"Jones & Laughlin Mining Company, Ltd. operate the Adams mine at Kirkland Lake, Ontario, where they mine approximately 4,000,000 tons of extremely hard iron-formation and 3,500,000 tons of volcanic waste rock annually in order to produce 1,100,000 tons of iron pellets. This paper will discuss the maintenance of the four Model 1600 P & H shovels and the two 50-R drills used to obtain this production. The chief maintenance problems at the mine are due to the hard, abrasive ore and the cold winter weather."

Graduate education is an integral part of the Center's research program. The scope of. work and the duration of each research project is calculated, in part, by taking into consideration the needs of the graduate research program and graduate training. Full development of student involvement, as demonstrated by the research practicum which is offered to qualified senior undergraduates at Penn State University and is designed to acquaint them with research methods and techniques and inform them of the opportunities available in this field. and the fulfillment of graduate program requirements are of the utmost concern. The Pennsylvania State University and West Virginia University have accredited mining engineering curricula and rank among the schools with the largest enrollment in this area in the nation. The number of undergraduate students enrolled in mining engineering at Penn State and West Virginia University account for nearly 20%, of the total undergraduate enrollment in this discipline in schools across the United States. The Pennsylvania State University. West Virginia University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Minnesota, and Michigan Technological University, have granted a total of thirty-five (35) doctorate and masters degrees which can be directly attributed to research conducted in the Center.' Of these graduates, fifteen(15) have found employment in the mineral sector of the economy, i.e., in private industry, with government agencies, and at various universities, worldwide. In addition, a number of those graduating with masters degrees are currently pursuing a doctorate degree.

To extract the gold from refractory gold concentrate with high sulfur and arsenic, the gold concentrate was catalytically oxidized to expose the gold for cyanide leaching. The effects of reaction temperature, initial nitric acid concentration, reaction time and initial gold concentrate concentration on the conversion rate were studied. The results show that the appropriate conditions for the catalytical oxidation of this gold concentrate are: reaction temperature of 65 oC; initial nitric acid concentration of 25% (wt.); reaction time of 1.5 hours; initial gold concentrate concentration of 10% (wt.). Under such conditions, the conversion rate of gold concentrate is 92%. The solution can be used to prepare nano-iron oxide red pigment. Gases released in the process can be recycled and reused by oxidation absorption. A chemical background of catalytic oxidation is proposed.

For stabilizing the production of containing nitrogen steels, a study on nitrogen absorption behavior of killed molten steel has been carried out by means of the RH vacuum device in which nitrogen was used as a driving gas. The results showed that there was an increase of nitrogen content in molten steel under vacuum processing but the rate of nitrogen absorption was slowed down by the surface active elements. Therefore, a kinetic equation for nitrogen absorption of molten steel with apparent first order reaction was derived by constructing a modified model in which the adsorption of closed surface site was taken into account. The experimental results confiimed that the calculated values agreed with the observed ones. This model is suitable for the prediction of nitrogen adsorption operation for containing nitrogen steels.

The Bureau of Mines has developed a very rapid gas chromatographic method for routine determination of oxygen, nitrogen, methane, and carbon dioxide in mine atmosphere samples. Analysis is accomplished in 3 min; readout appears on a single strip chart. The gas sample is split between two columns contained in separate chromatographs. A 5 A molecular sieve column separates oxygen, nitrogen, and methane; a porous polymer column separates carbon dioxide from an air peak. Direct selective analysis of methane from this unresolved air peak is accomplished using a hydrogen flame ionization detector (FID). Carbon dioxide is catalytically converted to methane and detected by FID.

THE New Jersey Zinc Co.'s vertical retort plants are believed to have been in continuous operation through the whole year. At Palmerton metal purer than that made from the same ore in the old plant has been produced and has been able to compete successfully with very pure electrolytic metal in die castings and other special uses where extreme purity is worth money. A new plant using this process was put in production by the Grasselli Chemical Co. at Meadowbrook, W. Va., early in the summer. It is said to be working very satisfactorily. It is understood that this plant will not produce high-grade metal. Two patents issued to Bunce and Mahler (Nos. 1,749,126 and 1,749,127) describe a method of operating the vertical retort so that practically lead-free metal can be obtained from ores containing consider- able lead. The zinc vapors and other gases leaving the reaction zone are filtered through a column of material maintained at a temperature high enough to prevent much zinc from condensing. The filtering medium is either periodically or continuously changed.

In 2009, the estimated real GDP of the United States decreased by 2.4 percent compared with, and the estimated nominal GDP was about $14.2 trillion (Table 1). Trends in various sectors of the domestic economy are often reflected in mineral production and consumption rates. In 2009, the continued decline of the housing market was reflected in reductions in the production and consumption of cement, clays, construction sand and gravel, and crushed stone (those mineral commodities that are used almost exclusively in construction). Production of mineral commodities associated with the manufacture of goods for the housing market, such as ceramic tile, heating and air conditioning equipment, paint, plumbing and sanitaryware, roofing, wiring and wallboard also decreased. On July 10, 1926, lightning struck at Picatinny Arsenal, New Jersey, and caused the explosion of at least 600,000 pounds (272,000 kilograms) of ammunition, resulting in more than $600 million (2015 dollars) in damage, the destruction of 200 buildings, and 22 deaths. Fortunately, there has not been a major incident involving lightning and explosives in the US in some time, though lightning has destroyed fuel storage tanks in recent years, including in North Dakota, Texas, and Ohio. Lightning poses a significant hazard to the explosives industry. Carrying high currents and temperature, lightning can cause explosives to detonate, start fires near storage facilities, and injure or kill operators.

"Mechanical Thermal Expression (MTE) is a developing non-evaporative lignite dewatering technology. It has been shown to effectively dewater high moisture content in low rank coals via the application of mechanical force and thermal energy at elevated temperatures. In this paper, the dewatering behavior of Yunnan Xiaolongtang lignite during the MTE-process was studied. Furthermore, how variations in temperature and pressure during the MTE process affect the surface oxygen functional groups and pore structure were also discussed using Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR) and mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP). Increases in MTE temperature and pressure resulted in significant reductions in residual moisture content and moisture holding capacity, along with the increase of fixed carbon content and reductions of other elements content, especially oxygen content, which have been largely attributed to the destruction of the surface oxygen functional groups and porosity in lignite. The optimized technology conditions are temperature 150~220°C and pressure 7~10MPa. The residual moisture content of the lignite treated by MTE under the conditions of 200°C and 10MPa is decreased to 8%, while the dewatering rate exceeds 76 % and the calorific value approaches 22 MJ/kg. The experimental results offer a deeper understanding of the influence of process parameters on the lignite stuctures and properties. The reduction in residual moisture content, surface oxygen functional groups and pore volume under increasingly severe MTE conditions are suggestive of the structure changes that accompany increased coalification (rank) within the lignitic range."

The enrichment of useful components from ores and/or wastes has become important with increasing recent worldwide resources demand and the amount of wastes generated from the urban mines, in order to establish real ?sound resource-cycle society? including the activity of resource exploitation. The first stage of the treatment in the process must be comminution and it is important to make good liberation among compositional phases in the targeted resources. Electrical disintegration (ED) is well known to make a selective breakage at phase boundary. However, the detailed mechanism of the phenomena is not clarified yet, in especial, on the influence of electrical properties of compositional materials on the liberation. This paper made a comparison between the liberation degrees of ED products and the results of electromagnetic field analysis using finite element method (FEM). In the experiments, we used several synthetic cement paste based samples in which mineral particles were dispersed to apply the ED, and in the electromagnetic field analysis, we calculated the charge density accumulated and the Maxwell stress at phase boundary. It was found, for highly insulating mineral samples, that higher breakdown voltage was necessary because electric charge was not easily accumulated at phase boundary but that higher liberation degree was obtained after the breakdown (ED). It was also found the tendency that higher liberation was observed for the samples which had higher maximum Maxwell stress calculated by the electromagnetic field analysis. From the results, the electrical charge and Maxwell stress induced at phase boundary could be driving forces of selective breakage. In addition, we also applied the ED to the printed circuit boards (PCBs) in order to concentrate miner rare metals, which were essential for producing electronic devices. It could be demonstrated that the devices installed on the PCB were easily detached from the board and that most of metal elements in the devices was exposed and liberated from the insulating plastic covers, which were broken in the ED, then, it is considered that the subsequent solid phase separation could be effective for concentrating such metal elements. "The risk of developing silicosis in underground coal miners, tunnel workers and some foundry workers is well-known. These persons generally develop the classic form of the disease over a prolonged period of time. Workers involved in abrasive blasting of bridges and those polishing tombstones have been reported to develop an acute form of silicosis within a few years of commencing exposure. Not well-appreciated is the potential for development of acute silicosis among drillers at surface coal mines. We report the case of a 33-year--old man who worked primarily at surf ace drilling, developed acute silicosis within three years of beginning exposure, and who initially responded dramatically to corticosteroid therapy. CASE REPORTThe patient is a 33-year-old white man who worked as a rock driller at a quarry and also at surface coal mines in western Pennsylvania since 1975. Prior to 1983, much of his work was done with a wet process in which water was applied to reduce dust generation. After 1983 he worked primarily as a driller at a surface coal mine using a dry process. He never wore a respirator. He described the dust as being so dense that he ""couldn't see anything.- In August 1986, he presented to his local physician with a complaint of pleuritic chest pain and shortness of breath. A chest x-ray film was obtained showing only a few p and q opacities. He continued working and these symptoms subsided, but the patient noted the onset of progressive weight loss. By May 1987, he had lost approximately 50 lb. In addition, he suffered profound malaise, dyspnea, migratory chest pain and arthralgia, fevers and drenching night sweats.A course of erythromycin therapy given in the hospital resulted in only fleeting improvement. Studies for Legionella and Mycoplasma infections were negative, as was a tuberculin skin test. The patient was transferred to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh on June 4, 1987.There was no history of serious medical illness, including tuber¬culosis. The patient admitted to smoking between I and 1 1/2 packages of cigarettes daily for 2 1/2 years prior to May 1987 when he stopped smoking. He denied intravenous drug abuse, homosexual activity or receiving transfusions of blood or blood products.On physical examination the patient was a thin, febrile white man who appeared chronically ill. Bilateral axillary and cervical lymphadenopathy was present. Chest examination showed restricted expansion and bilateral crackles. Examination of the heart and abdomen disclosed no abnormalities."

Under the new normal state, blast furnace outputneeds to be adapted to the market demand, however the limitation in blast furnace output has significant impact on blast furnace operation and is prone to cause inactive furnace hearth and higher fuel ratio. To address such problems, some practices to maintain stable and smooth operation of blast furnace in case of output limitation are proposed based on data analysis philosophy, which allows the blast flow and hence the top pressure to be determined based on the hot metal output, and adequate kinetic energy of blast supply can be assured by adjusting the tuyeres. Matching between the oxygen enrichment and the pulverized coal injection is also proposed based on theoretical flametemperature, and burden distribution cycle calculation method is proposed, whichoffersnew approach for analyzing the change in burden distribution pattern.

The difficulties associated with the operation of a classical rhodium refining process have prompted many attempts to develop a viable solvent extraction flowsheet for rhodium. Recent investigations at McGill University have involved the activation of rhodium prior to its solvent extraction. The role of activation is to convert the aquochloro complexes of rhodium to a form extractable by conventional solvent extraction reagents. In the novel separation scheme identified, chloro complexes of rhodium are converted to bromo complexes, which undergo aquation to a lesser extent, making them more easily extracted. Rhodium is then extracted using Kelex 100, and stripping is achieved by use of a concentrated chloride based solution. Separation of rhodium from iridium is achieved by either prior reduction of Ir(IV) to Ir(III), as the latter is not extracted, or via co-extraction and differential stripping. A conceptual flowsheet for the refining of rhodium using this method is proposed.

Reverse cationic flotation is the most widely utilized flotation method for concentrating iron ore. In this process, quartz is often floated with ether amines (R?(OCH2)3?NH2) partially neutralized with acetic acid. However, it is well known that the cationic flotation of quartz does not work well if a certain amount of slime is present in the ore slurry. To improve flotation performance, starch is often added to the flotation feed to selectively flocculate and depress the iron minerals and sodium silicate is used to disperse the silica gangue. The present study was conducted to improve the efficiency of iron ore flotation by the use of a new type of depressant for clay and iron minerals, Georgia Pacific (GP) clay binder. The GP clay binder minimizes slime adsorption on quartz and hematite particles by agglomerating clay particles to reduce their surface area. It also helps depress hematite flotation due to its unique chelating action on iron ions. The results from this study show that the GP clay binder is an effective depressant in iron ore flotation. When it was used as a substitute for corn starch, it increased concentrate grade from 60.78% to 67.67% and increased iron recovery from 71.96% to 72.90%. The combined use of GP clay binder with corn starch produced even better flotation performance, increasing iron recovery to 78.15%, while the concentrate grade remained stable at 67.08%. "SynopsisThe development of plasma technology at Necsa started in the early 1980s, when the applicability of high-temperature plasmas in the nuclear fuel cycle was investigated. Since 1995, this plasma expertise has expanded to other industrial applications, for example mineral beneficiation, nanotechnology, fluorocarbon production and waste treatment, all of which are also of relevance to the nuclear industry.Necsa has demonstrated the manufacture of plasma-dissociated zircon, zirconium metal powder, carbon nanotubes, silicon carbide (SiC), zirconium carbide (ZrC) and boron carbide (B4C) at the laboratory and pilot plant scale. These materials are commonly used in the nuclear industry. Zirconium alloys are used as fuel cladding material for nuclear fuel assemblies.Necsa manufactured the monomer tetrafluoroethylene (TFE), using 150 and 450 kW DC plasma systems, from which the polymer polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) was synthesized for use in filters and as seals in nuclear plants. With the nuclear renaissance at hand, it was demonstrated that plasma technology can be used to produce hydrofluoric acid (HF), which is used in the manufacture of fluorine gas (F2) for the production of uranium hexafluoride (UF6) directly from the mineral calcium fluoride (CaF2) without the use of sulphuric acid as in the conventional process. The recovery of valuable uranium from nuclear waste such as filters, oils, and solids with plasma processes will also be discussed. The destruction of low-level nuclear waste by a plasma gasification system can reduce the volume of this waste by several orders in magnitude, resulting in huge savings in the storage costs. Another product of plasma technology is the encapsulation process for nuclear waste and the production of vitrified product, which could be used as filler material for medium-level nuclear waste.IntroductionDuring the 1980s, a plasma research and development programme was launched at the erstwhile Uranium Enrichment Corporation of South Africa (UCOR) at Valindaba outside Pretoria. The main purpose of this programme was to develop alternative and more economical processes for the processing and manufacturing of uranium compounds used in the nuclear fuel cycle. The conversion of UO2 (as received from uranium mines) to UF6, which is needed for enrichment, conventionally involves several laborious, expensive, chemical processing steps. Plasma processes can eliminate several of the intermediate steps. Enriched UF6 is converted to UO2, which is pressed into pellets that are used in nuclear power plants. Plasma technology could also be used in a modified and optimized conversion process."

It is expected that an Al-Cr-N composite nitride film may have a higher resistance to oxidation at elevated temperatures than the well-known Ti-Al-N films. The formation conditions of Al-Cr-N films by a de reactive sputtering method and their properties were studied in this study. The films characterized with respect to their high temperature properties such as chemical composition, crystal structure, microhardness, wear and· friction. The crystal structure of the Al-Cr-N films changed from hexagonal phase to cubic phase with an increase in Cr content in the films. The resistivity to thermal oxidation of the Al-Cr-N films is superior to that of usual TI-Al-N films. A half of the friction coefficient in the Al-Cr-N film was obtained comparing with that in the ordinary TI-Al-N film at room temperature and the wear rate of Al-Cr-N film was 2 order smaller than that of TI-Al-N film. The Al-Cr-N films show a small friction coefficient at 500°C and then they are recognized to have good tribological characteristics.

The integration of three-dimensional (3D) data with infrared thermography has received much attention for its potential use as input data for building energy simulations. Therefore, researchers have proposed methods to integrate 3D data with infrared thermography obtained by different sensors. These studies show the potential of the integration of 3D data and infrared thermography using various systems. However, these studies have ignored property aspects of infrared thermography, such as the low resolution of infrared thermography and external environmental influences. Thus, their proposed methods to integrate 3D data and infrared thermography are inadequate because these problems can affect the resulting building energy simulation. This research proposes a framework that integrates infrared thermography and 3D data while accounting for the resolution and shadow effect of infrared thermography. The proposed framework consists of three steps. In the resolution enhancement step, bi-cubic interpolation is proposed. In thermal data correction from the shadow effect, the shadow area is detected from the visible image, and then the shadow effect is removed from the registered infrared thermography. Finally, enhanced infrared thermography is mapped to the 3D data obtained by a laser scanner. The performance of the proposed framework was evaluated using test images obtained from a building in operation. The experimental results show that the proposed framework provides a 3D thermal model that is useful and accurate in simulating building energy. It is expected that the 3D thermal model can be used for accurate energy simulation of existing buildings. In addition, the proposed framework can be applied in defect detection for buildings. Furthermore, this novel approach enhances infrared thermography using visible images.

The Hama Mining Company owns and operates The Groveland Mine near Iron Mountain, in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The orebody is part of the Menominee Range of the Lake Superior District. The ore (generally known as Jasper taconite) contains an average of 35% iron ranging from 28% to 39% with an overall split of 60% magnetite and 40% hematite. The variations encountered throughout the orebody require a certain amount of blending to reduce feed changes to the mill. One of the variables which affects the crushers, as well as the mill, is the range of hardness which has a low of 7.9 and a high of 24.6 as measured by the Bond Twin pendulum impact and crushing technique. Reference is made to hardness only to point out its effect on crushing and wear rate variations. Over a period of time, these variables do, of course, average out. Mining of the low grade ore started in 1959 and has operated continuously to date. Preparation of the feed for conventional rod and ball mill grinding is accomplished by three stages of crushing. Reduction of crude ore is first passed through a 54 inch gyratory crusher; then through a secondary crusher; followed by two or three tertiary crushers in closed circuit with screens as production quotas require (Figure 1). Current demand to the crushers is about 5,200,000 tons of crude ore per year.
