Why Chloride Hydrometallurgy?The most available, cheapest and best known reagent for treating ores and other raw materials for the metallurgical industry is sulfuric acid. Hydrochloric acid is second in line. What often happens is that a process is developed on the basis of sulfuric acid, and that at some point the question arises: wouldn't hydrochloric acid do this better?Considering hydrochloric acid immediately opens a very interesting field of research. To summarize a few comments from another paper presented at this symposium [1]: chlorides are far more soluble than sulfates (with a few interesting exceptions); the hydrogen ion activity is greater in chloride than in comparable sulfate solutions; higher oxidative conditions are possible; regeneration is more straightforward; more diversity is possible and better conditions for the separation of species can be found for solvent extraction and ion exchange; sulfur in the ore can be separated as elemental S; higher metal concentrations in solution and more flexibility in the chosen oxidation state means significantly lower energy costs.Also, the volatility of many chlorides at higher temperature allows further separation without the need to go to a different system. Chlorides also form molten salts with a low melting point, providing another means of separation and purification in the same chloride medium.

In this paper, CFD was used to investigate the blasting toxic fume characteristics under different entrapping percentages and under changing muck pile properties like broken rock size and porosity. It showed that CFD was a very useful method to study blasting fume in an underground mine and it took much longer time to dilute toxic fume into a safe level with higher entrapping percentage. The dilution time increased with a decrease of broken rock size and porosity.

DECISION to build a mill at the Bayard property was made in May 1942. Western-Knapp Engineering Co., of San Francisco, assisted by engineers of U. S. Smelting, handled the design and construction. Much of the milling equipment was moved from the Company's mill at Goldroad, Ariz. Wartime restrictions necessitated wood construction and paper sheathing except for structures adjacent to the Bullfrog shaft. Construction started in September 1942 and milling in March 1943. Bayard ores are processed in a single-ection mill. About half of the ore treated during the past year was hoisted through the Bullfrog shaft and the rest was trucked from other shafts. Coarse storage includes four bins, two of 120 tons each for Bullfrog ores and two of 85 to 120 tons each, served by a truck ramp. The low capacity figure refers to

IF, in this study of the outlook for the copper industry of the United states, I find myself assuming to be prophetic in some respects I shall express myself with hesitation and with the foresight that after the end of the war with Germany the war with Japan may continue; anyway there is sure to be an uneasy period before copper and the other metals begin to flow smoothly through the natural channels of consumption. It is mainly my purpose to survey conditions and suggest some probabilities, or possibilities, rather than to prophesy. In interpreting them it will be necessary to make certain aasurnptions, among which will be (1) expectation of a rise in the general price level,, which so far has been one-sided; (2) continuance of the k. tariff on copper imports; and (3) lock-up of government-owned copper as a military re- serve. Of these assumptions the first is indicated by the lessons from economic history, and by current symptoms. The second and third depend upon political action by Congress.

IN the relations that exist between capital and labor in this country, there is a bright as well as a dark side. After many years of distressing conditions of labor and a plentiful supply of propaganda, it is doubtful that the doctrine of the class struggle, however defined and stated, has been embraced by any influential and numerous elements of our population. Extreme and uncivilized methods of conflict, whether they be the labor spy as used by the employer or the sit-down strike by organized, labor, have come to be abandoned as the result of the pressure of sober and distinterested public opinion. Unwise terms of our law of trade unions and the unbridled zeal of its administrators show some slight signs of being revised in the light of 'experience and the protests of the law's own beneficiaries. At the point where labor policy touches economic conditions, the two powerful factions in the American labor movement appear to look with a less friendly eye on the bewildering succession of economic experiments and to have a deep nostalgia for a simpler and more prosperous economy.

In this study, a dataset of 145 bi-directional and static load tests was used to evaluate the load-displacement response with respect to unit side resistance for drilled shafts comprising fully and partially mobilized data. A total of 612 unit side resistance curves were calculated which included 52 fully mobilized curves showing a maximum response. A new approach using the double tangent method, is proposed in calculating the maximum unit side resistance from partially mobilized load-displacement data. The double tangent method was applied to each load-displacement response to estimate the ratio of mobilized resistance between the intersecting tangents and peak measured resistance. It is observed that as the mobilization of side shear approaches a maximum, the ratio approaches unity. Using the fully mobilized curves, regression models were developed using correlations between ratios of estimated resistance at the double tangent, peak, and maximum measured responses. Regression models are evaluated for the following factors: predominant soil type and drilled shaft construction methods. Comparisons of calculated and measured maximum values of unit side resistance are compared for each model. Although these factors each influence the load-transfer behavior, a single global regression model including all the data showed promise in yielding accurate results.

In spite of many advantages explosives have, their usage may cause environmental problem such as seismic vibration. One of the solutions to this particular problem may be application of an artificial screen as a barrier to the seismic wave path. This paper presents the results of experimental research on the artificial screen concept, its characteristics and role in attenuation of seismic effects generated by blasting. More than 1,500 laboratory measurements were conducted with different combinations of screen sizes, positions of the screen to blasting source, and intensities of blasting impulses. The results of the study show a significant reduction of generated vibrations by employment of artificial screens.

"A waterfront stabilization system consisting of Deep Soil Mixing (DSM) columns, vinyl sheet pile fascia, and concrete flood walls supported on shallow footings was designed and constructed for a high-density waterfront development in Northern California. The project site is underlain by soft, compressible organic soil locally known as Bay Mud that has been capped with loose sand and imported fill. The waterfront stabilization system constructed at the site mitigates liquefaction, consolidation settlement and seismic potential slope deformation along the waterfront; the system was designed to reduce lateral displacements to tolerable amounts for the proposed structures. This paper presents the general design methodologies, construction challenges and quality control of this waterfront stabilization system.INTRODUCTIONUrban development in Northern California is fueling innovations in geotechnical engineering as more complex sites are developed. ENGEO Incorporated introduced a deep soil mixing technology from Japan to the US and designed a waterfront stabilization system for a high density waterfront development project in Redwood City, California. The approximately 12½-acre project site, as shown on Fig. 1, is surrounded by water on three sides, with an inner marina at the center of the site.The project site is located in the seismically active San Francisco Bay Area in California. The San Andreas Fault, the Monte Vista-Shannon Fault, the Hayward Fault and the San Gregorio Fault are major active faults located within 25 miles of the site. Once a former marshland with a major slough until the late 1950s, the site was reclaimed by placing imported fill over the native compressible clay deposits, locally known as Bay Mud."

The Zelazny Most Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) is the largest reservoir of post–flotation tailings in Europe. The total amount of tailings from the mines in Lubin, Rudna, and Polkowice are stored each year at the disposal facility, which reaches approximately 30 million tons. It is crucial to accurately monitor and maintain such a huge storage facility, for the safety and economics of the entire region. In general, the monitoring network installed at the Zelazny Most TSF includes four groups of components: (a) geotechnical network (VW pore pressure transducers and inclinometers), (b) hydrological network (open piezometers, water level gauges, drainage discharge measurements, (c) geodetic survey network (e.g. surface and in-depth benchmarks, laser measurements, GPS measurements within GEOMOS network and (d) seismic network (e.g. accelerometer stations, cone penetration tests.) Apart from the above, chemical water analyses, tests of soil samples, monitoring of spigotting processes, and monitoring of relief wells’ discharge are also conducted. In total, approximately 2900 monitoring instruments are installed within the area of the Zelazny Most TSF. Such large amounts of data from the various information sources makes manual data analysis by the engineers almost impossible. In this paper we discuss a machine learning driven approach to improve the quality of the monitoring and maintenance of such facilities. We focus on the seismic cone penetration test (SCPT) data analysis. First, we carefully describe the collected data, its quality and availability. Then we discuss possible events that can occur in the TSF that need to be predicted using SCPT. Based on the information obtained in these two steps, the applicability of several machine learning methods is estimated. Some of them are then tested on available historical data. The algorithms described in this article will be further developed in the IlluMINEation project (H2020).

Reflected light microscopy scanning electron microscope energy dispersive spectroscopic analysis and backscatter electron image and electron microprobe chemical analysis have been used to study lead sinter and lead blast furnace slag. These studies provide invaluable information on the phases present their intergrowths, and their chemical composition. Such information increases the understanding of the nature of pyrometallurgical processes and the behavior of minor elements during these metallurgical processes.

A description and capabilities of the Mine Roof Simulator at the Pittsburgh Mining Technology Center is illustrated for testing longwall roof support equipment. This unique Mine Roof Simulator has the capacity to exert 3 million lbs. of compressive force vertically and 1.6 million lbs. of force horizontally to simulate loads on hydraulic supports typically found in longwall mining. The supports that undergo testing are instrumented with strain gauges and photoelastic coatings such that critically strained areas become readily apparent. These critically strained areas are redesigned or retrofitted with appropriate reinforcement and retested. A data base will be accumulated from several support designs that will lead to an optimized design that will have the potential to reduce downtime by malfunctions of supports and thus increase productivity. A typical test procedure and analysis is given for a two leg 350 ton shield along with a description for placement of strain gauges, displacement gauges, and hydraulic pressure monitors for critical sites.

India is well endowed with vast reserves of banded hematite ore, about 12 billion tonnes, estimated by some conventional methods. Various authors have assessed this huge reserve using some advanced geostatistical methods. A Banded Iron Formation (BIF) belt named the `Singhbhum-Keonjhar-Bonai' belt in India has been chosen as a case study. In this paper, the experiences of Chiria iron ore, in particular, have been described. This study will finally create a dynamic mineral inventory after standardising the geostatistical parameters which will help to cater for the needs of the stringent quality requirements of the Indian steel industries.

The demand for stainless steel is ever-increasing. As an essential element in stainless steel-making process, so is the demand of chromite concentrate. At the same time, the industry proven technologies for beneficiation of chromite are limited. Chromite is only crushed, screened and jigged to produce a concentrate. However, for ultrafine and low-grade material, no satisfactory beneficiation methods for the enrichment of chromite fines exist in industrial operation. This poses a clear challenge for the industry, which Primetals Technologies has addressed with the development of a new beneficiation process. The aim of this process was to enrich low grade chromite tailings to a quality suitable for the smelting process. Required concentrate grades are different over the world, concentrate grades of Cr2O3=40% and lower are found at the Bushveld Complex, South Africa. The target for the present study was a Cr2O3-grade in the area of 49%. Three different chromite tailings with Cr2O3 grades between 16 % and 29 % were part of a study, executed by Primetals Technologies. All three tailing materials were characterised by Mineral Liberation Analysis (MLA). Based on the physical, chemical and mineralogical findings, process flowsheets were developed. The process flowsheets included grinding to ensure a full liberation of the chromite. The liberated material was classified at a cut size of 63 μm to a coarse and fine fraction. Gravity separation and flotation processes were tested with the coarse particle fraction. Due to the limitations of gravity separation with fine particles, only the flotation process is suitable and was tested with the fine fraction < 63 μm. A Design of Experiment (DoE) with six factors, each three levels, was conducted to identify optimal parameters for the fine chromite flotation. Two different collectors were tested: a phosphoric acid ester and a fatty acid type collector. In small scale test work a chromite concentration suitable for the smelting process was achieved. On this basis Primetals Technologies will develop a pilot-scale test program to research recirculation effects and upscale potential of the process. Changes in flotation performance have been correlated to changes in froth structure, velocity and stability. Literature has shown that when the aeration rate is varied for a specific float cell, the recovery of the valuable mineral reaches a peak which also coincides with a peak in the air recovery – a measure of froth stability. Peak air recovery optimisation methodology is a way to use direct readings of physical phenomena by froth cameras to optimise the metallurgical performance of a flotation plant. The aim of this paper is to show the transient nature of the peak air recovery value and the variety of conditions required to attain the peak air recovery on an industrial flotation plant with tight base-layer control of the feed and internal conditions. Industrial site tests that were conducted under controlled conditions showed different peak values at significantly different corresponding aeration rates during normal operation. The measured peak air recovery points corresponded to maximum PGM recovery during normal flotation, as expected. This dynamic nature of the peak air recovery point conditions has not previously been discussed in literature and indicates the need for online measuring equipment and informs the design of process control algorithms required to exploit the phenomenon for optimisation. Unplanned tailgate collapses and difficult mining conditions in U.S. longwalls have necessitated the use of innovative tailgate support systems. Severe ground movement induced by longwall loading has caused operators to utilize secondary support systems that can match yield and strength requirements with expected ground reactions. Standing support performance requirements depend on the nature of the ground deformation behavior, and therefore require a good understanding of the interaction between the support and ground to achieve an optimum roof support system. Mining operations often employ standing support strategies that are unique to their mine. A support system that functions successfully in one situation could fail in another situation. It is important that the design and installation of the standing support systems provide the highest probability of preventing roof falls. Pumpable roof supports are currently being used to provide a safe working environment for longwall mining. A full understanding of the impact of these performance characteristics is necessary to optimize the support application and to provide a foundation for making further improvements in the support performance. Optimization of roof support applications helps to ensure the protection of mine workers by preventing roof falls due to inadequate support design. The load capacity and stiffness characteristics of a 27-in.-diameter pumpable support system was evaluated using the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Mine Roof Simulator (MRS). Previously, tests to evaluate the performance characteristics were performed on a single pumpable support. The goal of this new research is to evaluate the performance characteristic effects of the pumpable support system and compare it to an individual pumpable test examination. This research of a pumpable support system configuration simulates the current installation practices in U.S. coal mines.

Impact crushers are common machines in comminution plants. Their high size-reduction ratio and relatively simple design, make them a preferred tool even when subjected to harsh wear, and producing a large quantity of fines in some applications. Until now the alignment of the operational parameters was an operator’s responsibility. Due to the random process characteristic this is mostly done based on empirical values and sensor data, such as power consumption. This paper describes a new approach for online process monitoring of the horizontal-shaft-impact crusher. The application of robust, low-cost acceleration sensors enables the permanent observation of the process characteristics. The operational and evaluation methods are determined on the basis of experiments. Subsequently the recorded measurements are analysed in regards of throughput, rotational speed and product particle size distribution. Occurring signal characteristics are described based on physical and technical principles. The measured data of the acceleration sensors at varying operation conditions provide insight in the course of process. The accurate utilisation yields the determination of the preferential process conditions providing the best balance between the pros and cons of an impact crusher. Both the experimental method and the data processing is discussed from a scientific perspective, displaying a completely new approach for the operation of impact crushers. A principal dificuldade em fazer isso de forma eficaz é construir uma ligação lógica entre os objetivos estratégicos organizacionais e as atividades de ciclo de vida nos ativos. Este trabalho mostra um estudo de caso na Samarco Mineração, onde esta dificuldade foi tratada com o uso do método SADT (Structured analysis and design technique), que permite uma exposição gradual de um tema complexo através de uma estrutura de diagrama. A partir da análise deste estudo de caso, será avaliada a validade do método SADT para este problema.

In the field of mineral extraction, complex technologies are being introduced in mines, operators/technicians rely on assistance from an expert (or more) in order to keep their machines functioning. Personnel with such expertise, however, are not always physically on-site. There is a growing need for innovative technological solutions to support effective delivery, just in time, of remote guidance between an offsite expert and an on-site maintenance operator. To meet this need, we have, as part of our Human System Integration project within the CSIRO’s Minerals Down Under (MDU), Transforming the Future Mine theme, explored the usefulness of a number of emerging technologies including: augmented reality, wearable systems and touch table interfaces. This paper presents ReMoTe, an augmented realty system for remote guiding using a touch table interface for the expert station and a combination of augmented reality and a wearable system at the operator end. In designing this system we were interested in exploring the extent to which it can increase the productivity and safety of maintenance personnel. This paper also presents Mobile ReMote, our recent development of a fully mobile remote guiding system. In Mobile ReMote, both the expert and the operator are using a near eye display and wearing a light computer in a back pack. The expert is able to guide the operator using his/her hands on the virtual display, while the operator is able to see the instructions on the rear eye display. Workers in the mining industry are highly mobile, a mobile expert and operator station will meet this need.

The most recent modernization phase of the wire rod mill at Sterling Steel involved installation of a pre-finishing mill, using a Morgan Vee Mini-Block, a new water box and shear with utility systems and automation. The new mill configuration adds more stands to the mill for better drafting and is designed to improve finished product quality by providing a more uniform entry temperature, better control of the feed section into the No-Twist® mill as well as enhanced surface quality. The new shear improves cut length accuracy as well as decreases the amount of trimming to reduce yield loss. This paper explains the changes made in the mill and the features of the new equipment and automation.
