Flotation operations in Sudbury, Ontario, seeking to separate pentlandite and chalcopyrite from mixed sulphide deposits, produce pyrrhotite tailings that have been disposed of in tailings ponds for over 50 years. These reactive tailings are viewed as waste, despite containing ~0.8 wt% Ni, and represent an environmental liability because of their acid mine drainage (AMD) potential. Given the large quantities of pyrrhotite currently stored in Sudbury, and declining ore grades elsewhere, these tailings have shifted from being viewed as a waste to a potential resource. Recent advances in the bioleaching of low-grade sulphide ores have raised the prospect of bioleaching as a potential low-cost processing option. However optimization of this proposed process requires a thorough understanding of the mineralogy of the pyrrhotite tailings that would be leached. The work presented here addresses the characterization of two distinct Sudbury pyrrhotite tailings, namely from the Vale and Glencore operations, using electron microprobe, XRD and QEMSCAN analysis. "Hudbay Minerals’ Flin Flon process plant produces a copper concentrate and zinc concentrate from the three ores it processes: 777, Reed and Lalor. Unlike many Cu-Zn ores, the average Zn: Cu ratio in feed is around 2:1, whereas, in many Cu-Zn separation plants the Zn: Cu feed grade is substantially higher than 2:1. The lower Zn: Cu in plant feed is a challenge for limiting Zn recovery to the Cu concentrate. While total recoveries of Cu and Zn at Flin Flon are very good; selectivity is the key challenge and small changes in ore or plant, can result in quite variable Zn recovery to Cu concentrate, and accordingly, Zn recovery to Zn concentrate. Magnetic conditioning has been shown to be selective between the two paramagnetic minerals chalcopyrite and sphalerite. Statistical testing of magnetic conditioning was undertaken at Flin Flon with the objective of increasing Cu recovery to Cu concentrate without increasing the Zn recovery to Cu concentrate - in effect increasing Cu-Zn selectivity. This has been achieved elsewhere with magnetic conditioning with the probable mechanism being an increase in fine chalcopyrite recovery, and a reduction in entrained, ultrafine, non-activated sphalerite to Cu concentrate. The results did indeed show an increase in Cu recovery to Cu concentrate of 0.8% to high confidence, but the decrease in Zn recovery to Cu concentrate was not to high confidence. This is effectively an increase in Cu: Zn selectivity in the Cu circuit – higher Cu recovery with no change in Zn recovery. However, while there was an increase of 1% in Zn recovery to Zn concentrate with magnetic conditioning, the variability in this parameter meant that this increase, though larger in magnitude than the Cu result, was not to high confidence."

Incident investigation is of utmost importance in most high-risk industries. This study was undertaken to study the content of past investigation reports to determine the effectiveness of the incident investigations. The study uses a semi-quantitative method to assess the effectiveness of incident investigations in the Ghanaian mining industry by evaluating the quality of past investigation reports. The assessment tool consists of 5 elements with several indicators and rating scales for assessing the quality of an investigation report as a measure of the effectiveness of the investigation. The method was applied to 304 investigation reports of 3 Ghanaian large-scale gold mines, and the results correlated with incidence rates of the mines to determine if any relationship existed. The results showed that the mines differ significantly in the quality of their investigation reports, suggesting differences in the effectiveness of their investigations. In addition, the incidence rates of the mines negatively correlated with some elements of the assessment tool. In general, the method was found useful and revealed areas where improvement is needed. INTRODUCTION The importance of learning from incidents is well documented in the literature. For instance, some scholars regard learning from incidents as important for improving safety [1,2]. Thus, many organisations spend considerable resources in identifying lessons from incidents and subsequently on the process of improvement that follows the identification of lessons. It is therefore important for such organisations to determine the effectiveness of their learning from incidents processes, in order to identify specific areas where improvements are needed, so that interventions can be as specific as possible. The learning from incidents process models the plan-act-check-do approach of management systems, often consisting of four major stages, namely; data collection and incident analysis, planning interventions, implementing interventions and follow-ups and evaluation [3,2]. The investigating and analysis of incidents have been regarded as one of the vital stages of the learning process since it is the stage where lessons are identified [3,2,4]. It has also been noted elsewhere in the literature that results of the previous stage of the learning process are important for the next stage [3]. For example, ineffective incident analyses could result in the planning of ineffective remedial measures. One of the primary aims of incident investigations is to identify lessons from previous incidents which when implemented can prevent future recurrences or minimise the effects of future incidents. There is thus the need for organisations to assess the quality of their investigations periodically since it is one of the means they adopt to improve safety and the quality of remedial measures to some extent depends on the effectiveness of the investigations. Although previous studies [5,2] have assessed the effectiveness of the learning process, and some aspects of the learning process, such as incidents reporting, there is less focus on the effectiveness of incident investigations. The research described in this paper was therefore conducted to contribute to this gap, focusing more closely on incident investigation reports.

The Bureau of Mines conducted field investigations in two underground mines to determine the actual loads to which bearing plates were subjected when installed in conjunction with full-column resin-grouted bolts and the roof movements generated by the applied loads. Measured loads indicate that the bearing plate is an integral part of the support system. Vertical displacement gauges installed to monitor roof displacements in the test sites show that the highest degrees of loading occur in conjunction with the largest amounts of movement.

Anomalous geologic or stress conditions ahead of the longwall face can cause great harm to both the individual miner and the mining operation as a whole. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has been developing seismic tomography techniques to image the panel ahead of the face. This paper presents the results of a field effort in which a 60-m (200-ft) segment of a longwall panel containing a fault zone was surveyed daily as the face approached. Stress distribution, geologic structure, and dynamic elastic properties within the panel were plotted and compared to static laboratory measurements. The surveys successfully imaged an anomalous stress concentration, likely influenced by the presence of the fault zone. The calculated dynamic physical properties generally agreed with laboratory measurements.

"TBM cutter life evaluation in abrasive granitic rocks is a very important issue, especially in pressurized face tunneling with mixshield TBM for which the planning of costly interventions becomes crucial. This paper presents an overview of methodologies for cutter life evaluation in rock. A comparative study is performed to indicate the predictability of cutter life evaluation methods based on detail data from the NS3 tunnel project in Singapore. A new model is developed based upon the cutter wear information of eight TBM tunnels from around the world. New methods are proposed to evaluate the optimum intervention interval length and the number of worn-out disc cutters for a tunnel project. Finally, two new laboratory tests in the evaluation of disc cutter abrasion, including a full-scale and a small-scale test, are introduced, and their test results are discussed. INTRODUCTION The issue of wear evaluation for hard rocks has been extensively studied in drilling and pavement industry. In this regard, several tests and evaluation methods have been proposed to estimate or evaluate the state of tool life (e.g. bit life for drilling). In the case of TBM tunneling, tool wear may depend on several factors such as mineral composition, strength, or type of cutting, but as the abrasion is usually the major mechanism for the tool wear in hard rock, the developed methods for cutter wear or cutter life evaluation are mostly based on the abrasion indices such as Cerchar Abrasivity Index (CAI). This paper attempts to review the major methodologies for disc cutter wear and life evaluation and to propose new methods to evaluate cutter life and intervention interval evaluation based on detail information of a mixshield tunnel project in Singapore as well as general information of some other projects from Iran, Italy, South Africa, and France. As the laboratory tests are crucial in the process of evaluation, two new lab tests are developed and used to inspect suitability of the new proposed model for disc cutter wear evaluation."

"Technical publications in the field of mining and metallurgy have existed for a long time. Recent developments in electronic publishing on websites make it possible to disseminate information more widely and cost effectively than before. Professional societies have an opportunity to serve their members and their industry by publishing high-quality peer-reviewed papers on their websites as well as in printed form. Older publications can be scanned, and optical character recognition can be used to provide searchable text. Various business models exist around this process. This paper outlines the approach used by the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM) to provide free open access to their journal papers and conference proceedings, as well as the work being done by OneMine.org to collect technical papers from a number of international societies and make them available to subscribers via a large database. An approach is outlined that should be of benefit to authors, readers, and society at large.INTRODUCTIONGeorgius Agricola (1494-1555) was not the first writer on the subjects of mining and metallurgy, but is well known as the author of De Re Metallica (‘of things metallic’ or ‘on the nature of metals’), a book that documents and illustrates the observations he made in the course of his extensive travels in the 1500s. Agricola wrote extensively about mining methods and metallurgical processes that were in place in the Middle Ages. The original Latin version of De Re Metallica was published in 1556, the year after Agricola died. It was translated into English by Herbert Hoover, a mining engineer and later President of the United States, and his wife Lou Henry Hoover, a geologist and classicist. The English version of De Re Metallica was published in 1912."

In this study, the effect of using conventional crushing and high-pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) in combination with dry or wet milling was investigated using a base-metal sulphide (BMS) sphalerite and a platinum group mineral (PGM) ore to determine how these processes affect the flotation performance. In sphalerite, irrespective of the crushing procedure (HPGR or conventional), dry milling resulted in the highest grades and recoveries of zinc, whereas in PGMs, similar treatment produced the poorest results. The results were investigated further by the effect of factors such as percentage liberation and particle size on the flotation results.

The concept of risk management is applied to multiple aspects of the mining lifecycle including safety, mine design, business plan—anything that affects getting the ore to the mill for production. However, risk management is not a topic that can readily be taught in universities. Many situations require knowledge gained from experience to know how this impacts current and future operations. Recent graduates, who must develop and apply decisions based on geotechnical monitoring, likely have not developed “operational experience” and may not be aware of options and typical applications. Thorough resources that explain different monitoring systems, and when and how to implement them, are available for geotechnical professionals. Accessibility to this information can often cause information overload, leaving one unsure of where to start, without knowing where to start. This paper is intended to serve as a high-level overview of development practices, levels of risk, and risk tolerance for entry-level geotechnical and mining professionals who do not come from a geotechnical background. Summarized detail on typical monitoring practices, types of instrumentation, and how to communicate what the data indicates to key stakeholders are provided.

It. was suggested that this idea •be enlarged upon at forthcoming C.I.M. meetings that would be .attended largely by coal mining engineers.With this in view, a Domestic Heating Forum (1) was featured in the Coal Division programme at the 1951 Annual Western Meeting of the Institute in Calgary, and a much more ambitious programme, highlighted by live demonstrations, was •staged at the combined Annual Western Meeting and Fourth Meeting of District 4 held in Winnipeg in October 1952.With the excellent co-operation of a number of equipment manufacturers and coal companies, and with facilities kindly provided •by the University •of Manitoba authorities, burning demonstrations were• arranged in the Agricultural Engineering Building, on October l 7th. Most geotechnical construction professionals are aware of piling using hydraulic drill rigs and the so-called Kelly drill mode. Kelly drilling has many advantages as it can work with a wide range of tools facing almost all types of soil and rock conditions. Kelly drilling can also deal with diameters up to 10 ft (3.00 m) and bigger or depths of more than 330 ft (100 m). Nonetheless, there is a concern about Kelly drilling as it is a relatively slow installation process. Therefore, an alternative piling method like Cased CFA (CCFA) Piles (Cased Auger Cast Piles) provides a significant advantage in terms of installation performance, schedule and cost saving potentials. Major application for the Cased CFA system is the secant pile wall construction. Against the traditional secant pile wall systems like fully cased bored piles or CFA secant piling the Cased CFA secant pile wall system has the advantage in cost and time against the fully cased system and in quality against the standard CFA system. This paper will describe the methodology and installation process in general as well as first reference projects carried out in the United States. This paper will present the results in cost and schedule saving using this method. In addition, we will also describe the limitations of this method. INTRODUCTION In the changing construction environment, companies are searching for new technologies or improvement of existing technologies to complete their projects in shorter time frames to provide a good economic solution. Especially with the focus of increasing urbanization, the aim of fast construction becomes more and more important. When thinking of piling, most people will have the same picture in mind: that of a hydraulic drill rig working in Kelly drilling mode; however, the perpetual drill rig development provides a number of options for the execution of specialist foundation projects, either for foundations or for pile walls when using single pass applications like CFA, Cased CFA and Full Displacement Piling (FDP). Single pass means, in general, that the tool is pushed and rotated into the ground to the final depth in one stroke. After reaching the final depth, concreting is started and concrete is pumped continuously while the tool is withdrawn.

THE carbonizing properties of one medium- and and five low-volatile coals from West Virginia and one high-volatile A and two medium-volatile coals from Pennsylvania were determined by 800° and 900° C. BM-AGA carbonization tests and expansion tests in the sole-heated oven. Plastic properties of the coals and the yields and quality of their cokes and other carbonization products were determined. The low-volatile coals comprised a mine and a coke-plant sample of Pocahontas No. 6-bed coal from the. Black Eagle No. 1 mine, Wyoming County, W. Va.; a mine sample of Pocahontas No. 6 bed from the Louisville mine, Mercer County, W. Va. ; Davy Sewell bed was sampled at the Twin Branch mine, McDowell County, W. Va.; and Fire Creek bed was sampled at the Dunedin No. 1 mine, Raleigh County, W. Va. The medium-volatile coals were from the Fire Creek bed, Laurel Creek mine, Greenbrier County, W. Va.; Lower Kittanning bed, Springfield No. 4 mine, Cambria County, Pa.; and Upper Kittanning bed, Springfield No. 6 mine, Clearfield County, Pa. The high-volatile A coal represented the Upper and Lower Freeport beds, Kent Nos. 1 and 2 mines, Indiana County, Pa. In addition to the coals listed, high-volatile A coal from the Pittsburgh bed, Warden mine, Allegheny County, Pa., a standard blending coal, was used in blends in this investigation.

Many organizations, including the Bureau of Mines, have made intensive studies of the application of leaching methods to relatively small low-grade disseminated deposits of copper ores, containing both oxide and sulphide minerals. One of the principal difficulties has been to obtain a solvent that could be made at a low cost and would effectively dissolve the copper minerals. Another drawback has been the high initial cost of a plant and the refined type of mechanism ordinarily required by standard practice for carrying out the leaching cycle. The Bureau of Mines has attempted to develop a cheap and efficient solvent that would especially meet the requirements of smaller plants. (See Bibliography.) It has been known that dilute ferric sulphate-sulphuric acid solution is an excellent solvent for most copper minerals, such as chalcocite, bornite, and oxidized forms, but not for chalcopyrite and certain silicates. A method of producing this solution from sulphurous products and waste liquors was developed by the bureau and tried successfully on a test-plant scale at the Southwest Experiment Station in cooperation with the department of mining and metallurgy, University of Arizona, Tucson, Ariz. However, this work did not involve the actual leaching of ores with the solutions thus produced or the cyclic use of the iron solutions in the regenerator cell. Except for certain laboratory tests, in which known impurities were added, no data were available to show the effect on regeneration if accumulations of impurities were built up in the leaching circuit.

Orebodies constitute naturally occurring, commonly highly variable concentrations of minerals in the earth’s crust formed through varying and highly unpredictable processes. Orebody knowledge is a core foundation of a mining company’s asset base underpinning all decisions about Mineral Resource and Ore Reserves, future production, development and ultimately the profitability and competitiveness of a mining enterprise. The decision to invest in a mineral project is usually based upon a techno-economic evaluation of the project and having clear approval pathways to gain local community support and address social and environmental impacts. The main objective of the techno-economic evaluation is to determine the optimum development sequence for the particular orebody in question and to estimate the economic viability of the project and the future return on investment to its stakeholders, balancing the inherent value of the mineral in the ground against the costs of development and market pricing. With the exception of market-driven commodity prices, virtually all revenue and cost estimates fundamentally stem from the understanding and subsequent modelling of the orebody. A reliable estimate of the ore deposit grade and other geological value-drivers is the foundation upon which the business case for future mine development and operation is intricately dependent. Orebody knowledge is, therefore, the fundamental driver of the mineral project cycle, influencing the progression of studies and consequently, the resource company’s ability to declare Exploration Results, Mineral Resources or Ore Reserves which govern the source and cost of funding available to the project. Drilling provides a ‘vector’ to the true nature of the orebody and effectively buys time to manage the technical risk associated with the orebody. Despite its perceived high cost, in both time and money terms, drilling is the only available technology for acquiring the necessary orebody knowledge to support technical and economic studies and to minimise orebody-driven cash flow uncertainty and volatility. However, like all costs, pressure to minimise drilling budgets is ubiquitous across the minerals industry. Paired with inappropriate key performance indicators, drilling is often regarded as a cost to be minimised, rather than an investment to be optimised. Furthermore, as future deposits get deeper and more complex, the collection of orebody knowledge is increasingly on the critical path for project development. The increasing cost of data collection pertaining to these deposits increases the temptation to minimise orebody knowledge gathering at the cost of long-term value as the reduction or postponement of drilling results in greater orebody knowledge risk at all stages of the value chain. Indeed the true cost of the decision to drill less is rarely known until the mine is in operation, well after the mine project evaluation team has moved on. This paper aims to promote orebody knowledge as the fundamental source of endogenous project financial risk and, consequently, its critical importance in project financial evaluation. Furthermore, the report documents experimental research into the development of an econometric model for valuing orebody knowledge. Using the density of drilling data as a proxy measure of orebody knowledge, the proposed approach integrates well-established stochastic grade modelling techniques with the mathematical mechanics of Decoupled Net Present Value (DNPV) which, combined with stochastic grade modelling (conditional simulation), lends itself to the financial International Mining Geology Conference 2022 | Brisbane, Australia and Online | 22–23 March 2022 3 assessment of orebody knowledge risk. Haul truck drivers are at a high risk of developing fatigue due to the monotonous nature of the work and demanding shift rosters. In the mining industry, fatigue is identified as a major contributing factor in several fatal accidents a year. A number of fatigue detection devices are now available, that can contribute to improved fatigue risk management in the mining industry. This paper describes the technology and algorithms behind one particular product which is both predictive and un-obtrusive to the operator. The Advisory System for Tired Drivers (ASTiD), was developed by Fatigue Management International (FMI) in collaboration with the Loughborough Sleep Research Centre (LSRC), both in the United Kingdom. While this system includes a model of the human circadian rhythm as a bias for predicting expected fatigue risk by time of day, it also uses yaw data generated by a solid-state gyroscope in the horizontal plane. Algorithms analyse this data to determine the level of monotony of actual driving conditions and to detect changes in steering control caused by driver fatigue. During normal levels of attention, a haul truck driver applies continuous, small adjustments to the steering wheel. As the level of fatigue increases, steering adjustments become less frequent and more erratic. Differentiating between these modes of control in the highly variable mining environment is accomplished by chromatic processing of the gyroscope data. This paper will go into some detail explaining the principles behind chromatic processing and the specific application of these in detecting fatigue in haul truck operators.Technology in itself is not the solution to addressing operator fatigue, but it plays an important role in ongoing monitoring and maintaining awareness with mining personnel. Furthermore, the specific principles behind ASTiD technology support a risk-based approach to fatigue management, allowing optimisation of the mining operation for productivity as well as safety.

Western Europe is a dynamic region, with an emerging co-operation between the individual nations both politically, economically, technically and scientifically. The European Union, today with 15 member States and with a range of central European States applying for membership, is a catalyst for this Cupertino, using a combination of EU funds, for financing research initiatives, and legislation to enhance development of technology and environmental performance. Europe is a major net importer of metals but with a large potential for own production, in particular in the accession countries. The metals and mining sector is furthermore identified as having a large potential to generate wealth both in todayÆs EU and in the future, widened Union. This paper provides a chart of examples on the many research initiatives presently underway in Europe, addressing environmental issues related to mining. The list of programmes and projects does not claim to be complete; it is rather an illustration on the wideness of the approach, describing various ways for transboundary Cupertino. The approach taken by many of the programmes goes beyond the strict ARD scientific area and therefore only a limited number of the many programmes can be identified as ARD research programmes. Also national programmes, without EU funding, are operating, eg in Sweden, Germany, and UK. The picture is continuously changing with new programmes being commissioned and old ones being completed.

"Estimating and managing the costs of complex infrastructure projects – in the planning/design and construction phases, for both owners and contractors – has been a challenge for decades. The more complex and technologically advanced the project, the greater the uncertainty, including potential risks that are important to owners and contractors, such as:• Cost risks to owners – meeting budget and schedule, maintaining public credibility.• Cost risks to contractors – profit, consequences of loss, impacts to reputation/future work.This concern has been addressed in various ways by the underground construction industry for some time (Reilly, 2001). In particular, while significant advances have been made in cost estimating for the planning and design phases (Reilly et al., 2004), that are important to agencies and political decision-makers, it is not apparent that these advances have been widely adopted for construction cost estimates. The reasons for this may relate to lowbid considerations – any method that tends to increase the contractor’s cost estimate, by including risk or likely costs, could lead to an erosion of the contractor’s competitive position – if others are not similarly required to include such costs.Different cost estimating methods produce different levels of information. Specifically, there is a large difference in the character and depth of information if a deterministic (quantities times price plus a contingency) and risk-based cost methods are used. It is this difference in character and depth of information that is the reason that risk-based cost estimating has potential value for owners and contractors. Figure 1 presents hypothetical cost results from deterministic and risk-based methods and illustrates some of these differences.In Fig. 1, the results for deterministic and risk-based cost estimates are given related to the potential profit or loss for a typical project. As is evident in this example, there is significant potential for costs to be realized that are higher than the proposal/bid value estimated using a deterministic approach, with a 15 percent probability of a loss. This report investigates the effects of adding a layer of extra padding to the palm area of leather gloves typically worn by low seam coal miners. The first study showed that added glove padding provides more potential protection but does not affect manual dexterity. The second study, in a simulated low seam coal mine, showed no significant differences using padded and non-padded gloves in crawling, shoveling, timbering, and cart pushing task completion times. In general, subjects preferred the padded gloves although they expressed some complaints about awkardness and loss of sensitivity. Recommendations are given for the design of padded gloves that will provide comfort, protection, and maximum hand sensitivity for miners.

Slurry viscosity ultimately affects the majority of mineral extraction processes. However, to date its role has been disguised because mineral processing equipment has been conservatively designed to operate at minimal slurry viscosity. With most ores this still meant acceptable solids concentration was achieved. However, with the advent of treatment of weathered ores the resulting higher slurry viscosity (rheology) has meant solids concentration has had to be reduced, often to unacceptable levels. To permit operation at higher solids concentration chemical dispersants are employed. These dispersants are expensive and their addition should be controlled. Slurry Systems Pty Limited (SSPL) has developed an On-Line Viscometer to monitor and control slurry viscosity, whether by controlling water addition or by controlling dispersant addition. Using this instrument the slurry rheology can be controlled at the optimum level, maximizing solids throughput, and minimizing water, reagent, and dispersant addition. This paper discusses rheology of typical mineral slurries, the relationship between slurry rheology and percent solids in a slurry, and the need for rheological control in mineral processing. The effects of rheology on various process steps, and the use of dispersants are reviewed. The paper concludes with summarizing actual case histories and cost impact of Theological control.
