applications in order to assess these key features and evaluate the recent state of research in mine DES simulation. In addition, an interactive map visualization for the locations of the simulated projects is made available on a website to benefit current and prospective scholars in the field. The results of this investigation revealed that the most common application of DES in mining had been mining equipment selection and analysis, while ore processing and risk management projects were less frequently reported. The results also showed that modeling surface mines were in the majority, but the trend of publications for underground mine simulations had also increased. According to the results, ARENA was the most popular simulation software package, but several simulation tools that were only used once or twice in the mining projects are also included in this review.

Though the first patent on a bucket wheel excavator (BWE) was granted in 1881 in the US, this technology was developed in Germany to the high standards of today. The combination of these three types of equipment in the open pits of the Federal Republic of Germany has made lignite the cheapest energy source for power generation, despite the low heating value of German lignite on the order of 8500 kJ/kg (3600 Btu/lb) only. Comparing the costs for fuels used in power generating on the basis of their heating value, the relation between lignite, high quality black coal, and imported crude oil is on the order of 1 to 1.5 to 2.5, hence highly in favour of lignite.

History In approaching the subject of diamond-drilling practice, a brief history of the origin and development of the diamond drill may be of interest. The use of black diamonds for boring holes in rock was discovered in 1863 by Rudolph Leschot, a French engineer. In 1864, he employed a diamond bit to bore holes for blasting purposes in the construction of the Mont Cenis tunnel between France and Italy. The method was introduced and developed in the United States in the late sixties. The first deep hole was drilled for coal in 1870, near Pottsville, Penn., by M. C. Bullock. This hole was seven hundred and fifty feet deep. It can be inferred that the diamond drill was introduced into Canada in 1871, when a bore-hole, known as Harper's bore-hole, was drilled for coal at Springhill, Cumberland county, Nova Scotia; and at the old Silver Islet mine, near Port Arthur, the diamond drill was in use as early as 1872. Diamond Drills While M. C. Bullock was developing the diamond drill for exploratory work, the Sullivan Machine Company, of Claremont, N.H., was developing the diamond channelers and gadders for quarry work. These quarry machines were very successful until the high price of black diamonds became prohibitive. In 1878, Albert Ball, chief engineer of the Sullivan Machine Company, designed the Sullivan diamond drill so well known today. The first of these drills went to the Lake Superior iron ranges. After 1880, use of the diamond drill expanded rapidly and spread to all parts of the world where exploratory work was being done. In recent years, the type of diamond drill has not changed much, but better material is going into its construction. Steel castings have replaced cast-iron. Ball and roller bearings are now used instead of brasses and babbits. Gun lubrication has eliminated the oil-can. These improvements make a drill that can be operated for long periods without expense for repairs.
