"A multi-seam underground mining operation employing mechanized room-and-pillar methods provides 35 per cent of Smoky River's annual ROM coal production (2 million tonnes) from the Smoky River coal field. Surface mines provide the balance. Tectonic activity, which has resulted in deformed coal seams and a rugged relief to the area, has provided natural boundaries to discrete mining areas. Coal transportation to the central preparation plant incorporates a 3 km long underground conveying system. The company is committed to efficient resource recovery and a safe and healthy working environment. Introduction The Smoky River Coal operations (SRC) are centered in the Smoky River coal field located in west central Alberta, some 360 km west of Edmonton and 20 km from the Town of Grande Cache (Fig. 1). Combined mining operations produce 2 million tonnes per year run-of-mine coal from which 1.65 million tonnes of high quality, low volatile, coking coal are obtained. The underground mining operation, employing mechanized room-and-pillar methods, provides 35 per cent of SRC's annual ROM coal production (2 million tonnes). Surface mines provide the balance. Tectonic activity has resulted in deformed coal seams and a rugged relief in the area. This has provided natural boundaries to discrete mining areas. Background Exploration of the Smoky River coal field took place over four decades commencing in 1926. McIntyre Mines Limited (parent to Smoky River Coal Ltd.}, commenced development of the property in 1968 having secured a long-term contract for the delivery of coal to Japan. Production of underground coal at Smoky River commenced toward the end of 1969 and has been continuous on the property since that time. Originally, two underground mines were opened. Original planning envisaged the use of room-and-pillar techniques to develop blocks of coal for subsequent extraction by longwall retreat mining. Following initial development, two longwall units were established, the first in November 1970 in No. 5 Mine and the second in February 1971 in No. 2 Mine. Difficulties were experienced on both units, and production commitments could not be achieved. The longwalls were discontinued, and mechanized room-and-pillar was subsequently used for all underground mining."

"We have tried a new method to fabricate cobalt oxide films onto porous films directly by an electrodeposition method at low temperature. The porous substrate films (membrane-filters and paper) were placed between a LiOH solution and a CoSO4 solution and treated under electricalcurrents of ~1 mA/cm2 using carbon cathode and anode. Effects of temperatures, flow rates and electrical currents have been investigated. As a result, we found that the LiCoO2 films and Co3O4 films were successfully fabricated on paper and/or porous PTFE filters at 120 °C, while CoOOH films were deposited at 80 °C. Furthermore, LiCoO2 films did not cover whole the substrates, but was fabricated just over the anode. The chemical reactions of electrodeposition were also considered from these results.IntroductionRecent agreements on global environment require rapid progress of low energy and low waste processings for the fabrication of thin films that succeed to the mass production with the high consumption of the fossil fuels (such as physical vapor deposition°, chemical vapor deposition2), dip coating with firing3) etc.). The total energy consumption in aqueous systems should be the lowest among all these processing routes, because a much lager excess of energy is necessary to create melts, vapor, gas, or plasma than to form an aqueous solution at the same temperature4)The ""Soft Solution-Process"" (SSP) was one of the best concepts to realize the low energy and low waste fabrication of inorganic materials. 5) Generally speaking, SSP gives similar results to any other processing using fluids (such as vapor, gas plasma) and/or beam/vacuum processing. However, the total energy consumption of all these possessing routes should be the lowest in aqueous systems, because a much larger excess of energy is necessary to create melts, vapor, gas or plasma than to form an aqueous solution at the same temperature (Fig. 1). This idea can be easily demonstrated, using the simple example of BaTiO3. The energy diagram for the formation of BaTiO3 from various precursors is shown in reference 4. The driving forces (AG) for representative synthesis reaction of (1), (2), (3), (4) and(5) are 38, 727, 3685, 17 and —14kcal/mol, respectively at room temperature. 6' 7"

Hydrogen (H2 ) gas released during battery charging can result in cross-interference for carbon monoxide (CO) sensors used for early fire detection and compromise the integrity of the mine atmospheric monitoring system. In this study, a series of laboratory-scale and full-scale experiments were conducted to evaluate the responses of different CO sensors to H2 gas. In the laboratory-scale experiments, H2 concentrations in the airflow are constant, while in the full-scale experiments, increasing H2 concentrations generated as a byproduct of charging the batteries at the battery charging station rise to the sensors under different ventilation scenarios. The H2 concentrations at the CO sensor location were measured using H2 sensors and were correlated with the CO sensor response. The effects of ventilation and sensor location on the CO sensors responses were also analyzed. The results of this study can help mining companies to select appropriate CO sensors and improve the deployment of these sensors to safeguard underground miners.

The change from a seasonal to a continuous mining operation at Cassiar has been accompanied by increased emphasis on the preventive maintenance of mining equipment. This paper describes how equipment maintenance is organized, and details some maintenance practices that have proved advantageous to the Cassier operation. Introduction Cassiar Asbestos Corporation Limited is currenly carrying out an open-pit mining operation at the 6,300-foot elevation on McDame mountain in northern B. C. A 6-mile road connects the mine to the mill and plantsite at the 3,500-foot elevation. Ore concentrate is delivered to the mill via a 3llz-mile tramline. Naturally level ground does not exist in the mine area. The weather is typical of mountainous regions, exhibiting wide and rapid variations in temperature. It is generally wet and windy at the mine elevation, and a heavy snowfall is common. The rock types vary from a soft, sheared serpentine to massive serpentine, to medium-hard, friable sediments to hard, blocky volcanic flows.

"This work has as its objective to evaluate the effect of incorporation of the powder waste retained in the eletrostatic precipitator of the sintering stage from an integrated steel making plant on the physical and mechanical properties of a red ceramic. Formulations were prepared with incorporation of the waste in amounts up to 20 wt.% into a kaolinitic clay. Rectangular specimens were prepared by uniaxial mold-press at 20 MPa and then fired at 750, 900 and 1050°C. The evaluated physical and mechanical properties were: linear shrinkage, water absorption and flexural rupture strength. The results showed that the waste has a potential to be used into red ceramics. The incorporation of the waste enhanced the properties of the ceramic, decreasing the water absorption and increasing the mechanical strength at all investigated temperatures.IntroductionThe sintering stage of an integrated steel-making plant is dedicated to the agglomeration of a mixture of iron ore, coke or coal, fluxes and water [1]. It is a common practice in this stage to use of solid wastes with great amounts of iron in the form of sludge and powder. One of the atmospheric pollutants generated during the sintering process is the particulate material, which is normally retained in an equipment denote as electrostatic precipitator. This equipment retains very small particulates, present in the gaseous emissions by application of an electrical potential difference in between the plates that the fluid is forced to go through. "In order to study the influence of MgO-C refractory on steel cleanliness and inclusions during steelmaking process, and to understand the reaction mechanism deeply, laboratory deoxidation and equilibrium experiments were respectively performed in MgO crucibles at 1873K. In the former experiment, after Al addition, steel samples were taken at different holding time. In the latter experiment, different slag components and different contents of carbon and aluminum in steel were considered respectively. The inclusion characteristics of each experiment were analyzed. The results showed that with the increasing of holding time after deoxidation by Al, MgO existed in the small inclusions firstly, and then in the large ones such as the clusters. The MgO content in the inclusions increased with the increasing of holding time, indicating that the MgO in crucible could be individually reduced by the aluminum in the molten steel. The reaction could occur within nine minutes.IntroductionNon-metallic inclusions would have positive or negative effect on steel quality depend on the quantity, size and composition of inclusions. Large inclusions are always detrimental. From the point of view of inclusion property, plastic inclusions are required by steel cord, while hard inclusions are preferred by pipeline steel. One of the most important ways to increase the steel quality is reducing the inclusion size and controlling the inclusion composition in steel. Nowadays, MgO based refractory is used as ladle glaze material with more and more frequency, which results in different inclusion characteristics in molten steel, for example, the inevitable generation of MgO contained inclusions during ladle treatment of steel. In other words, the inclusions in this type ladle will influence on the steel cleanliness and the product property. Thus, keeping an eye on the inclusion formation behavior in the steel with MgO-C ladle glaze is important for the steel industry. There have been a few studies in this regard. Li et al[l] studied the reactions between MgO-C refractory, molten slag and metal using a high temperature X-ray radiographic apparatus. They found that the local corrosion was regarded as due to the cyclic dissolution of MgO and graphite in the refractory into slag and metal phase. The gas bubbles formed according to the reaction of (FeO)+C(s)=Fe(l)+CO(g) greatly influenced the corrosion. On an industrial scale, Du[2] found that ladle glaze is a major source of inclusions in the ladle. An experimental study has been performed by Lehmann in order to estimate the importance of the reaction between a MgO-based tundish refractory and an Al-killed steel[3]."

Turkey is the main boron minerals producing country in the world. The most important boron minerals are tincal, colemanite and ulexite. All mining, beneficiation and handling operations generate fines which cause ecological and economical problems. Utilization of this accumulated material requires both upgrading and agglomeration. The aim of this research was to exploit the ulexite fines by improving their grade and size. Attrition-scrubbing followed by washing and screening was employed for upgrading the fines. It was found that the grade can be increased from 23-25% B2O3 to 29% B2O3 with 73% recovery. Briquetting was applied as the size enlargement process. During the briquetting, the effect of moisture content, pressure, amount and type of binder, and drying on the quality of briquettes were investigated. The tests showed the possibility of production of strong briquettes by adding water alone, but the briquettes had no resistance to abrasion and water. Binders, namely boric acid and borax have been added to improve the properties of briquettes. The results showed that the compressive strengths and abrasive resistances of briquettes obtained with both binders were acceptable. However, the briquettes have no water resistance properties.

Reaction kinetics of serpentine and hydrochloric acid is theoretical basis for optimizing reaction process conditions of serpentine and hydrochloric acid. Kinetics of serpentine and hydrochloric acid was studied in this paper. The results indicated that apparent reaction order to hydrochloric acid was two and reaction kinetic equation could be expressed as: 2HClHCl,ddtckct-=·. The diffusion rates of hydrogen ions in liquid film on surface of serpentine particle and in amorphous silica layer generated in the reaction and chemical reaction velocity during the reaction had important effects on to-tal reaction velocity. And chemical reaction velocity had the most significant influence. The relation of conversion rate of magnesia xMgO with reaction time could be expressed as: 1(1)xkt--=·.

A new technology for the treatment of copper nickel-containing concentrate after high-grade matte flotation to blister copper with the production of liquid silicate slags in a vertical autogenous unit with upper oxygen blow has been considered. The copper and nickel behavior in the process of sulphide copper concentrate interaction with silicate melt containing oxide copper has been studied. The general mechanisms of such interaction are found.

The control of coal dust on coal tipples and cleaning plants has not been given the consideration that is afforded underground dust hazards. This apparent oversight is undoubtedly due to the general opinion that coal-dust accumulation in tipples or cleaning plants does not present the same type of hazard that it does underground. That this opinion is at least in part a fallacy has been proved many times, and the Bureau of Mines has on record many examples of explosions in tipples and cleaning plants.3/ In addition to this explosion hazard, coal dust is considered by sonic authorities to be injurious to the health of individuals exposed to it.4/ Obviously, it reduces visibility and contributes materially to accident hazards and the discomfort of the employees. Several companies have recognized this dust hazard and the advantages derived from controlling it; consequently, they have installed equipment to allay and control the dust on, their cleaning plants and tipples. The object of this paper is to. Summarize briefly some of the methods new in effect.

"For steel continuous castings, it is essential to control molten steel velocity at the meniscus, since the velocity is closely related to surface defects on the resultant products. Argon gas is supplied with molten steel into the mold through the submerged entry nozzle to prevent nozzle clogging. In this study, to investigate the influence of argon gas on molten steel flow, a numerical simulation was carried out by a two-phase model. Simulation results indicate that as argon gas bubbles ascend near the nozzle by their buoyancy, they induce the molten steel flow with them and resulted a meniscus molten steel flow from the nozzle to the narrow face of the mold. This flow direction is opposite to the case without argon gas. The calculated data are compared with the experimental data. The comparison shows generally good agreement between the measured and the calculated data. IntroductionIn a steelmaking process, molten steel carried by a ladle is first fed into a buffer vessel called tundish. From the tundish, it is then fed into a continuous casting mold. Molten steel solidifies gradually in the mold (the primary cooling zone) forming a solidified shell. As the solidified shell is just thick enough to support the molten steel at the mold exit, it is withdrawn through the mold by pinch rolls. It is progressively thicken as it is further cooled with water sprays in the secondary cooling zone. At the end of guide roll zone, completely solidified steel is cut into desirable lengths. Our planes have ranged from the Alaskan boundary on the west to the Labrador coast on the east, and from the Transcontinental railway north to the Arctic circle. Our prospectors, carried on trips of hundreds, and occasionally thousands, of miles, have gone over large sections of country which were never before explored, and at the end of the prospecting season the Company finds itself in possession of several groups of important gold claims, which look most promising. In addition to this, we have been in contact with deposits of almost every known mineral.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines, through an Interagency Agreement with the U.S. Army Tank-Automotive Command (TACOM), has successfully developed a steel expendable pattern casting process (EPC) for the manufacture of armorplate. The new armor is lighter and more ballistically effective than conventional rolled homogeneous armor (RHA), and costs less. An applique armor spinoff from the program was field-tested during the Gulf War. The applique armor withstood direct impacts from enemy munitions without failure.

Sand casting of steel is a process that offers the greatest design flexibility and highest metallurgical versatility. However, competition from other methods of fabrication is quite keen, constantly forcing the steel casting industry to the production of better quality castings at lower costs. New methods and materials have been put to use in the last ten years by foundries everywhere. This paper, in the form of a progress report, deals with new methods, processes and materials used by Canadian steel foundries for regular production, as well as with developments still in the initial but promising stages. T HE casting of steel to shape is the most direct method of producing steel parts in their final form. It is a basically economical process both as to cost and production time; it is also a process that offers design engineers the greatest flexibility and highest metallurgical versatility. Activity coefficient of oxygen in sulfide-rich and metal-rich melts in copper-sulfur binary were determined at 1423 and 1523 K by means of a modified coulometric titration technique using the following cell: 0 ( is Cu-S melts) I Zr02 (+Ca0) I air, Pt The activity coefficient values obtained in the present study increase rapidly with sulfur composition in the vicinity of xs = 0.3333. The data obtained for the matte saturated with the metal-rich melts are in good agreement with those obtained by Kuxmann and Benecke, Schmied 1, and Eguchi and Yazawa. Those obtained for the metal-rich melts are in good agreement with the results of Sano and Sakao.

According to a 2000 NIOSH report, about 100 million rock anchors are installed annually in coal mines in the USA. Most coal mines have conditions that are conducive to corrosion of the rock anchor and ancillaries (such as plates), yet the effect of this on the performance of the anchors has not been adequately researched and its effects are not understood or quantified in the USA. There is considerable research into corrosion in civil engineering applications on surface and underground but the corrosion of coal mine rock anchors is not necessarily the same because: ? In underground civil structures, water ingress is usually stopped as part of the construction process. ? Many rock bolts in mines are only partially resin grouted leaving part of the reinforcing member exposed to corrosive conditions. All cable bolts in coal mines are only partially resin grouted. ? Even when mine bolts are fully grouted, shrinkage cracks occur and the rock stresses can change due to adjacent mining that can cause the resin column around the bolt to fracture further under external shear or tensile stresses. Most coal mines therefore have ideal conditions for bolt corrosion.

UNFORTUNATE evasions of metals specifications recently brought to public attention through news items and editorials have caused executives of at least two great corporations to set up defensive procedures and to re¬affirm the patriotic purpose and conscientious effort of their plants in this battle of production. Whatever the exact conditions affecting these cases, in which the public interest has been safe-guarded by vigorous action, my reaction to such offenses in general is a feeling that they arise from the pressure and limitations that afflict our overextended war effort and that inevitably there will be more of them, doubtless more and more expertly conceived and less and less subject to detection as simple faked, or substituted analyses or tests. To the ladies, who doubtless are already beginning to ac¬quire a sense of painful resignation to a dry technical talk, may I say that the cookbook is full of specifications which customarily are varied within rather wide limits but it is generally recognized that the proof of the pudding is in the eating without regard to its exact composition or some scientific evaluation of its texture.
