BERYLLIUM is demanding more of the limelight, and the output of beryllium copper (containing 2% to~ 3 per cent of beryllium) seems to have grown 60 per cent above that of 1936, which was double that of 1935. There is increasing interest in beryllium-aluminum alloys and small quantities are being marketed at $50 per lb. for the contained beryllium. Other alloys also can be produced. Further price decreases for beryllium copper (now $23 per lb. for the contained beryllium) seem , possible and desirable. No difficulty has been experienced in obtaining beryl and a 'reserve stock has been built up. One supplier heretofore found reliable has offered to furnish 200 tons per month. This report presents the results of a study to develop a detailed mining method design based on longwall mining with sublevel caving. The method is applicable to low-dipping coal seams 20 or more feet thick such as are found in the western United States. The report covers (1) the development and description of the mining method, (2) evaluation of the engineering feasibility of the design, (3) estimates of productivity and recovery, and (4) an engineering cost analysis and economic feasibility evaluation of the mining method design.

This paper describes the technical status of the atmospheric pressure fluidized bed combustion (AFBC) process for utility steam generation. Major areas where AFBC development work is needed are discussed. Various approaches to solving these key issues are identified and the ongoing research and development programs addressing the key development areas are described. Other significant programs pertaining to the development of AFBC for utility steam generation are also discussed and needs for future work identified.

Designers of mining facilities play a significant role in defining the overall mine greenhouse gas emissions performance. This demands an appreciation of all the greenhouse gas emissions sources, including Scope 3 emissions, which will form an increasing fraction of the emissions as we transition our generation sources to renewable energy. Traditionally overland conveyors are designed to operate as fast as practical, and through this approach, achieve relative minimisation of: conveyor belt tensions; belt width; mechanical equipment masses; structural steel quantities; and concrete quantities. It is well understood that higher belt speeds reduce capital cost and improve project economics. Operating at higher speeds introduces operating costs through system energy losses and increased wear rates. This paper assesses the life cycle greenhouse gas emissions for a typical iron ore overland conveyor to demonstrate how the design criteria and engineering decisions impact greenhouse gas emissions and project economics. An analysis of the decarbonisation potential and project economics using a range of operational parameters has been completed, developing a marginal abatement cost for each system configuration, creating a basis for integration of low emission overland conveyor designs as part of the broader facility decarbonisation strategy.

The demand for iron-ore is ever increasing with the industry directly employing 60 500 people in a range of highly skilled roles in Australia. In the year 2019, the global iron-ore production was 2.85 billion tonnes. It is estimated that each tonne of beneficiated iron ore produces 400 kg of tailings. The IOTs are fine, dense and stable crystalline material mainly composed of iron oxides, alumina and silica. The current and most applied method of iron-ore tailings (IOTs) disposal is using subaqueous disposal of tailings in dams. The footprint generated by a tailings dam is massive and requires constant monitoring due to the possibility of a failure making the operation and maintenance of tailings dam extremely expensive. This review briefly discusses the known causes of tailings dam failures, their impact to the environment and day-to-day human life and potential applications of IOTs. The increase in water content enhances the pressure on dam walls. This in turn increases the liquefaction potential of the tailings and reduces the overall strength of the dam making it more vulnerable to failure. Potential applications of IOTs are in paints, aggregates in construction materials and bricks. The reuse of IOTs reduce waste and generates further revenue facilitating a path towards a sustainable future for the industry.

The object of this report is to present certain pertinent data on the physical and chemical properties of South Arcot lignite and to present the results of several special tests to show how the raw lignite can be upgraded to superior fuels for certain special uses. The Bureau of Mines Branch of Coal Technology laboratories at Denver have advocated the drying and carbonization of all low-rank fuels for special uses and have introduced and developed new techniques for upgrading and refining noncoking coals. Application of these techniques to the South Arcot lignites was the object of the investigation, and this report presents significant data necessary for planning a fuel program based on utilization of dried and carbonized dusts. In general, the South Arcot lignite is similar in chemical properties to the high-moisture lignites found in the United States and has some physical properties similar to Australian brown coals. The samples submitted for test had lost moisture before delivery to the laboratory, and it has been necessary to estimate the analysis of the lignite in place in the mine. Various observations made in India by qualified technicians indicate that the bed moisture content of the entire seam is in the range of 54 to 56 percent. For estimating purposes in this report, the bed moisture content has been taken as 56 percent and the ash content of the fresh coal as 2.5 percent. Under a cooperative agreement between the Bureau of Mines, the United States Geological Survey, and the United States Bureau of Standards, a study of the stone-quarrying industries of the country was begun in 1914. The results of investigations made have been published from time to time.1 During the World War the Bureau of Mines centered its attention on problems relating to national defense, and detailed studies of stone-quarry problems were not undertaken except for an investigation of labor saving at limestone quarries, reported in Technical Paper 203, which related to a question of military importance. Since the return of peace, the high cost of materials and labor has made more imperative than in prewar times the conduct of investigations for aiding the quarrying industries in every way possible to adopt more economical methods and to utilize the most efficient labor-saving equipment. The publications already issued have had a wide demand, and in the interest of the quarry industries the bureau proposes to issue additions to the series as rapidly as funds are available. In an endeavor to promote economy and the reduction of waste in the slate industry, a study of slate quarrying was begun in 1920 and covered a period of about two years. Sixty-five active quarries were visited, and a detailed study made of all problems bearing on their successful operation. Field study was supplemented by a study of all information available in books or published articles on slate quarrying.

As the global demand for metal values expands, it becomes increasingly important to create more sustainable mining operations. Consequently, considerable research and technology development is required to produce processes which are both more energy efficient and have a minimal environmental impact. One potential technology is the utilisation of microwave pre-treatment to reduce the energy requirements in comminution. Microwaves can preferentially heat the valuable mineral phases in an ore and the resulting differential thermal expansion leads to the formation of microfractures along the grain boundaries. As a result of the preferential heating, ore competency is reduced, mineral liberation is enhanced, a coarser grind size can be employed, and plant throughput can be increased. Furthermore, microwave pre-treatment can be combined with advanced ore sorting, to decrease the quantity of gangue material processed downstream and hence reduce tailings production. Previous studies on the microwave treatment of ores over the last 30 years have mainly been limited to low power bench-scale studies and there is a paucity of information on pilot and/or commercial scale studies. In the present research, the microwave heating behaviours of over 40 ores have been studied at the bench-scale. These results were used to generate a database, from which a unique classification system was developed. This system was used to rank the amenability of any given ore for microwave pre-treatment. This knowledge can be employed to predict the performance of the ores in the high-power pilot scale tests and thus can be used as a pre-screening tool. The effects of high-power microwave pre-treatment on grindability and liberation were reported. Additionally, the ore sorting potential was evaluated using a combination of X-ray transmission (XRT) and microwave infrared (MW/IR).

Based on experimental continuous cooling transformation (CCT) diagrams, an artificial neural network has been trained to predict the amount of microsturctural constituents and hardness resulting from and controlled cooling at rates from 150 to 0.015 K/s. It can be applied to quenching and normalizing processes of low-alloy steels with 0.05-0.30 C% and 0.4-2.0% Mn -with possible microalloying additions. The U.S. Bureau of Mines and Western Fuels Utah, Inc. entered into an agreement to plan, install, and evaluate a micro-computer based monitoring and control system at Deserado Mine, an underground coal mine. The U.S. Bureau of Hines contracted the Colorado School of Mines (CSN) to independently evaluate the project. CSM evaluated and documented costs, benefits, problems, and management and labor perceptions in this report. Recommendations are provided for mine operators and monitoring system vendors considering future installations.

Technical & Procurement Services Limited (TECHPRO) in Ashford, Kent, UK, have been appointed as Project Managers for the major rehabilitation of the Copper Smelting complex of Nkana Division, Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines Limited, (ZCCM) Zambia. In outline, the overall scope covers three main areas: a) Transfer and implementation of new technology into Zambia for the production of primary copper. b) Replacement of gas collection and gas treatment circuits to guarantee high quality feed to the acid plants. c) Completion of a number of minor projects in the copper smelter and associated utility plants to complement changes in the primary smelting technique. This paper describes the Project Management methodology and style used by TECHPRO to tackle typical problems that arise in retrofit projects of this type. Reference is made specific aspects of the smelter projects to illustrate solutions to the problems. The subjects. addressed highlight the complexities not only of having a -Client 5,000 miles from the Project Office, but also the difficulty of co-ordinating and controlling the performance of min sub-contractors who are also geographically distant.

The Bureau of Mines is responsible for a broad spectrum of programs for meeting the diverse and changing mineral resource needs of the Nation. These programs are managed by the Director and two Deputy Directors, who formulate general policy and program direction from the Washington, D.C., headquarters. A senior advisory staff, consisting of the Chief Staff Officer, Chief Scientist, and Chief Mining Engineer, provides advice and consultation to the Director on a wide range of scientific and technical matters and acts on behalf of the Director to maintain liaisons with other government agencies, mineral industries, and professional societies. Bureau program activities are classified into two major functions: (1) Developing new and improved technology that will make the production and processing of minerals more efficient, safer and more healthful for mineral workers and the public, and more compatible with a quality environment.

The types of equipment available for generating a plasma have been reviewed. The efficiency and potential of the plasma generating equipment used in performing extractive metallurgical reactions have been determined. A general classification of the reactions that might be per-formed in a plasma has been proposed. Experimental work done on extractive metallurgical plasma reactions, heat transfer between the plasma and solids, and the quench of the products of plasma reaction has been summarized. From the preliminary results it appears that the high-intensity are or the transpiration-cooled anode plasma torch offer the most promising areas for further research. C ONSIDERABLE world-wide research effort is currently being devoted to the development of processing technologies which employ the new high-temperature generating devices that have appeared over the past few years. The plasma flames produced by these devices offer the potential for subjecting materials to any single gas or mixture of gases at temperatures up to 20,000°K. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has conducted studies using microwave energy to stress-crack iron ores. In a microwave chamber which simulates a continuous throughput operation, the Bond grindability of a taconite sample was improved by 13 pct at a bulk temperature of 197? C. To further improve the economics of microwave fracturing, higher powers up to 16 kW were used to rapidly heat samples to relatively low temperatures in a continuous belt-fed applicator. A significant enhancement of grindability was obtained with a minus 1.9-cm taconite rod mill feed. At a sample temperature of 130? C, the grindability was improved a maximum of 26.1 pct over the non-microwaved sample.

Gasoline has become of such commercial and military importance that it is now practically indispensable. This product is of special interest because, in addition to realizing its value, the Nation is learn- ing that the raw materials from which gasoline is obtained are not unlimited. ACTIVITIES OF THE BUREAU OF MINES IN PROMOTING EFFICIENCY IN THE PRODUCTION AND UTILIZATION OF GASOLINE. The Bureau of Mines has directly and indirectly worked for the conservation and efficient utilization of this important product. Some of the bureau's activities have been along lines widely different from those reported in this bulletin. The work of the bureau toward the increase in efficiency of processes for the production and refining of crude oil is too well known to need mention here. Another line of activity in which the bureau has engaged is the collection and publi- cation of statistics on refinery operations. Finally, as immediate preparation for the present bulletin, two surveys of the gasoline mar- keting situation have been made. The primary object of this bul- letin is to make available to the public information obtained in con- nection with these surveys. PURPOSE OF THE GASOLINE SURVEYS OF 1917 AND 1919. Shortly after the United States declared war on Germany the bureau collected gasoline samples in the retail market throughout various parts of the country. Information regarding the sources of these gasolines and the details of marketing them was obtained, and they were subjected to analytical tests which furnished conclusive informa- tion regarding their properties. The information obtained through this survey proved of inestimable value both to the bureau and the United States Fuel Administration, particularly in drawing up speci- fications and in ascertaining the best means of obtaining supplies of particular types of gasoline that were needed. A similar and more extensive survey was made in the months of April and May, 1919, in order to obtain data needed for the revision of the Federal motor gasoline specification. The specification adopted during the war had been the subject of numerous complaints, and it seemed desirable to determine whether or not these objections were valid before attempting revision.

The 53 countries that constituted Africa in 1992 accounted for a significant portion of total world output of a number of mineral commodities. However, the continent's total output for a number of major mineral commodities declined relative to the volume produced during 1991. (See tables 1 and 2.) The most conspicuous declines in mineral production from 1991 to 1992 were for cobalt and copper (declines of 28.6 % and 23.4 %, respectively), which could be partially attributed to mining and metal processing difficulties caused by political and economic disruptions in Zaire and for uranium (12 % drop), for which much of the continental production decline was ascribed to Namibian cutbacks in response to lower world prices. The severe regional drought also adversely affected the mineral industry in a number of sub-Saharan nations.

The zinc smelter of Cominco Ltd. at Trail, B.C. Is the largest In the western world. A total of 550.000 tonnes of concentrate are proceed at the smelter annually. Approximately 80% of the zinc concentrate is roasted and the remainder Is treated by aqueous oxidation preaaure leaching. The zinc concentrate roasting and sulphur dioxide gas processing plants have undergone many changes over the years. This paper describes the processes and equipment currently used for concentrate roasting, S02 gas cooling and cleaning, mercury removal, sulphuric acid production liquid S02 production, and tall gas S02 scrubbing. The recent Installation of an advanced process control system for the operation of these Integrated processes Is also described.
