Mutch (Falconbridge Nickel Mines Ltd., Ona-ping, Ontario)—This contribution is prompted by the fact that the writer has recently published an article'!' which has in part the same general conclusions as B. S. Butler's, namely, the form of the standard mineral paragenesis in hypogene deposits and the parallel transition from early high temperature acid to late low temperature alkaline or neutral solutions. Since the writer also recognizes that he is not fully qualified to discuss the formation of ore deposits as a chemical problem, this discussion will be limited to summarizing other observations and will suggest how Butler's Table II might be made more effective. The form of Butler's table is not unlike that widely used by European geologists'" in which the various minerals are related to the types of ore fluids—peg-matitic, pneumatolic and hydrothermal. Thus the decrease in temperature and change in pH of the ore-bearing fluids as recognized by Butler may also be paralleled by perhaps even greater changes in composition, density, and character. W. H. Newhouse's article:" on the sequence of hypo-gene ore mineral deposition is still one of the most complete analyses of the problem. In it he makes four major observations: 1) The order of O, S, As, Sb is the same as their increasing atomic weights and the same as their melting points. 2) The order of the metallic elements is the same as the Schuermann series. 3) The general mineralogical order is paralleled by decreasing heats of formation. 4) The order is generally in decreasing hardness, higher metal content, and higher specific gravity. The order of 0, S, As, and Bi is also the same as their relative abundance. Another point worth mentioning about this series is that As, Sb, Bi, when abundant, often substitute for sulfur in the early pyrite-like minerals, whereas later in the sequence these elements appear to act more like metals. This behavior may be a further indication of the acid character of the early fluids. C. J. Sullivan"' has attempted to show that the sequence of the metallic elements is related to the order of their melting points and has discussed the interrelationship of the different types of bonding of sulfo-phile and oxiphile elements in minerals. Items 3 and 4 might best be summarized by saying that bonding of the minerals in the series appears to be from ionic to covalent to metallic, the early minerals being light in weight, hard, and near-transparent; the intermediate minerals of intermediate weight, semi-transparent, and semi-conducting; and the end minerals heavy, soft, and malleable, opaque and good conductors. A rapid fall in temperature has been assumed to be the cause of ore deposition in many deposits. Perhaps this in turn is the effect of a rapid release of energy in the form of pressure release and change of volume, the first minerals to form being those with the highest heats of formation which absorb the released energy the most rapidly. Butler's Table II could probably be streamlined and made more effective if the listed compounds were assembled as mineralogical groups as in Dana. Thus the sulfides, arsenides, antimonides, bismuthides, and sulfa salts could be arranged in AX,, AX, A2X2, etc. groups. Since these are continuous substitution series, in which the fields of stability and the heats of formation of the various individual minerals can be fairly regarded as similar, this should be accomplished with no loss of clarity. The occurrence of the individual minerals and the precise sequence of the mineral deposition in any one deposit is probably more dependent on the concentration and relative abundance of the component elements. The assembling of geological data in tabular form such as Butler's Table II will continue to be a very effective method of studying geological phenomena. The importance of this particular problem has been pointed out by C. F. Park,% who concludes that understanding of mechanisms of the standard paragenesis and interrelated problems of mineral zoning in space and time is one of the major keys to classification of ore deposits.

The greatest objection to be brought against the present methods for estimating phosphorus in iron and steel, is the time consumed in the operation. The following method, originated and perfected by Mr. E. D. Campbell, assistant in the chemical laboratory of the University of Michigan, will, 1 think, if carefully followed out, give results that are sufficiently accurate for technical purposes, and will give them in less time than they can be obtained by any other process. The process consists in comparing the color obtained by the action of stannous chloride upon a solution of the phospho-molybdate precipitate obtained from the solution of iron or steel, with that obtained from a standard solution of molybdie acid which represents a given amount of phosphorus. The operation is as follows : Take of ordinary steel 1 grm. and treat as in any of the wellknown processes until the phosphorus is precipitated as ammoniumphospho-molybdate. When precipitated, the phospho-molybdate precipitate is filtered out, thoroughly washed with an acid solution of ammonium nitrate, and, finally, twice with water, to remove most of the ammonium nitrate. The precipitate is then dissolved in about 1 c. c. of 10 per cent. potassium hydrate, which is let fall drop by drop on the filter till the precipitate is dissolved ; the filter is now washed with about 25 or 30 c. c. of water, and the potassium hydrate solution, which now consists of 25-32 c. c. of solution, is boiled until the peculiar frothy appearance, which first appears on boiling, is entirely gone. The solution is then cooled until perfectly cold, and about 10 or 15 c. c. of strong hydrochloric acid added ; if the solution is kept cold this will form no precipitate, but a light yellow or colorless solution. The solution is now ready for the addition of stannous chloride, and the subsequent comparison of color produced with that obtained from the standard molybdie acid. The comparison is made in tubes that are calibrated like carbon-tubes, but which are larger, about 5/8-inch bore, and graduated to 100 c. c.; this makes them about 18 inches long. The increasing demand for iron ore with low concentrations of trace elements, puts increasing pressure on iron ore producers for high-quality material. Understanding the mineralogy, petrography, chemistry, and mineral association of iron ore deposits is becoming increasingly important to provide iron ore products that meet the ever-increasing standards of steel mills. Limited attention has been paid to documenting new orebodies beyond bulk RC drill chip assays and product specification data. Therefore, limited information is known about the spatial distribution of minor and trace elements at the hand specimen scale, and elemental deportment within different ore and gangue minerals. In this study, samples from high-grade microplaty hematite, supergene-enriched martite-goethite and hematite iron ores are examined for their elemental and mineral associations. These samples contain distinctive minor and trace element distributions, with the mapping of deleterious elements (eg Zn, As, Cu) enabling the deportment and abundance within the ore and gangue minerals to be assessed. Results from this study show a diverse range of minor and trace mineralogy that are present in typical iron ore samples, in abundances below the detection limit of routine XRD scans, that host the deleterious elements, including but not limited to, sphalerite (Zn and S), chalcopyrite (Cu and S), xenotime (P and Y), apatite (P and Ca), cryptomelane (K and Mn), barite (Ba and S), alkaline feldspar (K, Al and Si) zircon (Zr and Si) and chromite (Cr and Al). The presence of these minerals and associated deleterious elements, even at low concentrations, has implications for producers, with the ongoing restrictions and tightening of environmental constraints in shipped iron ore products. By understanding the distribution and location of these elements within the iron ore, steps can be considered to maintain increasingly higher quality iron ore supply around the world.

Starting on a small scale, the equipment for processing synthesis gas to form liquid hydrocarbons was expanded to handle 100 m) 3/hr. This reactor was successfully designed and constructed, and a basis for future design methods was established. Because, however, this work was carried out on an empirical basis, it is felt that a more thorough theoretical study should be made in an effort to increase the efficiency of the process, particularly in the development of a simpler converter.

Because of increasing concern with air pollution, the Bureau of Mines has developed a hydrometallurgical procedure to obtain elemental sulfur from chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) by means of the following reaction: CuFeS2 + 3FeCl3 ? CuCl + 4FeCl2 + 2S. Under optimum conditions, 99.6 percent of the copper and 71.6 percent of the iron were extracted in 2 hours from a typical mill concentrate containing 75 percent CuFeS2 and 15 percent pyrite (FeS2). At the same time, 68.2 percent of the sulfur in the concentrate was oxidized to the elemental form. The leach was highly selective; gangue minerals, including pyrite, were not attacked, thus accounting for the relatively low recoveries of iron and sulfur. To obtain these results, the concentrate was ground to 98.9 percent minus 325 mesh, and 300 grams was treated with 1 liter of boiling ferric chloride (FeCl3) solution. The FeC13/CuFeS2 ratio was 2.7. Cement copper containing 99.9 percent copper was recovered from the leach solution by cementation on sponge iron. Excess iron, dissolved during leaching and cementation, was removed from the stripped solution by crystallization. Ferrous chloride (FeCl2?4H2O), obtained as a byproduct, was converted to high-purity ferric oxide (Fe203) and HCI by an oxidizing roast. The hydrochloric acid was then electrolyzed to obtain chlorine, which was used to regenerate the leach solution. The leach residue, which contained ~50 weight-percent elemental sulfur, was treated with an organic solvent to recover the sulfur and cyanided to reclaim gold and silver.

Introduction Drinnan is situated in the Prairie Creek coal area in the Foothills belt of Alberta. It lies on the main line of the Canadian National railway from Edmonton to Jasper. The exact location is shown on the map (Figure I). Interest in the field was aroused by several circumstances: Its proximity to Brule and Pocahontas on the southwest and to Coal-spur on the southeast led to the belief that coal might be economically produced here. There was already at Hinton a 3 ft. 9 in. coal seam being mined by Seabolt. The coal was of very good grade, being black and shiny in appearance with well defined cleavage and a heat value of 12,000 B. t.u. Outcrops of coal had also been noticed on the north side of the Athabaska river and Fish creek. These facts led the Jasper Coal Company to investigate the field. This Company considered taking over the Seabolt property at Hinton, but, owing to the size of the seam, this plan was abandoned and prospecting by diamond drills and test pits was started two years ago in the district east of Hinton. After prospecting had been completed, the most favourable district was found to be in township 51, ranges 24 and 25, west of the 5th meridian. The Company's lease includes all or parts of sections 18, 19, 20, and 28 in range 24, and sections 10, 11, 12, 13, and 14 in range 25. The approximate boundaries of the property are the Canadian National railway on the north, Happy creek on the west, and Cache Percotte creek on the east. The lease comprises 3,100 acres, and the total amount of coal in sight is estimated at 100,000,000 tons.

"The three-dimensional complex multiphase turbulent flow in U-beam separators was simulated using the Reynolds stress equation models (RSM). To account for the effect of the stochastic characteristic of the instantaneous gas velocity on the particles, the improved Lagrangian stochastic model based on the Reynolds stress model for gas phase was adopted, which attributed to the successful prediction of the turbulence anisotropy and particle crossing trajectories effects. The interaction between the particles was also considered using the HardSphere model. To treat the particle-wall collision, the influence of the roughness of the wall on the motion of the solid particles was taken into consideration by imposing random collision angles. The result from this study not only shows the dynamic characteristics of the multiphase flow- in the separators, but also gives the relationship among the efficiency, structure and pressure losses of the separator.IntroductionCirculating fluidized bed (CFB) combustion is one of the most promising clean coal techniques. A main feature of CFB boilers is the un-delayed recycle of solid, coal and sorbant particulate, in an external loop. Separator, which is required to separate the solid particle from the flue-gas leaving the reactor of CFB, plays an importance role in the external solids recycle loop. It affects the combustion of CFB system greatly. Presently cyclone is the most commonly used as separators for CFB system and other chemical industrial processes. It provides high level of separation for CFB system for fine particles. However it suffers from some inherent disadvantages. It's volume and size is huge. Moreover, it is difficult to design and install when the CFB workload rises. The application of U-beam separators instead of hot cyclone separators in CFB boilers has many advantages. Publications indicate proposals or successful use of Ubeam separators in Swedenr11, USA 21, Russia r3land China [4]• But it is not possible to find results in the literature of detailed investigations of this new. type of separators or recommendations on the choice and calculation of an optimal design. For this reason, numerical simulation for the three-dimensional gas-particle two-phase flows with several rows of vertical U-beam elements, local in the chess order and blocking a way of outgoing from a CFB boilers dusted gases was carried out in this study."

The European Union (EU) have recently issued new Threshold Limit Value-Time Weighted Average (TLV-TWA) for diesel exhaust contaminants, which are CO, NO2 and DPM. The new limits for CO and NO2 were issued in 2017 whilst the one for DPM was issued in 2019. However, in order to allow EU mines to formulate strategies to comply with these new limits, the EU granted a transition period in which mines could use the old limits until the new limits are enforced. The new limit for CO and NO2 will be enforced from 21 August 2023 whilst the one for DPM will be enforced from 21 February 2026. The new limit for NO2 and DPM is very low, 0.5 ppm for NO2 and 0.05 mg/m3 of Elemental Carbon (EC) for DPM. Combination of these two limits would be the lowest among all mining jurisdictions worldwide. It poses a huge compliance challenge to EU mines if they keep using diesel machines. Therefore, a study and a field trial were carried out by the author in 2019–2021 to investigate whether replacing diesel machines with Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) would be the best answer to this challenge. The dynamic value varies with respect to both passage speed through the separating field and time of exposure in a preliminary treatment field . An important problem in the efficient conduct of industry is that of helping the individual employee to formulate an attitude toward his work which will result in the reduction of accidents and the promotion of safety. Perhaps nowhere is the need greater for this type of Psychological training of carefully selected men than at oil refineries whore both the raw materials and the finished products are highly inflammable and explosive in nature. However, the refinery organization usually is well adapted to educational safety activities - much more so than in the producing, pipe line, and marketing departments where the personnel are more or less scattered; but the same general principles of conduct hold true in any industrial organization. This problem of directing the attention of the employees to their specific tasks or helping them to control and frequently eliminate hazards engendered by adverse mental attitude or emotion is met most satisfactorily by carefully selecting applicants and placing them at jobs for which their ability, best fits them. The subsequent training of these carefully selected employees to assure their most effective work in accident prevention mu be accomplished in a variety of ways, such as by personal supervision and instruction, inspections, drills, and by the studied use of well thought out safety pamphlets and posters. This procedure is simple in outline and not original in scope, yet the importance of selecting and training the personnel has, not been generally accepted by the petroleum industry until recent years. In 1926, the Bureau of Mines, while making a study of accidents in the petroleum industry, found that medical examinations of prospective employees were not receiving unanimous endorsement by all companies, and the point was stressed that the selection and allocation of employees was a problem requiring serious consideration in the petroleum industry.

The current Stoilensky magnetite concentrator comprises a three-stage crushing circuit followed by three stages of ball milling, grinding and concentration to produce a magnetite concentrate with 66.5% iron (Fe). The plant is built in four lines, three lines having four mills and one line with five mills, to treat 32 Mt/y of ore and produce 13.9 Mt/y of concentrate.NLMK, the owner, is Russia’s third largest steel maker and while the ore from the Stoilensky Mining and Beneficiation Plant (SGOK) provides the bulk of their supply, they still must buy ore from external sources at world prices. A decision was taken to expand the SGOK operation to supply all the NLMK concentrate, including the production of pellets.To commence the expansion, high pressure grinding rolls (HPGRs) were introduced as a fourth stage of crushing ahead of the first ball mill. This was a relatively low capital cost expansion and increased production by 12 to 15%, the cost being much less than an additional grinding line. The importance of this development was that earlier introductions of HPGRs in Russia had presented several problems so there was some reluctance to the initial concept. The even greater significance was that nearly every magnetite plant in Russia had a three-stage crushing circuit so the successful introduction of HPGRs was of interest to many operators.The design was developed by a team, consisting of Worley Parson, Mineralconsult and PiterGORproject (PGP), for the first four units to fit inside existing building structures. The first two units were commissioned in March 2016 and the next two units in May 2016, and production improved by over 12%. Permanent mould casting may be regarded as a near net shape manufacturing process where simple to very complex shaped engineering components are fabricated with high degree of precision in a metallic mould, In this group, High Pressure Die Casting (HPDC), have attracted more attention because of its production rate, where both liquid and semisolid metals (SSM) can be cast with high degree of precision and versatility. The SEED process, Swirled Enthalpy Equilibration Device, the new process for semi solid metals slurry production route, consists of two steps: The initial step involves extracting specified amount of heat from the molten metal to generate liquid-solid slurry, i.e, mushy structure, followed by drainage of remaining liquid to produce a compact free standing feedstock for rheocasting operation. In this paper, microstructural evolution during the process and some initial casting results of automotive components an also reported.

A mining system consists of many sub-systems such as drilling, blasting, loading, hauling, ventilation, hoisting and supporting. During mining operation, these sub-systems may experience various problems that stop the operation because of possible environmental equipment and safety issues. In order to ensure delivery contracts in the required quality and safe mining medium, the operation should be, at least, performed in the specified reliability level of the system. If the system reliability decreases below the specified level, there will be safety and financial losses for the mining company. Therefore, the mine should be maintained by a reconstruction procedure to guarantee the operation continuity. Given that each sub-system has a different reliability function and maintenance cost, the determination of reconstruction time will be a complicated decision making problem. In this paper, the determination of reconstruction time is formulated as a nonlinear optimization problem and solved by genetic algorithms (GA). A case study was conducted to demonstrate the performance of the approach for an underground operation. The results showed that the approach could be used to determine the best action time. "AbstractA number of plant-scale cyanidation tests were carried out in an attempt to uncover the causes of fluctuations in gold recovery efficiency. Computer analysis of the results verified that the treatment of reclaimed waste rock material along with normal run-of-mine ore was having an adverse effect on metallurgical efficiency. Mineralogical examinations showed that the free gold particles in the dump material were heavily tarnished or coated (predominantly by hydrated iron oxide), accounting for the lower recoveries. The indications were that the effect could be counteracted somewhat by using higher than normal cyanide and lime reagent concentrations and adequate leaching times. Analysis of the results showed further that leach pulp density was an important operating parameter affecting extraction efficiency. A variable activation energy leaching model provided an extremely good characterization of individual batch leach runs.IntroductionFLUCTUATING METALLURGICAL EFFICIENCY at the gold concentrator of the S.A. The Rio Tinto Metal (RTMetal) copper smelter, located 5 Km from Huelva, Spain, began operations in 1970. Since then a series of expansions and modifications have allowed a progressive increase in copper production. Environmental considerations having become increasingly important, environmental protection has come to represent an important aspect of the investments in production. As a result, modifications have been carried out in the two existing acid plants: -Modification of the RTM I gas cleaning section to closed circuit. -Substitution of cascade filters and acid lines. -Modification of the RTM I plant to double absorption. The Expansion and Environmental Improvement Project, completed end 1995, will allow 270,000 t Cu and 800,000 t H2SO4 to be produced yearly, at the same time achieving a decrease in specific and overall emissions. RTMetal's goal is to be an efficient smelter, with the avowed intention of respecting the environment and adopting the best available technologies.

O consumo de energia em panelas de aço está relacionado às etapas do processamento que ocorrem durante o refino secundário. O aço líquido perde energia térmica quando são adicionadas ligas, pelo sopro de gases, agitação e por convecção natural. Cerca de 70% dessas perdas ocorrem pelos revestimentos refratários, que dissipam energia para o ambiente quando suas superfícies são resfriadas. A microestrutura dos refratários Carbonfree resulta na redução da transferência de calor no material, devido a presença de fases de baixa condutividade térmica (por exemplo, agregados porosos) e sem o carbono que é uma fase usualmente presente e aumenta a condutividade térmica nos materiais. O processo nas panelas de aço é transiente e necessita de ferramentas numéricas avançadas para investigar o desempenho desses materiais nas condições específicas de cada aciaria. Tais ferramentas foram aplicadas para estimar o potencial de conservação de energia dos revestimentos Carbonfree em um caso real (linha de metal e sola) e os resultados mostram um potencial de redução de 21%. Os testes realizados in-situ compararam as diferentes taxas de queda de temperatura para cada configuração com as previstas pela ferramenta. Os benefícios estimados foram comprovados e a eficiência dos materiais investigados foi validada.

Introduction The Sleeper mine is a near-surface gold mine located in a remote area 56 km (35 air miles) northwest of Winnemucca, NV (Fig. 1). The deposit was discovered in 1984 by an Amax exploration geologist. Favorable drilling results led to feasibility studies and metallurgical testwork. Final evaluation of the mine potential proceeded very quickly. The project received Amax board approval in July 1985. Eight months later, the process plant was fully operational. The first gold ($1 million) was shipped one month later, in March 1986. Total plant capital was $27 million. Payback was achieved in six months. The Sleeper mine was expected to produce 1.6 t (53,000 oz) of gold and 1.3 t (41,000 oz) of silver annually. However, the ore body exceeded all expectations. Production for the first 10 months of operation amounted to 4 t (128,000 oz) of gold and 2.9 t (94,000 oz) of silver. Direct cash operating costs are in the $1.77/g ($55 per oz) range. Amax is actively conducting exploration nearby for additional reserves to extend the mine's life. (See update on page 242.) Geology The Sleeper gold deposit is located on the northwestern flank of the Slumbering Hills and in the Awakening Mining District. Rocks exposed in the vicinity of the deposit are interbedded siltstones, sandstones, and limestones of Triassic age. They are overlain by latite lava flows and tuffs of Tertiary age. Dikes and sills of latite and andesite intrude the sedimentary rocks. Quaternary deposits of mostly sand with minor gravel and clay cover a pediment containing the gold deposit. The sedimentary and volcanic rock units have been transsected and offset by extensive north- northeast trending faults and less abundant northwest trending faults. Both fault systems fractured and prepared the ground for subsequent invasions of mineral-bearing hot spring geothermal waters. The hot spring systems produced widespread hydrothermal alteration and gold mineralization at silicified centers near feeder fault structures. The deposit is hosted by siltstone and latite that have been hydrothermally brecciated. The main breccia is elongated north-northeasterly. The hydrothermal breccia zones appear to dip steeply to the west. Gold mineralization consists of native gold and electrum deposited in two or more high-grade quartz-breccia veins. The effect of oxygen partial pressure on the volatilization percentages of valuable metals from iron-rich pyrite cinder by chlorination-volatilization method using CaCl2 as chlorinating agent was investigated in this study. The volatile products were collected directly and analyzed by X-ray diffraction. It was found that there were CuCl2, CuCl, PbCl2, and ZnCl2 existed in the volatile products. Au and Pb volatilization percentages were almost not affected by oxygen partial pressure. Both Cu and Zn volatilization percentages were negatively correlated with oxygen partial pressure when CaCl2 dosage was no more than 4 wt%, and almost uncorrelated with oxygen partial pressure with a CaCl2 dosage of 6 wt%.
