Riachuelo Lot 3 forms part of a sanitation programme being implemented in Argentina to relieve the Riachuelo river basin from its current contamination. The programme, by far the most important in its kind in the country during the last decades, will expand the sewage capacity of Buenos Aires and will benefit an area of 4.3 millions inhabitants by intercepting a number of waste water discharges and conveying them to a new treatment plant prior to final discharge into the Rio de la Plata. The project foresees amongst other works the construction of an onshore 48 m deep shaft at the outlet of the treatment plant plus a 4,3 m inner diameter outfall tunnel of 12 km length. The last 1.5 km of the alignment is fitted with 34 vertical risers jacked from inside the tunnel to allow the discharge and dilution of the treated effluent into the Rio de la Plata. This paper describes the peculiarities and challenges, both in terms of design and in terms of construction, of the outfall tunnel, which was entirely bored under the Rio de la Plata using a 5.2 m cut diameter Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM). On one hand, the tunnel segmental lining was designed to work in tension during the system flow rate peaks while on the other the tunnel excavation faced a variety of complex conditions, such as crossing water bearing permeable soft ground formations and advancing at face pressures in excess of 3,5 bars for the entire route.

A shield on a tunneling machine has two basic purposes. Firstly to provide temporary support in unstable ground, maintaining the integrity of the bore and protecting the operators, and secondly, in conjunction with other sealing devices, to prevent the ingress of water. In any specific tunnel, unstable ground and water may or may not occur together. Further, there are a number of different ground behaviors that may be termed unstable and these must be defined in order to determine the most suitable type of machine. Beyond the shield itself, the cutterhead and the mucking system design are critical in successfully traversing difficult geology. In any but the shortest tunnels, variations in the geological conditions and the requirement of an acceptable advance rate can impose increasing degrees of sophistication in the machine design. In this paper we will review current designs of shielded type machines and their application, and discuss new developments which blend hard and soft ground tunneling technology. We will also indicate that in some conditions, although first impressions seem to favor a shielded machine, in fact an open gripper TBM may be the wisest choice.

This paper outlines the evolution of managing high consequence risk scenarios in BHP Coal, with particular focus on managing the stability of an endwall that is adjacent to a public infrastructure corridor running through a Central Queensland coalmine. BHP Coal developed a Geotechnical Consequence Register after industry failures identified shortcomings in traditional risk assessment practices. Traditional risk assessments consider the consequence and likelihood of a geotechnical event occurring under normal operational conditions. As such, the risk rating for a high consequence, low likelihood failure may fall within the acceptable range, even where a lack of meaningful geological data exists due to the area being off lease or outside of mining reserves. The Geotechnical Consequence Register lists all geotechnical failure scenarios of high consequence, identifies if current controls are adequate, and highlights if specific Geotechnical Management Plans are required. This case study reviews a failure scenario that was identified through the geotechnical consequence register. The scenario had previously been considered low likelihood and subsequently driving a low risk; however, the likelihood ranking was impacted by a lack of geological data outside of the mining lease and predominately informed by an acceptable historical slope behaviour. Additional exploration identified previously unmapped faulting which increased the risk rating. The requirement to develop a specific management plan resulted in an increase in the required factor of safety, design changes, the implementation of additional monitoring and a corresponding monitoring Trigger Action Response Plans (TARP). In the case study area, the initiation of a geotechnical instability was identified early through the increased monitoring program. The instability was successfully managed and any impact to the infrastructure corridor off lease was prevented. BHP Coal has used the Geotechnical Consequence Register for several years to identify and assess high consequence geotechnical failure scenarios. In some areas this has justified additional exploration, more stringent design acceptance criteria and an increased level of geotechnical monitoring. The process has been successful in ensuring that geotechnical risk is controlled in areas that often receive less attention than active production areas.

The Silicon Valley Clean Water (SVCW) Gravity Pipeline (GP) is the first Progressive Design Build (PDB) tunnel completed in North America. As part of the Regional Environmental Sewer Conveyance Upgrade (RESCU) Program, the tunnel is a key component to replacing and rehabilitating components of the existing conveyance system in San Mateo County, California. The GP consists of a large diameter Fiberglass Reinforced Polymer Mortar (FRPM) pipe installed inside a 4.1 m (13.5 ft) inside diameter, 5.3 km (3.3 mile) long precast concrete segmentally lined tunnel. The tunnel was constructed using a 4.6 m (15.2 ft) diameter Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) through heterogenous silts, clays and sands. Construction included two separate TBMlaunches from a centrally located access shaft, and a tunnel alignment below but in close proximity to very soft Young Bay Mud. Settlement criteria and mitigation strategies focused on protection of an existing 1.42 m (56 inch) diameter force main and adjoining structures along the alignment. This paper discusses the results of the theoretical settlement analysis versus the actual observed ground movements, while also presenting mitigation measures and adjustments made during tunneling to reduce the risks of adverse settlement.

The ISMS program provided for the development and demonstration of equipment modifications for improved safety in both conventional and continuous coal mining systems. This report documents the success of the program in identifying accident hazards in underground coal mines with 4-to 8-foot seam heights, in designing modifications to reduce the hazards, and in demonstrating improved safety through extended underground use of the ISMS equipment.

Recent Bureau of Mines research in earth grounding safety is documented in three separate papers. First, guidelines for the design of a 5- ohm borehole ground are presented. Next, an inexpensive practical means to construct a low-resistance bed in high-resistivity soil is described. Finally, a procedure that employs a commercial resistivity meter to measure shock potentials around grounded objects is explained step-by-step. These papers complement the material presented at an earlier technology transfer seminar and published as IC 8767.

This paper describes the key circumstances of the underground coal gasification (UCG) process, which is planned to be carried out in the Polish hard coal mine ?Wieczorek?. The construction and field tests of a UCG pilot plant have key issues that need to be addressed to realize the research project goal: the elaboration of a highly effective technology of fuel and electricity production. The project will conduct several monthly tests of gasification in the pilot geo-reactor, which will be constructed based on the results of laboratory tests. The realization of the process requires numerous appropriately prepared actions adjusted to natural conditions in the hard coal deposit. Based on scientific principles, it is necessary to elaborate the procedures related to the location of the UCG installation (including its legal and safety aspects), and to perform a technical risk analysis. In addition, it is necessary to determine the required mining, geological, technical, economic and organizational circumstances, while at the same time considering the real but constantly changing process conditions.

THE opinion, based upon geological knowledge, that certain areas within the Province of Nova Scotia might yield commercial quantities of petroleum, is not new. It dates back to at least 1864, when the Pioneer Oil and Salt Company drilled some shallow holes in search of oil near lake Ainslie, Cape Breton. As a matter of fact, several companies were engaged in oil exploratory work near lake Ainslie at about that time; included among them were the Inverness Oil and Mining Company, the Victoria Oil Company, the American Oil Company, and the Cape Breton Oil and Mining Company. Oil exploration by these and other companies was conducted sporadically on Cape Breton island until 1914. In several instances, the depth of the test holes exceeded 1,000 feet; the deepest was carried to 3,260 feet. The Lake Ainslie area was selected because oil seepages were present along certain sections of the lake shore, but the tests that were drilled to tap the oil-bearing zone failed to yield anything of commercial value. Currently, there are three areas in Nova Scotia wherein active exploratory work is being conducted, namely, at Pugsley Siding close to Amherst; at Kennetcook, Hants county; and near Mabou, Inverness county. The Pugsley Siding test is being drilled by the Sun Oil Company, of Philadelphia; the work at Kennetcook is under the direction of the Nova Scotia Oil and Gas Company; two relatively deep holes were drilled by the Lion Oil Refining Company in 1944 near Mabou, and, as a result of the additional geological information derived therefrom, another test probably will be drilled by this Company in the same area. Aside from these activities in the search for petroleum, the oil possibilities of several other sections of the Province are being studied by means of surface geological mapping.

"This paper, an update to the 2003 paper titled "Knowledge, Technology and Profit" (Twigge-Molecey, 2003) analyzes 45 "problem projects" from the mining and metals industry over the last eleven years representing $133 billion in CAPEX. The projects have been designated as "problem projects" as they did not meet their owner’s initial expectations for project performance as defined in the paper. This paper explores some of the challenges that were present, through interviews with the knowledgeable individuals that were familiar with the projects and investigations using publically available information. The aim of the exercise was to identify the key challenges faced by the projects, and the contributing factors that led to the project failures so that the lessons can be applied to future projects.The project challenges have been categorized into four themes, technical, organizational, environmental & social and missing "homework" prior to board approval. Of noteworthy interest is that environmental permitting aspects have risen to become a significant and notable contributor to problem projects in 11 years from 2003 to 2014. It is further observed that many projects have been challenged by increasing size and complexity and with execution in more remote locations since the previous paper.It is a reality that every project will face challenges. Some projects are simply more challenging than others, and success or failure of the project is often determined by whether the project team is fully prepared to respond to the challenges. This in turn is largely dependent on whether the project "homework" was adequately completed and considered for all aspects of the project."

"In projects involving resource development and plant optimization, the use of in-mine geophysics can deliver considerable benefit. The value proposition lies in using very high resolution downhole measurements to model process-plant outcomes. The calibration procedure used to convert in-situ physical properties into process engineering parameters is illustrated using two iron ore projects. Data correction was related either to orebody structure or mineral formation. The deliverable from this approach is a series of high-definition sections indicating the variability of ore delivered to a front-end separation plant and parameters for mine scheduling and stockpile design needed for maximum product yield.RÉSUMÉ Dans des projets de développement des ressources et d’optimisation de l’usine, l’utilisation de la géophysique minière peut engendrer des bénéfices considérables. La valeur de la proposition réside dans l’utilisation de diagraphies à très haute résolution afin de modéliser les résultats de l’usine de traitement. La procédure d’étalonnage utilisée pour convertir les propriétés physiques in situ en des paramètres d’ingénierie de procédés est illustrée en se basant sur deux projets de minerai de fer. La correction des données porte sur la structure de la masse minérale ou de la formation minérale. Les livrable attendus de cette approche sont une série de sections à haute définition, signalant la variabilité du minerai livré à une usine de séparation de première ligne, des paramètres pour l’échéancier de la mine et la conception des haldes requis pour une production optimale."

Tunnel excavation may induce adverse effects on nearby existing structures/foundations in urban areas. Accurate prediction of tunnelling effects on pile foundations of nearby structures in the urban environment poses a major challenge during design. Several studies have been undertaken to understand the mechanisms of the soil-tunnel-pile interaction, which focused only on influence of tunnelling on nearby existing building and foundations. However, effect of pile loading on existing tunnels did not receive enough research attention so far. So it is essential to measure the response of existing tunnel-lining due to loading on newly constructed pile to assess to the safety against the additional forces/moment caused by pile loading and to evaluate the critical distance for the proposed construction of any structures from the tunnel location. This paper presents result of three-dimensional (3D) finite element analysis carried out in ABAQUS to investigate the effects of pile loading on existing tunnels embedded in cohesive soil. It is found that the effects on tunnel lining depend on horizontal separation distance between pile and tunnel as well as location/elevation of pile tip with respect to tunnel location.

"Located in the state of Colima, Peña Colorada is one of the largest iron ore operations in Mexico. The project is owned in equal parts by ArcelorMittal and Ternium. Though boasting a production capacity of 4.1 Mt/a (4.5 million stpy) of concentrate per year, Peña Colorada is faced with declining ore grades. In order to respond to this situation, Peña Colorada had to expand production even further. This expansion created various challenges that were overcome by the adoption and application of new technology. Examples of these technological innovations are discussed in detail in this article and include improvements in geo-modeling, mine planning, and mine operations. The successful implementation of these technologies paid for itself many times over, and has led to significant improvements in production and performance, while lowering the operating costs and reducing the variance between planning and execution.Project overviewPeña Colorada is a mining company that produces about 30 percent of the iron ore in Mexico. This project generates about 1,200 direct jobs and 3,000 indirect jobs, making a significant contribution to the local economy. Similarly, Peña Colorada invests in its local communities through numerous educational programs, scholarships, university agreements, social development, environmental agreements, etc. Peña Colorada’s operations consist of an open pit mine located in Minatitlán and a pellet plant located in the port city of Manzanillo, as shown in Fig. 1. Technological innovationsMost mining projects around the world typically follow the logic of “mining the next best ore.” Consequently, head grades tend to decline over the life of the mine. In the case of Peña Colorada, a decline in head grade combined with a decline in iron ore prices forced the operation to adapt to a new business environment and adopt new technologies to face these challenges. However, the first step along this process was to increase the confidence and reliability of the resource model. This task involved additional drillhole campaigns coupled with more detailed modeling techniques. Once the block model was completed, new optimization studies and production schedules were evaluated with new optimization tools that improved many aspects of the mine plan. The Peña Colorada block model has undergone 3 expansions to reflect additional information not available in the past. The model has expanded to the East and Southwest. The latest model expansion increased the total number of benches to 98 as a result of positive exploration results. Similarly, new geotechnical studies were prepared, which provided new guidelines for pit slope design, and new technology was implemented to monitor ground movement and slope stability. Oxide mixtures of nickel (NiO), cobalt (COO) and chromium (Cr203) were prepared with graphite in stoichiometric amounts and the powder mixtures were compacted to produce cylindrical pellets. The composition of chromium oxide in these mixtures were varied. Pressed pellets were reduced in a flowing stream of argon-4% hydrogen gas (500 ml/min). Both slow and rapid heating methods were adopted to raise the temperature of a pellet during reduction of oxides to form superalloy powder. The reduction temperature was varied between. 1523 and 1623K. The effect of heating rate and niobium oxide addition on the microstructure of the superalloy produced was studied by using ordinary light and scanning electron microscopes. New phases formed as a result of reduction were identified by X-ray powder diffraction technique. The mechanism of reduction of oxides together with the microstructure of NiCrCo alloy are discussed. The thermodynamics of formation of ternary alloy phase is elucidated on the basis of binary phase equilibria and Gibbs free energy of mixing data for the constituent alloy compositions.

Rock mass deformability is commonly predicted using correlations with RQD or other indices of rock mass quality, or by extrapolation from large in-situ tests. Based on the probabilistic description of rock masses empirically developed in Part I a new approach was attempted in modeling for predictions of deformability. This approach decomposes the rock mass into spatially variable joints described by probability distributions, and intact rock blocks. Stiffnesses and elastic parameters are associated with the joints and intact blocks respectively, and deformations built up by adding the contributions of each. This model allows relaxation of many of the simplistic geometric assumptions which constrain parallel attempts to model deformation in rock masses. The model has been applied to four standard cases in order to test its results against previously existing models, and to check whether it replicates empirical correlations. When joints are taken as parallel, common empirical correlations are closely approximated by the model output. However, the closeness to empirical correlation breaks down when variability of the jointing geometry is increased.

The emphasis is on the measurement procedure and the interpretation of the measurement rather than on the instrument itself.] The failure to properly sample for methane is a major contributing factor to methane explosion risk. Sampling errors are most likely to occur at mines or tunnels where the presence of methane is not suspected or during nonroutine tasks at mines or tunnels known to have gas. More specific information on methane sampling at continuous miner sections is in Chapter 3. Chapters 4 and 5 discuss sampling at longwall sections, and Chapter 14 discusses sampling at tunnels. METHANE DETECTORS FOR MINING Many models of gas detectors are available to measure methane concentrations, as well as most of the other contaminant gases found in mines and tunnels. An example is the iTX Multi-Gas Monitor, a portable gas detector available from Industrial Scientific Corp., Oakdale, PA. This handheld instrument measures several gases simultaneously. The cost (2004) ranges from $1,300 to $2,200, depending on the number of gases measured. Similar instruments are available from other manufacturers. Most methane detectors used in mining use a catalytic heat of combustion sensor to detect methane and other combustible gases. These have been proven through many years of reliable operation. The tensile test results of as-cast A356.2 grain-refined alloy castings show that the tensile strength can be improved by strontium modification (`SrM'), superheating at 900°C OM, and melt thermal treatment of the Sr-modified alloy melt (`SrMTT'). Both SrM and SrMTT processes can greatly improve the ductility (percent elongation) of the as-cast alloy. During solution heat treatment at 540°C, eutectic Si particles undergo fragmentation, spheroidization, and coarsening, thereby affecting their morphology. The effects of solution heat treatment on the tensile properties of the variously treated A356.2 alloy castings can be summed up as follows: the yield strength of the castings is significantly improved after 8 h solution heat treatment due to the precipitation of Mg2Si, after which it remains more or less the same with the further increase in solution treatment time up to 80 h; the ultimate tensile strength is also greatly improved within the first 8 h of solution heat treatment and then remains at the same level thereafter, up to 80h of solution treatment. The improvement in UTS is attributed to Mg2Si precipitation, dissolution of Si within the aluminum matrix, and changes in the Si particle morphology (spheroidization). The ductility of the as-received grain refined non-modified (`NM'), grain refined and superheated at 900°C (`SH'), and melt thermal-treated grain refined (`MTT') A356.2 alloy castings can be improved considerably with solution heat treatment e.g. from ~6% in the as-cast non-modified casting to ~10% after 80 h solution treatment.

On the basis of detailed studying of mineral structure of ore and treatment products it is established that the given ore refers to oxidized Pb-Zn vein-disseminated ores. Technological special features of the basic ore minerals and the reasons causing their obstinateness that is defined by following features are revealed, presence at dominating quantity difficult to float lead minerals: mimetesite (9.67%), green lead ore(0.48%); non float: bindheimite (2.16%) and plumbojarosite (0.36%) and high assay of oxides and hydrous ferric oxides; also thin, emulsive and submicroscopic segregations of the defined minerals in swamp ore. As a result of researches the scheme of gravitational-flotation treatment was conducted in semi-industrial scale. It allows to receive two concentrates from ore: a lead gravitational concentrate of mark ??-4 with the assay of 55.5 % of Pb and 0.77 % of Zn; and a Pb concentrate of mark ??-7 with assay of Pb of 40.97 % and Zn of 1.39 %. The total assay of Pb in concentrates makes 81 %. The efficiency offered by gravitational-flotation schemes is defined by possibility for recovery of big impregnated lead minerals under gravitation. The use of this method of gravitation has allowed to recover such mineral as beudantide and to exclude irrevocable losses of lead in tails which are connected with this mineral. Scientific value of the presented researches is connected with the fact the problem of extraction of the oxidized minerals of Bb and Zn is rather difficult and insufficiently studied. "The historical background to the project dates back to the mid-30s with the discovery of surface sulphide showings in the Cape Smith-Wakeham Bay ultramafic belt. In the mid1950s, orderly exploration commenced with an extensive work program by Asarco, INCO, Lemoine, Falconbridge and Raglan Nickel Mines Ltd. on exploration permits. In 1966, Falconbridge and Raglan Nickel Mines interests merged. Extensive exploration, drilling, under- ground delineation of the Donaldson orebody and the construction of basic infrastructure such as camps, airfield, road links from Douglas Harbour to Donaldson and Katinniq, a distance of 60 km, were completed.Production project design at that time consisted of plans for a 50 000 mt per year nickel mining and concentrating operation, including a 2000 person community and smelter at Douglas Harbour. These plans unravelled in the mid-70s due to high capital costs, poor nickel market conditions and the realization that the Raglan orebodies were not large enough to economically support the construction of green field smelter and refinery facilities for processing Raglan production. Nickel market conditions in the late 70s and early 80swere generally poor, resulting in further delays on production plans.While recognizing the very high potential to discover increased tonnages of high grade(3% Ni) in excess of 20 million tonnes, the project was deferred into the late 80s when a serious re-evaluation of exploration potential occurred and the requirement to prove up additional reserves resulted in an underground exploration program at Katinniq covering the period 1990-1992."

"High costs, both in terms of human resources and financial costs, have long been the end result of accidents involving vehicles which continue to occur too often throughout our industry.For example, radio remote control LHDs too often seriously injure their operators in underground operations. Costly efforts are required by mine owners to provide safety bays and platforms from which their operators can work safely. In open pit operations, large heavy haulers have too frequently backed over vehicles or turned into vehicles unfortunate enough to be situated in their large blind spots. These are just two examples of situations that have occurred again and again under similar circumstances.Meanwhile, electronic methods of detecting proximity to vehicles have continued to develop. The time has come for the industry to think “outside the box” to evaluate whether many of these new methods can solve these recurring problems.This note takes a look at various types of proximity detection technologies that are in use today in other industries, and discusses the various potential applications within our industry."

During the months of April and May 1992, the Phelps Dodge Hidalgo smelter underwent a major turnaround. This was the third such turnaround in the life of the facility which was commissioned in 1976. During the third furnace campaign, the smelter processed 5.2 million tons of concentrate producing 2.6 billion pounds of anode copper over a 7.5 year period. The critical path on the fifty-nine (59) day turnaround schedule was the reconstruction of the Outokumpo flash furnace which integrated some modifications with standard rebuild practices. Modifications included incorporation of horizontal cooling jackets throughout the furnace settler as well as the installation of castable refractory in the reaction and uptake shafts.
