The United StatesÆ reporting standard for the mining industry for securities purposes is contained in the Security and Exchange CommissionÆs Industry Guide 7. It defines proven and probable Reserves using its own definitions, and prohibits the disclosure of quantitative estimates, for all mineralisation other than those two Reserve categories (though disclosure of Measured and Indicated Resources as quantitative mineralised material estimates is now informally allowed). Similarly, it restricts disclosure of value estimates to Reserves only, which SEC policy generally requires to be on an historic cost accounting basis. The SEC does not maintain a formal Competent or Qualified Person policy. In March 1999, the US-based Society of Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration (SME) released an update of its 1991 guidelines for definitions to be used in reporting of Mineral Resources, Reserves and Exploration Information, closely abiding by the 1997 CMMI recommendations. However, without SEC recognition, reporting under the SME and CMMI definitions is effectively barred for US companies. The SEC intends to adopt the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) of the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB). This will occur within just a few years, when the convergence project for development of the IFRS has reached a satisfactory point. The US is the largest financial supporter and participator in IASB. The Extractive Industries Standard of the IFRS will likely terminate Industry Guide 7. However, the effect of this international replacement will likely be equally restrictive. This could possibly neutralise the benefit of a CMMI-based global reporting standard. SME, the US society encompassing the widest range of mining industry professionals, does not have a Code of Ethics. It has no mechanism for requiring members to abide by a professional standard. SME is presently looking into possible solutions for this deficiency. US-based professional societies that do have a binding Code of Ethics, generally cater to a single profession, and are not just mining industry related. The American Institute of Professional Geologists (AIPG) and the American Institute of Minerals Appraisers (AIMA) are examples. The SME is considering creating a subsidiary body with an enforceable Code of Ethics. To support a CMMI-based global reporting standard, competent persons will need to work across international borders. A standardised mechanism for qualifying and registering competent persons will be needed. National rules and laws must allow competent persons to easily enter countries to perform their work. State issued licenses are increasingly required for much of the work performed in the US mining industry by engineers, geologists and minerals appraisers (valuers). Such licenses are not required by the SEC for Reserve reporting in the US, may not be required for valuation of mineral properties under certain circumstances, and except for real property valuer licenses, they generally do not have a binding code of conduct. However, state licensing of professionals forms a substantial and increasing barrier to interstate trade in professional services, and can be a prohibitive barrier to professionals from outside the US. Any rationalisation of this confusing patchwork of regulations confronting US minerals industry practitioners will only occur as part of larger, national change, hopefully aimed at compliance with international standards and protocols. The US does not have a valuation standard aimed specifically at the mining industry. The Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice, the national valuation standards, often must be applied to mineral property valuation, but contains no specific instructions for minerals. The author has campaigned against development of minerals valuation standards proposed by US minerals institutes. Instead he encourages the mining industry worldwide to place its support behind the initiative of the International Valuation Standards Committee (IVSC) to include an extractive industries section in its International Valuation Standards (IVS). This should provide a global set of valuation standards for the mining and petroleum industry within two years. This addition to IVS will provide essential valuation standards reference support for the extractive industries financial reporting standard of the International Accounting Standards Board. The IVS has achieved a high level of acceptance in the developed and lesser developed countries of the world. It provides a comprehensive framework of Generally Accepted Valuation Principles for the valuation profession internationally, for valuation of all property or asset types. IVSC is effectively a sister organisation to IASB. The IASBÆs International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), previously known as the International Accounting Standards (IAS), reference and quote IVS in some instructions for determination of fair value. IVSC is a non-governmental organisation (NGO) member of the United Nations and maintains liaison with many important international economic, accounting and financial agencies, such as the OECD, IMF and WTO.

This paper focuses on the seasonal thermo-mechanical response of two energy foundations installed at the new Denver Housing Authority Senior Living Facility in Denver, Colorado. The two drilled shaft foundations, which have diameters of 36 inches and depths of 45 ft and are end bearing in the Denver shale formation, include a closedloop series of polyethylene tubes through which fluid is circulated to exchange heat with the surrounding ground. The tubes within the foundations are coupled together with the conventional ground source heat pump system for the building and were installed to evaluate the heat exchange response of the foundations as well as any thermomechanical soil-structure interaction effects. A series of vibrating wire strain gages and thermistors were installed at different depths in the foundation to record the thermomechanical strain and temperature at different depths. Also, pipe-plug thermocouples are used to measure the inlet and outlet temperature of the heat exchanger fluid entering each of the foundations, which is necessary to evaluate the total heat exchange for the foundations and the efficiency of the heat pump. This paper will describe the energy foundation construction processes, the strain distribution and ambient temperature profiles during building construction and the seasonal strain and temperature distributions during heating and cooling of the building. The data indicates that typical heat exchange associated with heating and cooling operations leads to strains which are within acceptable limits, and that the foundations can provide a clear option for absorbing the base heating and cooling load for the building.

The efficient operation of large haul trucks in large open pit mines requires an economic trade off between the haul route quality, the haul truck payloads and the level of haul truck reliability. This paper describes an investigation into the relation- ship between haul route surface quality and the level of structural reliability of a haul truck main frame. An instrumentation system for unattended recording of data on a haul truck operating normally in a mine and com- puter based analytical procedures were developed and used to identify which road segments contribute significantly to fatigue cracking at various sections of a haul truck main frame. INTRODUCTION In many open pit mines there is exten- sive use of large haul trucks to move over- burden and minerals. In most open pit hard rock mines, both the overburden and mineral ore are moved by large rear dump type haul trucks. Automation technologies are increasingly envisaged to improve underground mining productivity. However, the technologies need to be used and adopted gradually in order to get the best benefits. This paper presents the technical and operational aspects of autoguided production vehicles at Brunswick Mine. During 2001 Noranda?s Brunswick Mine has successfully commissioned an automated haulage zone where two optically guided trucks transport ore from a remotely operated chute to two orepasses. Operational advantages include increased system capacity and enhanced safety and comfort for the operator. The data obtained up to now indicate that the system can operate reliably in mine production

A study was made of the effect of the growth conditions on the perfection of single crystals of niobium (columbium). Dislocation densities, determined by means of double-crystal diffractometer measurements , were not greatly affected by the method of crystal preparation but could be reduced by annealing treatments. However, the size, sharpness, and tilt angles of the substructures, observed with X-ray reflection macrograph, were sensitive to variations in growth procedures as well as to subsequent thermal treatments. Although the dislocation density was the same in both types, there were more low-angle bound-aries in crystals grown by zone melting than in those prepared by strain anneal. Mechanisms to account for these observations are discussed in terms of dislocation movements. A planned study of the structure-sensitive properties of refractory metals required the use of single crystals of a high degree of structural perfection and, for ease of handling, of large cross section. It appeared that the strain-anneal technique could satisfy both of these requirements. First, crystals grown in the solid state have been reported to be more perfect than those obtained from the melt.' Second, the diameters of rods which may be produced by zone melting should have a theoretical limit determined by specific gravity, thermal conductivity, and surface tension, while the diameter of strain-annealed rods is limited only by practical considerations. Previously it was shown that niobium (columbium) single crystals of 1 in. diam2 may be grown by strain anneal, compared to the 0.5 in. maximum diameter achieved by zone melting, as reported for molybdenum by Belk.3 The current research was undertaken to investigate and optimize the effect of various process variables on the perfection of 1/4 and 1/2-in.-diam niobium single crystals grown by strain annealing and to compare their perfection to those grown by zone melting. Characterization of these crystals was more conveniently accomplished by means of X-ray than by metallo-graphic techniques. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Specimen Preparation. Zone-melted crystals of 1/4 in. diam were produced by the standard electron-beam zone-melting technique. The swaged and cleaned rods were outgassed, in the solid state at a temperature near its melting point, at a rate of 12 in. per hr, and single crystals were grown by making two molten passes at 2 in. per hr. By maintaining a zone length of 4 to % in., very uniform single crystals several inches long were obtained. For the strain-annealed crystals, an induction heater was used, in preference to other types of heating, to take advantage of the good penetration of large sections. A five-turn coil, 1 in. long, operating at 10 kc and powered by a motor generator, was contained in a vacuum chamber. The rod, suspended from the upper end, was raised through the coil for both recrystallization and crystal growth. In preliminary work single crystals of the same material were also grown with single and multiturn coils powered by a 450-kc generator. A vacuum of 2 X 10-6 Torr was maintained at temperatures up to 2400°C. Starting with electron-beam-melted ingots of 21/2 in. diam, the analysis for which is given in Table I, the material was cold-swaged to the desired cross section of 1/4 and 1/2 in. diam and then recrystallized. The rods were then strained in a tensile machine and converted to single crystals by passing through the induction coil. As with zone melting, control of orientation is possible by the use of special procedures. Other investigators, see for example Williamson and smallman,4 have reported that orientation control may be achieved by a bending technique. In the present work the strained rod is partially lowered through the coil to start the growth of the crystal. Then it is removed and bent at a point in the poly crystalline portion. Finally, it is returned to the chamber and growth is continued "around the corner". This procedure has certain limitations. If the bending operation exceeds the critical strain, recrystallization may take place. Also, the amount of bending which can be imparted to the rod is limited by coil geometry, and up to now has been 10 deg. However, by repeating the bending and growing operations it should be possible to attain any desired orientation. In preparation for X-ray examination, single crystals were sectioned and planed by means of the spark-erosion technique. The tellurium-rich region of the Sb-TI-Te ternary system was investigated by means of DTA, metallo-graphic, X-ray, and electron beam microprobe techniques on the sections Sb2Te3-T12Te3, SbTlTe2-Te, SbT1Te2-Sb2Te3, and SbTlTe2-T12Te3. The phase behavior of this region is summarized in terms of four ternary invariant reactions and a schematic reaction diagram is suggested. Isopleths for the sections SbT1Te2-Sb2Te3, Sb2Te,-T12Te3, and SbTlTe2-Te were constructed, and a schematic diagram of the projections of the liquidus lines and invariant planes is presented. No evidence was found to support the existence of the ternary compound "SbTlTe3", or pseudo-binary behavior of the section T12Te3-Sb2Te3, as reported by Borisova and Efremova. Electrical conductivity, Seebeck coefficient, and thermal conductivity measurements were made at room temperature on fully annealed samples. 1 HE phase relationships in chalcogenides are often complex and difficult to resolve, particularly since the approach to equilibrium is a rather slow process. For example, the phase diagram of the T1-Te binary system was in doubt until clarified by Rabenau et al.,1 the phase fields at compositions near Bi2Te3 in the Bi-Te binary system have only recently been satisfactorily elucidated by Glatz,2 and there may still be some question as to the extent of the Sb2Te3 field in the Sb-Te system.3-5 In ternary systems, the existence of the compound "AgFeTe2" was the subject of a number of conflicting reports6-8 and the stoichiometry of the composition "AgSbTe2" was in doubt for a period of time.9 Recently, questions have arisen regarding the existence of certain compounds in the ternary systems Bi-Tl-Te10-14 and Sb-Tl-Te.15 The impetus for studies of these latter systems stemmed from the report of Borisova et a1.10 of a congruently melting ternary compound, "BiTlTe3", which apparently had extremely favorable thermoelectric properties for room-temperature cooling applications. Attempts by other investigators to produce the compound or confirm the transport properties proved to be unsuccessful.12-14 Recently, Chiang and Gluck14 reported studies of the phase relations in the tellurium-rich region of the Bi-T1-Te system which indicated that the section T12Te3-Bi2Te3 was not pseudobinary as suggested by Borisova et a1.10 The contention of Spitzer and sykes12 was supported that the composition "BiT1Te3" was multiphase, with the primary constituent actually being BiTlTe2, a compound whose existence has been well demonstrated.16,17 The investigation reported in the present paper was prompted by a later report of Borisova and Efremova15 on a similar study of the section T12Te3-Sb2Te3 from the Sb-T1-Te system. They also claimed this section to be pseudobinary, and that a ternary compound "SbTlTe," was formed peritectically. Some "preliminary" crystallographic data were given for the compound and thermoelectric transport properties were presented. In view of the questions concerning the behavior of the Bi-T1-Te system and the existence of the compound "BiT1Te3" it was suspected that the Sb-T1-Te system might behave in a similar fashion, particularly in light of the known existence of a compound SbT1Te2, iso-structural with BiT1Te2.17 Consequently, an investigation was undertaken to clarify the phase relationships in the tellurium-rich region of the Sb-T1-Te system. It is the purpose of this paper to present the results of this study, including a representation of the phase relations, isopleths for various composition sections, and the determination of some phase compositions and transport properties. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Commercially available high-purity (99.999+ pct) elements, purchased from the American Smelting and Refining Co., were used for the sample preparation. All samples were made from thoroughly mixed powders of previously prepared master alloys: SbTlTe2, Te, Sb2Te3, and T12Te3. Stoichiometric quantities of the constituents for each 10-g sample were weighed into a specially cleaned fused silica tube and sealed under a vacuum of better than 5 x 10-5 torr. The sealed constituents were fused and reacted at 650° to 750°C for at least 4 hr under continuous agitation in a "rocking" furnace, and the resulting product was air-cooled. The tube was opened and the sample was ground to a powder. A portion of the powder was rebottled in a DTA tube under vacuum, and the rest of the material was similarly resealed in a separate tube, re-fused in the rocking furnace, and again cooled to make the ingots for electrical and microstructural studies. All samples were subjected to further heat treatments as discussed in the section on experimental results. Each DTA tube was made of 7-mm-OD fused silica tubing with a concentric 2-mm-ID depression about 4 mm long formed in the bottom to accommodate a thermocouple. The size of a DTA sample was 0.5 to 1.0 g. An Aminco Thermoanalyzer whose accuracy was within 2°C18 was used for the DTA measurements. The metallographic samples were prepared by conventional techniques. A solution of FeCL dissolved in a methanol-HC1 mixture was found to be the most satisfactory etchant. Electron beam microprobe scanning and point-count examinations were made on polished and unetched samples using an ARL Electron Microprobe at an electron beam voltage of 20 kv. The detectors were set to receive characteristic La1 radiation. FOR a number of years European investigators have used laboratory methods of predicting the probable strength of coke made from coal, and recently several investigators in the United States have reported the use of various tests for this purpose. There is at present no method accepted as standard, however, nor is there even agreement as to the general type of test that should be used. Furthermore, because the details of most of the tests have not been worked out carefully, one investigator can not hope to duplicate the work of another. The extension of coke manufacture to new localities in the United States, and the increasing need for cokes of exceptional qualities made from the most economical mixtures, made it desirable to have some simple laboratory test which will determine whether given coals, alone or blended with other coals, are more satisfactory from the standpoint of coke strength than others of different cost. The work described herein has resulted in the development of a simple laboratory test which, it is believed, can be generally adopted in coal laboratories, and which will give concordant results even though performed by different investigators in different laboratories. The general method of predicting whether a coal or a mixture of coals will produce a strong coke, resistant to crushing and shattering, has been to correlate the known strengths of the cokes produced in commercial ovens with some measurable constituent or with some property of the coals, and then to use the relationship so found for forming an estimate of the coking strengths of coals unknown. Several such correlations have utilized the percentages of the various ultimate constituents of coal, such as the oxygen content and the hydrogen-oxygen ratio;(39)§ other correlations have involved the proportion of a, (3 and y compounds, (17'21,30 or of "oil and solid bitumens."(16,30) Also a relationship has been traced between the coking properties of coal and the rate of change of the resistance offered to the flow of an inert gas by fine particles of the coal while being slowly heated. In some respects, forward combustion (alias: fie-flooding, underground combustion, in-situ combustion, dry combustion) is an efficient oil recovery method. For example, its displacement efficiency (as much as 95 percent in reservoirs with high porosity and high oil saturation) is good. In its use of heat, however, forward combustion is grossly inefficient. Most of the heat generated during forward combustion is wasted. About one-fifth of the heat is picked up by the incoming air and re-used (regenerated); the remainder is left behind the combustion zone and ultimately is lost. Compressed air is expensive, and heat generated from compressed air via underground combustion is too valuable to be thrown away. Improvement is needed. Since the early 1950's, improvements in forward combustion by addition of water injection have been discussed, particularly in the patent literature, with increasing frequency.'-'' These concepts are based on the fact that relatively inexpensive water can be used to pick up much of the heat that is ordinarily wasted during forward combustion, and transport it forward to a more useful place, thereby reducing the amount of air required to move a heat front through the reservoir. Several approaches have been proposed. Merriam and Squires1 taught that a combustible (fuel) gas should be injected along with the air and water. This, however, would give at least a tendency toward reverse combustion instead of forward combustion, and would reduce the velocity of the heat bank, defeating the primary purpose of the water injection. Pelzer2 described primarily a batchwise method of forward combustion and water flooding. He advocated burning part way through a reservoir with forward combustion, then switching from air to water injection alone to push the heat toward the producing wells. Though possible, this method has serious disadvantages, the major one being that, by the time water injection is started, much of the heat has been irretrievably lost to the overlying and underlying formations. We have described what is considered a practical Combination Of Forward Combustion And Water-flooding (COFCAW).3,4 Air and water are injected simultaneously (or alternately) after a small heat bank has been formed by forward combustion. Some of the injected fluid fills up the region behind the heat bank; the rest enters the heat bank. Upon encountering heated rock, the water is converted into steam, which then flows ahead of the combustion zone and displaces much of the oil in place. Only enough air is injected to provide heat for vaporization of the water and to compensate for reservoir heat losses. Since the size of the heat bank is minimized, heat losses also are minimized. Because of more efficient oil displacement ahead of the combustion zone, fuel consumption is reduced. The availability of computer resources and data management technology, together with the prudent use of scientific management concepts, has made it possible to achieve important improvements in the control of maintenance and materials activities in the mining and minerals processing organization. The introduction of minicomputers and. the greatly improved efficiency of computer systems in general have put the use of computer technology within the reach of even the smaller mining companies which probably could not have afforded them just five to ten years ago. A number of progressive companies have implemented computer-based maintenance, purchasing, and supply inventory control systems. Using modern safety stock, demand forecasting, parts reliability analysis, and other control concepts, these new systems have helped minimize production losses by reducing the frequency and severity of supply shortages and unplanned repairs. At the same time, these systems are helping to conserve scarce capital resources by better utilization of supply inventory investments, reduced expenditures for maintenance, less frequent equipment replacements due to improved maintenance reliability, and greater capacity utilization of existing facilities.

INTRODUCTION There are three fronts on which development efforts are being concentrated to extend the application domain of Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM), which is potentially very large - Assessment of a reliable prediction method, including machine-rock interaction and geological characterisation, so that the boring system can be designed properly and the costs remain in the predicted range for each given tunnel project. - Development of lighter, more flexible and more controllable machines to be applied in shorter, deeper tunnels or roadways, such as required in mining. - Reduction of cutter and machine costs when excavating hard rocks or difficult grounds, in developing improved tool materials, cutting geometries and tunnelling systems. The above three lines of development have a common, critical requirement: to have a reliable set of design rules to optimize the machine specifications from the knowledge of rock and geological parameters and working requirements. This optimization can only be done if a model sufficiently sophisticated is made available, able to take into account the numerous factors influencing the TBM advance , and being interactive enough to achieve the optimization.

South Bulga Colliery, located near Singleton in the Hunter Valley region of Australia, began longwall production in late 1994. The mining conditions there are conducive to high productivity with good roof conditions and a shallow seam with production areas located close to the portal. When the longwall was commissioned, the low capacity and availability of the conveyor system greatly curtailed the mine's productivity. A number of changes were made to the conveyor system culminating in a drive change out to improve the system. Using South Bulga as a case study, this paper aims to demonstrate the absolute necessity of a reliable, high performance conveyor system for the viability of a mine, and some of the factors that are needed to ensure a conveyor system performs as intended. These factors include a thorough understanding of the individual components and how they influence and interact with each other; a system design that is tolerant of variations in component performance and the necessity of robust and reliable communications and PLC programming.

IN view of the great interest shown in the oil possibilities of Kentucky, one is impressed with the paucity of reliable literature on the oil fields of the state. A few brief reports by the Federal and State Geological Surveys are about the only reliable data available. When the estimated production figures, for 1918, are published by the U. S. Geological Survey, they will show a revival of the oil industry in the Blue Grass State during the past half decade. There will also be an increase in the production for 1919 and 1920, at least. Although as an oil-producing state Kentucky is small, compared with sonic of the other oil states, the present production and the area of undrilled proved territory is large enough to classify it as one of the important oil states of the Union. This paper will be confined to the Irvine District and the immediately adjoining areas which have been prospected with varying success. The Corniferous limestone or Irvine sand is the oil-producing formation in the area discussed.

In the early 1980s, underground coal miners in the USA wanted to build longer conveyors to handle larger capacities but continue to use fabric reinforced belting with mechanical fasteners. Conveyors with intermediate drives were certainly the answer but achieving reliable designs required a significant learning curve. Basic design methodologies had to evolve including advanced simulation of starting and stopping along with complex control techniques and logic. Some components also evolved as specific performance requirements changed Today, in addition to underground mining, the technology has been used extensively in the tunneling industry where the need is for control of belt tensions to negotiate tight horizontal curves. Even though intermediate drives are not used extensively on the surface yet, the lessons learned will find their way to long overland surface conveyance where smaller components are more available and reliable, and often with less capital cost. This paper will document the evolution of intermediate drive technology over the last 30 years and will show examples of its current use.

Several primary ingot producers have introduced price changes for July. Howmet Aluminum Corp., Revere Copper and Brass, Inc. and the Anaconda Co, will increase late-July prices of 99.5 percent unalloyed aluminum ingot by 3 cents to 56 cents per pound, Prior to this, Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Corp. had advanced June ingot values by 4 cents to 57 cents and Consolidated Aluminum Corp., 4.5 cents to 57.5 cents. Domestic merchants held June quotes at a range nearing 50-50.8 cents per pound. ANTIMONY Although NL Industries, since April of this year, stopped publishing prices for RMM and Lone Star antimony grade, values of domestically-refined antimony in alloy are being made available to industry, The current price of this material is $1.75 per pound of antimony contained in alloy, New York dealer-marketed metal was available in June at $1 -13-$1 .20 per pound. Important industrial uses of antimony are for flame retardants, storage batteries, chemicals, pigments, rubber, plastics, glass, ceramics and machinery.

In the course of its investigations on the properties of coal and in rendering fuel-inspection service to other agencies of the Government, the Bureau of Mines has accumulated a comprehensive file of coal analyses that includes data on virtually every coal field of commercial importance in the United States. As knowledge of the composition of coal is potentially valuable to every user of coal, the Bureau publishes its analytical records. Before 1921 such publications contained analyses of coal from all parts of the United States; individual analyses or average analyses of a series of shipments of coal were given with the name and location of the mine producing the coal. Beginning in 1921 the analyses were published by separate States because the quantity of data had become so great. The separate papers published to date, with Bureau of Mines Technical Paper numbers, are as follows: Alabama, 347; Arkansas, 416; Colorado, 574; Illinois, 634 and 641; Indiana, 417; Iowa, 269; Kansas, 455; Kentucky, 30S; Maryland, 465; Missouri, 366; Montana, 529; New Mexico, 569; Ohio, 344; Oklahoma, 411 ; Pennsylvania (bituminous), 590; Tennessee, 356; Utah, 345; Virginia, 365; Washington, 491 and 618 (618, published in 1941, supplements 491); West Virginia, 405 and 626; and Wyoming, 484. From time to time the various papers will be revised to include later analyses and other data. The Bureau of Mines annually receives many inquiries as to the composition of coals obtained from specific localities or, conversely, as to the localities from which a given kind of coal may be obtained. This paper presents a summary, in tabular form, of the composition of commercial coal resources of the country. Specimen analyses are given exemplifying the analysis of coal mined in each coal-producing county, or, where it was feasible, coal from each bed in each county; also, ranges of analyses, within which the composition of most of the coal represented will fall, are given where there were enough analyses to permit satisfactory determination of the ranges. In addition, the degree of metamorphism from lignite toward anthracite of much of the coal is indicated by the classification by rank. This classification reveals to more experienced users of coal some of the general properties of coal, that is, whether the flame will be long or short, whether the coal will cake in the fire, and how it is likely to behave on exposure and in storage.

The scheduled power cuts of early 2008 were a disturbing reminder that South Africa needs to expand its power-generating capacity. Low-grade and discard coals, of which South Africa has much, are a source of energy and amenable to combustion in circulating fluidized beds (CFBs). Foster Wheeler (FW) has a long record in developing this technology in boilers. The technology is flexible in burning a variety of fuels; low-grade, high-ash coals, good quality bituminous and anthracite coals, and biomass and waste fuels have all been used. CFB boilers are efficient, reliable and can be designed to meet tight emission standards. In recent years once-through supercritical (OTSC) CFB technology has been developed. It enables the next stage in CFB development to proceed to a medium-scale (500 MWe) utility in such projects as Lagisza, which runs at a net efficiency of nearly 44%. Scaling the technology up to 800 MWe with a net efficiency of>45% is planned to be commercial during 2009. CFB technology can reduce CO2 emissions in the repowering of coal-fired and greenfield power plants. It does so through greater efficiencies and by co-combusting coal with biomass. FW has also developed CFB technology for the gasification of biomass, as, for example, in a pressurized gasifier to produce syngas, which can be used for the production of biodiesel, thereby reducing CO2 emissions from vehicles. Carbon capture and storage (CCS) can potentially cut CO2 emissions in the generation of power from fossil fuels in the short term, provided that it gains public acceptance, that the required regulatory framework is created, and that emission-trading mechanisms or other incentives provide a solid return on the major investments required. Oxyfuel combustion is an option in CCS; Foster Wheeler is adapting its CFB combustion technology for oxy-fuel combustion to meet this challenge. It is developing Flexi-burn?, which enables a plant to be operated either with or without carbon capture. This paper describes the status of CFB technology in terms of boiler efficiency and fuel flexibility. It highlights the advantages of CFB technology for oxyfuel combustion, presents a development plan for Flexi-burn?, and discusses a pressurized gasifier for biodiesel applications.
