Three refractory gold concentrates have been tested to evaluate the effect of roasting with hydrated lime followed by cyanidation. The results indicate that it may be possible to roast in such a manner as to contain nearly all of the sulfur, arsenic and antimony in the roaster calcine. Cyanidation results indicate that the gold recoveries are greater than 80% for all three concentrates.

"A comprehensive software package has been developed at the Western Research Centre to meet many of the coal preparation requirements in the Canadian coal industry. This package performs three main functions: (1) data handling and manipulation; (2) data analysis, including the generation of washability data, performance evaluation and prediction, density and size modelling, evaluation of density and size partition characteristics, and attrition curves; and (3) graphics output.The software described in this paper is potentially a valuable tool for coal preparation plant engineers and operators for evaluating process performance and adjusting plant density separator cutpoints. Moreover, the analytical laboratory technician could find this package very useful in manipulating and presenting laboratory results."

Beach Placer Ilmenite is an important source for production of titanium metal, titania slag and pigment grade titanium dioxide. Besides, these well known applications for which Ilmenite is mined and processed, there are other emerging processes that are being tried for obtaining highvalue products. Synthesis of Ilmenite based materials for varistor applications and direct electrochemical reduction of Ilmenite to produce ferrotitanium are two such attempts being discussed in this work. In this paper, recent efforts undertaken to study the electrical and magnetic characteristics are discussed. Ilmenite, FeTiO3, is one of the mixed-valence transition metalbearing minerals, inwhich Fe can be in two different oxidation states, Fe2+ and Fe3+.. Similarly, Ti can be in Ti3+ and Ti4+.Ilmenite is inherently suitable for making Varistors, which are devices, used for limiting the transient voltage surges in a circuit. Varistors produced from Ilmenite can withstand harsh environments seen in nuclear reactors and outerspace. Electrochemical reduction of Ilmenite can be used to prepare ferrotitanium directly without any reductant. The process essentially involves removal of oxygen from the mineral through electrolytic action using calcium chloride as electrolyte and graphite as anode. At a temperature of 950°C, it is shown to be possible that all the oxygen can be removed from the Ilmenite sample, which passes through the electrolyte, to form CO/CO2 at the anode. The process has immense potential for cost effective production of titanium metal as well. Results of the above developmental works are presented in this paper. The advantages of recirculation of air in underground mines have been well recognized, and several papers have been written on the subject. Issues of concern to the various segments of the mining industry relate to the health and safety of workers, specifically, methane and respirable dust build-up in the air, high humidity and temperature at the work face. This paper presents a survey of various studies pertaining to recirculation as a prelude to the experimental and quantitative studies performed by the authors. Experiments were performed at a trona mine on the transportation and deposition of dust along the return airways, for three different velocities. Modeling studies were performed using dust deposition models. The model predicted data were compared with experimental data in order to lay the foundation for the development of advanced predictor models for recirculation in trona mines. Two models for dust deposition were analyzed. The model predicted data are in divergence from the experimental data, indicating the need to develop better models.

The extraction of metals from Copper Refinery Slimes may involve many different processes. This paper describes the use of pressure leaching for decopperizing of copper refinery slimes at the El Paso Refinery. Process equipment will be described, along with the process chemistry, unit operations and unit processes associated with the decopperizing process. Copper contained in the raw slimes ranges from 15-35%. After autoclaving less than 1 % copper remains.

THE heavy shrinkage in the production of bituminous coal has reflected adversely in the matter of tonnage produced by stripping arid mechanical loading machinery. The purchase of stripping and underground loading equipment has likewise been circumscribed. How- .ever a growing percentage of bituminous coal is being loaded by stripping and mechanical loading machinery. This situation is due to the fact that numerous strip pits were able to operate in Illinois and Indiana when under- cover mines were subjected to labor interference, a further advantage gained by their ability to produce and market coal at a price below that of the undercover mines. The mines equipped with mechanical loading. apparatus have enjoyed more continued operation for the double reason that the companies using coal-loading machinery are, generally speaking, more substantial and in better financial condition than many of the smaller properties who maintain hand-loading methods, and the market advantage due to lower production costs also reflects to the advantage of the undercover mines using mechanical loading equipment. Where a number of mines are con- trolled by one company, those not equipped with loading machinery and suffering from higher producing costs have often been closed, with the available tonnage concentrated in the more modernly equipped mines.

Reinforcing steel bars are usually specified based on mechanical properties with flexibility in chemical composition and processing. Most developments, in these steels, are normally focused on alloy and process design to reach minimum cost and conformity to specification. Processing routes using quenching and self-tempering (QST) and accelerated cooling are the most common. Microalloying with V and Nb have been used in rebar. When acicular constituents must be avoided, a combination of Nb microalloying with judicious control of cooling is one of the preferred options. Niobium can contribute to improvement in tensile properties through austenitic grain size control during hot working, precipitation hardening due to carbonitrides or clusters, and hardenability increase. In the present work the alloy design and development processes of a Nb microalloyed steel for rebars are presented. The designed steel has fulfilled the required specification and is under regular production. Austenitic grain size refining – when comparing with the “basic composition” normally used was observed, even without any change in the thermomechanical processing cycle. There are indications that precipitation hardening may also occur. Results indicate that Nb is a good alternative as a microalloying element in rebars.

Iron nugget could be got at high temperature using carbon composite pellet, which were made by the mixture of ludwigite and reducing agent. In order to reduce sulfur content in the nugget, effects of additives on the desulfurization was investigated. The sulfur content could be dramatically reduced if the CaO was introduced into the pellet and the sulfur content was as low as 0.046wt.% when the addition amount of CaO was 5wt.%. However, the melting separation of pellet became increasingly difficult and the yield of iron decreased when CaO content in the pellet gradually increased. Na2CO3 could also reduce the sulfur content in the iron nugget and made the iron and slag separate difficultly as well. When 6wt.% Na2CO3 was added into the pellet, the pellet was too difficult to melt separation and the sulfur content in the nugget was 0.084wt.%, which didn’t meet the need of steel making.

Government regulations around the world concerning environmental care are becoming more stringent, also including regulations and restrictions of depositing and use of dust, sludge and slag generated in the iron and steelmaking process. With this scenario, by-products such as iron containing dust, sludge, oxide fines, mill scales and slag, become a valuable resource and recycling may be a profitable activity within a plant. Up to ten percent in mass of the total steel output of dust, sludge and mill scale by-product materials and more than 40% of slag by product are generated within an integrated steel plant with an iron content ranging from 50% to 65% for fines and up to 25% for BOF-slag. Slags are being widely recycled and used in the cement industry, as is the case for BF slag, and in the construction industry in the case of BOF slags and EAF slags. However, value of BOF unmodified slag is typically low and environmental regulations limit the usage of the unmodified BOF slag. This paper describes innovative solutions for recycling of fines using cold briquetting technology and the modification and granulation of slag from steelmaking that increase the value of the by-product and yield a marketable product.

The annual ICGCM China was initiated in 2014. Up to 2023, ICGCM China has been held 9 times. In the 9 conferences during the past 10 years, about 559 papers in 17 topical areas were presented and attendance ranged from 200+ to 400+ each conference. The 42nd ICGCM China was held in Xiangtan, Hunan, China, 10/20–10/22/2023. There were 86 papers presented in 26 topical areas. In addition, an MS and PhD Research Forum was held concurrently with 36 papers presented by MS and PhD candidates in mining engineering from 8 schools. The conference plays an important role in cultivating advanced degree student talents. In this paper, all 559 papers reviewed previously were summarized. In addition, the 42nd ICGCM China is used to illustrate the current and future development trends of coal mine ground control in China. It summarizes the 122 papers (including 36 MS and PhD forum papers) grouping into, and in terms of, 26 topical areas. In addition, its unique and innovative subject areas, short summary of developments as well as conference strengths and shortcomings will also be presented.

This Information Circular describes the development of block-caving methods and practices by the Miami Copper Co. at the Miami mine in Gila County, Arizona. It is one of a series published by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods, practices, and costs in various mining districts of the United States. This report gives a history of the district and outlines early prospecting and exploration including methods of sampling and estimation of ore tonnage and value at the Miami mine. Early mining methods are described, particularly those that influenced developments in the caving method. Mine exploration, development, and operating methods for block caving are described with particular attention to those factors, physical, economic, engineering, and managerial that have improved efficiency in the mining operations over a long productive period. Extraction, ventilation, wage system, safety, water supply, power plant, and shop facilities are discussed. The last section gives a brief summary of such costs as are available for publication.

A family of modified-sulfur cements has been developed by the Bureau of Mines for the preparation of construction materials with improved properties. Various types of sulfur cements were prepared by reacting sulfur with mixtures of dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) and oligomers of cyclopentadiene (CPD). Durable cements were prepared with structural characteristics ranging from rigid to flexible. These cements were used to prepare corrosion-resistant materials for use in a wide variety of industrial applications where resistance to acidic and salt conditions is needed. These materials were prepared as rigid concretes, flexible pavings, spray coatings, and grouts. Production of modified-sulfur cements in a commercial-size plant was demonstrated.

The merit of reduction-in-area as a criterion of quality in metals is shown to lie in its influence on breaking stress, but the virtue of elongation is not easy to find. In order to assess the value of elongation, either as a measure of quality or as a guide to design, it will be necessary to separate the overall de-formation occurring in tension tests from the localized deformation associated with localized reduction in area. The obstacles to a successful solution of this problem have been shown to be more formidable than is generally appreciated, and a new solution to the problem has been suggested. This solution involves a de-vice by which an electric circuit is broken when the particular value of strain is reached that is to be taken as the point of separation between general and localized deformation. The report presents results from a number of tests on both low-carbon and alloy steels. The horizontal cold chamber die casting process can produce a wide range of near-net shape, non-ferrous castings with small dimensional variation, excellent surface finish and very complex geometries. However, top quality die castings can be achieved only when optimal performance of the cold chamber and plunger is maintained during the molten metal injection phase of the process. Cold chambers (shot sleeves) are known to deteriorate fast and sometimes fail catastrophically because of poor design. Catastrophic fracture and wear due to deformation are leading causes to degrade quality, increase downtime and thereby decrease productivity and profitability. Therefore, a systematic approach to minimize irregular and adverse conditions which prevent an intended injection profile, is highly desirable. To eliminate them, design criteria for shot sleeves were developed using analytical tools and available experimental data. The correlation between design and mechanical failures of shot sleeves was shown by the data obtained from the die casting industry. Also, the relationship between die casting process parameters and deterioration/ failure mechanisms were carefully evaluated.

The Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) conducted joint research on dust explosions by studying post-explosion dust samples. The samples were collected after full-scale explosions at the PRL Lake Lynn Experimental Mine and after laboratory explosions in the PRL 20-L chamber and the Fike 1-m3 chamber. The dusts studied included both high and low volatile bituminous coals. Low temperature ashing for 24 hr at 515°C was used to measure the incombustible content of the dust before and after the explosions. The data showed that the post-explosion incombustible content was always as high as or higher than the initial incombustible content. The MSHA alcohol coking test-was used to determine the amount of coked dust in the post-explosion samples. The results showed that almost all coal dust that was suspended within the explosion flame produced significant amounts of coke. Measurements of floor dust concentrations after LLEM explosions were compared to the initial dust loadings to determine the transport distance of dust during an explosion. All of these data will be useful in future forensic investigations of accidental dust explosions in coal mines or elsewhere. The chlorination of Cr₂ 03 (chromic oxide ) in the presence of carbon with CC14 (carbon tetrachloride ) and COCl2 (phosgene ) chlorinating agents was investigated by employing the radioactive tracer carbon By tagging carbon mixed with Cr₂ 0з , the chlorination reaction was evaluated in terms of the competitive reaction of the elemental carbon and the carbon contained by the chlorinating agent . A unique gas - analysis train was used to separate the chlorination product gases ; CO , CO₂ , and COC12 . The C¹ activity of the gases was determined and used to calculate the reactivity of each source of carbon . Reactivities were determined for the temperature range from 600 ° to 900 ° C. The results of the investigation show that each source of carbon reacts significantly with the Cr2 03 and that the reactivity of each form of carbon depends on the reaction temperature , and each form is independent of the other . Radioisotope and gas - analysis techniques are discussed and a description of the experimental apparatus is given .

"Ferrous and non-ferrous metals industries are source of both direct and indirect greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Metal industry accounted for 29.7% of the total GHG emitted from the Indian industry sector in 2007. Aluminum is second largest contributor after steel. Indian Aluminum industry has been growing and is adopting several effective measures for better efficiencies through process change and waste utilization. Improvement in the energy efficiency can form the basis of monitoring reduction in emissions. Under the National Action Plan on Climate Change 2008, National Mission for Enhanced Energy Efficiency (NMEEE) aims to upscale the efforts to unlock the market for energy efficiency improvement on a public private partnership (PPP) basis. For a transition to low carbon economy industry is undertaking voluntary measures through scientific and technological innovations both in upstream and downstream sectors. In this paper an attempt is made to overview recent developments in Indian Aluminum industry as well as summarize scientific & technological challenges and prospects.IntroductionAluminum plays a vital role in industrial development. It is a substitute for different type of materials ranging from wood to copper and steel. The aluminum industry has high energy consumption and high contribution to greenhouse gases from carbon dioxide and perfluorocarbons (PFCs) emissions. It is estimated that CO2 equivalent burden of aluminum industry is about 1% of total anthropogenic emissions. The anticipated world growth rate is 3.5% for aluminum demand. Through measures to reduce both direct and indirect CO2 emissions, electricity consumption was reduced from 25 kWh / kg of Aluminum in 1998 to 15 kWh / kg of Aluminum produced in 2008. It is targeted to further reduce it to 10.8 kWh. Aluminum industry is also responsible to about 60% of all PFC emissions. The PFC emissions are harmful to environment, accumulate in surrounding vegetation and contaminate. Efforts to reduce PFC emissions from aluminum industry started early and reduced to 0.5-1 kg / tonne in 1990 [1] from 12-15 kg / tonne in 1940. Since 1990s to 2000 it further reduced to 0.2 -0.4 kg / tonne as seen in Fig. 1. The Global Aluminum Sustainable Development Initiative (GADSI), targets perfluorocarbon (PFC) specific emissions reduction of 80% for 2010 relative to 1990."

Fire is always a serious-menace, whether in a residential or in an industrial region; in wartime it is particularly damaging in an industrial plant. The mining industry is especially vulnerable, as its plants are generally more or less isolated front centers of population and do not have access to modern fire-fighting equipment; moreover, owing to the transitory rapture of most mines, their surface structures; are often relatively flimsy and flammable.. Trained firemen seldom are available at or near mining plants to teach the fundamentals of fire-fighting to local fire brigades, with the result that efficiency in combating actual fires is lacking. Often the attitude "it can't happen here" is held by the management of a mining property, unless the plant has suffered a serious fire; even then lapse of time is very likely to induce forgetfulness as to the possible hazards. The necessity for producing metals for the prosecution of this war has increased management's responsibility. Whereas heretofore the loss of a plant or mill by fire meant merely monetary less to the stockholder of the company, now the national interest is affected, in that the nation suffers from loss of production of minerals indispensable for war purposes.

Pressure oxidative treatment of whole ores and/or mineral concentrates is used to leach or liberate metals of value for downstream recovery. Silver, when present, is often lost in processing, precipitating as a cyanide-insoluble jarosite in the residue. Depending on pressure oxidation conditions, the degree of silver loss to jarosite can vary dramatically. Batch bench-scale testwork is often performed to define that loss, and then assess the implications in continuous operations. This paper focusses specifically on the impact of CESL pressure oxidation conditions on silver recovery, and discusses limitations of batch bench-scale testing as well as means of overcoming these limitations to better predict silver recovery in the scale up from bench-scale to continuous operations. Since silver is only partially soluble in both sulphate and chloride media, it will gradually leach and deport to a jarosite as oxidation progresses. When a silver-insoluble anion, for example iodide, is dosed prior to oxidation, there is a marked improvement in silver recovery from batchgenerated residue; however, that benefit is not consistently seen in continuous operations. The difference has been attributed to the dynamic solution conditions in the batch test, specifically the first few moments of oxidation. Using these principles, a predictive correlation has been established between initial leach concentrations of iron and acid and ultimate silver recovery with iodide addition.
